27 Apr 2022108 | Did you ask for help today? If no, why not?00:22:05

As moms, it's as if there is this unwritten rule that we have to do it all (for everyone).   The more you do the better you feel, or at least think you will feel and others will know you are a good mom.   Right?  No.  Letting others influence your days is a recipe for disaster and overwhelm.   Spoiler alert:  I already know you are a fantastic mom!

But, in reality, we decide how to spend our days, what makes us happy, and who/what we let into our day-to-day lives.   When you don't choose how to spend your time, the result is feeling stressed, tired, and left feeling unproductive at the end of the day.  What if there was another way? A way to get it done (or not) and feel happy and accomplished at the end of your day.

In this episode, you will learn the 3 ways to conquer your overwhelm and become calmer to enjoy your life to its fullest.  Doesn't that sound great?

18 Jul 2022114 | Write Down Your Hangcliffers00:12:11

One of the many things I love about raising a daughter with dyslexia is that I learn from her every single day.  I love the way she sees the world and I love even more how she shares the things she sees and thinks about.

That's where hangcliffers was born!

It started out as a typical night where we were watching a tv series with our daughter and this episode was the last one for the season. It ended without really ending.  You know, the ones where you are left not knowing what happened next. My daughter stood up and said with a very serious face and tone she said to us “that was a real hangcliffer.”

I've had many moms raising dyslexic kiddos share similar stories.  So, how are we going to remember all of these amazing words, expressions, and ideas of our kids growing up?  Write them down.

Listen to learn the benefits of writing it down in letters to your kiddo and how to get started today.

When traveling,  your kids ask "are we there yet" every 5 minutes, or at least it feels that way. You may not even be out of the subdivision when the kids start asking how much longer until we get there.

You may feel the same way when you are remediating your child's dyslexia.  Are we done yet? How much longer?

Dyslexia parenting is a journey.  Your child will not learn to decode overnight.  It will take time.  Take remediation one day at a time and celebrate the wins along the way.

When your child is making progress, it's time to lean in.

When Christin and Abby were college roommates they never dreamed that they would later be sharing their dyslexia parenting journey together.   Like most moms raising children with dyslexia, their dyslexia journey has similarities and differences.   Along their dyslexia parenting journey, they realized their own strengths and gifts for building bridges of understanding and hope while learning to confront shame.

On today's podcast episode, Christin and Abby share their personal dyslexia journey. They also share the inspiration for @dyslexiatogetherbox, you may be surprised how they came up with this great subscription box idea.  We had such a great conversation.  I know you are going to love getting to know a few moms raising dyslexics.

23 Sep 2024134 | How to Find Harmony and Live Intentionally00:12:21

Harmony is about creating a balanced and integrated life where different aspects of your life—personal, professional, and relational—are aligned and working together.  I hear a lot of people talk about work-life balance, and work-life integration, many buzz phrases leave us feeling pulled in too many directions and never 100% present where we are . . . at home, work, with friends, etc.

Living intentionally means making deliberate choices that reflect your values and long-term goals. It’s about being proactive rather than reactive in your life. When you live intentionally, you’re shaping your life rather than letting circumstances dictate it.

Mel Abraham's book, Building Your Money Machine, inspired this episode.  The book is about financial freedom, but he also shares about living intentionally with harmony which I thought you might also appreciate.

Let’s talk about what it means to feel lost. Feeling lost can manifest in many ways—whether it’s a sense of confusion, lack of direction, or just feeling disconnected from your own identity.  As moms, it’s easy to get wrapped up in the responsibilities and demands of daily life, leaving little room for self-reflection or self-care.

It’s important to acknowledge that these feelings are valid and not uncommon. Many moms experience this at some point in their dyslexia parenting journey, and it’s okay to seek support and work through it. Understanding that you’re not alone is the first step towards finding your way back to you!

Most people think of dyslexia as a noticeable difficulty with reading and writing. But for some students, their intelligence and coping strategies allow them to hide their struggles—sometimes even from themselves. This is what we call stealth dyslexia. Often times for educators and parents struggle to make sense of the fact their very bright student is struggling to read. Stealth students can mask or compensate for their dyslexia.

How does it go unnoticed? What are the signs? And how can we support these students before they burn out?

19 Feb 2025140 | Deep Dive into Dyslexia: What Lies Below the Surface00:19:10

The iceberg is a great way to visualize dyslexia. Above the water, you see the small visible part. Things like difficulty with reading, spelling, and writing. That’s what most people recognize as dyslexia.

But what’s beneath the surface? A range of cognitive differences affect memory, processing speed, organization, and even self-esteem. These hidden struggles can impact a person’s entire life - not just in school but in work, relationships, and everyday tasks.

As a parent raising a child with dyslexia, it is important to realize that the areas you do not see can impact your child and family daily. If you don't recognize the areas under the iceberg, you may look up one day and see you have hit the iceberg and not have a boat (or plan) to get out without a Titanic moment.

12 Oct 2020DML 21: Dyslexic Voices - Mike Jones00:45:55

Mike Jones is sharing his dyslexia journey on the show.  It's not an easy story to tell, since growing up with dyslexia can be painful and challenging for so many children.  By sharing his story, Mike hopes to bring more awareness of dyslexia to all schools and educators.

Did you know that the short film, MICAL, was based on Mike's story when he was seven years old and struggling to learn to read?  When Mike was identified with dyslexia, his teachers were still unable and unwilling to help him.  He couldn't even spell his own name.  Mike's mother, Pat Jones, made the decision to learn everything she could about dyslexia, including the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach to teaching reading.  She homeschooled Mike using what she learned about OG and developed games to help him learn.  Pat changed Mike's future.  Mike learned to not give up on himself.  Now, Mike and his wife, Tiffany James, support families through their company, Nessy Learning.  Mike has adapted his mother's games into digital games (apps) for children to learn to read.
