11 Mar 2024 | Why Hunting Activism Matters with Dan Gates | 01:08:39
Why Your Activism Matters with Dan Gates Show Notes:
Dan Gates runs Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management (CRWM) as Executive Director. CRWM was formed back in 2017, and they do a lot of hunting lobbying, advocacy, and education as a 501(c). Their mission is to enhance, promote, and defend the North American model of wildlife conservation and responsible wildlife management. Dan is also the President of the Colorado Trappers and Predator Hunters Association and he’s been working with us on some things for Howl for Wildlife.
Dan has intimate knowledge of wildlife issues and believes that if you’re not sitting at the table, you’re on the menu. Politics is part of wildlife conservation, but many hunters just want to hunt and not get involved. There are only a few people in the fight, and we’ve lost a lot of ground due to our current organizations not being organized properly.
Here, Dan and I talk about how CRWM is working to make significant changes and cast a wider net. There’s a big disconnect in the hunting community when things come up that seemingly don’t impact them directly. Dan shares his thoughts on how we can get people to connect the dots. We also discuss what Dan’s doing to make key changes in the legislature, how the anti-hunting world tries to push their agenda, and more.

08 Jan 2024 | Deer Behavior 101 with Moriah Boggess | 00:55:22
Deer Behavior 101 with Moriah Boggess Show Notes:
I think it’s important to understand deer behavior, regardless of which kind of specific deer you hunt. Getting a good, rounded perspective on what deer do and being able to apply that to your hunting is key. Moriah Boggess is a subject matter expert on deer biology and management. As a deer biologist, Moriah spends his time doing research coordination, working with policy, and handling disease surveillance and management.
Moriah lives on the coast in North Carolina, and we start by talking about the different rut periods all around the country. Sometimes, within a state, you can have several ruts as you move around. We then get into home range, how it changes with the seasons, and how it impacts hunting. Bucks have two jobs in life: to stay alive and leave a legacy. Depending on what time of the year it is, home ranges change based on these priorities.
Moriah and I also discuss scrapes, rubs, and other things that’ll help us uplevel our deer hunting game. Both are communication mechanisms for deer, and Moriah talks about their different purposes. Our conversation also includes how the weather affects deer behavior, behavioral attributes of deer that you can key on to help you tag out, deer body language, and more.

11 Sep 2023 | Perfecting Your Shooting Game with Anthony Stallone | 00:56:24
Perfecting Your Shooting Game with Anthony Stallone Show Notes:
Mr. Phoenix Shooting Bags, Anthony Stallone, stops by to share some top tips just in time for rifle season. Whether you’re hunting antelope or elk, making even just a few tweaks to your technique can get you closer to that one shot kill. Many people think they can shoot, but the more you go over the right steps to correct your shot, the better off you’ll be. We kick things off by talking about the most common mistakes Anthony sees and what you should be practicing now up until the hunt.
Anthony shares his tips for the perfect trigger pull and how to fight off target panic. We also talk about why the type of trigger you use matters less than how well you can pull it. Success always comes from mitigating all the factors you can control. We get into why a lighter trigger is better and why it’s worth taking your bullets out of the gun if you’re moving locations. Anthony also suggests getting a bubble level for your rifle.
We talk about how shooting bags and cheek rests make a huge difference in your aim. Finding that sweet spot before you shoot is key, along with regular practice. You also want to figure out your ballistics and which bullets your gun likes, because they’re all different. We wrap up with Anthony’s tips for how to shoot the perfect 1,000-yard shot. If you can master that, everything else is a chip shot.

10 Dec 2023 | Upcoming AZ and WY Draw with Dave Barnett | 01:06:10
Upcoming AZ and WY Draw with Dave Barnett Show Notes:
Dave Barnett joins me here to talk about the Arizona elk and antelope draw. We also get into Wyoming, since that draw is coming up as well, and it’s a hot ticket. 2023 sailed by and Dave and I talk about how our year in hunting shaped up as things come to a close. I recap the highs and lows of some of my trips, and I’m hoping to redeem myself a little bit over the next couple of months.
There are no changes going into this year’s Arizona draw, and it’s looking like February 13th will be the draw deadline. Make sure you have your credit card updated by then, or else you might miss out on a tag! Dave and I talk about how the Arizona system works, including how bonus points work, how to view choices, and how they do their drawing. In my opinion, it’s the best system out there.
Dave and I get into how we feel about droughts and hunting according to moon phases. We then get into Wyoming and their draw system, which is one of the most convoluted out there. Dave shares how the units are set up and how they differ from Arizona. We talk about how the tags are split up, the difference between the regular and special draws, and more.

19 Feb 2024 | Michael Cravens Hunting in AZ | 01:08:42
Arizona Wildlife Federation Podcast Collaboration with Michael Cravens Show Notes:
Michael Cravens runs the Arizona Wildlife Federation Podcast, and we recently joined forces to do a show together. Michael is the Advocacy and Conservation Director for the Arizona Wildlife Federation, which is the oldest conservation organization in the state. The group’s roots are in sporting, and they formed back in 1923 to create the first commission for wildlife management in Arizona to take it out of the hands of the legislature.
The Arizona Wildlife Federation works on education, volunteer habitat improvements and restorations, and advocacy, which is Michael’s primary role. He tracks good and bad bills and acts accordingly as it benefits the organization. Here, Michael and I discuss some of the things going on around the country right now and how they bleed into what we have going on in Arizona.
It’s so important for citizens to be educated on wildlife issues so they can make informed voting decisions on what’s happening. Michael and I chat about misinformation and what we can do to combat it. We also share our thoughts around conservation vs. preservation, why hunting advocacy impacts far more than just hunting alone, and much more.

