14 Feb 2023 | Ben Arthur & SongWriter (EP43) | 00:27:10
The featured artist in this episode is Ben Arthur – a New York-based singer, songwriter, novelist, and podcaster – with Virginia roots. Ben is passionate about exploring how inspiration works and how creativity functions and relates to art. Ben strongly believes that art can alleviate people’s suffering and how the connection of art to money by society is a cultural sickness. He spearheads multiple projects that probe the intersection and interplay between literature, music, and visual art. Ben's SongWriter podcast “turns stories into songs” by pairing literary and musical artists together. Featured artists include Questlove, Joyce Carol Oates, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Roxane Gay, Amanda Shires of The Highwomen, Cheryl Strayed, Susan Orlean, Steve Earle, George Saunders, and Katie Melua. In Ben's Emmy-nominated SongCraft Presents video series, each segment brings together two artists, unknown to each other, to write a song in a three-hour session. From developing the concept and lyrics to its actual composition and arrangement to performance, the artists are challenged to make not a good song, but a great song. Since 1997, Ben Arthur the musician, has released 10 albums since 1997 and has been featured in Rolling Stone, Forbes, and American Songwriter magazines as well as the New York Times. He has opened for Tori Amos, Shawn Colvin, Bruce Hornsby, Sophie B. Hawkins, Toots & the Maytals, Old 97s, and many years ago, he shared an open mic stage with an up-and-coming artist Charlottesville, Virginia’s very own Dave Matthews. Join Team Derringer as they delve into Ben's catalog of music, discover the stories behind his songs, and learn about the interesting artists he has featured on his SongWriter podcast. 19 Jul 2022 | Posthumously Prince (EP36) | 00:22:55
In this episode, Team Derringer discusses an artist that was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, of his generation. With his death in April 2016 of a fentanyl overdose, Prince left his fans wondering if he could have ever reclaimed the pinnacle of success he enjoyed during the 1980s. Prince left behind a vault of unreleased music. Prospects of hidden gems reside in Prince’s vault – a literal vault of music beneath his Minneapolis-based Paisley Park Studios – which contains thousands - possibly tens of thousands - of unreleased songs. Prince’s estate has already begun releasing music found in Prince’s vault. Team Derringer - Laura, Alton, Dave, and Paul - speculates on whether the music lives up to the Purple One’s high standards and whether any rare gems will be uncovered. The Team also weighs in on the re-packaged and re-released live music from Prince’s 1985 concert at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York, “Prince and The Revolution: Live.” From there, the Team debates the merits of live vs. studio albums and each team member shares their favorite live album. Finally, each member of Team Derringer reveals their favorite Prince song and discusses whether Prince ever Jumped the Shark and, subsequently, Crossed the Rubicon. All songs heard in this episode (except one) can be found on the corresponding Spotify playlist: “Posthumously: Prince.” Let us know your favorite Prince song! 16 Feb 2021 | Fleetwood Mac Won’t Stop & Why - Part A (EP10) | 00:44:31
Using humor, unique insights, and brotherly love, in this Part A episode with help from Special Guest Alton, The Derringer Brothers - Paul & Dave - discuss Fleetwood Mac's first seven years as a band right up until the phenomenal addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. With plenty of first loves and memory-fests including Dave's very own wrestling song and Paul's fascination with the Bermuda Triangle, they also manage to provide helpful insight about the 10 Fleetwood Mac albums and various singles released from 1967 to 1974, celebrating the Peter Green years followed by the Bob Welch years and the rise of Christine McVie. Along the way, they tell the strange, almost unbelievable tale of how Mick Fleetwood and John McVie had to sue their manager to reclaim the band's name and how, after failing to sniff the charts for nine singles in a row, they almost called it quits right before the stars aligned and they began their incredible ascent to superstardom status. These true-life tales are uniquely spun by The Derringer Brothers and any concerns about "jumping the shark" are held at bay until Part B. The songs in this episode are featured on Fleetwood Mac Won't Stop Playlist - Derringer Discoveries. 22 Feb 2022 | Will Creedence Reunite? (EP30) | 00:38:42
How long is too long? In Episode 28, Derringer Discoveries covered a band that reunited with all four original members after a 40-year break. Now, for this episode, the band under the microscope is Creedence Clearwater Revival, also known as Creedence or CCR. They have been separated for 50 years! CCR's line-up was Tom Fogerty, John Fogerty, Stu Cook, and Doug "Cosmo" Clifford. Tom was John's older brother. CCR broke up in 1972, not long after Tom quit the band. Even though they have not been a functioning band for 50 years, they are still one of the Top 300 bands in the world, based on Spotify listeners. Without a doubt, you will know their songs. They even had a hit with Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" from their biggest selling album, Cosmo's Factory. Tom has been dead since 1990. The other three have been estranged since 1972. In this episode, Team Derringer - Laura, Alton, Paul, and Dave - undertake five tasks: (1) A countdown of seven fantastic CCR songs spanning their seven albums; (2) Disclosure of CCR's #1 song, according to Spotify listeners; (3) Did they Jump the Shark; (4) Did they Cross the Rubicon; and (5) Will they reunite? Stay for the Post Episode Bonus as Team Derringer conducts an exclusive interview with Neil Richards of the UK-based band The Carousels who have been together with the same four members since 1994. Hear snippets of some of The Carousel's best songs, as selected by Derringer Discoveries. We also uncover the compelling stories behind the songs as told by Neil. 23 Jun 2022 | L.A. Women (EP35) | 00:26:16
