23 Mar 2020A Holistic Nutritional Approach to Psoriasis with Jessica Simonis of Psoriasis Eczema Clinic00:43:19

Men and women develop psoriasis at equal rates. Although psoriasis comes and goes over time, it’s a lifelong condition. A lack of public understanding about psoriasis causes many people with this condition to feel isolated and ostracized.

Just as with psoriasis, people with eczema often experience off-and-on symptoms for many years. Understanding the differences between psoriasis and eczema can help recognise and appropriately treat both conditions.

In this podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Jessica Simonis of Psoriasis Eczema Clinic.

Jessica is a Clinical Nutritionist and Western Herbalist, specialising in the holistic treatment of chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, acne and rosacea. Boasting over 14 years’ experience within the Complementary and Alternative Medicine field including clinical practice, education and presenting roles, content writing, research, journal editing and nutrition program development. She is passionate and dedicated to her profession.

Jessica practices at the Psoriasis Eczema Clinic where she received further training from Professor Michael Tirant in the field of Integrative Dermatology. Her expertise in nutritional and dietary medicine provides patients with a holistic approach to their chronic skin condition, addressing common triggers and comorbidities including digestive disorders/food intolerances, weight gain/obesity and cardiovascular health. Having experienced the debilitating effects of a chronic skin condition herself, Jessica shares a unique understanding with her patients and is highly motivated to achieve optimal results.

Join us as we dive into the holistic and nutritional approach to psoriasis and eczema.

27 Jul 2020Colourism and The Politics of Beauty with Zinnia Kumar01:00:25

Beauty and Fashion Industry is more diverse than ever. But is it diverse enough? In an era of makeup collections with 40 foundation colours and more spokesmodels of colour than ever before, diversity at the beauty counter would seem to be accepted, even celebrated. Yet if you ask influential makeup artists, hairstylists, fashion models and photographers about it, the answer is more likely: It’s a start.

Once upon a time, society considered that it knew what was beautiful: young, white, straight, cis, thin, symmetrical, Eurocentric and stereotypically feminine – plus long, golden hair, if at all possible, although exceptions might be made for the occasional raven-haired temptress. The principal elements were fairly constant and all of us got the message, measuring ourselves as lucky or lacking according to society’s stringent conditions. Blonde hair and blue eyes – tick; fat, frizzy-haired and freckled – could try harder.

Beauty was expensive, exacting and exclusive, leaving a select few basking in the sun, the rest of us out in the cold. There’s no doubt that diversity and inclusion have been a hot topic in the beauty world for the last few years.

And in this week’s podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Zinnia Kumar, Australian fashion model, colourism activist and published scientist in human evolutionary biology and ecology.

Zinnia was born and raised in Sydney, Australia to Indian parents. In 2019, Zinnia was named by Vogue India in the top 50 Most Influential Global Indians list and is a recipient of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award. She is an established Fashion Model having featured in Vogue (India & UK), Elle (UK), Harpers Bazaar (UK & India), Wonderland, Paper Magazine, Tank Magazine, Imprint and many more major fashion brands commercially.

Zinnia’s personal breadth of expertise ranges from Inclusivity, Sustainability, Fashion & Media, Empowerment, Industrial/Organisational & business psychology, education and decolonizing & deconstructing beauty and racial identities and dogma. With particular interest in combining Human Evolutionary Biology and sustainability with consumer/marketing and business psychology to create tangible quantifiable change. Zinnia has had a long term commitment & passion for empowerment, authentic representation, deconstructing beauty ideals and stigmatising narratives.

As a Beauty Activist Zinnia uses her platform to speak, write and educate people on topics such as Colorism, Challenging and Deconstructing Beauty Ideals, Increasing Authentic Ethnic Representation & Environmental Conservation & Sustainability.

Join us as Zinnia talks about diversity, inclusion, colourism and beauty more than skin deep.

11 Nov 2019Reconstructive Plastic Surgery with Dr Ross Farhadieh of Panthea Clinics00:30:11

If you’ve always thought cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery were one and the same, you’re not alone. A significant number of plastic surgeons choose to focus their practise on cosmetic surgery, and as such, the terms are often used interchangeably. But this is not technically correct. Cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are closely related specialities, but they are not the same.

In this podcast episode, Marnina will be speaking with Dr Ross Farhadieh.

Dr Ross Farhadieh is an internationally renowned cosmetic plastic and reconstructive surgeon with sub-specialities in facial aesthetic surgery, cosmetic breast surgery and microsurgical reconstructions.

How is Dr Farhadieh unique amongst his peers? First and foremost, he is triple board certified. This means that he has been rigorously assessed and examined by three independent Surgical Colleges, and deemed to show mastery of his plastic and reconstructive surgical skills. Secondly, Dr Farhadieh is the Chief Editor of the critically acclaimed and internationally hailed reference textbook of plastic surgery: Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery: Approaches and Techniques. His own contributions were chapters on breast augmentation, eyelid and facelift surgery. Due to its great success, Dr Farhadieh has again been appointed Chief Editor of a New Edition scheduled for publication by 2020.

Join us as we discover from Dr Farhadieh the biggest misconception about plastic surgery.

20 Apr 2020A Story of Losing Sight and Gaining Vision with Jess Van Zeil00:55:39

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Jess Van Zeil,  an eye-patch wearing, 26-year-old business owner, best-selling author and resilience expert.

Jess had lost her eye at the age of 22 due to an extremely rare form of cancer- conjunctival ocular melanoma. Conjunctival malignant melanoma is a pigmented lesion of the ocular surface. It is an uncommon but potentially devastating tumour that may invade the local tissues of the eye, spread systemically through lymphatic drainage and hematogenous spread, and recur in spite of treatment. Despite its severity, the rarity of available cases has limited the evidence for diagnosis and management.

With her battle with cancer, Jess learned a lot about resilience and the art of bouncing back. She realised she didn’t want anyone to face life’s challenges unarmed. The art and science of building resilience have become her passion.

That is why Jess developed the PATCH system which will give the skills and tools to grow and thrive when someone is faced with change. She has shared her story and the PATCH methodology on stages across Australia including the NAC in 2018 alongside Tony Robbins, Turia Pitt, Michelle Bridges and Naomi Simson.

In 2019 Jess’ book “Eye Won” was published internationally.

Join us in a special interview with Jess about the cause, treatments and misconceptions about conjunctival ocular melanoma. And hear Jess's incredible journey of courage, mindset and resilience.

07 Dec 2020Skin Cancer Surgery; What You Need to Know with Dr Frank Lin00:48:53

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer: each year, more than 13,000 Australians are diagnosed with melanoma and almost 980,000 new cases of non-melanoma skin cancers are treated. Skin cancer is mostly preventable, and there are effective treatment options available.

Skin cancer treatment depends on the type, its size and location and whether it has spread elsewhere. Surgery is the main treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer, although it may depend on one's individual circumstances.

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a specialist form of surgery used to treat non-melanoma skin cancers when:

  • it's felt there's a high risk of the cancer spreading or returning
  • the cancer is in an area where it would be important to remove as little skin as possible, such as the nose or close to the eyes

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Frank Lin of Eastern Plastic Surgery.

Dr Frank Lin is a Specialist Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon. He is a fully qualified member of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons and International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons after completing specialist plastic surgery training in Melbourne.

He is a regular speaker at major international conferences and has also been involved in numerous clinical trials for major pharmaceutical and medical device companies.

Dr Lin is involved in the teaching of specialist trainees and students at both Melbourne University and Monash University Medical Schools, as well as lecturing dermal sciences students at Victoria University.

03 Feb 2020Part One: Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Cutting with Julia Lalla-Maharajh OBE, Orchid Project Founder00:46:01

Female genital cutting (FGC) is a harmful practice involving full or partial removal or injury to a girl’s external genitals. On average, girls are subjected to FGC before the age of five, although this varies between different communities and can happen at any time from a girl’s birth to her adolescence.

FGC is not an obligation of any religion and has no known health benefits. Far from it, the practice can cause long-lasting physical and psychological damage for more than 200 million women and girls who are affected worldwide. In some cases, this can include death.

This week, in accordance with International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, Heal Thy Skin podcast will have a special three-part episode.

To start off, Marni will be speaking with Julia Lalla-Maharajh OBE, founder of Orchid Project.

Julia set up the Orchid Project having spent 18 years in the corporate transport sector. In 2008, she volunteered in Ethiopia, where she came to understand more about the devastating scale and impacts of FGC. In 2010, she led a panel discussing how to end FGC at the World Economic Forum in Davos and then spent time in Senegal and The Gambia, visiting communities and seeing incredible change happening at the grassroots level. In 2017 Julia was awarded an OBE for her work to end FGC.

Join us as we have travelled (virtually) around the globe to speak with advocates from London, California and North Carolina.

18 Jul 2022Faces of Dry Skin Conditions: Real Life Stories from Stephanie, Farah, Carly and Georgia00:36:15

There has been a stigma attached to skin conditions for centuries.

