18 Oct 2022Vows & Bowwows: Dogs in Weddings | Dog Edition #6800:37:34
During the COVID-19 lockdown, 1 in 5 households welcomed a new cat or dog. That’s about 23 million American homes with a new family member. You could call it a pet boom. And just like the baby boom of the post-war era or the recent millennial baby boom, it created something of an opportunity for savvy business types. Once adopted, dogs quickly establish themselves as an integral family member. Doing something special without them starts to feel … icky. Especially a little thing called “having a wedding.” As the lockdowns ended, and people started planning weddings again, they couldn’t imagine leaving their dogs out of the festivities. How could they? Their dogs were, well … family! Couples started inviting their dogs to be Best Man, Maid of Honor, Ring Bearer, and Flower Dog. Why not? Their unconditional love represents the central purpose of the marriage ceremony. Today we’re talking to the business owners who decided to support these enterprising dog lovers in their efforts to center their dogs on their Big Day. There’s the artist who crafts tuxedo harnesses suitable for walking mom and dad down the aisle. And the couple who hired their dog to be their wedding videographer. The florist who helps advise about the most dog-friendly flowers … and the ultimate dog sitter/walker company that ensures your dog appears on time for the ceremony and goes back home for the big party. This is a wedding trend we can officially get behind. 13 Dec 2022Dogs In Folklore | Dog Edition #7600:33:01
Some say humans learns best through story, and when you look at the history of dogs in folklore, you see plenty of evidence. One story about one single dog can influence the way humans feel about dogs – or that type of dog – for years, decades, centuries, even millenia. For thousands of years, seeing seeing a black dog was a good sign, a helpful warning from the spiritual world … or something quite sinister. Author D.S. Nelson calls forth some ancient stories so we moderns can see just how far we’ve come. Or have we? Dr. Stanley Coren pitches in with a thoroughly contemporary tale of a vicar’s wife who saw a ghostly dog figure and attributed a death to it. New folklore tales like this have impact on the daily life of millions of black dogs. Superstitious human folk are not lost to the mists of time, as folklorist Mark Norman reminds us. Of course, some folklore is positive, like the guardian dogs you find in tales throughout the centuries, and even in contemporary literature. Why, even Disney’s eternally popular Lady & The Tramp is based on a folk tale about a loyal Welsh hound. Folklorist Ceallaigh MacCath-Moran weighs in with insight about how folklore is created every day in unusual ways. For example, every episode of Dog Edition creates lore … so listen today, and every week, to find out what tall tails future humans will tell. Creative genius Dean Koontz talks about his muse: Trixie, his Golden Retriever. Then, we follow our noses to meet some special pooches who can sniff out Coronavirus. Dean Koontz: How dogs changed my life Dean Koontz writes international suspense bestsellers by habit ... and his massive body of work is bristling with furry faces and friendly wags. Why? Sniffing out Coronavirus Dogs have 300,000,000 olfactory receptors in their noses. Is it any wonder they know what COVID-19 smells like? As the pandemic rages, some very special dogs with very sensitive snouts may be our first line of defense. Dogs are training to sniff out COVID-19 in countries around the globe. The love of a dog and the love for a dog. Both are explored in very different ways in this episode, first by a group of scientists, then by a teenage entrepreneur. Does my dog love me? Let’s just say, the answer isn’t straight forward. Research out of Austria has pondered this very question, and further, does my dog love food more than me? And while the answer is ‘sort of’, a deep analysis of a dog’s cognitive abilities reveals it still needs you — perhaps even as much as you need it. Does my dog love me? 07 Sep 2021Can Dogs Tell Time? | Dogs In The Movies | Dog Edition #3400:24:54
On today’s show, do dogs understand time and what is behind their internal clock? Then we take time out to celebrate the canine stars of the big screen with author and film journalist Wendy Mitchell. Can dogs tell the time? If you ever get the feeling your dog knows what time it is, you’re not alone. But without telling the time in the literal sense, how do they seemingly know when it’s time to eat, time to sleep or time to play fetch? The answer isn’t straight forward, in fact there’s more than one reason at play. The top three were as follows: (1) The Kangal has the strongest bite of any breed of dog – an impressive 743 psi. This makes them particularly good at guarding livestock from predators in their native Turkey (2) The Dogue de Bordeaux has a fearsome bite strength of 556 psi - although this breed is notoriously so lazy they are unlikely to often use it. 18 Nov 2021Why is your dog’s nose a superpower? | Dog Edition #4200:22:35
Did you know, a dog could detect a teaspoon of sugar in a million gallons of water – that’s two Olympic-size swimming pools! With that kind of superpower, it is no wonder we rely on them to keep us safe every day in ways you may not even realise. Why is your dog’s nose a superpower? With up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, compared to about six million in humans and a sense of smell that is about 100,000 times more sensitive than us, there is no doubt a dog’s nose is a superpower. But why? Evolutionarily a dog’s sense of smell helps them find a mate, locate their puppies, food, and avoid predators. But for decades they have also been helping to save human lives by putting their noses on the line all in the name of duty. From detecting danger to diseases to a new frontier, which we will explore, dogs are helping to keep humans safe and save lives, all in a days’ work. Journey through this episode as we uncover the intricate make up and incredible reasons a dog holds such power on the tip of its snout. 01 Feb 2022When Dogs Talk Back | Dog Edition #4800:30:27
You know your dog understands A LOT of what you’re saying. But what if they had a way to respond to you using words? On this episode of Dog Edition, we are taking a look at the “talking” buttons that are being used to assist and enhance peoples’ communication with their dogs! This trend took the internet by storm in 2019, and has made many of us rethink our preconceived notions about the limitations on our ability to understand our dogs’ internal worlds. We will be hearing some amazing stories of people whose relationships with their dogs have been transformed by using these buttons, we will take a look at this trend through a scientific lens, and we will hear from the entrepreneur who has pioneered this new frontier with cutting-edge technology and a passion bringing enrichment to the lives of our animal friends. 06 Jul 2021How Tesla Got Its Dog Mode | Robot Guide Dogs For The Blind | Dog Edition #2500:28:17
Do dogs help humans or do humans help dogs? Well actually it is both when you are talking tech. Enter robot guide dogs for people with visual impairments and Tesla’s Dog Mode for temperature regulated pups in parked cars. Robot Guide Dogs for the Blind A blindfolded researcher gripping a leash, is led by a guide dog through a maze of obstacles. The guide dog pauses, readjusts, then pulls on the leash to guide the person to safety. But this is no ordinary guide dog. This is a robot guide dog and one that may eventually become another mobility aid for people who are blind or visually impaired. How Tesla got its Dog Mode It was the simplest of questions, answered by the simplest of answers. Yes. That was the response when Josh Atchley tweeted Elon Musk looking for a way to safely leave his dog in the car, without sparking concerns from well-meaning passers-by. The story behind this exchange is no more relevant than now, as parts of the US swelter through summer and humans and dogs stay safe during heatwaves and record high temperatures. 04 Jan 2022Dogs as Healers | Dog Edition #4600:31:42
