27 Jun 2020Canceled Too Soon #191 | Samurai (1979)01:04:26

In the late 1970s, when TV shows like WONDER WOMAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK ruled the airwaves, there were a lot of failed TV series that tried to jump on the vigilante money train. Enter SAMURAI, a failed television pilot about a district attorney who also moonlights as a samurai-themed crimefighter!

It's weird, it's ill-conceived, and they could never get away with it today. But could it be that SAMURAI was... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold travel back to the era of the "Shag Carpet Superhero," when vigilante shows were basically like every other tv series but with one half-assed superhero scene in them at the end!

20 Oct 2017Canceled Too Soon #69 - Drak Pack (1980)01:15:37

Monstober continues! Remember when Dracula changed his name to "Big D" and recruited a teenaged vampire, werewolf and Frankenstein monster to become crappy superheroes and fight the villainous Dr. Dred and his dopey henchpersons in O.G.R.E. (The Organization of Generally Rotten Enterprises)? You don't? Well, lucky you.

Throw your nostalgia away, because this week on CANCELED TOO SOON we're going to explain way the 1980s basically sucked, and how much of the blame lands squarely on the shoulders of Hanna-Barbera. William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold walk you through every colossally stupid episode and, finally, ask the only question that matters: Was DRAK PACK canceled too soon?

15 Dec 2017Canceled Too Soon #77 - Fishing With John (1991)01:27:52

FISHING WITH JOHN was one of the weirdest talk shows, fishing shows, reality tv shows or shows of any other kind. The series followed composer John Lurie as he invited celebrity guests Jim Jarmusch, Tom Waits, Matt Dillon, Willem Dafoe and Dennis Hopper to exotic locales, where they went fishing. Badly.

That's it. That's the whole series. FISHING WITH JOHN was either a merciless satire of television, a serious meditation on the smaller moments in life, or the mellow predecessor of manic Adult Swim absurdism (or all three).

But was it... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold analyze a series that practically refuses to be analyzed in the latest episode of the podcast.

12 Aug 2022Canceled Too Soon #232 | Dead at 21 (1994)01:59:03

The first live-action scripted TV series was everything you could possibly want from the 1990s: youthful rebellion, political paranoia, and what very well could be the most amazing soundtrack in television history.

It's called DEAD AT 21, it's what happens when you put THE FUGITIVE and THE X-FILES and Tower Records into a blender, and it's an all-new episode of CANCELED TOO SOON, with special guest Angie Seibold!

28 May 2017Canceled Too Soon #48 - TerrorVision (198X)01:18:48

The history of television is full of horror anthology shows like THE TWILIGHT ZONE, TALES FROM THE CRYPT and THE OUTER LIMITS, but we've never seen anything quite like TERRORVISION. This low-low-low budget horror series about monsters, vampires and murders aired on the Lifetime network in the 1980s, and it's either absolutely terrifying or totally, utterly laughable.

But was TERRORVISION, the show that plays like 1980s porn directors were adapting half-baked campfire stories... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are here to put more thought into this weird series than anyone else ever has, and reveal its existence to a world that has for decades lived in blissful ignorance of TERRORVISION's existence. How bad could it have possibly been? Pretty darn bad...

06 Jan 2019Canceled Too Soon #131 - Tagteam (1991)00:54:11

Professional wrestlers Jesse "The Body" Ventura and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper starred in several action hits in the 1980s, like THEY LIVE and PREDATOR, but their big TV team-up never made it past the pilot stage! TAGTEAM stars Jesse Ventura and Roddy Piper as lovable wrestlers who get banned from the ring and become cops instead.

It's big, it's goofy, and there's a scene where a piano falls out a window and onto a totally different piano. But was TAGTEAM... canceled too soon? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold look back at the days when WWF/WWE wrestlers first entered the acting world, how times have changed, and why TAGTEAM might have actually been a huge hit if it weren't for behind the scenes shenanigans.

09 May 2016Canceled Too Soon #2 - Perversions of Science (1997)01:03:57

William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold journey into the subatomic world of a popcorn kernel, where a sexy robot tells scary stories in PERVERSIONS OF SCIENCE, a spin-off of the popular HBO series TALES FROM THE CRYPT that only lasted for one season.

Was HBO right to cancel PERVERSIONS OF SCIENCE, or was it canceled too soon? Our hosts guide you through every episode of this forgotten anthology series, and rank all ten episodes from worst to best. Some of them are brilliant, some of them are awful, and a lot of them feature weird guest stars like Paul Williams, Wil Wheaton, Sean Astin, Elizabeth Berkeley, Jason Lee, Kevin Pollack, William Shatner and POOCHINSKI's own George Newbern!

