18 Sep 2023Inception, Ocean's Eleven, Costume Designer Jeffrey Kurland01:20:24

"Tenet is a film about many things, from entropy to time travel, Armageddon to environmentalism. But it's also a film about Robert Pattinson wearing a succession of truly astonishing suits. For that, we thank Jeffrey Kurland.

The storied costume designer had previously worked with Nolan on Inception – where he proved his tailoring chops – and Dunkirk, but Tenetposed a very specific set of challenges. The first one being just figuring out what the hell was actually going on.

"I read the script at least six times before I even sat down to talk with Chris," Kurland tells me, over the phone, from LA. "That's how you do any Chris Nolan film. The script is there, and it's totally wonderful. And then it's usually up from there. It's always a wild ride." - Tom Banham, Esquire Magazine, September 22nd, 2020

Jeffrey Kurland began his career in costume design in New York City. After graduating from Northwestern University with a B.A. in design, he moved to the east coast to design for the theatre. Jeffrey soon segued into designing costumes for film when he began designing the stylish films of director Woody Allen.

Jeffrey has the unique distinction of being the costume designer of 15 films for Woody Allen, from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. He has since realized the visual story for over 40 films, collaborating with such renowned directors as Milos Forman, Neil Jordan, Steven Soderbergh, Michael Mann, and Christopher Nolan.

During his career, Jeffrey has dressed a host of leading actors. He has created designs for leading men such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey, Jr., Michael Caine, Viggo Mortensen and Leonardo DiCaprio. He has also designed for leading ladies Julia Roberts, Marion Cotillard, Cameron Diaz, Annette Bening, Diane Keaton, Gena Rowlands and Ellen Page. He received a BAFTA Award, Britain's highest film honor, for his designs for Radio Days and an Academy Award nomination for his work on Bullets Over Broadway. Jeffrey was awarded the Costume Designers Guild award for his designs for the film Erin Brockovich and received a nomination for his work on Ocean's 11. His work has also been recognized through being honored with The Hamilton Timeless Style Award.

Jeffrey Kurland sits on the board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He co-curated the exhibit 50 Designers/50 Costumes: Concept to Character for the Academy, and his designs have also been featured in several exhibits around the world. He has spoken on the art of costume design in numerous symposia at the Directors Guild of America, the American Film Institute, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and UCLA, where he has also taught. Jeffrey's work is featured in the publications Screencraft: Costume Design, 50 Designers/50 Costumes: Concept to Character and Dressed: A Century of Hollywood Costume Design.