For centuries dogs have been regarded as (hu)man’s best friend; but for many of us, sharing our lives with dogs is more than a preferred lifestyle. You may have felt it before– the sense that your dog has a massively positive impact on your overall well-being. Well, you’re not alone! There is a reason why dogs are used professionally in a therapeutic setting. Dogs are natural-born healers, capable of providing the most primal form of comfort, and helping people process trauma. If you look closely, your dog may even present you with opportunities for self-reflection and personal growth. In this episode we hear from two very different people who have witnessed the incredible healing power of dogs, and discuss the ways in which dogs can have a profound positive impact on our mental health. About Karen Storey: Karen Storey grew up in Brighton, Michigan and has been a teacher in the Brighton Area School District for the last 17 years. Karen and her family are very much engrained in the local community; her husband Scott works for Brighton Area Schools as a Behavioral Management Specialist, and their four boys all attend Brighton schools. Karen’s unique gift of looking outside the box to find solutions and support for students, staff and the community is what led her to found the nation's first school district-owned therapy dog program. Website: https://baspackofdogs.weebly.com/ About Ward Serrill: Ward’s first feature-length film, The Heart of the Game, shot over seven years, debuted at the Toronto Film Festival in 2005 and was released nationally by Miramax Films in 2006. The film won high praise across the country from the likes of Jay Leno, Ebert and Roeper (“an Oscar level piece of work”), People Magazine, USA Today, O Magazine, Rolling Stone, and others. He has created more than 90 writings and short films including Building One House with Robert Redford, and Wild America with Sissy Spacek. Ward’s new memoir, To Crack the World Open: Solitude, Alaska, and a Dog Named Woody depicts a heartfelt coming of age story about a dog as co-pilot into self-discovery. “From a remote cabin in the rugged rainforest of the Alaskan wilderness, where the untamed landscape tumbles into the ocean, a remarkable yellow Labrador retriever named Woody helped an exile from corporate America seek a fierce freedom.” Websites: https://wardserrill.com/ https://woodycreekpictures.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. 31 Jan 2023So, You Want to Be a Dog Breeder? | Dog Edition #8100:32:52
Dog breeding can be a highly controversial topic. Why bring more puppies into the world when there are still dogs needing homes in shelters? In today’s episode, we explore that perception with some thoughtful input from two of our expert guests. A lot goes into the process of becoming a responsible dog breeder: What costs are involved? How do you actually “breed” dogs? What breed should you choose? How do you even get started? We hear from one breeder in Canada who went all the way to Brazil to find exactly what she was looking for to start her line of dogs. And did you know that some dogs require artificial insemination? Do you know how much that COSTS? Once mom is through labor and the so cute pups arrive, the intensive labor for humans is just beginning. Raising them is a hands-on endeavor, and then playing lifelong matchmaker for the little darlings is not as easy as you might thing. Everyone wants a cute puppy, but who will be a great match, and who will give up on your sweet little ball of fluff and send them back to your loving arms? If you’re thinking it’s all worth it because they make a lot of money, you might be sobered by the financial reality check our guests share. To lighten the mood, we end with a jolly tale of a Christmas birth. 20 Dec 2022‘Twas the Night Before Christmas | Dog Edition #7700:21:00
Today on the show is our Christmas celebration! We are sharing the story of Jenine Stanley who was born legally blind and spent much of her life believing she did not need a guide dog. Everything changed when she moved to the city. Finding she needed help navigating the busy streets and noisy atmosphere, she found her first guide dog. While it may not have been love at first sight, it was love at first “feel.” Jenine now works to help others receive the love and assistance that only a service dog can give. To celebrate her beloved dogs, Jenine writes a new Christmas poem every year. In this special episode, we perform her version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Grab a cup of cocoa and snuggle up with your pup, because it’s about to get real cozy! 28 Dec 2021Why do we immortalize dogs in art? | Dog Edition #4500:25:46
Dogs have been painted, sculpted, photographed and made into memes and art depicting our furry best friends are celebrated on screens big and small and given pride of place in galleries, museums and homes. So what is behind this fascination that humans have with immortalizing dogs in art? Why do we immortalize dogs in art? The earliest depictions of dogs are believed to be 9,000 years ago carved into a cliff in what is now Saudi Arabia. Through the Middle Ages, the Renaissance to the modern day, humans across the globe have immortalized dogs in art across changing mediums and media and in all shapes and sizes. The hundreds of thousands of pieces that sit in galleries, museums and homes are a testament to our ongoing love and adoration of dogs, but they also tell a story, the evolution of our relationship with them and how that, and they, have changed over the years. In this episode, we journey through the ages and retrace the paw-steps of dogs of a bygone era. We explore how they have been immortalized, the stories those pieces tell, and their place in art history and in society today as a reminder of the importance humanity places on our best friends. 13 Sep 2022Lights, Camera, Bark! Hollywood Dogs | Dog Edition #6300:27:01
Dogs appear onscreen in some of the most beloved films and TV shows of all time. But what happens behind the scenes to make the magic? When a dog barks or attacks a bad guy on camera, it looks totally natural, right? It isn’t. Dogs need intense training to learn how to “act” on camera. Today’s guests, Sarah Clifford, Lindsay Hill and Mary Cummings, take us through a dog actor’s day. Training involves long hours of work, repetition, and most of all, ingenuity on behalf of the trainer. We also hear firsthand accounts of keeping dogs safe on set and some unconventional ways of breaking into the business. About Sarah Clifford Sarah Clifford is the owner and coordinator of Animal Savvy, a top-rated animal rental company for film and TV. She has notably trained dogs for roles in The Old Man, The Artist, Think Like a Dog, and dozens more. About Lindsay Hill Lindsay Hill is the official Pet Wrangler for Chewy’s promotional video and photo content. She also trains dogs for agility and other competitive events. About Mary Cummings Mary Cummings is the owner of Stone Meadow Kennel and longtime Hollywood dog trainer. 29 Jun 2021The Penguin Protectors | Tips for Dogs & Fireworks | Dog Edition #2400:30:05
