Today I’m thrilled to share the origin story of Oleander and Finch Design Studio, and exactly how I transformed from a student to a successful designer. Join me as I reveal my personal and professional hurdles. In this episode, I take you back to my early years, what initiated my decision to study design while being a few weeks postpartum with my second baby.

 Balancing motherhood and my passion for design, I found myself embarking on building a social media account, showcasing our renovated caravan, sharing early mood boards publicly was a big emotional leap, but the support and encouragement from bigger interior accounts fueled my passion. My business growth was organic, for two or more years it was a side hustle as  I drew upon my corporate background to focus on product innovation and networking on social media.

 As my business evolved, I developed a signature service tailored to the needs of clients during the COVID-19 pandemic. I expanded into the US interior design market, embracing new challenges and designing for American clients. Alongside my professional journey, I made significant life decisions, including having a third baby, which required careful planning and saying no to certain opportunities. 

Throughout this episode, I share insights into my strategies, the importance of documenting and creating frameworks, and the fulfillment I find in supporting fellow designers.

2. Use this prompt to reverse engineer your perfect client. “I want you to create a full ideal client avatar based on these service features *insert your offer and any information you’re 100% certain of about your ideal client. Don’t overthink just list out any dot points you know and let the robot do the rest.*
3. Use this prompt to create a content calendar. “Act as a social media strategist. Ask me strategic questions to support my goal of XX (reach, engagement, followers etc)  on Instagram. These questions should give you what you need to create a full content marketing plan. The reason I want to achieve that goal on Instagram is XX. My business offers interior design in the form of *give service details* ask me one question at a time and then when you have enough information create a 30 day content strategy with daily instructions of what to post. Can also be done for a 14 day content plan for a launch or specific focus etc.

I've realised that it's essential to detach my self-worth from business outcomes and embrace the adventure of experimentation. So, I if a task annoys me or I’m putting it off - I challenge myself to view tasks as an employee would—objectively. I imagine discussing strategies in a team meeting, refining decisions for success. 

When I evaluate results, I'm focusing on strategy over emotion.  Evidence based Intel and take it from there. Trying the "CEO perspective" is my way of embracing growth's discomfort.

Brandon first grabbed my attention online through his guerrilla style Facebook ads that are designed to be attention-grabbing without the usual sales pitch. He explains the inspiration behind this approach and how it helps in earning trust from the audience.

We delve into the world of digital advertising, particularly for those who might be new to digital marketing. He talks us through when it's the right time to invest in ads and suggest the types of ads to start with, especially for those who aren't tech-savvy. Interior designers often struggle to articulate their value, and I address this challenge, and get some real life strategies to create ads that stand out and include compelling calls to action, that get clicks! 

We explore various platforms for lead generation, including Facebook, TikTok, and the untapped potential of Pinterest, which I believe holds great promise for Australian interior designers.

Sales and Conversions are a crucial part of the advertising process, and Brandon offers great advice on optimising lead forms and websites to ensure potential clients don't scroll past. Lastly, we discuss the transition to paid ads and when emerging designers should start experimenting with ad spend.

 Breaking down the ways of recognising when it's time to raise your prices and offering tips on how to do it effectively.

The signs that indicate it's time to increase your pricing include:

1. When clients readily approve your invoice without discussion.
2. If you're overworked or feeling stretched due to too many clients.
3. If you're working with and attracting "difficult" clients on a budget.
4. When your conversion rate is exceptionally high.
5. If you initially undervalued your services.
6. When your diary is fully booked with a waitlist.
7. As your experience and confidence grow.
8. When you consistently receive positive customer feedback.
9. If you're not meeting your profit goals.
10. When you hear comments about being "too cheap."

Your design business should be both fulfilling and financially rewarding. I’m also bring practical insights about exactly how to implement a price rise in your business plus some pro tip techniques to find your position in the market..

How to calculate your conversion rate
‘Conversion rates are calculated by simply taking the number of conversions and dividing that by the number of total ad interactions that can be tracked to a conversion during the same time period. For example, if you had 50 conversions from 1,000 interactions, your conversion rate would be 5%, since 50 ÷ 1,000 = 5%.’

This week I've gone back to the coaching archives and decided to share (with permission) snippets from an anonymous frameworker's 90 minute zoom session.  This wasn't all we discussed in her mentor session, however it felt like a hugely beneficial part that could really help others feeling pressure to post and who just need a striped back and simple strategy to approach consistency on Instagram,  

This mentor session included a pretty universal brand strategy for intentional marketing.

In 2023, I learned some big lessons, I’ll be taking into 2024 with me. Kicking things off, launching my own online course for budding interior designers was a wild rollercoaster ride—packed with learning curves, a dash of copycat drama, and tons of grit. I did my best, stood firm on the side of authentic, quality-driven online education for creatives. And made a  major shift towards safeguarding my mental health and sparking personal growth. I dialed down the social media frenzy, choosing impactful connections over the endless scroll. This year was all about authenticity, innovation, and keeping it real—both for my community and me. Here’s to keeping it fresh, focused, and forward-moving!

Framework for Effective Time Blocking

Self-Assessment: Begin with a moment of honest reflection. Time blocking isn't one-size-fits-all. If it feels like a fit, let’s, do it... If not, that's okay too.

Visulaise and Scheduling: Imagine your ideal week. What tasks are non-negotiable? Schedule these into your calendar, using colours to differentiate between tasks like marketing, admin, creativity, and personal time.

Batch Similar Tasks: Cluster similar tasks. If you're filming video lessons, consider also scheduling other camera-ready activities on the same day.

Minimise Distractions: Designate specific times for email and use airplane mode to curb the temptation of constant connectivity. This fosters deep work, where your productivity peaks.

Customise Your Calendar: Your business, your rules. Align your tasks with your most productive times. Early bird or night owl, schedule demanding tasks when you're at your best.

Group Meetings and Calls: Consolidate meetings and calls to specific times or days. This reduces the mental load of constantly switching gears.

Financial and Data Tasks: Consider a "Finance Friday" for all things money. This keeps you in the right mindset to tackle financial tasks effectively.

Flexibility and Buffers: Build in buffer times for transitions or unexpected tasks. Rigidity can be the enemy of productivity. Allow space for breathers and personal moments.

Personal Time and Surprises: Don’t forget to block off time for you. Whether it’s a walk, time with kids, or an hour of "choose your own adventure," self-care is crucial.

Worry Window: Allocate a time slot weekly for worries. This helps compartmentalise concerns, reducing their immediate impact on your daily productivity.

Prep for Tomorrow: End each day with a brief planning session for the next day. This ensures you hit the ground running each morning with clarity.
