25 Dec 2024Storytime and Modern Validation [E166]00:26:03

Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech

Matt Fanslow starts out reminiscing about a close call involving his Dad's "cardiac" event. He then brings up raising a son with ADHD and IED, and how he and his wife go to therapy together to learn how to better help him. He then weaves together some stories about his childhood and how validation worked for him, to then compare to modern times, and how there's little way for younger generations to actually be able to have such experiences; which leads to us needing to change our validation tactics.

16 Mar 2022Circuit Loading With Sean Tipping - Matt Fanslow Diagnosing the Aftermarket A to Z [E022]01:16:47

We're talking about loading these circuits, stressing them out, making them do what they were designed or maybe even a little bit beyond.

  • Need bulbs to insert a load on a circuit
  • That's a visual representation that the current control that's the best.
  • Frame rusted-out conditions are a challenge. Frames can lose ground.
  • Sean: That's what I like about electricity. It plays by a set of rules that have to be, and as long as you understand those rules, you can win
  • Sean: Is it just voltage? Is it data, or is this for an output? Is this something that's doing work? We've got to treat it differently. We've got to test it differently. That's where the choice comes into play, but you got to understand the purpose of the circuit before you can do that
  • If we're looking at a fuel pump and we're cycling on and off on and off with a key or with some sort of a device, or a switch. Where we hit the fuel pump a few times to start it spinning that if it's rated for, we'll just say, it's fused for 20 amps, you'll see spikes 40 amps, no problem over and over and over and over and over and over.
  • Because the fuses don't necessarily blow from the actual amps. It's the heat. So I need some time, which I know that statement kind of sounds almost like an oxymoron, but it needs time to build up the heat to blow. Heat blows a fuse heat created by the current flow, and the current is not there long enough to pop the fuse. So a lazy test, you want to replace a fuel pump or you're suspicious of a fuel pump got low pressure, and you want to verify power feeding grounds. If you're lazy like me, you're not raising the vehicle up and checking for power feeding ground at the fuel pump connector. You're taking your low amp, current probe in your lab scope, and you're hitting the fuel pump over and over and over.
  • Don't do it just once or twice do it like 20 times, 30 times, just bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
  • Do you really think there might be a bad ground to the frame rail? Probably not. That's a great way to look at it is to really, really stress that circuit.
  • We're talking about loading these circuits, stressing them out, making them do what they were designed or maybe even a little bit beyond.
  • So the heat that's developed in a conductor, like a cable or wire or a fuse.
  • I learned so much about just sitting for a few minutes in the driver's seat with the scan tool and looking at data and looking at pertinent data and just kind of thinking about how, how it works.

01 Nov 2023Psychology of Refusal to Evolve with Bryan Pollock [E107]01:05:09

"We're going to talk about loss aversion, which risk aversion is essentially you don't want to risk anything, right? You don't like uncertainty, and you're willing to lose out big due to uncertainty and miscalculation. Loss aversion is when human beings really are essentially wired to dislike the loss of anything more than they like the gain of anything. It's more painful to lose something than gain it in the first place."

"The tech's been working there for like a decade, so they have ten years invested. And their sunk cost fallacy is I have all this time invested here; I can't leave."

Matt Fanslow and Bryan Pollock discuss the increasing role of technology in auto repair, the importance of following manufacturer guidelines, the need for a dedicated technology specialist, and the psychological aspects of decision-making in the industry, touching on loss aversion and the sunk cost fallacy.

06 Dec 2023Professionalism...And Maybe a Movie Reference [E112]00:30:51

Recently, Matt and his wife, Danielle, embarked on a kitchen renovation journey. Danielle, like many customers, feared being taken advantage of during the process. These concerns may seem illogical to some, but the fear of not getting our money's worth is real and relatable.

While listening to Danielle's worries, Matt was reminded of the movie "My Fair Lady." The character is willing to pay a shilling to learn how to speak eloquently. While a shilling may be insignificant to some, it represents a significant portion of the character's financial worth. It's all about understanding what services or products mean to different individuals.

This extends to the automotive industry - empathy and understanding toward customers' financial situations is crucial. Clear communication and setting realistic expectations are key. As professionals, let's strive to not just under-promise and over-deliver, but align expectations with the actual outcome.

  • Setting realistic expectations in kitchen renovations and vehicle repairs (00:11:00) The importance of setting realistic expectations in both kitchen renovations and vehicle repairs, and the potential challenges that may arise.
  • Lack of Professionalism and Empathy (00:26:21) Exploring the importance of being empathetic towards customers and delivering a professional level of service.
  • Building Reputation and Demonstrating Quality (00:27:18) Highlighting the significance of small gestures, such as returning the vehicle in good condition, building a positive reputation, and demonstrating the quality of service provided.

