21 Apr 2024017: Behind the Facade: Impacts of Government Regulations on Home Construction with Shane Wenzel00:47:56

Get ready for another episode of 'Dialogue over Division' as we welcome Shane Wenzel, President & CEO of the Shane Homes Group of Companies. With years of experience navigating the intricacies of development and housing, Shane brings a wealth of knowledge about this subject that often seems overwhelming for the average citizen.

In this episode, we dive deep into the impact of government policies on the housing market. Shane has been involved in providing policy advice and publicly shedding light on how government regulations impact the homebuilding process. One key takeaway from our discussion? Despite the rhetoric and photo ops, it's clear that no level of government is directly involved in building homes. Instead, they contribute by crafting rules and regulations that can either facilitate or impede home construction and consequently the housing market.

Particularly striking is municipalities' approach to understanding housing development complexities. Whether they're in over their heads or simply misinterpreting the nuances, municipalities seem to struggle to grasp their role and jurisdiction, the realities of development, and the direct impact it has on the housing market.

Join us for this episode, airing just in time for Calgary's big town hall on April 22, 2024, where the topic of blanket rezoning will be in the spotlight. We're here to equip you with the knowledge and insights you need to navigate these crucial conversations and fulfill your civic responsibility. Don't miss out - tune in for an insightful discussion with Shane Wenzel!

07 Apr 2024015: Youth in Action: Alexa Posa's Civic Engagement Journey00:53:20

Welcome to another episode of Dialogue over Division. In today's installment, we're excited to introduce Alexa Posa, a young lady who embodies the essence of proactive citizenship. Alexa's civic journey commenced unexpectedly when she was suspended from college due to not disclosing her vaccine status. Rather than sit back passively, Alexa took matters into her own hands. She made the decision to engage civically, seizing every opportunity to attend events, talk to others and try to find some answers. Driven by her curiosity about Edmonton's 15-minute city policies, Alexa took steps to gain clarity about the city's proposals. She organized meetups and arranged interviews with city councillors and other city officials, in an effort to gain clarity on behalf of her community. Indeed, Alexa is a shining example of seizing opportunities and refusing to wait for others to take action. She underscores the simple truth that all it takes to be a citizen journalist is a phone and probing questions. So, let's take Alexa's example, pick up our phones, pose some tough questions, and witness the impact we can collectively make. I look forward to witnessing Alexa's continued journey, and I hope her story inspires you to play an active role in fostering positive change within your own community. 30 Mar 2025037: Holding Power to Account: Ray McGinnis on Protests, Investigations & Justice01:18:15

In this episode of Dialogue Over Division, we sit down with Ray McGinnis, an author, educator, and commentator known for his critical examinations of government narratives. Ray has spent years exploring issues of government transparency and public accountability. His books, “Unanswered Questions: What the September Eleventh Families Asked and the 9/11 Commission Ignored” and “Unjustified: The Freedom Convoy, The Emergencies Act, And The Inquiry That Got It Wrong,” scrutinize official investigations and challenge the narratives surrounding pivotal historical events.

Together, Eva and Ray discuss the Public Order Emergency Commission (POEC) and its striking parallels to the 9/11 Commission. Ray discusses how the evidence presented at the POEC demonstrated that Freedom Convoy participants remained peaceful, yet the government still invoked the Emergencies Act. They explore the federal court ruling that found the government’s actions to be overreach, the political influences in the Coutts trials, and the broader implications for Canada’s judiciary and democratic institutions. From media portrayals of the Freedom Convoy to the societal impact of government responses to protest movements, this conversation raises crucial questions about accountability, justice, and the integrity of government investigations and actions.

At a time when trust in institutions is being challenged, questioning official narratives and demanding transparency isn’t just important—it’s necessary. If governments can so easily overstep their authority without consequence, what does that mean for the future of democracy? Join us for this discussion that underscores the role of citizens in holding governments to account and ensuring our fundamental freedoms are protected.

31 Dec 2024032: Calling It Like It Is: Martyupnorth on Accountability and Leadership01:12:58

In this episode, Marty Belanger, widely known as "Martyupnorth," joins the conversation. His viral #TrudeauMustGo post ignited a nationwide discussion, but Marty is far more than an online voice. A hardworking, self-made Canadian who retired early thanks to his hard work and success, Marty would much rather be hiking in the woods. Yet, seeing the government overstep its bounds compelled him to speak out. His focus on financial accountability and straight-shooting commentary resonates with Canadians looking for leadership and solutions.

We dive into the importance of honesty, leadership, and open-mindedness in tackling Canada’s biggest challenges. From the healthcare system to immigration, we explore what defines effective leadership and the role of critical thinking in creating meaningful change. We also confront the challenges of online criticism and discuss how to engage in constructive dialogue while holding political leaders accountable for their actions.

Marty acknowledged that younger generations often seem disengaged from politics and the decisions shaping their future. We discuss why this might be and explore how we can encourage youth to get more involved and take ownership of Canada’s direction.

What do you think? How can we inspire youth to get involved and take ownership of Canada’s direction? Share your ideas—we need fresh perspectives to make this happen.

