27 Apr 2023 | Sprint Saturday Explained, A Toast To Tost & FIA on the Defensive | 00:30:46
This week on News from the Nerds, host James M is back like Baku. He’s joined by Abby and Sam as they run through all the major talking points before a weekend in Azerbaijan for F1 and F2, and a maiden round for F1 Academy at the Red Bull Ring.
A toast to Tost at AlphaTauri:
News broke this week about changes within personnel at AlphaTauri, putting the rumours of the team being sold to rest. Franz Tost is stepping down at the conclusion of 2023, after being at the helm since the team was taken over from Minardi in 2005. In his place will be Ferrari Sporting Director, Laurent Mekies. Good appointment? The trio break down the changes and what it means for the team.
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/breaking-alphatauri-bring-in-new-team-principal-and-ceo/
Sprint Saturday is confirmed:
Sprint Saturday is signed, sealed and to be delivered at the six designated weekends across the rest of the 2023 season. As well as the new format there are some rules changes from the FIA regarding the Sprint Saturday format. But what do the panel make of the new format and Sprint Saturday concept?
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/f1-approves-new-sprint-weekend-format-for-baku/
FIA is back on the defensive:
The FIA has come under fire again after allegations of sexism and bullying were made against President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The trio talk about the trouble the FIA has faced this season, the statement the governing body released and their thoughts on the topic.
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/fia-release-statement-on-ben-sulayem-sexism-row/
Ferrari in transition:
Laurent Mekies is leaving the team, meaning the role of Sporting Director is available, but rumours suggest Charles Leclerc could be looking at a move to Mercedes. The panel discuss the likelihood of Leclerc joining Russell and Mercedes and what it could mean.
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/charles-leclerc-engaging-in-open-secret-talks-with-mercedes/
F1 Academy hits the track:
This weekend is the first round of the 2023 F1 Academy season in Spielberg Austria. The panel talk about the series, their hopes for it and the excitement surrounding the all-new female feeder series.

20 Sep 2023 | Who Should AlphaTauri Choose For Their 2024 Lineup? | 00:20:59
On this episode of the Cut to the Race Podcast, Oli is joined by Abby and James to discuss all things AlphaTauri.
This coming weekend is the Japanese Grand Prix, Yuki Tsunoda's home race, but will he be remaining at AlphaTauri - that is the question.
The panel discuss the history of AlphaTauri and all the rumours surrounding Red Bull's sister team. With a name change set to take place for 2024, the trio discuss the potential options for the team's new name, some of which are rather peculiar for an F1 team. They then go on to discuss the drivers as this year there have been four racing for AlphaTauri. With Nyck de Vries out of the seat, the options for 2024 look to be either Tsunoda, Daniel Ricciardo or Liam Lawson.
But who will AlphaTauri choose? Oli, Abby and James debate which drivers they think are worthy of the AlphaTauri seat and which ones they think the team will choose to be on the grid in 2024.

31 Oct 2022 | Round 20 - The F1 Mexico City Grand Prix Review 2022 | 01:21:02
On this week’s Cut to the Race Podcast, Oli is joined by Abby, James and Sam for their review of the Mexico City Grand Prix.
Formula 1 headed to Mexico with both championships settled, but there is still plenty to play for elsewhere. Sergio Pérez and Charles Leclerc still locked in a close battle for second in the championship - with the former also hoping for a first-ever win on home soil - whilst Max Verstappen was looking for a record-breaking 14th victory of the season.
The panel discuss the news that broke over the weekend, including Christian Horner and Red Bull's response to their penalty for breaching the cost cap and the team's boycott of Sky Sports, before taking on Oli's 'Confusing F1 Quiz', which featured some out-of-order questions and more driver-name switching to break Sam's brain.
And then it was back to the track for the quartet. With Mercedes having shown some legitimate pace in the thin air of Mexico City and Ferrari having gradually lost their way, it would prove to be a 2021-esque battle between Red Bull and Mercedes.
Did the former Constructors' Champions make the wrong decision on strategy? Was there a way for anyone to beat Verstappen? Where did the Daniel Ricciardo of old suddenly reappear from? And, of course, what were the panel's weekend ratings and who were their drivers of the day?

