Culturvator Conversations (Nadine AbdelGhaffar)

Bobby Chinn is an international chef, television presenter, restaurateur. He was born in New Zealand, half Egyptian half Chinese. He got his BA in Finance & Economics in England. He worked in many jobs until he found his love and talent for cooking then he became a culinary celebrity across Asia and the Middle East , a host of Discovery TLC's "World Cafe", and now, as a judge on MBC's "Top Chef Middle East". He opened two award-winning restaurants in Vietnam – "Restaurant Bobby Chinn" in Hanoi (2001) and "Bobby Chinn Saigon" in Ho Chi Minh (2011), then relocated to London in 2014 and opened "The House of Ho" Vietnamese restaurant.

Rose Issa is a curator, writer and producer who has championed visual art and film from the Middle East for more than 30 years. She has lived in London since the 1980s, showcasing upcoming and established artists and producing exhibitions and film festivals worldwide. As well as holding exhibitions at Rose Issa Projects in London, she is also the founder of the publishing units Rose Issa Projects and Beyond Art Production, where she has published almost 30 catalogues and monographs, including the most recent Signs of Our Times: From Calligraphy to Calligraffiti (Merrell Publishing, 2016) and Ourouba, The Eye of Lebanon (BeirutArtFair,2017)

Rasha was a student of Islamic/ African history, she entered the media field as a TV presenter as She belongs to a big media family, her mother is Samia Al-Etribi and her aunt is Suhair Al-Etribi. Then went to designing, she is the designer of " Asfour El Nil". She aims to recreate the concept of “ patrons of the art” , where clients again commission artisans to create relevant beautiful pieces. Only then will these crafts re-inherit their raison d’être and not be reduced to bazaar bought souvenirs for the occasional tourist.

Mohamed Banawy graduated with B.sc. from faculty of Fine Arts - Helwan University in Cairo in 2000 and M.A in the relation between pharonic and African American mural painting in 2009 , then a pH.d. in art philosophy 2015. He has taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts since 2000.  Banawy has devoted much time to human rights issues since 2000. He has participated in numerous exhibitions , biennales and events in Egypt and abroad (Rome- Venice- London –New york- Ravenna- Spain- Saudi arabia ) and received several awards for his work which is now represented in private , national and international collections, one of his works was published as a model of contemporary mosaic art in the Artemondo

Based in Minnesota, she enjoys tennis and lives with her dog Coco.

Peter Der Manuelian is Barbara Bell Professor of Egyptology at Harvard University, and director of the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East. His Giza Project at Harvard presents online past, present, and future archaeological activity at the Giza Pyramids. His interests include visualization and digital humanities approaches to the ancient world. Publications include Digital Giza. Visualizing the Pyramids; Mastabas of Nucleus Cemetery G 2100; Slab Stelae of the Giza Necropolis; Living in the Past: Studies in Archaism of the Egyptian Twenty-sixth Dynasty; and Studies in the Reign of Amenophis II. He has also written several childrens’ books.

Fatma took her first singing class when she was fourteen with Soprano Neveen Allouba, she took her from Cairo to the hallowed boards of Milan’s Teatro alla Scala and selection as one of BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists in 2016. She became an exclusive Warner Recording Artist in 2019 and her debut studio album, El Nour, was released in October 2020. After receiving her Bachelor of Music from the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin in 2013, Fatma was awarded a scholarship to study at the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan, becoming the first Egyptian soprano to perform on that iconic stage. She represented Egypt on Human Right’s Day in 2014 and 2018 at the United Nations in Geneva and in 2017 at the Luxor Temple and sang for children's right to education and dignity through music. In 2016, she received an honorary award from Egypt’s National Council for Women. Later in the same year she became the first Egyptian opera singer ever to be awarded the state’s Creativity Award, one of Egypt’s highest accolades, for her outstanding artistic achievement on an international level. In the past years she has won several major singing competitions including the 8th Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition (Dublin, 2016), the 7th Leyla Gencer International Opera Competition (Istanbul, 2012), 2nd prize at the 16th International Robert Schumann Lied Competition (Zwickau, 2012) and the Grand Prix at the 1st Giulio Perotti International Opera Competition (Germany, 2011)

Watson was born in Canada , he is an independent curator, art advisor and cultural event marketing specialist in New York, has discovered art stars and brought them to the attention of new audiences. His area of curatorial expertise is in spotting emerging visual artists with outstanding potential, many of whom are now seen internationally in the blue chip category. Watson has advised several art collecting programs in institutional settings and for private residences, as well as assisted more than a hundred major brands in creating unique outreach programs to new audiences. Also, He has delivered hundreds of lectures on contemporary art to museum trustees and business groups, as well as for art school audiences.

