30 May 2023Are Herbs Just Suppressing Symptoms? #5100:42:03

Herbs can help resolve the underlying issue of a health condition and work towards a sustainable, long-term improvement of health. But they can also control symptoms for short-term relief in effective ways and with way fewer side effects than pharmaceuticals. Using herbs to manage symptoms can help to stop the downward spiral of health problems, but it should ideally be combined with herbs that address the actual root cause of the problem for a long-term cure. For example, a person with high blood pressure could use herbal diuretics to lower blood pressure, but this would just suppress a symptom, similar to a drug (but with fewer side effects). Ideally, this approach would be combined with herbs and foods that actually repair and strengthen the cardiovascular system, for example, hawthorn berries and garlic. Listen to the episode for more examples, and how I treated my intense neck pain last week with Lobelia tincture!

29 Dec 2021Healing Successes of my Clients in 2021 and the Herbs who helped us achieve that #1900:56:25

Time for a review of my professional life as an herbalist in 2021! In this episode, I will share with you some of the greatest healing successes my clients achieved this year! We will take a close look at some of the therapeutic strategies, like balancing the doshas from an ayurvedic standpoint of view. But as always, the herbs will be the Stars of the Show! If I would measure the amount of Ashwagandha my clients combined took this year, it would be for sure in the kilos, not grams! But not only exotic adaptogens from the Asian continent have done expected wonders this year, one of my most recommended herbs this year was actually Fennel seed and other so-called carminatives that might grow wild outside for you to harvest! That's because we can't get better long term if we don't address the root cause, a typical one being digestive issues.

Thanks to all of you for your diligence in taking your health care into your own hands and learning more about medicinal herbs! It has been a year full of healing and learning for my clients and many of my listeners. And your healing successes came from consistent effort and knowledge, not from miracle cures. Health consultations are available through my website.

Dive deeper into Herbalism with me! Get access to my exclusive weekly posts and videos with herbal inspiration for your plant studies! I will take you on herb walks, show you how to formulate herbs and make preparations, including mini-classes about what I call the herb of the week, herb of the month, and herb of the season practice which, if practiced regularly, will give you direct hands-on experience. Join the membership program for the price of a coffee a month and let me be your guide and teacher on your learning journey! You can also ask me questions.

02 May 2023I took Gotu Kola for 12 months and this happened! #4900:31:26

Gotu Kola or Centella Asiatica is a superior nerve tonic from Ayurveda. When I had my own health challenge with Hashimoto's, Hypothyroidism, and brain fog I took Gotu Kola for over a year and after two weeks of taking it, I couldn't believe the amazing results. Gotu Kola's effect on the nervous system is pretty outstanding. It doesn't really fit into the category of calming nervines or sedatives like Lemonbalm, Lavender, Hops, Valerian, and Poppy Seed. Its effect is more long-term and it completely renews the nerve cells on a physical level. That's why I call it a nerve tonic. We have other categories of herbs, besides nervines, to address the nervous system, for example, adaptogens like Ashwagandha and Rhodiola, circulatories like Gingko, and even the anti-inflammatory herb Turmeric can be very beneficial for conditions like ADHD, anxiety, depression, focus, and memory as many scientific studies have confirmed.

For more details about herbs for the nervous system including dosages, you might consider joining my classes on Zoom!

31 Aug 2021Replacing Drugs with Herbs - How to Transition Safely #1000:47:30

Is it possible to make the transition from pharmaceuticals to natural remedies? Professional Herbalist Tamara Hiller discusses the nitty-gritty of this tricky situation. Many people with chronic health conditions who are taking drugs wish to have a natural alternative for pharmaceuticals. But herbs work very differently in the body than drugs, and of course, ideally, you should have an experienced natural health practitioner to guide you through this process. Tamara talks us through different scenarios, whether you are taking drugs to lower blood pressure or cholesterol, to manage your allergies, headaches, hormones for your thyroid, or drugs to manage anxiety or depression. You will learn what are important things to consider and get some concrete examples of safe transitioning.