Our race review panel covers:
Daniel Ricciardo leaving McLaren, and what the Australian's next move will be. We dive into Ricciardo's video announcing the news on social media and what impact this will have on him as well as F1's driver market.
As the drama surrounding Oscar Piastri nears its conclusion, we cover where we think he's going and when we may finally find out as the Contract Recognition Board meets to discuss the reigning F2 champion's future.
Grid penalties galore: How 7 drivers taking grid penalties ensured exciting and chaotic opening laps, complete with two World Champions colliding. One would continue, and the other quite literally flew out of the race. Just how harsh were the media exchanges afterwards?
Our usual anthem review. Is the Belgian Grand Prix's anthem performance be a hit or one to forget?
Max Verstappen's imperious form and how he and Red Bull turned a P15 start into a dominant victory. Teammate Perez also comes under scrutiny as the Mexican struggles to keep in touch with the championship leader.
Ferrari's unfortunate race, and yet another faux pas for the legendary Italian team. We talk strategists' strategies for talking to racing drivers, and the logic of the prancing horse decisions after another race to forget.
Mercedes and George Russell pressuring Ferrari for P2 in the Constructors Championship. Can Mercedes recover its season to finish "best of the rest" behind the dominant Red Bull?
The strong performances of Alpine, Williams and Aston Martin. All 3 teams came away with a good points haul. The same could not be said for McLaren, we analyse how this race affects the Constructors Championship as F1 2022 moves into its second half.

06 Jun 2023 | The Spanish Grand Prix Review 2023 | 01:05:57
This week on the Cut to the Race podcast, it’s time for the Spanish Grand Prix race review.
Abby and Sam co-host and co-panel as Oli and James M play hooky; one for an exciting major life event, the other for an unBEElievable reason.
One of the better Spanish Grands Prix in recent memory, returning to the old layout appears to have revitalised the event. The duo of Sam and Abby discuss the track changes and what that means for overtaking and race strategy.
Also, heading into the weekend, Ferrari fell in line with their sidepod concept, Mercedes continues to play it coy and Guenther Steiner brought the funny side out of the stewards.
The panel run through practice and a qualifying that yielded some unusual results, before dissecting a race that was far more interesting than it might have first appeared.
It was an excellent day for Mercedes, whilst Aston Martin flailed and Ferrari faltered. Verstappen was typically in imperious form, but couldn’t escape the disapproval of his team.

19 Apr 2023 | Sainz Appeal REJECTED, Hamilton to Stay at Mercedes & Classic F1 Tracks under Threat | 00:47:50
This week on News from the Nerds, host James takes a well-deserved break. Sam deputises in his place with Abby and Cut to the Race host Oli joining him.
We’re into week three of the F1 spring break and whilst news is slightly slower than usual, the panel wouldn’t have you believe that. Up for discussion this week is:
Ferrari’s protest dismissed and ‘stick by us’ says Carlos Sainz
The verdict is in on the Australian Grand Prix penalty appeal, and it’s not good news for Ferrari. The panel take a look and discuss whether the FIA were right in their decision.
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/breaking-news-the-fia-deny-ferraris-australian-grand-prix-protest/
To make matters worse at Maranello, the Italian team have come under intense scrutiny for their less than impressive start to the season. Carlos Sainz has hit back at some of the criticism, but is that the right approach?
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/f1latestnews/sainz-were-the-ones-who-arent-happy-as-he-calls-on-the-tifosi-to-stick-by-them/
Audi continue to make strides into F1
The German manufacturer is set to join the F1 grid in 2026. In the meantime, they’ve been working behind the scenes to get everything in place. It’s a project that will be close to four years old by the time it hits the track, so how do the panel reckon they’re do come 2026?
https://t.co/OUSkKcoCOm
Hamilton dismisses rumours
Will he, won’t he? The Lewis Hamilton retirement rumours have been around since the end of the 2021 season, but now they have to coexist with suggestions that he won’t end his career with Mercedes. Is there anything to those whispers? Not according to the man himself, but are the panel buying what he’s selling?
https://t.co/kztrTuHtw6
Historic tracks to leave the calendar?
F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has said that historic tracks don’t have a guaranteed place on the F1 calendar. Bold words, but evidently from a place of commercial interest. Is that negatively impacting F1, and should certain venues have a protected status?
In a year which could see Spa fall from the calendar, what does our trio think about the direction F1 is headed in?
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/domenicali-historic-f1-tracks-dont-have-guaranteed-future/
Domination ruining the ‘spectacle’?
Finally, and sticking with Domenicali, much has been made of Red Bull’s dominant start to the 2023 season. Is it a natural by-product of the sport or is domination getting worse? Some are fans of it, some hate it, but whatever your view, the panel break down a nuanced and multi-faceted debate.