Zeinab Alhashemi is an Emirati conceptual artist based in Dubai. Since graduating from Zayed University with a BA in arts and science specialising in multimedia design, she has become known for her large-scale contemporary site-specific installations. Alhashemi is fascinated with capturing the transformation of the UAE and examines the contrast and interdependence between the abstract, geometric shapes of urbanism and the organic forms associated with her country’s natural landscape. Since the days of Alhashemi’s childhood, the familiarity of traditional scenery and nature has largely been disturbed to facilitate the rise of the man-made. In her experimental installations, she searches for a new identity appropriate to the modern condition and deconstructs the viewers’ understanding of their surroundings, introducing an alternative point of view, and creating a new perception of that reality. Drawing inspiration from the natural topography of the UAE, Alhashemi experiments with a variety of materials to position the viewer over the intangible boundary between the natural and the artificial. While colour and texture make her work reminiscent of the traditional landscape, such familiarity is disturbed by the striking contrast of industrial materials that remind the viewer of human interference. Alhashemi’s work captures the essence of her homeland today, striking a delicate balance between modernism and tradition in an unexpectedly harmonious coexistence. She has participated in numerous art fairs and festivals such as Sikka Art Fair, Dubai Design Week, and Sharjah Biennial 11 and was recently commissioned by the Institute de France and the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) Abu Dhabi to showcase her work at the inauguration of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Currently she is one of the artists in residence for SETI-Institute in San Francisco, and her work was featured in EXPO2020 Dubai at the Sustainable Pavilion. She also participated in Desert X in AlUla, KSA in 2022.

Hany is a self taught artist, was born in Cairo in 1975. Rashed worked closely with renowned artist Mohamed Abla - who became his mentor. By experimenting with a wide range of techniques, such as collage, monotype, painting, and sculpture, Rashed continuously reinvents himself and his work. At the beginning of the 2011 Revolution, Rashed played a leading role in documenting part of the contemporary Egyptian history through his sarcastic production. After his comic character "Asa7by"(2012), making fun of the abuse of visual Internet memes. Then, he comes back to explore with much irony the multiple facets of Egyptian life with his gypsum vehicles that re-enact the jumbled chaos of Cairo, the hubbub of the city, and thus the voices of the people. Some of Rashed’s work forms part of the private collection of the Tate Modern Gallery in London. The artist has held several workshops in many Egyptian galleries and elsewhere. His work has been featured all around Europe and Egypt.

Ahmed Karaly graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in 1994 and participated in the annual Youth Salon exhibition organised by the Ministry
of Culture where he received numerous awards. His first solo exhibition took place at the Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art in 2002. He subsequently participated in the Aswan International Sculpture Symposium (AISS), the first of many international symposia for stone sculpture around the world.

In 2005, he received the State Award for creativity and travelled to Italy, where he presented his project al-Masrkhankiyeh, a reconstruction of Islamic architecture in sculptural form, creating a vision for an entire city starting with its gates. The project was presented at the Egyptian Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 2006 and at the Gezira Centre for the Arts in Cairo in 2008. Karaly is currently working on completing this sculptural city.

Tamer Ragab Moussa Mohamed Among the mixture of thoughts he finds himself interested in the moving forces and their effects. The wind's impacting all that it faces, changing its physical appearance, led him to think and start the experiment of how such movement influences my sculpting. These effects begin to appear at the start of each sculpture only to find the piece in a contradictory state with the winds either it suddenly stops being impressed by it, or taking it's prisoner to its motion no matter how strong or big it is. The statue's stability on certain points ensures its ability to fly and move in a symmetrical way. Confirming the conflicting state with such invisible force using nature. Not to mention that human showing a mixture of emotions in addition to their mental state throughout the portrait, or using the strength of the bird facing the winds and it ability to impact it in spite of the birds ability to face the force, or using the abstract compositions using different materials such as Bronze, Marble & Granit to add an extra effect on the statue's visual

Caroline Berzi was born and resides in Egypt, where she received her degree in Business Administration. Following a 7-year career as a financial analyst, her passion for the arts led her to become a full-time artist. Caroline recently graduated from SACI Florence with a Post-Bac Studio Arts Degree in 2019, where she focused on painting, serigraph, and installation works. Berzi did one solo show, Genesis (Motion Art Gallery) on the 10th of June and participated in several group shows: Different Melodies (Ubuntu, 2019), Pendulum (Florence, 2019), The Fleeting Other (Florence, 2019), LePasha (Cairo, 2017) and Artabitta (Cairo, 2015 & 2019).

Berzi was always interested in graffiti, colorful and vibrant artworks. Her work developed from charcoal, pencil and oil paintings to the mixed media ones she does now, and using everyday materials to make art. Her work taps a lot into sustainability and raising environmental awareness and concerns, it stemmed from her interest in abstract expressionism and her inspiration from nature. 

