14 Jul 2019 | Ed Henry Donates His Liver | 00:40:17
What a story! Ed Henry from Fox News donated about 30% of his liver to his sister that was in need of a liver transplant as a result of end-stage liver disease. Through a series of amazing twists, I was was asked to appear on Fox and Friends last week to help explain live liver donation, organ transplant, and the overall liver transplant process to the Fox and Friends audience. During this broadcast, Ed Henry announced his decision to donate, in a very emotional segment. For most that saw this genuine outpouring of emotion from Ed, they were very much unfamiliar with organ donation and transplant, let alone a partial liver donation and transplant, and the eventual regeneration of both the donor's liver (i.e. Ed) and his sister who received the transplant (i.e. 30% to 100% in a matter of weeks after transplant). While we all enjoy these type of human interest stories on TV or the web, this story has struck a chord with America, seeing both the raw emotion displayed, but also the amazing good that organ donation and transplant achieves. Being a small part of this story has been an amazing experience for me, and one I can only hope continues to foster discussion, understanding, awareness, and hope for those thousands of people that are awaiting a transplant. Check out a video highlight of the story. For information on ORGAN DONATION, check out this link. Discuss with your family today your wish to be an organ and tissue donor. Thanks for listening. Anahad is one of the rising start at the NY Times, and has written some of the best medical and health related articles recently. Over the past several weeks, he has written an article titled: Supplements and Diets for Heart Health Show Limited Proof of Benefit- Some supplements may actually be harmful for cardiovascular health. The second article we discussed was: Cutting 300 Calories a Day Shows Health Benefits. Yes...cutting out 300 calories a day may save your life (we hope). 22 Aug 2019 | I Have a Problem with UnTuckit Shirts | 00:21:13
Obesity is the #1 public health concern we face in America. With 75% of adults overweight or obese, this is no small problem. This damaging obesity is the belly fat around the mid-section, which triggers inflammation and tissue damage throughout the body, including the heart and liver. The untucked shirt movement, which doesn't even look that good from a fashion standpoint, is a cover-up for the expanding girths we are facing. Instead of realizing your clothes are getting tight (due to obesity), and plan to cut down what you're eating and exercise more, the only change is to get clothes that are designed to cover the problem-your gut. We cannot simply hide the expanding waistline with a cleverly tailored shirt. Resist the untucked movement. Push away from the table, exercise more, and visit your healthcare team. It's that important. #untuckit #obesity #menshealth #beerbelly Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
30 Aug 2019 | Increasing #ColonCancer Rates: What Up with That? | 00:35:45
For the Labor Day episode of The Dr. Joe Galati Podcast, we are discussing some key health topics. Dr. Galati reviews 4 strategies for weight loss, including getting more sleep, high-intensity exercise, and more dietary fiber. These simple steps will lead to improved health. Unfortunately, colon cancer rates in young men is on the rise. It is felt to be partially related to the food we eat (or the foods we are NOT eating). As a result, screening for #coloncancer is not starting at age 45 (not 50 as it has been for decades). Lentils are a super food. Dr. Joe Galati discusses a new recipe he tried-and loved it (even his wife was raving about it!). Lastly, vaping is not good for you. 06 Sep 2019 | A Conversation with My #Dad | 00:37:07
This past week, I had the great opportunity to have by Dad, who will soon be 95 years old, on the program with me talking about food, cooking, and how the Great Depression impacted his views of food, cooking, and nutrition. Remembering that we lost Mom a few years ago, Dad has been able to remain active, and most importantly, still cook for himself. He is not eating "out of the box" junk food, but made from scratch meals, loaded with nutritious vegetables and protein. The wisdom he shares is invaluable to all of us, regardless of the stage of life we are all at. Take a listen, and share your feedback with me. 21 Sep 2019 | A Conversation with Ed Henry about Transplant | 00:49:20
This past week, I had the great honor to speak with Ed Henry, Chief National Correspondent for Fox News Channel, about his recent live liver donation for his sister, who was in need of a liver transplant. This past July, Ed announced on Fox and Friends that he would be donating a portion of his liver, to be implanted into his sister who was currently awaiting a liver transplant for complications of end-stage liver disease. Ed reported that his sister is doing well post operatively, and that he has recovered as well without any complications. When Ed announced his decision to help his sister, I was asked to appear with Ed to explain what he might experience with the surgery. That broadcast is posted here. Currently, about 30% of all those waiting for a liver transplant do not survive the wait due to organ shortages. More needs to be done with public education to increase donation of all organs including liver, heart, lung, kidney, and pancreas. Additionally, a single tissue donation can help up to 70 individuals. This story with Ed and his sister Colleen, has increased both the discussion about organ donation and transplant, hopefully starting a trend of greater awareness and understanding. On this podcast, Ed opens up about this transplant experience, and answers questions about transplant, that will encourage everyone to look at organ donation and transplant in a different, more positive light moving forward. Also on this episode is Kelly Perdue, President and CEO of The Living Bank, and organization based in Houston, dedicated to liver organ donation. Make sure you share your decision to be an organ donor with your family. For additional information about organ donation and transplant, check out these following links. Hosted on Acast. 26 Jan 2020 | Is V-8 Juice Health For You? | 00:35:50