30 Aug 2023 | Are Red Bull Getting Ready to Replace Sergio Perez? | 00:27:32
Sergio Perez has had a mixed season so far in 2023, with some strong performances but also some costly mistakes. This has led to speculation that Red Bull could be looking to replace him at the end of the year.
In this episode of the Cut to the Race Podcast, Oli, Sam, James and Abby discuss the rumours surrounding Perez’s future at Red Bull. We’ll explore the reasons why Red Bull might be considering a change, and we’ll also look at the potential replacements for Perez. Sergio Perez has had a mixed season so far in 2023, with some strong performances early on, but also some costly mistakes in the months since - particularly in qualifying. This has led to speculation that Red Bull could be looking to replace him at the end of the year, despite some strong recovery drives on Sundays.
In this episode of the Cut to the Race Podcast, Oli, Sam, James and Abby discuss the rumours surrounding Perez’s future at Red Bull. We’ll explore the reasons why Red Bull might be considering a change, and we’ll also look at the potential replacements for Perez.
The Mexican is contracted to Red Bull for 2024, but a lot can change between now and pre-season testing in February. Red Bull have proven themselves to be ruthless with driver changes, even when a contract is in place, so how much do we - and should Sergio Perez - trust the Milton Keynes-based team?
Everyone’s favourite Australian, Daniel Ricciardo, is firmly back in the mix, but will his injury scupper his plans of taking back what was once his?
Liam Lawson, the beneficiary of Ricciardo’s injury, could further muddy the waters at Red Bull and AlphaTauri - will he provide Perez cause for concern?
There are many questions to answer, and many factors to consider. One thing, however, is for certain: it’s not going to be straightforward.

In this week's Cut to the Race Podcast, Oli is joined by Abby and James to debate whether Max Verstappen and Red Bull are providing the most dominant era in Formula 1.
Max Verstappen's dominance this season, which has seen him win 10 consecutive races, making history, has been called into question a lot in 2023 as many have said it is boring, including Liberty Media. 29 Jan 2023 | Matt Grant - F1 Engine Designer | 01:05:31
This week Oli and James P are joined by a special guest: Cosworth engine designer Matt Grant. Listen to an F1 nerd's dream as Matt reveals the secrets of Cosworth V10 and V8 engines from the late 1990s to 2013.
We ask Matt about designing a V10 and V8 engine, how they compare to today's immensely complex power units, and how an engine made its way into a car after a team had agreed to use Cosworth V10/V8
We hear about Matt's first two seasons in 1997 and 1998. After a successful first season and tricky times in 1998, Cosworth jumped back to the front of the grid in 1999 with Johnny Herbert’s famous win for Stewart at the Nurburgring.
We find out Matt's thoughts on Ford buying Cosworth and works team Stewart in 1999, and how this affected Cosworth going into 2000. How did Cosworth interact with such a huge manufacturer?
Matt gives us details on how the engine developed under the Jaguar name, and his thoughts on the blockbuster buyout from Red Bull after Ford sold Cosworth and Stewart in 2004.
We get an insight into what happens when an F1 team fails: Arrows were a customer in 2002, but sadly went under midway through the season.
With F1's "new teams" arriving in 2010, we hear about Cosworth's involvement as an engine supplier to all three teams. We get the details of h the final few weeks of the team's existence.
Listen in Matt tells about his venture Modatek, and how it came about. We hear how these classic bespoke Cosworth engines are maintained, as well as his all-time favourite Cosworth engine and car combination.
For extra nerdy goodness, here are some Cosworth V10 facts from Matt!
Cosworth TJ V10 stats:
Max power = 900 bhp, which equates to 300 hp/litre – the DFV only created 140 hp/litre when it first ran.
Max speed = 19,000 rpm, which means that the piston moves up and down 300 times per second, which is 30 times in the blink of an eye.
At this speed the piston goes from zero to over 60 mph and back to zero in a distance of just 44 mm, with only the two big end bolts stopping it from escaping.
To keep the piston in the engine, the con rod bolts have to withstand a 3,000 kg load, which is more than the weight of a Range Rover, and the bolt thread is only 9mm.