In this episode, Team Derringer - Laura, Alton, Dave, and Paul - commemorates the recent 50th Anniversary re-release of The Doors' classic album: L.A. Woman. Many listeners will readily know the hits from that album: "Love Her Madly" and "Riders on the Storm." Plus, the catch phrase Mister mojo risin' from the title track. But Derringer Discoveries decides to forego an exploration of The Doors in favor of focusing on an L.A. alternative rock band called Livingmore, featuring Alex Moore and Spencer Livingston, with Mike Schadel on drums. Alex gave Derringer Discoveries two exclusive interviews, providing fascinating insight into Livingmore's songwriting process. As a result, Livingmore supersedes The Doors, becoming the featured artist for Episode 35. And Alex turns Team Derringer onto other L.A.-based recording artists, such as Jen de la Osa of the band Aloud and a Janis Joplin-esque rocker who goes by the moniker MAWD (real name Madeline Mathews). Then, there's the other L.A.-based women who have been featured on playlists created and promoted by Derringer Discoveries and Turnip Music Radio. In this episode, no one Jumps the Shark and no one Crosses the Rubicon. Instead, today is a countdown of Team Derringers' five favorite songs by Livingmore, with commentary on each song provided by Alex. 01 Jul 2021 | Al Stewart Taught Me Everything & Why (EP18) | 00:31:57
Al Stewart is widely known for Year of the Cat and Time Passages, but he has given the world so much more: Al taught us about the complexities and pitfalls of love; Al introduced us to interesting historical figures such as Nostradamus whose only book, first published in 1555, still captivates us today; and Most importantly, Al taught Paul Derringer enough about World War II to get him through high school history with a solid B. In this episode, The Derringer Brothers take you on a journey that goes beyond Al's big hits. They connect Al to Kurt Vonnegut and Slaughterhouse Five. They play snippets of Al's epic Love Chronicles featuring Jimmy Page and Jon Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin. They even discuss the 450 year-old saying "All is Fair in Love and War" while tying it to a classic Al Stewart song. Will you be entertained? Hopefully, yes! Will Dave Derringer agree with any of Paul Derringer's Top 10 picks or will they need to invoke Dave Mason's We Just Disagree? Listen up and find out! And when all is said and done, after more than 54 years in the music business, has Al Stewart Jumped the Shark? Has he Crossed the Rubicon? Stay to the end and find out! 19 Mar 2022 | Listening to Ukraine (EP31) | 00:33:45
In this episode, Team Derringer shows support for Ukraine by sharing some of Ukraine's excellent rock and pop music with our listeners. With much appreciated help from Kyiv-based recording artist Pasha Black, Team Derringer starts with Ukraine's two Eurovision winners, one from 2004 and the other from 2016. Then, the Derringers reveal seven compelling Ukrainian Songs by seven Ukrainian recording artists, along with interesting insight on each featured artist and song. In this episode, we all come together to listen to and support Ukraine. No one will Jump the Shark and no one will Cross the Rubicon. 27 Sep 2024 | At the Starlight (EP70) - A Planting for the Future Episode | 00:11:40
FEATURED ARTIST In this episode, Team Derringer features At the Starlight, a South Florida-based indie rock quartet with members hailing from Cuba, Israel, Puerto Rico, and the state of Montana! The band At the Starlight derived their name from a song lyric by another group, which goes, "Throwing rocks at the starlight." The guitarist, Dari, was fond of the phrase and proposed it to the other band members—Anabel, Jino, and Jeremy—who agreed on it through a vote. Each month, Derringer Discoveries publishes the Turnip Music Radio (TMR) Top 25 chart featuring new songs voted on by our Turnip Tillers (i.e., special listeners), as selected from our TMR Compelling & New playlist. The songs on Compelling & New come to us three ways: (1) as direct submissions at our derringerdiscoveries.com website; (2) as submissions via Soundplate.com (UK), and (3) as recommendations made by our Turnip Tillers. 22 May 2022 | Life After Rush (EP34) | 00:53:36
For over 40 years, the band Rush defined progressive rock. Often far from the mainstream, they made their own way by pushing back against management, the record industry, and even their own fans. In this episode, Derringer Discoveries welcomes longtime friend and Rush super-fan, John B. Derringer (via Zoom) to help the team discuss what the surviving members of Rush, Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, have been doing since the passing of their long-time drummer and lyricist, Neil Peart. Also, Team Derringer chooses their favorite Rush songs from the band’s immense catalog and Rush aficionado, John B. Derringer weighs in on each member’s selection. John even shares a couple of his favorites as well! Post Episode Bonus: MAIAH WYNNE In March of 2022, Derringer Discoveries had the privilege of interviewing Maiah Wynne, a talented singer/songwriter/actor and, most recently, lead singer of Envy of None! Originally intended to be a loosely knit musical collaboration between Maiah Wynne and former Coney Hatch bassist, Andy Curran, the project soon grew into a full-fledged band once Curran’s friend and former Rush guitarist, Alex Lifeson, joined the band. Team Derringer interviewed Maiah just prior to the release of Envy of None’s eponymous album. Maiah joined Derringer Discoveries via Zoom from a remote town in Montana where she was on the set of a movie in production. Her original songs, collaborations, and covers run the gamut of indie-ballads to heavy hard rock. Maiah has won many national and international contests during her career and has developed songs and videos in support of the Apollo moon landing, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education for young boys and girls as well as such worthy causes as mental health awareness and MMIW USA (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women USA). In this episode, you'll hear how Maiah got started as a musician, about her David vs. Goliath battle with Lionsgate Entertainment Corporation, and her plans to release an upcoming album of her own original compositions. Help Maiah in her quest to return her videos to YouTube! To show your support for the work Maiah has done on her fan-composed music and videos for the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (the prequel to The Hunger Games), please sign the on-line petition. [Editor: Petition no longer on-line. See below.]
UPDATE! On 21 Jun 2022, we heard from Maiah: "[W]e've reached an agreement with Lionsgate, part of that agreement was to take down the petition against them... so the videos are back up and the songs are gone from everywhere else (except our Patreon!)" You can hear Maiah provide her own update on YouTube!

