20 May 2022Creating Zero Waste Products for Students on College Campuses - Greg "G.L." Genco, Founder and CEO // Generation Conscious00:22:32

In episode 143 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Greg "G.L." Genco, Founder and CEO at Generation Conscious, on creating zero waste products for students on college campuses.

G.L. grew up near a waste transfer station in Jamaica, Queens, NYC before moving to Long Island with his Trinidadian-Italian family. Seeing the health impacts of the waste station on his community motivated him to found Generation Conscious in order to tackle climate injustice, eliminate plastic waste, and address eco-classism. He was further moved to take action when he found out Trinidad & Tobago was 80% at or below sea level, meaning most of his family was on track to be displaced by rising sea levels.

As a first generation college graduate (Amherst College), G.L. understands the importance of accessibility when it comes to sustainable goods. That's why Generation Conscious collaborates with university administrations to ensure the school subsidizes or finances the full cost of the hygiene refills for all low-income students.

The Generation Conscious system is built on making sustainability simple, accessible, and affordable. Because helping the environment shouldn’t be a luxury.

As a suicide/abuse survivor, Johnny Crowder spent his formative years searching for resources to help him cope with his mental health conditions, ranging from OCD and bipolar disorder to schizophrenia.  His firsthand experience with mental illness, university-level education in psychology, and contagious positivity combine to fashion a spirit of advocacy and compassion unlike any other.

He also studied Psychology at the University of Central Florida and has years of mental health advocacy work through the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

After nearly a decade of clinical treatment, volunteer peer counseling, and public advocacy, Crowder now relies on the strategies he shares through Cope Notes to live a happier, healthier life than ever before.

I have "SAVE THEM" tattooed on my knuckles. If that doesn't tell you who I am, nothing will.

For better or worse, this is how habits are formed.  But contrary to popular belief, it can take up to 254 days for a new habit to take root. Cope Notes guarantees the consistent interruptions necessary to replace old thought patterns with healthier ones.

27 Oct 2022Disrupting the World of Shipping Through Circular and 100% Bio-Degradable Pallets - Michiel Vos // Founder CocoPallet00:33:31

In Episode 153 of the Disruptors for Good podcast, Causeartist contributor, Rafael Aldon, speaks with Michiel Vos, founder CocoPallet, on developing a bio-based export pallet that is strong, circular and affordable to replace wooden pallets.

CocoPallet founder Michiel Vos started out his quest to stop wasting precious wood by developing a bio-based export pallet that is strong, circular and affordable to replace wooden pallets. This could prevent millions of trees being cut each year. After many years of hardship and continuous technical improvements, the first large scale factory is opening its doors in 2023 in the Philippines

Michiel loves a challenge , if it is in the ring, sailing to Brazil or solving pressing environmental problems. He learned early on that avoiding pain and discomfort at all costs doesn’t get you anywhere and if you think it’s worth it; just start and get it done. The diminishing forest where one of the challenges he considered that made perfectly sense to find a solution to. First alone and later with a brilliant team, he developed an alternative for wooden one-way export pallets by compressing coconut husk waste -that is often just burned - into strong, circular and affordable CocoPallets.

About CocoPallet

CocoPallet, a transport pallet pressed from only the coconut husk which is normally wasted. Circular and 100% bio-degradable. At least 25% cheaper than the millions of wooden one-way export pallets from South-East Asia we intend to replace. Preventing millions of trees and billions of coconut husks to be wasted. CocoPallet offers coconut farmers additional income, lower cost and CO2 in the supply chain and at the end the CocoPallet can be milled and used as high quality soil improver for agricultural purposes.

Day Owl is a direct-to-consumer brand that has created a backpack out of First Mile materials that the team feels will prepare everyone to take on the world.  Ian works most in landfill community assessment, sourcing strategy, understanding how to translate impact into economic value, and leveraging impact in storytelling.

He has spoken about his work at SXSW, Harvard Business School, and the United Nations. He is a 2016 Barclay’s Unreasonable Impact Fellow and currently sits on the Ocean Conservancy’s Technical Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Plastic Waste. 03 Jun 2020Robert Luo // Founder of Mi Terro00:33:31

In episode 57 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Robert Luo, founder of Mi Terro, on his biotech company that created protein fiber from milk waste that could revolutionize two of the largest industries in the world.

Robert Luo first came face to face with the gargantuan issue of dairy waste during a visit to his uncle’s dairy farm in China where he discovered buckets and buckets of spoilt milk.

He thus founded Mi Terro, a biotechnology company that reengineers leftover milk into sustainable fibers that can replace plastic in the fashion, medical and packaging industries.

Mi Terro rescues excess milk from its dairy farm partners, skims it to remove fats before dewatering it to turn the liquid into powdered milk. It is then dissolved once again and purified to remove the bacteria, or the so-called ‘bad’ casein, from expired or spoiled milk. Casein makes up 80% of milk protein.

Luo considers costs and material performance as the two key challenges for sustainable clothing brands.

Raw materials touted as more sustainable, such as bamboo or Tencel, are still more expensive to produce compared to petroleum-based fibers or cotton. In addition, production oil-based or petrochemical textiles are sweat-absorbent, long-lasting, and have a stretchiness that eco-friendly fabrics often don’t.

The responsible start-up claims to have addressed these issues by producing a fiber that’s moisture-wicking, durable, and cheaper to produce compared to organic cotton.

In Episode 159 of the Disruptors for Good podcast, we speak with George Peppou, Founder and CEO of Vow, on inventing a new category of food from animal cells and disrupting food production around the world.

Prior to founding Vow in 2019, George founded GrowLab in 2017, an Australian accelerator for agrifood tech startups. From 2015 - 2017, he was a design innovation practitioner at the UTS Design Innovation Research Center where he led the development and delivery of design innovation programs for Federal Government clients facing complex, sector-level challenges.

In-between these jobs, George also worked as a course director, lecturer, and tutor at the University of Technology Sydney where taught topics like the process and methods of inventions, as well as how to approach sector-level transformation and strategy.

Earlier in his career, he worked as an inventor for a company called Intellectual Ventures and later as a research analyst for the University of Technology Sydney.

About Vow

Vow is built on a diverse, cross-functional team of innovators, engineers, scientists, artists and most importantly, foodies! They’re reinventing food from the ground up to make it more delicious and sustainable for everyone.

Vow is a cultivated meat company working to make the food industry more progressive in environmentally sustainable ways. George and co-founder Tim Noakesmitha launched Vow in April 2019 after previously bonding over wanting to find a solution to replace animal agriculture with a more sustainable method of food production.

Vow has recently experienced tremendous company growth using state-of-the-art cultured meat technology—where new meat products are produced directly from the cells of animals instead of the animals themselves

21 Feb 2021Ryan Shearman // Co-Founder of Aether Diamonds00:39:58

In episode 91 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Ryan Shearman, co-founder of Aether Diamonds on capturing harmful CO2 from the atmosphere to create the world's first carbon-negative diamonds, alchemized from air.

Ryan Shearman is a serial entrepreneur who has spent the past decade innovating across a range of consumer and B2B verticals. In addition to his role as an operator, he advises and invests in high growth tech startups. He has made it his life's work to combat global climate change through the development and commercialization of environmentally advantaged manufacturing technologies.

In 2018, Ryan co-founded Aether, a public benefit corporation that extracts harmful CO2 from the atmosphere and transforms it into valuable raw materials and consumer products. They unveiled the world's first and only carbon-negative diamonds made 100% from air in December 2020. The company aims to extract 100 million tonnes of CO2 from the air over the next ten years.

How are carbon-negative diamonds created?

  • Atmospheric collectors pull carbon dioxide air pollution straight out of the sky. As the air is drawn in, the CO2 is captured in a special filter. The companies first-of-its-kind diamond alchemization process is set into beautiful motion.  For every 1 carat diamond, they remove 20 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere.
  • The captured CO2 is then synthesized into a usable hydrocarbon raw material perfect for growing diamonds. All other lab-grown diamonds use carbon that is sourced from fossil fuels through oil drilling and fracking. They are proud to be the world’s first diamond to use carbon from a source that isn’t from the earth.
  • The hydrocarbon raw materials are placed into powerful reactors that create the optimal environment for growing a diamond. The diamonds grow one ambitious atom at a time, as the carbon perfectly aligns into crystalline form.  All the energy used to power the growth of our creations is from clean, sustainable sources.
  • The growing process continues for 3-4 weeks until the exact moment when it’s reached peak perfection. The rough diamonds are then sent to our expert craftspeople to cut, polish, and set them into jewelry by hand.

