20 Jan 2020Study Finds Acid-Suppressing Medication Increases Risk of Death00:12:44

A large and very compelling study with over 200,000 participants suggests caution about taking acid-suppressing medication (proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers). The study found an increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and upper gastrointestinal cancer. PPIs have been shown to heal gastric and duodenal ulcers when in short-term applications of 4-8 weeks. So, it’s important to keep an open mind about the potential benefits of these drugs. But I discourage you from taking acid-suppressing medications over the long term for reflux. There are several excellent alternatives for treating the root cause of reflux. These include dietary interventions and probiotics. In the long run, addressing the root cause of your reflux symptoms improves your overall health and reduces your risk of serious side effects from medication. https://drruscio.com/?p=49002

24 Mar 2025959 - How to Tell When ‘SIBO’ Is Actually Candida00:51:06

In today’s episode, we are happy to hear from our clinic’s Dr. Scott and one of his patients, Keith about his successful experience tackling gut health issues. Keith’s case posed a very common conundrum that we’ve seen in many with gut health issues - are we dealing with bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), fungal overgrowth (candida) or potentially both? We’ll walk through some of the key indications that Keith’s initial SIBO diagnosis was actually a candida case, and we’ll cover the best testing and treatments that led to Keith’s recovery.

12 Jan 2022The Impact of Lifestyle Factors on Glucose Levels01:02:42

Health technology tools such as the Continuous Glucose Monitoring Device can help you improve your metabolic health by providing a picture of how your lifestyle factors – including diet, exercise, alcohol consumption, and sleep – affect your blood glucose levels.

However, these tools are only as good as the user’s mindset and basic understanding of the science behind the numbers.

Dr. Ronesh Sinha explains how to regard the CGM as an opportunity to learn about your body rather than getting stressed about single data points, and how to cultivate healthy glucose levels through a balanced lifestyle.

04 Mar 2019Light and EMFs: Invisible Effects, and Fixes for Your Home00:46:01

Artificial light and electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are an inescapable reality of city environments. Rather than sleeping when the sunlight tells us to, we alter our circadian rhythms with electric light, sometimes at the expense of our immune system and sleep quality. Artificial lights that mimic the sun may provide a more natural environment for our bodies. EMFs emanating from our devices may generate heat, disrupt melatonin and even cause mechanical vibration of cell membranes. Ways to lessen EMF exposure include putting your phone into airplane mode while sleeping, keeping it away from your body, and avoiding the use of your laptop on your lap. Checking your home with an EMF detector may also reveal external sources, which you can block while you sleep using some forms of shielding. https://drruscio.com/?p=28620

31 Aug 2022How to Diagnose Hypothyroid & Hashimoto’s and Reliable Symptoms00:28:13

I’m so excited to announce that I have finally put together a course on thyroid health. I developed this course because of what I see in my clinical practice every single week: patients who have seen conventional doctors and alternative or functional medicine doctors, who have done their own research, and who still have symptoms. My clinical team and I have learned so much by obsessing over all of the latest thyroid, gut, and autoimmunity research, and by working with patients every day. I’m proud to say that we have developed a practical, evidence-based model for treating patients with persistent thyroid problems, and it works. Now, I’m sharing everything we’ve learned with you, to empower you to take back control of your thyroid, your gut, your overall health, and your life.

https://drruscio.com/thyroid-course/

In today’s episode, I’ll walk you through the first four modules of my new thyroid course, which focus on the current state of thyroid care, some of the most pervasive myths in the thyroid community, real cases studies from our clinic, how to really define your thyroid condition and interpret your labs, where the gaps are in both conventional and alternative medicine, and more.

Later, we’ll cover the treatments and diets that do and don’t work, and how to properly sequence them and put them into action so that you can feel better.

09 Feb 2022A Scientifically Validated Lab Test for Gut Dysbiosis00:54:35
A scientifically validated tool for diagnosing gut dysbiosis has recently appeared on the market.

Developed by a pair of researchers in Norway, the GA-map® test enables clinicians to quantify a diagnosis of IBS or IBD based on lab markers rather than relying on symptom reporting. This makes it possible to determine appropriate treatment for gut issues with a greater degree of specificity and accuracy than ever before.

01 Apr 2019Which Is Better, Low Fat or Low Carb? 00:52:08

The recent DIETFITS study explored how well people would do on a low-carb vs. a low-fat diet, based on genotype or the way they secrete insulin. The results of the study didn’t reveal a link with genotype pattern or insulin. But they showed roughly equal weight-loss success for participants on both diets. Notably, the study forbid participants in both diets to eat added sugar or refined grain, and encouraged both groups to eat copious vegetables. More than whether your diet is high-fat or low-fat, it seems that high-quality whole foods are a critical factor in healthy weight loss. https://drruscio.com/?p=29414

12 Mar 2018Probiotics for Weight Loss00:08:26

Gut microbiota is the newest health craze. Problems with the good bacteria in the intestines have been correlated with everything from obesity to cardiovascular disease. However, correlation does not mean causation, and certainly does not mean we have successful treatments. So what about microbiota and weight gain? Can we manipulate the microbiota with probiotics or prebiotics to achieve weight loss? The answers might surprise you.

15 May 2023810 - Healing Leaky Gut & Inflammation with Dr. Jockers01:01:38

In this episode, I talk with Dr. David Jockers about what really works for healing leaky gut syndrome. When your gut is “leaky,” symptoms from diarrhea to joint pain to brain fog can occur.