Ferrari appear to have returned to form – at least in qualifying, and on Charles Leclerc’s side of the garage…
What do the quad make of the sunshine and rainbows at Aston Martin? Are they legitimate, and have the team turned it around in the popularity stakes?
Lastly, the panel pull apart the scary and unacceptable pit lane incident involving Esteban Ocon and a gaggle of photographers. Are the FIA taking it seriously enough, and is what happened symptomatic of a distracted organisation?

One of the most talked about potential 2023 moves fell through at the end of last week, with Red Bull announcing the end of their interest in Indycar star Colton Herta. Welcome to News from the Nerds – your midweek F1 digest brought to you by the FormulaNerds. On this week’s show Sam, Catherine and James discuss:
Zak Brown’s strong words...
Zak Brown sent a letter to the FIA and F1, formally saying how Red Bull cannot get out of the cost cap breach with just a fine penalty. Harsher action needs to be taken and he also proposes his own suggestion to the motorsport board.
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/f1latestnews/zak-brown-writes-to-fia-stating-red-bull-budget-breach-constitutes-cheating/
Is it Schumacher’s time to shine?
Mick Schumacher is yet to find himself a seat for 2023. The German has caused some financial headaches for Guenther Steiner and Haas, who have looked at several drivers who could replace Schumacher. However, Gene Haas said that it is Mick’s decision to see what he wants for the future. Will Schumacher stay on with Haas, or will we see someone else in the American seat?

https://www.formulanerds.com/news/steiner-schumacher-has-home-advantage-as-new-contender-emerges-at-haas-f1/
Pierre Gasly has finally made the right move?
Pierre Gasly is finally out of the Red Bull system and can look ahead to a new chapter with Alpine. The trio discussed how once he left the Red Bull seat, F1 saw a new Pierre Gasly, especially in 2020 with his first win coming in Monza. What lies ahead for the French?
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/pierre-gasly-it-was-the-right-time-to-leave-red-bull/
Another race in Saudi Arabia? And more sprint races?
Saudi Arabia confirmed that they can host more F1 races. What does the trio make of this decision? Do we love this fast-paced circuit, or do we rather see it off the calendar? Also, there are set to be six sprint races, making the total number of races in a season 30 rather than just 24. Is this better than just increasing the number of Grands Prix per season, or will it prove to be too much to handle in a single weekend?
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/steiner-more-sprint-races-better-than-expanding-the-f1-calendar/
Should F1 implement 'information' laps?
After the delays in Singapore and Japan, the chairman of the Grand Prix Drivers Association Alex Wurz suggested that F1 implement information laps. Cars will run out on the track 10 minutes before to give feedback on the track conditions and see how it is best to proceed. This comes after Lewis Hamilton’s comments who told his team that he can give better feedback if he is out on track for one minute rather than watching from a TV.

23 Mar 2023 | Unhappiness at the front, an open door for Aston Martin & new F1 tyre suppliers. | 00:36:15
This week on News from the Nerds, the host with the most, James M, is back in action after missing the race review for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Joined by Abby and Sam, the panel dissect the fallout from that race and discuss the rest of the news circling the world of Formula 1. On the docket is:
Unhappiness at the front?
F1’s big three each have their own issues to solve. Ferrari were off the pace in Jeddah, but how, why, and what can they do to arrest their slide? Red Bull reigned dominant again to no surprise, but it isn’t all sunshine in paradise; a storm is brewing. Mercedes continues to be off their A game, but is their B game as bad as they say and what will the coming months offer as they look to regain what once was theirs?

https://www.formulanerds.com/features/can-sergio-perez-emulate-nico-rosbergs-2016-season-in-2023/
An open door for Aston Martin?
So focused on Red Bull ahead, Mercedes and Ferrari appear to have let Aston Martin in through the back door. After his will he-won’t he podium finish, Fernando Alonso has staked his teams’ claim as the second quickest in F1. The two-time champ has also fought back at Red Bull and Mercedes for taking credit for Aston Martin’s success.

