22 Oct 2021#Bonus Episode | And Then What? Mental Health Awareness Special with Yaron Engler01:06:34

To recognise World Mental Health Day we recorded a special episode of the County Business Clubs Sussex Podcast with the inspiring Yaron Engler.

The episode discusses many of the issues surrounding mental health and the importance of communication, understanding and excepting our emotions.

A key point is that there is still a narrative within society, especially amongst men that vulnerability is seen as weakness and this has to change.

As business owners and entrepreneurs, the world can sometimes be a lonely place, therefore it is so important to reach out and speak to people, be more open, honest and authentic amongst our peers.. as the quote says "I'm strong enough to be weak".

I shared my personal journey with mental health that I haven't spoken about previously and I hope when you hear the episode that it will inspire others to share their stories, to communicate openly and start to change the narrative of the past.

My guest on the podcast this week is the inspirational Jo Baldwin Trott. Since leaving the police force in 2003, she has become a consultant, mentor, coach, keynote speaker, international best selling author and publisher. She has worked with A list celebrities, TV stars and award winning coaches and has been described as a combination of a coach, therapist, business expert and healer.

This is one of the most powerful episodes I have recorded so far. Jo shares in depth some of her near death experiences whilst in the police force and why she had to leave after 9 years. We discuss the lessons she has learned throughout her journey and how she believes everyone is equal.

Through her own experiences and spiritual clarity, she now helps her clients to find their own truth and seek true happiness, helping them find answers to the biggest questions; your what, why and how, and believes success is to be felt deeply, not simply viewed objectively. We delve into what is 'Empty Success Syndrome' and how she asks her clients and the listeners,

04 Jul 2022#E34 | Building a Global Brand with Mark Woolley01:29:46

My Guest on the podcast this week is the founder and International Creative Director of leading British hair brand, Electric Mark Woolley.

Electric is one of the beauty industry’s most celebrated hair brands, encompassing award winning salons, an ethical products line, global education, a photographic and film studio, a shared workspace for leading creatives in central London, and its farm & headquarters right here in the Sussex countryside.

The Electric brand continues to grow, absorbing my guests down-to-earth nature, and accessible style, as well as reflecting his energy, drive and vision.

His work regularly appears in leading publications across the globe. He is frequently used as an expert on trends and industry topics and is a regular contributor on global television.

When I started my business Journey in Brighton our two salons were 2 mins round the corner from each other, but inside were pretty much worlds apart. Since starting the podcast I have been dying to have this conversation with him, and it was certainly worth the wait. We delve into Mark's mindset, drive and determination from a young age and owning his first salon at 21. The ability to back himself from as young as 18, doing session work and saying yes to opportunities presented to him. The biggest question was around culture and how he created such a winning culture in a competitive industry from which he has grown a global brand. I could have genuinely continued the conversation for hours and this has to be up there with my favourite episodes yet..

25 Jul 2022#E37 The Game Changers Striving for Equality | Karen Dobres & Jo Child01:27:12

After a week when the England Women's national team made it to the Euro 2022 Semi Final we have a Euro 2022 Podcast special this week as for the first time I welcome two guests from different organisations, but with a shared mission and vision!

I am joined by Karen Dobres, Director of Lewes FC and Jo Child, Founder of Co-Women. We recorded this episode two days prior to the Lionesses Euro 2022 quarter final clash with Spain at the Amex. This highlights how far the women’s game has come, but still a long way from achieving equality within the game. These two inspirational women have recently joined forces to work together and push for further ways to strive for equality in sport and business.

This episode release could not have been timed better, as the England Women's team await their semi final clash v Sweden on Tuesday 26th July 2022. With the lack of media coverage of the Women's achievements it is clear that despite how far the women's game has come we are still a million miles away from equality. In this brilliant episode, we discuss equality in the game as well in business. We delve into the challenges these two brilliant women have faced along their journey, imposter syndrome, joy for well-being, neurodiversity, sex positivity for women in business and much more. It is a truly inspiring episode and one that will open a lot of discussion points I am sure as these game changers strive for a more equal society.

01 Aug 2022#E38 How Being Different Can Be Your Superpower in Business🌈 | Sam Murphy01:11:23

My guest this week is Sam Murphy, MD of award-winning brokerage - Mortgage Medics who help people buy and refinance property as efficiently as possible.

Sam is a strong advocate for Diversity & Inclusion within the LGBTQIA+ community and ahead of Brighton pride in August, I was truly honoured to have this conversation with him.

In this amazing episode Sam shares his story, from starting a business at 23, some of the challenges he has faced along the way and how there is always a learning point. From a fraudulent business partner to how being a gay man in business has been a superpower. We discuss culture and how from day one Sam's primary goal is to look after people and treat them with respect. A fascinating point was around work life balance and the unhealthy narrative that to be successful you have to work 16 hour days on 4-5 hours sleep. Sam is living proof that is not the case, as he mentions we all go through periods of graft as he has, but it's far more important to be consistent and he has consistently grown a successful business over 15 years, and happiness is where we find true success.

15 Aug 2022#E40 Mental Health, Life Choices and Curve Balls | Tom Hooper01:05:44

My guest on the podcast this week is Tom Hooper, someone I have only met a few months ago but have been inspired by his journey. He has been described as a force of nature, someone that is motivated, determined, focused and a larger-than-life character.. Getting to know him and following him on social media I know he has had his own personal struggles with mental health and we both share a passion to change the narrative out there, especially amongst men that vulnerability is a sign of weakness.

I believe everyone has a story to tell and sometimes the lessons we learn in the harsh reality of life can be applied in business as well, such as resilience, determination and a positive mindset. With the podcast I have always asked my guests to come with an open mind and be as honest and authentic as possible. During this conversation Tom did just that. He shared his story from growing up in an orphanage, getting involved in drugs and alcohol, being arrested too overdosing, but ultimately making a choice to use the negative situations in his life as fuel to motivate him and start a new chapter.

At the time of recording this episode he was due to launch his new business, but has since been thrown a new curve ball and circumstances have changed, we therefore had to cut some elements of the episode out. After listening to his journey and what he has been through, this is just another challenge that I know he will face head on and will bounce back to start a new faze of his life and write the next chapter.