This week, you'll get a detailed discussion of the pros and cons of drinking V-8 juice. We try to outline some of the advertising strategies they use to give you a false sense of security, in making you feel like this is a perfect substitute for eating FRESH fruits and veggies. It is NOT. The best I can say right now, and of course listen for more details, is that V-8 may serve as a good substitute for a sugary, low nutrition snack. A serving of V-8 is better than a bag of chips, double-stuffed cookie, or killer coffee drink. I do not feel that this, in any way, replaces the necessary servings of fruits and vegetables we so desperately need to maintain health each and every day. Where I do have a major issue is with the advertising, on the coattails of the original V-8 products, that all of their new "Fruit and Veggie Blends" are of the same make-up as the original formulation. They are not. It's a well marketed version of a sweetened fruit juice. Sugar, water, and no fiber. For information on V-8 products, check out this link. 26 Aug 2020 | #FattyLiver | 00:45:49
Fatty Liver Disease, also known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease or #NASH, is a leading cause of chronic liver disease, #cirrhosis, and liver cancer in the United States. Fatty liver develops in individuals who have a condition called "metabolic syndrome". Metabolic syndrome includes truncal obesity (belly fat), type-2 diabetes, hypertension, and elevated cholesterol or triglycerides. Fatty liver disease is a leading cause of liver failure that requires liver transplantation. The global obesity epidemic that we are facing is the single most important driving force behind the cases of fatty liver disease we see. An astounding 100 million people have fatty liver disease in the US. If left unaddressed, fatty liver disease has the potential to cause significant disability and mortality. It’s been shown that individuals with fatty liver disease have an increased "all cause mortality", which in simple terms meaning you’re going to die earlier. Another tragic part of the fatty liver disease story is that our children are being affected by this, and are developing chronic liver disease, diabetes, and heart disease decades earlier. In my opinion, this is our number one public health threat, and unfortunately many in the medical community and politics have simply ignored it. In this podcast, you’ll hear from Dr. Eric Lawitz, a liver expert and renowned researcher in the area fatty liver disease. Helen Yuan, RD will be joining us discussing the nutritional strategies to begin turning the tide on this devastating disease. 03 Sep 2020 | Why am I Constipated? | 00:40:11
This week I have two very special guests joining me. The first is Michael Garfield, who is a permanent fixture on the Houston radio landscape. Michael and his weekly program, the High-Tech Texan, airs every Saturday morning between 11:00 and 1:00 PM on 950 KPRC. Michael is an expert on everything technology related, and he is going to share his insight and thoughts on technology issues that we're facing as the Covid pandemic persists. With everyone working from home, and taking advantage of online exercise classes, online cooking, and substituting the online movie experience for the closed mega theater, I am wondering if this is putting a significant crunch on the internet bandwidth we all need. Listen along and see what the High-Tech Texan has to say! The next topic will be delving into is constipation. For many, this is just an embarrassing conversation to have, or the butt of a joke. The reality is, Constipation is a significant problem that many people face. This is not just a condition of old people, but I see in my own practice an unusually high number of people in their early 20s with constipation causing significant problems for them. While it's true that Constipation becomes more problematic as we age, the global problem of obesity and its low fiber, low nutrition foods that many are eating, is a driving force when we talk about constipation. The human body was not meant to eat processed foods. A worlds expert on constipation, all things digestive, is my good friend and colleague Dr. Eamonn Quigley. He'll be sharing his expert knowledge on Constipation and how we need to think about it. Each year, approximately 43,000 new cases of #livercancer are diagnosed, and approximately 31,000 people will die. Liver cancer rates have tripled since 1980, most likely due to increased rates of #hepatitisC, #fattyliver, and #hepatitisB. This week on Dr. Galati‘s weekly radio program, Your Health First, he interviewed Dr. Sudha Kodali, a partner of his at Houston Methodist Hospital. They discussed the underlying risk factors for liver cancer, the need to know your liver test results, and not ignore subtle abnormalities of you are liver chemistries. One of the growing public health concerns that we have been speaking about for years is related to the global obesity epidemic which resulted in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a leading cause of liver cancer. Left untreated, liver cancer is universally fatal. Being aware of your risk factors, and getting early intervention, can lead to an excellent outcome. 17 Nov 2020 | Cancer Prevention Podcast | 00:39:16