10 Mar 2024012: Embracing Disagreement: A Dialogue with Max Fawcett01:24:16

In our latest episode of Dialogue Over Division, columnist Max Fawcett and I discussed a myriad of topics, including the evolving landscape of mainstream media, the impact of technology, divisive politics, government's role, and the effectiveness of public health responses during the pandemic.

Despite initial hesitation stemming from past differences and Max's critical remarks of me, I extended an invitation to him precisely because of our divergent perspectives. One item we both wholeheartedly agreed on is that it is important to elevate the level of civic engagement in this country

Through it all, our dialogue emphasized the importance of engaging in meaningful conversations, even with those we disagree with. I hope this episode serves as a reminder that shutting out differing voices risks not only failing ourselves but also our communities. Dialogue, even amid disagreement, remains essential for progress and unity.

Tune in to our episode with Max Fawcett, as it turns out, it wasn't as disagreeable as I had expected. Enjoy!

21 Jul 2024024: Civil Duty and Civic Disobedience: Marco Van Huigenbos's Story01:16:00

In this episode of Dialogue Over Division, we spoke with Marco Van Huigenbos. Marco immigrated from the Netherlands to rural Alberta in 1996, building a life centered around farming, business, and family. At 26, driven by his dedication to his community, Marco ran for municipal council.

Marco provides examples of some of the issues he was involved with while in his role, and he also shares the frustrations he faced and complexities he encountered. He describes how public officials on a local level are held to account more readily due to the smaller area they are charged with. He had citizens approaching and asking him questions at the grocery store highlighting the importance of governance and accountability at local levels.

As government officials mismanaged C0vid, Marco felt that citizens' voices were being ignored. This frustration led him to participate in the Coutts protest as a form of civil disobedience. His participation resulted in a charge six months later and ultimately his conviction. On July 22, he will be arraigned in connection with this matter.

Marco's journey invites us to consider the importance of civic engagement in ensuring that every citizen's voice is heard, despite the challenges and frustrations that come with holding the government accountable. If we don't know about the problems, we cannot fix them. Marco's involvement exposes some of these issues.

Listen now and share your thoughts on this crucial topic. Do you see Marco as a criminal or a dedicated citizen striving to be heard?

30 Mar 2024014: Driving Civic Participation: Landon Johnston and the Recall Gondek Campaign00:41:50

Welcome to another episode of "Dialogue over Division" with Landon Johnston, the driving force behind the hugely successful Recall Gondek petition. When I say "successful," I'm referring to how the Recall Gondek petition has ignited civic engagement in Calgary, something all Canadians should take note of. Regardless of whether the petition achieves its goal, citizens of Calgary are sending a message to elected officials and are actively participating in democracy.

For those who may not be familiar, Jyoti Gondek is the mayor of Calgary. With her approval rating at an all-time low and her advocacy for controversial policies affecting Calgarians, Landon recognized the widespread disapproval and felt compelled to take action.

It's worth noting that Landon is a tradesman—an ordinary, good-hearted, and honest individual who saw an issue and decided to act. Motivated by his concern for justice and fairness, he launched the Recall Gondek petition, which quickly gained momentum. However, Landon and his team have faced numerous hurdles and endured many attacks along the way, from navigating administrative hurdles to responding to vandalized signs. But nothing stopped them.

At a time when civic engagement is more crucial than ever, initiatives like the Recall Gondek petition highlight the importance of ordinary citizens actively participating in the democratic process. It demonstrates how individuals like Landon can effect change and hold elected officials accountable. It is worth noting that Mayor Gondek has already accounted that she will not be seeking re-election, this is not a coincidence.

In my view, to ensure our democracy remains robust, we should actively encourage civic engagement. So, what are you waiting for? You have four more days to get involved! 18 Aug 2024026: Reimagining Government: A Conversation with Adrian Brown00:56:00

On this episode of Dialogue over Division, we are excited to welcome Adrian Brown, Executive Director of the Centre for Public Impact. With over 20 years of experience in government performance and transformation, Adrian holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a Master of Arts in Management Studies from the University of Cambridge. He brings a deep understanding of the complexities of governance and a passion for fostering innovation and resilience in government through strategic long-term thinking.

In our conversation, Adrian shares his vision for better governance, emphasizing the need to foster an informed and engaged citizenry. We explore how addressing social issues requires acknowledging their complexity and striving for resolution rather than perfection, recognizing that each of us plays a part in the solution. We also discuss the difficulties of being a public figure in today’s polarized environment, where leaders often face intense scrutiny. While this scrutiny is necessary, it can sometimes hinder innovation and bold decision-making in government. Adrian believes that through strategic long-term thinking and learning from failures, we can build a more resilient public sector that not only withstands these pressures but thrives under them.

As we navigate these ideas, it’s essential to consider: How can we, as citizens, contribute to a governance system that is not just reactive but proactive in addressing the needs of all? What role do we play in ensuring that our government remains accountable and responsive to the evolving challenges of our time? Adrian’s insights challenge us to embrace our shared responsibility in shaping the future of governance, emphasizing that while the path may not always be easy, it is one we must commit to together.

