23 Apr 2024Deepdale Podcast - North Norfolk Railway (The Poppy Line) & Wroxham Barns - April 202400:37:13

Hello and welcome to the Deepdale Podcast.  I’m Jason and it’s April 2024.  Thanks for listening to our little slice of North Norfolk life.  We hope that you are managing to enjoy the wonders of Spring somewhere beautiful, and that the weather is giving you both time outdoors and excuses to enjoy a local hostelry or café.

This month I headed East from Deepdale into North Norfolk to visit two of the premier attractions in this beautiful part of the world - North Norfolk Railway and Wroxham Barns.  Both are long standing parts of the local tourism industry and it was great to find out more about their offering and history.

Before we dive into steam trains, crafts and cute animals, there have been lots of additions to the events programme, in particular rural craft workshops on Deepdale Farm, more additions to the street food we are hosting, and hundreds of additional events have been added from all over North Norfolk and West Norfolk.  You can see full listings on our website at deepdalecamping.co.uk/events/

Deepdale Farm are hosting their Open Farm Sunday event on Sunday 2nd June.  It’s a free event, themed ‘Farming with nature’ and is a great chance to visit the organic farm, explore their machinery, find out about invertebrates, bats & birds and have a go at green woodworking or enjoy a guided farm walk.  Head to deepdalefarm.co.uk for more information and to book tickets.

The accommodation on site for Deepdale Festival 2024 is all sold out, but day tickets are available and we are working with lots of local accommodation.  Full details are on the festival website deepdalefestival.co.uk

And lastly a reminder that The Pantaloons join us again this summer with their wonderful open air theatre. This year we’ll be hosting their hilarious versions of The Importance of Being Earnest on Wednesday 12th June and The Merry Wives of Windsor on Thursday 22nd August. To book tickets and for more information go to deepdalecamping.co.uk/theatre/

Enjoy the listen, and we hope to see you very soon.

Welcome to the Deepdale Podcast, this is the July 2024 episode. This month Jason chats with two local residents, who both started life in Brancaster Staithe & Burnham Deepdale, and who like Jason went off to explore the wider world and found themselves being called back to the beautiful North Norfolk Coast.

First up Jason chats with Amanda Loose, the editor of North Norfolk Living magazine. Then we have a wildlife update from Oli of One Stop Nature Shop while he mans their stall at the Global Bird Fair. And then Jason chats with Martin Billing, serial entrepreneur and producer of the excellent North Norfolk the Guide.

Thanks for listening. If you enjoy the listen then please do leave a review and subscribe through which ever app or directory you usually get your podcasts. Best of all let others know about our little slice of North Norfolk life, and we hope you’ll join us for future episodes. The full back catalogue is available through any good podcast app. Enjoy this months episode.

00:00 - Intro

01:01 - Deepdale Podcast Theme Tune by Jess Morgan

_____

02:04 - Amanda Loose

Editor of North Norfolk Living

North Norfolk Living magazine celebrates 20 years in 2024, and when Jason chatted with Amanda, she was deep into the editing of the bumper edition that hits shelves in mid July. Amanda chats about how she came to edit the magazine, what the magazine has to offer, and life before returning to the beautiful North Norfolk Coast.

_____

17:09 - Oli Reville

One Stop Nature Shop

Thank you to Oli for another wildlife update letting visitors know what they can enjoy on the North Norfolk Coast. He updates us, while manning their stand at the Global Bird Fair at Rutland Water. A quiet summer so far, however excitement builds as reverse migration and wading birds move back through enroute to Winter locations. You can always pop into One Stop Nature Shop at Dalegate Market for up to date sighting information and of course a great range of equipment.

_____

18:54 - Martin Billing

North Norfolk the Guide (amongst other things)

Martin chats with Jason about how North Norfolk the Guide came about, who would have thought it had a Las Vegas connection. He runs us through the range of retail outlets that he and his wife Sarah run in Wells-next-the-Sea and Burnham Market. And he explains how Norfolk Restaurant Week came about, and we discover that over 40,000 diners eat with the event each year.

_____

Thank you for listening to July’s episode. We love putting together this podcast, and always welcome suggestions of people we should interview, soundscapes we should include, or events we should cover. Please send your suggestions to podcast@deepdalepodcast.co.uk

13 Sep 2024Deepdale Festival Podcast - The Henry Girls, Ross Stewart, Elizabeth & Jameson - Episode 500:38:03

Thanks for listening to the fifth in our collection of special Deepdale Festival Podcasts in 2024. Jason is your host for this series.

In this episode Jason chats with Lorna and Karen from The Henry Girls, who are playing on Sunday, Ross Stewart, who is playing on Friday, and Elizabeth & Jameson, who perform on Friday.

Lorna and Karen from The Henry Girls join me over the internet from Ireland. 10 years ago Chris drove to Birmingham one evening to see them play in the Kitchen Garden Café. When he bought his CD after the gig, they wrote on his purchase that they hoped to make it to Norfolk someday. So you can understand how excited he is that he’s hosting them for Deepdale Festival 2024.

Ross is a local, living in Norfolk for most of his life, but you wouldn’t know from his accent or his support of Scottish sports teams. He chats about creating music and finding his style.

Hannah and Griff, aka Elizabeth & Jameson, chat about how they came to music, Hannah’s love of Welsh rugby and being surrounding by the music of the valleys.

Thank you to all of them for allowing us to play a sample of their music. From The Henry Girls we play A Time To Grow, from Ros Stewart we play Sweet Morning, and from Elizabeth & Jameson we play Old Town.

Enjoy this episode, and we hope you’ll listen back to the rest of the Deepdale Festival series.