16 Oct 2022 | Ukraine’s In.Vade (EP39) | 00:22:24
While the world has watched in horror at Russia’s evil invasion of Ukraine, the people of Ukraine fight for victory but wish for peace. Still, out of the chaos of war comes compelling music. In this episode, Team Derringer had the honor and pleasure of interviewing a Kyiv-based rock band, In.Vade, featuring guitarist-producer Ilia Kaplunenko and vocalist Elisabeth (Lisa) Shefer. The interview took place via Zoom on September 5, 2022. At the time of our interview, the war was relatively distant from Kyiv; however, since then, Russia has launched artillery into civilian areas of major Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv. Team Derringer (Paul, Laura, Alton, and Dave) share their top five songs by In.Vade while Ilia and Lisa reveal the history and creative processes behind creating their music. Hear their musical influences and learn how they even wrote a song with plans for a major Ukrainian artist to sing and record with them… unbeknownst to him at the time. Please join all of us here at Derringer Discoveries in praying for safety and peace for the people of Ukraine and especially for our friends, Ilia and Lisa. 16 Nov 2024 | Hitmaker Dean Friedman (EP 74) | 00:24:23
Attention, dear listeners! This episode carries a few advisory warnings. We're delving into content that features a song peppered with a spicy word or two and discussions that may not be appropriate for a younger audience. It's not exactly "shield your grandma's ears" material, but it's certainly not kindergarten fare. Consider this episode to have a "PG-13" rating—there's a bit of mischief, but all in good fun. Our squeaky-clean reputation? Well, it's taking a tiny holiday! If what you hear doesn't offend you, then you may end up laughing with us. Is Derringer Discoveries now a comedy podcast? With the hitmaker Dean Friedman joining us, the answer is a definite yes! If you're not chuckling throughout this episode, perhaps it's time to see if your internal laugh meter needs a tune-up. Additionally, we delve into Dean Friedman's 2005 UK tour, which nearly came to a halt due to a cannabis controversy! Can you say scandalous? Indeed, it was so scandalous that 39 of the 40 venues canceled upon learning of Dean's plans! We give a shout-out to the one venue in Scotland that supported Dean amidst the uproar. But this is not the worst of it! In this episode, we analyze a song featuring a teenage protagonist who was (and may still be) a frequent visitor to the Golden Arches. A song so troubling that, in 1982, it was actually banned by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and it derailed Dean's career. This episode also features a mix of positive, family-friendly content. For instance, we discuss how the vegetarian protagonist in Dean Friedman's international Top 40 hit "Ariel" influenced Paul Derringer's romantic life. Tune in to the episode to discover more! We also learn of Dean's 44-year marriage to the love of his life, Alison. How many famous recording artists can make this claim? We don't know! (That's why we're asking.) Furthermore, we reflect on Dean's illustrious 47+ year career in the music business, minus the almost 20 years he was exiled on a remote desert island (well, not an actual desert island - just New Jersey) after being banned by the BBC in 1982. Besides the US and Canada Top 40 hit "Ariel," Dean also scored two Top 40 hits in the UK, with one reaching #3 in 1978. Interestingly, the same song banned by the BBC in 1982 was eventually covered by Canada's Barenaked Ladies and then it became a US Top 40 hit for another recording artist! That artist took it all the way to #1 in Norway. What happens next after you've written a #1 hit? Well, if you're Dean, you license the song to one of the biggest corporations in the world and it becomes a major radio and television commercial. To seal the deal, Dean agreed to revise the age of the person with whom the protagonist is in love, even though they were originally both the same age! Furthermore, you can no longer identify anyone in the song as a virgin. Gone is the purity! And no more polyester, which is how Dean described the clothing worn by the Golden Arches employee in the original version! US listeners have likely heard the commercial, a snippet of which is included in this episode. It's best enjoyed with a cup of coffee, which will become clear upon listening. After experiencing this fun-filled episode, you will have the opportunity to see Dean Friedman "live" in concert. Starting in early 2025, Dean will be on tour in the US and then the UK. Find your nearest city, buy tickets, and tell Dean that you heard him on Derringer Discoveries. You can do it right here: Dean Friedman 2025 US Tour by Concerts, Inc. | Eventbrite For those willing to journey to Charlottesville, Virginia (US), Dean's 2025 tour will feature a stop at Derringer Discoveries' Park Street Coffee House. 16 Aug 2022 | Orbison to Jeremy (EP37) | 00:23:19
Is it true that, up until now, Paul Derringer has resisted covering the legendary Roy Orbison simply because Paul has trouble saying Orbison's first name? Is it also true that Jeremy Lublin of Jeremy & The Harlequins from Brooklyn, New York, forced Paul's hand by requesting to be paired with Orbison for this episode? Listen in and find out as Paul makes his midnight confession out loud for all to hear! In this episode, Laura, Alton, Dave, and Paul (a.k.a. Team Derringer) utilize Spotify to conduct a witty, fast-paced, fact-based, snippet-filled countdown of Roy Orbison's All-Time Top Five songs. Along the way, members of Team Derringer invoke the mysterious Derringer Handbook whenever it suits their needs, even though Laura Derringer questions the Handbook's very existence. Next, citing their personal favorites and culminating with the #1 choice by the Turnip Tillers (i.e., special Derringer Discoveries listeners) as featured on the Turnip Music Radio Top 25 playlist, Team Derringer reveals the Top Five songs by Jeremy & The Harlequins. For each song revealed, front man Jeremy Lublin (a.k.a. Jeremy Fury) offers exclusive insight into each song's lyrics and background. If you are a fan of Jeremy & The Harlequins, you will gain new appreciation for their songcraft and hypnotic delivery. If you have not yet heard of them, we predict that you will fall in love with their infectious songs. The time to grab on is now as they are about to embark on their next tour, starting September 2022. If, after hearing this episode, you do not immediately find yourself spontaneously and joyously exploring the catalogs of these two impeccable artists (Orbison and Jeremy), then we - Team Derringer - have failed in our never-ending quest to help you discover and re-discover the best of what music has to offer! 09 Jan 2022 | Sweden’s Biggest Export: Reunited After 40 Years! (EP28) | 00:38:08