Join us as we delve into these critical topics and discuss how we can collectively work towards a more effective, transparent, and resilient government.

01 Sep 2024027: Inside the Police Line: Kelly Donovan’s Story of Whistleblowing and Retaliation01:08:01

Welcome to another episode of Dialogue over Division with Kelly Donovan, a former police officer and the author of Police Line: Do Not Cross: Silencing a Canadian Police Whistleblower. Kelly's remarkable story is a testament to standing up against entrenched, broken systems that often prioritize self-preservation over public welfare. Her experiences highlight the secrecy and fear within policing culture, that should be concerning to all citizens. Despite reaching out to various government officials for help, Kelly faced retaliation as a whistleblower, with many in power choosing to turn a blind eye.

Yet, in the face of injustice, Kelly didn't back down; she took action. Witnessing systemic issues in how police handled internal matters, she joined the force to get involved and gain insight. When confronted with legal injustices, she equipped herself with knowledge and successfully challenged high-powered lawyers in court. Kelly didn’t just stand her ground—she leveled up.

Kelly’s experiences underscore a critical lesson: when we ignore injustice and fail to act, problems become entrenched, and real progress stalls. To keep our democratic system strong and effective, we must confront power head-on and demand accountability. Kelly’s story is a powerful reminder that each of us has the capacity to effect change, and it is our collective responsibility to do so.

02 Feb 2025034: Multiculturalism & Justice Maret Jaks on Confronting Systemic Failures01:04:03

In this deeply challenging and thought-provoking episode of Dialogue over Division, we sit down with Maret Jaks to confront the harrowing issue of gang rapes in the UK. Together, we delve into the systemic failures of elected officials and police that have allowed these crimes to persist, examining the complex interplay of multiculturalism, political accountability, and justice.

Maret draws on her extensive background in advocating for women’s rights and identifying systemic weaknesses to provide incisive analysis and a passion for critical thinking in this vital conversation. She offers valuable insights into protecting vulnerable individuals while fostering meaningful dialogue about difficult and often uncomfortable topics.

We explore the challenges of addressing multiculturalism with respect and nuance. While cultural diversity enriches our societies, it also requires careful balance to ensure the rights and safety of all citizens are upheld. Together, we discuss ways to hold systems accountable without vilifying communities, focusing instead on solutions that prioritize justice, equality, and transparency.

The conversation expands beyond the UK, reflecting on the implications these issues have for Canada and other nations. We examine the media’s role in covering—or sometimes neglecting—these crises, the failures of authorities to act, and the justice system’s troubling inconsistencies. Additionally, we discuss how Canada can preserve its values of equality and respect within a multicultural framework.

This episode is also a reminder of how extraordinary life in the West can be. Canada, and the West more broadly, offers some of the best places to live because of their foundation on the ideals of equal rights and opportunities for all. We, as citizens of these societies, have a responsibility to uphold these ideals, ensure they are not eroded, and foster a culture where they are respected and reciprocated by all. Above all else, it is imperative that we retain the courage and freedom to call attention to crimes and systemic issues, resisting any pressure to remain silent, or we risk losing everything.

Let’s work together to keep it that way. To do so, we must have open and honest conversations, free of shame or fear, and seek to build a brighter future by drawing on all of our cultural strengths. Only by speaking openly and fairly can we find common ground and strengthen our shared commitment to justice and inclusion.

To dive deeper into Maret’s insights and the foundation of her concerns, explore her book, Notes from a Blonde: Why This "Anything Goes!" Multiculturalism Has to Go (https://www.amazon.ca/Notes-Blonde-This-Anything-Multiculturalism/dp/1988470072). 22 Sep 2024028: The Future of Local Politics: A Conversation with Doug Main00:55:00

In this episode, Doug Main, Vice President of Communications for PACE ( Principled, Accountable Coalition for Edmonton), joins us to discuss the crucial role of municipal governance in shaping our communities. Doug highlights the importance of common sense, fiscally responsible, and accountable decision-making at the local level, emphasizing how municipalities provide essential services that directly impact our daily lives.

From the cost-effectiveness of net-zero buildings to the practicality of electric buses, Doug addresses concerns about whether certain initiatives are truly serving the public interest. He emphasizes the need for greater transparency and public engagement, noting that informed and active citizens are key to holding local governments accountable.

Doug introduces the concept of political parties at the municipal level, a role PACE hopes to fulfill by offering voters more clarity and choice. While the regulatory framework for municipal parties is still evolving, he explains how these parties could be established in a way similar to provincial regulations. Doug also shares PACE’s plans for organizing, calling for "pace setters" in each ward to take leadership roles and build strong local associations.

He stresses the importance of civic involvement, encouraging people to attend PACE’s information meetings to learn how they can help drive change. His message is clear: if you want to see meaningful improvements in your community, you need to get involved and make your voice heard.

As you listen, ask yourself: When was the last time you reached out to your local representative or attended a City Council meeting? Civic engagement doesn’t have to be overwhelming—it can start with a simple conversation, a question, or an idea. Everyday citizens, just like you, can make a lasting impact on their communities. And remember, the first step toward change is getting involved!
