27 May 2023 | SHORT FORM to PODCAST HOST: No BS tips from podcast strategist w/ Dylan Schmidt | 01:17:05
Dylan Schmidt is the host of Digital Podcaster and the creator of the Podcast Newsletter.
(Subscribe to the bonusfootage.co newsletter for more bars)
In this podcast episode, Tom and Dylan Schmidt discuss how to start a podcast and monetize it. They recommend starting with a minimal viable podcast setup, which can be as simple as recording audio with your AirPods or any microphone you have. The next step is to think of your big idea and break it down into smaller ideas that can be used as episode topics. Dylan emphasizes the importance of understanding your listener and being genuinely interested in the topic being discussed. Tom suggests practicing your skills by reaching out to people that have their own shows and offering to host or facilitate their audience's questions. For specific recommendations, they suggest the Samson Q2U microphone for remote interviews and solo shows, which costs around $50. They also recommend hosting your show on platforms like Anchor or Libsyn and monetizing through sponsorships, merchandise, and listener support.
Key Points
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to starting a podcast, and it can be overwhelming, so start with the basics and build from there.
Creating content requires a strong mindset, including dealing with anxiety and imposter syndrome.
Setting achievable goals, even smaller ones like the number of episodes, helps to stay motivated and overcome imposter syndrome.
Podcasts are a sustainable format for content creation and can attract audiences who prefer evergreen content.
Don't rely on chance to attract listeners, be shameless in promoting your podcast
Focus on listener behavior and recommend similar podcasts at the beginning of each episode
There is a need for tools to help beginner creators market their podcasts.

14 Jul 2021 | 10 Lessons For Aspiring Creators (Reaction to Matt Ragland's Atomic Essay) | 00:24:14
So I’m scrolling through Twitter….
And I come across this atomic essay from Matt Ragland.
This is what it reads….
10 Lessons For Aspiring Creators… (https://twitter.com/mattragland/status/1399073914039459841?s=20)
The intro reads…
“I started creating content with my first blog in 2011. In the 10 years since, I’ve hosted two podcasts, built a YouTube channel, worked at creator-centric start-ups (ConvertKit then podia, and made the jump to full-time creator.”
In my 10 year overnight success, I learned a lot of lessons. Here are the best for aspiring creators.
I read the rest of the essay… and it’s gold. I resonated with a lot of the points and said...
I gotta’ share this with my buddy.
Which I normally do when I see fire content. But then I thought, it’d actually be fun to call him and record ourselves breaking down these ten lessons and share our hot takes.
And this buddy, is a fellow creator. Here’s worked with me on various projects through the years. He’s created for multiple multi platinum artists, billion dollar brands, and he’s built successful media platforms.
Now, he’s not really an in front of the camera kind of guy. He’s more of a behind the scenes builder. As opposed to me, who puts myself out there, my name on everything, yells at the camera, he’s in the cut, just cooking. But that’s his style of being a creator. Neither is better than the other. You have to find what works for you and your personality.
I thought it’d be awesome to share his perspective.

19 Oct 2021 | How to ask podcast questions & what Andrew Warner learned from over 2000+ interviews | 00:56:25
Andrew Warner is a legend in the podcasting space. He's been podcasting since before podcasts were a thing. He just released a new book called Stop Asking Questions, that you can get check out here: https://www.stopaskingquestions.co/
Andrew Warner is an entrepreneur and host of the hit startup podcast, where he uncovers the secrets of the world’s best founders. Over the course of 2000+ episodes, Andrew has interviewed everyone from Barbara Corcoran, to Gary Vee, to founders of AirBnB.
The reason I was so excited to interview Andrew… is because I first started podcasting, trying to think of questions and outline the interviews was a challenge… and it’s still a challenge, there’s no guide or clear direction. I was just guessing.
Thankfully, Andrew just wrote a book about it called “Stop Asking Questions”, How to lead High Impact Interviews and Learn from ANYTHING From Anyone.”
This exact book I was looking for.
If you don’t believe me… take it from Seth Godin… who says…
"This is a book about respect. Respecting others enough to interview them well. Respecting your audience enough to do the work. And respecting yourself enough to be clear about what you're doing and why."
This conversation served almost as a free one on one consultation from one of the best interviewers in the world, on how how to have an engaging conversation.
Please don’t tell Andrew, because I don’t want him to bill me...
Crazy enough... Andrew even shared this interview on his OWN podcast, Start Up Stories, which was one of the highest compliments coming from someone like him.