Highlighting Caitlin Clark's exceptional impact on women's sports, Matt discusses how her achievements should be celebrated rather than downplayed. Introduction:

  • Fuel trims are a common topic in professional forums, classes, and diagnostics, often leading to bold diagnostic decisions.
  • Matt shares his experience of quickly diagnosing vehicle issues using fuel trims, even before leaving the parking lot.

Key Challenges in Discussing Fuel Trims:

  • The more you learn about fuel trims, the more nuanced and complex the topic becomes.
  • It’s difficult to generalize fuel trim behavior across all vehicles, as each system has unique characteristics.
  • Fuel trims are just one piece of data that must be factored into a broader diagnostic process.

What Are Fuel Trims?

  • Definition: Fuel trims are adjustments made to the base fuel schedule by the engine control unit (ECU).
  • Matt credits Matt Ragsdale on iATN for one of the best explanations he’s seen.

Two Primary Fuel Systems:

  1. Speed Density Systems:

  • Relies on the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor and engine RPM as primary inputs.
  • Engine control algorithms tend to be more complex.

  1. Mass Airflow (MAF) Systems:

  • Uses the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) and crank sensor (RPM) as primary inputs.
  • Simpler in design compared to speed density systems.
  • Modern systems often blend elements of both speed density and MAF systems.

Closing Thoughts:

  • Matt emphasizes the importance of understanding the nuances of fuel trims and how they vary across different vehicle systems.
  • He plans to dive deeper into the topic in future episodes, providing more detailed insights and practical examples.

09 Mar 2022When You are the Owner, Nobody Stops You From Making Bad Decisions - Nathan Bryant [E021]00:55:08

When You are the Owner, Nobody Stops You From Making Bad Decisions - Nathan Bryant

  • What Nathan thought he was going to do, wasn't how it worked out when he opened his shop.
  • He was doing brakes for soccer moms and had very little diagnosis.
  • His first two years were challenging to say the least
  • He thought he knew how a shop worked from a mangers perspective. It is different when you are the owner.
  • When you are the owner, nobody stops you from making bad decisions.
  • He realized he had to get his ego out of the way.
  • Things change, not for the better or worse; they change
  • The change that happens when you go from being the technician to being the service writer. Or when you go from being the service writer to the service manager. Or when you go from being the technician to the owner. And then all of a sudden, you're the technician, the service writer, the service manager, the janitor, the accounts receivable, the accounts payable, the bookkeeper and the repairman.
  • I will pay good money for people that can do things that I can not do.  Web design, my lawyer, my accountant. These are people that can largely charge me.
  • It's more education. Management classes. It's getting them to places like Vision KC  where they're going to learn something,
  • I was talking to a person who's the head of Lincoln tech. And she was saying we need to start talking to kids in the sixth grade about becoming auto mechanics.
  • Nathan and Matt love to solve puzzles
  • Solving problems are fun
  • And if we can get that across to, you know, six, seventh, eighth graders, you know what, maybe we get somebody excited about this because the jobs, are not the same as they were 20 years ago, it's not anywhere near as dirty, and it's not anywhere near as greasy.  We get to be software engineers sometimes now.
  • The key of everything is education, and we need to educate ourselves.
  • We let things build up because we are afraid to confront them. When you do you have to be willing to hear things you may not want to hear, which could be criticism of you, and you must be willing to accept it and then decide if it is valid. You may own part of the problem.
  • Many people are not comfortable with conflict and dealing with your shortcomings.
  • Clear lines of communications and job expectations, both ways, are necessary

  • 41% of first marriages end in divorce, 60% of second marriages end in divorce, and 73% of third marriages end in divorce.
  • Up to 70% of divorces are initiated by the wife, and when in a couple, the wife is college educated, that number drops and jumps to up to 90% of divorces initiated by the wife.
  • Who regrets a divorce after it happens? 39% of men regret a divorce compared to only 27% of women.
  • Most couples are waiting too long to seek some type of help with their marriage.
  • Divorce men are 2.5 times more likely than married men to commit suicide and 8 times more likely to commit suicide than divorced women.
  • 66% of men name their wives as their primary social support, 21% name friends, and 10% say they have no one at all.

  • Couples in unhappy relationships spend all their time looking at the other person and not enough time looking at themselves.
  • You have two different people in a relationship with two different sets of thoughts and feelings, and needs. It is possible for one person in that relationship to feel good about the relationship and think everything's okay or good enough, and it is possible for the other person to be downright miserable.
  • Imagine the most recent fight you had with your spouse or negative interaction- if you remove yourself from that scenario and were to put someone else in your place, and it was like you were watching a movie, how would you feel towards that person who's playing you? Would you like what you see? Could you stand by those actions? What are the parts of what they're saying that are true?