The Maremma guardian dog has been guarding livestock for centuries in the Old World ... and now protects Little Penguins on an Australian island. And as America prepares for the 245th Fourth of July celebration, we should also prepare our dogs. The Penguin Protectors The Little Penguin is the tiniest of flightless swimmers ... just a foot tall, and a beautiful fairy blue. On Middle Island, just off the coast of Australia, the local foxes terrorize the teensy birds during breeding season ... at least, they used to. From an original colony of 502 birds, by 2005 there were only 10 Little Penguins left on the island. A clever chicken farmer suggested using Maremma sheepdogs to guard the birds -- and it worked. Within a few years, the colony was growing in number in the watchful care of the large white Italian dogs. The program is so successful that they are now thinking of using it to protect bandicoots. This Old World breed has a long history of guarding flocks and loving work. No wonder we turn to them now as the perfect symbol of awareness and conservation. Tips for Dogs & Fireworks Humans have celebrated military victories with fireworks for centuries. Meanwhile, the whistles and bangs and blinding technicolor pyrotechnics have driven dogs nuts. They don't experience fun ... they suffer, and too often, run scared. The number of dogs who go missing zooms higher on occasions marked by fireworks. This weekend is the Fourth of July in the United States, and dogs will have to tolerate the intolerable. How can we help them? We talk to folks with firsthand knowledge about how to help dogs handle the "celebration." She teaches about marine ecology, marine and coastal ecosystems, and human impacts on the marine environment at Deakin University in Australia. The Middle Island Maremma Project began in 2006 when fox predation resulted in a sharp decline in the size of the colony of Little Penguins on Middle Island. The large white sheepdogs were first trained to protect the penguins some years ago, in a world first trial. Two of the dogs have been credited with saving the endangered colony, bringing it back from the brink. How do dogs know if a human is trying to deceive them and how do they react? Also, behind the scenes of a tearjerker of a dog movie, The Art of Racing in the Rain. Can your dog tell if you lie to them? Dogs as lie detectors – who’d have thought it? Humans and dogs may have different genetics, but they may be more similar than we think in how they perceive deception. A recent study shows dogs, unlike children, will literally ignore people who are lying. And that means there is no fooling our four-legged friends. 08 Jun 2021Hollywood Pet Hotel Turns Rescue Retreat | Dog Breed Pain: Perception vs Reality | Dog Edition #2100:29:09
The emotional, physical and mental toll that comes with hoarding dogs for both rescuers and ‘animal collectors’ is immense, but little is known about the complexities of the issue. Also, when it comes to pain sensitivity in dogs, are all breeds created equal? Hollywood Pet Hotel turns Rescue Retreat Animal hoarding is a complex problem encompassing public health, mental health, and animal cruelty. Words like unimaginable and disgusting may come to mind at the thought, while the people who hoard animals are often dismissed as incompetent and cruel. While little is understood about this issue, many are doing their bit to save the many dogs being hoarded across the globe. Among them is Melissa Bacelar, who transitioned her Luxury Dog Hotel Business to meet the need of large-scale rescues during the pandemic. Pain sensitivity: Are all breeds created equal? Is a Bulldog tougher than a Maltese when it comes to pain or is that just how we perceive them? That is the big question being tackled by a dream team of veterinary minds at North Caroline State University. They are investigating whether all dog breeds are created equal when it comes to pain sensitivity. While there is data to show dog owners and veterinarians believe there are differences, there are not any confirmed biological reasons for it. But the findings of this research could have ramifications for how vets potentially recognise and treat pain in our furry best friends and how dog lovers interact with different breeds.  The Hydrant Jim, Pam, and Caroline stop by the hydrant to sniff out the latest dog gossip, innuendo, @jokes, and notes. 01 Nov 2022Why are Dogs so Loyal? | Dog Edition #7000:27:21
Most of us think dogs are loyal to us humans because we provide them with creature comforts: food, shelter, belly rubs. But that’s not the full story. Loyalty is deeply ingrained into canine DNA. Close bonds with humans were a crucial part of their evolution from wolves, and it’s one of the most prevalent features of dogs today. In this episode, guests Dr. James Serpell, Professor Anne Burrows, and Amanda Matoske shed light on the science behind dog loyalty. Spoiler alert: when a human gazes into a dog’s eyes, and the dog gazes back, both species release the same hormone: oxytocin. That’s the “cuddle hormone” or “love hormone” that forms deep bonds! James and Clare also share stories of two of history’s most loyal dogs, Fido and Hachiko. About James Serpell James Serpell is professor Emeritus of Ethics and Animal Welfare at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He does research in anthrozoology and specializes in the behavior and welfare of companion animals. About Anne Burrows Anne Burrows is a biological anthropologist and professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She is an expert on the unique relationship between humans and dogs and regularly teaches a course on this subject. About Amanda Matoske Amanda Matsoke is a professional dog trainer whose work carries on the legacy of the late, great Kevin Behan, world-renowned dog trainer and best-selling author. 18 May 2021Can Music Calm an Anxious Dog | Surviving the Loss of Three Dogs in A Year | Dog Edition #1800:33:29
Humans sang before we created language, some linguists say. Is our first language the best way to communicate with dogs? Can Music Calm an Anxious Dog? Babies who fuss and cry all night are not resting well ... and neither are their parents. Heartbeat Lullabies, a hit recording from hit music producer Terry Woodford, helped. Everyone from NICU nurses to parents sent gratitude ... and then the Honolulu Zoo, animal shelters, and exhausted dog moms. Turns out, what works for babies works for animals, too. Joshua Leeds, music producer and bio-acoustics expert, joins us to explain why. Surviving the Loss of Three Dogs in A Year They say bad things happen in threes, and the year 2020 amplified that by about twenty bajillion. For Lori Levine and her family, the losses last year were in part canine: three family dogs died. Lori joins us to explain how her own history with grieving -- and a special Warren Zevon song -- helped her to cope. If you wonder how you will face your dog's death, Lori's expert advice will help … because this celebrity marketing expert has a lifetime of hard-won wisdom to share. Host Clare Mansell met one of these “career change” dogs and is happy to report that he is doing just fine as an animal ambassador, a position that is becoming more common as hotels offer comfort and accommodations to pet family members. Stewart, a Labrador retriever, had spent four years in training with Canadian Guide Dogs For The Blind before realizing he wasn’t meant to be a guide dog. After a brief job search, he landed at the Chateau Laurier, Ottawa's 5-star hotel, and settled for a new life of leisure greeting guests and playing fetch in the elegant hallways. Clare visits Stewart as he works … and he shows her all his favorite spots, including a few that are technically off-limits. 09 Mar 2021Dognapping Epidemic | Dogs: The Ultimate Drying Machines | Why Dogs Hump00:28:20