25 Nov 2021Effective Natural Remedies for Pain Relief #1700:40:46

In today's episode herbalist and midwife Tamara Hiller teaches us about herbs for Pain relief. From Poppy Seed to Willow bark, some of these have inspired the pharmaceutical drugs that we have available today. Drugs work great, but they have side effects. Taking herbs in their natural form, straight from nature is not only safer but also very effective if taken in the right way and dosage. Nobody should have to suffer, so this is a timeless skill to learn for every human on this planet! Imagine, next time you have a friend over and she asks you for a pill for her headache or period cramps, you can offer her a tea and she will be introduced into the amazing world of Medicinal Herbs and their effectiveness! Of course is makes a difference what type of pain is present and what is the root cause. Is it tension, an infection, or inflammation? Depending on this it's possible to choose the right herb, and Tamara introduces you to many of them, some popular like Cannabis and CDB Oil, others more obscure and underrated like Piscidia (Jamaican Dogwood), Dipsacus and Butterbur. And others you know well, but wouldn't have thought they can help with pain like Cayenne, Arnica, Ginger, Green Tea, Valerian, Turmeric and common nutritive supplements like Magnesium and Vitamin D.

Let's dig into the weeds! You will definitely learn a lot in this episode!

12 Jan 2023My Rosehip, Ginger and Garlic Experiment #4500:36:45

I took a combination of Rosehips, Garlic, and Ginger for the immune-boosting benefits for over two months, and in this episode, I share with you what I learned and the results on my health. I took Rosehips in different ways, a few that I harvested myself, but mainly the dried rosehips or powdered rosehips that I bought by the pound. I soaked them, had them for breakfast and in smoothies, and made really strong deep red tea. The powder does contain also the seeds which are high in galactolipids, proven to improve joint pain in several studies.

14 Feb 2022How to Balance Vata Dosha and Fly High without Losing Your Mind to Anxiety and Insomnia #2500:49:16

Let's dig into the Ayurvedic concept of tridosha, or Vata, Pitta and Kapha, a system of categorization based on the five elements that can help us understand our health challenges better, and keep us balanced! I use this a lot in my clinical practice as an herbalist. Today we will talk about strategies, including herbs, to keep Vata dosha in check, but this episode will be useful to Kaphas and Pittas also. Vata can "corrupt" any dosha, and it increases as we age, so we will all get our share of it eventually. Pacifying Vata, or any dosha, is a daily task for balanced health and fulfillment in life!

Get access to exclusive videos and posts through my ko-fi donation site (like Patreon). For the price of a cup of coffee (or herbal tea in this case!) you get my cold and flu protocol with all herbs and dosages that I posted a few weeks ago, and a video with my deep dive into Ginger, which is such a versatile and tasty herb! I show you how I make my ginger tea and other preparations and we discuss the many benefits, from immunity, over throat ache to migraines! Last week's video was about Astragalus and my favorite and very tasty way to take it and this week I show you my beautiful flowering almond trees and the medicine that hides in them.  If you join my membership program on ko-fi (monthly donation), you get access to all of these and future videos and posts, which are created to help you on your herbal learning journey and to inspire you. Let me be your guide and teacher! Thank you so much for supporting the creation of this podcast and of my Youtube Channel!

We are also starting with our case studies, this is the middle tier of the ko-fi membership, which is a very accessible way to get actual personalized health advice on a problem, which could be about your own or a friend's health issue. This is an amazing opportunity to look over the shoulder of a practicing, clinical herbalist, and watch me going through the assessment process and creating a personalized, real herbal health protocol for somebody (this could be you!). Or I can help you to identify your dosha and how to balance it! We can all learn so much from this!

14 Jun 2022Herbs for the Thyroid and How to Reverse Hashimoto's Naturally #3400:43:35

Fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, brain fog and constipation might be signs that the thyroid is not working optimally. But no worries, of course, there are safe and completely natural methods, including herbs, available to us that can help with Hypothyroidism and other thyroid problems. Did you know that in most cases an under-functioning thyroid is caused by an inflammatory auto-immune disease called Hashimoto's? Yes, and that gives us a clue to the root causes of it. We have to look at digestion, inflammation, hormonal regulation, and immune function! Adaptogens come to mind, Ashwagandha, Eleuthero, but also herbs for the brain like Gotu Kola, and anti-inflammatories like turmeric can be very helpful.

