21 Dec 2022 | Clueless (1995) with special guest Sarah Heidelberg | 02:36:25
On today's episode, we’re heading out to a Val party and rollin' with the homies on our way out to Sunset, while we revisit the perfect movie that is Clueless (1995). This movie was written and directed by Amy Heckerling. This movie stars Alicia Silverstone (True Crime, American Woman), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man, Romeo+Juliet ), Brittany Murphy (Riding In Cars With Boys, Uptown Girls), and Dan Hedaya (Dick, In & Out). This film is one of my absolute favorite films ever. Everything from the lexicon to the fashions is utterly amazing, and it really began a sea change over what teen films could be. This movie has had a lasting impact on teen movies as a whole, and I'm so happy to be covering this film with my wonderful sister, Sarah Heidelberg. 11 Jan 2023 | Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (1988) with special guest Pickens Barringer | 01:37:45
On today's episode, we’re heading over to the bowling alley to go steal a trophy and go see our not so favorite Uncle Impie, while we revisit the sleazy late 80s cult classic, Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (1988). This movie was directed by David DeCoteau and written by Sergei Hasenecz. This movie stars Linnea Quigley (Graduation Day, Silent Night, Deadly Night), Robin Rochelle (The Slumber Party Massacre, American Ninja 4: The Annihilation), Brinke Stevens (Slave Girls from Beyond Infinity, Nightmare Sisters), and Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Evil Toons). For this episode, I'm joined by my absolute favorite hot mess twink, Pickens Barringer. We talk about him meeting the absolute goddess that is Felissa Rose, a brief history on the direct to video movie market of the 80s, and just talking about this stupid, stupid movie! This film is a perfect example of a "so bad it's good" movie, although I don't know how much I'd agree with that. If you're into bad movies and maybe slightly offensive jive-talking puppets, this might be just up your alley. NOTE: Pickens decided that he needed to show us all how to properly breathe in and out to maintain homeostasis, so you’ll hear him breathing throughout the episode. If that’s a problem for you, I have plenty of other episodes for you to listen to. 04 Jan 2023 | But I'm a Cheerleader (1999) | 01:23:15
On today's episode, we're going to sneak out from True Directions, and head over to the Cocksucker Bar for a night of uninhibited gay fun while we revisit the sapphic campy glory that is But I'm A Cheerleader (1999). This movie was directed by Jamie Babbit and written by Brian Wayne Peterson with a story credit by Jamie Babbit. This movie stars Natasha Lyonne (Slums of Beverly Hills, American Pie), Clea Duvall (The Faculty, She's All That), Rupaul (The Brady Bunch Movie, A Very Brady Sequel), and Cathy Moriarty (Raging Bull, Casper). Other actors in this film include Melanie Lynskey (Heavenly Creatures, Yellowjackets), Dante Basco (Hook, Avatar: The Last Airbender), and a small cameo from Michelle Williams (Dawson's Creek). This movie is such a queer comedic classic, and is an absolute staple for the lesbians and gays in general. It's campy, satirical, over-the-top, but also has some deep things to say about living the gay experience. If you've never seen this film, you should add it to your watchlist immediately, so you can experience this film. 18 Jan 2023 | Saved! (2004) | 01:42:25
On today's episode, we're heading over to homeroom at American Eagle Christian High School, praying for our recently outed friend at Prayer Circle, and maybe perform an exorcism or two with Mandy Moore and her horrible hair, while we cover the religious satire film, Saved (2004). This movie was directed by Brian Dannelly and co-written by Brian Dannelly and Michael Urban This movie stars Jena Malone (Stepmom, The Neon Demon), Mandy Moore (The Princess Diaries, A Walk To Remember), Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone, Richie Rich), Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous, Gone Girl), Heather Matarazzo (Welcome To The Dollhouse, 54), Eva Amurri (The Banger Sisters, Californication), Martin Donovan (Big Little Lies, Weeds) and Mary Louise-Parker (Fried Green Tomatoes, Angels in America). This movie is a great example of an entertaining teen film, and if you haven't ever seen this movie, please do yourself a favor and go watch it immediately!!! 29 Mar 2023 | Heathers (1989) with special guest Donovan Marcotte | 01:33:49