Those who have skin conditions have not only to cope with the effects of their diagnosis but also the reaction of others to their condition.

08 Mar 2021Food Chemical Intolerance; What you need to know with Ashli Templer of Yours Only®00:42:29

Some people are more sensitive to natural food chemicals and find when they eat large amounts of them, they experience distressing symptoms. The most common natural food chemicals that can cause unpleasant symptoms include salicylates, amines, and glutamate. Chemicals are found everywhere in nature, including in the food we eat and the water we drink. Some of these, like vitamins, contribute to maintaining good health, while others increase aroma and flavour and make food enjoyable.

How much you can tolerate will vary depending on how sensitive you are. Some people have a much lower tolerance threshold than others and will experience a reaction to smaller amounts. Others though, will find that levels build up over a few days before their tolerance threshold is breached and they experience symptoms. Chronic or recurrent symptoms can occur when small amounts of high-chemical foods are eaten regularly. When this happens levels build up in your system gradually and specific triggers are not obvious.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Ashli Templer, founder of Pep Creative, skincare brand Yours Only® and podcast Allergy Proof™.

Ash has been dealing with pesky intolerances and skin conditions since day dot, as well as Hashimoto's disease. In 2018 after discovering she has a food chemical intolerance and was unable to find any products that were skin, body and bathroom-approved, Yours Only® was born. A series of all-system skincare designed with allergies, intolerances, skin conditions and auto-immune diseases in mind, dressed in packaging that looks good enough for a #shelfie. Yours Only® seeks to help and inspire others to look after their bodies, with a % of the profit from each bottle sold going towards allergy research at RPAH Hospital, Sydney. On her mission to open the conversation, Ash then developed Allergy Proof™, a podcast dedicated to helping hard-working women with health issues get through life.

Don't miss this episode as Ash talks about the common misconceptions in allergies, topical skincare and food chemical intolerance.

21 Dec 2020Truths About Albinism with Oceanne Comtois00:35:08

Albinism is a condition that affects the production of melanin, the pigment that colours skin, hair and eyes.

1 out of every 17,000 people is living with albinism. Albinism carries with it myths in cultures throughout the world. These run the spectrum from the notion that those with albinism have magical powers to the belief that people with albinism must have red eyes. Their eyes usually are purple or grey which sometimes appears reddish in certain types of light.

Failure to destigmatise albinism, address racial discrimination and accommodate visual impairment, combined with bullying and risks of attacks, often results in a large number of people with albinism in isolation.

To wrap up Heal thy Skin's second season, Marni will be speaking with an exemplary woman- Oceanne Comtois.

Oceanne is a 22-year-old driven and enthusiastic TikTok star who creates lifestyle and educational content centred around her life being visually impaired and living with albinism.

09 Feb 2021Life with Lipoedema with Caroline Sprott of Lipödem Mode00:45:32

Lipoedema: No, it’s not a typo. It’s a real condition that’s often overlooked or confused with lymphoedema.

Nearly 370 million women across the globe live with Lipoedema. What is regularly associated with unruly weight gain in its initial stages can quickly spiral out of control if left undiagnosed. Often striking in a woman’s mid-20s, Lipoedema is a condition that leads to the excessive buildup of fat cells primarily in the arms and legs.

Lipoedema isn’t rare, but it’s rarely diagnosed. Most doctors think obesity, heart failure, kidney failure, liver disease, thyroid problems or medications cause the leg swelling or think it’s lymphoedema, which is swelling that usually occurs in one arm or leg. While lipoedema and lymphoedema both do involve swelling, that’s where their similarities end.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni travels virtually on the other side of the world to speak with Caroline Sprott. Germany's First Lipoedema Fashion Blogger and one of the hosts of Der Lipödem Podcast.

Ten years ago, after leaving from work experiencing excruciating pain, Caroline was diagnosed with lipoedema. The diagnosis ultimately made her a strong person, even if her journey towards acceptance was not always easy. Now, Caroline speaks in lymphatic events, models for compression campaigns while continuously raising awareness for the lipoedema community.

13 Jan 2020Appearance Activism with Carly Findlay01:19:50

Inclusion involves more than simply encouraging people; it requires making sure that adequate policies and practices are in effect in a community or organisation.

It means understanding the relationship between the way people function and how they participate in society and making sure everybody has the same opportunities to participate in every aspect of life to the best of their abilities and desires.

09 Nov 2020In Her Own Words: Living with CFS/ME with Georgina Wasdall, Disability Model and Actress00:56:24

No doubt, when an illness barges into your life unannounced and takes up residence, it can leave you feeling angry, defeated, and powerless.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a disabling and complex illness. People with ME/CFS are often not able to do their usual activities. At times, ME/CFS may confine them to bed. People with ME/CFS have overwhelming fatigue that is not improved by rest. ME/CFS may get worse after any activity, whether it’s physical or mental.

Despite the fact that ME/CFS can be as disabling as multiple sclerosis, heart disease and other chronic conditions, most of the general public is unaware of the impact it has on lives. On top of that, the misinformation perpetuated for decades about “chronic fatigue syndrome” has led to patients being negatively judged by others. Sadly, this often places additional strain on people who are already struggling to cope with such a complex and debilitating condition.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with an inspirational woman, Georgina Wasdall.

Georgina is a creative young woman living in the U.K. She's a model, aspiring actress and disability advocate represented by Zebedee Management. She is living with ME/CFS along with other associated conditions for the past 11 years. Georgina believes that everything happens for a reason as she does her best to stay positive in all circumstances.

She shares her story in hope, to help others living with ME/CFS and raise awareness. Finding and loving herself took awhile for Georgina that is why she shares her journey through body positivity, growing confidence, acceptance and being kind to herself.

Join us as Georgina proudly shares her story through all the trials and tribulations.

30 Mar 2020Rosacea Awareness Month with Dr Alice Rudd, Founder of Skindepth Dermatology00:28:29

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that can cause sensitivity, excessive flushing, persistent redness, broken capillaries and breakouts. Often times this condition is mistaken for allergies or acne. If left untreated, the condition can worsen. Symptoms often are triggered by certain behaviours, which are typically unique to each individual, that is why it’s important to understand the common triggers so you can treat the condition properly. Rosacea mainly affects the central areas of the face, such as the cheeks and nose. The disease can affect both adult men and women, usually after the age of 30. April is Rosacea Awareness Month. 03 May 2021CMN: More Than Just Moles with Cheryl Shaw, Living with Congenital Melanocytic Nevi (CMN)00:37:26

Congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) is a skin condition characterised by a dark, noncancerous skin patch (nevus) that is composed of pigment-producing cells called melanocytes. It is present from birth (congenital) or is noticeable soon after birth. The nevus may be small in infants, but it will usually grow at the same rate the body grows.

People with congenital melanocytic nevus may have more than one nevus (plural: nevi). The other nevi are often smaller than the giant nevus.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni travels virtually to the UK, to speak with Cheryl Shaw- a Mum, Model, Diversity Advocate and living with CMN.

Cheryl was born with giant congenital melanocytic naevus, a rare skin condition that causes large moles to appear all over the body.

CMN affected most of her life growing up. But now, she is on her journey of embracing her skin condition and helping others to also embrace their difference.

Don't miss this inspiring episode as Cheryl shares her story of acceptance, self-love and empowerment.

05 Apr 2021Rosy cheeks, Rosacea or something else? With Bethany Barnes and Kathryn Lock of The Rosy Club00:47:19

April is Rosacea Awareness Month.  According to the National Rosacea Society, the goal of Rosacea Awareness Month is to spread public education on this skin condition so that more people who may have rosacea seek medical help before it gets worse, and so those whose lives are affected can find greater public acceptance and understanding.

Research suggests that many people with rosacea may not be reconsulting with a healthcare professional after losing faith due to previous negative experiences with prescribed medications or even their dermatologist. As a result, many are left to adopt short-term approaches to treatment, choosing to self-treat with over-the-counter skin care products when flare-ups occur, rather than seeking advice from medical professionals.

As part of our ongoing commitment to raising awareness of rosacea and the hidden burden of this skin condition, Marni will be speaking with not just one— but two incredible rosacea advocates. Bethany Barnes and Kathryn Lock of The Rosy Club.

Kathryn and Bethany are the founding members of The Rosy Club. It is a skin-positive and rosacea-awareness Instagram page that aims to inspire everyone and anyone to love the skin they’re in.

Join us in this week's amazing episode as it's the perfect opportunity to build on the momentum and encourage even more people with rosacea to find their voice and share their experiences.

28 Sep 2020Functional Medicine Practitioners Guide to Skin Conditions with Rebecca Hughes of Melbourne Functional Medicine01:01:33

Functional medicine takes a different perspective on skin diseases by not viewing it as a “disease” in and of itself. Rather, many skin conditions are considered an external symptom of an internal problem - and solved at the root cause.