31 Jul 2023 | High-powered Elk Calling with Beau Brooks | 01:04:18
High-powered Elk Calling with Beau Brooks Show Notes:
Two-time world champion Beau Brooks has been staying busy and working hard on his new business, Riven. His company sells top-quality elk instruments, like bugle tubes and mouth calls. Beau grew up on the West Coast hunting in Washington and Oregon and says he’ll shoot whatever walks in, unlike his dad, who’s a big bull hunter. He guides a couple of hunts a year, and archery is his passion. Beau loves to call elk and doesn’t have to let the arrow fly to have a good time.
Beau and I have a conversation about his all-wood bugle tube, which intrigues me. He started out building calls as a teenager and experimenting with materials about six or seven years ago. He tried out several materials, like aluminum, but nothing worked as well as wood. Beau and a friend wound up making a prototype out of maple that didn’t look too great but sounded amazing. It was tough trying to make it all work, but they tweaked the design a bit more until it was perfect. Beau even wound up winning Worlds with it!
I asked Beau some tactical questions, including what he’s going to do differently this year versus last year’s hunts. He’s changing it up by heading to new places, like the Southern Oregon coast, and plans on relying on glassing more than he usually does. We also talk about what Beau does when things are slow, but he knows elk are hanging around. Beau also shares tips on how to change your call techniques when you’re not getting a response and how to handle bulls that bugle but then move around.

24 Jul 2023 | Lessons Learned with Joe Eppele | 01:05:39
Hunting Media, Argentina, and Hunting Lessons Learned with Joe Eppele Show Notes:
Former pro athlete Joe Eppele joins me here to share some epic hunting stories. He grew up in a logging town up in British Columbia and got into fishing at an early age. As Joe got older, his love of the outdoors took a bit of a backseat when he decided to pursue a football career. He started out at Washington State, then got drafted in the CFL. Once he retired, he became the Director of Business Development and a co-host for Wild TV, which is Canada’s largest hunting and outdoor TV network. Joe and I get into the evolution of the hunting media industry and where it is today.
Joe and I talk about our favorite gear, and we even wear the same boots and pants! We also both got stuck in Argentina right when COVID hit, and we talk about that whole ordeal. Joe also shares a couple of hunting stories, starting with his most memorable. Sheep season’s right around the corner, and last year he had a pretty wild trip in northern BC. One morning, he saw a bunch of young rams, with a couple of legal ones in the mix. It was a day and a half's hike to get in, and he was only with a cameraman. Since it was only the two of them, hauling the ram he got on the way out was a whole process.
Then, Joe shares a story of a hunt that taught him a lot about preparedness in the backcountry. He and his crew went in hard during an elk hunt and had some close calls with some bulls. One day, they woke up early to hike up a faraway mountain. They had planned on it only being a day, but they wound up in a nasty spot. They ate all of their food and drank all of their water to plan for the hike back out, but a bull chirped up, so they decided to wait. Just before last light, Joe gets a perfect shot on him at last light. They contacted their camp, and they showed up with a bottle of whisky. The story gets better from there.

22 Jan 2024 | Shafer | 01:21:21
Shafer the passion to leave your mark Show Notes:
Typically, any music that has anything about hunting in it is in the country genre, but Michael Shafer is breaking the mold. His music is so unique and filled with positive messaging. I’m originally from Brooklyn, and I grew up on rap and hip hop and his style immediately resonated with me. Shafer joins me here to discuss his musical journey, and we talk about the success he’s seen so far.
Shafer’s from Utah, and hunting has always been a part of his family heritage. He was influenced by hip hop as a city kid. When you think of a rapper, you don’t usually think about a white, Mormon kid from Utah, but Shafer is blazing his own trail. We talk about where he gets his inspiration from, how he writes his music, and how he deals with haters.
Shafer and I dive into how his music humanizes hunting and how his message serves as a voice for hunting advocacy. Shafer also shares one of his best hunting stories. If you want to hear some of Shafer’s music, check him out on Instagram and YouTube (linked below).

Secrets to a Solid Elk Hunt with Sam Davis
Show Notes:
Sam Davis grew up in Wyoming, spending a ton of time outdoors and his dad was an outfitter. He’s been bow hunting since he was 15 out West, shooting everything from mule deer to elk. Sam’s a DIY hunting guy and goes for over the counter tags. He’s also been a guide for 23 seasons. Growing up, Sam didn’t realize how much being around animals shaped his hunting career, but looking back, he’s seen a ton of stuff that many guys won’t.
I pick Sam’s brain about elk hunting, and we kick things off by talking about the best ways to narrow down hunting areas. We talk about why you shouldn’t be afraid to communicate with other hunters to pick up good tips and the top terrain features to look for when you’re scouting elk. Sam likes to work with drainages, open pockets where elk feed, and areas where they can bed, and he walks through his techniques.
Then we get into Sam’s ideal day of elk hunting. He’s an aggressive hunter, and he likes to move towards elk immediately after spotting them. Sam also shares what he’s learned from past hunts, how he handles hearing an elk while he’s glassing, and a story where he had an a-ha moment that changed the way he hunts.

Victory Drive Podcast Collaboration with Jacob Johnson Show Notes:
I was recently asked to collaborate with Jacob Johnson, a fellow hunting advocate and host of the Victory Drive Podcast. Here, Jacob and I cover a lot of ground. In the first portion of our collaboration, we chat about where in the country we’ve hunted and what’s on our bucket list. We get into details about a giveaway I’m doing on a mule deer hunt valued at over $1,300, and the proceeds are going to Howl for Wildlife. We also talk about hunting advocacy and how you can get involved.
Jacob and I talk about the problem with the strategy of replacing human hunters with apex predators, like coyotes. We’re seeing reductions in discounted tags and programs because of the increase in wolves and the reduction in game. I share how Howl for Wildlife is fundraising and the impact we’re having on trying to turn things around. We also discuss ways to get everyone on board, even non-hunters.
Towards the end of our conversation, we chat about the support hunting receives from gun advocacy and sport shooting and how the anti-gun mentality hurts our cause. We talk about some of the bills in play and how some taxation initiatives may set us back. We wrap up with some thoughts around our frustrations with current advocacy efforts and what it would take to make us the most powerful.