CONTENT WARNING: The plot of Heathers (1989) uses the act of suicide as a plot device for comedic effect throughout the film, and therefore, is a dark comedy. If you are sensitive to those kinds of themes in the media you consume, please be aware of that before listening to this episode. On today's episode, we're going to play a game of croquet with our new best friends, head over to the Snappy Snack Shack for a Turbo Dog, and also try to stop our crazy ex-boyfriend from killing other people at our high school, while we revisit the pitch black dark comedy, Heathers (1989). This movie was written by Daniel Waters and directed by Michael Lehmann. Joining me for this episode is Donovan Marcotte. He's a fellow gay who also loves this movie, and me and him talk about how fabulous this movie is, and just how it shaped us into the 'mo that we are today. This movie stars Winona Ryder (Little Women, Stranger Things), Christian Slater (Interview With a Vampire, Mr. Robot), Shannen Doherty (Charmed, Beverly Hills, 90210), Lisanne Falk (Night on Earn, Less than Zero), and Kim Walker (Say Anything..., A Reason to Believe). This movie is so iconic for the teen film genre. It showed that you can go dark in a high school movie, and paved the way for many movies after it. This film is such a great example of a cult classic, and deserves to be watched by any fan of teen movies or just dark comedies in general. This is also pretty much required viewing for any gay folks, so of course I had to chime in!! 07 Jun 2023 | Jurassic Park (1993) with special guest Barbie Stender | 01:32:17
On today's episode, we're heading down to Isla Nublar to go check out this new park that some weird scientist is trying to open. Turns out, there's dinos afoot!! On today's episode, we're heading over to Jurassic Park (1993). This movie was written by Michael Crichton and David Koepp and directed by Steven Spielberg. This movie stars Sam Neil (Possession, Event Horizon), Laura Dern (Blue Velvet, Marriage Story), Jeff Goldblum (The Fly, Independence Day), Wayne Knight (Seinfeld, Dirty Dancing), and Richard Attenborough (Miracle on 34th Street, Doctor Dolittle... from 1967) I'm joined on this episode by a long time friend of mine (and fan of the pod), Barbie Stender. Me and Barbie talk about her history with this film (and the series as a whole), and also get to talk to her about being a mom and being able to pass this down to her kids (who also enjoy this film). I love to get movie fans on and get to talk with them, and Barbie was a fabulous guest! This movie doesn't need a fucking intro. You know what it is!! Let's dive in!!! 03 May 2023 | The Craft (1996) with special guest Sarah Heidelberg | 02:10:45
On today's episode, we're heading over to St. Bernard's Academy for homeroom, cast some spells to get our deepest wishes, and we're also going to invoke the spirit, while we revisit the 90s teen horror flick, The Craft (1996). This movie was directed by Andrew Fleming, and was co-written by Peter Filardi and Andrew Fleming. This movie stars Robin Tunney (Empire Records, Prison Break), Fairuza Balk (The Worst Witch, Return to Oz), Neve Campbell (Scream, Wild Things), and Rachel True (Nowhere, Embrace of the Vampire). Also included in the cast are Skeet Ulrich (Riverdale, As Good As It Gets), Breckin Meyer (Clueless, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare), and Cliff DeYoung (Dr. Giggles, Shock Treatment). This movie has its highs and lows, for sure. If anything, it's an example of a horror movie that explores the idea and world of witchcraft, and is an example of a decent mid-90s horror flick. This movie is also an absolute sleepover movie (especially for young women and probably queer folks), so it has a certain place in the hearts of the fans that grew up with it. It's worth a watch if you've never seen it, and for a horror fan, definitely should be on the list to watch, as well. 25 Jan 2023 | Can't Hardly Wait (1998) | 01:51:44
On today's episode, we're throwing our caps and gowns in the air and heading over to the big party after graduation, cruising in the car while listening to Barry Manilow, and getting locked in the bathroom with our distant childhood friend turned lover, while we revisit the absolutely 90s cult classic teen film, Can't Hardly Wait. This movie was written and directed by Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan. This movie stars Ethan Embry (Defending Your Life, Empire Records), Jennifer Love Hewitt (I Know What You Did Last Summer, Party of Five), Peter Facinelli (Nurse Jackie, Twilight), Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under, Law and Order), Seth Green (Family Guy, Robot Chicken), and Charlie Korsmo (Hook, Dick Tracy). This movie also includes a bazillion other cameos from up-and-coming stars in Hollywood including Melissa Joan Hart, Jason Segal, and Selma Blair. This movie screams late 90s to the fullest, and is a true example of doing a lot with a smaller budget. This movie definitely paved the way for other teen films after it, and it's absolutely worth a watch for those who haven't seen it, and it's an enjoyable, quotable, romp for those who are very familiar with it. 01 Feb 2023 | Popcorn (1991) | 01:05:28
