On this episode of The Dad Central Show, we sit down with Anthony Palmer, the creator of Wake.Dad.Drink.Repeat, a podcast that challenges unfair stereotypes and discusses the experiences of fathers. Anthony shares his decision to take Fridays off during the summer to spend quality time with his kids, highlighting the positive impact it has had on his family. He acknowledges the challenges of finding a balance between family and work responsibilities but emphasizes the importance of being present in the moments with his children.

#60 Picky Eater? Anneke Hobson Says Never Do This and It Will Help To Reduce Stress
00:54:56
Welcome back to The Dad Central Show! Today, we have a very special guest joining us on the podcast. We're thrilled to have Anneke Hobson, a passionate nutritionist and dedicated parent, here to share her insights and experiences on fostering a healthy relationship with food for children.
In this episode, Anneke opens up about her own journey with food, starting from her experience observing a nanny who used forceful tactics to get children to eat, leading to problematic behaviors. This powerful experience ignited a passion within her to help parents feed their children in a more positive and nurturing way.
Anneke dives into various topics, including the benefits of meat alternatives, the importance of role modeling as parents, and the concept of repeated neutral exposure when it comes to expanding children's food preferences. She also shares the research on how significant dads are to helping kids develop healthy eating habits and the one tactic every dad uses that only makes things worse!
Another essential topic discussed was the issue of pressuring children to eat vegetables. She emphasized that this approach often leads to counterpressure and resistance, ultimately not solving picky eating behavior. Instead, she advocated for promoting a neutral and relaxed approach to food. Anneke also provides practical tips for common challenges for busy parents including eating out and traveling with healthy snacks.
This episode is filled with practical, real and positive solutions to the challenge of picky eaters, but will also challenge dads to take a more active role in helping kids develop a healthy relationship with food for the rest of their lives. You'll want to take these messages to heart and apply them to your parenting journey.
About Anneke Hobson
Anneke Hobson is a registered dietitian and has worked in public health, non-profit, and private practice settings. She became a dietitian because she loves learning and helping people improve their lives through nutrition. When she started her first nutrition degree, it felt like magic that dietitians could help people get better, and feel better, with food. It still does!
Anneke holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Nutrition from Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University) and a Master of Public Health in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Toronto.
When not working as The Kiwi RD, she runs an organization called Drawdown Dietetics, which works to integrate climate change mitigation with the practice of nutrition and dietetics.

#62 Raising Super Learners: How 10 Minutes a Day with Dad Boosts Kids Grades
00:31:53
In our latest episode Drew Soleyn and Ed Gough Jr. shed light on the challenges and opportunities fathers face when it comes to being actively engaged in their children's education. They highlight the financial stress many fathers feel while striving to provide for their families, as well as the lack of support available to enable fathers to be involved in the parenting process.
The study we reference in the episode finds that fathers have a unique role in their child's educational outcomes and that increased father involvement from an early age can positively impact a child's educational development. Spending just 10 minutes a day engaging in activities like reading, playing, singing, and drawing with our children can make a significant difference in their educational attainment.
Action steps for fathers include spending quality time with their children, reading to them before bed, and engaging in playful and educational activities regularly. We believe that education is not limited to just classroom learning, and fathers can also add to children's development when they create fun and memorable life experiences that help children develop non-academic skills too.
We also explore the importance of broader structures and systems to support fathers, such as paternity leave and employer support. Dad Central is proud to offer training to family service and early childhood education organizations on how to engage dads effectively through our evidence based program, Super Dads Super Kids. This program provides practical tools for dads to thrive and be actively involved in their children's lives.
The episode emphasizes the long-term social impacts of investing in fathers' involvement, such as improved healthcare and better career development for our children. We also discuss the division in parental involvement and stress the importance of dads building positive relationships with their children and supporting their education.
As part of our commitment to supporting fathers, we have recently launched a new fatherhood community called Dad Mentor. Dad Mentor aims to transform the fatherhood experience by providing dads with the support and guidance they need to thrive. Through this community, dads can feel in control, stay calm and patient with their children, and guide them with confidence.