05 Feb 2024 | Mr. Consistent Creed Christinat | 00:49:23
Mr. Consistent Creed Christinat Show Notes:
Creed Christinat is usually a do-or-die Coues deer guy, but he recently shot a giant mule deer. Here, he shares the story about how he got this buck. Creed tried to walk away, but he was just way too impressive to pass up. He had a history with the animal, and Creed goes through the whole journey from when he got the tag to when he took him down.
Even though he says he fails a lot more than he wins, Creed is totally "Mr. Consistent” and puts in a ton of work. Creed says the trophy is in the eye of the beholder, and we talk about how much respect we have for people who ultimately get the job done within the timeframes they have, which sometimes isn’t a lot.
Creed hasn’t scored his muley buck quite yet, and he says he’d rather enjoy him for a bit before he does so. We talk about why we wait sometimes and how, in some cases, we’d rather not know. Creed also shares a great story about an encounter with a coyote on another antelope buck hunt. After a few days of tracking the buck, he sees it flying out of the trees with a coyote on his tail and chases him right out into a meadow! After running in his direction, they turn, and Creed talks about the decision he had to make.

Throwback thurs Early Elk Season with Shannon Mobbs
Show Notes: Shannon Mobbs is a buddy of mine and it’s time to talk about elk season since it’s right around the corner. I’m about to head to New Mexico to hunt antelope and a friend of mine has a cattle ranch and I was able to get a landowner tag. It sounds like it will be promising, but I have no idea what to expect. The tag is good for three days and I can use any weapon. Antelope hunting is a lot of fun and I’m taking a friend who’s a first timer.
Shannon shares what he likes to do to prepare for the upcoming elk season. He picks up his gym time and getting back into it after taking some down time is always difficult. Staying in shape all year round is always ideal and sometimes it helps to switch up your routine. It also helps to keep your equipment and technique dialed in and stay active in whatever season is happening at the time. Buying a new bow and changing up your equipment is all about timing and something that a lot of hunters take into consideration.
We get into scouting and Shannon talks about how he chooses the spots he uses for the season. He uses onX mapping technology to zoom in on travel paths and trails. He uses cameras a little bit but doesn’t depend on them. Elk hunting is far more competitive these days, which isn’t everyone’s thing, but Shannon enjoys it. He has tips for folks heading out in early elk season and the difference in tactics between the early season and later. We talk about the moon phases as well and how it impacts elk in different areas. It’s been a while since I’ve had Shannon on, so he spends some time catching us up on his best hunting stories since our last conversation.

21 Aug 2023 | Broadheads and Arrow Flight Testing with Iron Will Bill | 01:03:39
Broadheads and Arrow Flight Testing with Iron Will Bill Show Notes:
Bill Vanderheyden (or Iron Will Bill, as I like to call him) is the co-founder of Iron Will Outfitters, which is known for its fantastic broadheads. Here, we talk all about arrow flight and some of the testing Bill’s done recently. Hopefully, this information will help you develop your own system when it comes to knowing what to shoot. We kick things off with a recap of some of Bill’s recent hunting trips, including turkey, pigs, and bears.
Bill’s reason for testing arrow flight is that there’s not a lot of current research out there. Most of it’s on target archery, and the aerodynamics change quite a bit when you put a fixed blade broadhead on the front. With the right arrow and bow set up, you can get these broadheads to fly a decent distance, but it is a challenge since they’re way less forgiving. Bill talks about sponsoring a university project where he can eliminate his bias and have researchers look at different designs and how well they perform. He also shares the six factors they looked at during testing.
Bill and I talk about what to use to improve your own performance out on the hunt. When you build arrows, it’s important to have a starting point, and we talk about how to build the best arrow. 15 Jul 2024 | Shooting ourselves in the foot | 01:17:51
Here, I sit down with Charles Whitwam, President of Howl for Wildlife, and we get into all of the latest happenings in the world of hunting advocacy. We kick things off by talking about a giveaway exclusively for Howl members. We’re giving away a fishing trip in Louisiana, offshore and inshore, with the MeatEater crew. If your membership is current as of August 10th, you’re automatically entered.
Charles and I talk about some of the ways the hunting industry shoots ourselves in the foot. With Howl, we don’t want to alienate anyone, and we partner with a ton of organizations, even if they’re competitors of each other. We’re all in this together, and it’s our philosophy to link up and become a stronger force. As long as you’re portraying hunting in a positive light, we want to work with you.
There’s so much bashing within the community, especially around big names and influencers, that it takes away from all the good that’s happening. Charles and I talk about Howl’s mission and how we want to get more people involved. We also chat about some of the anti-hunting legislation that’s bubbling up and what you can do to make a difference. What’s Inside:

07 Aug 2023 | Elk season with Jermaine Hodge | 01:06:16
Elk season with Jermaine Hodge Show Notes:
I’m catching up with my friend Jermaine Hodge, and we kick things off by talking about summer hunting plans. I’m headed up to hunt elk in Idaho, and Jermaine is as well. It's a tough country to get into, and Jermaine’s planning a trip with two other world champions—watch out, elk! They’re going in with three tags and 15 days to get it done, so they’re going to go for it. Jermaine’s also going to spend some time hunting late season elk in Colorado.
You can’t guarantee success on a hunt, but it’s all about the experience. Some people look down on those who go out with guides and outfitters, but you don’t realize how much is still in their hands. Jermaine and I talk about the value of going out with a guide. Jermaine also drew a cow moose tag in Colorado, and he’s excited to fill his freezer up. We also talk about some of the expos Jermaine’s looking forward to and the competitions and contests going on there.
Jermaine has a couple of great elk stories, and he shares all the details here. Elk season can be a total grind, and he shares a story from a trip he went on with his wife in 2009. On day one, they both made a kill. At the end of the season, Jermaine’s good friend still had a tag to fill, and he talks about how they got the job done. We also talk about late season hunts and share some stories from those hunts as well.

