With them is a bruised and beaten down Barney, and Tris, who by leaving abruptly brought suspicion upon herself. A hundred years ago a massive quake sundered the eastern shores of Valderian, leaving devastation in its wake and creating what is now referred to as The Shattered Lands. The port town of Edgewater to the north managed to turn the geographical blight into something of a tourist trap in later years, giving a minor boost to their stalling economy. And for a time things were considered good, although you might have gotten a different answer if you polled any random passersby along Edgewater’s main streets. In fact, if you managed to talk to everyone in the town you’d discover a shared emotion: dread.