Do you find it hard to live in the skin that is manifested with rashes, itchiness, redness, bleb or infection? Living with chronic skin conditions can be hard affecting people's social, professional, and personal life. Skin is the largest and most visible part of our body and skin conditions like a rash, irritation, skin infection, weird-looking bumps, blemishes, and inflammation can drive anyone crazy, in the most unpleasant ways. There are many conventional treatments available in the market in the form of topical cream, tablets tonics, lotions, ointments, antibiotics, and antifungal agents, offering only temporary relief from the condition, and posing greater side effects. That’s why most of the people look for integrative therapies like functional medicine that can treat chronic skin conditions from the inside out.

How does functional medicine view skin conditions?

That's what we will find out in this week's episode with Rebecca Hughes of Melbourne Functional Medicine.

Rebecca is a leading skin health practitioner at Melbourne Functional Medicine. As a functional medicine trained naturopath, she has a passion for treating skin conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, lupus, cold sores, impetigo, molluscum and warts. As recognition of her outstanding contribution to her field, Rebecca recently won the 2020 BIMA award for Clinical Excellence.

Since graduating in 2003, Rebecca has combined clinical practice with pursuits in a range of roles within the natural medicine field such as lecturing in bachelor degree nutrition and naturopathy courses, regulating complementary medicines at the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), and contributing to national reference text on Herbs and Natural Supplements.

Join us in this episode as we learn about the myths and misconception of treating skin conditions.

28 Oct 2019Areola Tattooing Following Breast Cancer with Aleisha Gannon00:33:36

The areola is part of the human breast and plays a key role in the aesthetic look of a breast. Since a woman’s self-image can depend on the appearance of her breasts, a missing areola can be psychologically devastating. A woman can survive breast cancer after undergoing a mastectomy, and she can regain her figure with breast reconstruction. However, she may not feel “complete” without an areola. A woman can become emotionally distressed from a scarred areola as well. Patients feel the breast cancer tattooing process helps them during the last part of their recovery to look complete and feel “whole” and “normal” again.

In this podcast episode, we will be speaking with Aleisha Gannon of Pink Lotus Breast Restoration.

Aleisha has been an artistic tattoo artist for 19 years. The last several years she has been offering realistic nipple/areola tattooing for women and men post-mastectomy following breast cancer and post top surgery. Aleisha has also launched Australia's first 3D temporary nipple tattoos to help women on their breast cancer journey to feel whole again. Post-surgery, the skin may be too weak after treatment for tattooing or nipple reconstruction, so this is an affordable, pain-free & non-invasive way to replace what has been taken. Aleisha will share how her journey into tattooing inspired the creation of temporary nipple tattoos. 31 Aug 2020Skincare 101 with Ross Macdougald, Founder of Biologi00:40:26

Whether you read it on the internet, heard it from a friend, or had it passed down from generation to generation, chances are you are clinging to at least one bad piece of skincare advice.

Because the beauty industry relies so heavily on word of mouth and recommendations (that is, a product largely succeeds if people review it positively, either IRL or online), skincare myths and false information can spread more easily than they might be able to in other industries.

Knowing the difference between myth and fact can lead to better decisions when taking care of your skin.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Ross Macdougald, Cosmetic Chemist and founder of Biologi.

Ross is calling for a change in the skincare and cosmetics industry, dedicating his time to educating consumers on the misleading and unsubstantiated claims that the industry is rife with. He wants brands to be more ethical and transparent so consumers can be fully aware of the ingredients used in products and know what they’re buying. As an experienced cosmetic chemist, Ross is dedicated to providing highly effective skincare products made out of purely natural ingredients. He is on a mission to prove through science that ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ can not only work but are better than synthetic man-made chemicals.

Wanting to change the game, Ross launched Biologi in 2017, the world’s first-ever 100% active single ingredient, organic, pure plant serum. Today Ross continues to explore the development of groundbreaking technology and game-changing ingredients, ensuring that people around the world have access to natural, superior and effective skincare.

08 Jun 2020Happiness, Well-being and Motivation: A Special Series00:31:28

What is happiness?

It seems like an odd question, but is it? Do you know how to define happiness? Do you think happiness is the same thing to you as it is to others?

What’s the point of it all? Does it even make a difference in our lives?

Most of us probably don’t believe we need a formal definition of happiness; we know it when we feel it, and we often use the term to describe a range of positive emotions, including joy, pride, contentment, and gratitude.

But what really is happiness? Is it feeling good all the time? Being rich or affording everything you want?

In this week's special podcast episode, Marni spoke with 4 experts about happiness and mental health.

Joanne Wilson, Byron Dempsey, Anna Block and Benny Wallington will be talking about happiness from their point of view and expertise.

Listen with us in an episode full of knowledge and learning towards the true meaning of happiness.

NOTE: Please note that in the first segment with Joanne Wilson "cortical" should be replaced with "cortisol" (the stress hormone that restricts blood flow).

Pediatric lymphoedema occurs when a child has a chronic accumulation of fluid that causes a region of their body to swell. Pediatric or primary lymphoedema is rare; the incidence is about 1 in 100,000 children. About 90 per cent of children with lymphoedema have secondary lymphedema, which is much more common.

To open Heal thy Skin podcast's third season, Marni will be speaking with Brittany Williams. Founder of Brylan’s Feat Foundation.

Brittany is a mother of four, wife, and the woman behind Brylan's Feat Foundation. Her relationship with lymphoedema began when her daughter, Brylan, was diagnosed with primary lymphoedema in 2014. She recently joined the Lymphedema Advocacy Group in Washington, D.C. to share her story and support the Lymphoedema Treatment Act. In the presence of this overgrowth of bacterial the small intestine no longer can function properly to digest and absorb food which leads to multiple nutrient deficiencies (and subsequent systemic symptoms and conditions) as well as the common IBS symptoms of bloating, pain, gas, cramping, diarrhea or constipation.

Studies show the prevalence of SIBO in rosacea patient populations ranges from 46% to 66%, and in at least two studies treatment of SIBO was shown to improve rosacea.

To shed more light on how SIBO and Rosacea are linked, Marni will be speaking with Kirsty Taylor of The Nourishing Way.

Kirsty is a Clinical Nutritionist, Wellness Enthusiast and Founder of The Nourishing Way.  She has a degree in Bachelor Health Science majoring in Nutritional and Dietetic Medicine at Endeavour College of Natural Health and a qualified Health and Nutrition Coach through Cadence Health. She has a passion for combining science with connection to yourself and your surroundings, giving you the confidence to make decisions over your health.

Listen with us as Kirsty shares the common misconception and treatments of SIBO and how it's related to our overall skin health.

02 Nov 2020Beyond the Scars with Isabella Fernandes, Model and Burn Injury Survivor00:38:30

When people see something different, unusual, or curious, they look.  Or even stare. And it is a reality of life that when we look different—colourful tattoos, unique dress, or burn scars—people may stare at us, too.

More than 200,000 people go to the emergency department every year with burn injuries in Australia. Accidental burns can happen to anyone, although children, teenagers and older people are most at risk. The trauma experienced by different individuals varies greatly, as do perceived problems during care, rehabilitation, and throughout the remainder of life.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Isabella Fernandes, a model and self-love activist.

Isabella acquired her scars in a house fire when her shirt caught fire while she was cooking causing severe burns along her armpit, breast and arm. One of the best-known projects of Isabella was being a muse in Sophie Mayanne's "Behind the Scars" photography campaign. The campaign aims to celebrate scars of all shapes and sizes, and the incredible stories behind them. While juggling work and her studies, Isabella hopes to normalise disabilities and visible differences through modelling.

Join us as Isabella shares her story and journey of healing, acceptance and living life beyond her scars.

12 Oct 2020Skin Bleaching with Dr Tess Mauricio00:40:29

The idea of altering skin tone has been around since ancient times. Arguably, it was during the height of colonialism and the rise of “scientific racism” (the pseudoscientific idea that empirical evidence supports notions of racial superiority and inferiority) from the 18th to the 19th century that white skin became even more desired.

Today, over a century after the zenith of scientific racism, the aesthetic standard of “lighter is better” has persisted, particularly in the “global south.” In some ways, challenging the practice of skin-lightening on the basis of skin damage is a lost cause as users will so often believe that the aimed-for benefits will outweigh the dangers.

Skin whitening has been marketed as part of a fight against ageing, which means it has also come to be seen as a legitimate way to take care of one’s skin. Women (and men) are told over and over that getting and keeping glowing skin at all ages is a standard requirement for beauty.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni spoke with Dr Tess Mauricio about skin whitening and skin bleaching.

Dr Tess Mauricio is a Board Certified Dermatologist and fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. She is the founder of M Beauty by Dr Tess and the youngest woman to hold the position of President of The San Diego Society for Dermatologic Surgery. Dr Tess is an internationally recognised cosmetic surgeon, author, renowned speaker, teacher, and a sought-after media personality. She is a favourite medical expert on TV with regular network appearances on CBS’ The Doctors, The Talk, The Real, Dr Phil, The Rachael Ray Show, Fox News, and The Dr Oz Show.