11 Nov 2018Canceled Too Soon #122 - Marvel's Inhumans (2017)01:27:36

Not every chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a success. Despite the best efforts of Disney, Marvel and ABC, MARVEL'S INHUMANS takes some of the most fascinating characters from the Fantastic Four comics and drops them in the middle of a boring adventure series about classist a-holes who oppress an entire civilization into manual labor because their powers aren't cool enough... and they're the GOOD guys.

Was MARVEL'S INHUMANS a great idea ruined by bad filmmaking, or was it doomed from the very start? And most importantly, was it CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold give you the troubled history of this Mighty Marvel Misfire and break down what works, what broke down, and why nobody cared.

20 Jul 2017Canceled Too Soon #55 - Cliffhangers! (1979)01:29:35

Why make three televisions shows when you could make one for three times the price? From the developer of THE INCREDIBLE HULK, THE BIONIC WOMAN and V comes the incredibly ambitious CLIFFHANGERS!, a television series consisting of three wildly different, serialized stories called STOP SUSAN WILLIAMS (about a plucky reporter investigating a deadly conspiracy), THE SECRET EMPIRE (about a cowboy who discovers a secret society of aliens living underneath Wyoming) and THE CURSE OF DRACULA (about the curse of Dracula).

It's a really cool idea, but the question remains: was CLIFFHANGERS! canceled too soon? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold dive into each of the three crazy, action-packed, unexpectedly romantic mini-shows packed inside of CLIFFHANGERS! and figure out what works, what doesn't, and why such a cool-sounding tv series failed to find an audience in 1979. (Hint: It aired opposite HAPPY DAYS.)

The smash hit western BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID probably could have been the basis of a pretty good TV show, but that's not what we got with BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KIDS! It's a Hanna-Barbera animated TV series about a teen band that solves mysteries for a talent agent supercomputer with dog allergies.

It's one of the most non sequitur shows in Hanna-Barbera history (and that's saying something), but was it... CANCELED TOO SOON? 03 Jul 2016Canceled Too Soon #6 - Hot Springs Hotel (1997)00:59:14

At the height of the "Skinemax" boom of the 1990s, HOT SPRINGS HOTEL reigned supreme. It was a sitcom about oversexed jerks who ran a hotel and solved every problem (that they usually caused themselves) by having sex with it. Constant, very vanilla intercouse abounds as the cast of HOT SPRINGS HOTEL lives out their weird fantasies in their one and only season on Showtime.

But was HOT SPRINGS HOTEL canceled too soon? Your hosts William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold investigate this very strange Skinemax phenomenon, and sit through some very un-erotic episodes as they try to unlock the many mysteries of HOT SPRINGS HOTEL. It's our weirdest episode yet, and you won't want to miss it!

19 Jul 2024Canceled Too Soon #245 | "Geico Cavemen" (2007)01:54:48

We're kicking off a new season of CANCELED TOO SOON with one of our most requested episodes ever: CAVEMEN (2007), a very short-lived sitcom based on the popular commercials from GEICO, in which cavemen still walk among us but have to contend with racism and stereotypes.

Co-starring Nick Kroll, Sam Huntington, Jeff Daniel Phillips and Julie White, it's one of the most notorious misfires in television history.

22 Mar 2019Canceled Too Soon #141 - Dead Last (2001)01:26:53

Back in the glory days of the Dubba-Dubba-WB, a group of rock musicians found a magic amulet and won the power to talk to ghosts! And since they're selfish rock stars, they find it really annoying. It's DEAD LAST, a weird new live-action, primetime take on the old Hanna-Barbera schtick, from the writers of GROSSE POINT BLANK and HIGH FIDELITY!

It's got the ghosts, it's got the gags, and it's got the goods, but was DEAD LAST really... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold take their time machine back to the early 2000s to figure out why this completely forgotten supernatural series deserves to be rediscovered by fans of shows like Supernatural!

24 Sep 2018Canceled Too Soon #115 - Blood Drive (2017)01:20:03

It's the distant future, the year 1999, and BLOOD DRIVE is a hit television series starring real life serial killers who race across the country, in cars that run on human blood instead of gasoline. With post-apocalyptic monsters at every pit stop, can a goody two-shoes cop and his murderous partner hit the finish line before their heads blow up?