The Derringer Brothers - Alton, Dave, and Paul - welcome a new member to the team: Laura Derringer. They are now The Derringers (or Team Derringer). The Derringers usually don’t talk about Money, Money, Money, which happens to be a hit song by ABBA, the world-renowned pop rock band featured in this episode. However, since ABBA is from Stockholm, Sweden, the same place that is home to Spotify, the Derringers have been vigorously debating which entity is the bigger Swedish export: ABBA or Spotify! Going against Spotify is the fact that, in FY2020, they posted a €581 million loss and FY2021 is not yet public. In ABBA’s corner, the following factors give them a financial edge:
To celebrate the return of ABBA, the Derringers will undertake the following five tasks: (1) Reveal ABBA's Top Seven songs, as selected by ABBA-superfan Vivian and the four members of ABBA, as well as listener streams on Spotify; (2) Review the album Voyage, ABBA's first new collection in 40 years, and their upcoming ABBA-tar tour, scheduled to start in May 2022; (3) Consider whether Agnetha or Frida is the better singer; (4) Answer whether or not ABBA Jumped the Shark; and (5) Did they Cross the Rubicon? The Derringers will relay interesting trivia, such as: (1) Why did Saturday Night Live (SNL) post a disclaimer on the TV screen during ABBA's performance in 1975? (2) What song sparked ABBA-mania in Australia? (3) Why did three of the members of ABBA sue their manager Stig Anderson? (4) Why didn't Frida join them in the lawsuit? In addition, Derringer Discoveries will introduce you to a fantastic Swedish recording artist named Mats Dernánd. Plus, the Post-Episode Bonus will feature Monique Angele, an up & coming singer-songwriter from Canada who now calls ABBA-mania Australia home. And at the very end, Derringer Discoveries will reveal the #1 song on The Turnip Music Radio (TMR) Top 25 for the month of January 2022. All of the songs discussed in this episode are included on Sweden's Biggest Export: Reunited After 40 Years! playlist. Send your feedback to feedback@derringerdiscoveries.com. 19 Jul 2021 | The Beatles 10 Worst Songs & Why (EP19) | 00:36:03
Is there anything new to say about The Beatles? In this episode, The Derringer Brothers discuss The Beatles worst songs. Paul Derringer takes you through his Top 10 list of The Beatles worst while Dave Derringer and Paddy Derringer weigh in, sometimes agreeing and other times invoking the Dave Mason song We Just Disagree. It would be sheer folly for anyone to say that The Beatles Jumped the Shark or Crossed the Rubicon. The Derringer Brothers make it clear that they are big fans of The Beatles, but even the best band in the history of rock music has a few clunkers. Listen up and decide for yourself! 15 Mar 2023 | A John Prine Tribute with Jeff Sweatman (EP44) | 00:29:47
In this Derringer Discoveries episode, we honor legendary American songwriter John Prine. John’s songs were often humorous and witty – sometimes they were rebellious and full of social commentary on everyday life in America. He regaled us with his music from the early 70s until his death on April 7, 2020, from COVID-related complications. This episode is a tribute to Mr. Prine – a Chicago postman turned modern-day troubadour. Team Derringer is joined by Jeff Sweatman who spearheaded a tribute album to John Prine that featured over 20 artists’ interpretations of John Prine’s hits. The project culminated on October 23, 2022, with a fantastic outdoor concert in Charlottesville, Virginia, attended by over 700 fans. Many of the artists featured on the album performed for the sold-out crowd. The album is aptly named, “All the Best… from 6 Feet Away: A Charlottesville Tribute to John Prine.” Jeff shares the background behind five of Team Derringer’s favorite songs from the album and explains what he sees for the future of radio, having been a radio disc jockey and producer for over 30 years. You can listen to side-by-side versions of John’s original songs and Team Derringer’s Top 5 picks from “All the Best… from 6 Feet Away: A Charlottesville Tribute to John Prine” on the accompanying playlist: “Check Out: John Prine” – only available on Spotify. 16 Apr 2021 | Fleetwood Mac Won’t Stop & Why - Part B (EP14) | 00:39:18
In Part A (Episode 10), Paul & Dave Derringer discussed the first seven years of Fleetwood Mac. In this Part B episode, with help from Special Guest Kathy, The Derringer Brothers debate the five albums released by the classic Fleetwood Mac line-up consisting of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood. In addition to providing the world with some great music, this line-up of Fleetwood Mac - the classic five - also unwittingly became a textbook example of a dysfunctional musical family, a band full of discord, strife, heartbreak, and palpable angst. The classic five increasingly couldn't work together - they couldn't even be in the same room with each other, but the world demanded (and continues to demand) that they each put on a brave face and go out there to give the people what we want. Taking the band up to the present, Paul & Dave also briefly note Fleetwood Mac's ever evolving line-up and their intermittent releases after the classic period. Don't worry, The Derringer Brothers keep it upbeat and brisk. At the end, they weigh in on whether or not Fleetwood Mac "Jumped the Shark." They also introduce the listeners to a new Derringer Discoveries category of musical output: what it means to "Cross the Rubicon." The songs discussed in this episode can be found at Fleetwood Mac Won't Stop Playlist B. Contact Paul & Dave at derringerdiscoveries@gmail.com and follow Derringer Discoveries on your favorite digital platform. Stay for the post-episode bonus track and hear Dave talk about the volcanic water given to him by Paul during the recording of this episode. They also include another snippet of the digital single Music Box Killer by Ho Jo Fro, the same band behind the Derringer Discoveries' theme song, Your Sister's Room. Support a struggling group of musical misfits by including their songs on your favorite playlists and sharing with your friends. Sharing is good and encouraged.

