24 Apr 2020Episode 12- Toledo Geller00:30:25

Virginia founded Toledo Geller in 2006 after recognizing a need in the luxury residential market for a firm with specialized knowledge in both the design and construction process. Formally trained in interior design, she also gained invaluable experience working along side her father, a general contractor, on construction sites. A native of Brooklyn, Virginia is a mother who loves historical fiction and entertaining in her 1920’s Craftsman style New Jersey home, which she is constantly updating.

The experience of renovating a children’s hospital playroom sparked Jessica’s decision to switch careers from social work to interior design. Her intuitive design sensibility is both innate and learned from experience in the field, and she gravitates towards the perfectly imperfect—such as introducing a color that seems “off” but magically completes the design. A mother of three, Jessica moved to Essex Fells within a year of renovating her 1850s Hoboken townhouse to embark on transforming a 1920s center hall colonial into the perfect cozy home for spending time with her family.

Because of her eye for design and ability to execute her creative vision, that first project snowballed into several more. Hema now designs residential and commercial spaces around the country. As the business continued to grow rapidly, it became clear that it needed its own identity apart from Hema. In 2022 Sagrada Studio was born out of her belief that there is no more sacred (“sagrada”) space on earth than where we live and create. The Sagrada Studio mission is to honor these sacred spaces by helping clients find their own version of timeless, always with an eye towards culture, luxury, and comfort.

13 Dec 2021EPISODE 93 - GAIL M DAVIS00:22:15

This is a special episode to discuss true commitment when it comes to anti-racist work. I am watching folks check boxes like it is a to do list. I am here to tell you that it is NOT! This is a life long commitment of unlearning raciscm as well as looking at your privilege under a magnifying lens. It is not enought to attend a rally or write a check to a black organization, it is way more than that! My question to you is, "are you REALLY committed?"  It looks like you want recognition for your performance.

Davina Ogilvie is founder of Wovn Home, a direct-to-consumer custom window treatments company based in New York.

After growing up in Bangkok, Thailand surrounded by beautiful custom window treatments, Davina was surprised to find a lack of options to choose from when she was decorating her own Manhattan apartment. When she turned to local upholstery shops, she found they were incredibly expensive and also required months-long lead times. On the other hand, big box retailers only offered standard sizes that were often poor quality. Rather than choosing either of these less-than-desirable options, she decided to use her previous experience from working in the New York fashion industry to create her own custom window treatments. From this experience, she created and launched Wovn Home in September 2019, offering designer-quality custom window treatments at an accessible price point.

Wovn Home’s fabrics are made of luxurious linens sourced from premium textile mills in Belgium, while the patterns are designed exclusively for Wovn and screen printed in Los Angeles. The brand’s drapes, shades and pillows are produced in North Carolina through family owned workrooms that have generations of experience and knowledge in the industry to ensure a quality product. Through Wovn Home, Davina hopes to enable consumers and designers alike to create beautifully customized spaces that complement and reflect their own style and preferences.

The roots of our products are in Johanna’s native Sweden. That is where, as a young girl, she sat in her mother’s atelier as she meticulously crafted dresses by hand.

As a young woman, Johanna took these influences with her to America to attend fashion school and then to establish herself as a successful clothing designer.
Working for such companies as BCBG, Katayone Adeli, Express and Gap - her accessible designs have been worn by women all over the country.  Whether gracing  the pages of Vogue, an actress’ wardrobe or a special night out,  her designs made women feel special.
Now, Johanna has turned her eye to designing for the home. Through her travels, she has discovered incredibly talented artisans and collaborates with them to elevate their traditional craftsmanship with refined composition.
Whether engaging the dyers in the highlands of Peru or the weaving families of Portugal, she envisions the possibilities of their techniques and incorporates their unique skills into her products.

06 Nov 2020EPISODE 40 - BRIAN PAQUETTE00:19:21

With a background in painting and conceptual art, Brian Paquette brings a singular point of view to the Seattle and San Francisco interior design scene. Rather than following a particular style, he draws inspiration from a variety of sources: architecture, travel, and the natural world, to name a few. For Brian, interior design is not something sterile or static; it’s a living extension of art, meant to be touched, used and admired.

That mindset is at the heart of Brian Paquette Interiors. We are a high end design firm and we build custom spaces that are at once open and intimate, grounded yet light. Our Seattle interior design team works through a close, collaborative process, creating homes that reflect our clients’ identity, history and aspirations. We partner with local craftsmen to ensure every element in our projects is unique and carefully considered, with its own story that adds to the greater whole.

Founded in 2009, Brian Paquette Interiors provides full-service interior design. Our Seattle and San Francisco interiors have been featured in Architectural Digest, Dwell, Luxe Magazine and more. We also regularly work in Los Angeles, New York City, British Columbia and beyond.