23 Nov 2022Are Elderberries Overrated? Herbs to Strengthen Immunity #4200:31:07

Elderberry, Garlic, Turmeric, Echinacea, Astragalus, and Ginger are some of the many herbs available to us, to make sure we have healthy and strong immunity in the colder season. But.... what to do if Elderberries are sold out again at the herb store? No worries at all, in this episode we'll dive deep into what is so special (but not unique) about Elderberries, these deep red plant pigments called anthocyanins, a type of flavonoid. Luckily we don't find them exclusively in Elderberries but also in many deep red, purple, blue, or black fruits and veggies. Just to name a few, blackberries, aronia berries, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, black plums, cherries, dark grapes, pomegranates, purple cabbage, red onions, purple corn, black beans, black rice, and black soybeans. Instead of buying overpriced elderberry syrup from the pharmacy, we can find some of these alternatives in the grocery store or in nature. These plant pigments have so many health benefits, for the heart, arteries, and brain and to fight inflammation and free radicals, that it is a good idea to incorporate them into your diet on a daily basis.

30 Oct 2022Not Getting Results with Herbs? Likely Reasons #4100:44:04

"I have tried everything." This is a phrase I sometimes hear from my clients. Looking at what they actually tried so far, which herbs and dosages, I must say, no, the herbs are definitely not to blame for the lack of results. High expectations on one herb (the miracle herb! it must exist! ...no it doesn't...), as opposed to a complete health protocol that might include several herbs and supplements to get somebody better, and also the lack of knowledge about dose, how quickly or slowly a certain herb works, and for how long you have to take it to get results are the most likely reasons why someone hasn't gotten the health results they wished for so far.

06 Aug 2022How to Prevent the Most Common Cause of Death: Herbs for the Heart #3700:40:36

Most deaths worldwide are caused by heart disease. Over a long period of time, cholesterol silently accumulates in blood arteries, sometimes going unnoticed or not receiving adequate attention. We should all consider prevention because of this. The underlying causes include aspects of lifestyle and food, but fortunately, there are numerous herbal therapies that are readily available and have been scientifically proven to promote cardiovascular health. For instance, the traditional heart herbs of Western herbalism include Garlic, Hawthorn, and Motherwort; the Ayurvedic herbs Arjuna and Ashwagandha; and food-like anti-inflammatories and antioxidants such as Berries, Turmeric, and Hibiscus.

13 Dec 2021The Ethnobotany of Christmas and the Winter Solstice #1800:32:06

From the shamanic origins of Santa Claus to the Ethnobotany of Christmas, Herbalist & Midwife Tamara Hiller takes you on a sled-flight through the icy lands of Siberia, where Shamans stick the little red Amanita mushrooms on fir trees to dry them in sun, then put them all in the big sack, going home, entering the house through the chimney and hanging the mushrooms in socks around the fire to dry further. Just that this is not a tale, it's the true history of Northern reindeer-herding tribes and their traditions. She connects the dots to Christmas in Germany where she grew up, baking cookies spiced with Ginger, Cinnamon, and Clove with her Grandma, and to the old pagan custom of the "raw nights" which mark the darkest days of the year, the smudging of incense to cleanse the house of bad energies and the waiting and hoping for the return of the sun by our ancestors. Tamara gives us a little peek into her mixed feelings about Christmas and consumerism and why she returned to celebrating this day with her kids, filling it with meaning through the connection to the natural world and its cycles.

What about giving your loved ones a meaningful gift in the form of a health consultation with Herbalist Tamara? You will get a beautiful gift card to lay under the Christmas Tree.