This is one of the most raw, brutally honest episodes`I have recorded and I am grateful to Tom for sharing his story so openly. This hopefully will inspire others that are maybe feeling in a dark place or going through a difficult period, to hopefully they find the strength to reach out and ask for support in whatever form that may be, and realise that we do have a choice.

Marc's story is truly inspiring, he talks about how his life changed at 14 when he suffered severe burns in an accident in Ireland, how he nearly died twice and how that first day back in school after the accident was the one of toughest of his life. Yet his determination and positive attitude to make the most of life took him on a journey into the world of poker to starting his own business 23D in 2017. My Guest on the podcast this week is Lyndsey Clay, a Qualified Coach, Networking Champion and Social Concierge, who is passionate about connecting people through supporting local businesses to create lasting personal and professional relationships, right here in Brighton & Hove.

Ricky is one of the most positive, enthusiastic, energetic people I have had on the podcast. He discusses how at a young age he lost his best friend and he made a promise to himself and Russ that he would not take life for granted and have a positive outlook. That mindset helped him to start and build his own businesses. Him and his wife started their company Itty Bitty, an online baby boutique business when he left his previous employment, his wife Kate was made redundant and they had just started a young family. He refers to this period as 'The Wall', as they needed to generate an income to put food on the table and Since opening their doors for business, Itty Bitty has managed to tap into this gap and carve out its own space online with an unrivalled range of styles for babies and kids up to 16 years old.

14 Nov 2022#E46 | Building a Business on Strong Family Values01:21:27

In this weeks podcast for the first time I interview three guests, brothers, Andy, Chris and Steve Tugwell from TSS Facilities. They all joined their family business, started by their dad Denis Tugwell and business partner James Walker in 1971, at different stages over the last 40 years, and have taken a refrigeration company to a full service facilities management company. A business with 51 years of history that has been built on strong family values from the start.

In this brilliant episode we discuss the company values that has helped to build the foundation of a strong company culture. Some key traits that stood out for me about these three brilliant individuals, aligned with many of my own core values and just one of the reasons I loved recording this episode.

💥 Respect

💥 Accountability

💥 Trust

💥 Integrity

We chat about some of the challenges they faced running a business over so many years, including a tough period in the late 90's when the business lost a large client and were facing CCJ's, bailiffs knocking at the door regularly, robbing Peter to pay Paul to just survive. But as Andy stated this was where the family showed their strength, this is when they were at their best and closing the business wasn't an option, they came together to not only survive but thrive and grow the company to over 50 staff and this year are nominated for the Sussex Business Award, Large Company of the year. This is an episode not to miss.

21 Nov 2022#E47 | Living Life on the Fringe01:22:40

My guest on the podcast this week is CEO of Brighton Fringe Julian Caddy.  A creative and entrepreneurial cultural leader, working for 25 years across the UK and worldwide. He is passionate about widening access to the arts for both artists and audiences. He leads the central administration and management of England’s largest annual arts festival (750 events in 130 venues, with 380,000 attendances in 2022).

This is a truly fascinating episode and an insight into the struggles the events industry have faced since the pandemic but especially Brighton Fringe and even more so now. Julian also shares his clear passion and love for the arts and why Fringe as a platform is something that as a society and a community we need in our city.

'Nothing can really replace the transient joy that you experience, of sitting down, or standing up. You know, beer in hand, or not, and watching the lights go up'

When listening to this episode, allow yourself to think back to lockdown when there was a time when we wondered if we would ever be at another gig, comedy show, live performance, theatre experience and how much that was missed. As the above quote says nothing can replace that experience and its is so important that we support the arts and events industry as much as possible as we don't always realise what we have got until its gone. This is such a powerful, insightful episode from a truly inspirational CEO.

In this weeks episode I talk to the amazing Marcella Whittingdale. Whether reporting live from Afghanistan or bagging a big name celebrity exclusive, her career is consistently exciting and varied.

As well as working for some of Britain’s biggest broadcasters on TV as a studio presenter (BBC, GMTV, ITV) Marcella is also an experienced radio presenter, with the ability to turn her hand to any story. 12 Dec 2022Bonus Episode #E6/24 Finding out who you really are..Human First, Professional Second: Lewis Hatchett00:57:36

My guest this week former Sussex Cricketer, Lewis Hatchett. Founder of Sport Yogi, performance mindset & mindfulness coach for athletes, podcast host, yogi and student.

From achieving one of the most defiant careers in first-class cricket to it ending overnight. Lewis story began when his dream ended. Through the pain and uncertainty came a new understanding of what happens when you put everything on what you do and forget the power of the human being you want to be.

Through practice and introspection immerged a new perceptive built on mindfulness with a driven athlete mindset.

This was episode 6 of the 24 hour podcast and I could have honestly talked to Lewis for the full 24 hours, he shared:

💥 His drive, focus and determination from a young age to achieve his dream

💥 Achieving his dream against the odds

💥 The pain he suffered when that dream came to an abrupt end at just 25

💥 His search for who he really is

This is a brilliant episode with some great insights into the mindset of an incredible athlete, but ultimately an incredible human being. Lewis took me on an inspirational journey through the podcast discussing his drive and focus from a young age and the eutrophic moment of signing a contract with Sussex CCC and achieving his child hood dream. Then the devastation of that dream coming to an end at just 25 years old, but using his tool box of skills that he has learnt throughout his life and career to go on a journey of self discovery and ultimately ask himself that all important question.... Who am I? There are so many fantastic takeaways from this episode, especially the 'Human Knowing, Human Doing' exercise that I'll advise you all to give it a try..

19 Dec 2022#E49 | Taking on Challenges and Life One Day at a Time: Rob Starr02:01:33

Welcome to the final episode of 2022 and of series 3. And I could not think of a better way to round things off than with Rob Starr, CEO and founder of SEICO Group and Chairman of the Starr Trust Charity. Rob has swum the English channel, completed an Iron Man and at the start of this year in SBT we covered the beginning of his journey to complete 52 Olympic Triathlons in 2022. On 30th November, he completed his 52nd Triathlon in less than a year raising over £100,000 for the charity. I have it said it in many posts this year, that in life we meet people that have a true impact on us and inspire us, there is not many people I have met in my life who have had as much of an impact on me or inspired me more than Rob.