08 Sep 2021 | Taylor Swift‘s Top 10 Stone-Cold Classics & Why (EP21) | 00:36:59
Since 2006, Taylor Swift has released 179 songs spanning nine studio albums. Now that she has regained the copyrights to her first five albums, she is re-recording them one by one. You will know the new ones by the caption Taylor's Version in parentheses after each re-recorded song title. In this Derringer Discoveries episode, Paul Derringer is joined by Rylan Derringer who is subbing for Dave Derringer. While counting down his Top 10 favorite Taylor Swift songs, Paul provides insight into copyrights versus phonographic rights and why Taylor is re-recording Taylor Swift (2006), Fearless (2008), Speak Now (2010), Red (2012), and 1989 (2014). Joining Paul and Rylan is a panel of three (Delaney Derringer, Layton Derringer, and Abbey Derringer). Each member of the panel, as well as Rylan, will let Paul know if he picks a song not deserving to be in the Top 10. Each time a panelist or Rylan agrees with Paul's pick, a bell rings. Does the bell ever ring five times? Listen up and find out. The ultimate question is do you agree or disagree? Adding to your listening enjoyment is Abbey Derringer who provides insight on how each of Paul's Top 10 picks fared on various music charts, worldwide. 26 Mar 2021 | Blondie to XTC: The Best of New Wave & Why (EP13) | 00:51:00
Using humor, unique insights, and brotherly love, in this episode Paul & Dave Derringer take you on a musical journey through the best of New Wave, covering almost 50 songs that have stood the test of time. From Blondie to XTC, Paul & Dave hand-pick 10 quintessential New Wave artists and, with help from a few special listeners, consider the best three songs from each artist for the years 1977 to 1983. With much debate and sharp differences of opinion, they collectively ponder "The Best of New Wave." Tune in for the unexpected as Dave declares that one of Paul's selected bands is a real dog! You may find yourself sometimes disagreeing with their choices, but that's part of the fun. 04 May 2021 | Ann & Nancy Wilson Are The Heart Of Rock & Roll & Why (EP15) | 00:29:27
From 1976 to 1993, the band Heart, featuring Ann & Nancy Wilson, put 20 songs on the American Rock & Roll Top 40 charts. In this episode, Dave Derringer picks and discusses 10 of the 20 hit songs. Dave's 10 are the hits that Ann and/or Nancy had a hand in writing. While regaling us with the 10 Wilson-penned hits, Dave also relays a number of interesting stories about Heart, including the one where the band Nazareth unwittingly had a hand in crafting Heart's classic hit "Barracuda." This is why The Derringer Brothers decided to include two of Nazareth's songs on the Ann & Nancy Wilson Playlist. In true brotherly fashion, Paul Derringer manages to mess with Dave's perfect 10-song strategy by slipping in two additional songs. One song, "Bebe Le Strange," bubbled under the charts at #109. Paul and Dave explain what it means when something "bubbles under," a legitimate Billboard-coined phrase. In addition, Dave explains the definition of "rung" and mockingly credits Paul as being the originator of the phrase "sniffing the charts." Listen up to learn what it means when a band's single climbs a rung and is sniffing the charts. It's actually a good thing! Paul's second monkey-wrench involves a song written for Ann & Nancy by Martin Page and Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin. Not only was this single the first of Heart's two #1 hits, it was also Nancy Wilson's rare opportunity to shine as lead vocalist. Nancy has a good voice, but The Derringer Brothers agree that it's Ann who has one of the best voices in Rock & Roll. Period. The songs discussed in this episode can be found on the Ann & Nancy Wilson Playlist. Click the hyperlink and "follow" the playlist on Spotify. Contact Paul & Dave at derringerdiscoveries@gmail.com and "follow" Derringer Discoveries on your favorite digital platform. Stay for a post-episode bonus snippet of the new digital single In Rivermont by Paul's indie-band Ho Jo Fro. In addition, please add In Rvermont and Music Box Killer to your favorite playlists. While not in the same stratospheric league as Heart, in just a few months Music Box Killer and other Ho Jo Fro songs have streamed thousands times. Also, click here to watch budding director Danny Wagner's Music Box Killer video on YouTube. Ho Jo Fro provides the theme song (Your Sister's Room) for Derringer Discoveries. From 1970 to 1974, for 96 episodes, there was a wildly popular musical sitcom television show that aired in the United States. The show was called The Partridge Family. 15 Feb 2024 | Foo Fighters (EP55) | 00:28:52
After the tragic demise of one of the most critically acclaimed grunge bands of the early 1990s, a new music project arose. Originally intended as a solo endeavor by a talented multi-instrumentalist (and former Nirvana drummer), Dave Grohl, the debut Foo Fighters album captured the interest of music industry executives. Grohl had intended the Foo Fighters moniker to provide him with a bit of anonymity; however, he soon realized that a full band would soon be required to support the attention-grabbing endeavor. Slowly a full line-up of talented musicians coalesced around its founding member and primary songwriter. By the time the band released its sophomore album, they were landing singles on music charts worldwide. Over the years, the Foo Fighters have won more than 10 Grammy Awards and continue to crank out chart topping singles and terrific – and often humorous – supporting videos. 13 Jun 2021 | The Killers Have Not Peaked & Why (EP17) | 00:36:00
More popular in the UK than in the US, The Killers are an American band from Las Vegas fronted by singer, keyboardist, and lyricist Brandon Flowers. In this episode of Derringer Discoveries, Paul & Dave Derringer are joined by two special guests, Augie and Paddy, who take on the Derringer surname as the four discuss The Killers' six studio albums spanning 2004 to 2020 in anticipation of their seventh studio album (See Episode 20 for The Killers' Pressure Machine). While relaying intriguing stories about The Killers and life in general, the Derringers pick and discuss their favorite songs and they ponder whether it is better to be human or a dancer, as posited by Brandon in the classic song Human. Near the end of the episode, they debate whether The Killers have Jumped the Shark. And, they dip their toes into the Rubicon, but dare they cross it? Stay for a post-episode explanation as to the meaning behind In Rivermont by Ho Jo Fro, the same band who provide the Derringer Discoveries theme song, Your Sister's Room. 16 May 2023 | CSNY: Rock & Roll’s First Supergroup with Special Guest Jon Tyler Wiley (EP46) | 00:25:54