10 May 2022Medicinal Mushrooms, Reishi, Cordyceps, Lion's Mane, Turkey Tail, Chaga and Shiitake #3200:41:45

Mushrooms are in their very own category of natural remedies, widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. They all look and taste very different and are used in specific ways. Some are delicious to cook with, and others are so hard that you need a saw to cut them! We will talk about the different ways to use them, and why they are so beneficial for our health. They can boost our immunity, help us deal with stress and fatigue, improve allergies, prevent cancer growth, and rejuvenate our brains, all of this thanks to amazing constituents like anti-oxidants, beta-glucans, lectins, and polysaccharide-K. PSK is actually the most sold anti-cancer drug in Japan. Mushrooms can even produce Vitamin D if they were exposed to the sun.

30 Jun 2022Herbs for the Liver - Understanding Fatty Liver Disease #3500:33:47

Our liver does a lot of heavy work for us every day, let's make sure it stays healthy! Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is on the rise, but luckily, in its early stages, it is reversible. Understanding the mechanism makes it obvious that weight control and insulin resistance play a big role. We will discuss some herbs that help us to keep our blood glucose levels stable, like bitter melon and fenugreek. You will also learn how nervines and adaptogens can have a beneficial effect. But of course, we will also look deeply into liver herbs, also called hepatics, or hepatoprotectives which are the main pillar to improving the health of our liver. Some of my favorites are milk thistle seeds, burdock and dandelion root, tap root vegetables like beets and carrots, Turmeric, Schisandra berry and Celandine!

07 Feb 2022Post-Viral Fatigue, Long Covid & Loss of Sense of Smell. Schisandra, Cordyceps, Gotu Kola & Ginseng00:35:35

Let's look into Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome and how herbs can possibly help. This is for educational purposes only. Always seek medical help if needed. Long Covid can be serious and should not be left untreated. Let's look into some natural healing strategies that might be of benefit to strengthen your body! The herbs discussed apply to the recovery process after illness, especially ongoing fatigue, and are rooted in the wisdom of traditional systems like Ayurveda and TCM, or modern scientific research. We talk about adaptogens like Schisandra berry and Cordyceps which also support lung function and adaptogens that can give us our energy and stamina back, like Eleuthero, Rhodiola, and Ginseng. Gotu Kola is my favorite nervine from Ayurveda, it not only helps with brain fog and concentration but is said to restore loss of sense of smell and taste!

21 Feb 2022Taming Pitta-Fire: Ayurvedic Doshas 101, part 2! #2601:01:11

Digging deeper into VPK, or Vata Pitta and Kapha, the Ayurvedic doshas! Let's learn how we can keep our dosha in balance throughout our life, throughout the seasons and in our everyday life. There are so many choices we can take throughout our daily life that can aggravate our dosha, which means it will get worse or will tame and balance it, which is the wiser choice! What is the ideal dosha to look for in a partnership so you can balance each other out? Which of the doshas lives the longest? Who craves sweet food, who craves fatty food, and who is the most prone to addictions? I couldn't stop weaving anecdotes into this episode, but I think it will help you make sense of VPK! We'll go a bit deeper into Pitta dosha today, representing fire-water, but I cover useful info for all three doshas!

09 Dec 2022Blend Your Own Delicious and Healthy Herbal Seasonal Tea #4300:38:01

Let's formulate an herbal winter tea blend! Or actually, no matter what the season is currently, let's learn about some basic herbal formulation principles which take climate and season into account. This is what's in my favorite decoction at the moment and how I make it: First I boil a few slices of Ginger with Dandelion root and a teaspoon full of my so-called Chai base (freshly ground up Cinnamon, Cardamom, Clove and long Pepper/Pippali), and I simmer this for 30 minutes. Then I add my aromatic flowers and leaves, Chrysanthemum, Tulsi and Spearmint and steep for 5 to 10 minutes. To balance the bitterness I sometimes add a few green dried Stevia leaves or chopped Licorice root for sweetness. Can you guess the therapeutic benefits of this combination? How could you adapt this blend to YOUR specific needs and seasonal circumstances? Maybe you want to add a bit of Eleuthero root for more energy, Burdock to keep your skin clear through liver support, or something moistening/demulcent to balance the potential dryness of the herb blend, like Linden (Tilia) or Marshmallow root, or maybe some extra digestive support with Fennel and Anise. It's more about grasping the concept and experimenting for yourself! Enjoy!