03 Jul 2023Harnessing the Power of the Ocean to Create Sustainable Textiles - Tessa Callaghan and Aleks Gosiewski, Co-founders of Keel Labs00:24:40

In episode 194 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Tessa Callaghan and Aleks Gosiewski, Co-founders of Keel Labs on harnessing the power of the ocean to create sustainable textiles.

The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world. The production of textiles requires a significant amount of water, energy, and chemicals, and it releases harmful emissions into the environment.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement to create more sustainable textiles. One company at the forefront of this movement is Keel Labs. Keel Labs is a company that develops and produces seaweed-based textiles. Their flagship product is Kelsun™, a yarn made from the biopolymers found in kelp.

Kelp is one of the most abundant and renewable resources on the planet, and it grows rapidly. This makes it a sustainable alternative to traditional textile fibers, such as cotton and polyester.

Keel Labs - Kelsun™ Advantages Over Traditional Textile Fibers

First, it is much more environmentally friendly. The production of Kelsun™ requires less water, energy, and chemicals than the production of traditional textiles.

Second, Kelsun™ is biodegradable. This means that it will break down naturally in the environment, without leaving behind any harmful pollutants.

Third, Kelsun™ has a number of unique properties that make it ideal for use in textiles. It is soft, strong, and moisture-wicking. It is also naturally UV-resistant.

Keel Labs is committed to creating a more sustainable future for the fashion industry. They believe that Kelsun™ can help to reduce the environmental impact of textiles, and they are working to make Kelsun™ more widely available.

How Kelsun™ is Made

Kelsun™ is made from the biopolymers found in kelp. Kelp is a type of seaweed that grows rapidly in the ocean. It is a renewable resource, meaning that it can be replanted and harvested without depleting the ocean's ecosystem. To make Kelsun™, the kelp is first harvested from the ocean. It is then cleaned and processed to extract the biopolymers. The biopolymers are then spun into yarn, which can be used to make a variety of textiles.

The Benefits of Kelsun™

Kelsun™ has a number of benefits over traditional textile fibers.

The Future of Kelsun™

Keel Labs is committed to making Kelsun™ more widely available. They are working to scale up production and to develop new applications for Kelsun™. They believe that Kelsun™ has the potential to revolutionize the fashion industry and to help to create a more sustainable future.

Final thoughts.

Keel Labs is a company that is at the forefront of the sustainable textile movement. Their flagship product, Kelsun™, is a seaweed-based yarn that has a number of advantages over traditional textile fibers.

Kelsun™ is more environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and has a number of unique properties that make it ideal for use in textiles.

Keel Labs is committed to making Kelsun™ more widely available, and they believe that it has the potential to revolutionize the fashion industry.

13 Jan 2022Becoming a Food Entrepreneur in the Middle of a Conflict Zone to Address Peacekeeping Through Business - Hasan Siber // Co-founder and CEO of Colive00:38:20

In episode 122 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast I speak with Hasan Siber, Co-founder and CEO of Colive, on becoming a food entrepreneur in the middle of a conflict zone to address peacekeeping through business.

Colive was born out of a passion for quality and equality.

Hasan and Alex met in their first days at a university in the UK and discovered they were both from the same island but on different sides of a border. Their friendship grew with time for more than a decade.

When Hasan realized Cyprus could be the birthplace of the world's rarest olive oil, he knew that with Alex's help, they could not only create an amazing product but also help their island thrive.

Thus, Colive Oil was born. They bring high-quality, locally grown indigenous Cypriot olives from groves in northern and southern Cyprus to be pressed together into the rarest olive oil in the world.

In crossing the demilitarised zone dividing Cyprus, these olives create a truly and wholly Cypriot, globally unique olive oil with the social mission of bringing people together despite conflicts. Alex and Hasan are leading by example.

Colive is the first company in Cyprus for over 50 years to operate truly island-wide and directed jointly by Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Colive is the first Cyprus company to operate across the division in more than 50 years and only Cypriot olive oil brand available in the U.S. at retail - is using its high-quality extra virgin olive oil made with hand-picked olives to pursue peace on the divided Mediterranean island, bringing new meaning to food with purpose.

After the division of Cyprus into northern and southern parts in 1974 following civil unrest, war and displacement, families and friends have been divided on the island, unable to cross the border. Hasan Siber, co-founder and CEO of Colive, decided to collect the one-of-a-kind Cypriot olives from both sides of the line and combine them into one extra virgin olive oil that offered not only a unique taste, but also a unique social mission.

To help foster peace and a united Cyprus, the company has committed to donating 10% of profits from each bottle sold to organizations dedicated to that cause.

Colive works with ~15 family farms across the conflict zone to harvest its olives, and educates farmers on how to utilize sustainable and climate-friendly farming practices, including hand-picking the olives, regenerative farming and water conservation.

If you enjoy this podcast, please rate and review the show. It's a huge help. Thanks!

In episode 111 of the Disruptors for Good podcast I speak with Brandon Nicholson, Executive Director at The Hidden Genius Project, on using computer science, business, and technology to transform lives and communities for young people of color.

An Oakland native, Founding Executive Director Brandon Nicholson has always felt a deep sense of commitment to promoting equity in the public realm, particularly in the education space. Previously, he was a Senior Associate at Social Policy Research Associates (SPR), where he conducted research, evaluation, and analysis across a range of key social policy areas.

Brandon has conducted substantial research in the areas of education and youth development, with a particular focus on issues of equity and access in K-12 education for underserved populations. He has considerable experience investigating linkages among race, class, and youth development.

The Hidden Genius Project trains and mentors Black male youth in technology creation, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills to transform their lives and communities.

The Hidden Genius Project was founded in 2012 by five Black male entrepreneurs/technologists who were unnerved by the dramatic juxtaposition between the high unemployment of Black male youth and the plethora of career opportunities within the local technology sector. To address this challenge, the founders established a program to connect young Black males with the skills, mentors, and experiences that they need to become high-performing entrepreneurs and technologists in a 21st century, global economy.

STEM employment opportunities have become the fastest growing segment of jobs in the U.S, with 71 percent of which involving computing.

The Hidden Genius Project prepares Black male youth to participate in and meaningfully contribute to the 21st Century, global, tech-economy.

02 Nov 2021The Future of Sustainable Pet Food - Shannon Falconer // Co-founder and CEO of Because, Animals00:25:21

In episode 117 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast I speak with Shannon Falconer, Co-founder and CEO of Because, Animals, on the future of sustainable pet food. If you enjoy this podcast, please rate and review the show. It's a huge help. Thanks!

Shannon Falconer is a scientist with expertise in cell culture, microbiome, chemical-genetic and molecular mechanism-of-action studies. She is the co-founder of Because Animals - a start-up using science to create sustainable, humane, cultured meat-based food for dogs and cats.

Shannon and her co-founder Josh, volunteered for years at the same cat rescue in Toronto. There they helped improve the lives of homeless cats and ease the overpopulation of strays and ferals. But the problem they truly bonded over was what they were feeding those cats: overprocessed, over supplemented meats from animals that cats were not meant to eat. And more than that, factory farms, the source of the vast majority of pet food, is devastating to the climate, our environment and to the lives of farmed animals.

And so, while Shannon was working as a microbiologist at Stanford University and Josh was finishing his MBA from Indiana University, they came up with a solution to a problem they both thought a lot about: How do we feed our pets without harming other animals or the environment? The answer: Because, Animals.

About Because, Animals

Because, Animals is a startup with a big mission: To make the most sustainable and nutritious food for dogs and cats on the planet — without ever harming any animals or the environment.

By supporting Because Animals you will help bring an end to the raising of farm animals for slaughter. With fewer factory farms, we will lessen the devastating impacts of them – to our rainforests, oceans and climate. And, importantly, you'll also be aiding in the creation of safer and more nutritious food for our pets.

04 May 2023Creating an Entrepreneurial Blueprint for the Next Generation of Farmers - Azuraye Wycoff, Executive Manager of Yellow Barn Farm00:38:40

In episode 182 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, we speak with Azuraye Wycoff, Executive Manager of Yellow Barn Farm, on creating an entrepreneurial blueprint for the next generation of regenerative farmers around the world.

Azuraye is a dynamic entrepreneur and consultant who specializes in designing nature-based organizational models to empower teams and create a mycelial network of organizations. Azuraye is the Director of Operations at Drylands Agroecology Research, where she supports systems design and implementation. She ensures that information, resources, and finances flow to the appropriate place and that human systems are designed to help each person thrive in their role.