13 Aug 2019The Effects of Inflammation on the Skin with Jennifer Byrne00:43:19

Most people always think of inflammation as something that we can always see. Thus, we often intervene it with medications and not allow our body to work its unique healing capacity.

Do you know that inflammation can also be caused by psychological stress? Do you know that our lymphatic system plays a big role in resolving inflammation?

In this podcast episode, we will be speaking with Jennifer Byrne of Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians to uncover the biggest misconception about inflammation.

Jennifer is a full time lecturer in the Bachelor of Dermal Science for the College of Health & Biomedicine at Victoria University (Melbourne) as well as currently the chair of the Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians.

Jennifer’s teaching and research interest areas focus on the clinical and an interdisciplinary approach to dermal practice. Expertise and specialisation include clinical governance, standardising practice, Skin integrity and health, wound/scar and edema management.

Jennifer's qualifications include: BHSC (Clinical Dermal Therapy). BA (Architecture), Grad Dip (Wound Care), Grad Cert (Tertiary Education). Lecturer Dermal Science and Therapy (College of Health and Biomedicine) Victoria University and President of the Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians.

14 Sep 2020Fat Grafting; What is it and Who is it For? With Dr. Simone Matousek01:02:04

Are you considering plastic surgery but not sure where to start? Want a new look but can’t decide which procedure is best for you?

When you think of plastic surgery do synthetic implants and injectables come to mind? Have you heard of fat grafting? With advances constantly being made in surgical and minimally invasive techniques and technology, many procedures are becoming much more accessible — not to mention safer and with significantly shorter recovery times.

Plastic surgery is widespread and common, but that still doesn’t mean choosing to undergo a procedure is as simple as showing up in your surgeon’s office on the day of the surgery. There are many dos and don’ts to consider throughout the entire process, and it’s important to do your homework beforehand.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with one of Australia's leading plastic surgeon, Dr Simone Matousek.

Dr Simone Matousek is a fully qualified Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Surgeon. She is one of a few plastic surgeons with a PhD degree and was one of the first plastic surgeons in Australia to perform the technique of large volume fat grafting to the breast for reconstruction and cosmetic breast augmentation. She travelled internationally to gain experience prior to this procedure is performed in Australia and has since developed her own effective fat grafting technique.

Her practice philosophy is to leave patients looking refreshed and rejuvenated, not radically different. The aim of plastic surgery treatments is to provide subtle enhancement of a person’s features or to restore anatomy that has changed due to the processes of ageing or disease.

For more than 3 million children and adolescents living with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (AD)—the most common and serious type of eczema—the worst words in the English language are “don’t scratch.” Friends and parents may utter these words with the best of intentions, but when you are under the lash of relentless itch, the last thing they want to hear is to stop doing the very thing that provides momentary relief. Eczema comes and goes over time. It results in very dry and sensitive skin and can be made worse by exposure to many different things. But eczema isn’t just skin deep; it can affect overall health in a variety of ways. In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Cheryl Talent, President of Eczema Association of Australasia Inc (EAA). Having herself been an eczema sufferer since she was just a few days old, Cheryl became involved with the EAA in 1997 as a volunteer when she was in her mid-30s after having the worst eczema flare-up she had experienced in over 15 years. 03 Aug 2020Hormonally Shifting the Skin and Menopause with Dr Keira Barr of Resilient Health Institute00:32:04

Hormones can have a profound effect on the skin. Hormonal changes in adolescence can trigger the development of acne. In girls, Acne may fluctuate with hormonal levels over the course of the month. Some women find that taking birth control pills, which regulate hormones, can help control acne. Later on in life, during perimenopause (a time in which women start producing much less estrogen) until her periods stop entirely (menopause), the skin is also prone to changes.

Your hormones don’t just control how you feel — they can impact the health of your skin, too. With a quick Google search, you’ll find many articles promising that a "hormone reset" (via things like diet changes or supplements) will improve your skin health. But most often their claims are largely unfounded.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Keira Barr.

Dr Keira Barr believes that going through menopause shouldn’t mean you have to push pause on feeling comfortable, and confident in your skin. As a dual-board certified dermatologist, global speaker and best- selling author, she founded the Resilient Health Institute and created “The Skinny Dipping Method” to help midlife women strip away the fatigue, stress and shame surrounding menopause and uncover the secrets to making midlife the best time of their life.

As a former Assistant Clinical Professor at UC Davis in the departments of dermatology and pathology, advisor to numerous start-ups, author and editorial reviewer of multiple leading medical journals, Dr Barr passionately bridges the gap between the latest evidence-based research and an integrative approach to health. She turns conventional methodologies on their heads, blending science with the soul to bring an innovative and compassionate approach to women’s health and skincare.

Her book, “The Skin Whisperer,” blends her medical expertise with cognitive science and her own health journey, creating a framework to support readers on a journey towards self-discovery, self-love and creating resilient health. Dr Barr’s expertise has been featured on national tv, radio, podcasts as well as popular outlets including MindBodyGreen, Insider, Reader’s Digest, Glamour, SELF, and Oprah magazine.

07 Sep 2020Sepsis Awareness Month with Caitlin Alsop00:29:52

If you were told that there is a silent killer in Australia that takes the lives of up to half the people who get it each year—more than 5000 people—would you know what it is? If you were told that it can strike anyone of any age and kills more people than prostate cancer, breast cancer and AIDS combined, would that narrow it down?

According to experts, if you have no idea what the condition is, you’re not the only one. Most people have never heard of sepsis, have no idea what it is, and don’t know what they can do about it. Some people think that you can only get sepsis from being in the hospital, but the majority of people who get sepsis develop the initial infection outside of the hospital. In fact, sepsis can develop from any infection, even a cut or a skin infection.

In this week's podcast episode, to commemorate Sepsis Awareness Month, Marni will be speaking with Caitlin Alsop. Caitlin is a sepsis survivor. 2 years ago, a skin rash was the only symptom she had, to a tooth infection she wasn't aware of, which nearly took her life, causing Ludwig's Angina and severe sepsis. She was in a coma for 9 days.

She was thankful to survive and determined to make a difference in the world, give back to the hospital and spread awareness for sepsis. It was in that hospital bed that she had the realisation that she had been given a second chance at life.

Caitlin wears her scars from that near-death experience proudly, so that others feel okay about theirs too.

Dry skin is a common health condition. It occurs when the skin lacks the oils and moisture it requires to stay healthy. Dry skin can be uncomfortable, itchy, red, and scaly. 29 Apr 2019Why Common Laser Treatments could Delay the Diagnosis of Skin Cancer with Fiona Moss00:32:52

How many of you have had laser? Laser or IPL hair removal, laser pigmentation removal, laser for reducing redness. There are so many aesthetic treatments that use lasers to smooth out, refine or reduce the appearance of imperfections on the skin. When you had your initial consultation, was it mandatory for you to have a skin check or mole map? Lasers work by targeting different chromophores in the skin, such a pigment in hair or a freckle or blood like in a dilated capillaries…. What also contains these chromophores? Benign and both malignant lesions, therefore these treatments may also target and destroy the clues to malignancy in a mole, or a lump, or a bump on the skin. Welcome to episode number 7 of the Heal Thy Skin Podcast, I’m Marni, your host and today I am speaking with Fiona Moss, Dermal Clinician, Dermatoscopist and University Supervisor.  Fiona shares how her journey into dermoscopy altered the way she viewed laser treatments and the importance of having your skin checked by a skin cancer specialist prior to undergoing aesthetic treatments.  . . .

10 Aug 202328 years, 4 Children and Stage 3 Melanoma with Amanda Keck00:32:11

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer and grows very quickly if left untreated.

In this podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with a Melanoma Survivor, Amanda Keck.

Amanda began going through the hurdles and treatment of stage 3 melanoma, just one month after the arrival of her fourth son.

She faced another hurdle just 6 months after her diagnosis with the medical team deciding to stop her treatment, as unfortunately, her body is not responding the way they would have liked. With a lively home of 4 boys ages 8, 5, 3 and 9 months, Amanda continuously showed her family and loved ones just how much she can face each day, with hospital visits, treatments, tests, the emotional turmoil of her diagnosis, and becoming ill from the treatment itself putting her in emergency multiple times. As a result, she’s sadly had to spend precious time away from her husband and growing boys.

Time won't stand still for families affected by melanoma - Neither will we. Join us as we speak with Amanda about her Melanoma Story.

Skincare professionals and consumers alike are bombarded daily with tons of information about skincare, skin science and skin health from the media, manufacturers and an ever-increasing number of skin practitioners, all attempting to justify that what they profess and advocate is the truth and nothing but the truth.