This is a series of conversations with Alexandrian artists who pioneered and shaped the modern art movement. It looks at the relationship between the artist and the city. Marwa Magdy is a graduate from faculty of art education in Cairo 2016 , she is deeply impressed by the form of ANIMALS she said “We can consider the animals a connecting link between man and the earth; it is difficult for humans to relate directly with the natural elements, to understand them in terms of their importance as an ecosystem and therefore habitat that is home to us and asks us to be preserved. The animal, in fact, interacts with us in some way, it looks like we find ourselves in them, even in some places only certain gestures and behavior; it is easier for us to understand who we are and understand the issues of the land through animals. In my works the animals are metaphors of human existential complexity.” she is active at the contemporary Egyptian art movement both in exhibitions and symposium since the nineties.

Vilma has dedicated her career to developing creative industries across New York, Chicago, London and Dubai. She joined Alserkal in 2012 and, in her time with the organisation, she has been instrumental in its evolution and responsible for overseeing Alserkal Avenue’s physical expansion of US$20 million in 2015. Vilma has also been the driving force behind Alserkal’s non-profit activities in the arts, which were formalised under Alserkal Arts Foundation in 2019, affirming the organisation’s commitment to artistic production, scholarship and research.

Egyptian Artist Born in Alexandria 1989, who has studied sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts graduated in 2011& holds an MA (2018). currently a teaching assistant at the faculty of fine arts, sculpture Department, Alexandria University. He has exhibited his artworks since 2011 in different group exhibitions including the Youth salon in its rounds “23 th to 28th” at Cairo opera house, Agenda at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. Participated in Badr International symposium 2017, was supervisor of the universities symposium 2017, Matrouh scrap iron sculpture symposium 2019 & also participated in Aswan international Symposium 2021

Ahmed El Shaer is a multi-disciplinary artist , was born in 1981. He got his B.A. in Art Culture Art College, Helwan University. He  practices spans the mediums of installation, photography, sound, and the moving image with a particular interest in digital technologies. His videos combine Machinima, stock footage, 3D animation and experimental soundscapes, and have been shown at international venues including the Venice Biennale, Bamako Biennale, Cairotronica, the Guggenheim, the Museum of the Moving Image, and Casa Arabe in Madrid. He recently completed a residency in the Game Lab at the University of Los Angeles California, as part of a Fulbright research program.

Lämmli is an artist, philosopher, and educator herself, she works with a comparative and solution-oriented mindset. She has been working for over a decade on art in global contexts and the pressure being brought to bear on existing art notions. She has run practice-based and practice-led research, art and applied projects in joint learning, transdisciplinary, and transcultural settings in Switzerland, Germany, Malawi, Bhutan, India, Hong Kong, China and elsewhere as part of the FOA-FLUX (foa-flux.net) research.

Natalia Kapchuk is a Russian-born London-based artist. She works in mixed media, exploring ecological issues, global effects of pollution as well as protection of the environment. From her early childhood, she took interest in art and gradually learned the basics of sculpting in ceramic. She went to Children’s art school where she studied academic drawing, painting, composition and the history of art. After receiving her BA in international relations , she turns back her attention to the art business and starts creating new art pieces in her studio in Dubai, UAE. Furthermore, Natalia took arts courses at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (London, UK) in 2017 followed by The Chelsea College of Arts (London, UK). Also, She keeps drawing attention to important environmental issues affecting the future of our planet, and seeks to promote harmonious coexistence of humans in every corner of the world

Hossam Zaki’s collection is the manifestation of the intersection between the Artist’s imagination and his fascination with the Etruscan ancient history. Etruscan art was produced by the Etruscan civilization of ancient Italy between the 9th and 2nd centuries BC. It is an art direction that is particularly strong in this tradition were figurative sculpture in terracotta. The artist collection is influenced by the artist’s postgraduate studies in Etruscan sculpture. In parallel to his preoccupation with the ethereal fairy-tale likeness of dreams, where dreams can both demonstrate the good and the evil. Zaki was also intrigued by the idea that all humans, regardless of their character during the day, seem to rest in child-like peace during their sleep. The idea of dreams provided the artist with a rich visual reserve that was expressed through sleepy and dreamy figures that have childlike appearance. In a sense Zaki’s artwork is an expression of a mythical world produced by his dreamy imagination with hints from ancient history.