She is also the Managing Member of Stalk Market, a unique grocery store model in a shipping container, that offers produce, products, and local goods sourced within a 30-mile radius of their first hub, located at Yellow Barn Farm.

She is also the Executive Manager of Yellow Barn Farm, where she manages the development of her family's 100-acre farm from an international equestrian center into a fully regenerative farming community.

Azuraye is passionate about local economic development, circular economy, and sustainable practices in agriculture. She is a skilled communicator and leader with a natural talent for operations management, logistics management, and leadership.

About Yellow Barn Farm

Yellow Barn Farm is a beautiful example of regenerative agriculture and sustainable community building. Established in 1865, the farm was originally used as an international equestrian center with over 50 horses and 100 riders.

However, the owners of Yellow Barn Farm have since chosen to revitalize the land for low-scale, high-quality food production, community-supported agriculture, and sustainability education.

Along with Drylands Agroecology Research (DAR), Yellow Barn Farm implements and cultivates practices of regenerative farming, animal management, carbon sequestration, soil health, and dynamic/adaptable organizational structures.

The goal is to create a holistic and fully integrated farming and eco-community that builds local resilience by linking farms and communities to create sustainable food, education, and economic systems.

Yellow Barn Farm believes in the philosophy of "give first" - you must first build, seed, and nurture a garden before it gives back.

They offer services like composting, workshops, farm-to-tables, indigenous-led celebrations, and more. The farm gathers ideas from all fields to find novel and efficient solutions to create a sustainable and regenerative ecosystem.

One of the most notable projects at Yellow Barn Farm is the planting of trees. In 2021, they planted 3,500 trees in their first silvopasture with the help of 175 volunteers. They also planted a row of 400 conifers for windbreak protection. In 2023, they will be planting an additional 6,000 trees in the back 60 acres of the property for soil restoration research through Drylands Agroecology Research (DAR).

About Cambium

Cambium, a pioneering company in the field of sustainable wood utilization, is revolutionizing the way we think about urban wood waste and its potential impact on the environment. At the core of the company's mission is the transformation of fallen urban trees, which would otherwise be discarded, into high-value wood products.

This innovative approach not only prevents wood waste but also contributes to new tree planting, creating a sustainable cycle that benefits both the environment and local communities. Founded with a deep understanding of sustainable wood use and climate action, Cambium's journey began with a focus on reimagining the urban wood supply chain.

Carbon Smart Wood

Cambium Carbon's Carbon Smart Wood™ solution represents a revolutionary approach to sustainable wood utilization, playing a vital role in combating climate change and promoting sustainable practices.

This innovative material is sourced from fallen trees, which would otherwise contribute to landfill waste. By salvaging these trees, Cambium prevents the release of carbon dioxide and methane that occurs when wood decomposes in landfills.

A key feature of Carbon Smart Wood™ is its low environmental impact compared to traditional lumber production.

The process of transforming fallen trees into this sustainable wood not only reduces carbon footprint but also keeps the carbon sequestered in the wood, instead of releasing it back into the atmosphere.

This makes Carbon Smart Wood™ a strategic choice for mitigating climate impact, especially in construction and other industries where wood is heavily used. Beyond repurposing fallen trees, Cambium's approach also includes a commitment to urban reforestation. A portion of the profits from Carbon Smart Wood™ sales is allocated to planting new trees in urban areas.

This not only supports the ecosystem but also contributes to the natural process of carbon sequestration, further aiding in the battle against climate change. The adoption of Carbon Smart Wood™ sets a new standard in the wood industry, encouraging other companies to shift towards more sustainable practices.

This industry-wide change can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the construction and manufacturing sectors.

For consumers, choosing Carbon Smart Wood™ is more than a product selection; it represents a commitment to a sustainable and climate-conscious approach. Each purchase supports a movement that prioritizes the health of the planet, making every consumer a part of the solution to climate change.

10 Nov 2021The State of the Sustainable Fashion Industry - Garik Himebaugh // Founder of Eco-Stylist00:30:27

In episode 118 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast I speak with Garik Himebaugh, Founder of Eco-Stylist, on the state of the sustainable fashion industry and creating a one-of-a-kind personal styling experience for conscious consumers.

Listen to our first interview with Garik in episode #65 here.

Who wants to wear clothes made with child labor and toxic chemicals? Not you. Not us. From organic cotton oxfords to zero waste hats and sunglasses made from recycled plastic bottles, everything at Eco-Stylist is eco-friendly, socially responsible, and ethically sourced.

At Eco-Stylist all ethical and sustainable brands are first researched with Remake’s sustainable brand criteria. This framework looks at the brand’s impact on both people and the environment. Through this framework the company thoroughly researches all of the brands on the platform, measuring the brand’s environmental and social impact. Finding sustainably and ethically made clothes can be hard work, Eco-Stylist makes it easy!

We know it can be difficult to figure out if the clothes you’re buying check all the right boxes. Do the materials used to make your shirt have a negative impact on the environment? Are the people who stitched together your jeans being paid fair wages? Does this even look good on me?

But before you call it quits and opt to buy the $15 sweatshirt from the fast fashion retailer that you know isn’t likely to be providing an acceptable workspace for their underpaid employees, know that we are doing the hard work of answering these questions for you. Using Remake’s sustainable brand criteria, we take the time to thoroughly research brands before we choose to partner with them. This criterion takes into consideration a number of factors, including transparency, environmental sustainability, maker well-being, use of sustainable raw materials, and the leadership of the brand within the ethical fashion sphere. If a brand passes, we partner with them and promote their products on our website.

Eco-Stylist is convenient, ethical, and tailored to you. They host a Sustainable Brands Directory for everyone, curate stylish and sustainable clothing in an easy-to-use marketplace, and offer virtual + sustainable personal styling.

27 Jul 2021Sustainable Coolers and Natural Packaging - David Cutler // Co-founder of Fortuna Cools | Nutshell Coolers00:33:50

If you enjoy this podcast, please rate and review the show. It's a huge help. Thanks!

In episode 110 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, we speak with David Cutler, Co-founder of Fortuna Cools and Nutshell Coolers on making sustainable coolers and natural packaging out of upcycled coconut husk fiber.

David is the co-founder and CEO of Fortuna Cools, a company leading the transition from plastic foam to natural fiber packaging, reducing supply chain waste in the process. David and his colleagues developed Fortuna's Coconut Cooler with partners in Southeast Asia and launched the Nutshell Cooler to bring this same combination of sustainability and performance to the consumer cooler market.

Prior to Fortuna, David was a database management consultant in Asia and policy analyst in Washington DC. David studied politics at Middlebury College and received a Master’s in Environmental Policy from Stanford University.

The Fortuna Cools Mission

Fortuna Cools is replacing plastic foam insulation once and for all. In its place, the company uses coconut fiber, a leftover waste product of the enormous coconut meat industry. Nine billion coconut husks are burned as garbage every year in the Philippines alone. Fortuna’s coconut fiber insulation avoids CO2 emissions from incineration and provides extra income for impoverished coconut farmers. Fortuna partners with rural communities in the Philippines to build coolers that last years. Impact is built into every Fortuna Cooler we sell.

About the Nutshell Cooler

The Nutshell Cooler is Fortuna's first consumer product. The Modern Sustainable Cooler. Sustainable but sturdy, spacious but foldable: Nutshell is a thoughtfully-designed cooler for lovers of the outdoors. Nutshell is insulated with fiber from upcycled coconut husks which would otherwise have been burned as waste.

24 May 2022The Future of Responsibly Made Denim and Ethical Manufacturing - Adam Taubenfligel // Co-founder of Triarchy00:42:40

In episode 144 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Adam Taubenfligel, Co-founder of Triarchy on the future of responsibly made denim and ethical manufacturing.

Adam is an author and co-founder, Creative Director and Sustainability Steward for the fully sustainable fashion brand, Triarchy. In his day job, Adam is innovating fabric technology, traceability and reusability that minimize waste and maintain authenticity, relentlessly reducing waste at every possible juncture. However, the bigger picture shows us a disruptive founder on his journey to discover how his identity as an author, sustainability steward, designer, LGBTQIA+ human in this space is all intersecting at this moment and leading to what's next.

Triarchy was founded by Mark, Adam and Ania Taubenfligel in 2011. Since its inception, Triarchy has become known for its sustainable and ethical practices, as well as its trend-setting design. The brand also uses eco-friendly processes to manufacture its jeans, such as using ozone technology to minimize water waste. In addition to its environmental credentials, Triarchy is also committed to social responsibility.