Would you like to come to my online classes on zoom? We have exciting topics coming up, and the reduced price is available for all who sign up before the end of December! 10 Sep 2021Maca, Astragalus, Tulsi - Why these Herbs are so Widely Misunderstood #1100:44:39

Some Herbs get suddenly and randomly trendy for no specific reason and taken out of their context, the original natural healing system that they were used in. In this episode Professional Herbalist Tamara explains why we misunderstand popular herbs like Maca root, Astragalus, and Tulsi, and use them in the wrong way, wrong dose, wrong duration, or with unrealistic expectations about their effects. One of the biggest problems in Natural Health today is the misinformation on the internet, and the abysmal imbalance between the many herbal products that we have available to us today, and the few thoroughly educated Herbalists and Natural Practitioners who could help us understand the correct applications of these herbs.

09 Feb 2023Happy Herb Cacao #4600:34:00

We all know Cacao as the wonderful plant that chocolate is made of, but its benefits go way beyond that! Cacao has medicinal properties, is high in antioxidants and can energize you gently and lift your mood! I will share my experience of living for several years on a Cacao farm in Brazil, and the process of harvesting, fermenting, drying and roasting the cacao beans. You will also learn the best way to make a tea of cacao, which is not by using the nibs or beans, but by using the husk! The beans/nibs are high in fat, so water extraction (tea) is not the best way to use them. Of course, the main medicine is in the beans, which is the main part to use medicinally, and a moderate daily dose of them can give many health benefits, and tastes delicious!

22 Jul 2022Food Intolerances - Gluten-Free Forever? #3600:32:24

Chances are you have asked yourself if you have food intolerances, they are so common today as a result of our modern diet and lifestyle. Symptoms range from gas and bloating to headaches and fatigue. Elimination diets can be helpful initially, but they don't treat the underlying cause, and there is the risk of developing other intolerances or even auto-immune diseases. So what can we do about this? The solution lies in a thoughtful multi-step herbal protocol, that includes repairing your digestive tract and rebalancing your immune system.

03 Sep 2022Adaptogens and Tonic Herbs for Stress and Fatigue #3900:36:33

Adaptogens and tonic herbs in general are my favorite category of medicinal herbs, and I use them a lot for myself and clients in my health practice. They are safe and non-toxic and help us deal with stress, improve the immune system, regulate hormones, and improve our thinking, mood, anxiety, and fatigue. Absolute all-rounders to help us deal with modern life's challenges! Let's learn about the difference between central nervous system stimulants like coffee, and adaptogens. In a nutshell, coffee depletes your energy and adaptogens actually build up your energy reserves, in the long term. Some of the more known adaptogens are Eleuthero, Ginseng, Schisandra, Reishi, and Rhodiola, but there are a lot more that are less known but equally effective.

30 Jan 2022The Perfect Bowel Movement - Herbs for Constipation, Laxatives, Fiber, Bitters and Demulcents #2200:41:17

The art and science of the perfect bowel movement! Do you think you don't have constipation? Think again! Let's discuss, transit time, consistency, frequency and herbs that can help us to get regular. All disease starts in the gut, so this is a serious topic. Luckily Herbalism has all the answers and many options to create the perfect gut protocol. We discuss fibers and demulcents, like psyllium, flaxseed and dried prunes, Magnesium with its osmotic action that draws more moisture to the bowels, and herbs with a laxative or purgative action like Senna, Cascara Sagrada, Aloe, Rhubarb root, and Haritaki which is an herb from Ayurveda, part of the popular formula Triphala. These herbs act on the peristalsis of the large intestine, that's why we also call them squeezers. But there is even more to perfect digestion, like Probiotics, herbs that dispel gas and enhance our digestive fire called carminatives, bitters and non-herbal ways for a better experience on the toilet, like squatting.