23 Feb 2022What Does a Great Steak Restaurant and Auto Repair Have in Common? [E019]00:27:38
  • We compare the automotive to health care. Ever think of comparing us to Chef’s or Cook’s?
  • I'm watching an episode of a master chef with my daughter
  • The speed, efficiency, economy, and emotion that these professional chefs displayed and the contestants could not keep up was very glaringly obvious.
  • The fastest texts that come to mind that I've personally witnessed. And I mean, I know some are just insanely fast out there, and I've never seen them work, but the ones that I've seen firsthand, and it's not the terrible many, but the ones I've seen, that's the other thing. They work soul clean.
  • Everything laid out in a certain way is very orderly, which helps proficiency, efficiency, and quality. That's exactly what I was watching on this cooking show.
  • You do not have to have a license to be a chef. Education helps, and of course, experience helps.
  • But you can go into a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, have a brilliant cook back there, and have a great steak.
  • A brilliant chef can go to a hole-in-the-wall shop and have a very smart or capable, skilled technician work on their vehicle. And you would never know other than maybe Google ratings or Yelps or something of that nature and word of mouth, or randomly right.
  • And if you had good luck. it's five years, and they are your mechanic, and they've always come through for you, and you're referring people to them.
  • There is a difference between shops with different labor rates, like steak restaurants.
  • If you have the investment in the facility, people, tools, and equipment, why not be sure your customer understands that they are getting quality, just like you’d get at a high end restaurant
  • We often compare ourselves to the health care industry.  Maybe thinking about quality food and customer experience at a restaurant will help us better explain and relate our pricing and services to our customer.

The gang’s all here; we have the entire Aftermarket Radio Network together for an important episode inspired by the movie Moneyball. We all have experience with people who are not our top performers, but are we better to have them on the team than not? You know them; they are consistent, reliable, steady, and contributors. Are they worth replacing? Will they become the best or top performers, or do they help strengthen our overall performance? A great discussion among your peers.

"In the world of automotive repair, specialization can be key to success." Elijah McMillan, shares his journey into key programming. Interestingly, he took over from mobile locksmiths, opting out of car-related services, a reminder that knowing your niche and capabilities is vital.

Elijah also works on Hybrid vehicles. He's specialized in hybrid repair, particularly with the Toyota Prius. Adding keys to these vehicles might seem daunting, but it’s an integral part of servicing hybrids.

Did you know that dealers often sell keys at a loss? Elijah McMillan shone a light on this surprising fact. Locksmiths can carve out a lucrative space in the market by strategically stocking fobs and utilizing the right tools, like the OTIS system for Volkswagens. Efficiency and preparedness can turn challenges into profitable opportunities.

02 Apr 2025Mailbag Episode: Multimeters, Electrical Diagnostics and Drivability Tricks [E180]00:31:32

Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech

Matt Fanslow dives into listener-submitted questions, covering:

  • Multimeter recommendations (why he prefers insulation testers/meggers over basic DMMs).
  • Electrical diagnostic strategies (schematics, scan tools, and stress-testing circuits).
  • The "Flat Rate Test Drive" (a drivability diagnostic trick for load/PID analysis).
  • Gaming picks (Elden Ring, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Days Gone Remaster).
  • Scan tool advice for techs doing more drivability work.

Timestamps:

(00:00) – Intro

(02:33)Multimeter recommendations: Why Matt avoids basic DMMs and prefers:

  • Fluke 1587 or Pico TA467 (insulation testers for EVs/future-proofing).
  • Used Vantage/Vantage Pro (graphing + scope functions).
  • Curien (Bluetooth-enabled multimeter).

(11:44)Electrical diagnostic process:

  1. Start with a wiring schematic.
  2. Use a scan tool to check module inputs/commands.
  3. Stress-test circuits (e.g., load with a headlight for power/ground checks).
  4. Leverage relays for centralized testing (control/output sides).

(22:48) – Shoutout to trainer Richard Velko.

(23:17)"Flat Rate Test Drive" explained:

  • Monitor PIDs (load, MAF, MAP, O2 sensors) during WOT pulls to isolate drivability issues (fuel vs. restriction).

(34:42)Gaming corner: Elden Ring, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Days Gone Remaster.

(38:53) – Scan tool recommendations for drivability:

  • HP Tuners (budget-friendly, fast data logging).
  • Used Snap-on Solus Edge/Ultra (enhanced OEM data).
  • Shop responsibility (tools should be shop-provided!).

Quotes

  • "I don’t buy just a pure multimeter anymore... Get an insulation tester. You’ll need it for EVs/hybrids." – Matt
  • "The ‘Flat Rate Test Drive’ stresses the engine while watching PIDs to split the problem in half." – Matt
  • "For drivability, HP Tuners is my top pick—great data logging without breaking the bank." – Matt

Tools & Resources Mentioned:

  • Multimeters: Fluke 1587, Pico TA467, Vantage Pro, Curien.
  • Diagnostic Tactics: Wiring diagrams, scan tool bi-directionals, current ramping.
  • Games: Elden Ring, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Days Gone Remaster.
  • Scan Tools: HP Tuners, Snap-on Solus Edge, TopDon XTool.