We’re not the only ones obsessed with our dogs. Thieves, engineers, and behaviorists are, too. Dognappers Target French Bulldogs The brutal attack on Lady Gaga's dog walker during a dognapping caught our attention. Dognappings are on the rise as the pandemic stretches ... and French Bulldogs are a common target. Why? And how can we keep our dogs -- Frenchies and non-Frenchies -- safe? The founder of Short Noses Only Rescue Team (SNORT), Tara Bruno, joins us. A specialist in the needs of snufflers, she places Pugs, Frenchies, and Boston Terriers ... but her safety tips apply to any breed. Dogs: The Ultimate Drying Machine Next time your dog shakes himself, watch. What looks like an attempt to paint the walls with mud is actually a feat of engineering. Being able to shake yourself almost completely dry in 4 seconds is a survival instinct for dogs. But for scientists, it's something to emulate. David Hu, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Biology at Georgia Tech University, explains. What you'll learn in this segment has been applied to everything from dryers to cameras! What the Fluff? Why do dogs get the zoomies? Are dogs really color blind? Why do dogs hump? Haylee Bergeland, expert on the human-animal relationship, knows the answers to these and many more head-scratchers. She joins us to translate the canine behaviors that perplex into plain English. Based in Hoboken, NJ, SNORT volunteers exclusively rescue brachycephalic dogs. These short-headed breeds have specific health challenges that make them difficult to place. He studies animal movements to learn how to improve human tools. The undulations of sandfish may seem like a trivial matter, a mere pretty sight ... but in the world of engineering and physics, the way an animal moves divulges tons of information. Insects can show us how to avoid crashes. Dogs can show us how to dry clothes quickly and efficiently. By watching animals in the lab, in the rainforest, and in the home, we can make more elegant devices. Even robots take their cues from the way animals leverage physical laws! It is all about the licks. Whether it is Ben & Jerry’s doggie desserts or a human face – what is it with all that licking? 13 Jul 2021Swabdogs Put Smiles On Dials | How Important Is Naming Your Dog? | Dog Edition #2600:24:53
An image may be worth a thousand words, but in this case an image is worth a thousand smiles. How hundreds of pooches have made getting a Covid swab up the nose, more than bearable for owners and health workers. Also, matching dogs with temporary caregivers for military servicemembers on deployment. Swabdogs of Instagram Lining up for a COVID-19 swab can be unpleasant, daunting and often mundane for everyone involved, but bringing a four-legged friend along for company makes it bearable. To share the joy with others, pathology collector Tiffany White started posting photos of the pooches, some cats and even a bird, sitting in car passenger seats at drive through testing clinics in Melbourne Australia. The swabdogsofinsta account was started to keep her and her colleagues entertained, but it’s become infectious – of the good kind – and is bringing smiles to thousands around the world. 12 Jul 2022Failed Dog Adoptions: When Love Doesn’t Conquer All | Dog Edition #5800:31:00
Looking for some joy amid a global pandemic, Stephanie Nelson adopted tiny Juniper. It seemed like a perfect match, a wonderful addition to the family. But very quickly they realized the painful truth: Junipers needed more than their family could provide. Most dog lovers are afraid to share their rescues fails, fearing judgement and alienation. Some think it’s better to just power through: keep the dog and hope it will end well. But the opposite is often true. Returning the dog is desperately hard (as Stephanie knows firsthand) but sometimes, it’s the right thing to do. 31 Aug 2021Saving Dogs With Planes, Trains & Automobiles | Girls With Dogs | Dog Edition #3300:24:30
To mark international dog day, we are celebrating the tireless life-saving work so many animal lovers do across the globe, with ‘Doobert’ aka Uber for dogs and the pilot-turned-orthopaedic-surgeon-turned-dog-shelter-rescuer. Doobert: Free Uber for dogs By day Chris Roy is an IT professional and by night and weekends, he’s an avid animal rescuer, pilot and superhero who loves to dream up new ways that technology can help people help animals. Chris Roy started flying animal rescues, transporting shelter dogs from high-kill locations to places where they were more likely to be adopted. But realizing that coordinating the ground and aviation legs was not as simple as it could be, he created a system to coordinate the trips . And he named it after his cat: Doobert. 06 Dec 2022My Dog the Mayor | Dog Edition #7500:28:17
This episode is the second installment of Wag The Vote!, our dog-centric, non-partisan, on-going campaign to encourage voter participation. Dogs are the ultimate “good citizens” … and we think they want us humans to be good citizens, too. In this episode: dog mayors. (Yes, that's a thing.) Are dogs being elected to public office a sign of democratic collapse? Political hijinks to install a figurehead, a mere puppet for the masters pulling the other end of the leash? Or are they the natural end result of civically engaged communities? Today, we talk about the how and the why of successful canine campaigns for mayor. Unless it’s happened in your town, you might not realize there are quite a few animal mayors, especially in America. From the first mule candidate elected in 1938, to a town that has had animal mayors since 1998, we discuss the good, the bad, and the downright ridiculous. A very special thanks to the Tacoma Library in Washington state for helping us track down the clippings of Boston Curtis' 1938 election. 17 Jan 2023Weird Dog Anatomy | Dog Edition #8000:37:13
If you take a look at your dog, it’s not always clear what its body parts are used for. Sure, eyes are for seeing, ears are for hearing––but why is a dog's nose wet? And why do some of them have floppy ears? Dogs have an extra set of front claws that don’t even touch the ground. What do those do? And as for anal glands … why in the world do they need to be expressed? In this episode, Jim and Clare shrink down to the size of a flea and take an exciting tour of your dog’s body. A panel of experts joins our hosts to make heads or tails of serrated lips, corkscrew tails, and carpal pads. Buckle up … things are getting messy. Guests Dr. Maggie Brown-Bury is a relief veterinarian and member of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Beth Turner is a veterinarian with over 20 years' experience. 03 May 2022Dogs as Medicine | Dog Edition #5300:25:48
It’s been said dogs are the ultimate healers. On today’s show, we look at some of the many ways they have helped humans … from the silly to the sublime. In our main story, we hear from Ward Serrill, a corporate businessman who found himself drawn to the Alaskan wilderness. He abandoned his suit and tie for hiking boots and a lab retriever named Woody. Woody’s love and companionship helped Ward look inwards, confront old trauma, and re-learn how to love. To hear the full interview with Ward Serrill, listen to Dogs as Therapists with Ward Serrill on our sister show, The Long Leash. We also look at old folk remedies that included dogs. What do you get when you combine beer, honey, and album graecum? You may not want to know: some old ways really are better left in the past. About Ward Serrill: Ward is a successful author, director, and producer. Among other successful endeavors, he created more than 90 short films and writings. In this episode, Ward discusses his memoir “To Crack the World Open: Solitude, Alaska, and a Dog Named Woody”. This book depicts a heartfelt coming of age story about a dog as a co-pilot into self-discovery. “From a remote cabin in the rugged rainforest of the Alaskan wilderness, where the untamed landscape tumbles into the ocean, a remarkable yellow Labrador retriever named Woody helped an exile from corporate America seek a fierce freedom.” Ward lives in Port Townsend, Washington, dances the tango, and plays harmonica. https://wardserrill.com/ https://woodycreekpictures.com/ Check out Dog Podcast Network for other dog-adjacent shows. 27 Sep 2022The Queen’s Corgis: An 89-Year Love Affair | Dog Edition #6500:34:15