On today's episode, we're heading over to the Dreamland Theater for our all night horror movie marathon, while we have a sick Reggae concert in the middle of it for seemingly no reason, and we're also trying to fight for our lives against a scary man with no face, while we revisit the forgotten early 90s horror gem, Popcorn (1991). This movie was written by Alan Ormsby and directed by Mark Herrier. This movie stars Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather, When a Stranger Calls Back), Tom Villard (Grease 2, My Girl), Dee Wallace (The Howling, Cujo), Kelly Jo Minter (The People Under The Stairs, A NIghtmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child), and Tony Roberts (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, Amityville 3-D). This movie is such an odd find and definitely marches to the beat of its own drum, and I think is absolutely the definition of a forgotten horror gem. Does the plot make a whole lot of sense? No!! Is some of the imagery in this movie legitimately scary? Yes!! Is Reggae music always the right choice? Absolutely!!! Take a chance and watch this film, and you might get something fun out of it!! On today's episode, we’re heading to the mall to get some great deals at the end of the world, and also going to infiltrate this underground bunker being ran by these shady scientists, while we revisit the kick-ass 80s sci-fi/horror classic, Night Of The Comet (1984). This movie was written and directed by Thom Eberhardt. This movie stars Catherine Mary Stewart (Weekend At Bernie’s, Days Of Our Lives), Kelli Maroney (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Chopping Mall), Robert Beltran (Eating Raoul, Star Trek:Voyager), Geoffrey Lewis (Midnight In The Garden of Good And Evil, The Lawnmower Man), and Mary Woronov (TerrorVision, The House Of The Devil) This movie is a wonderful example of sci-fi/horror, and includes some impressive zombie special effects on a fairly small budget. This film oozes the early 80s, and I love it!! If you’re a horror fan or a fan of 80s movies, do yourself a favor and watch this!!! 15 Feb 2023 | Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) | 01:17:59
On today's episode, we're heading back in time in our decked out phone booth to "borrow" some historical figures from the past, so we don't fail our final history project, while we revisit the beautiful buddy comedy classic, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989). This movie was co-written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon and directed by Stephen Herek. This movie stars Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, My Own Private Idaho), Alex Winter (The Lost Boys, Freaked), George Carlin (The Prince of Tides, Outrageous Fortune), and Robert V. Barron (Night Court, Eating Raoul). We also have a bunch of other appearances from folks like Al Leong (Lethal Weapon, Die Hard), Jane Wieldlin (Clue, Mission Hill), Dan Shor (Tron, Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College), and Tony Steedman (Scrooged, The Golden Girls). This movie is absolutely a gem, and if you haven't seen it already, you should change that!!! This is a silly buddy comedy on the surface, but I also think has some good messages tucked in there, as well. It's smartly written, and is a worth a watch, for sure!! 22 Feb 2023 | Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) | 00:57:57