#61 Why Role Models Matter During Fatherhood and How They Shape Our Children's Lives
00:33:41
In this episode, we delve deep into the importance of parental role models and their impact on our children's development.
Drew Soleyn and Ed Gough Jr. discuss the significance of being a role model for our children. They share personal stories, reflections, and insights on how our own experiences with our fathers, or the absence of a positive role model, can shape our approach to parenting.
The hosts touch on the importance of finding positive role models in our lives, whether they are biological fathers, mentors, or even inspirational figures we encounter briefly. They explore the concept that role models can show both positive and negative behaviors, and how we can learn from these experiences to become the best parents we can be.
The episode also highlights the significance of the early years (0-6 years) in setting the foundation for our children's development. By having healthy, positive, and genuine role models, we can provide the influence and guidance our children need during these crucial years.
We understand that being a dad without a positive role model can be challenging, and it can lead to self-doubt, shame, and regret. That's why we're here. Our mission at Dad Central is to support you on your dad journey, helping you avoid pitfalls and giving you the tools necessary to become the best role model for your children.

01:02:15
In this week’s episode of the Dad Central Show we provide a replay of our most popular webinar from 2021 titled How to Stay Calm, Set Limits and Get Kids to Behave.
When kids misbehave or act out, yelling can sometimes feel like a very natural reaction. Research shows that not only is yelling at kids ineffective, but it can even have detrimental long-term effects on them. Despite our best intentions, calm parenting can sometimes be a real challenge to sustain.
This webinar featured peaceful parenting expert Sarah Rosensweet and fatherhood expert Brian Russell. Ed moderates a conversation that talks about the impact of yelling, how to manage ourselves and guide children to be healthy, positive and respectful.
As the conversation evolves Brian and Sarah speak from their personal and professional perspectives, distilling important themes about shame, fear, guilt and how that impacts us and our children. As you listen, you’ll:
Learn strategies to stay calm when kids misbehave
Learn how to set positive limits for children to follow
Learn to communicate clearly with children
Get kids to listen and see them become happier
About Sarah Rosensweet
Sarah is a peaceful parenting coach and mom of 3 big kids (13, 16, and 19). Her and her husband have a great relationship with their kids. They genuinely enjoy each other’s company. They are independent, respectful, kind, funny and self-motivated.
How did they get there? Peaceful parenting.
Peaceful parenting is an approach that uses kind, firm limits with lots of empathy. We’re in charge but we give kids the support they need to meet our expectations. We emphasize connection and prioritize our relationship with our kids.
Because guess what? Our relationship is the most effective way we can influence our kids.

#78 School Refusal or Avoidance: When Your Child CAN'T Go To School & How To Manage It As a Dad
00:51:29
Parents often struggle with understanding and supporting their neurodivergent children, especially when it comes to issues like school avoidance and behavioral challenges. They want to find ways to connect with and support their children more effectively without feeling overwhelmed or confused by their behaviors.
In this episode, Ed and Drew talk through the complexities of neurodiverse families with the amazing Penny Williams, a parenting coach specializing in ADHD and autism.
Here are the top three takeaways from this enlightening conversation:
1. Embracing the Power of Yet:
- Using the word "yet" at the end of statements can create a positive and growth-oriented mindset for parents and children alike.
- It reassures that certain skills or abilities may not have developed yet, encouraging a more patient and understanding approach.
2. Creating a Collaborative Parenting Team:
- Parents should strive to be on the same page, even if their parenting styles differ.
- Staying informed about your child's activities and showing up at appointments and meetings can create a strong support system for your child.
3. Shifting Mindsets to Understand Behavior:
- It's crucial to move from a behavior-based lens to a brain-based lens when interpreting a neurodivergent child's behavior.
- Adopting a compassionate understanding and judgment-free approach is essential for effective communication and support.
This episode provides valuable insights into understanding and supporting neurodiverse families, from embracing a growth-oriented mindset to fostering collaborative parenting and shifting perspectives on behavior. Listeners will gain a deeper understanding of their children's struggles and how to support them effectively, creating a more harmonious and supportive environment at home.
We appreciate each and every one of our listeners for joining us on this journey. If you found this episode valuable, please consider sharing it with other parents who could benefit. Your feedback and support mean the world to us!