25 May 2020Vitiligo: Uniquely Beautifully with Lauren Jimmieson of The Jimmie Journal00:38:47

Growing up can be hard enough, but for those with vitiligo, the normal teenage worries about appearance are increased significantly. Vitiligo is considered to be an autoimmune disorder, where the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues, causing the skin (and sometimes the hair) to lose its pigmentation. It can appear at any age, but studies suggest that it is more likely to start around early age. In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Lauren Jimmieson of The Jimmie Journal. At just 14 years old, Lauren was diagnosed with Vitiligo. As a teenager with her skin losing its natural colour in a visible area of her body, Lauren felt she had unwillingly walked into a mousetrap of bullies. But Lauren never let her vitiligo define her. It did not stop her from chasing her dreams, in an industry where one’s ‘look’ often contributes significantly to the likelihood of success. Right now, Lauren works as an actor, dancer, singer and musical theatre performer. Listen with us in an amazing episode full of positivity, courage and inspiration on living life uniquely and beautifully. 29 Jun 2020An Acne Journey with Emily Bolen00:24:57

For many people who have acne, it affects more than their appearance.  Acne can have profound social and psychological effects. These are not necessarily related to its clinical severity. Even mild acne can be significantly disabling. Acne can affect people of all ages but it predominantly occurs during the teenage years. Approximately 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 25 develop acne.

The psychological and social impacts of acne are a huge concern, especially because acne affects adolescents at a crucial period when they are developing their personalities. During this time, peer acceptance is very important to the teenager and unfortunately, there are strong links between physical appearance and attractiveness and peer status.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Emily Bolen.

Emily developed acne at a young age and has been living with it for years until she found a medication that improved her skin.

Listen to Emily's story and know how acne impacts someone's life more than skin deep.

17 Jun 2021Our Skin and Anything in Between with Miriam Thom, Founder of Club Psora00:52:27

You may suspect you have dry, oily, or sensitive skin, but do you really know your skin?

Your skin is the window to your body that reveals the stories of your life. From acne breakouts during your teenage years to the radiant glow of pregnancy and the sunspots of ageing, both your age and your health are reflected in your skin. Skin is the body’s largest organ. When healthy, its layers work hard to protect us. But when it’s compromised, the skin’s ability to work as an effective barrier is impaired.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Miriam Thom, founder of Club Psora.

Miriam was living in New York and working as a filmmaker when she experienced her first severe psoriasis outbreak, just shy of her 30th birthday. Her year-long journey into self-healing ultimately led to remission and a career refocus in wellness. In 2019 she received her 200-hour teacher training through NYC’s Sky Ting Yoga, her teaching style informed by traditional vinyasa, TCM, meditation, embodiment and stress-management techniques.

She founded Club Psora for the skin-sensitive community -- to provide for others what had been missing for her: a safe container offering access to specialists, resources, personal stories and community discourse. She is led by her fascination with pathologies and the narratives that affect them. She seeks to uncover how a deeper understanding of self can lead to a healthier existence.

16 Nov 2020Skin Cancer Action Week with Dr Adam Sheridan of Australasian College of Dermatologists00:31:39

Summer’s just around the corner! But along with those warm sunny days also comes a serious threat: ultraviolet (UV) radiation. We all know that spending a bit too much time under the sun can cause sunburn. UV damage doesn’t just stop at the skin; it can also harm your eyes. Many Australians will remember the ‘Sid the Seagull’ campaign from the 1980s which launched the ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ message. Some things have changed since then but our sun is still the same.

In commemoration of Skin Cancer Action Week, Marni will be speaking with Dr Adam Sheridan of the Australasian College of Dermatologists and Cancer Council Australia. Dr Sheridan sits on the Australasian College of Dermatologists (ACD) committees for Mohs Micrographic Surgery and GP Training and runs the Joint National ACD and RCPA Mohs QAP. He is actively involved in the ACD specialist training and certification program. Dr Adam Sheridan undertook Specialist Dermatology training in Australia and the United Kingdom; including Clinical Research Fellowships in Dermatology and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Oxford, England. He specialises in the delivery of comprehensive skin cancer management, Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Medical Laser. Dr Sheridan also served as a visiting Consultant and Senior Dermatological Surgeon at The Skin and Cancer Foundation. He is a published author and guest reviewer for the Australasian Journal of Dermatology.

With two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70, skin cancer action week is an important reminder to use sun protection and of the importance of early skin cancer detection for all Australians as we make our way into summer.

Join us as Dr Adam shares the importance of skin cancer prevention, early detection, and the biggest misconception about skin cancer.

29 Apr 2019Know your ABC’s of UV with Sam Sheehan of Suncayr Australia00:35:13

Studies have shown that consumers are not using enough sunscreen, with an avg of people using only 25% of the sunscreen that they should be. We need two teaspoons worth of sunscreen for your head, shoulders, and neck, and two tablespoons worth for the rest of your body.

Welcome to episode number 8 of the Heal Thy Skin Podcast, I’m Marni your host and today I am speaking with Sam Sheehan, Managing Director of Suncayr Australia and Asia.

The mission of Suncayr  is to give you the UV awareness that you need to safely enjoy every day you spend outside.

Sunscreen is not a complete solution. Since sunscreen is invisible when it's both working and not working, how do you know that your sunscreen is still doing its job?

To solve this problem, Suncayr developed SPOT, a smart UV-indicating sticker to take the guesswork out of applying and reapplying sunscreen

Sam shares how his journey into SunSmart awareness bought advanced technology and research to an everyday routine and the importance of knowing you’re protected in the sun.

05 Oct 2020Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Dr Eva Nagy00:45:23

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins this week, we’ll start seeing pink awareness efforts everywhere. Pink products will line the shelves at stores, awareness and fundraising ads will showcase celebrities wearing pink ribbons, some even articulating a specific person or family member affected by breast cancer for whom they’re dedicating their efforts. Raising awareness is a great thing.  Breast cancer is a public health concern that’s a year-round issue, but it’s good to draw more attention to the issue from time to time. Awareness of disease begins with education. Breast cancer is no different. It’s important to understand what it is so you know what to do if you are or your loved one is diagnosed. While most people are aware that breast cancer exists, there’s still much that can be done to educate people about it.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Eva Nagy.

Dr Eva Nagy is the Consultant Breast Surgeon at Sydney Oncoplastic Surgery. Upon completing her training and becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Eva embarked on sub-specialty training in Breast Surgery. These stints saw her receive comprehensive instruction in advanced surgical techniques relevant to breast cancer at the Poche Centre in North Sydney, and at the Nottingham Breast Institute, a class-leading breast cancer treatment centre in the United Kingdom.

While Eva offers the full suite of surgical options for breast cancer patients, her professional interests include the use of breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) for patients where mastectomies are not a necessity and the use of plastic techniques to help restore appearances after cancer surgery.

She is continually mindful of patients' emotional well-being and quality of life when discussing treatment plans, and always ensures that patient health is never compromised. Additionally, through working alongside field-leading oncoplastic specialists during her fellowship training, Eva gained significant expertise in reconstructive techniques for patients with complex situations or who require corrective surgical treatment for prior breast surgery.

Her ongoing research in breast cancer has provided her with opportunities to present her findings in conferences such as the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, and the Association of Breast Surgery Conference in Glasgow.

Her current research explores the feasibility of safely de-escalating treatment protocols for cancer patients.

Join us as Dr Eva shares the biggest misconception, treatments and innovation for breast cancer.

22 Jun 2020Exploring How Mindfulness Practices Support Healing with Peter Radcliffe00:50:29

Nowadays, mindfulness and meditation are often used to mean the same thing, which can be confusing, not many are clear on what ‘mindfulness meditation’ is and how it differs from each other.

Mindfulness and meditation are mirror-like reflections of each other: mindfulness supports and enriches meditation, while meditation nurtures and expands mindfulness. Where mindfulness can be applied to any situation throughout the day, meditation is usually practised for a specific amount of time.

There are many types of meditation. They can be further categorised into insight or calming and guided or unguided. In the world of meditation, there is an approach for everyone.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Peter Radcliffe of Skillful MIND. We know that increased stress can impair healing, while managing stress and lowering cortisol has been found to decrease healing time after major surgery. We discuss the implications of stress healing and provide clarity of the types of practices you can do at home to support your body's immune and healing response.

Peter Radcliffe is a life coach, meditation teacher and NLP trainer. He is a highly experienced and well-regarded meditation teacher and NLP trainer. Peter teaches students through the lens of a calm mind to help bring peace, happiness and joy to their lives. His unique background living with Buddhist monks empowers his retreats to be so much more than an ordinary getaway, it becomes a journey in itself.