On today's episode, we're heading over to the Battle of the Bands to try and save the world, but before that, we have to make a little pit stop over to both Heaven and Hell, while we revisit the absolutely excellent buddy comedy classic, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey (1991). This movie was directed by Pete Hewitt and co-written by Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. This movie stars Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix), Alex Winter (Death Wish 3, Grand Piano), William Sadler (The Shawshank Redemption, Die Hard 2), Joss Ackland (Watership Down, Lethal Weapon 2), Pam Grier (Jawbreaker, Bones), and George Carlin (Carwash, Dogma). This movie is such a departure from the first film (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure), but I think it's a great sequel in its own right, and it has a certain visual style and edge to it, that really makes it set apart from movies in a similar vein. I recommend checking it out to see how warped this story gets and seeing these actors having such a fun time making the film. Remember to be excellent to each other, and party on dudes!!! On today's episode, we're logging onto Mima's Room, turning on an episode of Double Bind, and also trying to evade the weird pop idol ghost that's chasing us around Japan, while we revisit the absolutely beautiful anime classic, Perfect Blue (1997). This movie is such a beautiful film, and is honestly so goddamn unsettling for a host of different reasons. This is a great psychological horror film, and it's an absolute treat to watch and cover it on the show. This movie is so beautifully atmospheric and haunting. This movie stars Megan Fox (Transformers, Hope & Faith), Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, The Dropout), Johnny Simmons (Evan Almighty, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and JK Simmons (Whiplash, Juno) This movie is a great example of a cult classic, because it was wholly misunderstood when it first came out, and has enjoyed a reappraisal in recent years regarding the feminist themes in the film, and I completely love that for this film. This movie is such an early 00s horror movie that it's not even funny; It's got the blue tint, the nu-metal soundtrack, and the slo-mo that just makes the movie that much creepier *rolls eyes*. This movie is directed by Gary Winick and written by Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith. This movie stars Jennifer Garner (Alias, Juno), Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac, Shutter Island), Judy Greer (Jawbreaker, Halloween Kills )and Andy Serkis (The Lord Of The Rings Film Series). This film came into my life a bit later, but i'm glad it did. Also, as an absolute Jennifer Garner STAN, it was a definite must-watch at some point. 12 Apr 2023 | The Brady Bunch Movie (1995) | 01:29:54
On today's episode, we're heading back to 90s era Los Angeles, where we're going to hear a story about a lovely lady and a man named Brady, while we revisit the absolutely iconic camp classic, The Brady Bunch Movie (1995). This movie was directed by Betty Thomas and written by Laurice Elehwany, Rick Copp, Ronnie Turner, and Terry Turner. This movie stars Shelley Long (Troop Beverly Hills, Cheers), Gary Cole (The West Wing, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law), Michael McKean (Clue, This is Spinal Tap), and whole host of other folks like Christine Taylor (The Craft, Night Of The Demons II), Jennifer Elise Cox (Six Feet Under, The Comeback), and Rupaul (But I'm A Cheerleader, To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar) This movie is the epitome of perfection when it comes to TV to film adaptations, and it's such a great example of how to do parody right. On today's episode, we're watching our figures for our new boyfrands, doing some amatuer detective work, and also heading out on a Hawaiian vacation, while we revisit the absolutely fever dream of a movie that is A Very Brady Sequel (1996). This movie was directed by Arlene Sanford, and written by Harry Elfont, Deborah Kaplan, James Berg and Stan Zimmerman This movie stars Shelley Long (Outrageous Fortune, The Money Pit), Gary Cole (The West Wing, The Good Wife), and Tim Matheson (National Lampoon's Animal House, She's All That). We also have some great performances from Olivia Hack (Hey Arnold, Avatar: The Last Airbender), Christine Taylor (Campfire Tales, Zoolander), Jennifer Elise Cox (EDtv, Moesha) and Christopher Daniel Barnes (Spider-Man, The Little Mermaid). Included along with these folks are fun cameos from Rupaul, Rosie O' Donnell, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and John Hillerman. This movie was made out of the immense success of the first film, but in true sequel fashion, goes off the rails and dives into more of the camp/kitsch territory. This movie has a bit more of an edge to it, and really cranks up the over-the-top nature, but for some reason, this movie feels like a nice, warm blanket, and I will watch it at any time to get all the feels! It has a phenomenal cast of characters, but the story and overall messaging is kind of all over the place. If you are a Brittany Snow stan or teen movie fan, strap yourselves in for a bumpy ride.