19 Jul 2019Deepdale Podcast - July 201800:12:33

Welcome back to the Deepdale Podcast, the place to listen ‘If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air, Quaint little villages here and there’. We’re all about the beautiful North Norfolk Coast, and what’s happening here at Deepdale Backpackers & Camping and in the local area.

This is our second edition, and its July now. The weather has been dry and sunny here for what seems like months. When was the last time we had so many beach days in one Summer?

In this edition we’ve chatted with one of our lovely business associates, MarGins Walking & Glamping, and there are various other bits of news. We’ll have our usual overview of events locally, and a heads up of Deepdale Music events in the diary, including the Sunday Session at the end of July, the Open Air Shakespeare in early August, and of course the Deepdale Festival.

The exciting news from late June, is that Mini Deepdale at the Royal Norfolk Show won the Best Tourism Stand Award. We teamed up with MarGins Walking & Glamping, Retro Campers Norfolk and the Norfolk Coast Partnership to create this little slice of Deepdale, and couldn’t quite believe it when a couple of bowler hatted gentlemen wandered over and handed us a rosette and certificate. Proof, as if you needed it, that cooperative working is the way to go. We get a cup, which we’ll proudly display in Deepdale Visitor Information Centre when its engraved.

14 Dec 2020Deepdale Podcast - Favourite Music Releases of 2020, Farm Chat and Christmas Tunes - December 202001:11:36

Thanks for listening to the December 2020 episode of the Deepdale Podcast, our end of year celebration of fabulous music from some of our favourite artists. Many have either played at Deepdale or we’d love them to play at Deepdale. Chris, Jason and Nathan bring you our Top Music Releases in 2020, farm chat and our favourite indy Christmas tunes (effectively the Deepdale Christmas Album).

______

Chris’ Favourite Music Releases in 2020

Jason set Chris the challenge to pick 8 albums that reflected his listening in 2020, and what a set of albums he’s selected. We hope you will help these artists by buying their music, preferably directly from the artists.

The Jayhawks – XOXO

The Jayhawks are Sheila’s favourite band, and she introduced Chris to their music. They got to meet the band at Moseley Folk Festival last year. Great album, and well worth purchasing.

Courtney Marie Andrews – Old Flowers

Another discovery for Chris & Sheila at the Moseley Folk Festival. This album helps support her music crew who have had such a tough year. Not the happiest of albums, but fabulous music.

Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit – Reunions

Chris feels Jason is a ‘master songwriter’, and loves his body of work, but particularly this new album. Our Jason (not Mr Isbell) is new to The 400 Unit and loved this selection.

Little Red Kings – The Magic Show Part 1

A band we love hosting at Deepdale, and they were due to headline Deepdale Festival 2020. Fingers crossed they’ll be with us in 2021 instead. A band that is so talented and should be better know out side of Norfolk.

The Chicks – Gaslighter

Formerly The Dixie Chicks, The Chicks changed their name to step away from the racist conertations of their former name. We’ve all been fans of these ladies for a long time, and this album is a return to form.

Das Fenster & The Alibis – Lucky Charms & Firearms

These lovely guys have produced a fabulous album this year. Fans of Deepdale Music events will have heard some of the tracks during performances from these guys. A great buy, will make you want to dance, and bring a smile to your face.

Kirsty Merryn – Our Bright Night

Kirsty was due to perform at Deepdale Festival 2020 in St Mary’s Church, but Covid has moved that performance to September 2021. This beautiful album, taking you through one night is a beautiful piece of work.

Martin Simpson – Home Recordings

What a brilliant album created in lockdown at home. Martin was due to play at Deepdale Festival 2020, and has kindly agreed to move his performance to September 2021, really looking forward to that.

No one, who knows Chris’ love of music, will be the slightest bit surprised that he struggled to pick just 8 albums. So we gave him leeway and allowed him to include some honourable mentions.

This Is The Kit – Off Off On

Chris describes This Is The Kit’s album as one you could never get bored with. He would love Kate Stables and her band to play at Deepdale Festival, so this is an official invite to them, and we hope we can host them sometime soon.

Kathryn Williams & Carol Ann Duffy – Snow Angel

Chris is quick to point out this isn’t an album, its a single specially produced for Christmas 2020. Kathryn was the one that got away in 2020, as was very nearly booked for the Deepdale Festival. With hope the stoned will aline and we’ll hear Kathryn performing at Deepdale sometime soon.

The Shackleton Trio – Gonna Retrain As Santa Claus

Our lovely friends the shacks, have taken government advice and headed the call for the arts to retrain, choosing to take the job of Santa Claus. We approve of the career move, but would miss their music if they did retrain!

Man The Lifeboats – When The Time Bell Rings

We’ve welcomed these guys to Deepdale a couple of times, and they set the Brick Barn alight, with everyone dancing and loving the music. Due to play at our Beltane in May, which has been hopefully reset for this coming May, fingers crossed. Great listen.

_____

Farm Chat

After all that lovely music, Nathan & Jason have a bit of Farm Chat. A quiet time in terms of drilling crop and other workson Deepdale Farm, but our Winter Barley is poking its head out of the soil, our woodland management plan is taking shape, and the process of going organic continues.

_____

Christmas Tunes

Last up on the podcast is what has been become known as the Deepdale Christmas Album. (Although its just samples, tempting you to head online to buy the actual songs)

Little Red Kings – Intro

Lisa Redford – I Believe in Father Christmas

The Shackleton Trio – Gonna Retrain as Santa Claus

Man The Lifeboats – Whisky For Christmas

Kathryn Williams & Carol Ann Duffy – Snow Angel

Marina Florance – The Winter Wind

Dusky Sunday – Every Christmas

Fred’s House – Christmas at Home

Tilly Moses – I’ll Be Home for Christmas

Rattlebox – Ye Mariners All

And of course the whole podcast was started by the lovely intro track by the hugely talented Jess Morgan.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS!