#75 Raising Confident Kids During Fatherhood: Insights from Dr. Roberto Olivardia on ADHD and Dyslexia
00:59:34
In this raw and real episode, Dr. Roberto Olivardia dives into the challenges and triumphs of raising children with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences. The struggle is real, and sometimes parents feel helpless and overwhelmed when navigating these difficult waters. It's like trying to build a bridge without the right tools.
What dads and parents want is to feel empowered, well-equipped, and supported in creating an environment where their children can thrive despite their differences. They want to know they are not alone in facing these challenges and that there is a way to support and champion their kids for who they are.
In this special episode of The Dad Central Show, hosts Ed Gough Jr. and Drew Soleyn talk with Dr. Roberto Olivardia who shares his experiences and wisdom on parenting children with neurodiversity.
Here are three big takeaways from the conversation:
Empowerment through empathy: Understanding and meeting children with ADHD and dyslexia where they are at is crucial for moving forward. Parents can lean into learning and understanding about their child's condition and provide unwavering support.
Medication and stigmatization: Medication for ADHD is a tool, not a sign of failure. It can help individuals manage their condition and is an important part of the solution for some. Parents need to understand and not stigmatize the use of medication and work with healthcare professionals to find the best approach for their child.
Celebrating differences: Dr. Olivardia shares practical strategies, such as role plays and highlighting successful individuals with similar challenges, to empower and encourage children to embrace their differences and build self-esteem beyond academic success.
This episode will provide valuable insight and understanding of how to approach and champion children with learning differences. All parents can benefit from the conversation by gaining practical strategies and heartfelt stories to connect with their kids and support them on their unique journey.

Throughout the conversation, Kevin reveals the story behind Radical Mentoring and how it all started with the founder, Regi Campbell. Now, Radical mentoring is active in over 550 churches across 42 states and 14 countries, helping leaders and churches implement effective mentoring programs through their support and resources. Kevin shares how the ministry is funded by those who have been impacted by it, allowing them to continue their vital work.
But the episode isn't just about mentorship. Kevin delves into his personal experiences as a father and how they have shaped his outlook on life. Reflecting on his own upbringing and the discovery of what brings him life, Kevin offers valuable insights into finding balance, practicing self-care, and navigating challenging relationships.

Through his own journey of forgiveness and healing, Kevin shares the impact of mentorship and the generational impact it can have.
Throughout the episode, Kevin's passion for creating a culture where fathers can embrace their true selves shines through. He encourages men to seek mentorship, to share their stories, and to be authentic and vulnerable with their loved ones. By modeling these behaviors, Kevin believes we can positively impact future generations and create stronger families.

Working through those fears and self-doubts has helped them become better dads and men. The conversation also brings up the importance of having community for support as a man and parent.
They also discuss balance, the challenges of being a black dad, the importance of having deep and meaningful conversations with your kids, and having humility and patience as a dad. The conversation ends with two powerful messages for Black Fathers:
Matt says: “Enjoy every minute of it and think about the role of being a father-figure, and how you represent yourself. We are not who the world may say we are! Be a living example of the best of black fatherhood!”
Roger says: “You have to take care of yourself first! You have to work on being a better person first – body, mind and soul! Think positive thoughts and hang around positive people. “