Get access to exclusive videos and posts through my ko-fi donation site (like Patreon). For the price of a cup of coffee (or herbal tea in this case!) you get my cold and flu protocol with all herbs and dosages that I posted last week, and a video with my deep dive into Ginger, which is such a versatile and tasty herb! I show you how I make my ginger tea and other preparations and we discuss the many benefits, from immunity, over throat ache to migraines! If you join my membership program on ko-fi (monthly donation), you get access to future videos and posts too, which are created to help you on your herbal learning journey. 11 Apr 2022How NOT to take Ashwagandha and other misconceptions about this fantastic herb from Ayurveda #3000:53:17

Ashwagandha is an amazing herb for stress, anxiety, insomnia, energy and stamina from Ayurveda, but its popularity in the west also leads to many misconceptions. There are ideal and less ideal ways to take it, wrong assumptions about dosage and a lot of confusion about possible side effects. Let's shed some light on this outstanding herb for the benefit of our health! Ayurveda is part of my extensive, in-depth training in Herbal Medicine and Ashwagandha is an herb I almost can't imagine practicing without. It has helped to turn around the health of many of my clients, always embedded in a personalized health care protocol. But I see a lot of misconceptions about it being spread on the internet which I will address in this episode.

16 Sep 2023My Botanical Skincare Routine! Hydrolates, Balms and Soaps #5400:35:35

I enjoy making my own skin moisturizer out of tropical butters like shea butter, cacao and cupuaçu butter, melting those, and adding luxurious plant oils like Argan, Jojoba, and Seabuckthornfruit Oil for a creamy consistency. I don't have to add any preservatives or emulsifiers because I don't add water to those creams. Instead, I spray my face with Rose Water or Witch Hazel Hydrolate before applying the face balm for added moisture and a toning, pore-refining effect. Lavender and Cistus grow abundantly around me, so I use them to make my own herbal-infused oils, which I use directly as a body oil, or in my creams. Some oils have strong medicinal properties, you don't even have to infuse herbs into them, like Andiroba and Copaiba Oil from Brazil, and many others. 26 Sep 2022My Trip to Scotland and the History of Western Herbalism #4000:37:58

Visiting Scotland and marveling at the juicy blackberries, rosehips, hawthorn, and elderberries led me to ponder about the history of Western Herbalism and our relationship to the plants that grow around us. Why do we use the pants we use? What is our role in preserving and passing on the knowledge? How did our perception of health and healing change through history? And, where are we now?

I visited the amazing Scottish Wild Food Festival organized by a team around Rox Madeira who I found through listening to her podcast "The Sage's Cabin". It was lovely to meet her and her family at the festival, and we enjoyed taking part in so many activities, from herb walks to workshops and trying wild foods and herbs in beautiful nature. I'm so thankful for this experience.

19 Jul 2021Why Herbalism is the Opposite of Homeopathy #701:21:19

Why I don't like to be called a homeopath, by mistake, because being an Herbalist I work in a way practically opposite to what Homeopathy is based on and both systems have pretty much no overlap at all. What is the allopathic model versus the homeopathic model, and what are the striking differences of both systems. Why I stopped using homeopathy, not because I have anything against it, but because discovering real, actual herbs that have a smell, taste, color and form are so much more satisfying and often also more effective or let's say appropriate in certain situations. How do we know which therapies are important for each health complaint and type of person?

In this episode, we go deep down the rabbit hole, from the very subtle therapies to the most invasive the modern medicine has to offer, how to weigh if there are appropriate to use, because of course, invasive therapies like surgery, suppressive pharmaceuticals, chemotherapy and radiation also erode our health, but might be necessary to save lives. Why I don't like natural medicines to be called alternative or complementary, as if the currently dominant model of modern medicine would be a superior choice in any case, which of course it isn't, given the inevitable side effects. But also because natural medicine can do things for our health that modern medicine cannot do, and vice versa. So they are not interchangeable. This episode is a bit less practical, more meta and philosophical, but I hope you enjoy it, it's definitely a discussion worth having to deepen our understanding of health and natural medicine.