This week on the Dr. Joe Galati podcast, we are talking about the month of November being Stomach Cancer Awareness month. There is a lot of information to gather here, considering many of the common G.I. complaints that people have could be early warning signals that something more serious is wrong. Don’t ignore the symptoms that are perceived as being OK to have, such as bloating, nausea, heartburn, and difficulty swallowing. Like all serious conditions, early intervention is the key to long-term survival. Making a return visit is Dr. Sudha Kodali, answering some additional questions about liver cancer from her October appearance on the program. Check out that podcast here. Here again, it's the awareness of our own personal risk factors, and symptoms that we need to be familiar with. Lastly, some exciting new research out of Sweden is indicating that exercise increases the function of the CD8+ white blood cells in fighting different types of cancer. Yet another reason to get up, dust off your sneakers, and get moving. 03 Aug 2021 | #COVID19 Questions and Answers | 00:39:00
So here we are in August 2021, and we are still talking about the COVID-19 pandemic. Just when we thought we would be getting our lives back under control, the delta variant emerged. The initial excitement about the vaccine has waned, and we are once again seeing a surge of cases in our hospitals and intensive care units. There continues to be confusion about wearing masks, how we conduct ourselves in public, what is the real story on breakthrough cases in those that have been previously vaccinated, and how do we addressed those that simply are not interested in getting vaccinated? Unfortunately, the public health experts that we rely on, as well as our political leaders, are finding it more and more difficult to provide the general public with a coherent set of recommendations and guidelines that we can live by. This inconsistent messaging only feeds the fire of noncompliance, and of course, more cases and the potential for more deaths. This week on our weekly radio program, Your Health First, it was a pleasure to have back on Dr. David Pate. Following his long tenure at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston's Texas Medical Center, he relocated to Idaho where he was president and CEO of the St. Luke's Health System. Recently retired, he has done an excellent job of articulate what we need to know regarding COVID-19, the vaccine, and what we should all be thinking about. I highly suggest all of you subscribe to his blog, and follow his thoughts each week. #covid #civid19 #covid19vaccine #coronavirus #pandemic Websites to remember:Dr. Galati's newsletter sign-up Medical Practice: Liver Specialists of Texas Dr. Galati's Book Site: Eating Yourself Sick Facebook: Dr. Joe Galati Dr. Galati's YouTube: YouTube Channel Please send feedback and suggestion. 10 Dec 2021 | Healthy Christmas Gift Ideas | 00:21:34
Gift Giving Ideas! This time of the year, we enjoy talking about holiday gift giving, and we try to share some ideas with our listeners regarding gifts that may support health and wellness. Different categories of gifts include those related to the kitchen and cooking, which hopefully will encourage the gift receiver to get a bit more creative in the kitchen and prepare more home cooked meals. As we've spoken about before, nothing is going to beat a home cooked meal with regard to nutrition and it's supporting wellness.Other gift categories include those related to exercise and fitness, be it the various forms of apparel that we wear to have a more comfortable workout, or some of the new wearable technology to give feedback on how you are performing.Regardless of the cost or category of gift, all I ask is that you think about sharing gifts that will be fun, but also promote some aspect of wellness for the end user of the gift.Where to find Dr. Joe Galati and his team:Dr. Galati's newsletter sign-up Medical Practice: Liver Specialists of Texas Dr. Galati's Book Site: Eating Yourself Sick Facebook: Dr. Joe Galati Dr. Galati's YouTube Channel Please send feedback and suggestion. This week on YOUR HEALTH FIRST, we had the pleasure of interviewing 2 new team members of LIVER SPECIALISTS OF TEXAS.Lauren McNamara, registered dietitian along with Natalie Amante, physician assistant, sat down and spoke with DR. JOE GALATI regarding the role of nutrition, obesity, and metabolic syndrome in the eventual development, and reversal, of non alcoholic fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease is the leading cause of chronic inflammation of the liver, the leading cause of cirrhosis and liver cancer, and the leading disease of the liver that ultimately results in the need for a liver transplant. The vast majority of the cases of fatty liver disease are a direct result of obesity, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or triglycerides, and hypertension. This past week on the radio, we had Natalie Amante, physician assistant at Liver Specialist of Texas, talking about understanding your personal dashboard. We have talked about this topic extensively in the past, but it is always worth bringing up again. Considering the patients we see, especially those with acute and chronic liver disease, there is a general misunderstanding of the importance of abnormal labs and other testing results. To maintain one's health, it is necessary to fully understand the implications of these abnormal lab test results, and similarly, abnormal x-rays or scans that are done. Hosted on Acast. 17 Jul 2022 | Wellness: Doing All You Can? | 00:15:33