24 Aug 2024 | Things don't always go as they should San Carlos bear hunt | 00:57:58
I’m here with Mr. Phoenix Shooting Bags himself, Anthony Stallone. He’s prepping for an upcoming hunt that I’m unfortunately not attending, but he runs through his plans and what he’s got on deck. Anthony drew a strip tag for archery hunting deer in AZ, which is pretty much the golden goose. Then, we dive into the Cliff Notes version of my latest bear hunt.
Some pretty scary stuff happened on the hunt, including a frantic call my wife made to Anthony, and I recap it all here. I drew a tag in San Carlos and talked about the process and the tribal guide service I used for hunting on the reservation. There was something really eerie about the area, and we were super far from civilization.
Although it was stressful and challenging at times, the hunt was also full of a lot of cool experiences. We wrap up our conversation with a little chat about my gripes with social media and keyboard warriors. It’s always a few people who ruin it for everyone. I almost didn't post this episode because of the criticism I received but I realized that a lot gets lost in translation of a caption so maybe after a few people hear the story they will have a little more compassion for the situation. I felt terrible for my mistakes and is the main reason I put myself on blast when I posted about it. Either way I made the decision to share the episode. If you want an awesome bear recipe check out my latest blog post.

Hunting the Ribeye in the Sky with John Odell Show Notes:
John Odell joins me to chat about hunting the ribeye in the sky, also known as the sandhill crane. I drew a tag for the first time this year, so selfishly, I want to find out all about it. John was a wildlife biologist for Arizona Game and Fish for 17 years. He worked in the small game program, and last year, he felt a calling to leave the department to move to Buenos Aires, Argentina, for about eight months. There, he learned some Spanish and spent some time at a culinary school.
John’s back in the States now, and he’s currently cooking at the El Tovar restaurant in the Grand Canyon. Hunting and food go hand in hand, and now John gets to explore both of his passions. John and I get into the history of the culinary world of wild game, and he shares some of his experiences from around the world. We also talk about the history of conservation in America and people’s perspectives on hunting today.
Next, we get into sandhill crane hunting. They’re the oldest bird in the fossil record that’s remained unchanged, and they're really a sight to see. John runs through some of their stats, characteristics, and behavioral traits and shares a little about how the species has changed over time. John also shares hunting tips, including which type of sandhill crane is best to eat, insights into how these birds move around, the best hunting tactics, decoys and calls, and more.

18 Dec 2023 | South Dakota Recap with Dan Graff | 01:08:08
South Dakota Recap with Dan Graff Show Notes:
We’re doing a South Dakota recap here with my longtime friend Dan Graff. The hunting game is always evolving, and Dan talks about some of the changes he’s noticed since he was last out. Dan and I chat about being challenged when hunting with folks who put in more effort than you and how it can bring out the best in you and make you better. The people you hunt with always make the experience.
Here, Dan and I break down our trip from start to finish. Our first hunt was on November 5th and I glassed up a buck I called Too Tall. I share the highs and lows of trying to get him and how things ultimately turned out. Dan shares his perspective on how it all went down, and we talk about how things don’t always turn out as planned, even if you have the perfect setup.
Sometimes you see people on social media having successes, but no one ever shows the bad. It’s very easy to look at things like that and think everyone’s doing well. I’ve questioned my own self and have wanted to quit several times.
I’m putting this out there and showing my vulnerability because I want others who feel the same way to know they’re not alone. For me, hunting is part of what I am and when I don’t have success, I view it as a negative reflection of who I am. My point is, don’t allow years of positivity and success to be erased by negativity. Focus on the good.

Hunting Gets Political with Baker Leavitt
Show Notes:
Baker Leavitt is a Broker of Expertise and the Director of Strategic Relations over at Black Rifle Coffee Company. In the 2000s, he made a fortune in real estate, but when the economy crashed, he lost everything. From there, he went to NYU to learn Arabic, and he started the drink company Kill Cliff, which he sold in the late 2010s. He then started up a consulting company called Digital Mongoose, and today he invests with several top companies.
We kick off our conversation by discussing a recent incident in Wyoming where someone got fined for torturing a wolf. Most of the hunting community, including Howl for Wildlife, was appalled and it’s our goal to see some better legislation passed. Shockingly, some people are against the person being punished, and we share our thoughts.
Baker and I talk about his fishing trips, one of which was with Donald Trump Jr.! Every year, Baker shoots one elk, and he shares his experiences hunting in Utah and Colorado. He lives in Florida, but he also has a farm in Georgia where he hunts whitetail. Baker loves turkey hunting, too. We talk about some of the political stuff Baker’s involved in, and we wrap things up with Baker sharing a story about an elk hunt on horseback in Idaho.

02 Oct 2023 | Scoring Coues Deer with Jay Scott | 00:54:26
Scoring Coues Deer with Jay Scott
Show Notes: Even though I know how to score deer, I don’t feel confident telling people how to score Coues deer. So I brought Jay Scott on for an expert’s opinion on how to score them on the hoof.
For the novice or intermediate hunter, Jay recommends that you get as many antlers or horns in your hands as possible with a measuring tape. A lot of scoring just comes down to experience, so you’ll need to look over a lot of deer before you can get a better understanding of what a deer is on sight.
Measuring mistakes can add up quickly. If you’re a half-inch off on everything, then that’ll distort your final number. For hunters who are used to hunting in the East or the Midwest, scoring the Coues deer will be a different experience. When you break down deer, there are 4 main parts of the scorecard.
For most people, they talk about spread like it’s the most important factor in scoring, but for Coues deer, it is not. You want to be looking for a minimum length of 15-inches on the points and then everything else builds around that.
You can follow Jay on Instagram for some practice seeing pictures and comparing your guess to his. If you’d like one of his charts that will simplify the scoring process, you can email Jay at: JayScottOutdoors@gmail.com.