Triarchy was initially a direct to consumer denim brand with not much but great jeans. However, as the brand continued to grow, the siblings noticed the incredible amount of water waste and chemical harm the denim manufacturing industry was having on the planet. Instead of turning a blind eye, they checked their egos and stopped production, taking their brand offline in 2016 in order to find a better way to make jeans.

Three years later, after what seemed like an endless amount of research, Triarchy was reborn as the denim brand we know and love today. Responsibly made, with ethical manufacturing in mind.

Triarchy is not just a denim brand, it is a vehicle to educate consumers on mindful consumption and the now more than even importance of less is more. With its combination of style, sustainability, and social responsibility, Triarchy is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the world of fashion.

06 Sep 2021Natural Alternatives to Leather and Plastics - Sophia Wang // Co-Founder of MycoWorks00:31:38

If you enjoy this podcast, please rate and review the show. It's a huge help. Thanks!

In episode 112 of the Disruptors for Good podcast I speak with Sophia Wang, Co-Founder of MycoWorks, on disrupting the fashion industry by creating a biomaterials company that has developed natural alternatives to leather and plastics using mushroom mycelium technology.

In 2013, with artist and inventor Phil Ross, Sophia co-founded MycoWorks, a biomaterials company that has developed natural alternatives to engineered wood, leather and plastics using mushroom mycelium technology.

Her creative practice includes choreography, performance, writing, curation and producing original dance and multimedia works. Sophia has danced for Xavier Le Roy, Tino Sehgal, Jerome Bel, Amara Tabor-Smith and Xandra Ibarra, and co-founder of the Brontez Purnell Dance Company. Since 2015, she has co-produced Heavy Breathing, a discussion and movement workshop series that has featured over 45 presenting artists working at the intersection of performance, visual arts and pedagogy.

Sophia also holds a PhD in English specializing in 20th and 21st century experimental American poetry, and a BA in English and Visual Arts.

MycoWorks create materials at the intersection of art, nature and biotechnology using mycelium, one of the earth’s most regenerative resources. The company's mission is to create a platform for the highest quality materials using Fine Mycelium™. Their first product, Reishi™ offers partners in the fashion industry an option for leather that is neither animal nor plastic, yet uncompromising in quality and aesthetic expression.

The company announced last year the closing of a $45 million Series B financing to scale up and meet demand for Reishi™, the leading natural, non-animal leather material. WTT Investment Ltd. (Taipei, Taiwan) and DCVC Bio co-led the round, with major participation from new investors Valor Equity Partners, Humboldt Fund, Gruss & Co., and others, and existing investors Novo Holdings, 8VC, SOSV, AgFunder, Wireframe Ventures, Tony Fadell, and others.

About Mushroom Mycelium

A breakthrough in materials science and biotechnology, Fine Mycelium is an advanced manufacturing platform for high performance materials in fashion and footwear. The company's proprietary technology has enabled a new class of premium, non-animal materials that are the next evolution in mycelium.

Mycelium is one of the earth’s most powerful agents of regeneration and carbon sequestration. These fine, root-like threads are grown on the byproducts of agriculture and lumber, transforming plant matter into their own biomass.

Unlike “mushroom leather,” which is compressed mycelium, MycloWorks patented Fine Mycelium technology engineers mycelium during growth to create the proprietary, interlocking cellular structures that give our material its superior strength and durability.

Exclusive to MycoWorks, the Fine Mycelium process offers the unique advantage of total control over quality and customization.

Fine Mycelium materials are custom-grown to our brand partners’ specifications for performance, aesthetic features and more. This gives brands creative control to design from the material on up, while minimizing waste and ensuring consistent quality. Actionable traceability of the Fine Mycelium process allows our experts to capture and apply data at defining moments during production, fully optimizing our products from initial growth to harvest.

Today, the team is growing in order to scale and deliver Reishi to an even broader range of partners in fashion, footwear and beyond. Together, they’re working towards a world where mycelium enables resilient, creative solutions for any industry dependent on animal and petroleum-derived products.

27 Dec 2022Ending Extreme Poverty With The Anti-Poverty Version of the Dollar - Co-founders of Glo00:41:52

In Episode 160 of the Disruptors for Good podcast, we speak with the Co-founders of Global Income Coin(Glo), on using blockchain to end extreme poverty through a fully backed stablecoin.

Glo is a nonprofit that thinks and operates like a startup.

Glo has raised a $2 million seed donation from a personal donation by Sid Sijbrandij (co-founder and CEO of GitLab Inc.). Their operational costs and employee salaries run on philanthropic donations.

With Glo, you can make a powerful impact on ending extreme poverty.

Simply by owning money in the form of Glo, you generate new money which then goes to people living in extreme poverty.

The US dollar-pegged stablecoin not only gives back to those in need but also allows you to put your money where it matters most: directly into the hands of impoverished people around the world.

How it works:

  • You send us $1000.
  • In return, we create 1000 Glo and send it to you.
  • Glo is a cryptocurrency, so we send the 1000 Glo on the blockchain and you receive it in your crypto wallet. We don't like crypto for the sake of crypto—it's just the only viable way to create a new currency.
  • We put your $1000 in the Glo reserve. Keeping it there is how we make sure your 1000 Glo stays worth $1000. Every Glo that exists is backed by one US dollar in the Glo reserve.
  • You can always convert your Glo back to regular US dollars if you need the money, so you're not losing any money in the process.
  • So how does Glo generate basic income? The trick is that we don't literally keep your $1000 sitting in a bank account. We invest a part of it in 3-month T-bills, a type of US government bond.
  • 3-month T-bills are about the least risky investment you can think of. For that reason, they are often categorized as "cash or cash equivalents".
  • Still, they generate a small interest. This varies, but our rough assumption is that the Glo reserve will return about 2.5% per year on average. That means every $1000 in the Glo reserve generates $25 per year of profit.
  • We give 100% of this profit away as basic income to people living in extreme poverty.
  • Each recipient gets $1 a day, which is often enough to lift them above the extreme poverty line.

23 Nov 2020Hugues Didier // Co-founder of PANAFRICA00:38:28

In episode 84 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Hugues Didier, Co-founder of PANAFRICA, on quitting his job to start an impact sneaker company that invites transparency, creates educational opportunities, and invests in job training across Africa.

A littele over five years ago Hugues and his co-founder Vulfran de Richoufftz decided to quit their jobs and promising careers to start something that that was both creative and impactful to society. They chose to start PANAFRICA, a company dedicated to making sneakers differently, by respecting those who make them and by taking into account social, economic and environmental impacts of their actions.

Not only do they continue to invest in innovations around its textiles and materials, as seen in their returnable and recyclable sneaker: The ARUSHA, they also invest time and energy into its workers and their futures.

In order to support the development of the workshop and to guarantee long-term employment PANAFRICA is committed to producing one collection over six months. This enables us to avoid the pitfalls of mass production over short periods and ensures every worker: on-the-job training specific to the PANAFRICA chain of production, improved working conditions (transparency and lasting contracts), a workload spaced out over a longer period of time.

Any purchase of PANAFRICA sneakers support projects for access to education and job training in Africa through the WALK FOR SCHOOL program. For each pair of sneakers you buy, PANAFRICA donates 10% of its profit to various associations.

In Episode 151 of the Disruptors for Good podcast, Causeartist contributor, Rafael Aldon, speaks with Fahad Ifaz, Co-founder and CEO of iFarmer, on his mission to democratize agricultural finance and supply chains to millions of small-scale farmers.

Fahad is an entrepreneur with a vision to create innovative, sustainable and resilient solutions for people in emerging economies.

A big believer of businesses and entrepreneurs as driving force for human development. Fahad believes as rationale human beings we don't buy or invest in "things". This is true for the poor farmers, producers, big corporations, governments and financial institutions.

Prior to founding iFarmer, Fahad worked for 10 years in the "market systems development" and ” and Private sector development space with experience in agriculture, micro-enterprise development, value chain development, policy analysis and private sector engagement across various countries in South Asia.

Prior to iFarmer, Fahad worked at the NGO, Swisscontact-Katalyst, The World Bank, CARE Australia and SPRING Accelerator.

iFarmer is an impact tech startup that has developed an innovative online platform that enables anyone in Bangladesh to easily sponsor in farming and livestock. Being a part of the iFarmer community is more than earning returns.

Food, Energy, and Water are peoples primary needs, that’s always decreasing. By 2050 world Population will reach 9.1 billion and 70% of world population will be living in urban space. In Bangladesh, there is an urban population of 30%, which is likely to increase up to 50% by 2030.

The question is who will feed this growing population? That’s why we need new ways to create scalable and efficient agriculture farming.