This is a truly amazing episode packed with incredible insights. Rob takes us on a journey from leaving school with one O Level and being told he would be lucky if he would clear rubbish for a living, but on the other side he had his dad telling him 'You can do anything you want son and I believe in you' which highlights the power of having someone believe in you from a young age. This gave Rob the self belief to leave school, find a job and start his own business in his early 20's, and with his 'can do' attitude towards life he has been running the business for over 31 years. He tells us about the ups and downs of this journey with true openness, honesty and how he felt that 25 out of the 31 years he could have lost the business. We delve into the profound effect that losing his dad and best friend 16 years ago had on him and ultimately what led him to starting the Starr Trust with a £20,000 bank loan. We discuss Rob's many challenges including his channel swim and this years epic 52 Olympic Triathlons in 48 weeks that he completed on 30th November 2020.

Getting to know Rob has been one of the highlights of my year and once you listen to this episode you will get a glimpse of why and the mindset behind this inspirational, unique individual.

28 Dec 2022Series 3 Round up 🎙00:35:30

That as they say is a wrap.. Series 3 is complete with 16 truly amazing conversations with 16 brilliant guests.

This series has been a real game changer for me. I am on a mission to try and change the narrative around how success is measured and that someone's success especially in business, should not be measured purely a financial metric. I tried to delve deep into what makes these exceptional individuals tick, many of who are very financially successful, but the overriding message is that ultimately we are all searching for fulfilment and contentment, and money and financial success although provides us with potential opportunities and the ability to buy more stuff, it doesn't give us purpose and certainly not fulfilment.

As we navigate through this crazy journey of life and I continue to learn from the amazing stories that people share with me on the podcast as well as my own expirences, I am continually reminded by everyone, that although it is a cliche and we all know I love a cliche, life is a journey and not a destination, getting up everyday and doing your best, whatever that looks like to you, enjoying the process and being present in the moment, that is the key to true success, happiness and fulfilment.

When listening to these episodes please ask yourself, how do you measure your success?

For me Charlie Macksey described it brilliantly in the book 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse'.

What do you think success is?' 'To love said the mole' ❤️

I would like to thank all my amazing 16 guests, Mark Wooley, Mike Monk, Jessica Freeman, Karen Dobres, Jo Child, Sam Murphy, Ed Chinn, Tom Hooper, Fiona Anderson, Marc Convey, Lindsey Clay, Chris Goodman, Ricky Whiting, Andy, Steve, Chris Tugwell, Julian Caddy, Dan Wade and Rob Starr. I am so grateful for your time, your openness, honesty and sharing your inspirational stories and journeys with me and our listeners.

09 Jan 2023Bonus Episode #E11/24: The Importance of a Strong Work Ethic | Gordon Greer 00:48:36

I am delighted to share episode 11 of the 24 hour podcast this week with former Brighton & Hove Albion captain and Scottish International Gordon Greer. After watching Gordon lead the BHAFC team out at the Amex many times, especially that iconic first league game at the Amex v Doncaster Rovers, what Brighton fan could forget that. It was a real honour to chat with him about his career and now life after football.

We discussed a variety of topics:

💥 Career Highlights

💥 Leadership

💥 Strong Work Ethic and Resilience

💥 Life after football

It was a fascinating conversation as he spoke about walking out for the first time playing for his country and how it wasn't just for him, but his family and friends he grew up with. What it was like playing under Gus Poyet and his time at Brighton. Knowing Gordon for a few years now and watching him play many times, he is someone with an exceptional work ethic and a leader both on and off the pitch, as he still demonstrates today by supporting the next generation of players and sharing his experiences, in his role with BHAFC as pathway development manager. This is a cracking episode and a must listen for any football and especially Brighton fans.

06 Feb 2023Bonus Episode #E12/24 How to Build a Value Driven Community: Leigh Otterson Walter00:53:18

This week's episode is from the 24 hour podcast with the amazing Leigh Otterson Walter, an entrepreneur, community builder and truly wonderful, inspirational human being.

In this episode we discuss:

💥 Her traumatic childhood in South Africa

💥 Parenthood

💥 How Covid destroyed her travel business

💥 What it takes to build a value driven community

This was a truly wonderful conversation with a wonderful human being. Leigh shared openly about her traumatic childhood and what it was like growing up in a neglected family environment and why she left home at 16 and moved to England on her own at just 19. We discuss the joys and struggles of parenthood, and how through a need to seek support from other mum's she built a community of nearly 20,000 Mum's and Dad's in Worthing. She talks about how Covid destroyed her travel business that she had grown for 9 years, and the feeling of shame, failure and mixture of emotions she felt when she had to close it in 2021. For me her definition of success encapsulates why she is such an amazing, inspirational woman and why I loved this conversation so much, as I am sure you will.

Everyone has a story to tell... Happy Listening 🎧

💥 'You can be as successful as you want, whatever that looks like for you, you can make all the money in the world if that's what motivates you, but at the end of your life when you have nothing, all you have is love, and all you have is the relationships with the people in your life that you've built over that time and all the money in the world is not going to help you at that point'

13 Feb 2023Bonus Episode #E5/24 The Mindset of High Performing Athletes: Will Buckley00:40:58

This week's episode is from the 24 hour podcast with the Brighton & Hove Albion legend Will Buckley. Every Brighton & Hove Albion FC fan remembers that epic first competitive game at the Amex with Will's late winner against Doncaster, we relive that moment along with other highlights from his amazing career and tap into the mindset of what it takes to achieve high performance.

In this episode we discuss:

💥 His time at Brighton

💥 What it takes to be a high performing athlete

💥 Leadership

💥 The importance of Hard Work

This was a fascinating conversation as Will talked about playing football growing up and his pure love of the game. We discuss what it was like playing under Gus Poyet and what true leadership looks like, knowing and understanding how to get the best out of each player. This relates so much to the business world and not just in sport, as a leader if you can know and understand the individuals in your team, you can motivate, inspire and get the best performance from them. Will talks about his time at Brighton and the amazing buzz in the city during that period and those first seasons at the Amex, as well as what he is up to now and life after football as he helps to support and inspire the next generation of players as an FA Registered Intermediary and Owner of WEB Sports Management. One of the major key takeaways for me though was Will's mindset and the ability to focus on 'what I am doing right now' and 'how do I get better at this', that along with a strong work ethic is ultimately how we have achieve high performance.