Talking Elk with the Western Huntsman with Jim Huntsman
Show Notes:
Jim Huntsman is the man behind the Western Huntsman Podcast. He’s a lifelong Western hunter, and his passion for the outdoors has taken him across multiple states in pursuit of everything from screaming bull elk to cutthroat trout on a fly rod. Jim is also dedicated to protecting the future of hunting and defending it against the fanatical anti-hunting community.
Jim grew up in Utah and joined the US Marines as a rifleman. There, he spent time stationed in North Carolina and served in Kosovo, Africa, and the Iraq War. After the Marines, Jim moved to North Idaho, where he met his wife, Nicole. Together, they have two daughters and are raising them on a 26-acre homestead.
Concerned for the future of hunting, Jim began writing for the hunting industry in 2016. In 2018, The Western Huntsman was started as a platform to write and share ideas with the sportsman community. On Christmas Eve of 2019, Jim launched the first podcast episode of The Western Huntsman and named his podcast studio after that season's bull... The Broken Tines Studio.
Here, Jim talks about what his ideal hunting trip looks like, which includes staying cozy in an RV. We then get into a little about wolf hunting and trapping and what the price of wolf hides goes for these days. We also chat about how trapping and hunting wolves keeps the elk population healthy, Jim’s go-to strategy for elk hunting, and more.

Mule Deer Tips with Jess Reveal Show Notes:
Jess Reveal lives in southern Utah, and she joins me here to chat about mule deer. Jess has been living in Utah for the past 10 years and grew up hunting with her dad out in Missouri. She didn’t find her way into bow hunting until she moved to Utah and met her husband. After he showed her the ropes, she eventually snagged her first muley while she was eight months pregnant with her daughter! Jess continues to dive deeper into archery hunting and is always eager to learn more.
There’s so much more to hunting than just going out and killing an animal. Jess wants to teach that lesson to her daughter, along with the respect that goes along with bow hunting. We talk about growing up hunting in a tree stand and the differences between that and archery. We’re spoiled today with phones and technology, but we’ve also become dependent on them. Jess and I talk about the evolution of hunting tech and how far we’ve come since the old days.
Jess shares her approach to the mule deer season, and we get into the tactics she’s used to get big bucks. Archery season is just a month long in Utah, but it’s a year long process for her. She watches them rut and how they’re acting and migrating, and she does a lot of legwork before the actual hunt. We also get into some elk hunting stories, how Jess finds new areas, and more.

Relating Health and Hunting, Linden Loren and James Fitzgerald
Show Notes: Without health, there is no hunting. Linden Loren and James Fitzgerald join me to discuss how our health affects hunting capabilities in season and our day-to-day life off season. James is a returning guest; I really lean on him for all things fitness. Linden is owner of ANION Outdoors and author of his upcoming book; Your Hunting Healthspan: 73 Ways Hunters Can Age Better & Prevent Disease.
The intent of Linden’s work is to positively impact the hunting community, both in the off-season and in-season. Linden gets his inspiration in part from the passing of his father when he was 18. His dad was a hunter, whose lifestyle choices whittled down his health. His hope is that he can inspire self-awareness in hunters, in that if I do more things in the favor of my health then I can do more of the hobby I love.
The better in shape we get not just physically, but mentally and spiritually, the more we understand that these are things we are able to do and can even make our hunt better. As hunters and people, we want to reach our highest human potential. This is something we can all agree on, but what does this look like? Linden says that this means moving into a mindset of prevention. This causes health results to build momentum. When people are feeling great all of the time, they are more likely to make healthier choices.
Start evaluating yourself, How do you feel? How is your mood? Get a foundation and a starting point. Really reflect on how you’re maximizing your minute. Are you putting in the effort in your relationships? Get a baseline of what your day to day is, and ask yourself truthfully: Do I think these things are working? When you’re more aware, and you realize how these practices came to be, this is where positive change will happen.
As a guy who has been trying to integrate health into this world. It’s kind of like hitting a brick wall. The main obstacle is to get the hunter to realize what you’re selling them. What hunters want and need is the silver bullet, this perfect answer to, how can I fix this? Linden’s book and philosophy are taking steps to get those answers into the hunter’s hands.

Title: Coues Deer with Fred Bohm Show Notes:
Fred Bohm’s from the Tucson area, and he joins me here to talk about coues deer. He’s originally from New Jersey but headed west to Colorado after college. He’s been an Arizona resident for about a year and a half but has been hunting in the state for over 10 years. Fred’s father taught him how to hunt when he was younger, and he became obsessed with bow hunting early in the game. He got into coues deer hunting after snagging an OTC tag.
Fred’s known for his photography of his hunting escapades and has had a passion for it since he was a teen. He loves to inspire others, and I’ve always been a fan of his photos. Coues deer hunting season is coming up soon, and here, I pick Fred’s brain on his favorite hunting tips and tricks. We kick things off by talking about the difference in behavior in coues deer compared to eastern deer. Fred shares the characteristics you can use to your advantage to score.
Fred’s hunted a lot of different habitats throughout Arizona, and he shares his favorite spots. He shares his top rules for stalking coues deer and how to approach it. Fred and I also discuss his three most critical factors to contribute to hunting success, how to find the right areas, recommendations for equipment, and more.

Catching Elk Fever with Ty Stubblefield
Show Notes:
From being a part of Born and Raised Outdoors to becoming the Executive Director of the Montana Wild Sheep Foundation, Ty Stubblefield has spent the last 25 years in hunting and conservation. Here, I pick Ty’s brain on elk hunting and he shares some stories from out in the wild. Ty started elk hunting when he was in high school without any mentorship, but after graduating, he joined up with a hunter at the sawmill, where he sharpened his skills.
Ty started out rifle hunting, but his mentor introduced him to bow hunting. Because his early hunting career was a struggle, Ty’s mission now is to help hunters learn as much as possible. Ty shares some of the biggest lessons he’s learned along the way and how he shot his first elk with a bow. You have to have a killer instinct and he says that’s the only way to be successful. Some people don’t have it, but it can be learned with consistency and practice.
Ty and I talk about his go-to approach for choosing an elk hunting area, his top criteria for picking a spot, and what he does once he gets there. We discuss how predation impacts where you hunt and how to draw the right tags. We also get into tips for creating opportunities in high pressure areas, Ty’s top elk calls, and some of his best hunting stories.