24 May 2021Classic Episode: James Bartle // Founder of Outland Denim00:56:18

In Episode 3 of the Disruptors for Good podcast I spoke with James Bartle, founder of Outland Denim. Outland Denim is a social enterprise creating premium denim products that help tackle the worlds human trafficking crisis. Every 30 seconds, someone is sold in the human traffic industry. Once in, it’s nearly impossible to escape.

According to a United Nations report, the most common form of human trafficking (79%) is sexual exploitation. The victims of sexual exploitation are mostly women and girls. The second most common form of human trafficking is forced labour (18%), although this number may actually be more, because forced labour is less detected and reported than trafficking for sexual exploitation. Worldwide, almost 20% of all trafficking victims are children.

Outland Denim has created an approach of zero exploitation, to help prevent young girls being drafted into sex trade, or as slave labor into the garment industry. This approach is done through a program that Outland created called The Denim Project. This program offers young girls with an interest in sewing to earn fair wages, and to learn and master the crafts of sewing and fashion.

Outland Denim began when James travelled to Asia and saw first hand how human traffickers prey on vulnerable young girls in order to service the sex industry. After learning that once a girl has been rescued and rehabilitated, sustainable career path is vital for securing her future, James created the “Denim Project”, which would enable those girls who demonstrated an interest in sewing to put their new skills to use.

19 Oct 2021How Botanical Chocolate Can Revolutionize Healthy Living - Justin Polgar // Co-Founder of YES Cacao00:49:54

If you enjoy this podcast, please rate and review the show. It's a huge help. Thanks!

In this episode of the Disruptors for Good podcast I speak with Justin Polgar, the Co-Founder of YES Cacao on why botanical chocolate can revolutionize healthy living.

Justin is an alchemical chocolate technologist, focusing his chocolate innovation toward education in the holistic health and wellness category. Justin really loves chocolate. Making chocolate with Willy Wonka style, he is an inspirational cheerleader for everyone to find their YES.

I had the amazing opportunity to sit down face to face with Justin to talk all things chocolate wellness, fair trade, and his entrepreneurial journey.

What is Botanical Chocolate?

YES Cacao coined the term botanical chocolate, but Justin will be the first to tell you he was not the first to use chocolate as a delivery system for health and wellness. Over 500 years ago, before chocolates was introduced to Europe, cacao was used ritualistically in ceremony, and as a delivery system for herbs and medicine.

Justin sees cacao as a plant medicine. Theobroma Cacao literally translates to “Food of the Gods”, and might be why humankind is so attracted to this substance. The legends and origin stories associated with Cacao transcend our known history, deep into tribal mythology and extra terrestrial arena that our culture considers taboo.

Chocolate is a vasodilator, meaning its chemical compounds expand the blood vessels. Instead of using refined sugar, processed emulsifiers, and conventional preservatives (which all penetrate the body with less-than-healthy consequences), Justin believes it's a better idea to use chocolate as a delivery system for organic herbs, teas, flowers, and superfoods.

Yes CaCao is here to help you easily adapt into a healthier lifestyle, feeding the mind, body, and spirit connection.  Botanical Chocolate is food to help you find your “YES”.

01 Jun 2020Louisa Ziane // Co-founder of Toast Ale00:42:47

In episode 56 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Louisa Ziane, Co-founder of Toast Ale on creating beer from food waste and building sustainable collaborations with breweries around the world.

With its signature beer made from surplus bread, Toast Ale is at the forefront of the fight against food waste, and the movement to make the food industry more sustainable.

“Food production is responsible for 80% of deforestation, 70% of freshwater use, 30% of greenhouse gas emissions and is the largest contributor to soil erosion and biodiversity loss. Yet one-third of food goes to waste. We’re here to change that,” shares Co-Founder and COO Louisa Ziane, who worked as a sustainability consultant before teaming up with Stuart to create Toast Ale.

In the brewing process, Toast replaces one-third of the malted barley with bread. The bread provides starches that are broken down to fermentable sugars by enzymes contained in the malt. The yeast feeds on the sugars during fermentation to create alcohol.

Malt accounts for a significant part of the beer production carbon footprint. By replacing virgin barley with surplus bread, Toast reduces the need for land and water use in its production processes, thereby mitigating carbon emissions leading to climate change.

The social enterprise uses the heel ends of loaves that can’t be made into sandwiches. They source simple white, brown or whole-meal sliced bread that has easily accessible sugars, and is widely available.

29 Nov 2022Rodney Williams // Co-Founder of SoLo Funds00:35:05

In this episode of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast I speak with Rodney Williams, Co-founder of SoLo Funds, on building a non-predatory FinTech startup for underserved communities in America.

Rodney has been recognized with numerous awards, including Ad Age’s 40 Under 40 in 2012; the Ernst & Young EDGE Award in 2013; Cannes Gold Lion award in 2015; Tech Entrepreneur of the Year by Black Enterprise, 2016; NAACP Inspiring Innovation list 2017; 25 Inspiring Entrepreneurs Under 40 by Entrepreneur Magazine 2016; Entrepreneur of the Year in Connected World Communications in the Ohio Valley Region by EY in 2017; Ebony’s Power 100 in 2018 and CNBC Disruptor 50 List in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019.

Rodney attended West Virginia University, where he earned his BBA in finance, his BA in economics, and his MS in integrated marketing communications.

Rodney also holds an MBA in finance & supply chain management from Howard University. He is a member of the 2019 Class of Henry Crown Fellows within the Aspen Global Leadership Network at the Aspen Institute.

SoLo Funds is a mobile lending exchange that connects lenders and borrowers for the purpose of providing more affordable access to loans under $1,000. SoLo was created to disinter-mediate the predatory payday lending system. Today, SoLo is one of the fastest growing fintech companies in the country.

SoLo’s story starts the way every SoLo request begins: with someone needing a hand. Co-founders Travis Holoway & Rodney Williams were noticing that family members, friends, and roommates were asking for financial help here and there, and they understood why. There weren’t any fair, reputable options for small, short-term loans.

They decided to create one by harnessing the power of community. SoLo was formed in 2018 to create a viable, non-predatory option for moments when life happens. SoLo tap's into the power of community and generosity to form an online safety net that is mutually beneficial to all of its members.

Travis and Rodney know that SoLo is needed because they needed it. Our loved ones needed it. And they know that SoLo makes a difference because nearly 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.

Today, SoLo is driven too new heights, but grounded in the same hope and mission: to build a community that enables financial autonomy for all.

15 Oct 2020Mark McTavish // CEO & Co-Founder of Pulp Culture00:38:27

In episode 76 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Mark McTavish, CEO & Co-Founder of Pulp Culture on changing our relationship with alcohol and creating the world's healthiest adult beverage.

Beverage Industry Veteran Mark McTavish (CEO & Co-Founder) and Plant-Based Performance Mogul Brendan Brazier (Co-Founder) combined their areas of expertise to create the healthiest alcohol on the planet.

These two fitness-minded foodies turned social entrepreneurs, set out to create an alcoholic beverage that uses 100% raw, fresh juice that naturally ferments over three months (thank you, mother nature). Called “wild fermentation,” the result is a zero-additive, zero-sugar, bone-dry beverage with 6 billion naturally-occurring probiotics, B vitamins, and 4.9% ABV. The final touch is blending in fermented, nutrient-dense super fruits and performance-boostings botanical adaptogens

Mark was raised in the apple growing region of southwest Ontario, he began his career in the craft beverage industry at the age of 19. Soon after earning his Bachelor of Commerce at Canada’s top beverage management school, Mark established his foothold in the marketplace by opening one of the first craft bars in Canada in 2003.

After helping to pioneer the craft beer industry in Canada, Mark followed his other passion and built a successful career in the commercial fitness business. With a focus on product design and brand development, Mark spent nearly a decade working with fitness professionals across North America. Mark’s career path came full circle when he realized his dream to craft the healthiest alcoholic beverages on the planet; a convergence of two industries that had previously seemed to be an impossible pairing.

28 Mar 2022Making Sustainable Farming Economically Superior With the Tesla of Tractors - Carlo Mondavi // Co-founder of Monarch Tractor00:40:24

In episode 135 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast I speak with Carlo Mondavi, Co-founder of Monarch Tractor, on making sustainable farming economically superior and cleaner with fully electric and autonomous tractors.

Carlo Mondavi is a 4th generation farmer & winegrower and grandson of the legendary Robert Mondavi. In addition to making wine, Carlo is co-founder & chief farming officer of Monarch Tractor founded in 2017. He is currently an active sustainable farmer and leads the delivery of the world’s smartest, fully electric, autonomous tractor which is being deployed around the world to farmers.