Tender open for tyre supplier
The sole rubber supplier to F1 since 2011, Pirelli are up for re-election, if they chose to run. The official tender period has opened to decide the new tyre supplier of F1 from 2025 to potentially 2028. Do Pirelli deserve a new contract, have they done enough? And who else might be in with a shout?
https://twitter.com/Formula_Nerds/status/1637921974348390403?s=20
Alpine call for changes
After ex-driver Fernando Alonso was penalised for the same grid box infringement current driver Esteban Ocon was found guilty of in Bahrain, Alpine have called for a re-think of the rules that given start line procedure. Do they have a point, or is their view a little left field?
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/alpine-calls-for-rethink-over-f1-grid-box-rules/10446813/
Lineup completed for F1 Academy
The inaugural F1 Academy season is a matter of weeks away and the grid is now complete. Former W-Series racer Marta Garcia is joining support paddock titans PREMA. With all 15 seats now filled, we look forward to the maiden voyage in Austria.

11 Dec 2022 | 2022 F1 Season Review & Quiz - Part 2 | 01:23:49
On this week’s Cut to the Race, Oli is joined by Abby, James and Sam to discuss the top three teams of the 2022 season for part two of the season review. On this show:
The Nerds Quiz!
Oli provides another quiz for the Nerds focusing on 2022 to test their knowledge of the latest season. How will they do? Can you beat the Nerds?
An uphill battle for Mercedes:
2022 wasn’t quite what Mercedes would have wanted with a car that was less than perfect. For the Silver Arrows there were many obstacles in the way but they finished on a high in the final races. The quartet talk about Mercedes’ challenging season and the promise of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.
A championship fall for Ferrari:
Ferrari’s season started strong with a place in the championship but it soon went downhill after some blunders, retirements and bad luck. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz had varying seasons with highs and lows. The panel dissect exactly what went wrong for the Scuderia.
A double victory for Red Bull:
Red Bull won both championships this year but it wasn’t without its challenges. A double DNF in Bahrain proved futile in hindering Red Bull’s progress and they dominated the season. They had some blunders with the cost cap and team orders but they fought their way to victory. The panel discuss Red Bull’s double victory, the clear difference in Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez.

28 Nov 2022 | 2022 F1 Season Review & Quiz - Part 1 | 01:17:52
This week on the Cut to the Race Podcast, host Oli and his panel of Abby, Sam and James M tackle the first half of the 2022 season review.
In this episode, it’s the bottom seven teams from Constructors’ Championship and their drivers. Who exceeded expectations, who failed to deliver, and what can we expect from their respective 2023s?
Quiz ’22
This week’s quiz is all things 2022. How closely was the panel paying attention this season, as they try to count everything from drivers to retirements and list the calendar in order?
The battle for P4
An intense fight between the two was somewhat overshadowed by internal dysfunction. McLaren started terribly, but quickly recovered. Well, half their line-up did, at least… Alpine were quick from the get-go, but were plagued by poor reliability. Well, half their line-up was, at least… Personnel changes for next season will see shifts in team dynamic, but will they continue their fight for best of the rest?
A tale of two teams
Alfa Romeo and Aston Martin had divergent seasons yet converged at 55 points apiece. Alfa took a step forward, whilst Aston took a step back.
Valtteri Bottas was a revelation Alfa, but how did his rookie teammate fare? A surprisingly slow start for Aston made way for a resurgent Sebastian Vettel, who provided his own summer surprise.
Did Haas flatter to deceive?
After an abysmal 2021 season, the only way was up for Haas. With Nikita Mazepin sacked during the off-season, Kevin Magnussen shocked and delighted in equal measure with P5 on his return to F1 at the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix.
Exciting early season form eventually tailed off, but Mick Schumacher remained costly for the team. KMAG dovetailed the campaign with feel good performances, whilst Schumacher peaked mid-year. That wasn’t enough to save him, as Magnussen’s old foe replaces Mick for 2023.
Falls from grace
Perhaps the teams most disappointed with 2022 will be AlphaTauri and Williams – though admittedly, that’s to be expected as they finished P9 and P10.
AlphaTauri ran Haas close, but Pierre Gasly was unable to extract as much from the car as he did in previous years. Yuki Tsunoda took a step forward, or so it seemed, but struggled after securing his future for 2023, when Gasly will enjoy pastures new. Can his replacement, Nyck de Vries, deliver on the promise of his Monza cameo?
Williams might have provided that opportunity to De Vries, but it’s Logan Sargeant who has benefitted from a changing of the guard there. He replaces Nicholas Latifi, whose season never really got going. He partners Alex Albon, who was a bright spot in an otherwise frustrating season that saw Williams fall back to the foot of the standings.