Archery Ops Podcast with Tim Gillingham Show Notes:
I recently had the privilege of joining Tim Gillingham on his Archery Ops Podcast. On his show, Tim talks with the top experts in archery and bowhunting about what it takes to shoot better target after target, hunt after hunt, and shot after shot!
Tim and I start off by talking about the history of the Days in The Wild Podcast and how it got to what it is today. We then get into hunting ibex in the Florida mountains of New Mexico, which for many hunters is the toughest hunt out there. It has the highest abandonment rate, and it’s physically brutal, not to mention the constant dodging of poisonous snakes. Tim and I share some stories and compare notes.
We also talk about bow hunting and why I’m considering picking up an even lighter bow to better manage in the cold weather. Tim shares some tips on ballistic efficiency and how to choose the right arrows at different site levels. We talk about how to shoot angles and trade some more stories around bow torquing.
Tim asks me how I prepare for the hunting season, both mentally and physically. I used to do sports training, and since 1998, I have changed my mentality around hunt-specific training. Tim and I talk about how we like to target practice. We wrap up with our ideas on bow hunting education and how to get more folks involved and on board.

Crazy Coues Deer Story with Dave Maher Show Notes:
I just had a crazy experience with a recent client on a Coues deer hunt, and Dave Maher’s here to help me unpack it all. Dave’s been on the show before, and he’s my go-to guy when it comes to gun stuff. My client was physically challenged, and I hunted with him for three days. I found several opportunities, but unfortunately, we couldn’t get to any fast enough.
I also had Ryan with me, and he later found a good buck. Even though my client could shoot and he had a good setup, we were too far away. I decided to try to get as close as I could, but the best I could do was 700 yards. All of a sudden, the buck comes out of a tree, and my client hits the buck’s shoulder. He took a second shot, and the buck shot straight up into the air and dove forward into some trees, but he was still alive!
We moved in a little closer to wait for the buck to do something, and he eventually stood up. My client shot again, but missed. At this point, we don’t have another shot, but the deer got up again. Ryan got his eyes on him, and the buck walked into some trees. From here, we go on a crazy chase to find this deer and he eventually goes down for good. Here, Dave gives his analysis of the hunt and his take on why this buck was so hard to take down.

Muley Hunting with Richie Wilhelm Show Notes:
Richie Wilhelm joins me for a little storytelling session, and I pick his brain on a few things. Richie owns and operates a small residential construction company in the La Crosse area of Wisconsin. He began the business around 15 years ago, and although self-employment comes with challenges, it’s allowed Richie to get the time off he needs around hunting season.
We kick things off by talking about Arizona deer hunting and how the weather impacts herds. Richie had two mule deer tags this year in different states, and he killed two of his top three ever. He had two bad years of chasing whitetails, but his muley chase paid off. We talk about spotting and stalking whitetails and which states are best for sitting in a tree stand.
Richie shares the story of the first muley buck he shot back in September. He had ten days on a solo trip and hunted an area that he had some intel on. He finally got him from around 59 yards away and hit the buck in the shoulder. Unfortunately, Richie lost him, but tried again and headed back out about a month later. After a bunch of trials and tribulations and a storm thrown in, he finally got him and felt like he was on cloud nine.

Muleys with Marc Smith and Jeremy Dugger Show Notes:
Marc Smith, and Jeremy Dugger (AKA Muley Mojo) joined me at the Hunt Expo. We enjoyed the show and got to catch up on a bunch of good stuff. Marc moved out into the Four Corners area of New Mexico back in ‘94/’95 for his job, and he met Jeremy, who was working at the local archery shop. They immediately hit it off, and they’ve been a dynamic duo ever since.
Marc and Jeremy share some stories from their hunts, and we kick off with a good one that shows how they split responsibilities between Jeremy’s scouting and game eye and Marc’s magnetic mule deer aura. We talk about whether or not game eye is a God-given gift or if it’s something that can be developed with practice. The guys also share how their seamless teamwork helps them bring down big bucks.
Jeremy gives some of his best scouting tips, why he’s a fan of tracking over glassing, and some of the tools he uses to get the job done. We chat about why getting up in scoring takes away from what hunting’s all about, how we feel about having to fill every tag we get, and Jeremy and Marc’s epic “shining beams” story.

Arizona Prop 134 - Just my take
Balanced Decision-Making: By requiring voter approval from all 30 legislative districts, Prop 134 ensures that wildlife and conservation policies reflect the interests of both urban and rural communities across the state.
Protects Science-Based Management: This approach guards against policies driven solely by urban populations, supporting evidence-based wildlife management.
Prevents "Ballot Box Biology": It reduces the risk of policies shaped by public sentiment alone, promoting more informed and sustainable conservation.
You will hear people say it’s a double edged sword, but I don’t believe this to be true. Lets think about it…
First off hunting and fishing since my involvement in it politically never seeks to add policy via ballot initiative because our measures typically have merit so it will be sponsored by a senator etc or brought up through the legislature.
Secondly outdoorsman will have a much easier time collecting signatures about hunting, fishing or wildlife in general from a citizen in Wilcox than they would in downtown phx, Conversely it’s a much harder road for the other side.
Lastly I don’t want to make this a partisan thing but if you want to think of it on the big stage.. the democratic party doesn’t want this to pass at all because they use the ballot initiative process more than anyone and they know right now that their largest constituency resides in Maricopa and Pima county. Lets say they want to stop a rancher from raising cattle they know they have a much easier time collecting signatures and get support from people that are removed from the issue.
And that’s exactly what this bill does it allows for a much more well balanced representation of the state on citizen initiated measures which is good for everyone!!!!!