21 Nov 2020Dayna Pink With Host Phillip Boutte Jr00:56:56
Designing Hollywood Podcast Zoom Home Edition!  With your host Phillip Boutte Jr. Meet Dayna Pink: Thanks to one simple shirt, Lovecraft Country's dreamy wardrobe was born. If you have been tuning in to Misha Green's supernatural horror series on HBO, you know the show is no casual watch. The anthology series, which hones in on the supernatural experiences of a Black family in 1950s Jim Crow America, can be exciting, moving, puzzling and downright horrifying with each passing twist and turn. But, there is something about the show that won't make you want to cover your eyes—and that's the clothes. With Dayna Pink at the helm of the costume design, the show visually transports us back to the colorful, glamorous dress of the 1950s in fresh ways, all while against the nightmarish backdrop of the period. "[I was] lucky enough that I didn't have to keep to the letter of exactly what that period was we had—because this is a fantasy in a way," Pink told E! News exclusively. "There's [a] fantastical element to it, so I got to add that with what I was doing." Given the otherworldly plot, Pink could break the fashion rules of history. "I got to take the real silhouettes and the real pieces and then add fashion to that, so sometimes I would take a shape of something from that time and then build it out of a modern fabric," she explained. "The colors and the fabrics and the prints of that time maybe were a little different, so I got to mix it up, which was what was so creative and fun about doing the show." As Pink put it, she and her team got to "take this period and sort of stand it on its head." The standard black tuxedo men donned to awards shows for decades is quickly becoming an outmoded uniform. From bold colors, to striking textures, to novel silhouettes, men’s awards show looks are now just as fashion-forward as women’s. “It was a slow evolution and then a really quick evolution,” says Ilaria Urbinati, who styles Rami Malek, Bradley Cooper and John Krasinski. “Ten years ago when ‘Mad Men’ first came out, that had a big influence. And then I did that line of suiting with Albert Hammond Jr. that was all color, which nobody was doing. And then wardrobe designer Dayna Pink bought the suits to put on Ryan Gosling for ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love.’ That movie was such a revolution for menswear, because it was all about giving Steve Carell a makeover and how, if you dress for the life you want, then you’ll get the life.” Learn more about your ad choices. 18 Jan 2023Glass Onion, Knives Out, Costumer Designer Jenny Eagan00:52:00
Jenny Eagan, costume designer for the new star-studded Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, has a career path defined by opportunities taken. Although she did not formally study costume design, her many award-winning projects feature characters who leap off the screen, thanks in no small part to her costumes. Who would have thought a girl from Independence, Missouri would end up in this profession? “Certainly not my Mom,” laughs Eagan. “I wanted to be a middle-school teacher to make a difference. Halfway through college, I switched to textile marketing and merchandising because I love clothes, but never knew that could lead to working in the entertainment industry.” Post-graduation, Eagan drove cross country to live in San Diego, where she became ‘excellent on rollerblades’ before following friends to Los Angeles. She joined a temp agency and her first interview was for a low budget film. As fate would have it, Mary Zophres was the costume designer on her second temp job. Eagan shadowed her on weekends, getting coffee and grabbing lunches. She observed and absorbed everything, until Zophres invited her to join the team on Any Given Sunday, her first job as a production assistant. Six months at Western Costume Company gained her entry into the Union. She spent over a decade with Zophres, progressing from production assistant to assistant costume designer. “Mary hates when I say she was an amazing mentor, but I didn’t know anything and she taught me everything.” Her first feature as a costume designer was Contraband, with Mark Wahlberg and director Baltasar Kormákur, but the project that launched her career was the first season of True Detective for HBO. The show garnered her the Costume Designers Guild Award for Best Contemporary Television Series in 2015. “It was an amazing experience and a confidence builder for me.” Eagan moved on to design several small but critically acclaimed films and television series including Olive Kitteridge which won her an Emmy, Widows, and the celebrated Beasts of No Nation. The first iteration of the Knives Out trilogy, written and directed by Rian Johnson, was an unmitigated hit. “Because of our limited shoot time, we had all guns blazing,” she says. “I feel like I fit every single one of the cast members the week before. Thankfully, Rian wrote well-defined characters and chose seasoned actors. We were all in sync.” She was awarded her third CDGA for her efforts. Johnson wanted everyone to ratchet it up for the sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Eagan decided early on that most of the costumes would be custom made. Shooting on a remote island off Greece and in Serbia during Covid, she knew she could not count on shopping. She prepped in Los Angeles, anticipating multiples for principals and stunt doubles, then brought extra fabrics to cover her back. While designing the first Knives Out, Eagan forged great relationships with Johnson and producer Ram Bergman. They agreed that travel during the pandemic could be problematic and allowed her to bring her union team from Los Angeles. She brought ACD Jessica Albertson, supervisor Emily Egge, set costumer Claire Sandrin, and cutter/fitter Erica Ciaglia. “Claire, Emily, and I first worked together on No Country for Old Men (designed by Mary Zophres) and have collaborated as much as possible since. I was thankful for this luxury. I’m not a one-man show, we are a team.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
03 Sep 2024Old Dads, Ray Donovan, Costume Designer Christopher Lawrence01:00:11