From the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, there was a large counterculture movement in the United States. It was a time when the war in Vietnam was escalating and there was vast social tension in society overall. But it was also a time of free love, experimentation, alternative lifestyles, and some terrific music! It was from an area just outside of Los Angeles, California – an area known as Laurel Canyon – that Rock and Roll’s first supergroup arose: Crosby, Still, Nash & Young. Indie recording artist Jon Tyler Wiley joins Team Derringer as they debate when and where the founding members of CSN first lifted their voices in harmony. Listen in as Laura, Paul, Alton, and Dave pick their favorite CSNY band member and share their favorite songs written by David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and/or Neil Young. Today’s special guest will even provide you with a musical treat you’re sure to love. 18 Jun 2023 | Tina Boonstra: Perpetual Beginner (EP47) | 00:28:13
Growing up the child of missionary parents, Tina moved from the UK, to the Netherlands, to South Africa, and finally back to the UK. The transient nature of her childhood prevented Tina from feeling a sense of belonging and she often felt insulated from the outside world. To entertain herself, she played music with her family members and wrote her first song at age 11. She blossomed as a musician shortly after university when a friend’s brother, a music producer, wanted to record her. Tina expected her songs to find their home in the church halls she was so familiar with, but she soon found herself performing the open mic circuit in and around London. After connecting with producer Trevor Michael, Tina found her musical voice and solidly established her sound. Tina is a master storyteller. Her songs run the gamut from the deeply painful experiences to the hope one can find in the simple things of life. Join Team Derringer (Laura, Paul, and Alton), as they explore the stories behind their five favorite Tina Boonstra songs, hear of Tina’s early life, and discover the exciting projects that Tina has planned next. Explore musical snippets from Tina's songs and enjoy the stories behind the tracks on Tina’s latest album, “Circle back, start again.” For more information about Derringer Discoveries, Team Derringer, or our music promotion affiliate, Turnip Music Radio, please visit https://www.derringerdiscoveries.com. 18 Apr 2023 | The Beatles’ Best 1962 - 1965 (EP45) | 00:01:17
If you're a long-time Derringer Discoveries listener, you'll recall that In Episode 19, we weighed in on The Beatles' 10 Worst Songs. In response to that episode, Sammy Vulcano, a solo recording artist from the Syracuse, New York (US) area, reached out to Team Derringer. Sammy shared that he is a superfan of The Beatles. He told Team Derringer that he had recently combined his songwriting talents with those of his lifelong friend and fellow musician, Anthony Micaroni, to write, record, and release a trilogy of songs about The Beatles from 1962 to 1965. Intrigued by this concept, Team Derringer decided to explore the collaboration between Sammy and Anthony and invited them to join Team Derringer (Laura, Paul, Alton, and Dave) as they delve into this period of The Beatles' legacy -- a time that is often overshadowed by the brilliance of The Beatles' catalog released after 1965. Assisted by special guests Sammy and Anthony, Team Derringer shares the tale of The Beatles in Hamburg 1962, along with snippets of their biggest hits from 1962 to 1965. The Beatles had just one hit in 1962 and it was only in the UK. They didn't conquer the US until January 1964, but by 1965, they were dominating the music charts worldwide. Join Team Derringer and their guests as they discover obscure, interesting trivia about The Beatles. Along the way, you'll hear snippets of The Beatles' two hit singles sung with German lyrics. Additionally, Team Derringer, Sammy, and Anthony will discuss Kurt Cobain's posthumous hit single, a cover of Sammy's favorite 1963 song by The Beatles. Kurt's cover has streamed almost 59 million times! And of course, Team Derringer will play snippets of the trilogy of songs by Sammy and Anthony that sparked the idea for this episode. These three songs by Sammy Vulcano and Anthony Micaroni are available on all the major digital streaming platforms, such as Spotify. Derringer Discoveries is the curator of a popular Spotify playlist called The Beatles Inspired. If you are a recording artist or a listener who knows of a song that belongs on this playlist, subscribe to our free newsletter at https://www.derringerdiscoveries.com and then send us a link to the song at feedback@derringerdiscoveries.com. For a band that has had such a large impact on pop culture for the last decade, Lord Huron has remained under-the-radar of many music listeners. Starting out in Michigan as the brainchild of Ben Schneider, a multi-talented artist, Lord Huron has become a hugely influential indie rock band whose music has appeared in numerous films, commercials, television shows, and in series for NBC, The CW, Netflix, HBO, and Showtime. College Rock exploded on the music scene sometime during 1983 and 1984; however, the infrastructure for the musical style had been established almost 20 years earlier – not by a musician, band, or other influential figure – but by a government agency in the U.S. Join Team Derringer as they explore the birth of College Rock and the preeminent band at its epicenter: R.E.M. The eclectic, hook-heavy, and guitar-jangly sound emerged from the new-wave and post-punk music scenes of the late 1970s spreading from Athens, Georgia, throughout the U.S. and was soon adopted by bands in the U.K. Laura, Alton, and Paul (Team Derringer) are joined by singer-songwriter/guitarist/recording artist Bryan Cooper from Fukuoka, Japan, by way of Yorkshire, England. All the hosts are huge fans of R.E.M. – mostly favoring the music that was the band recorded during the I.R.S. Records years. Did R.E.M. ever Jump the Shark? If so, did they Cross the Rubicon? 30 Apr 2022 | Genesis vs. Gabriel (EP33) | 00:36:46