In 2013 he formed RAEN Winery with his brother Dante. He has also put the Monarch Tractor to work at RAEN winery. RAEN stands for “Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally,” which speaks to the core ethos of Carlo’s farming & winemaking practices: to farm at the highest level and in unison with nature. RAEN implements permaculture, biodynamic and organic.

In 2017 he started the The Monarch Challenge. The Monarch Challenge is set to enlighten, encourage and connect our communities to farm and thrive in unison with nature and give back to the delicate circle of life---Basically cleaner farming.

The challenge was inspired by the dwindling Monarch butterflies that used to be in the millions and have dramatically been reduced to thousands. The butterflies are very important to the farming ecosystem in Napa and Sonoma but impact other regions too.

The name ‘The Monarch Challenge’ comes from the fact that since Roundup’s introduction into the market in 1974, the Monarch butterfly population has declined by 90% and is currently under threat of extinction. The environmental impact goes beyond the Monarch to frogs, bees, other pollinators and even on to our human health.

In 2020 he was co-founder of Monarch Tractor leading the electrification of agriculture.

Carlo states, “The true definition of sustainable is all over the place, blurring the root meaning of what sustainable is. With that said, truly sustainable farming is leaving the soils and environment farmed as good if not better than before to allow for life and farming to continue on healthily. This means no herbicides, systemics and a basic regenerative practice to help build soil health and biodiversity on the farm. Once this balance is found on a farm there is the opportunity for a healthier farm team meaning healthier community and most importantly a better and healthier product to share and sell.”

What is the Monarch Tractor?

Monarch Tractor is making sustainable farming economically superior with the MK-V -- the world’s smartest, fully electric autonomous tractor and with a world-class leadership team that have accelerated vision to product delivery in three years.

What are the benefits of the Tractor?

Monarch’s fully electric tractor helps eliminate the 35 percent of carbon emissions developed by current diesel tractors used in agriculture farming. Monarch projections suggest its tractor can directly reduce 1% of GHG emissions, while regenerative practices enabled by Monarch can reduce 4% of GHG emissions.

Farmers today face numerous challenges including labor shortages, effects of climate change, safety concerns, increased customer scrutiny for sustainability demands, government regulations, and more. Monarch Tractor addresses these issues by combining electrification, automation, machine learning, and data analysis to enhance farmer’s existing operations, increase labor productivity and safety, and maximize yields to cut overhead costs and emissions.

Monarch Tractor has helped customers cut their carbon footprint, improve field safety, streamline farming operations, and increase their bottom lines. Monarch Tractor will be the template for all future tractors in terms of an all-electric, driver optional and actionable intelligence features.

The one thing all of the Ethnotek weavers and artisans have in common is the fact that their craft is disappearing. Every year they see less and less local demand for their fabrics due to low yield and long lead times. Traditional techniques are quickly being replaced by machines and factory labor in major cities, drastically reducing the number of jobs and industry in the regions where it is needed most. By creating new demand for these traditional handcraft practices, the brand and its customers are in a sense forging an effort to keep them alive and well and in the same villages from which they came.

The last and most important part of the mission is to spread the idea that we should all celebrate each other's differences more often. The only way culture can stay alive is if we keep it that way. Culture runs deep; from the tribes of Yunnan Province to the Subways of New York City. From the Ghats of Varanasi to the Cafes of Paris. To ensure the survival of these incredibly interesting differences we must learn about them and retell their story. This is why we see our bags as a flag. A flag that you wave which says, "I care".

Check out Ethnotek's Sourcing Roadmap: This is an article to describe Ethnotek’s internal ethical guidelines for working with artisans and is to provide suggestions to designers & business owners who are looking to practice Cultural Inclusion in their supply chain. We in no way claim to be experts in this department and are still learning, but we do have over 10 years of first-hand experience and not only does our system work well, everyone is happy and having fun in the process! Hopefully you find this helpful, enjoy!

02 Oct 2019Justin Polgar // Co-Founder of YES Cacao00:58:46

In Episode 27 of the Disruptors for Good podcast I speak with Justin Polgar, the Co-Founder of YES Cacao on why botanical chocolate can revolutionize healthy living.

Justin is an alchemical chocolate technologist, focusing his chocolate innovation toward education in the holistic health and wellness category. Justin really loves chocolate. Making chocolate with Willy Wonka style, he is an inspirational cheerleader for everyone to find their YES.

I had the amazing opportunity to sit down face to face with Justin in Honolulu to talk all things chocolate wellness, fair trade, and his entrepreneurial journey.

13 Jul 2021Alexandria Harris // President of The Andrew Goodman Foundation00:44:59

If you enjoy this podcast, please rate and review the show. It's a huge help. Thanks!

In episode 108 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, we speak with Alexandria Harris, President of The Andrew Goodman Foundation, on her mission to make young voices and votes a powerful force in democracy.

Alexandria “Alex” Harris is the President of The Andrew Goodman Foundation. In her role, she is responsible for activating the Foundation’s goals and vision through the strategic and sustainable growth of the organization. Alexandria first became passionate about voting when she was in elementary school.

She participated in many local and national campaigns, organized and registered students to vote on campus, and successfully lobbied the Georgia State Legislature to enact a law that allowed a voter to cast a provisional ballot if they believed they were entitled to vote. The law was the precursor to the Provisional Vote Law enjoyed across the United States today.

Alexandria practiced corporate law for nearly a decade. She left the law to become a social entrepreneur, opened a school, and has since helped nonprofits around the world scale. She earned a B.A. from Spelman College and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Alex typically spends her free time playing outside with her husband, two small boys, and Mini Schnauzer, Langston Hughes.

The Andrew Goodman Foundation’s mission is to make young voices and votes a powerful force in democracy by training the next generation of leaders, engaging young voters, and challenging restrictive voter suppression laws. The Foundation’s Vote Everywhere program partners with America’s colleges and universities to provide resources, visibility, and mentoring to a national network of student leaders who involve their peers in participatory democracy through long-term voter engagement, public policy, and social initiatives.

The organization is named after Andrew Goodman, a 20-year old Freedom Summer volunteer, and champion of equality and voting rights who was murdered in 1964 while registering African Americans to vote in Mississippi.

10 Oct 2021Creating Sustainable Jobs for Women Through Fashion and Empowering Them to a Life Beyond the Sex Trade - Colleen and Maggie Clines // Anchal00:48:15

If you enjoy this podcast, please rate and review the show. It's a huge help. Thanks!

In this episode of the Disruptors for Good podcast, I speak with Colleen and Maggie Clines, the Co-founder and Creative Director of Anchal. Anchal is an innovative nonprofit creating sustainable jobs for women through fashion and empowering them to a life beyond the sex trade.

With backgrounds in design, sisters Colleen and Maggie Clines lead Anchal by placing design at the center of the brands everyday practice. It all started in a design studio. Colleen Clines was taking a graduate seminar at the Rhode Island School of Design that took her on a trip to India in 2009, a trip that changed the trajectory of her life forever. While in India, Colleen was introduced to the exploitive world of the commercial sex trade and the extreme lack of opportunity for women in the community. It was in this moment she was inspired to design more than beautiful landscapes, she was determined to create positive social and environmental change using design.

While Colleen was scheming ways to collaborate with the amazing women she’d met in India, her sister Maggie was in college working on socially conscious architecture projects -- discovering creative ways to repurpose a retired uranium facility. Maggie and Colleen would trade stories on their design experiences and wonder how they could unite their passions.

After returning home, Colleen and her classmates raised $400 by selling handmade notebooks and notecards. They used the funds to purchase a sewing machine, sewing instruction, materials and a stipend for the first collective of artisans.

In 2010, Anchal officially became a 501(c)3 non-profit and we expanded the project by partnering with Vatsalya, an NGO in Ajmer, India. In 2012, Maggie joined her sister to co-lead Anchal and stitch by stitch, a global sisterhood started to grow.

Today, Anchal has trained and employed over 500 women and is an internationally recognized brand known for award-winning designs and handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces that empower exploited women living in India and Kentucky.

15 May 2023Morgan Bierschenk /// Co-founder of Geoship - Revolutionizing Homebuilding Through Innovative and Sustainable Ceramic Domes00:31:49

In episode 185 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Morgan Bierschenk, co-founder of Geoship on revolutionizing homebuilding, through innovative and sustainable ceramic domes.

In a world grappling with pressing environmental and social challenges, the need for sustainable housing solutions has never been more critical.