Queen Elizabeth II is known for her love of corgis, which began when she was gifted one in 1933 when she was very much a child. Over the next 89 years, her corgis were constant companions, and the breed became something of a mascot for her reign. We say that dog lovers are a breed apart, and we are proud that Britain’s longest reigning monarch was one of our most regal pack members. Today, we look back at her royal canine dynasty. What makes corgis suited for palace life ... and did the Queen save a dying breed? Even though we can't quite understand how this is possible, we concede that not all the members of the royal family had a good relationship with the monarch’s dogs. So, we also examine whether the Queen’s husband loved -- or merely tolerated – these short-legged cattle dogs. Another question: was the Duchess of Sussex welcomed by the Queen’s favorite pups? We also examine the role corgis played in Princess Elizabeth’s childhood and how she drew on their steady, loving presence for comfort throughout her epic reign. Episode Links British Kennel Club: https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/ If you’d like to pay your respects to the Queen by supporting a rescue that works with Corgis or you are interested in fostering or adopting, here are a few suggestions: Queen’s Best Stumpy Dog Rescue in California, USA Welsh Corgi Rescue in the UK Southeast Corgi Rescue in the USA, Finding homes for Corgis in North & South Carolina and Georgia The Cardigan Welsh Corgi National Rescue Trust in the USA About Caroline Perry Caroline is an author, journalist, and producer who was born in Britain but currently resides in Southern California. 14 Jun 2022Sniffing Out Truffles and Other Treasures | Dog Edition #5600:28:29
We all know dog noses are a superpower. With them, they sniff out all kinds of treasures; from delicious truffles nestled underground to human feces leaking into protected waters. Dogs' sense of smell is trumped only by bears, elephants, and cats. Come explore the many ways dogs put their spectacular sniffers to use. Truffles are a delicacy prized by chefs and foodies around the world, but these finicky fungi are hard to find. It helps to have a family of Lagotto Romagnolo, or truffle hunting dogs, to do the dirty work. The Angerer Family runs a truffle orchard in Northern California that employs Lagotto Romagnolos to hunt for these elusive and valuable “fairy apples”. Later in the show, learn more about canine olfaction as Jim and Clare share fun finds of pups using their Jacobson’s organ. Stories like that of Ammo, the Ukrainian mine sniffing Jack Russel Terrier, who shows that you don’t have to be a big dog, to be a good dog. The Alexander Valley Truffle Company Angerer Family Farms was started as a vehicle to diversify a connection to Sonoma County. For several years, as the family waited for their hazelnut trees, inoculated with the coveted French winter black truffle spores known as Tuber Melanosporum, to grow, they grew a variety of tomatoes and fruits which they sold to local markets. 20 Apr 2021A Dog’s Story of Survival | We Don’t Deserve Dogs | A Dog Eases the Pain of Divorce | Dog Edition #1400:36:59
If dogs represent the best of human qualities … and we assert they do … how, and when, do we need to become more human? A Dog’s Story of Survival For years Frankie lived on a hill above a suburban elementary school. All by himself, he survived by garbage picking after the last lunch bell rang. His scrounging paid off, but neighbors in the San Francisco suburb were worried about Frankie’s health. He evaded their attempts to catch him for a week, but eventually, was captured. At his veterinary appointment, the doctor found something that pointed to a ghastly past … one that made his life on the hill look pastoral by comparison. We Don’t Deserve Dogs Matthew Salleh and Rose Tucker are documentary filmmakers who like to form hypotheses and then test them on film. Their latest is We Don’t Deserve Dogs … and they offer as proof a series of snapshots and portraits from around the globe. We visit several different cultures and through their lens inhabit new beliefs and attitudes about the human-dog bond. Former child soldiers in Uganda cope with PTSD with the help of adopted dogs. A Pakistani woman invites a stray dog home and is shunned by her neighbors. A dog in Lima, Peru is celebrated with a lavish birthday party. A Dog Eases the Pain of Divorce Donna Dees was in the throes of planning the Million Mom March when her husband asked for a divorce. The timing could not have been worse … especially for their two young daughters. Hoping to soften the blow, the couple decided to give their girls a puppy along with the bad news. Little Daisy’s arrival distracted everyone from the divorce drama by forcing everyone to make adjustments and achieve balance. In their case, getting a dog was a puptastic solution to an age-old problem. The Hydrant Pam and Jim stop by the hydrant to sniff out the latest dog gossip, innuendo, jokes, and notes. This week, Busch wants your dog to be their Dog Brew Influencer. Also, it turns out Democrats and Republicans on the Hill have always agreed on one thing, after all. About A Dog’s Story of Survival Frankie is living his best life at home in Northern California. About Matthew Salleh and Rose Tucker Matthew Salleh and Rose Tucker are an Australian born, Brooklyn based documentary filmmaking duo. Their new documentary film, We Don't Deserve Dogs, is out now. We Don't Deserve Dogs is a contemplative odyssey across our planet, looking at the simple and extraordinary ways that dogs influence our daily lives. Former child soldiers in Uganda. The local pub in a Scottish town. A dog walker on the streets of Istanbul. A kaleidoscope of unconventional portraits from fascinating locations. Her 2004 memoir and guidebook called “Looking for a Few Good Moms: How One Mom Rallied a Million Others Against the Gun Lobby” earned her the “Chutzpah Award” from Oprah. The book was also cited by The Atlantic in 2008 as one of the best books on female leadership. 14 Dec 2021Who gets the dog if we split? | Dog Edition #4400:18:49