Everyone has a story to tell... Happy Listening 🎧

27 Feb 2023A Tribute to Alex Pemberton 1946 - 2023 ~ Vince Pemberton00:03:38

🖤 "Don't take anything for granted" 🖤

On 31st January 2023 I recorded an episode of the podcast with CEO of Rivervale Cars Ltd my good friend Vince Pemberton. On every episode I always ask my guests who has inspired them throughout their journey. During the whole of this episode it was clear that Vince’s Dad, Alex Pemberton had been that person for him, not only as a father, but a friend, business partner and confidant. Unfortunately since recording the episode, Alex sadly passed away earlier this month, my thoughts are with Vince and his family at this time, for me this is a reminder as you’ll hear and as Alex would often say to Vince, “Don’t take anything for granted”.

This trailer is a tribute to the late Alex Pemberton.

06 Mar 2023#E50 Using The Power of Visualisation to Achieve High Performance: Sally Gunnell OBE00:50:00

This is the 50th Episode of the County Business TALKS podcast and the start of series 4. To kick off this series I was honoured and privileged to welcome the one and only Sally Gunnell OBE; the Essex Girl who captured the hearts of a nation. She remains the only woman ever to hold four major track titles concurrently – with Gold medals in the Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth games.

Following her retirement from international athletics, she developed a new career as a television presenter and inspirational speaker and has written four books on fitness, health, self-fulfilment, and wellbeing.

This was such an honour to have this conversation as Sally shared her inspirational story, we discussed what life was like growing up on the farm in Essex and her early athletics career at Essex ladies. We delve into that glance in 1991 in the final of the World Championships that cost her the gold medal, her mindset around then and how she bounced back, focusing on her mindset and using the power of visualisation to achieve her dream, as a year later in Barcelona 1992 she was standing on the podium as Olympic Champion. We talk about teamwork, even in individual sport and how important it was to surround herself with a great team to help her achieve her goals. Sally discussed the later part of her athletics career and her struggles with injury, to life after athletics as a business woman and sharing the lessons she has learnt through her journey around resilience and visualisation to achieve high performance not only in business but in life, and inspiring others with her incredible story.

I could not have thought of a better way to celebrate my 50th episode and kick off Series 4 💥

13 Mar 2023#E51 How to Build a Business in the Motor Trade but Never taking anything for Granted: Vince Pemberton 01:23:01

This weeks special guest is CEO of Rivervale Cars Ltd Vince Pemberton. He has been in the motor trade and Sussex business community for nearly three decades and today he shares his journey with us. Two weeks ago we released a tribute from this episode to Vince's father Alex Pemberton who sadly passed away recently.

This is a brilliant episode from someone that was told by his careers officer he would never get a job, no one would employ him and wouldn't amount to anything, but proved that through being a good person, working hard and building relationships just how wrong they were. We talk about Vince's early career and the lessons he learnt from cold calling, to his first role at Rivervale to starting Eagle Oak Vehicles ltd with his dad. Vince tells me how he has never sold anything to anyone, he simply helps people buy what they want including some well known names such as Tony Cascarino, Teddy Sheringham and Bradley Walsh to name a few. We delve into the strong culture at Rivervale that has helped the company continue to grow from strength to strength over the years despite many challenges all businesses have faced recently, but how the people in the business are what really make it what it is, and how the values of former Chairman, the late Tommy Sopwith are still above the door as you come into the building... 'Do it the right way, do it the Rivervale way'.

There are so many great takeaways from this brilliant CEO and entrepreneur, you can tell his passion for the industry and Rivervale as a company. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did...

27 Mar 2023#E53 From Problem Child to Olympic Silver Medalist: Leon Taylor 01:40:36

My guest on the podcast this week is an Olympic Silver Medalist and the voice of British diving Leon Taylor. Leon is also a Speaker, Executive coach, Mentor, Author, Co-founder Adeki Performance and BBC Commentator.

Leon's passion for everything he does has helped him achieve sustained success at the highest level. A 20 year career in a demanding sport is a notable feat in itself. But his breakthrough successes brought diving to the attention of the British public.

Training in the pre-lottery funding era in a minority sport had its challenges. Yet at the Athens Olympics of 2004, Leon and his diving partner Peter Waterfield, managed to secure Britain's first medal in the sport for 44 years. An honour which led to new investment in the sport and the development of a new crop of British talent.

This is a truly amazing episode as we look back at Leon's childhood and how he was labelled a problem child from a young age but found his outlet through physical movement and activity. From 6 years old he had a dream of going to the Olympics and he shares his inspiring story of how he got there. We talk about his bouts of depression and struggles with mental health, and delve into the mindset of what helped him return from injury to eventually stand on the podium in 2004 Olympic Games and realise his dreams. Leon shares insights into how him and diving partner Peter Waterfield were able to tap into their unconscious mind and achieve a state of flow that saw them win an Olympic Silver medal and Britains first diving medal in 44 years. There are so many amazing takeaways that anyone listening can take into their business or life to help achieve their dreams and tap into their potential. Leon is an incredible human being and this is an episode and conversation I will never forget.

03 Apr 2023#E54 Starting a Dad's Revolution with Dad La Soul Founder ~ Dan Flanagan 01:40:18

My guest on the podcast this week is the founder of Dad La Soul, Dan Flanagan. An entrepreneurial, curious and creative thinker with a relentless passion and commitment for increasing the understanding of how social impact research, reporting, storytelling and commercially-focused strategies can work together hand-in-hand.

He is an award-winning and respected thought leader in the men's mental health and fatherhood field. His work has been showcased by The All-Party Parliamentary Committee on the Future of Fatherhood, The Department of Media, Culture and Sport, The Guardian, BBC World Service, Radio 4, Huffington Post, and ITV.

This is such a powerful episode as Dan's openess and honesty truly highlights the importance of why we need to ask for help when we are struggling with our mental health. He shares how growing up his mum had a breakdown, his parents split up and the impact this had on him. He goes on to talk about his own mental health issues, a dark time where after challenges in his business he felt like a failure, that he had let his family down and how his son giving him chicken pox forced him to stop, and was a turning point for him reassess what was important and was ultimately the catalyst for him launching Dad La Soul and building a community and support network for Dad's around the world. With suicide the largest killer for men under 45, with 96 men taking their own lives per week in the UK a truly staggering statistic and one that needs to change. It can only change if together we break the stigma attached to mental health and show, as Dan has done that asking for help, being vulnerable and talking openly to people about our struggles is not a sign of weakness, but shows immense bravery and strength. Dan has started a Dad's revolution and one that is truly needed, this is his story.