A plastic artist and currently working as a member of the Alexandria University’s sculpture department staff. Nasr has previously participated in many exhibitions and workshops, with a particular focus on artworks constructed from iron, such as the 24th Aswan International Sculpture Symposium. From his beginnings as an amateur artist, Nasr graduated from Alexandria University’s Faculty of Fine Arts in 2008.Through his studies, he became familiar with the dimensions of art sculpture and raw materials used in the different shaping processes. He became fond of iron, due to the vitality this material gives to sculptures in the formation process, and the speed with which the desired formation can be obtained

Nuria Sanz Gallego, archaeologist and anthropologist, is an international civil servant at the United Nations. She holds a PhD in Prehistory from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain) and a PhD in Human Ecology from the University of Tübingen (Germany). She has developed her professional career as an expert in natural and cultural heritage management in multilateral institutions such as the Council of Europe, European Union, UNESCO and FAO since 1995. She is editor and author of specialized publications on public international law for the preservation of biological and cultural heritage, on traditional and indigenous knowledge and author and editor of more than 40 publications on World Heritage, especially on issues related to human evolution and cultural diversity. In 2009 she was appointed UNESCO's Global Coordinator for Rock Art Heritage. Throughout her professional career she has directed the Latin America and Caribbean Unit of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, from where she has coordinated the largest nomination project for the UNESCO List: Qhapaq Ñan, The Andean Road System, a process in which the largest network of anthropological knowledge in the Andes was established in the framework of the World Heritage Convention. She was appointed Director and Representative of UNESCO in Mexico in 2013, from where she directed among others the scientific programme on the Origin of Food Production and Sustainable Development. In Mexico she has implemented more than 30 projects on indigenous knowledge, on bio-cultural heritage of peasant communities, on crafts and on linguistic diversity.

She has coordinated the UNESCO thematic programme on Sciences and Human Evolution HEADS (Human Evolution: Dispersals, Adaptations and Social Developments) establishing a multidisciplinary network active to date of 250 world scientists in paleoanthropology, genetics, human ecology, archaeology, zoology, palynology, geomorphology and linguistics. She is the editor of 7 volumes of UNESCO on Human Evolution. 

She has been appointed as chief curator of the UNESCO Art Collection, developed its action plan and published two catalogues of the collection and a monograph on African art.

Invited by FAO, she is currently developing the UNESCO-FAO Action Plan as Senior Advisor in the FAO Department of Biodiversity and Climate Change in Rome.  She is now working on the evolutionary history of food since prehistoric times, the importance of traditional knowledge in the production and consumption of food and its contribution to the consequences of climate change.

Hassan Gabr started his way in cross fit since 2012 and became one of the prominent personalities in the fitness filed in Egypt and an example of what it means to be driven, determined, and passionate. Hassan worked on developing his content over many years in the healthy living and fitness field and now he is the fitness content creator of "The Gorillaa". Fayrouz Eid has been working in the wellness industry since 2013 as she was the Brand Ambassador of Lipton Green teas and Unilever’s Nutritionist. then with power of social media she started her start-up the daily crisp.

Noura Abla is a Zurich-based curator, theorist and art mediator. She earned her M.A. in Curatorial Studies and Art Mediation from the Zurich University of the Arts. Abla is active in the arts and culture field in Switzerland as well as in the Middle East. She currently the curatorial assistant at the Kunstmuseum Thun in Switzerland and artistic director of the Fayoum Art Center in Egypt.

Amir Youssef is a visual artist, whose practice is concerned with media archaeology and robotics. He works with a variety of media including video, installation, and sculpture, always exploring aspects of movement and kinetics.

Farrah El Dibany is an opera singer, born in Alexandria, Egypt.      El Dibany joined the Arts Centre of the Library of Alexandria in 2005 and then in 2010, the Hanns-Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. She is the first Egyptian to win the Prix Lyrique de l’AROP, which is the best opera singer award awarded by the Paris Opera house. In 2016, she joined the Paris Opera troupe, becoming the first Egyptian national to ever join the prestigious academy.      She won a number of other awards, including a prize at the 2017 Kammeroper Schloss Rheinsberg Festival and the Wagner Stiftung Prize in 2018. Now, the Egyptian mezzo-soprano is a jury member for the German music competition ‘Jugend Musiziert,’ for the national round of the Eastern Mediterranean region.

Ali is an Egyptian artist born in 1987 and graduated from Law school in 2011. Ali decided to follow his passion for art through sculpting.Ali decided to shift his career by studying art in the Faculty of Fine arts in Alexandria and has received his bachelor degree in 2019. He is currently studying for his masters in Fine Arts in the Monumental Sculpture department. Ali has participated in various exhibitions including Damietta symposium for Universities in 2017. He also participated in the Ostraka International Symposium that took place in Sharm El Sheikh 2018 and participated in Ostraka International Youth Forum in Sharm El Sheikh 2019. Ali is also an award winning artist in the Youth art exhibition for visual arts, sixth session in 2018 in Centre of Creativity. He has exhibited his work in DAI Arab Youth Festival 2018 and participated in the Matruh Symposium for iron and scrap metal that took place in Marsa Matruh. Ali Mostafa was also an organizer in the symposium for reviving humanity in the International Youth Forum that was held in Sharm El Sheikh 2019. The artist’s latest participation is in the "First Time " Exhibition which took place in Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
