Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this special Valentine’s Day episode, we’re tickled lavender to be talking about P.J Hogan’s romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding, one of the most successful films of 1997. With a screenplay written by Ronald Bass, who had won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the Dustin Hoffman/ Tom Cruise vehicle Rain Man nine years before, this saw Julia Roberts solidify her status as the most bankable actress working in Hollywood and won Rupert Everett British Supporting Actor of the Year at the London Critics Circle Film Awards. Tonight we’ll be marching into the karaoke bar with Kimmy, played by Cameron Diaz, Michael, played by Dermot Mulroney, George, played by Rupert Everett and, of course, Jules, played by Julia Roberts. Is this the most tangled web of balloon ribbons in romcom history? Let’s crack open this baby. We should have stopped in all our evil plotting to have that manicure, but it's too late now.

09 Feb 2023An Affair To Remember (1957)00:50:56

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this irresistible, inexpensive, pink episode, we’re clutching our cigarette cases and climbing aboard the ocean liner with 1957’s An Affair to Remember. Directed by Leo McCarey and written by him along with Delmer Daves and Donald Ogden Stewart, this was a remake of McCarey’s 1939 movie Love Affair. The tale was revived yet again in 1994 by director Glenn Gordon Caron when Warren Beatty and Annette Bening took the lead roles. But tonight we’ll be focusing on what happened when Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr were put centre stage as Nickie and Terry, creating the ultimate fizzy cocktail and leading audience members through the years to surreptitiously wipe a few tears on the sleeves of their polyester cardis. What is it about this mix of adultery and PR for the Empire State Building that makes us dewy-eyed? Let’s find out. I promise not to sing.

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re speeding over the sand dunes with Alan Trustman’s 1968 heist caper The Thomas Crown Affair. Directed by Norman Jewison the year after the release of his Sidney Poitier masterpiece In the Heat of The Night and nineteen years before his Cher extravaganza Moonstruck (a big favourite of the podcast), this film was nominated for two academy awards, winning Best Original Song for Michel Legrand’s The Windmills of Your Mind and it also reinvented chess. Tonight we’ll be lighting the fire with Thomas, played by Steve McQueen and Vicki, played by Faye Dunaway. Do these two have the love of a lifetime, or are we just running a sex orgy for a couple of freaks on government funds?

23 Nov 2023Gregory’s Girl (1980)00:56:21

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

Tonight we’ll be having a kickabout with the 1980 coming-of-age romantic comedy Gregory’s Girl. Directed and written by Bill Forsyth, this is a film with a small budget and a huge legacy. How does it tackle the course of true love? What does it say about the goals of adolescent romance? Which ideas still bounce, more than forty years on from its release? To help us answer these vinegar-soaked questions is master of pop Iain McDermott, host of one of our favourite podcasts Back to Now! 09 Dec 2021Love Actually (2003)01:53:36

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

*This is the first of four Christmas bonus episodes for Christmas 2021 - series two coming in 2022!*

In this episode we’re talking about the most divisive film of the 21st century, Richard Curtis’ all-star 2003 festive platter Love Actually. Is this movie the John Lewis Pulp Fiction, Middlemarch for the Great British Bake Off generation or is it simply an ode to the all-consuming power of calories? No, but seriously, it’s Christmas. And Love Actually is one of the highest grossing comedies ever made in the UK. Let’s not casually ignore those things that really matter to… erm… Britain. And let’s go get the sh*t kicked out of us by love. Recorded in November 2021.

07 Dec 2023Barbie (2023)00:53:23

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

Tonight we’ll be going down the plastic slide with Greta Gerwig’s 2023 smash hit comedy caper Barbie. Written with Noah Baumbach, creator of 2019’s Marriage Story, this film sees director Greta Gerwig follow up the success of 2017’s Lady Bird and 2019’s Little Women. Both she and Baumbach had previously collaborated on films such as Greenberg, Frances Ha and Mistress America, but none of these projects touched the hem of the financial success of Barbie. What is it about the pairing of Barbie and Ken that has captured the public’s imagination? What does the film tell us about relationships, real world ones or otherwise? Did you lose interest in the patriarchy once you found out it wasn’t about horses.

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re talking about Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 hit Point Break. With a screenplay by W. Peter Iliff and giving Keanu Reeves his first-ever role in an action film, Point Break has been referred to by Rolling Stone magazine as the ‘wet western’ that might be ‘the greatest female-gaze action movie ever’. Pulling on Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon masks with us tonight are Johnny Utah, played by Keanu Reeves, and Bodhi, played by Patrick Swayze. 23 Jun 2022A New Leaf (1971)00:46:52

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re walking down the aisle with 1971’s A New Leaf, written and directed by Elaine May. Based on a short story by American writer Jack Richie, this movie was May’s directorial debut and made her only the third woman ever in the Directors Guild of America. Though when studio executives made edits to her original darker, three-hour cut of the movie, she tried to have her name taken off the project and unsuccessfully sued Paramount when they decided to release it anyway. We’re kind of grateful they did. Tonight we’ll be looking at mysterious ferns with Henry, played by Walter Matthau and Henrietta, played by May herself. Are these two a match made in a botanical journal? Let’s discuss. The only difference between us, Cat, is that I am a man and you are a woman and we don't have to let that interfere if we are reasonably careful.