10 Apr 2023#E55 Challenging the Status Quo and Championing Choice: Lucy Tarrant 01:02:58

My guest on the podcast this week is Lucy Tarrant a Solicitor with over 28 years legal experience and Managing Director at Cognitive Law Limited, she is past President of the Sussex Law Society and someone who has been on a mission to create a place where solicitors could work to live and not live to work.

In this brilliant episode Lucy talks about how she was a witness in a magistrates court for a road traffic accident and how the prosecuting barrister had inspired her and ignited something inside her to follow a career in the legal profession. She describes her unorthodox path to becoming a solicitor through, hard work and continued determination before working her way to partner in a large regional law firm. However reaching this status had not given Lucy the work life balance that she wanted and as a single parent decided to create a modern law firm that challenged the status quo and championed choice, in 2014 with business partner Stuart Gillespie, Cognitive Law was born. Lucy was adamant that she wanted to create a firm 'where solicitors can work to live not live to work, borne from a deep-seated belief that having a passion for the law doesn't mean sitting at a desk in an office all day, every day; or compromising peoples personal lives'. We discuss some of the challenges she has faced over the past 9 years and despite some of the pressures of growing the firm to five head office staff and 15 solicitors all whom work remotely and flexibly, and how she has maintained her own work life balance, continuing to advocate passionately for giving solicitors their lives back and creating an alternative place to practice the law. This episode is a great example of someone that wanted to do things her way and do things differently, so created her own business that would do just that.

17 Apr 2023#E56 From Press Releases to Personal Struggles: An Inspiring Story of a PR Agency Owner's Battle with MS and Thriving in the Industry for 30 Years 01:44:28

My guest on the podcast this week is the owner of Cobb PR, Tim Cobb. Tim has been an influential and inspirational figure within the Sussex business community for nearly 3 decades. I was fortunate enough to meet him at the start of my business journey in Sussex when he came in for a traditional wet shave at the salon, some 11 years ago to help me launch the shave academy. I was grateful for his support then as much as I am today.

This is an inspiring story of someone that had two dreams, to work in Fleet Street and work for himself. Tim shares his journey of how he got to Fleet Street and started his own PR Agency that has been running for nearly 30 years, both dreams achieved, whilst maintaining his core values. We discuss some of the challenges he has faced over the past 30 years of running a business as well as his personal battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He talks openly about a dark period after his initial diagnosis, but how a shift in attitude and mindset and with support from people around him, he tackles the battle with positivity and continues to inspire those around him. Tim is a business leader with the utmost integrity and someone who I and many others in the business community admire and respect.

He has been the Chief Executive of Brighton Dome and Festivals for the past 15 years. During his tenure, he oversaw the transformation of the historic Brighton Dome venue and helped establish Brighton as a leading cultural destination. Under Andrew's leadership, Brighton Dome underwent a major refurbishment, which included the restoration of the Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre, as well as the creation of a new restaurant and bar. This not only modernized the venue but also helped to attract a wider range of performers and events.

This was a fascinating conversation from an incredible leader. We talk about life growing up for Andrew as a gay child in the 70' and 80's and how music, arts and culture helped him find his place. We take a look at his 15 year tenure as CEO of the Dome and festival, the positive impact arts and culture have on Brighton and how he navigated through the challenges of the pandemic. Throughout the whole conversation Andrew's passion for the industry and his role as CEO is clear as we discuss the culture he has created at the Dome, the power of partnerships and community that the festival has established in the city and a look at what is in store for this years festival with guest director Nabihah Iqbal. This is brilliant conversation and insight into the world of arts and culture and Andrew's instrumental role in developing the Brighton Festival into one of the UK's leading arts festivals.

Andrew's rule for living a fulfilled life:

"Optimism and have faith in people'

15 May 2023#E60 From the Brink: An Entrepreneur's Story from Suicide Attempt to Finding Purpose: Rob Goddard01:33:03

⚠️ Warning ⚠️ This episode contains content that may be alarming to some listeners. We do talk about suicide, which we know can be distressing.

This week's episode of the podcast we talk to a truly inspirational entrepreneur, Rob Goddard, as I am joined on this special episode by my co-host, the wonderful Jo Baldwin Trott. Rob is an investor, author, mentor, board advisor and someone that has grown and sold many businesses, but on his journey has faced some tough times that he shares in his book 'Suicide to Success' and today will share with us.

When I started this podcast I wanted to create a space to have truly authentic, open and honest conversations about the entrepreneurial journey, the up's, down's and everything else in between. I have been fortunate enough that my guests have gone deep and shared their highest highs and lowest lows, none more so than Rob Goddard. Rob's inspiring story takes us to a place in his life where he ran away from his problems in the UK, he lost his job, marriage, was in debt and found himself at the top of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai where he had planned to end his life, only a locked fire exit stopped him. Rob discusses his mindset around this time and how a conversation and reaching out to a good friend Alex and asking for help, allowed him to make some changes and rebuild his life. Rob has gone on to build and sell many successful businesses but with clarity and purpose. We talk about success and what that looks like to him now, and the two most important things in life, your health and relationships. With suicide still the biggest killer in men under 45 in the UK, this is why we need to have these conversations and change the narrative that vulnerability and asking for help is brave and sign of strength, NOT weakness. There are so many incredible takeaways from this episode that I would need to write a book to cover them all. I am so grateful to Rob for being such an amazing guest as well as my incredible co-host Jo for helping me record one of the most powerful episodes of the podcast yet..

19 Jun 2023#65 How to Change your Life with the Power of a Growth Mindset: Kyriakos Baxevanis 01:25:18

My guest on the podcast this week is Kyriakos Baxevanis. He is an entrepreneur that spins more plates than me. He is the Co-founder & Managing Director at Little Jasmine Therapies Ltd, Axiom Brighton Limited, The Right People Ltd and the founder of the fabulous Greek Restaurant in Hove, Nostos.

