10 Mar 2023 | Love to Hate You: A Friendly Battle of the Sexes With Shaky Gender Politics | 00:33:19
Understanding deeply that nobody wants a brutal analysis of this candyfloss, I have stuck to talking about two things that I found really interesting: (ONE) how the drama tries to equate the female lead's wariness of men to the male lead's shallow beliefs and hostile reactions to women... and then undermines its own thesis (TWO) how the male leads in romantic k-dramas go through an emotional journey, whereas the female leads go through social ones Leave me your thoughts in a voice note here: <Recording Page> MORE EPISODES YOU'LL LIKE: Episode 144: Year-end Yak (Part 1) Episode 145: The Interest of Love NEWSLETTER: Join our email list for the monthly newsletter with podcast announcements and special episodes! 28 Dec 2021 | Run On | The Spoiled Yak | 01:27:43
It’s the end of the year and as we all reflect on the dramas we loved in 2021, we thought it would be a good time to release this Spoiled Yak on one of our favorites—Run On. Our friend, Seoulbeats editor Rimi, joins Anisa Paroma for a long and detailed squee session about the show. If it sounds familiar, that’s because we actually recorded this in a livestream on Valentines day. In the spirit of Mi-joo’s movie madness, our topic headings for this Spoled Yak are all film references. Listen and relive the feels for this incredibly well-written, moving, hilarious show. Saya and Paroma sit down for a good gab about jTBC's 10-year anniversary drama, Sisyphus: The Myth, that aired earlier in the year, starring Park Shin-hye and Jo Seung-woo. We're optimistic about the future of sci-fi in the K-drama realm, though, and the lush scope of Sisyphus gets us really excited! Come and listen! 09 Oct 2022 | The Red Sleeve: A King's Favourite Concubine Who Belonged to Herself | 01:08:06
The Red Sleeve is a story of a woman's wish to belong to herself and the man who couldn't let her go. It's also about a king who couldn't trust his grandson and a crown prince who survived against all odds so he could some day be a good ruler to his people. Mimi from The Talking Cupboard joins Paroma in a very spoilery episode where they wonder at the superior storytelling, the strength of conviction of the creators, and the exceptional performance by the entire cast, but most especially by Lee Jun-ho and Lee Se-young. LINKS MENTIONED: Book Link: A Ghost in Shining Armour by Therese Beharrie. This Long Yak is the second we recorded in February, and we discuss The Uncanny Counter, Run On, and Live On. Just a note: this was recorded before the series of bullying scandals that have rocked the Korean entertainment industry in recent weeks, and our discussion of bullying in this episode is less serious than it would have been with that context in front of us. We talked about this in Episode 87, but also, stay tuned for a special What's Up in Dramaland episode soon. We'll be joined by an expert guest to take a more in-depth look at the issue and the surrounding cultural context.

Anisa and friends of the podcast refresh and Yunah talk about writer-director Lee Isaac Chung’s film Minari, starring Steven Yeun, Yoon Yeo-jung, and Han Yeri, as well as the precocious, adorable Alan S. Kim. We all loved the movie, and had a great discussion about the universality of its embodiment of the Korean American experience in the United States, how it captures vivid moments and emotions, and whether we have awards hopes for this film, even though awards don’t matter. But let’s be real, there’s no way we aren’t celebrating Minari’s 6 Oscar nominations!

20 Mar 2021 | 90. School Bullying in Dramas vs. Real Life | When Our Faves Fail Us | Feat. Prof. CedarBough Saeji | 01:10:15
Welcome to our special edition of What's Up in Dramaland, with Professor CedarBough Saeji. We ask CedarBough to share her thoughts on the bullying scandals, how dramas compare with real life, and what the role of fandom is during times of moral crisis.

00:02:17 Introducing Professor CedarBough Saeji
00:04:33 Perceptions and prevalence of bullying in Korean schools
00:06:03 Overview of actors accused of school violence
00:13:27 The difficulties presented by S. Korean defamation laws
00:15:44 The celebrity-corporate ecosystem, and the socioeconomic value of a clean reputation

00:25:23 Why now, and why is bullying such a hot button issue with the general public? What does society and "the discourse" owe to victims?
00:30:44 Hierarchy as a societal problem, and school life as the learning ground for negotiating pecking order
00:36:04 Competition and academic success: who becomes a bully in Korean schools, and what has celebrity got to do with it?
00:45:13 As a fan, what is an appropriate response to have when you learn about the wrongdoings of an actor you like?
00:51:26 International fandom, and doubling down on expectations of celebrity perfection
00:53:21 Is there a path to redemption after celebrity wrongdoing? How to make a comeback, and gender differences.
00:58:05 How jealousy moves mountains: the Tablo scandal, and struggling to survive "Hell Joseon"

We're back for a long Long Yak! It's been a while, but we hope you enjoy our drama catch-up as much as we did, though as you can see, we are still working our way back up to current shows. Nevertheless, we bring you all our customary digressions (including once again, a discussion on the necessity of angst), little love-squees about our underrated favourites, and of course, lots of giggling. (Listen out for the canine cameo!)

19 Apr 2018 | 1. The Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo and Falling For Flawed Heroines | 01:01:02
