It’s been another week full of twists and turns in the Alex Murdaugh story. If there’s one thing we’ve all learned over the past two weeks it’s that South Carolina’s justice system is nowhere near fixed. Far too often, it seems like those in positions of power are choosing to do what’s good for them individually over what’s good for public safety. This is a theme that we noticed long before the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh and it’s a topic we will continue to tackle as we look to shine massive amounts of light into the darkest corners of this country, right where crime and corruption meet. So much drama has happened since we last talked. The state Supreme Court ordered Jeroid Price back to prison. Predictably, the “Godfather” of the Bloods gang in South Carolina failed to turn himself in after the state Supreme Court ordered him back to prison last week and remains on the run. This week, Mandy, Liz, & Eric and I discuss the latest in the Jeroid Price case and how — no matter how many times we point it out — the state’s justice system keeps on showing us just how little it thinks of victims. Even from prison, convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh manages to further traumatize his victims. This time it’s the Satterfield family. On today’s episode of Cup of Justice we talk about one of the most upsetting things to have happened since Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life in March. Murdaugh Murders Podcast co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell — and everyone’s favorite attorney Eric Bland — discuss Murdaugh’s admission that he lied about how Gloria Satterfield died and what that means, and what it DOESN’T mean, for the case. They also delve into male egotism, prison romance and why Jim Griffin and Dick Harpootlian might still be slumming it. Last week, Alex filed a response to the federal case that was filed against him by one of the two insurance companies in the settlement that was supposed to go to the Satterfield family — which totalled $4.3 million. In that filing he admitted to lying about the dogs tripping Gloria. The fallout from that was the suggestion that the Satterfield family might have to pay back the money they received as a result of Alex’s admitted legal malpractice and the alleged legal malpractice of the family’s attorney at the time, Alex’s best friend Cory Fleming. In other words, the solution to Alex’s admitted crime — in his and his supporters’ eyes — is for Nautilus to go after the family who was swindled by him. Because our co-host Eric Bland and his partner Ronnie Richter are the ones who helped the Satterfield family be made whole, you better believe Eric was fired up in this episode. Former attorney Cory Fleming will serve 46 months in federal prison and pay $102,221 in restitution for his involvement in the scheme to steal millions from the Satterfield family. Moments after Judge Richard Gergel announced his sentence on August 15, Fleming voluntarily surrendered and was escorted out of the U.S. District Court in Charleston by U.S. Marshals. He requested to serve his time at FCI Jesup–a medium security prison in Georgia. It has not been decided where he will be sent. Our mission is to get Stephen Smith's case to a place of solvability, but day to day, our goals are much smaller and much more focused on the tiniest of details. As Eric puts it, Liz and Mandy are pulling at the edges of this case in the hopes of finding more dots that can be connected by law enforcement. And so far it’s working. So far we’re finding new details and when you don’t have answers, every detail matters.  That’s why it’s so important that law enforcement continues to throw every resource they can at Stephen's case right now. Yes, there are a ton of other cases out that deserve the attention of SLED and the AG’s office, but Stephen’s case is not only about finding out who killed him … it’s about a system that needs to redeem itself... for the victims and to the public.  Also on the show today, we talk about a decision by the Connecticut Supreme Court that is long overdue. The decision sets a new standard for the release of police records — specifically the case files from crimes that are technically still open because they haven’t been solved. Right after we got back from Alex’s federal sentencing, Cup of Justice co-hosts Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell broke down observations from the courtroom. During the trial, she collected all the facts about the night Alex killed Maggie and Paul and organized them into an amazing spreadsheet, showing that the defense’s claims about Alex’s whereabouts and actions didn’t add up when compared to what the GPS and phone data were telling us. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell sit down with Amanda Knox to talk about true crime, journalism, media ethics and finding clarity in a world where facts aren’t enough to persuade someone of the truth. In 2007, Seattle resident Amanda Knox was a 20-year-old studying abroad in Perugia, Italy, when the worst happened: A man broke into the apartment she shared with three other women and brutally raped and murdered her roommate: British student Meredith Kercher. The town’s unscrupulous police agency immediately — and wrongly — put all their energy into making Amanda into a suspect no matter how many times the evidence told them otherwise. To make matters worse, they colluded with a tabloid reporter to paint Amanda out to be a “femme fatale” and fed the reporter made-up stories about what happened the night of Meredith’s murder. And the public was only too happy to take part in the resulting frenzy that was almost entirely born out of these men’s sexual fantasies about Amanda. Though she’s since been acquitted on appeal and completely exonerated by Italy’s high court, Amanda continues to grapple with backlash from those who have trouble accepting her innocence. But her focus isn’t on them. It’s on finding clarity amid the chaos and the injustice. Amanda, who is now a journalist, hosts the “Labyrinths” podcast with her husband, author and poet Chris Robinson.