The escalating costs of homebuilding pose a significant challenge in today's world. Not only do construction and operation activities contribute to nearly 50% of global CO2 emissions, but they also fall victim to the destructive impacts of extreme weather events.

As our planet welcomes 3.6 billion additional inhabitants this century, the need for 2 billion new homes becomes a pressing matter.

However, this demand must be met while striving for net-zero carbon emissions. It is evident that homebuilding stands at the forefront of humanity's most crucial issues in the coming decades.

Geoship, an innovative company, has emerged as a pioneer in the field of sustainable housing, offering a groundbreaking approach to building eco-friendly and affordable homes.

Through their unique geodesic dome design, Geoship aims to revolutionize the housing industry, providing resilient and regenerative homes that are energy-efficient and resistant to changing weather conditions.

By 2026, Geoship aims to manufacture 10,000 domes per year in a 200,000 square foot factory located in Nevada City, CA. Their ultimate goal is to make the best home on Earth the most affordable home, and scale manufacturing to 1 million bioceramic domes per year by 2036!

24 Jun 2022Classic Episode: Creating a Profitable and Ethical Business Rooted in Respect for the Earth, the Farmer, and the Consumer - Dean Cycon // Founder of Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee Company00:52:03

In this episode of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, we speak with Dean Cycon, founder of Dean's Beans, on how to create a profitable and ethical business rooted in respect for the earth, the farmer, and the consumer.

Dean Cycon founded in Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee Company in 1993 after working as an environmental and indigenous rights lawyer. He set out to prove that a for-profit business could create meaningful change through ethical business practices rooted in respect for the earth, the farmer, our co-workers and the consumer.

Dean spent over a decade as an indigenous rights and environmental lawyer before bringing those skills to the coffee industry by co-founding Coffee Kids, the coffee industry’s first non-profit development organization, in 1988. Yet after designing and managing the development arm of Coffee Kids for five years, Dean decided that charity wasn’t enough – until businesses changed their fundamental operating principles there would be no meaningful impact on the lives of the farmers. He founded Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee in 1993 with the mission of using specialty coffee as a vehicle for positive social, economic and ecological change at origin.

Dean has been a Woods Hole Research Fellow, a Senior Fulbright Scholar, and a Yale Law School Visiting Fellow.

Dean’s book about social justice, culture and coffee, “Javatrekker: Dispatches from the World of Fair Trade Coffee” was awarded the Gold Medal as Best Travel Essay book of 2008 by the Independent Publishers Association, and has been published in English, Korean and Chinese.

The mission of Dean's Beans is to use high quality specialty coffee as a vehicle for progressive change throughout the coffeelands of Asia, Africa and the Americas. This is achieved through:

The company has been directly engaged in community development and activism for over twenty-five years now.

All of the high-quality specialty coffees are certified Organic, Fair Trade, and Kosher, and are roasted fresh to order in small batches at the companies beanery in Orange, MA. The vast use of pesticides in coffee production has serious impact on the ecology of the coffee-growing world and the health of farm communities.

Dean has committed his business career to only purchasing shade grown coffees that support healthy environments for coffee growers and protects critical migratory bird habitat. It is important to the company that the quality of coffee includes respect for the quality of life of our southern partners in the coffee world.

16 May 2022XPRIZE Carbon Removal Milestone Award Winner on the Future of Renewable Energy - Hans De Neve // Founder and CEO of Carbyon00:27:55

In episode 142 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Hans De Neve, Founder and CEO of Carbyon, on winning the XPRIZE Carbon Removal Milestone Award and the future of renewable energy through direct air capture.

After finishing his PhD at IMEC, Hans became a researcher within the Alcatel Research & Innovation division – currently part of the Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs organization. Subsequently he's worked for several product units of Alcatel-Lucent where he continued to look for product differentiators and product innovation – facing the challenge to turn innovative ideas into commercial successes.

Hans has Master degree's from KU Leuven and Ghent University in Physics of Microelectronics, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics. He also has PhD from Ghent University  in Micro-electronics, solid state lighting, and III-V semiconductors.

After Alcatel-Lucent, Hans started to specialize in the field of renewable energy, first at VITO in Belgium, later at ECN and TNO in The Netherlands. Following the great experience, he founded Carbyon, a start-up to develop machines that can capture CO2 from air.

Carbyon is developing equipment to filter CO2 from the air and store it underground. Recently, the Dutch start-up was named a Milestone Award winner of the XPRIZE for Carbon Removal. This $1 million incentive prize, funded by Elon Musk and the Musk Foundation, is part of the four-year global XPRIZE competition.

The organization invited innovators and teams worldwide to create a solution that can extract CO2 directly from the atmosphere or oceans and store it in an environmentally friendly way for good.

"For us, winning this award means being recognized. XPRIZE is like the world championship within our field. The fact that the jury ranks our concept among the fifteen best in the world means a lot to us. It is fantastic that three years after the start of our company we are already playing at this level." Hans de Neve, CEO at Carbyon.

Carbyon is a start-up company with the purpose of turning direct air capture into an affordable and scalable technology that can be used to turn the corner on climate change. Carbyon is located at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. This is one of the world’s leading technology research and innovation centers.

Carbyon is a team of scientists and engineers working closely together on one common goal: scale up this technology cost-effectively and provide the world with a powerful tool in the fight against climate change.

Their technology is aimed at saving our planet from climate change. The company strives to maximize impact towards this purpose. Profit serves as a means to achieve this and is not an end in itself.

24 Apr 2019James Bartle // Founder of Outland Denim00:56:18

23 May 2023Esha Chhabra /// Journalist and Author On Her Journey and New Book - Working to Restore00:32:28

In episode 187 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Journalist and Author, Esha Chhabra, on her new book, Working to Restore, and exploring the use cases of regenerative and restorative companies across nine industries.

With over a decade of experience as a dedicated writer and journalist, Esha has been passionately immersed in the realms of global development, the environment, and business. Her insightful contributions have been featured in the New York Times, Economist, Guardian, Forbes, The Washington Post, Fast Company, Wired, and more.

Beyond merely scratching the surface, Esha delves deep into the heart of the matter, untangling the web of greenwashing to determine whether companies are truly driving progress. Her invaluable work has garnered support from esteemed institutions like the UN Foundation and the Pulitzer Center in Washington, DC.

Esha holds degrees from both Georgetown University and the London School of Economics and Political Science, reflecting her exceptional academic background. Although originally from Delhi, she now proudly calls Southern California her home.

Working to Restore - Book

Step into the world of regenerative landscapes, where visionary entrepreneurs wield their businesses as powerful tools for transformative change, transcending the boundaries of sustainability to address pressing social and environmental challenges.

As the veil of capitalism is lifted, exposing the uncomfortable truth of its historical practices, characterized by the extraction of resources from distant corners of the world and ceaseless movement of people and cargo in pursuit of profit, a new breed of startups is reshaping the rules of business.

They question how business is conducted, by whom, and, most importantly, for what purpose. Drawing upon her extensive journalistic experience, Esha Chhabra embarks on a compelling exploration that delves beyond the surface-level appeal of these transformative enterprises, uncovering the intricate realities and promising potential of regenerative business models.

Working to Restore casts a discerning eye on pioneering approaches across nine key domains: agriculture, waste management, supply chain logistics, inclusive collective prosperity, women's empowerment in the workforce, travel, health, energy, and finance.

Through captivating profiles, Chhabra showcases how these trailblazing companies tackle global issues by championing responsible production and consumption, fostering equal opportunities for all, driving climate action, and more. It becomes evident that their work transcends the superficial notions of "sustainability," propelling us into a new era of regeneration and restoration.

16 Feb 2023Building a $100M Brand That Gives Back to Causes Around the World - Steven Izen // Founder of Lokai00:21:03

In Episode 164 of the Disruptors for Good podcast, I speak with Steven Izen, founder of Lokai, on building a $100M brand that gives back to causes around the world.

Lokai bracelets were created with the intention of reminding people to stay balanced. The bracelet is composed of two elements: a white bead filled with water from Mt. Everest, the highest point on Earth, and a black bead containing mud from the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth.

These bracelets serve as a physical representation of life’s highs and lows—a reminder that it’s important to stay balanced amidst life’s challenges

Lokai was founded by Steven Izen with the mission of inspiring people to “live with purpose and find balance in an ever-changing world.” Since then, they have grown wildly successful due to their commitment to helping others—10% of all proceeds go back to charity partners focused on helping those in need around the world.