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

Today we’re tucking into some haggis with 1993’s cult comedy classic So I Married an Axe Murderer, directed by Thomas Schlamme. Mike Myers plays a commitment-phobic chap - a recurring theme on this podcast - who meets his match in the form of the beautiful Harriet, played by Nancy Travis, though some meaty issues arise once they start to get to know one another.  If you enjoy this episode, please leave us a rating or a review in your podcast app of choice - we would appreciate it more than the world’s largest cappuccino. What is it about the pairing of Harriet and Charlie and all that comes with it that has led to this movie gathering so many devoted fans over the last thirty years? Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re whipping up some Christmas fettuccine with 2006’s The Holiday, written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers. Twinkling with a cast of A-listers and boasting a very popular Hans Zimmer score, over the last decade or so The Holiday has been slowly but surely nudging Richard Curtis’s Love Actually out of top position as the 21st century’s most revisited mistletoe comedy. What is it about this combination of mini marshmallows, eyelid snogs and nods to old Hollywood that gets us feeling fuzzy in December? Let’s pop some napkins on our heads and discuss. If you enjoy this episode please consider leaving us a nice rating or a corny review on your podcast app of choice. We like corny. 11 Nov 2021Boomerang (1992)00:43:31

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re talking about Reginald Hudlin’s 1992 movie Boomerang. With a story by Eddie Murphy and a screenplay by Saturday Night Live writers Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield, this was megastar Murphy’s first time taking the lead in an adult romantic comedy and became the 18th most successful film at the US box office that year. Sitting down to some asparagus with us at Lady Eloise’s impossibly long table tonight are Jacqueline, played by Robin Givens; Angela, played by Halle Berry and, of course, Marcus portrayed by Eddie Murphy. Do these relationships feel like the perfect pedicure we’ve been waiting all our lives for, or do they signal the end of the road?

12 Oct 2023The Empire Strikes Back (1980)00:52:58

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re bolting across the galaxy with 1980’s little-known arthouse obscurity The Empire Strikes Back. Directed by Irvin Kershner with a screenplay by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan based on a story by George Lucas, this film is arguably the most beloved space fantasy ever cooked up. Given the amount of dedicated Star Wars fans out there, we’re a little daunted to tackle the relationships in this one but this rebel alliance will rise to the challenge, with the help of a very special guest. Joining us tonight, lightsaber in hand, is the mighty Marty Mackillop, founder of The James Bond Picture Archive at Thunderballs.

30 Jun 2022True Lies (1994)00:49:41

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re galloping in to spy on 1994’s huge Arnie vehicle True Lies. Written and directed by a little-known chap named James Cameron, this movie was based on the French 1991 French comedy La Totale and became the third highest grossing film of 1994. Jamie Lee Curtis won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, Cameron was given the Saturn Award for Best Director and the horse was shamefully overlooked. Tonight we’ll be rewinding our Walkmans with Harry, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and ripping off our sleeves with Helen, played by Jamie Lee Curtis. Are these two one of the most intriguing married couples in 90s cinema? This gun’s for hire, even if we’re just dancing in the dark.

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re heading out into the blizzard with 1993’s comedy Groundhog Day. Written by Danny Rubin and Harold Ramis, who also directed the film, this large squirrel vehicle was a critical and commercial success and thirty years on from its original release it still stands as one of the most frequently-referenced romantic comedies. Are we all kept from grabbing what we really want due to being trapped in our own personal Groundhog loops? And what is it about the snowballs that fly between Rita and Phil that resonate with so many of us?

23 Dec 2021The Apartment (1960)00:47:22

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re talking about Billy Wilder’s 1960 comedy drama The Apartment. Inspired by Noel Coward’s Brief Encounter, the film was nominated for ten Oscars and won five, though the subject matter was regarded as a pretty controversial turn for Wilder after his box office smash Some Like It Hot. The movie was later developed into the musical Promises, Promises written by Neil Simon, Hal David and Burt Bacharach, which included the much-covered song ‘I’ll Never Fall in Love Again’. Tonight we’ll be baking a fruit cake for Bud, played by Jack Lemmon, and straining some spaghetti with a tennis racket for Fran, played by Shirley MacLaine. What does the connection between these two characters tell us about how the festive season can affect the lens through which we see our personal lives? And how much does it apply to life in 2021?