Between formation in 1967 until 1977, the English progressive rock band Genesis lost a total of eight band members. By 1977, they were down to three: keyboardist Tony Banks; bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford; and drummer/singer Phil Collins. These are the three who, in 1977, shot to worldwide superstar status, peaking in 1991 after securing 17 now-classic hits in the interim. These are the same three musicians who, in March 2022, played their final live performance, thus bringing Genesis to an end after 55 years of on and off and on again existence. Meanwhile, one of the eight members who departed Genesis in the early years was Peter Gabriel who also had a stellar career, giving the world an impressive number of now-classic hit songs. In this episode, you will learn which #1 hit by Gabriel knocked a song by Genesis out of the #1 spot on the music charts. Think about this: An artist knocked his former band out of the #1 spot. How many times in the history of Rock & Roll has this happened? Listeners: Exactly once! Listen up to find out which two songs were involved. As you will hear in this episode, pundits have long held that music lovers cannot be both a Genesis fan and a Gabriel fan. The kitchen-sink logic is that you either love Genesis or you love Gabriel. You cannot love both, because they are diametrically opposed. In this episode, Team Derringer conducts a countdown of five classic songs. In so doing, each Derringer reveals whether they prefer Genesis or Gabriel and then they relay their favorite song by their preferred artist. This takes the four Derringers from #5 to #2 and then for the #1 honor, they call on special listener and recording artist Rose Alaimo from Ithica, New York to reveal whether she prefers Genesis or Gabriel and then to give us her favorite song, which also happens to be the highest streaming song on Spotify by her preferred artist. Stick around to find out the artist and the song! Team Derringer also weighs in on whether either artist Jumped the Shark! And, did they Cross the Rubicon? Listeners: You are in for a surprise! In today's Post-Episode Bonus, Team Derringer features recording artist Mats Dernand, counting down some of Derringer Discoveries' favorite songs by the Swedish recording artist. Listeners will remember Mats from Episode 28 when he received a special shout out. This time around, Mats gave Derringer Discoveries an exclusive interview. All of the songs mentioned in this episode can be found on the accompanying Spotify playlist, Genesis vs. Gabriel, including a song by Rose Alaimo and a number of songs by Mats Dernand. "Liking" the playlist helps Derringer Discoveries. Streaming the playlist generates royalties payable by Spotify to every artist featured on the playlist. In this episode, Team Derringer explores a rare juxtaposition: the improbable convergence of two highly disparate styles of music. In 2004, two luminaries in their respective genres came together to make magic. One is a dynamic frontman for one of the most well-known rock bands of all time, while the other is a highly sought-after collaborator, solo artist, and leader of an extremely popular bluegrass band. In 2007, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant released their Grammy-winning album, Raising Sand. The critically acclaimed pairing produced studio gold which later turned into platinum. Fourteen years later, the duo released their second album, Raise the Roof. Could they replicate the magic? Listen in to find out! Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Matt Saxton from East Sussex, United Kingdom, joins Team Derringer as special guest-host to explore the Plant and Krauss’ fantastic interpretation of blues, country, soul, gospel, and old-timey songs. To top off the winning formula, the pair recruited Grammy award winning T. Bone Burnett, a highly successful record producer, guitarist, and songwriter. Burnett is known for musical endeavors in films such as O Brother Where Art Thou?, Cold Mountain, Walk the Line, and Crazy Heart. As a special treat, Matt Saxton shares some of his own music with the Derringer Discoveries listeners. Be sure to check out this entertaining episode. 09 Nov 2021 | Bowie Bowie Bowie Everywhere (EP24) | 00:33:52
Our listeners in the UK might conclude that David Bowie had five Number One hit singles. Meanwhile, our listeners in the US will say that Bowie had just two Number Ones. However, here at Derringer Discoveries, we cater to the entire world and worldwide, Bowie had 11 Number One hit singles while he was living and one more Number One hit single posthumously. Listen up as two of The Derringer Brothers - Alton and Paul - discuss and play snippets from all of Bowie's Number One hits from around the world while covering his "classic period" from 1969 to 1986. Does Bowie Jump the Shark or Cross the Rubicon? Stay to the end and discover Alton's shocking revelation. Bowie's sole posthumous Number One hit from 2016 is just one of many mind-blowing discussion points raised by Alton and Paul during this episode. For example, Radio Three Chart (LP3) is the oldest and longest-running music chart in Poland. On a weekly basis, Marek and Piotr - Polskie Radio's alternating hosts - countdown Warsaw, Poland's top hit singles. Marek and Piotr, along with their dedicated listeners, are the ones who decided to give Bowie his 12th Number One hit single! Kudos to LP3! But, what does LP3 have to do with Derringer Discoveries? Well, in keeping with the LP3 spirit and perhaps off-their-rockers, in this episode, Derringer Discoveries officially unveils The Turnip Music Radio (TMR) Top 25. During the inaugural month of October 2021, the first TMR Number One hit single was Harder Than It Should Be by the New Haven, Connecticut duo Goodnight Moonshine. Today's Post-Episode Playout (i.e., Bonus) features an interview with an impressive, wonderfully-melodic band from Detroit Michigan called The Legal Matters. In addition, please visit the Turnip Music Radio (TMR) Top 25, a music chart by Derringer Discoveries, available on Spotify. Updated monthly, this chart reflects our current 25 favorite, new songs by recording artists worldwide with a focus on fresh folk, adult rock, alternative rock, rock & roll, and power pop. 23 Oct 2021 | Toad the Wet Sprocket: Not Just Another 90s Band & Why (EP23) | 00:37:42