This is a story of what can truly be achieved with self belief, drive and developing a growth mindset. Kyriakos shares his story about life growing up in Greece, the impact of his parents separation at age 9 as well as his decision to go to Canada with his father at age 12 for two and half years. Leaving family and everything he knew to move to a country where he couldn't speak the language, was bullied, faced racism and yet at a young age began to develop skills of resilience and develop a growth mindset that would help to shape his life. He had a dark time in his life when back in Greece he separated from his partner, lost his best friend, lost his job, lost his house and hit rock bottom. Then after making a choice to change his life and create a different path, he came to the UK, slept on his friends floor in Brighton and began to rebuild his life. From working on a chicken counter, whilst doing an MBA, Kyriakos finally got a dream job at American Express and had begun to turn his life around. But this was just the beginning of his entrepreneurial journey.. Some huge takeaways and highlight for me from this inspirational episode:

✅ Lifelong Learning

✅ Develop a growth mindset Be resilient

✅ Be consistent

26 Jun 2023#E66 The Journey of Authentic Resilience: Older, Wiser and Stronger: Gary Peters01:30:38

We round off series 4 this week in style as I catch up with a very good friend of mine and the founder of Authentic Resilience Gary Peters. He is an award winning entrepreneur, winning numerous awards including  Entrepreneur of the year, businessman of the year and greatest contribution to the community, plus the founder of several award winning talent driven organisations including love local jobs.com, love local jobs foundation and ICP Search.

I met Gary many years ago when I first came to Brighton with the salon. He did a talk at the Amex at a networking event and spoke about his journey and how in life we often need a helping hand, someone to give us a leg up, believe in us and create opportunities as someone had done for him. Well over the past decade he has without a doubt been one of those people for me, who has had a profound impact and influence on my life.

I have been fortunate enough to learn so much from Gary over the past 10 years and this episode is packed with so many great insights not just into business but life as well. Gary's talks about life growing up surrounded by unconditional love which gave him the confidence and self belief to grab life's opportunities, knowing that everything will be alright. This is a truly raw and honest conversation as Gary shares about the tough times, the punches, the falls, the failures, including a failed MBO that had a huge impact on him and the company, but has helped to build resilience and get him where he is today, .. We delve into the culture he has created and how he is now ready to take on the second part of his life.

I am so grateful to my good friend for being so honest and open with me.. To quote a movie - "You are my ambassador of Quan mate"

It only took me 4 series, 66 episodes and a 24 hour podcast to get him on, but it was well worth the wait. If you listen to any podcast this week, make sure it's this one.

03 Jul 2023Series 4 Round Up00:35:04

And that as they say is a wrap… Series 4 has come to an end and what a series it has been..

I recorded my 50th episode to kick off the series with the Olympic champion Sally Gunnell, which was pretty epic.. As she touched on how we need to believe in the process, but that you’ve got to know what that process is…

I also had diving silver medallist Leon Taylor on the podcast.. Absolutely fascinating discussing his mindset and visualisation that got him on the podium in 2004.. I am also this Wednesday talking with him at the business leaders breakfast for the Baton of Hope UK suicide prevention and suicide awareness initiative.

There is such a need for this as my conversation with Dad La Souls Dan Flannagan highlighted, with suicide being the biggest killer in men under 45 in the UK.. That is a staggering statistic that needs to change and will only change if … MEN START TALKING more…

Rob Goddard’s episode is a perfect example of this as we went deep as Rob shared with me and my co-host for this episode Jo Baldwin, how he went from nearly throwing himself off the Burge Khalifa to asking for help.. For me it's so important to change the narrative that asking for help isn’t giving up, it’s refusing to give up .. It is not a sign of weakness but of strength and bravery.. Hopefully initiatives like the Baton of Hope will help to change this..

I have had the privilege of having so many incredible conversations in this series and below are some key messages I have taken away:

↗️ Believe in the process, but know what that process is

↗️ A person's success should not be measured by their bank balance

↗️ Go Big or Go Home

↗️ It’s the mindset you need to equip yourself in order to make it in this life

↗️ Give more than you take

↗️ Never take anything for granted

What has been so magical about this series, as my guests have shared their incredible life stories with me, is that the podcast has developed into more than just a business podcast and what we can learn from people's life stories is amazing..

I have some really exciting plans for Series 5 and can not wait to share them with you.

Just wanted to say a huge thanks to our sponsors for series 4 – Plus X, Preston Insurance Brokers, Creative Pod and EMC Corporate Finance as well as our brilliant producers my good friend Martin Leppard, H2 Productions and of course all of you for continuing to listen and support the podcast, it really does mean the world to me..

Finally I’ll leave you with this quote from our final episode of Series 4 and one of my all time favourite episodes with my good friend Gary Peters ~

“Life’s a game of snakes and ladders, you will throw a 6 and occasionally throw a 1, but the game keeps going, just enjoy the ride"

10 Jul 2023In Conversation with Omar Lyefook MBE: THE LIVE SHOW 00:56:44

This week we have a special bonus episode with the County Business TALKS Live Podcast Show from the amazing Soho House, with very special guest Omar Lyefook MBE.

In April 2023 I had the honour of chatting with a music icon with a career spanning 4 decades, a ‘signature’ hit tune that led on to eight solo albums

; collaborations with some of the biggest names in pop music history Stevie Wonder, Leon Ware, Erykah Badu; to name a few]; a catalogue of side-projects more extensive than many artists’ entire working lifetimes; a one-man stage show; and an MBE pinned to his chest by King Charles.

In this fascinating conversation Omar shares his story from life growing up and where his love of music first started to releasing his first album. He shares his incredible friendship and collaboration with music royalty Stevie Wonder and takes us through the many highlights of his career as well as the inspiration behind his music and the classic tune 'There's nothing like this'. We talk about some of the challenges he faced in his career along with the prejudice he faced within the industry. What was clear from the entire conversation was Omar's pure love of music and how thankful he is everyday for the career he has and leaves us with some great advice:

"Life is short so you have got to live it properly"

17 Jul 2023Bonus Episode: Building a Global Branding Agency with James Greenfield #E19/2400:55:56

This week we have a bonus episode from the 24 hour podcast with James Greenfield, the CEO and Co-Founder of branding agency Koto. With 100 designers and strategists across five studios in Berlin, London, Los Angeles, New York and Sydney. The team work with industries impacting the present and startups changing our future including Airbnb, Netflix and Uber.