Tales from the Bow Hunt with Trevor Thompson
Show Notes:
Los Angeles native Trevor Thompson didn’t grow up hunting, but you’d never know that today. He tried his hand at art school before joining the Navy and being a member of the Seal teams for nine years. After getting out, Trevor did a little bit of contracting before working for Black Rifle Coffee and now he works for Protekt Products, a veteran-owned supplement company.
Before he started working at Black Rifle, Trevor got introduced to bow hunting on a black bear hunt and was immediately hooked. He hasn’t gone a year without taking an animal since, and he mostly eats meat from his hunts at home. Trevor’s getting ready to head up to Kodiak to guide for brown bears. We chat a bit about the nature of bear hunting, how it’s changed, and how quota limits get set.
Trevor shares a story from a tough elk hunt he had last year on the west coast of Oregon. He had his mind set on using only a self bow, but things didn’t turn out quite as expected. We trade a couple other stories from past bow hunts and mind-boggling shots, and Trevor shares the story of how he got his first animal with a longbow in Maui.
If you’re a Howl for Wildlife member, you’ll get a discount on Protekt supplements. Check out their website below.

Hunting Javelina with Rick Forrest Show Notes:
Hunting javelina is near and dear to my heart, and I always have a good time doing it. The legendary Rick Forrest joins me here to share some of his javelina hunting tips. Rick’s been in the hunting space for a long time, especially in the engineering and gear areas. He’s an Arizona native and shot his first javelina at the age of 10. At 13, he got into archery and got hooked on bow hunting. The last deer he shot with a firearm was way back in ’86!
Rick’s killed a javelina every year since his first one, and some years he gets two. Between him and his family members, he’s been involved in around 300 kills. We kick off our conversation with some info about the calls Rick’s developed. He has some stuff on the fixed blade side in development as well. Next, we dive into javelina hunting. Rick shares his habitat tips for how to find them. Spending time scouting and glassing is key.
Rick and I share our thoughts on the best time to catch javelina, since we’ve caught them both at first light and later in the morning. We talk about why you shouldn’t pick on a herd too much and Rick’s top calling tips with examples. We also get into our experiences with what happens when Javelina goes on the attack and how to connect with Rick and buy a call.

Zach Hanson joins me to chat about his book Turning Feral as well as his journey from a career in AI tech to hunting. He’s currently gearing up for trapping season, which is his big push every year. We start by talking about our plans for the early season and why we’re looking forward to the later season. In hunting, we know things don’t always go our way, and we chat about how our failures make us appreciate our successes a whole lot more.
Zach’s first hunting teacher was YouTube, as he didn’t have anyone close to him in the sport. He then learned about hunting from his in-laws, and he got some education down in Tennessee. Once he got out west, he realized it was a different ball game, and he took advantage of some guidance out there. Zach shares how his interest in hunting started from an interest in food. After his divorce, he went all in on hunting and moved out to Idaho, where he now calls home with his new wife and their children.
Zach and I talk about how his experience with sports helped him cultivate a mindset that’s perfect for hunting. In our first syndicated HOWLCAST Update of 2024 we focus on How hunting is much more interconnected than you think and how losing hunting in other states will affect you. We also discuss two of the hotspots that need nationwide attention and support from the hunting and outdoors community: Washington State and Colorado. Because the anti-hunting industry uses their nationwide fundraising, legal and political power to attack at the local and state level, it has become crystal clear that hunters, anglers and supporters of true wildlife conservation need to rally together. The threats that face WA and CO this year can and will surface in dozens of other states - either by forcing changes to predator management, methods of take, taking away trapping or removing your ability to hunt/trail/track/retrieve game with sporting dogs & hounds.

Show Notes:
Dustin Wittwer is the host of the Finding Backcountry Podcast . Dustin’s also quite the mule deer hunter and grew up chasing them around as a kid. On his podcast, Dustin’s interviewed a ton of qualified hunters, which has helped him put together a roadmap for bettering his own hunting skills. Although he goes after a few elk, sheep, and moose tags, mule deer is Dustin’s sweet spot.
Dustin shares how he approaches his whole mule deer season, starting from the beginning of the year. He looks forward to all the planning and scheming that goes into getting tags and scoring points, and maybe even likes it more than the actual hunting. Dustin starts planning early, and his advice is to identify exactly what you want to go after and try to stay as close to home as possible so you’re able to really understand an area and revisit it.
We get into the best times to kill a high-country mule deer as well as the worst. Dustin also shares his approach to hunting out of state, reverse scouting tips, and a few ways hunters can think outside the box for a more successful hunt.

Prepping for Elk Season with Michael Batease Show Notes:
My buddy Michael Batease is here, and I’m picking his brain on elk hunting. He’s counting down the days until the season, which is right around the corner. I feel like this is the first hunting season that has snuck up on me. Michael got married just a few weeks ago, and now that his focus is off the wedding, he’s prepping for opening day. For the rest of July and August, he’ll be getting his trail cameras out and scouting new areas. Michael lives within a couple of hours from his hunting area, and he often does a quick trip up after work for a glassing session.
Each year, Michael picks a new area to explore, and he’s always looking for backup plans in case one place has too many people or experiences damage. Here, he shares his game plan when he goes into a new area, which starts from home using tools like Fat Map and OnX. He’s also strategic about where he sets up his trailer and base camp. Michael loves night bugling so that’s a big factor in how he chooses a spot, along with a place that has good access for vehicles.
Michael says if there’s a funky horn bull out there, he’ll find it. He loves calling for other people, and everyone he’s called for has at least one bull that’s scored well in the books. I talked to Michael about some of the things he does to tip the odds in his favor early in the year. He also shares why he loves cow and calf calls and some good stories about using calls on the hunt. I ask Michael how to track down a bull who’s far away and what to do if he has cows with him or if he’s alone. He provides tips on how to move in and shares some of the mistakes people make.

OTC Tag Changes in Colorado with Henry Ferguson
Show Notes:
Henry Ferguson is a longtime friend of mine and the President of the Colorado Bowhunters Association (CBA). Colorado Parks and Wildlife recently pushed for changes to the OTC tag system, and Henry and I break things down. Archery and bowhunting have become super popular, and there’s a lot of folks out in the woods right now. In a way, we’re victims of our own success.
Along with the CBA, Henry was pretty involved in the recent OTC rule changes. Here, we take a look at some of the pros and cons of the program changes and what it all means for the hunting community. Henry outlines the three options that were laid out on the table, and staying status quo wasn’t going to fly. According to him, they went with the lesser of two evils.
Henry shares what he believes are the benefits of the changes, many of which he says are yet to be seen. I play a bit of a devil’s advocate in our conversation and point out some of the potential pitfalls. Henry also shares some of the cons of the new rules and we talk about the future of hunting in Colorado and other states.