This is one of the shorter podcast episodes Doctors Galati is sharing with you. The central theme here is, once again, the cost of wellness. He shares a real-life story of a friend and colleague who has suddenly become ill. For most of us, these sudden illnesses are never planned or anticipated. They catch us when we least suspect it. As a result, ongoing lack of attention to your health and wellness does have its consequences when you are most vulnerable. If you have challenges with obesity, address it today; if you've been told that your physician that your cholesterol or blood sugar is just a “touch” elevated, address it today; if you just aren't feeling well, check in with your doctor today and get things addressed. #wellness #wellnessjourney Where to find Dr. Joe Galati and his team: Dr. Galati's newsletter sign-up Medical Practice: Liver Specialists of Texas Dr. Galati's Book Site: Eating Yourself Sick Facebook: Dr. Joe Galati Dr. Galati's YouTube Channel Please send feedback and suggestion. This week on , we spent time talking about modifiable risk factors to reduce your chance of developing cancer. The special guest this week was oncologist Susan Escudier, who practices at Texas Oncology . With regard to cancer, there are multiple modifiable lifestyle changes that can have a big impact on the eventual risk for cancer and its development. The American Cancer Society recently published data indicating that 42% of cancer cases and 45% of cancer deaths in the United states are linked to modifiable risk factors. In other words, these cases could be prevented. Based on recent data, that translates to 660,000 cancer cases and 265,000 cancer deaths that could have been prevented. The main modifiable risk factors include smoking, secondhand smoke, obesity, excessive alcohol intake, eating red and processed meats, diets low in fruits and vegetables as well as dietary calcium, physical inactivity, UV radiation, and specific cancer associated infections including H. pylori, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, herpesvirus type 8, HIV, and human papilloma virus. In the weeks to come on the radio, we are going to continue this series of modifiable lifestyle changes and focus on other disease states including heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, dementia, lung disease, and diabetes. 01 Jan 2023 | Ready for Emergency Surgery? | 00:13:49
Happy 2023! For this podcast episode, I want to share with you an unexpected medical emergency I faced right before Christmas, which warranted emergent surgery. All turned out well, and on the grand scheme of things it brought to light an important health and wellness concept I want to share with you all.Getting perfectly honest with yourself, are you, right now, prepare to undergo any kind of emergency surgery, emergency procedure, or face an unexpected health crisis? It's very well known that if you are not in optimal medical health, any type of minor emergency that you face is going to be associated with unwanted complications. Those individuals that have chronic medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, liver disease, and kidney disease are going to fare far worse than those without these chronic conditions. So with that said, what are you doing to prepare yourself for these possible scenarios? The vast majority of chronic illnesses can be medically managed (or better yet prevented) reducing the risk of these medical/surgical complications. With the New Year starting, this would be a great objective for all of us. Take inventory, see what health and wellness issues need to be addressed, and get it taken care of. 20 Jan 2023 | Career Success and Wellness Success? | 00:06:51
This week we share with you a brief podcast episode which came from this past Sunday evening. On the radio, I talked about the various mentoring activities I been involved in over the past several years, working with high school students through young entrepreneur's. The theme of personal and business success is commitment, a sincere desire to achieve, put in the time, and do not take any shortcuts. It dawned on me that these same methodologies applied to your own good health. To remain healthy, you need to remain committed. You also need a sincere approach to your own health and not take shortcuts. Just like working towards a successful career takes time, not putting in the time for her own health is associated with less than adequate results. Feel free to share this podcast with those you feel would benefit most. Of course we want you to follow us along on your favorite podcast site making sure you never miss a single episode. #personalsuccess #personalwellness #healthcarementoring Hosted on Acast. 25 Jan 2023 | What is a FODMAP Diet? | 00:17:54
So what is a FODMAP diet?FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols, which are short-chain carbohydrates (sugars) that the small intestine absorbs poorly. Some people experience digestive distress after eating them. Some of the symptoms that people may develop, if they are intolerant of these foods high in fodmap, include stomach bloating and distention, intestinal gas and flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, and cramps. With a low FODMAP diet, you are eliminating foods that are high in FODMAP. Once your intestinal symptoms improve, it would be appropriate to slowly resume their consumption to see which one of these foods causes you intestinal problems. If you're fortunate to identify these foods, you would want to avoid or limit them while not worrying too much about the other foods that aren't problematic for you. In this podcast, I speak with Lauren Mahesri, registered dietitian with Liver Specialists of Texas. Lauren will outline the approach to intestinal gas, the low FODMAP diet, the pros and cons of such a diet, and how to approach certain food sensitivities. For more information on FODMAP diet and foods that are both high and low, follow the links that we include for you below. #fodmap #intestinalgas #liverspecialistsoftexas #nutrition Hosted on Acast.