#13 Dr. Charles Daniels: Turning Pain into Purpose as a Father To Be The Best Dad Ever & Reduce Stress
00:53:05
Dr. Charles Daniels explores the reality of what men and fathers need to be involved in their children’s lives. Built off his foundational work in communities, he explores the importance of parenting structures and how they contribute to or create barriers for dads.
With an inside out approach Dr. Daniels and Fathers' UpLift are helping dads change the trajectory of their lives and relationships. Their organization helps dads learn how to parent themselves, deal with their inner child, and recognize the roots of their behaviour and actions. They also provide critical resources that meet the most urgent needs of black and Hispanic fathers.
Regardless of a father’s experience there are many barriers that often get in the way of allowing them to connect with their children. Fathers' UpLift learned directly from fathers how the deeper emotional issues created significant barriers…but also how deeply they longed to be involved in the lives of their children. #63 Why Mohawk Warrior Bryce Kenny Says "Yes" To Chasing Dreams as a Dad
01:02:44
Welcome back to The Dad Central Show! In today's episode, we have a special guest joining us - the talented Bryce Kenny, a professional Monster Jam driver and author. Bryce takes us on a journey through his experience as a father, sharing heartfelt insights and valuable lessons along the way.
In the conversation Bryce delves into the idea that many fathers are fatherly to others but not always to their own children. He opens up about wanting his kids to look up to him as a leader and a source of inspiration, rallying them to chase their dreams.
Bryce reveals his own struggles with imposter syndrome when he became a dad. He shares how the concept of "fake it till you make it," helped him at first, but he wanted more. He now goes by the saying, "Believe it till you become it," inspiring himself and others to believe in their dreams and the goals they want to achieve in their life and career.
Our conversation takes an interesting turn as Bryce challenges the notion of sacrificing personal dreams for the sake of parenthood. He shares a moving story about a friend who gave up his career, but Bryce counters that he wants his children to witness him pursuing his dreams and learn from the pain and growth that come with it.
Prepare to be touched as Bryce recounts a heartwarming conversation he had with his daughter, who expressed her desire for him to continue driving as Mohawk Warrior in Monster Jam. He believes that his daughter sees his growth as a father and recognizes the importance of nurturing relationships, imperfections and all.
Bryce also reflects on his relationship with his grandfather and father, who have had a significant impact on his life. He sheds light on the valuable life lessons and wisdom he learned from his late grandfather, which inspired him to write his book, "Geared for Life."
Tune in as Bryce Kenny shares his journey of discovering his purpose through Monster Jam and how it influenced his identity as a father. With a mix of inspiration, wisdom, and laughter, this episode is packed with valuable takeaways for all dads out there.
About Bryce Kenny
Growing up, Bryce’s passion was in Top Fuel dragracing, traveling the country with his grandfather competing in a race car capable of 300mph in just 4 seconds! Those miles traveled in the rig with his grandfather, Doc Sipple, would prove to be the mentorship that would equip Bryce with the passion and skill sets to fulfill his purpose – to use the platform of motorsports to change people’s lives. Bryce believes that while there are no secret formulas to life, there are gears that we must learn to shift in and out of at the right time. These gears are our foundational beliefs that guide the actions we take towards living the life we’ve always dreamed of. Gears like being driven by purpose, failing faster, and becoming built for others all require a decision in the midst of life’s toughest challenges to make that shift in order to get unstuck, find momentum, and start thriving again.
Life requires us to shift gears constantly, and Bryce is passionate about helping others find that next gear they never knew they had.
Bryce is now a Professional Monster Jam driver as the Great Clips Mohawk Warrior, setting a Guinness World Record for the fastest speed in a monster truck in 2021 and being the first driver in the sport’s history to hit 100mph. Getting his start in 2016, Kenny recorded his first Freestyle win in his first year. Kenny earned the 2019 Save of the Year and 2021 Outreach Award. The driver of the Great Clips Mohawk Warrior has also played a role in Monster Jam TV coverage. 00:48:43
You want to be the best dad you can be, but sometimes life throws curveballs that make it hard to balance career, family, and self-care.
In this episode Ed sits sat down with Kevin Baker, a teen life coach and a devoted father, for an eye-opening conversation about fatherhood, career transitions, and the importance of self-care.
Here are the top three takeaways from their discussion:
1. Manage your energy and care for your needs: It's important to remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish. In fact, it helps you to be there for others, especially your family. Moreover, self-care is essential for fathers to prioritize their physical and mental well-being in order to be the best version of themselves for their families.
2. Quality time over quantity: The conversation emphasizes the importance of quality time spent with children. It's not just about the quantity of time but about being genuinely present and engaged with your kids. Fatherhood comes first, and finding the right balance between career and family is essential.
3. Prioritize tangible targets: Kevin Baker stresses the need for setting tangible targets, both in parenting and in self-care. By defining what success looks like for your child's academic performance and behavior, you can guide your intervention strategy effectively.
This insightful episode will provide valuable understanding and practical tips for parenting teenagers and caring for yourself as a dad.