28 Oct 2021How to Best Take Your Herbs - All About Teas, Tinctures, Capsules and Powders #1600:43:02

You can take your herbs in many different ways, as tea, decoction, in form of a tincture, or encapsulated to just name the most commonly used preparations. And there are huge differences in the therapeutic effect, depending on the herb, and the form of taking your herb is not always interchangeable. Traditional Chinese Medicine uses mainly decoction, a form of tea where you boil the herb for several hours, which is a practical way to use herbs for the usual higher doses in TCM. In tincture form, you basically dilute your herb with alcohol, and you might not be getting a sufficiently high dose if you take only a couple of drops per day. Tinctures are practical for very potent herbs, where the dose doesn't have to be high, or when you don't have time to make tea, and for traveling. Ayurveda, on the other hand, uses often herbs in powder form, which also has certain advantages and disadvantages. The good old basic tea or infusion might be one of the most ancient ways of taking your herbs, but don't think you can always rely on the small amounts that are in the average tea bag. This might not be enough to get a therapeutic effect, and dried bulk herbs by the pound might be the way to go! You will definitely learn a lot in this episode!

14 May 2021Safety of Herbs in Pregnancy, a complex issue for Doulas, Midwives and pregnant women #300:37:07

Which herbs are safe to take in pregnancy and is erring on the side of caution our best bet? Midwife and Herbalist Tamara explains different considerations in this important and tricky issue. So we do agree that we have to be cautious about emmenagogues in pregnancy. But herbs that bring on menstruation are not necessarily abortifacients and what is exactly is an emmenagogue anyway? Herbal literature doesn't always agree on that. Do animal model studies have any practical value at all or are they not transferable to humans in real life conditions? What about historical actual experience with herbs, what if science contradicts it? Are we losing our tools, the herbs, if women listen more to unfounded warnings on the internet than listening to actual experts? Hope you enjoy this deep-dive into the subject, no easy answers guaranteed but with a lot to think about and research further!

20 Apr 2022Herbs for Fatigue, Exhaustion and Burn-Out #3100:40:13

Let's discuss some herbs that can help with fatigue, exhaustion and even complete burn-out. Exhausted mom syndrome anyone? Being tired in itself might not be a dangerous health concern, but we also shouldn't ignore it until the point of no return. Fatigue can be seriously depressing and keep us from living our full potential. To understand the mechanism of fatigue we can get great insights from Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, both have a much more holistic view of health than our modern western approach. In TCM there is the concept of Jing and Chi, forms of energy. Chi is renewable, but regarding the Jing, we have only a certain amount from birth on, and we are constantly leaking Jing. The goal is to slow down the leaking of Jing through food, herbs and lifestyle changes! A similar concept in Ayurveda would be Ojas, a form of concentrated energy stored in the body. We will discuss types of food that replenish ojas. By the way, fasting and certain detoxes can also deplete ojas, so they are not advisable if we are in a current state of deep-seated fatigue. On the herbal side, we discuss adaptogens which are amazing in restoring our strength and stamina and making us more resistant to stress. Some can be quite energizing! A good long-term fix for low energy levels.

06 Jun 2021Adaptogens - Herbs for Chronic Health Issues in Midlife #400:48:16

In this episode, I talk about adaptogens, what they are and how this category of herbs, which are mainly roots, work for our health. Ginseng is the classic adaptogen, or tonic herb, as it would be called in Traditional Chinese Medicine, but there are many other herbs that have similar benefits, like Ashwagandha, Rhodiola and Eleuthero which is also called Siberian Ginseng. We talk about similarities to the concept of Rasayanas in Ayurvedic Medicine and Kidney Yang Tonics in TCM, and I also mention the herb Shatavari which is maybe not a full adaptogen in the strict definition, because it has a more specific action on the female hormones whereas adaptogens have a more broad action and help with stress. But anyway, you will learn a lot about Adaptogens in this info-packed episode and how to use these herbs in the correct dose for optimal health results!