It is the last step after a long, protracted unhappy few months. Everything collected as a couple over a lifetime is divided up as one becomes two and they go their separate ways. But what about the dog? How is that going to work and how do you keep the dog’s best interest a priority? Who gets the dog if we split? At a time when dog ownership is growing and the way people see dogs in a family setting is getting more complex, so too is the need to consider dogs during divorce. Legal disputes are on the rise over who will get the dog, and with dogs considered chattels, like furniture, in most jurisdictions, stories are rife of couples fighting in court, sometimes just to spite their ex-partner. While some states in the US and in other parts of the world are changing the law so judges have leeway to consider the best interests of pets during a divorce, like they do children, it is not across the board. But an emerging industry of mediators and Petnups has developed, to help couples negotiate who will get the dog. Pet custody specialist Karis Nafte is a mediator who helps people decide the best way forward for their dog and in this episode, she walks us through all the ins and outs of what to know for your dog, before, during and after a split. About Karis Nafte, Pet Custody Specialist Originally from the USA, Karis started working with dogs professionally in 1996. She has hugely varied background in animal work; puppy training, doggy daycare, obedience, behavior problems, dog sports, aggressive dogs, shelter work, and on set movie training with a variety of animal species. After recognizing the need for ‘dog centered mediation’ during divorce, Karis became an internationally accredited family mediator. After 26 years of experience and working with thousands of dogs, she combines her wealth of knowledge animal behavior with mediation to help her clients make the best decision for their dog’s long-term wellbeing during divorce. Her goal is to help her clients see the dogs not as weapons or leverage against their ex, nor as human children, but as the individuals they are with their own needs. She collaborates with mediators and attorneys worldwide as well as offering regular webinars to educate divorce professionals about pets and divorce. In 2005 Karis moved to South Africa on a vacation, fell in love with the country, and decided to stay put. She lives there with her husband, daughter, 3 cats and 4 dogs. Known for her humane and effective training and behavior solutions, Karis is a nationally known and well-respected dog behavior consultant, regularly appearing on TV and radio in South Africa. She is a judge for the South African Dog Agility Association, and a licensed animal wrangler for the film industry. 17 Aug 2021Your Dog's Poo Can Track You! | Why Dogs Sleep On Their Back | Dog Edition #3100:24:54
In a case of CSI Israel, how one council plans to clean up its sidewalks from wayward poop. The truth behind why dogs sleep on their backs and why our furry friends are the ultimate drying machines. How dog poo could land dog owners in the proverbial! Almost every suburb in every city around the world has the same problem. Recalcitrant dog owners who don’t pick up after their pups. But an Israeli city council is making moves to change that, with plans to add every pet dog’s DNA to a database, so abandoned poo can be tested and owners traced and fined. It might be harsh, but no doubt there will be dog owners AND non-dog owners who would support it. Are you one? Israeli Council introduces DNA database to track owners not picking up after dogs Belly up, paws out: What’s with that position? Ever wondered why your pooch lays on their back, paws in the air, belly exposed? While it is cute and looks like they want a tummy rub (both of which are true), there are some very solid reasons as to why they do it. We paw over the paws up position and find out what is really going on. Why dogs sleep on their back Dogs: The Ultimate Drying Machine Next time your dog shakes himself, watch. The undulations of sandfish may seem like a trivial matter, a mere pretty sight, but in the world of engineering and physics, the way an animal moves divulges tons of information. Insects can show us how to avoid crashes. Dogs can show us how to dry clothes quickly and efficiently. By watching animals in the lab, in the rainforest, and in the home, we can make more elegant devices. Even robots take their cues from the way animals leverage physical laws! 11 Apr 2023Dogs On Wheels | Dog Edition #9100:25:26
Sixty years ago, medical trail blazer and veterinary orthopedic surgeon Lincoln Parkes built the first “dog cart” for his surgical patients. They could wheel themselves about while they recovered from surgery and maintain their strength. Since then K9 Carts, the business born of Dr. Parkes’ simple contraption, has kept millions of dogs mobile from Florida to Nepal. Dogs use wheelchairs to recover from surgery, but also during recovery or illness. Their humans, some of whom join us for today’s show, have adaptations to make, but those are well worth it to care for their dogs with disabilities. 19 Oct 2021Would You Clone Your Dog? | Dog Edition #4000:27:55
The popularity of pet cloning has grown in recent years, as the technology becomes more accessible and cost comes down, but the practice remains ethically controversial and many who chose to clone, can face a backlash. Would you clone your dog? Cloning was once reserved for livestock, but it’s popularity and accessibility has grown among dog and cat owners. But the practice remains controversial, and some say unethical. When Dolly the Sheep was cloned in 1996, she became the first mammal to be cloned from an adult somatic cell, using the process of nuclear transfer. It was a major turning point in science.  But dogs were much harder to clone because of the differences in the canine reproductive process.  So, when Snuppy, the Afghan Hound puppy, was successfully born in 2005 and named Time Magazine’s Invention of the Year, it was clear this was the start of something big. Now ViaGen Pets and Equine in Texas is among a limited number of companies worldwide able to clone dogs, cats and horses for pet owners. While detractors disagree with cloning for a range of reasons, those who have done it, including Barbra Streisand, are thrilled with the result and are delighted to have a piece of their beloved dog who provided the cells to make the clone possible. In this episode, we take a deep dive into the world of cloning to understand why people choose to clone, and why those against it call it the canine version of A Handmaid’s Tale.   About Melain Rodriguez, ViaGen Pets Melain has been a member of the ViaGen Pets and Equine team since 2008, having started as a Cell Culture Associate. Since 2009 she has served as the Client Service Manager. Melain received her B.S. in Animal Science from the University of Arkansas. Indie Game Developer and Award-Winning Narrative Director, Xalavier Nelson Jr., once identified as a cat person … but became a dog person by creating a video game that deals in absurdity. The Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs asks the question “what happens if you and your loved one are the only humans left … and you are separated by galaxies … and what if dogs are the ones running the alien airport you must use to reunite?” Using unabashedly joyful stock photo dogs in his game ended up changing his view on the species. Now he now has a real-life dog – something that wouldn’t have happened without the game. To show how lovable and happy these dogs are, every year the shelter El Campito hosts a Disabled Dog Parade. Our hosts also discuss the poor conditions of some of the underfunded and overcrowded dog shelters in the country and how police carry out raids on backyard breeders. Many of the rescued dogs, like the 97 Doxens featured in this episode, get sent to the shelter for rehabilitation. El Campito knows that saving dogs is only half the job. To improve conditions for dogs across Argentina they also need to educate the public. About Guests Sergio Moragues: @elcampito Head of Institutional Relations at El Campito. 29 Nov 2022Understanding the Cost of Vet Care | Dog Edition #7400:36:02