CHRISTOPHER LAWRENCE (Costume Designer) drew inspiration for his design career while putting together looks for he and his dance partner on the beloved “American Bandstand.” He then started working at the trendy boutique Camp Beverly Hills where he began cultivating a clientele of actors, directors and, most importantly, Costume Designers. Christopher caught his first break in the wardrobe department on two iconic television series, “Moonlighting” and “Pee Wee’s Playhouse.” He then decided that designing feature films was his true passion, and he quickly developed relationships with some of the world’s most celebrated Designers such as Ellen Mirojnick and Albert Wolsky. Before he knew it, Christopher had created his path in features, working on such films as “City Slickers,” “Beaches” and “Bugsy,” the latter of which garnered the Academy Award® for Best Costume Design. Christopher came up through the ranks in the wardrobe department and quickly became one of the industry’s top Costume Supervisors. In 1999, Michael Mann recognized Christopher’s talent and promoted him to Associate Costume Designer on “The Insider” (Al Pacino, Russell Crowe), and Christopher has been designing films ever since. Some of the credits that followed were “The Anniversary Party” (Gwyneth Paltrow, Kevin Kline), “Showtime” (Robert De Niro, Eddie Murphy) and “S.W.A.T.” (Colin Farrell, Samuel L. Jackson). Christopher has become a favorite of Jason Statham, having designed “The Mechanic,” “Cellular” and “Crank” and is a longtime collaborator with film director Simon West, most notably on the Capital One “What’s In Your Wallet?” Viking campaign, which won the Costume Designers Guild Award - Best Commercial Costume Design. Christopher teamed up yet again with Michael Mann on two additional projects, including the feature film “Texas Killing Fields” (starring Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain and Chloe Grace Moretz). Christopher served as costume designer on the Jennifer Aniston film, “Management,” and from sketch to fabric he designed all of Miley Cyrus’ Hannah Montana costumes for “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” from which dolls, Halloween costumes and sportswear were created for the tween market. “The Space Between Us” reunites Christopher with director Peter Chelsom who directed the Hannah Montana movie. Christopher was the costume designer for the first three seasons of the popular Showtime series “Ray Donovan,” for which he was twice nominated for a Costume Designers Guild award. It was his fifth nomination, having won twice for his commercial work. Recently, he was the Costume Designer for Bill Burr's OLD DADS.

05 Oct 2024Killer Heat, The Iron Claw, Costume Designer Jennifer Starzyk01:14:24

Costume Designer, JENNIFER STARZYK is a creative collaborator with over twenty five years in the film industry. She takes a character-driven approach with her own unique vision to serve the story and support the script. Her versatile yet distinct style has been showcased across a variety of genres and periods. Perhaps best known for the Netflix psychological series, Mindhunter. where Jennifer worked closely to create a restrained period look with renowned director David Fincher. Her range varies in tone as seen in Warner Bros Neo-Noir Reminiscence starring Hugh Jackman & Rebecca Ferguson; to the outlandish colorful contemporary in Bill & Ted Face The Music; to allowing documentary footage inform how Colin Firth and Toni Colette should look in aughts fashion for Max’s The Staircase. Jennifer’s latest work was A24 biopic, The Iron Claw, written and directed by Sean Durkin. The Iron Claw stars Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson and Hold McCallany and is a tragic film that tells the story of the Von Erich’s. Spanning from late 1970s- 1990s, her costumes showcase the dynasty of wrestlers and help create the world of rural Texas. Jennifer’s elaborate ring robes were included on display at the 2024 ASU FIDM Art of Costume Design in Film. Upcoming work includes Amazon’s Killer Heat, starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Richard Madden. This contemporary mystery was filmed on location in Greece and follows twin brothers who find themselves in a dangerous love triangle on an isolated island. The contemporary costumes highlight quiet luxury and showcase several Greek fashion brands for added authenticity. During the WGA & SAG strikes, Jennifer lent her energy and talent to help costume The Groundlings charity fundraiser, One Night Only. Having just days to outfit 35 performers for The Chorus Line. The musical featured Saturday Night Live alum Kristen Wiig, Will Forte, Ana Gasteyer amongst other incredible talent and helped raise over $200,000 for Motion Picture & Television Fund. All proceeds went to below the line affected by the strikes. Currently, she is designing a contemporary action comedy for Twentieth Century Fox titled, Eenie Meanie. Written and directed by Shawn Simmons. The film stars Samara Weaving as a reformed teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend. No matter the project, Jennifer Starzyk brings the same fierce spirit and powerful approach to designing costumes.