Skillful MIND’s vision is to offer people space and support to cultivate their own inner peace and re-connection with self. Finding a balance between the pleasant and the necessary might be tougher than expected; however, it is not impossible.  Join us in another incredible episode full of learning towards finding your inner peace. 22 Feb 2021Toxic Positivity; What is it? With Kayla Juettner, Chronic Illness and Disability Advocate00:30:25

Good vibes only and positivity is a concept where people believe in keeping only the positive and rejecting any negative thoughts and notions. This approach also believes that you’re in control of your body and what happens to you and that you can simply remove yourself from negative situations. You’re to blame if you stay in the negative situation or thoughts, and you’re to blame for bringing up negativity. It is the stigma that bad feelings are well, bad! Having unrealistic hopes is self-destructive, as you are putting mental and emotional energy into making it happen, and are likely to be disappointed when you fail to reach your goal. Can you already see where this is going to fail? In this week's podcast episode, Marni travelled virtually to New York to speak with Kayla Juettner. Chronic illness and disability advocate, and the woman behind the Instagram account @chronically.kayla. Being born sick made Kayla create unique challenges and outlook on the world. Dealing with appointments, and hospitals rooms, and disability can be lonely; thus, @chronically.kayla was born. She wanted to create a space to foster conversations and community around living with chronic illness and disability. Inspiration Porn peak ableism that can’t help but damage people living with skin conditions and disabilities. Many people perpetuate toxic positivity without realising what they are doing, many times as a form of ableism. Join us in this episode as Kayla talks about toxic positivity, ableism and realistic optimism. Learn more about Kayla Juettner here: Instagram and Tiktok:  @chronically.kayla Twitter: @chronic_kayla

13 Apr 2020Pressure Injuries with Lisa Cox00:42:28

A pressure injury is defined as “localised damage to the skin and/or underlying soft tissue usually over a bony prominence or related to medical or other devices. Pressure wounds are caused by pressure against the skin that limits blood flow to the skin. Limited movement can make skin vulnerable to damage and may lead to the development of pressure injury.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Lisa Cox to debunk the myths and misconceptions about pressure injury.

Lisa acquired multiple pressure injuries in her early twenties following a brain haemorrhage and over 1 year of hospitalisation the first time.  Her injuries have been significant but it was a pressure injury that appeared like a small pimple that led to significant discomfort.

Today, Lisa speaks at staff education events and medical conferences about the long-term effects of pressure injuries and has helped produce prevention/care information for patients and their families.

Listen with us in an in-depth talk about the cause, prevention and treatment of pressure injuries.

21 Sep 2020Naturopathy and the Skin with Emily Bathgate of The Purist Collection00:43:49

Wouldn’t it be great if we could design a single piece of clothing that was protective, comfortable, stretchable as well as stain-resistant, water-resistant and fade-resistant? One that never needs ironing and could self-repair from any rips, cuts or burns? Well, technically, you already have such a “suit” and it will last you your entire life if you care for it well, and that is your skin.

We’re used to hearing about our skin in connection with beauty, rather than health. The Skin, however, is a remarkably complex organ (it is the largest organ of the body), which reflects our total health. Treatment for common skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema and rosacea, therefore, often include a closer look at what’s going inside the body.

What is naturopathy and why is it poised for growth in the decade to come?

By definition, Naturopathy—also called naturopathic medicine—is a medical system that has evolved from a combination of traditional practices and health care approaches. People visit naturopathic practitioners for various health-related purposes, including primary care, overall well-being, and treatment of illnesses.

But how does it affect your skin health? That's what we're going to find out in this week's episode with Emily Bathgate.

Emily is a qualified naturopath, self-confidence ambassador and former acne sufferer, specialising in natural health solutions and clean beauty alternatives. After her mum fell ill with cancer that was found to be genetic, Emily started to realise that she needed to make some drastic changes so that she could reclaim control of her health, her future and her vitality, and become the radiant woman she was destined to be… all whilst inspiring other women to do the same!

Almost a decade later, Emily works with clients in the areas of skin health, digestive disharmony, hormonal imbalances, anxiety and low self-esteem. Ultimately, Emily’s mission is to empower women suffering from acne and hormonal issues to get to the root cause of their skin issues, enabling and inspiring them to make healthier lifestyle choices, so that they too can heal their bodies and skin naturally, and become the most confident, happy, healthy and radiant versions of themselves.

22 Mar 2021Normal Adjustments with Lymphoedema with Nicole Faccio, Lymphoedema Patient and Advocate01:00:06

The lymphatic system consists of many tiny channels throughout the body called lymph vessels or lymphatics. Like blood vessels, these join together to form larger channels. The lymphatic system carries lymph, a colourless, watery fluid that contains lymphocytes – a type of white blood cell.

Lymphoedema is the swelling of part or parts of the body that occurs when the lymphatic system is not working properly.

Swelling associated with lymphedema can occur anywhere in the body, including the arms, legs, genitals, face, neck, chest wall, and oral cavity.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni travels virtually to London to speak with Nicole Faccio, podcast host and a lymphoedema patient and advocate.

Nicole was born with Primary Lymphoedema and unlike many people, is visible at birth mostly in her left arm. Her Lymphoedema is known as Milroy's Disease and it is categorised by significant congenital malformations of the lymphatic system. Nicole has lymphoedema swelling in most of her body, including both legs, left arm, abdomen, parts of her back, face and internal lymphatic masses as well. For the most part, she lived a normal life - went to a regular school, graduated with an Engineering degree and moved to New York City to pursue a career in Tech, and most recently moved to London in pursuit of her dream job. Nicole has adjusted her life around the needs of lymphoedema and decided that the only way she would be able to have a long functional life was not to fight against it but with it.

Don't miss this incredible episode as Nicole shares her story with lymphoedema and living her life normally- with adjustments.

There are numerous nutraceutical supplements on the market, but whom are they for? When are they beneficial, ineffective or even harmful? 25 Nov 2019Raising Awareness for Lipoedema with Dr Naveen Somia of Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons00:48:23

Lymphoedema and lipoedema are two distinct medical disorders even though both involve swelling in the arms and legs. Lymphoedema is a disorder of the lymphatic system and is commonly caused by a dysfunction in the flow of lymph fluid through the arms or legs. Lipoedema, in contrast, does not involve the lymphatic system, but it is a pathologic, symmetric deposition of fat that most often affects the lower extremities and almost exclusively occurs in women.

According to statistics, almost 11% of women are affected by Lipoedema, however, it is oftentimes mistaken for obesity. There is no simple blood test or scan to diagnose Lipoedema, so the diagnosis is made by history and physical examination.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Naveen Somia, President of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, and the founder of Naveen Somia Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery.

Dr Somia has been successfully managing lipoedema patients since 2013. Dr Naveen Somia is one of the leading plastic surgeons in Australia. He's based in Sydney and is currently a Senior Plastic Surgeon in 5 major hospitals. He specialises in Cosmetic Surgery of the Eyes, Face, Breast and Body. He is also a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney and enjoys teaching medical students and mentoring future Plastic Surgeons.

Dr Naveen Somia trained in Melbourne and Sydney where he completed his Advanced Plastic Surgery Training followed by Advanced Fellowships in Cosmetic and Eyelid Surgery in Atlanta, USA.

23 Nov 2020Inflammation and the Skin with Stefanie Milla, CEO and Founder of Dermalist Skincare00:45:57

Like any other part of your body, your skin can be involved in immune responses. Most of us have experienced skin inflammation at some point in our lives. But did you know that it is a way for your skin to tell that your immune system is responding to a certain dysfunction, allergic reaction, or infection?

Inflammatory skin conditions are the most common problem in dermatology thus many different treatments are available for the treatment of skin inflammation. The type of treatment will depend on the cause of your inflammation.

Another common inflammation culprit is product overuse, especially in those exploring all areas of skincare and a drawer full of samples. Inflammation can come from over-exfoliating, over-sampling, or irritants or allergens in formulas.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Stefanie Milla, founder of Dermalist Skincare, an Australian company at the cutting edge of the cosmeceutical industry.

Stef has worked in the skincare industry for more than nineteen years as both a trainer and an educator in the industry. After many years of planning and perfecting the range, she launched Dermalist in the Australian market in October 2019 which has since revolutionised the skincare routines of thousands of Australian women with their range of luxurious, powerful and ethical ‘skip-care’.

The feet support the entire body; therefore, foot health has a large impact on one’s overall health. The foot and ankle have 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Consequently, there are a lot of areas in the feet and ankles where something can go wrong.  Podiatrists, albeit being specialists, are often the first practitioners to diagnose major systemic issues of the body.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Joseph Frenkel, Podiatrist and Wound Care Consultant.

Joseph is a highly qualified health professional having completed both a Bachelor of Podiatry and a Master of Science with a specialty in Wound Healing and Tissue Repair. 26 Oct 2020Alopecia Areata with Gary Sherwood of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF)00:51:38

The term alopecia means hair loss.  Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that often results in unpredictable hair loss. In the majority of cases, hair falls out in small patches around the size of a quarter. For most people, the hair loss is nothing more than a few patches, though in some cases it can be more extreme.

Alopecia areata affects people of all ages, although it most commonly appears in adolescence or early adulthood. Hair loss occurs over a period of weeks. The hair usually grows back after several months, although it may fall out again. In some cases, unpredictable cycles of hair loss followed by regrowth can last for years.