Final Thoughts:

Matt’s takeaway? Invest in versatile tools (like megohmmeters) and lean on schematics/scan tools to avoid diagnostic rabbit holes.

12 Feb 2025Ford APIM and Jeep WCM Adventure [E173]00:21:59

Thanks to our Partner, NAPA Autotech

In this episode, Matt Fanslow dives into two detailed vehicle diagnostic and repair stories, highlighting the challenges and solutions involved in modern automotive repair. The episode is packed with technical insights, troubleshooting tips, and lessons learned from real-world scenarios.

Key Topics Covered:

2013 Ford Edge SYNC System Connectivity Issue

Problem: Intermittent cell phone disconnection from the SYNC system.

Diagnostic Process:

No DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) found.

Matt linked his phone to the system and tested it without issues.

Discovered the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) had never been updated since the vehicle was manufactured.

Challenges:

Attempted to update the APIM using Ford’s FDRS (Ford Diagnostic and Repair System).

Encountered issues with a USB driver link and access problems.

After multiple attempts, the SYNC system displayed a black screen.

Resolution:

Successfully updated the APIM after performing a capacitive discharge (CD) and updating the Front Control Interface Module (FCIM).

Verified the update through Ford’s SYNC website and Motorcraft service.

The client confirmed the connectivity issues were resolved.

Takeaway: Always verify software updates and be prepared for unexpected challenges during programming. Persistence and proper tools are key.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Wireless Control Module (WCM) Replacement

Problem: After replacing the WCM, the shop couldn’t add keys to the system.

Diagnostic Process:

The shop used an aftermarket scan tool and a dealer-provided PIN code to replace the WCM.

Attempted to add keys but failed, suspecting the keys were locked.

Matt suggested trying an aftermarket key, which was successfully added, making the vehicle drivable.

Challenges:

Discovered the PIN code provided by the dealer was incorrect.

The Passive Entry Module (PEM) required a matching PIN code to share data with the WCM.

The shop had to replace the WCM again with the correct PIN code.

Resolution:

Matt used an Xhorse tool to unlock and renew the original keys.

Successfully added the original keys and performed a PEM replacement.

The vehicle was fully functional.

Takeaway: Accurate information (e.g., correct PIN codes) is critical for successful repairs. Proxy systems add complexity, and having the right tools (e.g., immobilizer tools) is essential.

Key Lessons from the Episode:

Importance of Software Updates:

Outdated software can cause compatibility issues, especially with newer devices (e.g., iPhones).

Always check for updates and follow proper procedures when programming modules.

Challenges with Aftermarket Tools:

Aftermarket tools can have limitations, especially with complex systems like proxy key systems.

OEM tools and manufacturer resources are often necessary for advanced diagnostics and programming.

Persistence and Problem-Solving:

Complex issues may require multiple troubleshooting steps and collaboration with other professionals.

Filing Service Improvement Requests (SIRs) and reaching out to dealers or manufacturers can help resolve persistent issues.

Client Communication:

Keeping clients informed throughout the diagnostic and repair process builds trust and ensures satisfaction.

Action Items:

Ford Edge:

Verify the APIM update was...

30 Mar 2022Lessons from the Karate Kid's Bonsai Tree [E024]00:18:49
  • The Karate Kid was told to close his eyes and picture the Bonsai tree, essentially in your mind, picture the perfect tree.
  • Get down to details, picture this tree in your mind. And now. Open your eyes and start clipping, clipping, and tying, make this tree look like your, you know, what you had pictured in your mind. And Daniel says something to the tyranny of how will I know what's right. And Mr. Miyagi responds, if it came from you, it's going to be.
  • You could be ultra-focused on one specific area of auto repair. One idea would be diagnostics. Like I want to be a diag tech. I want to, I just want to diagnose vehicles.  So maybe to get better focused on the idea here of the bonsai tree is.
  • Maybe i's worth your time to close your eyes and just think about where you want to be. What, what do you want to do? Where do you want your career to head in what direction would you like that to be? And maybe it's something very specific. Like I want to be the best alignment. In town. you know, I want to make this much money or maybe not even a dollar a month.
  • Maybe it's; I want this lifestyle, you know, own a shop. Close your eyes and think about what it is you're after. Where would you like your career to go?
  • Maybe you need to add training. Maybe you need to add reaching out to a network or join a network. Maybe it's adding friends, it's a change of venue. Maybe it's not, maybe it's a conversation.
  • Listen to the episode with a Dutch Silverstein we talk about that you can't sit there with your mouth shut and assume they're going to the shop owner or manager is going to figure out what makes you tick.
  • Dutch Episode HERE.