In this fascinating conversation James takes us through his journey from working at some of London’s leading studios, for the world’s biggest brands to starting Koto 8 years ago and growing it into a global agency. He talks about some of the challenges early on to winning Coca-Cola as a client as well as giving some great insights into what it takes to create an amazing brand. A real key takeaway for me was around the incredible culture James and the team have created at Koto, coming up with their core values early on and taking that into the five studios as they have grown. One of James's key messages really resonated with me about growing your network:

"Don't think about your network as something your growing with an outcome in mind, just keep on making connections cause they will drive things"

Finally James's incredible growth mindset:

"I always live with one foot in presence and one foot in tomorrow, cause the foot in tomorrow drives me not to be overly comfortable in the present"

This is an incredible episode about the world of branding and growing an agency, as well as so many key insights into business.

"Humans are about being together and ultimately our work is about connecting people to ideas, making them believe in those ideas and then using those ideas to drive change"

07 Aug 2023Bonus Episode: Launching a Business from your Kitchen Table with Tom Freyberg #E17/2400:01:47

My guest from the 24 hour podcast this week is Tom Freyberg, Founder & Creative Content Director specialising in water, circular economy & climate-tech. He is a Video storyteller, Podcaster, Speaker & Moderator that founded Atlantean Media in 2018.

This was a brilliant episode that we recorded during the 24 hour podcast while Tom was in Sydney airport waiting to catch a flight. Tom shared his story about his career as a B2B journalist to when in 2018 the company he was working for got taken over and there were talks of redundancy. This was the catalyst for Tom to take the leap and from his kitchen table launch his own business Atlantean Media, which is a global digital content creation company for the environmental engineering industries, specialising in water. He talked about the early stages of growing the business, the impact that the pandemic had just two years after launching and how the business did not just survive but thrive. As a fellow podcast host we talk podcasting and our love for the medium. This episode is a strong reminder that if you are thinking of starting a business or going out on your own that there will be many people that doubt you and often air on the side of caution, but if you believe in yourself and as Tom quotes:

"Instead of thinking about what could go wrong, think about what could go right" ~ Tom Freyberg

13 Aug 2023Making a Career out of Playing with Speakers and Lights: with Martin Leppard #14/2400:53:26

My guest from the 24 hour podcast this week is our very own podcast producer, founder of H2 Productions, the one and only Martin Leppard. When Martin was at school his teacher said to him.

"You'll never make a career out of playing with speakers and lights"

Now after over two decades of working in events and "playing with speakers and light", after founding H2 Productions, Martin and his team have produced everything from a one man band at the Prince of Wales Pub to 30,000 people on Brighton Seafront with Fat Boy Slim, from festivals to GQ fashion week at Elton Johns house as well as producing some amazing podcasts, including this one. We recorded this episode while Martin was thousands of miles away yet still instructing his team on the production of the 24 hour podcast. We talked about his mindset around March 2020 when he saw his pipeline of work just fall off a cliff, but how he not only survived but has thrived coming out of the pandemic and continued to grow the business. We delve deep into what is really behind the glitz and glamour of events and get a real life behind the scenes insight into what really goes on.

Not only is this a great episode and insight into the events industry but on a personal note, getting to know Martin and work with him over the past year, I can say first hand what a complete professional he is and a joy to work with. He has not only become a business associate but a good friend as well and I look forward to working with him and the team more in the years ahead as we continue to grow the podcast.

21 Aug 2023Bonus Episode: Building a Multi Million $$$ Company from Scratch: The Story of Brandwatch #E9/24 Giles Palmer00:54:37

My Guest this week was our headline speaker at the live event of the 24 hour podcast. Giles Palmer, the Founder of Brandwatch a digital consumer intelligence company.  A company he started from scratch in 2006 and has grown over the past 15 years to £100 million revenue with over 500 staff, with offices globally.  In 2021 they sold to Cision for $450 Million to continue with its ambitions for large scale growth. This is a truly amazing Sussex Success story and was honoured to have Giles on.

This was a true highlight for me to have the opportunity to have this conversation with Giles during the 24 hour podcast challenge. We talked about his early entrepreneurial ventures with his first business that despite raising £1.5 million in funding, he had to close down and lost £25,000. Giles describes how this had lit the entrepreneurial spark in him and how he finally in 2006 came to start Brandwatch, where he grew into a global company. He gives an insight into the importance of building a strong culture as well as so many key takeaways for anyone looking to start a business. I absolutely loved this conversation and below are some of my key takeaways:

⭕️ You need to have insane amounts of optimism and resilience 🧢

🟥 If you don't dream it, it won't happen 🧢

🔺 Take one step at a time, keep going and it's amazing how far you can go 🧢

18 Sep 2023An Introduction to Different Hats with Sam Thomas and Gareth Dimelow00:55:25

This week ahead of the first episode release of the Newley branded Different Hats podcast I wanted to introduce the podcast, explain the change and some of the principles and purpose behind it. I couldn't do this alone so am joined by my good friend and co founder of Inside Stories the brilliant Gareth Dimelow.

The podcast has evolved into something so much more than I had ever imagined, it is where I believe I have found my true Ikigai and therefore wanted to give it its own identity, hence the rebrand. In this episode we discussed:

⭕️ What we can learn from listening to peoples stories

🟥 What is Multiple Persona Disorder?

🔺 How we can measure Success

My mission with the podcast is clear, I want to help the world to see success differently so that a persons success is not measured by their financial status. This podcast is for entrepreneurs who feel like they have to be all things to all people, Different Hats is a storytelling champion that liberates business owners from their multiple persona disorder. Unlike other podcasters, Different Hats helps the world see success differently by evolving beyond the performative side of entrepreneurialism and helping people build the business they want out of the business they’ve got and achieve true happiness and fulfilment. I hope you will join me on the journey.

25 Sep 2023#E67 Unlocking Success: From the Trading floor to Professional Footballer: The Paul Rogers Story01:26:18

Welcome to the launch of Series 5 of the podcast and I could not think of a better guest than the one and only 'Dodge', Paul Rogers. He has worn many different hats throughout his career from commodities trader to professional footballer, commercial manager at BHAFC to business consultant. He is one of the most connected men in Sussex and someone I am lucky to call a close friend.