Due to the fact that much of the public is still not familiar with alopecia areata, it can have a profound impact on one’s life and functional status, both at work and at school.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Gary Sherwood of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF).

Gary has been NAAF's Communications Director since 2012. The National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF), founded in 1981, provides support to patients afflicted with alopecia areata, builds public awareness regarding the disease and funds research to find its causes, treatment protocols and cure. The organisation has over 60,000 members. Its mission is to support research to find a cure or acceptable treatment for alopecia areata, to support those with the disease, and to educate the public about alopecia areata.

" All children should be able to grow up with heroes and heroines who look and feel like them – whether we’re talking about race, religion, disability, body type, or medical conditions like Alopecia Areata. " - Georgia Gardner, AAAF

Let's get some things straight right off the bat: Alopecia is not a sign of cancer or that someone is going through chemotherapy. Not everyone who has alopecia loses all their hair. And, of course, it's not something anyone needs to be ashamed of. Unfortunately, far too many people with alopecia have been subject to misinformation and harmful assumptions, leaving them feeling insecure. So let's get to the facts.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a genetic, immune-mediated hair loss condition characterised by patches of nonscarring hair loss that affects approximately 1.7% of the global population. Because hair loss and regrowth from alopecia areata are unpredictable and sometimes cyclical (comes back again and again), having the condition can be frustrating and emotionally challenging for many people.

Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation celebrates Alopecia Areata Awareness Week every November. To help commemorate this year's celebration, on this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Georgia Gardner, AAAF Secretary and is living with Alopecia Areata.

Since the age of four Georgia has been living with Alopecia Areata Universalis, which causes complete hair loss on your scalp and body. She has been a volunteer with AAAF since her teenage years. Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation Inc. (AAAF) was founded in 2010 with the purpose of improving the lives of people living with Alopecia Areata and their families. Through education, AAAF is striving to eradicate the inequality of those with Alopecia Areata within our schools, our work environments and our governments.

Join us in this amazing episode as Georgia walks us through her journey living with alopecia areata and raising awareness.

November 14-22 is Alopecia Areata Awareness Week, which seeks to build more awareness and understanding about the condition. For more information, visit http://www.aaaf.org.au/events/. Anyone affected by Alopecia can find support through Australia Alopecia Areata Foundation. For more information visit www.aaaf.org.au.

16 Dec 2019All About Scarring with Angela Thynne of Scar Care00:57:09

What many people don’t realize is the physiological impact that scars can have on their bodies — whether it's a minor scar from falling as a child, a high-school football injury, a burn, or a C-section scar. While not every scar presents a problem, many do. If your body doesn’t break down scar tissue completely, it will often spread — triggering your body to compensate. Any kink, pull or restriction in one area can impact the rest of the body. If your movements are restricted, your muscles will be forced to compensate by working harder. Nerve entrapment can affect circulation and cause pain and discomfort.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Angela Thynne, Director of Scar Care, to learn more about Scarring treatments, causes and management.

Angela is an occupational therapist with over 25 years of experience in the management of scarring and oedema following traumatic injuries, burns and surgery.  She has run her private practice, Scar Care, specialising in scarring and oedema for over 20 years, and has extensive experience in treating both adults and children with scarring and oedema.  Her experience has been within both the private and public sectors, including clinical practice, research, teaching and training.

She is a credentialed private practitioner to the Professor Stuart Pegg Adult Burns Centre at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.   Angela is a clinical lecturer in scar and oedema management at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Queensland and is the co-coordinator of the Burns Rehabilitation Course of the Australian and New Zealand Burn Association

She is passionate about the prevention and treatment of traumatic and surgical scarring.  She has committed her professional life and ongoing professional training to the minimisation and management of scarring.

06 Jul 2020The Gut Health and Psoriasis connection with Kirsty Taylor of The Nourishing Way00:43:49

You may have noticed that there's been a lot of talk about gut health lately – and how what's going on in your gut may affect your overall health and wellbeing, including the health of your skin. So what is the link between gut health and skin health? Is there a link between gut health and psoriasis? And most importantly, what does all this mean for you? The incredible complexity of the gut and its importance to our overall health is a topic of increasing research in the medical community. Numerous studies in the past two decades have demonstrated links between gut health and the immune system, mood, mental health, autoimmune diseases, endocrine disorders, skin conditions, and cancer. Probiotics feed the good bacteria in the gut. Healthful microorganisms support the functioning of the immune system, which can help control symptoms of chronic conditions, such as psoriasis. Since it’s thought that good health begins in your gut, could there be a connection? That's what we're going to find out on this week's episode with Kirsty Taylor of The Nourishing Way. Join us as Marni and Kirsty talk about how our gut health and skin are connected, how it is linked to psoriasis, common misconceptions and so much more! 29 Apr 2019Learning The ABCDE’s of Skin Cancer and How to Find A Skin Cancer Certified Practitioner with Jane Homberger of Skin Smart Australia00:37:47

The incidence of skin cancer in Australia is one of the highest in the world, two to three times the rates in Canada, the US and the UK.

In 2015, 2162 people died from skin cancer in Australia, 1520 from melanoma and 642 from non-melanoma skin cancers.

Melanoma kills more young Australians (20-39 year olds) than any other single cancer.

To put it into perspective in Australia in 2015, there were 1520 deaths due to melanoma and in the same year there were 1,209 deaths due on our roads.

There is more and more research into the cause and treatment of melanoma plus awareness initiatives such as #calltimeonmelanoma and today we will be diving into the depths of different types of skin cancer and what to look for on your skin.

Welcome to episode number 5 of the Heal Thy Skin Podcast, I’m Marni, your host and today I am speaking with Jane Homberger from Skin Smart Australia. Jane is a Registered Nurse, holds a Post Graduate Diploma in General Practice Nursing and Professional Diploma in Dermatoscopy and is the CEO of Skin Smart Australia, a company that provides mole mapping and corporate skin cancer checks across Australia.

Jane shares how her journey into skin cancer medicine, inspired the beginnings of Skin Smart Australia and the importance having your skin checked by a certified dermatoscopist.

The 3 deeper than skin insights that Jane shared that stood out to me were:

  1. Know your ABCDE!!

A stands for asymmetry - If you were to place a cross through your mole, are all four pieces identical?

B is for border – A healthy mole has a border that fades consistently into the periphery with no abrupt border.

C is for colour. A mole with two or more colours is more concerning than a mole with only one colour.

D is for diameter. A melanoma is commonly larger than 6mmin diameter. Please be aware though that most moles over 6mm will not be melanomas.

Finally E is for evolution. Something changing and evolving.

2. Melanoma can occur on anyone in moles that you’ve had all your life.

3. Book in for a mole map! Mole maps should be part of your annual health check up.

19 Oct 2020The Mind-Skin Connection with Dr Kierra Barr of Resilient Health Institute00:24:45

The mind and skin are intimately entangled. If you've ever blushed from embarrassment, you know that your skin can reflect what you're feeling inside. It makes sense, then, that emotional trouble might show up as skin trouble. Although cause and effect can be difficult to pin down, considerable data suggest that at least in some people, stress and other psychological factors can activate or worsen certain skin conditions. The bond between skin and mind has deep roots, going back at least as far as skin-to-skin contact between newborn and mother.

From topical outbreaks like cold sores to the ever-so-common condition of adult acne, your mind is likely a major culprit behind them. The skin is the most noticeable part of our body that could be impacted by psychological factors. Is this a new phenomenon? Or are we just beginning to understand the very real effects stress has on our minds and bodies?

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Kiera Barr.

Dr Barr is a prominent leader in women’s medicine – creating a bridge between hormones, skin and mind-body medicine to optimise women’s mid-life experience. She is an international speaker, best-selling author, clinical educator, and considered a leading authority on women’s health. Keira passionately bridges the gap between the latest evidence-based research and an integrative approach to health. She turns conventional methodologies on their heads, blending science with the soul to bring an innovative and compassionate approach to health and skincare.

15 Jun 2020How Hormones Affect Your Skin with Michaela Sparrow of The Longevity Remedy00:33:12

For all that your hormones do for you, they’re still shrouded in mystery — you can’t see them. Your hormones don’t just control how you feel, they can impact the health of your skin, too. Hormones play a key role in skin health. When you’re stressed your body produces more cortisol, a hormone. High levels of cortisol may cause inflammation and occasionally cause inflammatory skin conditions. Estrogen takes the prize for the most widely known and discussed hormone.  However, there are many misconceptions about this elusive and incredibly important substance. In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Michaela Sparrow of The Longevity Remedy. Michaela is a degree-qualified naturopath, clinical nutritionist and anti-ageing practitioner. She has a specialty interest in cosmetic & plastic surgery recovery from a holistic and nutrition perspective. Michaela has a wealth of knowledge on hormones, nutrition and how it affects health and overall wellness. She has been featured in WHO magazine, OK magazine, Dailymail, Sporteluxe, Beautycrew, news.com.au and many more. 19 Apr 2021Sex and Gender; Meanings, Definition, Identity, and Expression with Dr Riki Lane of Monash Health Gender Clinic00:44:53

When filling out official documents, you are often asked to provide your name, birth date, and sex or gender. But have you ever been asked to provide your sex and your gender?