In addition to interior design, we offer furniture, textiles and décor through Brian Paquette at Home. Our online shop is yet another extension of Brian’s personal aesthetic. Experience it for yourself.

16 Aug 2024EPISODE 189 - THE BROWNSTONE BOYS00:28:03

This is a story about falling in love, taking chances, and of course, Brooklyn.

We met on an app in 2017 and chatted non-stop for two weeks before ever meeting in person. Immediately, we bonded over our shared love of architecture and design, and have been inseparable ever since.

Although Jordan is from Las Vegas and Barry is from New Orleans, we’ve called Brooklyn home for 15 years. Our first dates were biking around Bed Stuy, admiring the beautiful brownstones and dreaming about our future home.

Six months into dating, we purchased our first home together – a 130 year old historic brownstone. We know, we move fast!

Our fixer-upper was in need of some major renovations but we needed to squeeze our dreams into our budget. People say that renovating a home is the most stressful thing a couple ever goes through but it became our foundation.

We started our own blog and Instagram to document the renovation process and quickly built an incredible online community. We finally worked up the courage to ask one of our followers, Simply Cyn, if she wanted help with her renovation. Her “yes!” completely transformed our lives.

Since then, we’ve completed over 25 projects, expanded to a team of seven, and even wrote a bookFor the Love of Renovating, which is available at your local bookstore or online.

When we’re not taking measurements, laying tile, or stripping a 200-year-old bannister, you’ll find us sipping iced coffees on our stoop, taking our 10-year-old puppy, Zuko, on a walk, and of course, still biking together through our beautiful neighborhood – now as fiancés.

27 Nov 2020EPISODE 43 - KABRIA CUMMINGS 00:27:51

Chicago native Kabria Cummings has interior design in her DNA. Her parents, Sam and Ella Cummings were quite the dynamic decorating duo. They scoured thrift stores for items that they could breathe new life into. They made drapery, reupholstered furniture, gardened, collected global art and her father even built his own furniture. Additionally, Kabria was influenced by her cousin Thea Nerissa Barnes, who collected artisanal items while traveling the world as a professional dancer with Martha Graham and Alvin Ailey.

Decorating and collecting art from her travels became part-time hobbies while Kabria established a career in graphic design and marketing. However, the deaths of her parents two months apart and other life-altering events that included the end of a long-term relationship, surgery, and the loss of her job of 10 ½ years, prompted her to reevaluate things. Kabria knew that she wanted to pursue her passion for interior decorating full-time.  In 2016, she founded Global Attic LLC.

Global Attic sells a carefully curated collection of one-of-a-kind home décor sourced and sometimes designed by Kabria. The statement pieces transform bland living spaces, convey individuality, and help to support the global community. 23 Feb 2024EPISODE 168 - KEVIE MURPHY - K.A. MURPHY INTERIORS00:22:35

Kevie Murphy is the founder and principal of k.a. murphy interiors, a full-service design firm focused on high-end residential interiors. In Kevie’s interiors, function dictates and informs, while beauty always transcends. Balancing both, in striking and elevated ways, is fundamental to her vision.

Design wasn’t Kevie’s first career. Growing up in Port Jefferson Station, New York, Kevie went to Boston University and then attended law school. This led to her working as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn, after which she entered the private sector and became a partner at a New York City firm.

It was when Kevie and her husband purchased a Brooklyn Heights home that required extensive renovation, that she realized her passion for interior design and enrolled at the New York School of Interior Design.

Everything has brought Kevie to this moment: her passion, her enthusiasm, and her ability to connect with people, which she uses, today, to help make people’s lives better. This starts with her own life: 1 husband, 4 kids, and 3 houses. All of which Kevie sees as “ongoing, always changing, and forever works in progress.” They’re also the perfect examples of what Kevie means when she says, “Home is your memory maker.”

22 Apr 2022Episode 103 - Gail M Davis00:22:43

Today's episode is entitled..."Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover." I recently was sourcing fabric from a local rep and per usual, the following questions ALWAYS occur; "how much?" "What is the stock?" And if you don't have it in stock..."when will it come in?" These are run of the mill questions, I don't care even if you have a client that has "no budget." Newsflash, EVERYONE has a number; even if they don't tell you. So I asked how much and the response was..."you know what they say if you have to ask?" I am sharing this episode to enlighten folks on how to NOT judge a book by its cover. I don't care how I shopped in the past. If I call on you for a particular vendor, please be very aware that I understand the vendors prices as I have done my due diligence. This happens too often in this industry with people who act as gatekeepers to keep folks out because we don't look a certain way or speak or have the right pedigree. Beauty is for ALL...not a chosen few.