About Mark Craven
I am a dreamer. A big dreamer. And I have full faith and absolute belief that we've been given our dreams for a purpose and that purpose unfolds as we pursue our dreams.
I've worked in Higher Education for over a decade helping students achieve their academic goals. Helping them see that their lofty dreams weren't so lofty and in fact achievable.
Nothing has brought me more joy in my professional life than seeing people find their footing in an unsure and unfamiliar environment to achieve what they set out to do.
In my personal life, nothing has brought me more joy than becoming a dad. I've written several books on goal attainment and dreams but my upcoming release, "Dads, Kiss Your Sons", holds powerful messages for men to become their fullest selves, openly love their little boys, and so much more.
I was terrified to become a dad because I never had a dad and had a terrible relationship with my mom. I'm so thankful I sat through that fear long enough to come out on the other side to experience a love like I truly con't explain. I want all dads to feel that. I want all sons to have their dads with them.
Dads love to see their kids grow into confident and successful adults. The problem is most dads feel unsure how to get there and have nowhere to turn for help.

After a conversation with someone he trusted, he started the Dad Up Podcast as a way to share his passion for being a dad and help other men be the best they could be for their children.
Throughout the conversation Bryan shares valuable tips and stories from his own life, plus what he's learned from guests on his show about being a dad. He tells a painful story from his childhood and how it changed his choices as a father. He shows that when you take the time to evaluate your past experiences, you can make changes in the present that help you achieve the future you want to create.
Bryan also talks about his decision to create a personal board of directors and how that has accelerated his growth. From challenging his thinking to holding him accountable for taking action towards his goals, his example shows the power of getting mentors in your life to drive positive change.

#20 How Dads Can Overcome Separation and Divorce, To Enjoy Fatherhood
01:10:37
Today's episode is a replay of a very important webinar about helping dads overcome separation and divorce.
In a perfect world, we would all live happily ever after and parents would never split up.
In the real world, separation and divorce are common and many children do not live full-time with both biological parents. But parenting does not end after divorce or separation. We know that children of separated parents need good parenting.
We also know dads care deeply about being involved parents, but often have no support after separation. It’s one of the most difficult transitions for men, often causing increased rates of mental health and suicide.
Designed to provide tangible actions, important principles and resources, this show features two divorced dads, Marcel Parent and Robin Choe, along with Dr. John Oliffe and Louise Leonardi, Executive DIrector of the Canadian Families and Corrections Network. They distill insights that will help dads:
Find the right mindset to handle separation and divorce
Identify the most important actions their kids need from them
Work through conflict and positively co-parent or parent from a distance
Learn about caring for themselves through separation
Suggest trusted resources for support
This conversation centres around being a good father — the best one you can be in a difficult situation. It does not address the family court system, custody disputes, or legalities. We hope this show helps you navigate the transition so you can be there for your kids.
Active and involved fathers make a significant difference in the lives of their kids. Dad, they need you even when it feels impossible.

In our first episode of our third season, we've got the incredible Iris Chen! Iris gets honest about the painful struggles of her early parenting approach that repeated the patterns of her parents, but just weren't working.

From then on she began a journey of healing and shifting away from using power over her children to sharing power with them.
Now as a peaceful parenting advocate, intersectional unschooler, and certified parent coach, her hope is to encourage and support you to do the same.