06 Nov 2023PMS is NOT Normal. Period. #5600:37:23

Let's raise awareness for hormonal fluctuations in the lives of women that make us cyclical beings, but let's not normalize period pain and PMS, because for those we have effective and safe herbal remedies! Let's talk about Vitex (Agnus Castus), Shatavari, and Dong Quai as hormonal regulators, but also liver herbs to reduce the effects of toxic estrogen metabolites like milk thistle seeds and supplements like DIM and sulforaphane, and also really important, our gut microbiome/estrobolome, which we can improve by eating a fiber-rich diet and taking probiotics if necessary. For period cramps we have herbs to regulate blood and circulation, and to lower inflammation, like hawthorn berries and rosehips! And of course, calming herbs and nervines like chamomile, hops, valerian, and adaptogens to support our mood and stress response like Rhodiola and Ashwagandha. No one has to keep suffering from PMS and period cramps!

Improving our mental health, sleep and overall health are some examples of how Herbalism can help us get through this pandemic, which goes way beyond possible treatments for Covid. We all have had our share of despair, financial worries, loneliness or anxiety, and these are definitely areas where herbs can shine! Dig into the weeds with me and let us explore some concrete ways how herbs can help us with their uplifting, calming or sedating effect when you need a good night of sleep or get relief from depressive feelings and anxious thoughts. We are all in this together and it has been a long time. By the way, studying Herbalism can be a great way to soothe your nervous system, so that's another way to help with our pandemic aches and pains and get more self-reliant in our personal health care! In this episode, you will learn about herbs you might have never heard of, like Kapikacchu (Mukuna pruriens), or Gokshura (Tribulus Terrestris), and also meet some old friends like Rhodiola and Nutmeg. On a side note, but somehow I got carried away to talk about this today, you will also learn why our libido is an important health indicator and how to boost it naturally! I also share why I want to see the herb Tribulus not only on the male athletes' supplements shelves because this herb is important especially for women! We also sometimes need to boost our testosterone to lift our mood, self-esteem and yes, increase our libido.

Listen also to episode #6 titled "I've had it!" where I share with you the detailed Covid protocol that I used when I and my family came down with the Delta Variant of Covid last July. Many of you have asked me to get a pdf with all the dosages and herbs that I had mentioned written out, so I did that and want to make it available to all of you! You can have it for totally free, just write me an email through the contact form on my website or Instagram.

07 Oct 2021No More Gas, Bloating, Burping and Reflux! Herbs for Digestive Health #1400:36:20

Many people suffer from gas, bloating, belching or acid reflux also called GERD, on a regular basis. Some even consider these "minor issues", or normal, but in reality, these are serious indicators that things are not going as they should in your digestive system. These symptoms can indicate that you have reduced absorption of nutrients in the gut, and they can get worse over time and even lead to more serious health issues down the line like food intolerances and auto-immune diseases. Luckily, we have effective and safe herbs to get our gut health back into balance! In this episode, Herbalist Tamara talks about Ayurvedic theory around our digestive fire, which can help us understand why things go wrong and how to address them. You will also learn about supplements like Magnesium and Probiotics and how they work.

18 Aug 2022Keeping Cool During Heat Waves and Wild Fires #3800:26:42

We had a few heat waves this summer, so I had plenty of opportunities to try out herbs and foods to stay cool! I made cold infusions instead of hot teas with cooling and moistening herbs like Hibiscus and Rose, and switched my regular body massage oil to cooling coconut oil. Ayurveda gives us lots of insights into the energetic qualities of herbs, and this includes how foods and herbs affect our body temperature. I will review a list of dietary recommendations for Pitta, because as we know Pitta is hot and wet, so this can give us some ideas about how to adapt our diet and herbal protocol during summer (Pitta time!). I will also mention some herbs for the lungs that are helpful if you have been close to a wildfire. In this case, we can combine cooling and demulcent herbs with lung tonics and expectorants. Plantain, Mullein, Licorice, Linden, Thyme, Coltsfoot, Elecampane, Schidsandra berry, Nettle, Cordyceps, Vasaka, and Astragalus come in very handy during emergencies like this.
