25 Aug 20177. Neil Payne “Alpa Phi”00:46:05
Neil Payne's short film Alpa Phi showed at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2016.  He let me know that he had a lot to get off his chest about filmmaking, about what it's like to make films that challenge people, and about the challenges of life after film school. "Alpha Phi" Short from Neil Payne on Vimeo. When I approached Neil about doing the Discover Film podcast, he asked me to look at a commercial spec spot that he shot.  I found it so bold and direct, that I decided to make this one of the rare times that a filmmaker gets more than one piece of work embedded with their podcast.  (It doesn't hurt that it's 30 seconds.) 20 Sep 201711. Dylan Sanford “An Entanglement”00:55:50
I always ask the guest on Discover Film, "What lead you to become a filmmaker?"  Dylan Sanford's answer is almost as complex and interesting as his short film An Entanglement. 29 Sep 201714. George Moïse “Counter Clockwise”00:59:44
This episode is really fun.  George Moïse came in to talk about his feature film Counter Clockwise, a low-budget indie that you can catch on iTunes and Amazon.  When you think about how frequently big budget Hollywood films drop the time travel, you realize just how much work George had to put into his feature.  And when you hear him talk about the process, he put in more work than you can imagine. 19 Oct 201720. Paulina Lagudi “This Is How”00:46:59
Paulina Lagudi wrote and produced This Is How, an absolute audience favorite at Film Invasion Los Angeles 2016.  Most of the filmmakers who have come in for a Discover Film interview have surprised me, but perhaps none more than Paulina.  From her birthplace and background to her path behind the camera, Paulina surprised me every step of the way. 02 Nov 201722. Preston Peterson & Jason Boesch “West Virginia Stories”01:03:38
I met filmmaking team Preston Peterson & Jason Boesch when their film West Virginia Stories won a Grand Jury Prize at Film Invasion L.A. in 2016.  Along with the other feature films that have been included in the Discover Film podcast, West Virginia Stories is a movie that I consider much better than what is playing at the local multiplex. I was chatting with a festival board member about films, and West Virginia Stories came up.  I wanted to know if it had gotten distribution yet, and it turns out that at this very moment it is being shopped at AFM.  I figured this was as good a time as any to talk with Preston & Jason. It's my hope that West Virginia Stories will be released soon.  Until then, you can enjoy its trailer. Comments are blocked on this website. 09 Dec 201724. Todd Wiseman Jr. “Army of God”00:31:19
Todd Wiseman Jr. is a very busy guy.  I first saw his film Army of God when the jury selected it to screen at Film Invasion L.A. in 2016.  He couldn't come out from NYC for the festival, so I didn't really "meet" him until we got on the phone for this podcast interview.  It turns out that in addition to being a very talented filmmaker, he's a principal behind Man With A Cam and Hayden 5 Media. As interesting as this other work is, I wanted to focus on Army of God because it is one of the few films I've seen on the festival circuit that combined extremely courageous storytelling with extremely professional filmmaking. And, let me say this in advance... regardless of your politics, this film represents a valid, intelligent perspective in a compelling way.  That is what filmmaking is about!   Be sure to also listen to Todd's DF4Q in the next Discover Film podcast. 12 Dec 201726. Chris Fiore “Goodwoman”00:40:03
Chris Fiore directed and produced the documentary short Goodwoman, which won a Grand Jury Prize at Film Invasion L.A. in 2016.  I wanted to know how he had the tools to make such a great film.  The truth is that it is often hard to fill the documentary categories at a film festival, because precious few combine a worthy subject with quality filmmaking. You should watch Goodwoman right now, because it is a GREAT documentary.  Then you should listen to the podcast and find out how a fine artist turned into a filmmaking pro. 14 Dec 201728. James Medeiros & Caroline O’Brien “Puppet Life”01:07:29
Every once in a while you see a comedy that is so smart, subversive and entertaining that it makes you forget the creators are dealing with the most sensitive political subjects in the world.  Puppet Life is one of those films. We showed Puppet Life at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival, and being a fan I wasn't surprised at all that the team behind it gave an incredibly fun Q&A. James Medeiros and Caroline O'Brien wore so many hats on this film that the best title for them is "filmmakers."  If you want to get technical, James wrote, produced, and performs in the film.  Caroline produced and stars in the film.  But the truth is that their collaboration has a long history, and they made the film together. I wanted to include these two on Discover Film from its inception, but we had to wait until they were both in the United States to do it.  Thankfully, they were both in Los Angeles and took the time to come record a podcast. But... BEFORE YOU LISTEN, WATCH THE FILM!   Comments are blocked on this website. To discuss Discover Film episodes, visit the Facebook Group. 19 Jan 201830. Max Silver “Trunk Space”00:54:58