02 Aug 2022Award Winning Costume Designer Marlene Stewart01:01:37
Award Winning Costume Designer Marlene Stewart  Joins Designing Hollywood Show for an all-new episode dedicated to  Top Gun Maverick! With your host Tess McLeod  Top Gun: Maverick is not just the first time a Tom Cruise film brought in more than $100 million on opening weekend—it made nearly a quarter of a billion dollars, wildly surpassing expectations and records set by superhero blockbusters The Batman and most recently Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. These numbers are impressive on their own but in the context of empty theaters after two years of the pandemic, they are truly astonishing. Making such a hard-won success look effortless is de rigor for costume designer Marlene Stewart, whose credits include Oblivion and Tropic Thunder. She treats the accomplishment with characteristic sincerity. “I have worked with the late Tony Scott before and collaborated with Tom Cruise on several movies, so it also was an honor,” says Stewart. On this project, the magnitude of the original film’s success loomed large. “The challenge was to design another movie and to give it a great look without changing the heart and soul,” Stewart explains. In many ways, that heart and soul was embodied in a particular garment. Tom Cruise in his flight jacket is an image that has resonated ever since the film premiered. Reproducing the jacket was an exercise in precision, investigation, and determination. “It was one of our hardest, most important tasks. That attention to detail meant that other costumes had to get a similar amount of attention so that they would all fit in the same heightened reality. “In a testament to Joe Kosinski’s film-making and Tom Cruise as an actor and producer, many of the most exciting scenes are real U.S. Navy pilots flying actual planes, not CG. In this spirit of authenticity, many of the costumes, despite being uniforms, also were custom made.” The results are costumes that leap off the screen as much as the action.  Sponsored by Costume Rentals Corporation! The variety of costumes at Costume Rentals Corporation is expansive. CRC is recognized worldwide as the premier supplier of military and police costume uniform rentals. CRC can accommodate any production from the ballroom to the battlefield. Armies can be outfitted for a formal affair or equipped with fatigues for battle scenes. We can deck out a band to march onto the playing field or dress bathing beauties in period 1920’s swimwear. Authentic to every detail, CRC has the patches, medals, buckles, buttons, accessories, and research to make all elements historically accurate. Learn more about your ad choices. 🎬🎤🎬 Designing Hollywood Podcast The Queen's Gambit Award Winning Costume Designer Gabriele Binder joins Designing Hollywood Podcast tomorrow for an all new episode with your host Robert Meyer Burnett 🎬🎬🎬🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧🎧 #TheQueensGambit reflect the growing sophistication and self-control of the main character, fictional 1960s chess champion #BethHarmon, often incorporating structural lines and black-and-white patterns, materializing elements of the game into her wardrobe. Clothes are a wonderful way of exhibiting history. What’s fascinating about watching Beth grow up is that she puts on all of these different characters. She's dressing up like different personas throughout the course of the show,” says #AnyaTaylorJoy. Sometimes wardrobe is literally tethered to storyline: Beth’s overcoat and hat in Moscow, for example, recall the white Queen. For her hair and makeup, the touchstone was Natalie Wood. All of it working back from a unifying palette thanks to German production designer Uli Hanisch (of the gorgeous Babylon Berlin). @THE BURNETTWORK @The Costume Designers Guild @ExtremeCostumes Produced by Martika lbarra Follow Host Robert Meyer Burnett @THE BURNETTWORK 🎬🎧🎬🎧🎬 ♛THE QUEEN’S GAMBIT #WalterTevis #ScottFrank 🎬PD #UliHanisch Costumes #GabrieleBinder ADs #DanielChour #ThorstenKlein #SetDec #IngeborgHeinemann MUA #DanielParker 📺 #TheQueensGambit on #Netflix Sponsored By United American Costume Co.     SHOW LESS       Learn more about your ad choices. She continuously challenges herself by taking on projects that explore new expressions of her creativity. In 2018, she made her New York City Metropolitan opera debut, designing Nico Muhly’s opera, Marnie. Miuccia Prada selected Phillips for her Iconoclasts project; to curate installations for the brands flagship stores in London and Beijing which included a short fashion film for the brand, which Phillips wrote and directed, called Passages. Her friend Alessandro Michele, Creative Director of GUCCI commissioned her to create content for a special issue of A Magazine he guest edited and to style a brand film directed by Gia Coppola. She has also collaborated on special projects with Van Cleef and Arpels, Cartier, Valentino and Swarovski. Phillips was an inaugural member of the TIMES UP coalition and was asked by Reese Witherspoon to design its logo. Lawrence Sher, ASC,is an American cinematographer and film director, best known for comedy films such as Garden State, The Dictator, and The Hangover series, frequently collaborating with directors Todd Phillips and Zach Braff.[ He made his directorial debut with Father Figures, which began a wide theatrical release on December 22, 2017, by Warner Bros. Pictures. He was nominated for an Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography for the 2019 film Joker, directed by Phillips. As cinematographer of the 2009 film The Hangover, Sher described how a scene early in the movie shows the main characters on the roof of their hotel overlooking a stereotypical shot of the Las Vegas Strip; Sher indicated that he had tried to evoke the behind-the-scenes Vegas—after the characters wake up the following morning—by shooting a scene behind the hotels where the real action takes place. Actor Bradley Cooper credited Sher's visual style with enhancing the film's comedy, noting how Sher has "a great eye, a lot of energy and he just knows what's funny" and that "Some guys just can’t shoot comedies, but Larry knows exactly what he's doing." With the success of Zach Braff's Kickstarter, Sher worked on Braff's 2014 feature, Wish I Was Here. In January 2020, Sher was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the movie Joker, but lost to Roger Deakins for 1917.