11 Jan 2023 | F1 News From the Nerds - A New Team Entering F1? | 00:41:48
The FormulaNerds Team return for a special episode of News from the Nerds to discuss a potential 11th team joining the sport. James M is joined by Sam and James P to cover and discuss the ongoing story:
The row over Andretti’s F1 entry continues to rumble on. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has now thrown his support behind the bid in a public intervention.
Andretti’s bid to enter F1 has been met with pessimism by the teams for the last two seasons. Owner Michael Andretti has taken a new approach to turn the tide of opinion. After the FIA announced it would investigate new teams to join F1, Andretti announced its intentions to tie up with General Motors and Cadillac to enhance its chances.
No public concerns were raised by F1 at the announcement, however, President Ben Sulayems’s recent tweet condemning supposed negative reaction indicates F1 is still wary of Andretti’s entry. The FIA President has become the most vocal support for Andretti as it chases a place on the grid.
Speaking during a press conference at the Dakar Rally, Autosport quotes the FIA president as stating that new team entries form part of the “sustainability of the sport”. He added that up to 12 teams can be on the grid in the future: “Today there are two sides of sustainability. There is sustainability of the environment, and there is sustainability of the sport. If you want to sustain the sport, you have to open it to the rest of the manufacturers. And to us, we are allowed to have 12 teams on the grid”.
Showing further support, Ben Sulayem highlighted General Motors’s position as an engine manufacturer, stating “we should be encouraging them to come to Formula 1”. He added that he “needs a reason why” the sport would not welcome Andretti or General Motors.

This week, Oli is joined by Abby and Catherine to discuss the potentially last French Grand Prix.
The trio discuss Ferrari, who looked to have a strong weekend but was all ruined by Charles Leclerc’s crash. They discuss who was truly at fault, Mattia Binotto’s team or the 24-year-old’s? They also point out the strategists’ confusion which caused Carlos Sainz a podium finish after he made a spectacular comeback from the back of the grid.
They go on to compare the Lewis vs Max rivalry to that compared to Max vs Charles this year. Mercedes are not at the top of their game but they seem to be turning up the heat on Ferrari and Red Bull, especially after a double podium finish thanks to Lewis Hamilton and George Russell with a slight push from Toto Wolff.
Finally, what happened to Sergio Perez this weekend, was the team to blame for his finishing position? And how about Daniel Ricciardo? Is he demanding too much from McLaren, who seem to have been working just fine with youngster Lando Norris?

06 Oct 2022 | F1 News From The Nerds - Budget Cap Breaches, Hamilton says the FIA have 'Failed', Is it the END of W-Series? | 00:33:22
Welcome to News from the Nerds – your midweek news show brought to you by the FormulaNerds.
On this week’s show, James M, James P, Abby and Sam discuss:
The 2021 Budget Cap alleged breaches:
· Will 2021 ever end? Two teams are rumoured to have surpassed the budget cap last season, with potential championship implications. What do we know, and what do we think will come out of it?
Silly season HAAS to be over soon:
· It looks like we know who is going to AlphaTauri, depending on whether Alpine get their man, which should decide Williams’s choice. But Haas are somewhat separate in this. Will they stick with the devil they know, will they turn to an old hand, or will they dip into a different talent pool?
Alonso being Alonso:
· The fiery Spaniard was less than impressed with a potentially detrimental double-DNF for Alpine in Singapore. Do they panel agree with him, or are these merely the grumblings of a disgruntled outgoing employee? And is their reliability a concern in their P4 showdown with McLaren?
Hamilton says the FIA has ‘failed’:
· Have the new regulations achieved what they set out to do, and will the cost cap hold any gaps in performance steady throughout the latest era of F1? The panel take a look at Hamilton’s comments and weight up the situation – is he right, is it too early to tell, and is he a hypocrite?
The future of W Series:
· The women-only championship is in financial turmoil. Will it survive the season, and could more be done to safeguard its future? Headline name Jamie Chadwick had a weekend to forget in Singapore, as she threw away the chance to wrap up the 2022 title – but will that prove costly?

15 Oct 2023 | Lando Norris Vs Oscar Piastri | 00:27:51
This week the trio of James, Sam and Abby discuss all things Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. With the spec’d-up MCL60, the McLaren duo are quickly developing into the envy of the F1 paddock.
Norris has been consistently one of the standouts on the grid for a while now, and Piastri is going from strength to strength in his rookie season. With the latter taking his first race victory – grand prix win still pending – in Qatar, Norris had to play second fiddle to a teammate yet again.
Norris has had the measure of Piastri all season up to the weekend in Lusail, so there’s no need to panic just yet, but with an increasingly strong and evenly-matched line-up comes debate.
Who is better, who will take a grand prix victory first, who will lead the team in the future, and who might be McLaren’s next F1 drivers’ champ?
Many questions arise. Join our trio as they give their take on the pair and what the future holds in store for them both.