BLOOD DRIVE is the most GRINDHOUSE television series we've ever seen. But does it belong in the past, or was it... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold review the SyFy original series that nobody talked about, even though they should have, with episodes about sex zombies, 1950s diner cannibals, and an adorable little town called "Cronenburgh," as our SUDDENLY LAST SEASON month continues!

23 May 2020Star Wars: Episode Zero - Dersu Uzala!00:53:34

Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are working backwards through film history, using STAR WARS as the starting point!

This week on EPISODE ZERO they explore the gorgeous and contemplative story of DERSU UZALA, a Russian film directed by Japanese master filmmaker Akira Kurosawa! This true story about a cartographer who befriends a small, uneducated, but impossibly brave and wise man in the wilds of Siberia was the direct influence for the creation of Yoda, and some of the most iconic moments in STAR WARS. And it may also be the key to unlocking the deeper meaning behind the different planets we visit in the franchise!

This week's guest host is B PETERSON, the founder of THE SCREEN'S MARGINS, a podcast network dedicated to cinematic voices that many other podcasts ignore! The episode features interviews with great movie minds like ANNA CAMPION, MARK EDWARD HEUCK and HAROLD URTEAGA, and (after a short introduction by Bibbs and Witney) it's EXACTLY as long as MY DINNER WITH ANDRE. 10 Jun 2019Canceled Too Soon #150 - The Lone Gunmen (2001)01:47:49

It's time to bring CHRIS CARTER MONTH to an appropriately abrupt conclusion with THE LONE GUNMEN, one of the most notorious one-season wonders in TV history. The comic relief sidekicks from THE X-FILES got their own TV series, with decent ratings and critical acclaim, with conspiracy-driven storylines that accurately predicted tech companies spying on consumers and - in the show's shocking pilot - the 9/11 attacks.

THE LONE GUNMEN is a show with a huge cult following, and that's why we saved it for a special occasion! Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold dive into the show that only lasted one short season, before getting an unexpected and disappointing conclusion on THE X-FILES.

Is THE LONE GUNMEN the classic everyone makes it out to be? Was it really... CANCELED TOO SOON?

21 Mar 2020Canceled Too Soon #183 | Earth*Star Voyager (1988)01:18:32

TEENS! IN! SPACE! The expensive Disney sci-fi mini-series EARTH*STAR VOYAGER was a pilot for a television show that never took off, about attractive and precocious space teens in the future, on a fifty year mission to find a new planet for humanity to live on!

Featuring the stars of REVENGE OF THE NERDS, THE MONSTER SQUAD and THE LONE GUNMEN (and many more), and a score by the great Lalo Schifrin, it's weird that EARTH*STAR VOYAGER has been almost completely forgotten by popular culture.

Was it really CANCELED TO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold embark on an important mission of their own, to find out!

08 Dec 2017Canceled Too Soon #76 - David Cassidy: Man Undercover (1978-1979)01:39:02

The late, great David Cassidy was a tv star, a pop star, a teen heartthrob and - for one short season - a hard-boiled undercover cop infiltrating drug dealers, gun runners, baby smugglers and high-octane grocery store thieves. You know, like you do.

But let's be honest here... was the pop culture curio DAVID CASSIDY: MAN UNDERCOVER canceled too soon? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold delve into every episode and discover that this seemingly absurd TV series was 21 JUMP STREET a decade before 21 JUMP STREET, and POINT BREAK a decade-and-a-half before POINT BREAK, and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS over two decades before THE FAST AND FURIOUS.

Yes, really.

19 Mar 2017Canceled Too Soon #38 - Manimal (1983)01:36:29

In the history of television, there are few shows that have a more embarrassing reputation than MANIMAL, an NBC series that ran for eight short episodes in 1983, and starred Simon MacCorkindale as a crimefighter who turns into a panther, a hawk, and any other animal the situation requires. Audiences balked, critics laughed, and MANIMAL became a pop culture punchline that endures to this very day.

But was MANIMAL... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold are on the case! They're breaking down every absurd episode of MANIMAL and giving this infamous dud the critical attention it was always denied, asking the important questions about animal transformations that nobody ever asked (probably). Plus, they've also tracked down the episode of the long-forgotten superhero series NIGHTMAN which - fifteen years after the cancelation of MANIMAL - finally wrapped up the superhero's story... badly.