16 Jun 2021 | How Creators Are Building Brands (and why I love creators so much...) | 00:31:15
Welcome to “Creators Are Brands", the show that explores how storytellers are building brands online.
From the mindsets, to the tactics, to the business side, I am fascinated how these individuals are building brands around their individualities. In this show, we learn what’s working, so we can apply that to your mission.
We’ll do this by talking to creators, their teams, the platforms that power them, and doing solo shows that break down specific ideas from my own experiences or perspective of how others are thriving.
We focus on impact driven creators. The storytellers who seek to make a positive impact on the world with their content.
Hi... I am Tom Boyd. I do not seek to be an expert on this show. The goal in this show is to be a journalist, a detective, an explorer who reports back to you with what’s working for these successful creators so you can apply what you learn to your own mission.

14 Dec 2021 | How to build relationships with the “Creator Dot Connector” (Zack Honarvar of One Day Entertainment) | 00:58:51
Zack Honarvar manages some of the biggest creators in the world. He’s also the founder of Fan Of A Fan and CreatorNow. Zack is a friend and someone who I consult with on a consistent basis and I’m excited to bring some of his ideas to you. He has an amazing way of simplifying complex ideas and providing helpful frameworks for thinking about your brand as a creator.
My favorite part of the show was highlighting some of my favorite tweets of his and having him elaborate on his thinking. This is one of those shows that you might have to listen to twice to fully unpack the gems from Zack.
One of my favorite quotes from the show was:
“When you’re passionate about something, and you’re building it for the right reasons, and you have really good intentions, you attract good people around you.”
In this episode, we discuss :
How to build genuine relationships in the creator economy
What to look for in talent
What creators can learn from musicians and vice versa.
Why it’s easier to put in the work when you know your “why”
What the true measure of success is for him
How he build his management team
Why people need to make moves and less announcements
Why it’s important to be clear on the expectations on money with your team

This is the episode all about landing your first Brand Partnership.
In this episode, I let CHAT GBT interview me on my own podcast.
These are the topics that we discussed:
What are some of the biggest challenges you've faced in growing your audience, and how have you overcome them?Shifting my mentality of creating for attention to creating to provide value.
How do you come up with new content ideas, and how do you stay inspired and motivated to create? Conversations.
What are some of the most important skills you've learned as a content creator, and how have they helped you succeed? Storytelling. Networking. Creative strategy. But most importantly, the fact that actually building online — is the best way to learn marketable skills.
How do you balance creating content with other responsibilities, like work or school? This is my power hobby. When I do at least an hour of my own stuff every day, I feel accomplished. If you have a full-time job, approach your creator stuff as a power hobby. Everyone has hobbies. Whether it’s going out to bars, fantasy football, adult league sports, scrolling, whatever. Build online (podcast, shorts, newsletter, digital writing) — because even if it fails you develop marketable skills. I call it a power hobby. Something you enjoy. You build your network. You create digital assets. You acquire skills along the way. And it’s an outlet for self-improvement.
What are some of the most common mistakes you see new creators making, and how can they avoid them? Comparing themselves. It’s a volume game. Being willing to look silly.
How do you engage with your audience, and what strategies do you use to build a strong community around your content? I am my audience.
How do you approach collaborations and sponsorships, and what advice would you give to creators who are just starting out in this space? Know what they’re paying for. Double it. Permissionless partnerships.
What are some of the most valuable lessons you've learned about creativity and content creation, and how have they influenced your work? Everyone can be a creator. Not everyone should be or is built for it.People who want to, can do it. It’s not easy. It’s not quick money.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for the future of your content. My goal, is for this podcast to be the go-to resource for solo creators. This podcast is your creator companion. When you set out to create and share online, not many people in your immediate world can emphasize with how challenging it actually is. I get it. The guests on this show get it. So as you’re building. As you’re creating your own brand online. As you’re turning this into side income or a real business, the goal is simple for this to be a resource for you along the way. If it is, I also would love I’d share it with a friend.

She’s a full-time creator and host of the podcast Web8.

In a world where everyone is telling us to speed up, we talk about intentionally slowing down to create more of what you love, how to create your own algorithm, we talk about her integrated holistic way of working with sponsors (that i encourage you to borrow), why she stopped selling courses even though they were bringing in crazy money, how to re-frame feelings of jealousy or comparison of other creators, why she’s quitting being an influencer, and stay to the very end and she shares a strategy for connecting with your audience through every digital thing you make.