Jumping The String With Randy Ulmer Throwback
Show Notes: Randy Ulmer joins me today to talk about the dreaded “jumping the string.” What does it mean if a deer jumps the string? Something triggers the deer to jump when an arrow is shot; and moves before the arrow can get to it. Today we discover a few theories about just what causes deer to jump the string.
When an arrow is shot, deer can collapse their front legs and drop their chests in preparation to spring, and the arrow ends up missing them. This is a lot easier if their heads are down to start with. An alert deer is much more likely to jump than a non-alert deer, and older age class bucks are much more likely to jump than younger bucks. Older bucks have been pursued more, by other hunters and predators, so they are more sensitive. Young bucks jump as well, just not as often. Interestingly, when targeting a deer in a group, the other, non-targeted deer aren’t as likely to jump as the targeted one.
What causes a buck to jump? There are a couple theories. Some people think it’s the sound of the bow shooting the arrow, and another camp of people think it’s the sound of the actual arrow. Distance might also play a role. The closer you are to the deer, the more likely they are to detect you. The closer the deer, the louder the bow and arrow are, and the more likely the target deer is to jump. The kind of arrows you use makes a big difference as well. Thinner, slower, stiffer arrows make less noise, so deer are less likely to jump.
While frustrating, there are things you can do to cut back on the number of bucks that jump the string. Randy likes to use the same bow for every animal because he has a great feel for it. Put shock absorbing devices on the bow to mute the sound. Use a very small diameter arrow. You can’t avoid the problem completely but you can implement some of these to avoid losing that prize buck.

Short Description: There is nothing more frustrating than finding a prize buck, loading your bow, taking a shot, and then seeing the deer “jump the string.” Many, many bucks have been lost this way. Today Randy Ulmer and I discuss what causes a deer to jump the string and what can be done to curb it.

Making Strides in Advocacy and Conservation with Jana Waller and John Bair Show Notes:
I got to hang out with the dynamic duo, Jana Waller and John Bair, at the recent Western Hunting & Conservation Expo in Utah. Both of them are power players when it comes to hunting advocacy efforts, and I’m so thankful I got to chat with them. Jana has been in the hunting industry for 14 years but has been a hunter her whole life. She’s got 30+ years of big game hunting experience and started out hunting with her dad in Wisconsin.
John is also known as “John the Auctioneer,” and he’s one of the most successful conservation auctioneers in the nation. He served as Chairman of the Board on the Wildlife Board in Utah and has over two and a half decades of serving and volunteering experience in conservation throughout the state. John’s family has been in the Colorado ranching business for over 100 years, and he grew up an avid predator hunter.
John and Jana have done a ton to help us out at Howl for Wildlife, and together, they belong to 15 different conservation organizations. Hunting advocacy doesn’t work unless hunters are active, and here, we talk about some of the current efforts that are making a difference. We also talk about reaching and educating non-hunters, fundraising wins and challenges, and more.

Blacktail Hunting in the Pacific Northwest with Nathan Endicott Show Notes:
Nate Endicott and I sit down for a chat about blacktail hunting in the Pacific Northwest. He’s also hunted mule deer in Arizona a couple of times. We talk about the rapid changes to hunting in Arizona if you’re out of state, especially when it comes to getting a tag. Even though I advocated for it, it’s not the best system, and it has an impact on my guiding business. We also chat about how things go up north in Oregon, where Nate is.
I hunted in Washington last year during the blacktail rut, and Nate and I talk about late season deer hunting in Oregon. Washington and Oregon are similar, but there’s less opportunity in Washington. You could also get an all season tag every other year, so it all depends. If you’re a non-resident, it’s more expensive. Nate walks through the tag process for deer hunting, and we get into when the peak of the rut is for blacktail.
Nate and I talk about deer behavior on the west coast and how it’s different and similar to the east. In some areas, there’s a lot of private ground, and Nate maps out the geography and where the deer population hangs out. We talk about how to use deer behavior to your benefit, how our experience over the years has made us better hunters, and why hunters need to band together. We wrap up by chatting about Nate’s favorite habitat to score blacktail bucks, the three factors that contribute to his success, and Nate’s favorite blacktail deer hunting story.

Mule Deer Hunting Stories with Braxton Hamilton Show Notes:
Braxton Hamilton joins me to talk about mule deer hunting and share some stories. He’s fresh off a bear hunt, and we spend some time talking about bear hunts from the past. Braxton lives in northwestern Wyoming, where I used to go every year for the opener of mule deer. He’s been hunting for as long as he can remember. Braxton’s dad hunted just about everything when it was open, and as a kid, it was really fun. They spent a lot of time in the mountains, and he grew up seeing a lot of huge deer. Back in the 90s and 00s, there were a ton of deer out there.
When he was younger, Braxton had his heart set on killing a giant one and nothing else, and he went a whole 9 years before grabbing one! There are so many lessons in deer hunting, especially when using a bow. We chat about everything that goes into it and how important those moments are when you pull back and draw. Sometimes, it’s as simple as having that killer instinct to go after your target and getting rid of any doubts.
Braxton shares a story about how he shot a 5 x 4 deer back in 2021. He says it was the biggest learning experience he’s ever had in his hunting career. He was out with a partner, and they had been tracking the deer since 2019. We talk about how the majority of mule deer hunting is mental, and sitting in one spot for hours is a whole other grind. They played a bit of a waiting game and wound up losing track of him after shooting him with an arrow. They took a few days off and wound up finding him dead in another camp! It wasn’t a pretty scene, and they think it must have died the night he got him.