This was such a fascinating conversation about Dodge's story from growing up and learning the importance of a strong work ethic and taking that into every part of his career. We discuss his early years as a city trader to getting the call from Sheffield United Manager Dave Bassett. We talk about imposter syndrome when at 26 you sign a professional football contract, the next minute you're playing against John Barnes and Jamie Redknapp and watching yourself on Match of the Day, but how he learnt to adapt and adapt quickly. We delve into his time after football as commercial manager at BHAFC to leaving the club after 18 years prior to them being promoted to the premier league. He shares some great stories from his amazing football career and some of the lessons he has learnt on the way that has held him in good stead in life and in business.

Three Key lessons:

⭕️ Develop a strong work ethic

🟥 Learn to adapt and adapt quickly

🔺 Always be moving forward

This really is an episode you will not want to miss.

02 Oct 2023#E68: Creating your Happy Place in Business: The Inspiring Story of Retail Entrepreneur Emma Draper01:17:28

This week I welcome the inspirational retail entrepreneur Emma Draper to the podcast. She is the current Sussex and Surrey Business women of the year and someone that has grown her retail store Velvet in Hove into a multimillion pound business.

I met Emma earlier this year and was quite literally blown away by her story. Her positivity, energy and optimism is infectious, if you view the Velvet instagram page you will get a glimpse of what she has created and why it is her happy place.

During this fascinating conversation we talk about life growing up and being surrounded by entrepreneurial parents, and how getting the gift from them of being able to talk to people become her superpower in business and in life. We discuss some of the challenges she has faced both in business and her personal life over the past two decades, through recession, a global pandemic, illness and divorce, and how in 2015 she changed every aspect of the business to grow it into the huge success it is today. We delve into the culture she has created, empowering her team and those around her to try things, make mistakes, learn and develop. The culture isn't just restricted to her team, but flows through every aspect of the business to all the customers, suppliers and everyone that is part of Velvet family and that is why it is her happy place, and as she says "Velvet literally runs through my veins".

Three Key lessons:

⭕️ The importance of a strong work ethic

🟥 Look after people and your customers and they'll look after you

🔺 Without our health we have nothing

This really is an incredible and inspirational episode.

09 Oct 2023#E69 The Power of Breaking your Silence: The Story of Perry Power01:22:41

 Warning: Viewer Discretion Advised

This episode contains content that may be alarming to some listeners. We do talk about intrafamilial child sexual abuse, which we know can be distressing.

If you have concerns about the content or its potential impact, please seek support from a trusted friend, family member, or professional.

This week I welcome the truly inspiring Perry Power to the podcast. Ranking up over 60M video views and 300k followers on social media, Perry Power raises awareness of intrafamilial child sexual abuse and inspires survivors to break their silence. Perry is a philanthropist, writer, speaker, and coach, with a passion for telling stories that need to be told. Perry's latest book, Breaking The Silence, reached the #1 spot on Amazon for Sexual Abuse and Mental Health. I was joined on this very special episode by my co-host the wonderful Jo Baldwin.

I first heard Perry talk at the Acumen business convention and was blown away by his story, but having the opportunity to go a little deeper was so powerful and inspiring, he is a truly remarkable young man. I went into this episode with some assumptions as to how Perry would answer certain questions, especially our Life in 60 seconds questions, but what was clear from this incredible individual was that what happened to him as a child does not define him, his drive, vision, self belief and self awareness was simply inspiring to see. We do talk about when he was abused and the strength he showed to speak out about it and how breaking his silence has helped so many others around the world do the same.

Three Key lessons:

⭕️ Do not let a situation or incident define who you are

🟥 Have self belief and be unavailable for any other option

🔺Have a vision and do not derail from that path, take the hits and keep moving forward

This a truly powerful, incredible and inspirational episode and I loved his definition of success.

16 Oct 2023#E70 From Teenage Trauma to Motor Racing Success: The Inspiring Story of Jade Goodwin01:43:35

 Warning: Viewer Discretion Advised

This episode contains content that may be alarming to some listeners. We do talk about sexual abuse, depression and mental health which we know can be distressing.

If you have concerns about the content or its potential impact, please seek support from a trusted friend, family member, or professional.

This week I welcome motor racing sensation Jade Goodwin to the podcast. From Karting to Fiesta's she is an unbelievable talent on the circuit and at just 24 she has already won the F100 British Open Championship, x 3 FA 95 Vicechamp 2020/21/23 and many more.

We start Jade's story from when she first found her love for motor racing at the age of 10 and how the sport she loves has given her so much. However in her personal life Jade has been through an incredible ordeal, she shares with me a traumatic period of her life when she was sexually abused at age just 15. How she kept it quiet for so long before breaking her silence only a few years ago. In this episode she speaks openly, honestly and vulnerably about her abuse and how difficult that period was, affecting her mental health and taking her to some dark places. But she talks about how motor racing helped her in her darkest hour and how she has come out the other side fighting. Her bravery, resilience, self awareness and humility are simply awe inspiring and I was truly blown away by this incredible young woman and her powerful story, as I know anyone listening to this episode will be.

23 Oct 2023#71 Kicking The S**T Out of Cancer: The Inspirational Story of Marcos Jarvis01:11:35

Statistics state that 1-2 people will get diagnosed with Cancer in the UK. In 2019 nearly 400,000 people were diagnosed with cancer, one of those people is my guest this week, the incredible Marcos Jarvis. He is a Dad, husband, storyteller, bespoke builder, ultra athlete, runner and Cancer survivor. This is a story of resilience, self belief and never giving up..

In this powerful episode Marcos shares with us and talks about the day him and his wife were given the devastating news that he has stage 4 incurable cancer and given a matter of weeks to live. With the thought that he would not make it to his son's 5th birthday, Marcos went on a journey to change all aspects of his life and face cancer head on. Through diet, exercise, extreme hot and cold water therapy, with support from his wife and the Wolo Foundation along with the most incredible mindset, Marcos did just that and beat cancer. He went from running just a few hundred meters to ultra marathons, running thousands of miles and completing a full marathon during chemo therapy. He fully embraced the Wim Hoff method and is now trained as a Wim Hoff instructor. Marcos also shares how he has taken full responsibility for his own cancer. This is one of the most powerful, emotional episode's I have recorded and with so many incredible takeaways for anyone in a tough place, showing what can be achieved when you have a strong why, a powerful mindset, self belief and the ability to never give up. Four years on I am delighted to share that Marcos is now cancer free.