These symptoms point to a larger issue of an overreactive immune response, which can be calmed down with the right tools in place.

At the clinic, we follow the scientific evidence and listen to how our patients respond to various treatments. With healing leaky gut, we’ve found one supplement that works across the board for patients. We’ve also found what doesn’t work, despite the hype around these modalities.

Listen to the episode to hear the best ways to get a healthier gut and you.

17 Jan 2022Updates On Leaky Gut, Low FODMAP Diets, and IBS00:36:18

Today’s podcast episode features the latest gut health research, my thoughts on how these studies fit into what we’re doing at the clinic, and how I use the information in the studies to consider whether we’re practicing in accordance with current science or if we need to consider modifying our approach.

This latest batch of studies examines:

  • The impact of low FODMAP diets on IBS
  • A meta-analysis of the efficacy of rifaximin in treating SIBO
  • A prospective study of IBS patients who derived benefits from a gluten-free diet even though they were not strictly compliant with the diet
  • The relationship between the oral microbiota and SIBO
  • A study of patients with leaky gut whose symptoms improved 3,000% with a low FODMAP diet as compared to a gluten-free diet

…and more. Listen and learn.

11 Feb 2019Fatty Liver Improves with Probiotics – High-Level Scientific Evidence00:06:11

The gut and the liver may be more connected than you expect: probiotics can reduce liver enzymes from non-alcoholic fatty liver. A recent meta-analysis showed that two liver enzymes, ALT and AST, a byproduct of liver damage, were significantly reduced in test patients when taking lactobacillus-bifidobacterium blends of probiotics. Insulin resistance also improved. If you’re struggling with a liver condition, it’s important to consider the impact of your gut health. https://drruscio.com/?p=28102

25 Oct 2021The Controversy of IgG Food Sensitivity Testing00:30:34

Food sensitivity testing is one of the diagnostic tools most widely recommended by functional medicine practitioners to their patients, and it has blossomed into a lucrative industry that nets millions of dollars per year for companies that market these home testing kits to consumers.

But the science behind these tests is flawed. In this podcast, I discuss how getting to the root of food reactions relies on evidence-based trials that ultimately helps patients heal without asking them to spend thousands on faulty testing.

Other podcast highlights include a case study from an FFMR subscriber who helped a patient with known environmental exposure by applying the principles of the FFMR (and without testing).

Also featured are rapid research briefs from the FFMR plus with a look at why iron deficiency even without anemia can be a significant clinical issue requiring active treatment, and dietary interventions for treating eosinophilic esophagitis.

13 Mar 2019An Easy On-Ramp to the Keto Diet with Dr. Josh Axe00:42:11

The ketogenic (or keto) diet emphasizes high fat, low carbohydrates, and medium protein intake. In some studies, the keto diet has been shown to benefit sufferers of epilepsy, insulin regulation, polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, glioblastoma, and more. One common misconception is that you must be on the diet forever for it to be valuable. Beginners to the diet may want to start slow, replacing some of their carb intake with healthy fats. Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine have lessons to offer about the value of herbs, synergistic effects, and the overall body environment. On any diet, whether paleo, keto, Mediterranean, or another type, it’s important to emphasize high-quality whole foods. https://drruscio.com/?p=28843

05 Aug 2019Why Everything You Know About SIBO Could Be Wrong01:24:08

One theory of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is that it’s caused by bacteria in the colon moving up. A new study on one section of the small intestine, the jejunum, challenges that concept. The study—which used a new technique called polymerized chain reaction (PCR) to look at bacterial genomes—found that the jejunum has its own unique microbiota. Positive breath tests also did not correlate with bacterial overgrowth in the jejunum, but rather jejunal dysfunction. Dr. Richard McCallum, gastroenterologist and researcher on the study, explains more about these findings and what they might mean for SIBO treatment. We also discuss how proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), breath tests, diet, prokinetics, and hypochlorhydria fit into this picture. Join us for a very insightful conversation! https://drruscio.com/?p=32517

30 Dec 2019Hypothyroidism Increases Your SIBO Risk00:13:45

If you have hypothyroidism, your gut could play a role in your symptoms. Namely, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) may be present too. About 30% of people who have hypothyroidism have low stomach acid, according to high-quality research. Low stomach acid can increase your risk of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). The science also shows a direct link between SIBO and hypothyroidism. When trying to improve how you feel, consider healing your gut with probiotics and possibly supplemental hydrochloric acid. 08 Mar 2023791 - The Consequences of Overtesting and Overtreatment00:25:02

When overdone or done unnecessarily, functional health tests can impact patients financially and emotionally. Take Jane—a patient at our clinic who spent over $7,000 in total on treatment with a different doctor only to develop an eating disorder and experience worsening symptoms. In this episode, I break down evidence that explains why adrenal, glucose breath, micronutrient, gut dysbiosis, and food allergy tests didn’t help her case—and why they aren’t always necessary to do for treatment.

06 Feb 2019PRP Injections for Hair Loss, Does It Work? 00:39:50

In the last several years, medical specialists have started using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to address both skin rejuvenation and hair loss for men and women. Hair loss can often be associated with loss of blood flow to the scalp. PRP, which is “spun up” from your own blood, is a relatively safe and natural way to stimulate hair growth or collagen production in the skin. Results vary, but with minimal side effects and relatively low cost, PRP treatment is worth investigating. https://drruscio.com/?p=27839