Trunk Space is one of those shorts you watch and think, "I really really really hope these filmmakers get to make a feature film.  Soon."  Honestly, the best part about working at a film festival is seeing great work from young people that puts the big-budget Hollywood movies to shame. In this podcast, I got to talk to Max Silver who wrote and directed Trunk Space.  Max has walked a fascinating path to get where he is today.  I'm glad he shared it with us... but BEFORE YOU LISTEN, WATCH THE FILM! The film Repatriation won a Grand Jury Prize at Film Invasion L.A. in 2017.  It was released on Amazon Prime and to mark that event I wanted to interview Ryan Barton-Grimley (producer/lead actor) and Douglas Mueller (writer/director) for the podcast.  Scheduling got tricky...  then I decided it would be interesting to interview both collaborators separately and then together; Doug & Ryan did not disappoint. 09 Mar 201847. Hayden Croft & Jay Eftimoski “New Age, Olde English”00:52:17
One of the hits at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2016 was New Age, Olde English.  The team behind this film, writer/director Hayden Croft and producer/actor Jay Eftimoski, came in for an interview.  New Age, Olde English is an original and unique comedy with a little touch of horror. Click here to watch New Age, Ole English and then listen to the podcast! And ONE MORE THING.  On this podcast you hear Hayden giving me a copy of his book, "Kisses From Strangers In The Dark," a collection of short stories.  I've been reading it, and it's GREAT.  Seriously.  These short stories are smart and fun.  Each deserves to be its own short film. 07 Mar 201846. The Oscars Results Podcast Party01:28:37
We all made a bunch of predictions in The Oscars Prediction Podcast, so of course we had to meet again to discuss the Oscars results.  Three filmmakers who weren't able to make it to the Prediction Podcast were available for the Results Party... In fact, ELEVEN filmmakers took part in the Discover Film Oscars Pool.  Some have already done a podcast interview, and some are on my to-do list.  In alphabetical order they were: Alex Merkin, (Episode 41), Ashley Campbell (Episode 5), Caroline O'Brien (Episode 28), Doug Mueller (Episode 34), James Medeiros (Episode 28), Jeff Howard (me), Jeremy Foley (upcoming), Joe Petricca (upcoming),  Luis Servera (upcoming), Luísa Novo (upcoming), Preston Peterson (Episode 22.) And the winner was... At first I asked everyone to just make their picks for the top 4 categories; Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor.  And the winers is... Ashley Campbell!  Out of 11 people, she was the only perfect 4 out of 4. But people also submitted their picks for all 24 categories, and the winner of that race was Luis Servera with an impressive 14 out of 24!  (And he left three blank.) After the Oscars, winner Ashley Campbell received her prize of choosing when we would record this podcast, and amazingly five other people were able to attend. Alex Merkin, Caroline O'Brien, James Medeiros, Preston Peterson, and Jason Boesch.  Add me to the mix and that's seven people talking at the same time. Enjoy! Comments are blocked on this website. To discuss Discover Film episodes, visit the Facebook Group. 15 Mar 201849. Miri Stone “The Hunter”00:41:37
The first time I ever programmed a film festival was Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2016.  The first film that screened was The Hunter.  Which means that my first  Q&A with (as the Q, not the A) was Miri Stone.  Like all Q&A's, we only had around 10 minutes to talk, so this filmmaker from Seattle with a New Zealand accent who made an incredible original short film remained a mystery to me.  She's not a mystery any longer! Miri would have been one of the first interviews on this podcast, but we waited until The Hunter became available online.  And if you look to the right, you will see that she came down from Seattle to open the festival with her newborn child.  Talk about a magical way to begin a festival! The Hunter is a beautifully made film and I'd always wondered what was behind it.  Miri shares where it comes from and more.  When you hear her history, you will clearly see that her entire life has primed her to make inventive, fantastical films. 19 Mar 201851. Mikhael Bassilli “Immersion”00:33:05
If I was to use one word for filmmaker Mikhael Bassilli it would be industrious.  Just wait until you hear his story. Mikhael just cannot stop creating, whether it is a business, a screenplay, a film, or a structure to make all of that happen.  But I don't want to give too much away before you hear this interview.  Needless to say, Mikhael completely surprised and impressed me during this talk. For the record, Mikhael's short film Immersion, the opening film at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2017, is not available online yet.  I'm looking forward to when he releases it online, but he still has a few film festivals coming up.  We managed to avoid sharing any spoilers in this interview. Name your favorite film of all time (limit 3) Name a film you think is underrated Name a film you think is overrated Name a lesser-known film that you think people should seek out The first time I met Mikhael Bassilli it was because he had won the screenwriting competition 100 Screenplays in 2017.  (You can see me about to hand him the award in that pic.)  A few months later, he submitted the great short film Immersion to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival and we selected it to be the opening film that year. You know I love to hear people's DF4Q's and considering Mikhael's incredible work output, I was very curious to hear his favorites.  Give it a listen!