16 Dec 2018Canceled Too Soon #128 - Star Command (1996)01:14:26

STAR TREK was all the rage in the late 1990s, and a lot of other shows were eager to rip off the classic sci-fi show's formula, with interstellar exploration, major moral conundrums, old-fashioned naval wars in space and a bit of sexual tension. Hence, we got a pilot like STAR COMMAND, in which gorgeous 20-somethings take over their vessel when the captains die, and wage war against the bad guys all by themselves.

It's got lasers! It's got Morgan Fairchild! It's got virtual reality porn! But was STAR COMMAND really... CANCELED TOO SOON?

Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold delve into this forgotten sci-fi pilot to dissect the whole STAR TREK knockoff genre, share their favorite TREK-themed memories, and explain why STAR COMMAND should have been called SPACE SHOW: THE SHOW.

04 Sep 2016Canceled Too Soon #11 - Black Bart (1975)00:39:51

It was 1975, and Warner Bros. had to do SOMETHING with BLAZING SADDLES or else they'd lose the rights. Their solution: shoot four whole seasons of a sitcom spin-off called BLACK BART, starring future Academy Award-winner Louis Gossett Jr., and only air a single episode. Loopholes! You gotta love 'em!

BLACK BART is one of the weirdest series in TV history, but was it... CANCELED TOO SOON? Join film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold as they delve into the strange saga of BLACK BART, and decide once and for all if the show deserved to be shelved forever or if it deserved to be seen.

14 Sep 2017Canceled Too Soon #64 - Emerald City (2017)01:23:19

Everyone loves THE WIZARD OF OZ, so of course they made it "badass". From the minds behind shows that were canceled after only one season like SIBERIA, DRACULA and AMERICAN GOTHIC came the sure-fire hit EMERALD CITY, a grim 'n' gritty reboot of L. Frank Baum's fantasy classic, which is now about death and racism and climate change and skinless dudes and warriors wearing cat hats and crucified amnesiacs and witches who nunneries and brothels.

And yet somehow this sure-fire smash from the director of THE IMMORTALS and MIRROR MIRROR was canceled after only one season. But was EMERALD CITY... canceled too soon?

Rachel Cushing from the MOVIE TRIVIA SCHMOEDOWN is here to help William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold review this ambitious but strange television event that failed to ignite the imagination of a generation, but might have been kinda neat. Maybe.

19 Nov 2018Canceled Too Soon #124 - Solarman (1986, 1989, 1992)01:04:43

The late, legendary Stan Lee helped reboot and recreate the superhero SOLARMAN for a very, very, VERY short-lived comic book series, and a failed cartoon pilot about dweeby comic book nerd whose dad wishes he was more into sports, and who turns into a fantabulous hunk of a hero! He teams up with a stupid robot and fights a bad guy who uses a death ray that destroys suns to save up for the day when he REALLY tries to be evil.

SOLARMAN can be easily defeated by a slightly cloudy day, but was he... CANCELED TOO SOON? William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold delve into this failed pilot, which was made in 1986, released in 1989 and then re-released in 1992 (just in case), and figure out what the heck is up with it. 10 Apr 2017Canceled Too Soon #41 - The Master, aka Master Ninja (1984)01:45:14

Fans of MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 know all about MASTER NINJA, a series of "movies" starring Lee Van Cleef as an old white ninja and Timothy Van Patten as his hunky hamster-enthusiast sidekick. But before MASTER NINJA got riffed on by MST3K it ran for an entire season on NBC in 1984, under the title of THE MASTER, and featured guest stars like Demi Moore (GHOST), Crystal Bernard (WINGS), George Lazenby (ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE) and several future stars of STAR TREK.

But was THE MASTER... CANCELED TOO SOON? Film critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold guide you through all 13 episodes of the notorious television series, including nine shows that MST3K never got to, and guide you through the weird wide world of 1980s fetishes - like aerobics classes, trucker lingo, ninjas - via this one strange action-adventure series where they all (briefly) collided.

26 Jul 2020Canceled Too Soon #194 | Spider-Woman (1979-1980)01:42:08

When Disney Plus launched it came with a gargantuan bevy of animated Marvel superhero shows from across time and space, and a lot of them were potentially CANCELED TOO SOON!

This week, critics William Bibbiani and Witney Seibold explore the failed 1979-1980 animated television series SPIDER-WOMAN, a superhero with vaguely spider-like powers who (in the show, not so much the comics) runs a magazine and fights monsters and mad scientists and for some reason hangs out almost exclusively with an incompetent and sexist photographer!