The cost of pet care has skyrocketed in the last ten years, and no, it's not just inflation. We’ve demanded better medical care for our non-human family members … and the industry has responded. When vets are asked to do more than “give a shot” … a vaccine, antibiotic, or steroid … the medical standards rise. And so do costs. State-of-the-art equipment costs money, as do overhead and labor. Good medicine costs good money, it turns out. Today, we do a deep dive into the inner workings of the veterinary medical industry and its complex economics. We explore the heavy impact the pandemic has had on veterinarians and their clinics. Why are so many mom-n-pop practices selling to corporate networks? Why have so many veterinarians and veterinary technicians left the field, even as demand rises? Is pet insurance a good option, or is it only adding complexity to an already-tangled situation? Historical inefficiencies must be set aside to modernize the industry … are there innovations coming that will help veterinarians help more dogs with even better medicine? 08 Nov 2022From the Titanic to Queen Mary 2: Transatlantic Dogs | Dog Edition #7100:32:47
Ocean liners, the majestic hotels of the sea, have never been built just for humans. Since their invention in 1840, they have accommodated many other species. In the early days, the animals who voyaged were fresh food for human passengers, so they didn’t quite complete the crossing. But that changed around the turn of the century, when passengers started asking to bring their pets on the trip. Shipping operators figured out how to let companion animals make themselves at home at sea. The most memorable ocean liner, the Titanic, was perhaps the most infamous of the ships to accommodate pets. She left Southampton for her maiden voyage with over 2000 passengers and crew … and twelve dogs on board. The dogs lived in luxury for a few days … until the ship hit the iceberg. What happened to the dogs? Ian Murphy at Liverpool’s Maritime Museum and Janette McCutcheon, author of several books about ocean liners, tell us about each … including an incredible tale of owner loyalty. Make sure you have your handkerchief in hand! By the 1930’s, ships were attracting movie stars, businesspeople, and other wealthy and glamorous passengers. And yes, they wanted their animals with them on the crossing. Who were the crew members tasked with looking after the dogs? Today only one ocean liner is left in service: the Queen Mary 2. Perhaps it’s the law of supply and demand that explains why the wait list for kenneled passengers is two years … but is it waning supply, or increasing demand? Humans choose to cross on Queen Mary 2 for a variety of reasons, from cost savings to phobia avoidance to health concerns. We speak to passengers who’ve made the trip and report how their dogs liked being on ship in a confined space with a strict diet. Was it a floating spa, or something … else? 25 Oct 2022Hope’s Story: An 8,000-Mile Odyssey | Dog Edition #6900:35:49
When the pandemic ground the world to a halt, Emma was studying in France, an ocean and a continent away from her home. Returning to Oregon to be closer to her family, she did what many other Americans did that year: adopt a puppy. Hope was a rescue from Texas: a sweet, traumatized Pitbull. Despite the pandemic restrictions’ and wildfire season’s best efforts, Emma and Hope formed a quick, intense bond. Hope turned out to be Emma’s great love, and so she never considered leaving her behind when she was offered a place in Glasgow to continue her studies. But Hope was terribly afraid of loud noises, and would never get on a plane. What to do? Perhaps a trip on the Queen Mary 2 was in order. It’s the only ship that carries animals across the Atlantic. But, wait: it turns out that Hope’s breed is banned in the UK! How was this girl going to get this dog into that country? Emma turned to her mother, Lucy, for help, and the two of them planned a truly epic itinerary. Today we hear their story, and talk to Dr Sam Gaines of the RSPCA about the Dangerous Dogs Act, which has prohibited Pitbull ownership in the UK since 1991. 31 May 2022The Lost Dogs of War in Ukraine | Dog Edition #5500:30:13
On February 24th of this year, Russia invaded Ukraine. The United Nations swiftly predicted the war would create the worst refugee crisis in Europe since WWII, and they were proven correct. Millions of people have been displaced, and among them are pet owners faced with a horrific dilemma: what to do with their animals? Bring them along on an uncertain journey? Leave them behind? Many didn’t have a choice. Photos from border crossings around Ukraine show many brought their dogs with them. But then what happened? On today’s show, we look at the journey these people and their pets made as the war unfolded. We speak with some of the people who helped along the way. Among the many challenges faced by refugees, rabies vaccinations proved to be one of the biggest obstacles to overcome. Without proof of current rabies vaccination, dogs had to be left behind at the border. For others, fleeing with their pets simply wasn’t an option. We also hear about those who stayed behind, and struggled to care for beloved pets in a war zone. 15 Mar 2022Conservation Canines | Dog Edition #5100:29:37
The world around us is constantly changing, and not always for the better. It is undeniable that humans have a stressful impact on wildlife. But the good news is, there are conservation pups working hard to save our environment, one species at a time. Today we speak with Heather Reich, a Game Biologist with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, and she shares with us how her Karelian bear dogs are chasing black bears in order to protect them. Black bears in the Sierra Nevada Mountains often make their way into populated areas that are abundant with easy meals; fruit trees, houses full of sweets, and garbage cans free for the taking. This is dangerous because these bears become comfortable around people and spend less time in their natural and safer environment. This is where Heather’s bear dogs come in. Once a bear is caught acting naughty within city limits multiple times, it is tranquilized and relocated to a less human populated area. Then, the bear dogs haze and harass the freshly released bears to create a negative association with people. But this is not only happening in Nevada. Nils Pedersen is the Director of the Wind River Bear Institute (WRBI) in Alaska, where he breeds and trains Karelians to do conservation work around the globe. Some of his dogs have even found their way to Japan. Picchio is a Wildlife Research Center in Japan that uses Karelian bear dogs to enable peaceful coexistence between people and the Asiatic bears that live in the forest. Junpei Tanaka tells us about his two Karelians who work as wildlife ambassadors to local communities. Lastly, we will hear from Kyoko Johnson, who is the founder and lead K9 trainer at Conservation Dogs of Hawaii. Her conservation canines detect invasive species like devil weed and coqui frogs, to help conserve the delicate flora and fauna of Hawaii. Photo Credit: John Axtell, taken of Heather’s Karelian bear dogs in Nevada Heather Reich Heather Reich is a Game Biologist with the Nevada Department of Wildlife and has 5 Karelian bear dogs. Using Karelians, Heather works to mediate human and bear interactions in the Sierra Nevada Mountains as a method of black bear conservation. Her first two Karelians, Sputnik and Orca, are now retired at 13 years old and are living the life of luxury with Heather and husband Derek. The rest of her pack are active canine conservators. Nils Pedersen Nils Pedersen is the Director of the Wind River Bear Institute (WRBI) in Alaska. He began working with the WRBI in 2011 as the trainer and handler of the Karelian bear dog “Soledad”. Together they have worked to address human-bear conflict issues with all three species of North American bear: brown, black, and polar bear. Nils completed a