22 Mar 201853. Mylissa Fitzsimmons “That Party That One Night”00:40:19
In 2017, Filmmaker Mylissa Fitzsimmons won the Audience Award at Film Invasion Los Angeles for her short film That Party That One Night.  Whether it's the directing, the cinematography, the lighting, the writing or the performances, there's an art and a sophistication to all the elements you see in That Party That One Night that we see all too rarely.  Whenever I see a movie this good, particularly a high-school movie, it makes me a little frustrated with the high-school fare that Hollywood puts out.  Actually, it makes me a lot frustrated. So go right now and watch That Party That One Night at Mylissa's website. Then come back and listen to the interview.  (You can click on the pic below to see the film.) 19 Dec 2019125. Linda Christina Riedmann “The Wind Phone”00:45:43
Linda Christina Riedmann was all smiles for her DIF interview This podcast represents the second DIF interview for The Wind Phone, a beautiful short film that pulled in 6 awards at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2019.  Linda Christina Riedmann produced this amazing film and I have to say that she and writer/director Kristen Gerweck represent one of the healthiest, most productive filmmaking partnerships I've seen on the festival circuit. You cannot watch The Wind Phone online yet.  It came this close to making the shortlist for the Oscar for Best Live Action Short.  Yes, this film is that good.  I cannot tell you how disappointed I was when I didn't make the list.  I know the Oscar process is more about publicity than quality, but there's a little spot in my heart and my head that hopes for the day quality triumphs. Instead of complaining all day, I will just let you know that whenever Linda & Kristen decide to release The Wind Phone online, I will be sure to include a link here for you to see it.  Then you can be as angry as I am about the Oscar snub. There's no major spoilers in this interview.  Just the fascinating story how a talented, hard-working young woman from Austria ended up in Los Angeles producing Oscar worthy short films. Yep. JJ Anderson & Tito Molina in DIF HQ JJ Anderson & Tito Molina form the partnership Hrdwrker and  among their many collaborations is the documentary short "Jonah" which won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2018. Jonah is a beautifully made documentary.  When you watch it you can see the respect and thoughtfulness that the filmmakers have for Jonah, his work, and the medium of filmmaking.  It really should have surprised no one that the Q&A for Jonah at SOFF was delightful and that the filmmakers are delightful people. JJ and Tito are those people who come over for their interview and I find myself talking with them about all sorts of interesting things in the kitchen until realize that if we don't hurry up and sit down at the microphones we might forget to actually record an interview.  Fortunately we DID record and interview and you can listen to it below. 02 Apr 2020127. Darren Coyle “Chasing Sunshine”00:47:56
Darren did his DIF interview via FaceTime, because we were trapped at hime during a global pandemic.  (Jeff is in the upper corner.) Darren Coyle's feature film Chasing Sunshine won THREE awards at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2018.  Darren and his collaborators put together a delightful film into this world of dreariness, and the great news is that YOU CAN WATCH IT NOW! We waited to record Darren's podcast interview until the film was released, and now it has been.  Go to darrencoyle.com.  They pushed up the release date because at this very moment nearly everyone in the world is stuck at home. Yes, we are "flattening the curve" of COVID-19 infections, which means we need to be entertained at home. Look no further and watch Chasing Sunshine. It's time to stop bingeing shows about serial killers and tiger abusers.  It's time to support a truly enjoyable and truly independent film! You can listen to the interview before or after watching the film.  I don't think there are any spoilers.  Also, the audio quality is awful.  I'm sorry!  I don't know what went wrong, especially with my mic.  But still, you'll hear Darren's story and the tale of how Chasing Sunshine went from an idea to finished film. 11 Mar 2021139. David Aufdembrinke “DREAM/life”01:01:45
A still from the award winning short film "DREAM/life" David Aufdembrinke made the beautiful short film "DREAM/life" which took home three awards at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2019, including the Grand Jury Prize for Best Director, and the Filmmakers Awards for Outstanding Short Film and Outstanding Screenplay. "DREAM/life" is in Season 3 Episode 2 of the Discover Indie Film TV Series on Amazon Prime Video.  Click here to be taken to the Amazon page. or you can go to Prime Video on your TV and search for "Discover Indie Film." This interview kind of has to have two disclaimers.  The first is that we recorded this in February, 2020, a few weeks before a global pandemic hit.  There are not any timely references, but David mention future filmmaking plans that obviously got interrupted by COVID-19.  The second is that we spoke over Skype or FaceTime, I can't remember which, and we had a little delay that often made it harder for us to not speak over each other.  