Helen Huang is known for her work on , Netflix Holidate, American Horror Story (2011)  Helen Huang is a renowned respected designer who has worked on various projects from American Horror Story, Fox’s 9-1-1, as well as reshoots for Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipating of One Harley Quinn. Huang chatted with us offering insight into her latest project, Netflix’s Holidate, which stars Emma Roberts, Luke Bracey, and Kristin Chenoweth as well as her career as a whole. I did think back to rom-coms where the costumes are things that I enjoy. I think in general, for me, when it comes to dividing the look of characters and things in a film, it’s less about referencing other movies. It’s more about, my original philosophy is generally for any movie, but in reference to rom-coms, from my perspective, I didn’t want to do a rom-com where the girl starts out really sad. And then [saying] “I need clothes” and she needs a guy and then looking completely different. I would think that that is not how women act in real life, and in general not how humans react in real life.  So it was very important to me, especially with Sloane, that we just sort of say, “she’s a girl that dresses this way.” So when she’s sad, she pulls these things out of her closet — you’re in your sweats and t-shirt, but they don’t look different. She doesn’t look like she’s a whole different person. 24 Jan 2025Wicked Costume Designer Paul Tazewell 01:11:37

Wicked Costume Designer Paul Tazewell & Producer Host Phillip Boutté Jr. In ‘Wicked,’ the Fashion Is a Big Piece of the Magic Costume designer Paul Tazewell spared no detail in bringing Elphaba and Glinda to life through their clothing. Although Tazewell has more than three decades of experience designing costumes for Broadway (he earned his first Tony nomination for Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk in 1996), “my love of detail is so much more apparent with film than it is necessarily with theater,” he says. (It’ll probably come as no surprise to learn that Tazewell is a Virgo.) For Tazewell, it wasn’t about recreation, nor was it about reinventing the wheel: Success lies in identifying those key looks, then being able to “digest how I experience them and see them through my lens and how I might reimagine what that same energy and life force looks like.”