Today, Lokai offers dozens designs for both men and women, each conveying its own message or cause. They also produce limited edition collections periodically throughout the year based on current events or meaningful occasions such as Pride Month, Earth Day, or Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The company also has major partnerships with the NFL, MLB, NBA, and College Teams.

01 Jun 2021Classic Episode: Kyle Parsons // Founder of Indosole00:39:29

In Episode 11 of the Disruptors for Good podcast I speak with Kyle Parsons, the Founder and CEO of Indosole, on his quest to become the most sustainable footwear company in the world.

Indosole takes old tires that would otherwise contribute to Indonesia’s massive landfill problem, and transforms them into beautiful sandals and shoes through a production process that is organic, toxic free, and environmentally sustainable. Not only that – the process provides dignified work to many in Indonesia.

For a decade now Indosole has strived to be the environmental keepers of the future. They have successfully merged artisan skill with social impact, developing a custom shoemaking process that transforms tires to shoe soles by hand. Through this crafted concept and forward thinking, Indosole has been able to save over 100K+ tires from landfills, but to have a mass scale environmental impact a breakthrough technology was needed.

13 Jul 2022Planting 1 Billion Trees by 2030 Through a Lifestyle Brand - Derrick Emsley // Co-Founder and CEO of tentree & veritree00:41:19

In Episode 147 of the Disruptors for Good podcast I speak with Derrick Emsley, co-founder of tentree and veritree, on the mission to plant 1 billion trees through a lifestyle brand and building tech to verify global restoration projects.

From a young age, Derrick Emsley has been actively involved with environmental stewardship. At 16, he and his brother founded a tree planting company that sold carbon credits to businesses, a venture that saw over $1 million dollars in contracts, and planted 150,000 trees.

This venture helped pave the way to the founding of tentree in 2012, where Derrick operates as the CEO, guiding the Company's vision and strategy. tentree is a lifestyle brand that plants ten trees for every product sold.

In just under a decade, tentree has set new standards in the sustainable apparel world while also leading to the planting of almost 100 million trees.

In 2021, after identifying a need for more transparency in the global reforestation space, with his team, Derrick launched a technology company - veritree - focused on building and providing the tools to monitor, verify, and audit global reforestation work.

Named one of Forbes 30 Under 30 and Canada's Top 40 Under 40, Derrick's efforts continue to focus around accelerating the adoption of nature-based solutions globally.

About tentree

tentree believes it can inspire a new group of consumers to tackle the environmental issues we are now faced with. By planting ten trees and ensuring that all tentree clothing is produced responsibly they allow each and every customer to make a difference.

Their commitment to the environment isn't just a catchy hook to drive sales. It is something they fundamentally believe in, that will have an enormous impact on our environment going forward. It’s your world, your life, your playground. Let’s protect it – together, we can build forests.

Tree planting is a way of restoring the environment, maintaining ecosystems, and making our world a healthier place to live. This isn’t new; but what is new, is how they have used the concept of planting trees to inspire entrepreneurship, build sustainable communities, provide shelter and generally increase quality of life.

The founders of tentree have years of experience in the tree planting industry and have used this to create a business model that ensures trees are planted sustainably and in a way that will have the greatest impact. Some of the many benefits of planting trees include:

- Creating and restoring bio-diversity
- Removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere
- Creating bio-precipitation
- Building sustainable and resilient natural ecosystems

About veritree

Veritree is on a mission to accelerate the adoption of nature-based climate solutions through innovative technology.

Veritree is the only system built specifically to solve the problems of large-scale global restorations groups. Through a comprehensive suite of tools, Veritree utilizes blockchain technology to provide restoration organizations with an integrated platform to support field-level data collection, site planning, inventory (tree) management, and impact monitoring, all while delivering sponsors with a world-class experience.

Restoration projects have historically been very difficult to monitor, measure, and audit. At the same time, the need has never been greater for large-scale restoration projects. Veritree provides the systems to empower the world's best restoration projects to do what they do best - make an impact.

02 Nov 2022Becoming a Tree When You Die - Matthew Kochmann // Founder and CEO of Transcend00:45:18

In Episode 154 of the Disruptors for Good podcast, we speak with Matthew Kochmann, founder and CEO of Transcend, on the green burial movement and helping people and pets become trees when they die.

What is a Green Burial?

A green burial, also known as a natural burial or eco-friendly burial, is a type of burial that involves minimal impact on the environment. This typically involves using only natural materials to bury the body and avoid using any toxic chemicals or processes.

There are many different reasons why someone might choose a green burial instead of a traditional burial. Some people believe that this type of burial is more respectful of the natural world and can help to preserve the environment.

Others simply prefer the simple, natural process over more traditional funerary practices.

What is a Tree Burial?

Our bodies are filled with hyper-rich nutrients that go to waste when cremated or buried in a casket. Finally, there’s a better way to repurpose our bodies by returning them to the earth to feed and nourish forest ecosystems for decades.

Transcend’s Tree Burial™ process utilizes a unique fungi-enriched soil mixture that facilitates a direct connection between the nutrient-rich body and the root system of the tree planted above.

In this way, the body can biologically become the tree, creating and sustaining life for everything around it.

About Matthew Kochmann

From a young age, Matthew Kochmann faced medical and mental health challenges that forced him to confront his own mortality, awakening a lifelong fascination with how humans relate to the mystery of death.

In an attempt to integrate a more accepting approach, he turned to nature… Matthew found solace and inspiration in the central tenets of the American Transcendentalism movement forged by Emerson along with the ancient Vedic philosophies of India: that all living things are interconnected, even after death.

While poetic, he was emboldened to learn that this is also scientifically true in the natural world; when an organism is returned to the earth, it creates more life for everything around it.

With a Landscape Architecture degree from Cornell University, a track record of success as a serial entrepreneur, and experience as a land developer, it’s only natural that Matthew is bringing Tree Burial into existence.

Creating values-aligned impact for the collective has always been his primary aspiration. Most notably, as employee #7 at Uber, he led the charge in transforming NYC’s antiquated and offline taxi industry, only to ultimately walk away from a life-changing amount of equity over ethical concerns.

Matthew’s unique blend of regulatory and real estate knowledge, infused with a spiritually-inspired passion for the environment makes him the ideal steward for the Future Tree movement.

About Transcend

Transcend is the first company dedicated to reforesting the world by planting people (and pets) as trees when they die. Launching in October 2022, Transcend’s unique Tree Burial™ process is a climate change solution that repurposes the most life-giving natural resource known to mankind: our bodies.

A bold, carbon negative alternative to caskets and cremation, Tree Burial creates life from death by returning people to the earth naturally so their biology can literally live on as a tree.

Transcend is pioneering the Future Tree movement to help people cultivate a healthier relationship with their mortality and the planet. By using nature as a vehicle, Tree Burial reminds us that endings are always beginnings.

12 Oct 2020Joseph MacLean // Founder of 50 Million Meals00:36:32

In episode 75 of the Disruptors for GOOD podcast, I speak with Joseph MacLean on his life in social enterprise, finding the best pepper ever, and his journey to donate 50 million meals.

Joseph is a social entrepreneur based in North Vancouver, British Columbia and lives half the year in Phnom Voar, Cambodia, in the heart of the Kampot Pepper growing region. He is building a community-based, Fair Trade distribution system for Kampot Pepper, the best pepper in the world. Using a custom B2C/B2B platform charities, non-profits and worthwhile causes can register for free and open their own custom storefront and during the pandemic receive 50% of all sales revenue.

Kampot Pepper is regarded as the ‘best pepper in the world. It has received Protected Geographical Indicator status (PGI). This puts Kampot Pepper on the same footing as other ‘appellation of origin’ brands like: Champagne, Darjeeling tea, Cognac etc.

Kampot pepper comes in four varieties: green, black, white and red, all from the same plant (Piper Nigrum). The local climate offers perfect conditions for growing pepper and the quartz content of the soil i helps to give Kampot Pepper its unique flavour. The growing conditions are only one of several elements of importance to the production of Kampot pepper.

Knowledge of pepper cultivation and production has been handed down from generation to generation since at least the 13th century and was first described by Chinese diplomat Zhou Daguan when he visited the area during the height of the Angkor Empire.

North Americans consume 217 grams of pepper a year. If 1/10th of one percent bought Fair Trade Kampot Pepper, the best pepper in the world, that can provide 50 million meals because Food Banks can deliver from six to ten meals for every dollar they receive.

Another benefit to this social purpose campaign is that when you purchase Fair Trade Kampot Pepper your purchase not only helps local causes but is integral in rebuilding an industry virtually destroyed by the Pol Pot regime in Cambodia and one that is struggling due to the disastrous effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