M.Sc. degree in Wildlife Biology and Conservation from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 2019. You can support the Wind River Bear Institute at https://beardogs.org/donate/ Junpei Tanaka Junpei Tanaka 純平田中 is the leader of the bear team at Picchio’s Wildlife Research Center and has been working there for over 20 years. Junpei has two Karelians, Tama and Rela. Tama means “bullet” in Japanese, was named after Picchio’s first bear dog from the Wind River Bear Institute. Rela means “wind” in the Ainu (indigenous peoples of northern Japan) language, and her name was a tribute to Wind River Bear Institute for first establishing the use of bear dogs as a method of coexistence. Dogs and military servicemembers put loyalty first, so this week, we explore how to repay them. Dogs on Deployment matches pets with caregivers for overseas servicemembers. Then, the original Dog Whisperer trains us humans with patience and kindness. Alisa Johnson, Founder of Dogs on Deployment Alisa Johnson has a novel way for every American who loves animals to serve their country. Her nonprofit, Dogs on Deployment, places pets in temporary care for servicemembers. The KC-130J transport pilot who earned the rank of Captain has helped more than 2,000 pets in need. Her story of service to country and dog -- and the challenges of starting a nonprofit -- is novel and inspiring. Paul Owens, The Original Dog Whisperer One of the first Paul Owens teaches a new client is how to breathe, because 99% of dog training is human training. His positive, force-free techniques earned him the title "Dog Whisperer" long ago. He joins us to talk about how and why his strategies work ... and Pam tries out his recommendations with her dog, Pepper, in the studio. 18 Jan 2022Betty White - An Appreciation | Dog Edition #4700:33:43
Who didn’t love Betty White? No one, that’s who. We all loved Betty White. In this special episode, we remember the legendary entertainer with two special guests who have experienced her loyalty, kindness, and lovingness first-hand. Betty White Probably Wouldn’t Mind Our Comparing Her to a Really Good Dog If you’ve been alive for the last 60+ years, you’ve probably been entertained by Betty White. She was one of the hardest-working folks in show business, star of stage, both big and little screens, author … there wasn’t any side of show biz she didn’t know inside out. She was also a massive animal lover. The list of animal lives she touched both literally and figuratively is too long to list, but there is no doubt that she specifically adored dogs. We speak with Christine Benninger, CEO and president of Guide Dogs for the Blind, about Betty’s tireless efforts on behalf of their organization. Along the way, she spills the tea on how dogs who went to live with her were, er, a little spoiled. We also speak with Marc Liepis, a publicist, writer, and producer who produced Betty White for five separate appearances on Jimmy Fallon’s late night show. His memories of how kind and open-minded Betty White was are insightful, and funny. She even used a joke he pitched her you can see on YouTube https://youtu.be/Fm75HpZstNw?t=167. His must-read article about Betty White is on Medium: https://mrliepis.medium.com/betty-white-touched-me-it-was-a-thrill-9741430e55d0 Rest in Peace, Betty White. We’re sure you have lots of people with and without fur meeting you on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. Thank you for everything – for the love, and for the laughs. About Christine Benninger, Guide Dogs for the Blind Christine Benninger is CEO and president of Guide Dogs for the Blind, the largest guide dog school in North America. Under Chris’ leadership, Guide Dogs for the Blind has expanded its program offerings to include Orientation and Mobility training for individuals with insufficient skills to qualify for guide dog training, a companion dog program for visually-impaired children and advocacy in support of GDB’s visually-impaired communities. 06 Sep 2022Dogs Recovering Precious Remains | Dog Edition #6200:36:07
Huge wildfires are devastating in every way possible. Forests are burned down, and the wildlife that lives there does, too. Human lives are lost, and homes are, too.  And for some, the tragedy is compounded by the need for quick escape. When you’re fleeing for your life you may not have time to pack a change of clothes and grab your important documents, let alone box up your most precious possessions. Fire survivors have much to mourn, but one of the most acute losses, many say, is leaving the cremains of their loved ones behind. Who would ever imagine that we could find ashes among heaps of ashes? Canine forensic specialists, that’s who!  Dogs who are trained to find human remains, it turns out, can find human cremains, too. Alex DeGeorgey from Alta Heritage Foundation and Lynne Engelbert, from the Institute of Canine Forensics (along with her border collie Piper) share how the dogs scent can recover the cremains, and what kind of training is involved.  James and Clare talk to the experts about this seemingly insurmountable process. 25 May 2021Dog Influencers | Sniffing Out Opportunity As A Petpreneur | Dog Edition #1900:31:58
How many of us dream about having a dog-friendly workplace where every day is bring-your-dog-to-work day? Social media and the rise of niche pet businesses is making that dream a reality for many. Pet Influencers Your dog might have what it takes to be a social media star. The real question is, do you? Creating and running a pet influencer account is a time-consuming endeavor but the payout and chance to work with your dog may be worth it. And like many human celebrities, having a talent agent might help. For this segment we travel to Australia to meet some Insta-famous Brussels Griffon pooches.  Petpreneurs If you’re ready to embark on a new business venture, why not match your love of dogs with that great skill or that great idea? Do you bake? Maybe you could try making gourmet dog treats. Perhaps you can sew. Canine couture might be for you. Pet photographers, dog walkers, dog sitters, or being a social media pet influencer. There's no end to ideas for pet businesses, especially since the boom in pandemic puppy adoptions. Our guests today share the joys of owning and operating a pet business. But this is also a cautionary tale – being a petpreneur is harder than it seems. The Hydrant Jim, Pam, and Caroline stop by the hydrant to sniff out the latest dog gossip, innuendo, @jokes, and notes.  Susanne Nicholls Being Insta-famous was not on Susanne Nicholls radar when she posted that first snap of a frowning Squid, her Brussels Griffon, when he was just a few months old. The Adelaide ‘dog mum’ started the Instagram page to share photos with family in the UK, but fast-forward four years and ‘Squid the Griff’ is one of the hottest things on four legs. Together with younger brother Pretzel (also a Brussels Griffon) the pair have almost 400,000 followers, their own calendar, a range of merchandise, brand deals and are sought after for cameo photos. Susanne says while being a pet influencer does earn her some extra money, which goes towards good food and treats for the boys, it isn’t enough for her to give her up full time job. But she says, the page is definitely less about influence and more about making people and her pooches happy. https://www.instagram.com/squidthegriff/?hl=en Loni Edwards After graduating from Harvard Law School and a brief passage in the legal world, Loni Edwards moved to NYC and got an adorable French Bulldog named Chloe, who’s smile and photogenic personality quickly drew a large following from around the world and she became one of the first pet influencers.