09 May 2023Wakanda Forever, Bullet Train, Sound Mixer Peter J. Devlin00:46:51

Peter J. Devlin, recently elected as a Governor of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, has worked on more than 70 films and been nominated for five Oscars including Black Panther, Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, Transformers, Star Trek (2009) and Pearl Harbor. He received a BAFTA nomination for his work on Star Trek and a Primetime Emmy nomination for Star Trek: Picard. He has worked closely with some of the top directors in film, including Michael Bay, Ryan Coogler, Ron Howard and Patty Jenkins. Earlier in the year he wrapped his work on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and is thrilled to have just worked with Chris Pine, who is making his directorial debut with the upcoming film Poolman. A past CAS Board member, it was his first CAS nomination for Oliver Stone’s Any Given Sunday that introduced him to the organization in 2000. Since then, he has received multiple nominations.

Born and raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Devlin knew that he wanted to work in film after seeing Jaws as a teenager. Though his school principal told him his dreams were “pie in the sky,” he applied for a trainee audio assistant position at the BBC in Belfast in 1981. Initially thinking he might move into the camera department, he quickly realized his true interest was in production sound. To prepare for the interview, he spent his days in the local library reading as much about microphone principles, recording techniques and filmmaking as he could find. He got the job, which proved the perfect training ground, with the BBC’s wide range of productions, from news, to sports, to concerts and to radio drama. “I had great mentors, and I learned about all of the different disciplines of sound there.”

Devlin’s focus and persistence were evident as he took the next step, writing to directors he admired, including Michael Mann. He still has the letter Mann sent him in 1987, inviting him to visit the set of Miami Vice. From there, Devlin forged connections with others in the industry, landing his first job in the United States, working in commercials. Eventually, he moved into television and film.

Today, Devlin continues to adapt to the ever-changing technologies that enhance storytelling through production sound mixing. While he wishes that he had today’s tech for some of the films he worked on in the past, he says, “The most important element will always be the work of the sound department as a team, boom operators and sound utilities. Their expertise allows me to concentrate on recording performance and create tracks that can elevate a scene when they are handed off to our colleagues in post production.”

Devlin joins an illustrious group of past CAS Career Achievement Honorees including: Anna Behlmer, Willie Burton, Tom Fleischman, Les Fresholtz, Ed Greene, Tomlinson Holman, Doc Kane, William B. Kaplan, David MacMillan, Paul Massey, Scott Millan, Mike Minkler, Walter Murch, Andy Nelson, Chris Newman, Lee Orloff, Richard Portman, John Pritchett, Don Rogers, Gary Rydstrom, Dennis Sands, Randy Thom, Jim Webb, Jeffrey S. 14 Nov 2022The Woman King Costume Designer Gersha Phillips01:10:37
The Woman King Costume Designer Gersha Phillips Design The tactile & gorgeous costume’s!  Oscar winner Viola Davis leads a strong cast into battle in an epic from Gina Prince-Bythewood, inspired by real women warriors. Davis is absolutely mesmerizing as the Agojie’s strategist warrior. Costume designer Gersha Phillips outfitted a literal army for “The Woman King.” The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival ahead of its theatrical release, stars Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch. Bolstered by strong critical reviews, the film is already part of the awards conversation heading into fall. Set in the 1820s, the historical film tells the story of the Agojie, a group of female warriors who protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey. Phillips was familiar with the concept, having assisted Ruth Carter with research on “Black Panther,” which featured a group of fictional female warriors called the Dora Milaje. “The pitch [for ‘The Woman King’] came as ‘this is the story about the real Dora Milaje,’” Phillips says. Outfitting an army meant creating visual cues to differentiate levels of status and affluence. Signals of wealth in the kingdom included numerous layers of fabrics and jewelry piled onto the body.