11 May 2023 | Breaking Down the Alpine Crisis, the Potential Aston Martin Honda Collaboration & More | 00:38:43
This week on News from the Nerds, the usual trio of James M, Sam and Abby digest all the biggest headlines following the second running of the polarising Miami Grand Prix, including Laurent Rossi’s explosive comments about his Alpine team. In this week’s show, we cover:
Aston Martin Honda?
F1 is heading towards a new era of engine regulations in 2026 and currently, six prospective power unit manufacturers have signed up. All but one has a works deal in place already – Honda. The Japanese car giant has found recent success with Red Bull, but it will need to find a new home come the end of 2025. Where might they land? An early front-runner has emerged…
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/honda-looking-increasingly-likely-to-stay-in-f1-but-who-with/
Crisis at Alpine
It’s been a disappointing start to the F1 season for the team based at Enstone – hoping to solidify last year’s P4 in the Constructors’ Championship and take the fight to the top three, Alpine have found themselves slipping back – and being usurped altogether by the upstart Aston Martin team. What does Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi have to say about it? It certainly doesn’t make for pretty listening

https://www.formulanerds.com/news/szafnauer-alpine-have-gained-on-some-rivals-from-last-season/
A false re-start for Mercedes?
How do you solve a problem like… Mercedes’ no-pod approach? The former champs have seemingly been stuck in a holding pattern since the start of last season. Can they get out of it, and to what cost? Only time will tell, but it’s a game of try and try again for the Brackley-based outfit
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/hamilton-mercedes-upgrade-will-take-steps-forward/
Red Bull dominating – but boring?
The talking point to beat all talking points this season – is Red Bull’s excellence ruining the show? Our panel has their say after comments from Martin Brundle and others
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/f1latestnews/perez-we-simply-didnt-have-the-pace-compared-to-verstappen-at-the-miami-gp/
F1 intros here to stay?
What is it they say about Marmite? The ‘Americanised’ build up to the Miami Grand Prix rubbed some up the wrong way, but might they have to get used to it elsewhere on the F1 calendar too? It’s starting to look that way. Following on from the Miami Race Review show, the trio analyse the merits and demerits of an F1 leaning ever more into “the show”

14 Nov 2022 | Round 21 - The F1 São Paulo Grand Prix Review 2022 | 01:46:05
This week on the Cut to the Race podcast, Host Oli is joined by James M, Abby and Sam as the quartet dissect the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, held at the legendary Interlagos in Brazil + Oli plays quizmaster again as he tests the knowledge of the group. Will the trio fare as well as in previous weeks, or will they come up short this time?
Arguably the race weekend of the season, each meaningful session provided action and surprises. From first-time pole-sitters to first time winners, there is simply no predicting what Interlagos might offer.
Together, the panel discuss those highlights and major talking points. The action and subsequent surprises were helped with a sizeable side of drama, which will no doubt dominate headlines over the coming days and weeks.
The third and final sprint weekend of the 2022 season, the festivities in Brazil were the best advert for the format that F1 has seen thus far.
First, it produced the qualifying session of the year and perhaps the most popular pole position in recent memory. Changeable weather conditions caused chaos and confusion at Ferrari, George Russell set up his weekend perfectly by accident, and Haas acted quickly when it mattered most.
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/a-red-flag-and-surprise-pole-position-in-the-sao-paulo-qualifying/
Then, tensions ran high between teammates at both Alpine and Aston Martin in the sprint, with penalties applied to guilty parties. Verstappen fell back whilst Hamilton surged through, and there was no shortage of quality wheel-to-wheel racing, and there was a small sign of things to come at Red Bull.
https://www.formulanerds.com/news/sao-paulo-grand-prix-sprint-race-results/
The grand prix saw safety cars, diverging strategies and the Mercedes duo confirming their apparent renaissance. There was action throughout and drama aplenty. Verstappen and Hamilton came to blows again, Alpine grabbed the initiative in their battle with McLaren and fractures are starting to show at Red Bull. But the question is, how serious could the implications be?