Most people use sexuality to refer to the gender(s) to which they are attracted. However, sexuality means different things to different people. A person’s sex, as determined by his or her biology, does not always correspond with their gender; therefore, the terms “sex” and “gender” are not interchangeable.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Riki Lane, an amazing researcher with expertise in qualitative and quantitative methods in the areas of sociology of health, science and gender, sex and sexuality.

Dr Riki Lane is a Research Fellow at the Department of General Practice since 2011, undertaking qualitative and ethnographic research studies into models of primary health care. He is also a Project/Research Worker at the Monash Health Gender Clinic.

Their Gender Clinic work includes: researching ways to improve health care for trans and gender diverse (TGD) people; facilitating consumer and community participation; and developing and delivery of education in TGD affirmative health care practice.

17 Feb 2020Facial Ageing and Aesthetic Surgery with Dr Naveen Somia, President of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons00:48:25

A gracefully aging face is a beautiful thing, but, let's be honest, there are changes that occur with age that we would like to slow down. Age affects every part of the body. Changes in our faces are most at the forefront. Facial ageing occurs mainly as the result of skin changes and changes in the deeper soft tissues of the face. Factors that influence external skin changes include natural aging, skin type, sun exposure, facial movement, and routine skincare. In this podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Naveen Somia, President of the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Somia is a published author of several scientific papers in Plastic Surgery. He was awarded a PhD for his 3-year research into Eyelid Reanimation using implantable microelectrodes and the study of Eyelid Movements. He is also one of few Australian plastic surgeons that provide treatment and management strategies for patients with lipoedema. Dr Somia takes an active interest in the teaching, training and mentoring Australia’s future plastic surgeons, as well as keeping abreast of new advances in science and technology.

10 Feb 2020Debunking Skincare Myths with Lab Muffin Beauty Science00:33:16

The skin is the body's largest organ. When healthy, its layers work hard to protect us. But when it's compromised, the skin's ability to work as an effective barrier is impaired. We have then to improve skin health to support it and maintain its protective role.

There are TONS of products on the market that claim to be helpful to our skin's overall wellness. However, truth be told- not all do.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Michelle Wong of Lab Muffin Beauty Science.

Michelle is a science educator with a PhD in chemistry, based in Sydney, Australia. She started Lab Muffin Beauty Science a bit over nine years ago, frustrated that the beauty blogosphere didn’t have enough easy-to-understand explanations of the science behind beauty products.

" I firmly believe that anyone can understand the science behind skincare and beauty, and if you can’t, it’s not your fault – it’s the fault of the person doing the talking (and sometimes, they’re trying to bamboozle you into believing them!). " - Michelle Wong

Listen as Michelle debunks the myths and uncovers the biggest misconceptions about skincare.

02 Sep 2019Scar Tissue Release, A New Revolution In Scar Revision with Gail Tumes00:53:27

Surgical interventions around the world continue to rise. The resulting scars never go away. They are an ever-present reminder of the day of that surgery.

Scars also arise from accidents, wounds from wars and conflicts, personal attacks and many other traumas. Effective treatment of scar tissue is, for a big percentage of the population, left untreated and is probably the most neglected of bodywork skills for the manual therapist.

McLoughlin's scar tissue release has been described as a “giant leap forward" in the treatment of scar tissue.

In this podcast episode, we will be speaking with Gail Tumes, a highly qualified instructor and practitioner of McLoughlin Scar Tissue Release and founder at Sumet Bowen Health Clinic. Gail had an extensive career in the health/aged care industries, reinforced with a background in Bowen Therapy, HR, WH&S and Rehab.

26 Jul 2022Chapped Lips 101 with Dr Julia Rhodes00:31:21

Because lips don't have any oil glands, their skin is thinner and more delicate than the skin on the rest of the body. They run the danger of getting dry and chapped as a result. Lips are more exposed to the elements than the rest of the body and can develop chapped skin through exposure to the sun, dry air, or extreme cold.

Many of us encounter chapped lips in the winter, which are inflamed, dry, and peeling lips brought on by disruption of the outer skin layer.

Cheilitis, the medical term for chapped lips, can result from exposure to an allergen or a medical condition.

In this week's podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Julia Rhodes,  award-winning Melbourne-based dermatologist and the founder of Spotlight on Skin.

She is passionate about demystifying the confusing world of skincare by providing evidence-based, unbiased information so that you can make informed decisions when it comes to your skin.

26 Aug 2019Living with Psoriasis; Stephanie Shepherd00:32:37

For the first time on Heal Thy Skin Podcast, we will be listening to a person's first-hand experience in living with Psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a common skin condition that speeds up the life cycle of skin cells. It's a chronic disease that often comes and goes. It causes cells to build up rapidly on the surface of the skin. The extra skin cells form scales and red patches that are itchy and sometimes painful. Psoriasis is often misdiagnosed as a rash, ringworm or other skin irritation, such as eczema. However, psoriasis is the most common autoimmune disease in the US, affecting 7.5 million Americans.

In this podcast episode, we will be speaking with Stephanie Shepherd of Cyapsoriasis. Stephanie is living with psoriasis for 11 years now. She runs an Instagram and a YouTube channel which both raise psoriasis awareness, through sharing her story and other people too. She strongly believes in natural healing, through diet and lifestyle changes, because that’s when she had seen the best results for her skin.

29 Apr 2019Why Taking a Holistic Approach to Acne Leads to Better Outcomes with Carly Whytcross of CAP’s Clinic00:38:50

Almost everyone at some point in their life will experience acne. From teenage breakouts to persistent inflamed cystic acne in adulthood. I’m sure you’ve had at least one experience of trying to conceal, dry out or reduce a dreaded breakout on your skin….. And usually, it seems to occur right before an event.

I am no stranger to acne myself. I had the usual hormonal breakouts as a teen, but they were persistent, sore and red… I even recall not going to school some days because I was so self-conscious of my skin… then it calmed down in my later teens and reappeared with a vengeance in my early 20s. Ironically this was when I was studying at uni and working in a skin clinic where I had access to every topical skin care cream, serum, treatment and peel possible… but it got worse, it was only when I took a hard look at my lifestyle and stopped overdoing it that my skin improved… and now I’ve just turned 30 and I don’t recall the last time I felt worried about leaving the house because of my breakouts…. But it’s been a journey.

Welcome to episode number 9 of the Heal Thy Skin Podcast, I’m Marni, your host and today I am speaking with Carly Whytcross, Dermal Clinician at CAPS plastic surgery clinic in Canberra.

Carly graduated with a Bachelor of Health Science Dermal Therapies degree in 2010. For the past 12 years, she has worked in Canberra’s leading Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Clinic (CAPS Clinic) for renowned Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, Dr Alastair Taylor.

Carly is the Dermal Clinician and unit manager within the practice and her experience and dedication have led her towards mentoring, training and educating new staff within the practice as well as a past clinic supervisor at Victoria University. She is passionate about all facets of the dermal sector including advocating on behalf of and creating awareness of the special skill set of Dermal Clinicians. Clinically, her eye for detail has created a special interest in treating acne and photodamage.

Carly shares how viewing acne more holistically leads to better outcomes and some practical tips on how you can treat or seek out treatment for your own acne or acne scarring.

03 Mar 2020Getting Your Life Back: Breast Cancer Rehabilitation with Denise Stewart of Breast and Shoulder Rehab00:50:25

More women than ever are surviving breast cancer. With advances in early detection and treatment, we see patients living long, full lives after breast cancer. These patients often are eager to get back to their normal activities, but side effects from treatment sometimes hold them back. Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and surgery are effective treatments for breast cancer, but nerve damage, swelling, and soreness can sometimes occur.   There’s this notion that recovering from cancer is just going to be bad. But it doesn’t have to be.   On this week's podcast episode Marni will be speaking with Denise Stewart, Director of Breast and Shoulder Rehab. Denise is an Occupational Therapist trained in Australia at University of Queensland. Her career started at a major public hospital, providing rehabilitation to people with very serious and chronic illness and injuries. With the introduction of workplace rehabilitation in the 80's, Denise moved into the private health sector and helped injured workers return to work. This experience created a passion for workplace injury prevention and the importance of good return to work programs. This same concern for a person's recovery and the importance of returning to work was applied to her work with women after breast cancer. For 25 years, Denise has been a leader in developing improved rehabilitation services for this special client group. Empowering people to take control of their health and well-being has been the driving force for her latest work in developing educational resources for clients. Knowledge is shared about common physical issues experienced by women after breast cancer. Listen with us, as Denise uncovers the truths and misconceptions about breast cancer rehabilitation.