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re uploading the Spike Jonze 2013 movie HER and exploring the relationship between Theodore and his operating system Samantha. Among other prestigious accolades, this movie won Jonze the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, with Scarlett Johansson taking over the role of the OS system from Samantha Morton once filming had completed. Does this strange and tender relationship tell us something unsettling about where we’re all headed? Or are we just coming at this with the limited perspective of un-artificial minds?

07 Oct 2021Superman (1978)00:48:52

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re talking about Richard Donner’s Superman from the year 1978. With a screenplay by Mario Puzo, David Newman, Leslie Newman and Robert Benton; based on the DC Comics character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, this would come to be recognised among many as the godfather of superhero films. Helping us fight for truth and justice and the American way tonight are Clark Kent and Superman played by Christopher Reeve and Lois Lane, played by Margot Kidder. As one of the most notorious love triangles in the history of popular culture, is it just the basis of a simple adventure story or could it unlock the secrets of the universe?

Tonight we’ll be playing pinball with Celine and Jesse, missing a play about a confused cow in the process. Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re talking about David Frankel’s The Devil Wears Prada from the year 2006. With a screenplay by Aline Brosh McKenna and based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel rumoured to be based on her time working under Vogue editor Anna Wintour, this film earned Meryl Streep and legendary costume designer Patricia Field Oscar nominations. Tonight we’re opening up our own hideous skirt convention and dragging in Andy, played by Anne Hathaway along with her boyfriend Nate, played by Adrian Grenier and her boss Miranda, played by Meryl Streep. As Andy tries to negotiate and balance these two crucial relationships in her life, which do we think is the corn chowder and which the cube of cheese?

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re wandering into a Parisian bookshop with 2004’s Before Sunset, starring Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke and directed by Richard Linklater. With a script developed by the director with the films’ two stars and previous collaborator Kim Krizan, this film stands as the sequel to Before Sunrise and forms the second instalment of the Before trilogy. Tonight we’ll be sitting down to a coffee with Celine and Jesse, keeping an eye on those flight times all the while. To quote Jesse, as you move through life you realise that most of the people that you meet are trying to get somewhere better, they're trying to make a little bit more cash, trying to get a little more respect, have more people admire them. 26 May 2022It Happened One Night (1934)00:51:13

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re jumping on a bus with Frank Capra’s 1934 romantic comedy It Happened One Night, written by Robert Riskin. Lead by Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert, the latter being paid several times the salary of her male co-star to appear in the film, this movie was one of the last pre-code romantic comedies to be released and is one of only three films - along with Silence of the Lambs and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest - to have been awarded all five of the major Academy Awards - Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. Tonight we’ll be dunking some doughnuts with Ellie and Peter, and perhaps gnawing on a few carrots too. Are these two young people deeply in love? Or are they just ungrateful brats?

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re sweating into our jeans with 1986’s TOP GUN. Piloted by English director Tony Scott, who went on to have huge success with films such as True Romance and Enemy of the State, and written by Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr, Top Gun remains nothing less than a motorcycle straddling, towel slapping phenomenon. Tonight we’ll be soaring above the clouds with our hero Maverick and exploring his connections with the wisecracking Goose, the glamorous Charlie and the cerebral Iceman. Are the friendships we make under pressure a highway to the danger zone? You’ll never know what you can do until you get it up as high as you can go.

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re freeloading rosemary flatbread paninis with 2009’s bass-slapping bromance I LOVE YOU, MAN. Directed and co-written by John Hamburg - who had had huge success penning the scripts for Meet the Parents and Zoolander - this movie was the third collaboration for Jason Segel and Paul Rudd, who had previously worked together on the films Knocked Up and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Tonight we’ll be discussing the unlikely connection between Sydney and Peter. Does this relationship touch on a kind of rush lots of us look for in our lives? Or should we be content with a summer salad and Chocolat?

With a screenplay by Neil Purvis, Robert Wade and Paul Haggis, this marked Daniel Craig’s debut as the nation’s favourite MI6 agent. 28 Apr 2022Sliding Doors (1998)00:47:16

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.

In this episode, we’re rushing to the platform to catch 1998’s frequently referenced Sliding Doors. The first film written and directed by Peter Howitt, who had become a familiar face in Britain as a result of starring in the hugely successful sitcom Bread, this movie made such an impression on popular culture that episodes of both Frasier and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt were made that riffed on it. Produced on a budget of $6 million (paltry in comparison to Notting Hill’s $45 million that came the following year), the character of Helen remains one of Gwyneth Paltrow’s most famous roles. Tonight we’ll be helping our protagonist confront her boyfriend Gerry, played by John Lynch, and lover James, played by John Hannah. Our four chief weapons are fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency and an almost fanatical devotion to Gwyneth Paltrow’s pixie haircut.