My hope is that someday the world returns to normal and perhaps David will find himself in Los Angeles and we can talk about his next film in person! Caroline O'Brien & James Medeiros sharing a mic at DIF HQ Caroline O’Brien & James Medeiros first appeared on this podcast because their short film "Puppet Life" was a huge hit at the 2016 Sherman Oaks Film Festival.  Soon "Puppet Life" joined the first season of the Discover Indie Film TV series on Amazon Prime Video. We recorded a second interview because their follow up "Puppet Life 2: Human Dating," which pulled in awards at the 2018 Sherman Oaks Film Festival, became a part of the second season of Discover Indie Film. This interview is the kind of chat people have when they have done two festival Q&A's, a podcast interview, and two Oscar special podcasts.  In other words, I'm almost too familiar with these two wonderful people to have done a proper interview. And seriously, you should watch both Puppet Life films.  Click here to be taken to the Amazon page. or you can go to Prime Video on your TV and search for "Discover Indie Film."  They are in season 1 episode 5 and season 2 episode 10. Writer/Director/Instructor Lonnie Martin at DIF HQ Lonnie Martin brought his superb feature film "The Last of the Manson Girls" to Film Invasion Los Angeles back in 2019, where it was an audience favorite and puled in some awards. David and I recorded this virtual interview on July 27, 2019, long before virtual chats became standard procedure during 2020's pandemic. 05 Jul 2021146. Rosie Grace & Nate Hapke “She & Her”01:05:40
Rosi & Nate at DIF HQ in August 2019 Rosie Grace and Nate Hapke have been collaborating on film productions for a few years now.  Before their work together truly took off I had interviewed Nate about his film "One More" (SOFF 2017) but get this list... after that film came three Rosie & Nate collaborations; "She & Her" (FILA 2019) "To The Moon and Back" (FILA 2020) and "Ride Share" (SOFF 2020). We recorded this interview in August 2019, not long after "She & Her" played at FILA 2019.  Since Nate had told me his filmmaking story wayback in episode 69 of this podcast it was clearly time to hear Rosie's story. If you want to learn about this team, their small/TALL Productions Facebook page is a great place to start: https://www.facebook.com/smalltallproductions/ Soon after we recorded this, I got unlucky and through a series of unfortunate events many podcasts that I had recorded got mothballed.  It took me forever to get the emotional bandwidth to go back into the vault and get those unreleased podcasts out!  The good news is that you finally get to hear this smart, enthusiastic filmmaker talk about her craft! And I promise to not let the DIF vault ever fill up again.  I'm going to start a series of new interviews where no post-production is necessary, because life no longer allows me that luxury.  I promise! 16 Jul 2021148. Hayden Croft “Last Wish”00:58:05
Hayden Croft at FILA 2018 Hayden Croft's short film "Last Wish" was an official selection at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2018 and, honestly, would have likely won "Best Short Comedy" if that award had existed at the time.  (We realized the next year that we had to expand our award categories.). This nuanced, daring comedy will always be one of my favorites, because it is not just hilarious also sparks debate. Hayden's previous film "New Age, Olde English" screened at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2016 and when I started the podcast he was in the first batch of filmmakers whom I reached out to.  (You can hear his first interview here.)  When he hit us with his new work, it made sense to have him come in to talk about "Last Wish" as well. Hayden Croft is one of my favorite filmmakers.  He writes every day and has even published a wonderful book of short stories that I can absolutely recommend.  Go to his website to get your copy. 20 Jul 2021150. Pedro Patricio “Kids Don’t Die” & “Tirachinas”00:49:14
Writer/Director Pedro Patricio at SOFF 2017 with his friend and fellow filmmaker Fei Yu. Filmmaker Pedro Patricio has been a part of the Discover Indie Film family from the beginning.  His film "Tirachinas" was a smash hit at the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2017 and that film is in the very first season of the Discover Indie Film TV Series. Pedro returned with his remarkable follow-up film "Kids Don't Die" to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2020.  One of the best films in the festival, "Kids Don't Die" pulled in the award for Outstanding Short Film - Sci Fi. Full disclosure.  When the Discover Indie Film podcast was just beginning in 2017, I recorded a phone call with Pedro.  He had to jump into a Brooklyn coffee house and ask for a quiet corner for us to talk, and it was wonderful.  And then a failed hard-drive left that conversation lost forever.  I have regretted it ever since.  It was a pleasure to finally get Pedro on the DIF mic's again!  Although I confess that our previous conversations made for a shorthand here, so in this interview you do not hear as much about his background as you would have and should have in 2017.