Almost 35 years ago, four high school friends bonded over their love for making music – and not just any music. They came right out of the gate making top-notch alternative pop-rock songs but, desperate for a band name prior to their first gig, they jokingly adopted a silly moniker from a Monty Python skit: Toad the Wet Sprocket. It was a joke that went on too long – and it stuck. In this episode, the Derringer Brothers (Paul and Alton) explore Toad the Wet Sprocket’s (TTWS) pre-breakup hits from 1989’s Bread and Circus through 1997’s Coil – followed by the band’s 16-year hiatus from recording. During the “break up years,” the band members stayed in touch, matured, occasionally played music together, and finally put aside their differences to reform in 2010. In 2013, the band released the crowd-funded album, New Constellation, proving that the band’s fans were still around and longing for new TTWS music. The band’s 2016 EP, Architect of the Ruin, followed. The Derringer Brothers recap seeing TTWS on tour over the last few years and explore their top three favorite songs from Toad’s latest album, Starting Now. How does the album compare to classic Toad? Listen up to find out! Join Paul and Alton as they explain how TTWS survived the 90s, how the band differs from typical 90s bands, and what the future looks like since losing their long-time drummer. The post-episode playout features a band from Baltimore and Florida known as We’re About 9 (WA9). Hear the story of the band’s genesis and how they are earning royalties from major airlines. In addition, Paul will relay his Top 3 WA9 songs and Brian Gundersdorf of WA9 will provide interesting insight into each of Paul's picks. Enjoy the music heard on this episode by listening to the Toad the Wet Sprocket: Not Just Another 90s Band & Why playlist. After three months and hundreds of votes from around the world, the results of the Derringer Discoveries Top 5 Classic Rock Songs ballot have been tallied! To help present the Top 5 Classic Rock Songs, Team Derringer recruited members of M&R Rush, a classic rock band out of Chicago, to join them for this Classic Rock episode. In the United States, the definition of Classic Rock comprises rock music ranging generally from the mid-1960s through the mid-1990s, primarily focusing on commercially successful blues rock and hard rock popularized in the 1970s Album Oriented Rock format. Do you agree with this definition? We asked members of M&R Rush, Marty Mardirosian and John McFarland, to weigh in on each of the Top 5 songs and share the story of their band’s formation. We also wanted to know what it was like to play in a popular rock band in Chicago during what is now considered the heart of the Classic Rock era. Listen in while Paul, Alton, and Laura (Team Derringer) share interesting tidbits about the artists behind each of the Top 5 Classic Rock Songs and share some song snippets you’re sure to recognize. Marty and John also regale us with their connection to another highly popular Classic Rock band from Chicago: Styx. 02 Oct 2021 | Styx: Tommy vs. Dennis & Why (EP22) | 00:38:06
Would you believe us if we told you that, more than 40 years after their heyday, the band Styx from Chicago is better than ever? Listen up as we quickly recap Styx's 1977 to 1983 so-called classic years, their break-up in 1984, their post-breakup solo efforts and then, their amazing comeback leading up to their 17th studio album, Crash of the Crown, released June 2021. The numerous music snippets come at you fast and furious. The banter is humorous and insightful. Alton Derringer fights for Tommy Shaw. Paul Derringer fights for Dennis DeYoung. Unfortunately, only one - Tommy or Dennis - will prevail. In addition, Alton and Paul review and discuss Crash of the Crown, each picking the Top Three Best Songs from the album, as well as relaying the Fans Choice, based on Spotify streams. 24 Dec 2021 | Ollabelle - Rediscovery & Revival (EP27) | 00:31:06
Today’s installment is a Derringer Discoveries rediscovery episode. A rediscovery episode highlights a band that the Derringers love – but, it may not have registered on your radar. We feel the band featured in this episode is significant enough to introduce to you, our listener. This band was made up of musical artists who continue to have an impact on Americana, folk, gospel, film soundtracks, commercials, and – of course – rock and roll. The band coalesced during the aftermath of 9/11. It formed during a time when America was looking for peace, solace, and camaraderie. Stick around for our Post-Episode Bonus which features an excellent husband-and-wife duo, Eben Pariser and Molly Venter, known as Goodnight Moonshine. 22 Nov 2022 | Bowie to The Vow (EP40) | 00:25:43
In the late 1960s, a young Graham Trust from Liverpool, England, learned the foundations of vocal performance from his father, a well-respected community choirmaster. As young Graham grew, he was enthralled with the angst-ridden sound of the punk bands blaring from the radio – in particular those played by BBC Radio 2’s renowned disc jockey, John Peel. As a teenager, Graham combined his love of vocal harmonies with the sounds of the burgeoning punk scene and founded a post-punk band with schoolmates, notably a lad named Martyn Gilbert. From 1989 to 1991, Graham, Martyn, and drummer Tony Potter achieved regional fame performing as the band, The Vow – but it was only a short time later that the band split up. During the ensuing years, Graham continued to hone his craft as a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist and followed his passion for music. Having built a large portfolio of promising original songs and now having the resources required for proper recording and music production, thanks to steady employment in the corporate world, he entered the recording studio in 2008 with the intent to share his musical creations with the world. Writing all the songs, performing all the vocals, and recording many of the instruments, The Vow is the brainchild of Graham Trust. Through the years he has enlisted a revolving roster of musicians, including his former mates Martyn Gilbert, Tony Potter, and onetime bassist Nick Reynolds. Joining Graham on recent recordings is producer, musician, and studio owner, Simon Denny - favored for his orchestral arrangements. In this episode, Graham Trust of The Vow joins Team Derringer to discuss his fascination with songcraft, his early musical influences – including The Jam – and his latest song, Dude for David, a musical tribute to David Bowie. Team Derringer counts down their top five favorite songs by The Vow and, with very little effort, coaxes Graham into sharing the history of each. We think you’ll enjoy this fun and entertaining interview with Graham Trust of The Vow and, on top of that, we’re sure you’ll fall in love with The Vow’s compelling music along the way.
