11 Jun 2020#41- My Journey With Selective Mutism00:19:44
In this episode, I share my experience with Selective Mutism as a child and how creative resilience was a factor in me coming out of my shell. I was a REALLY shy kid. Like almost got held back in kindergarten because I wouldn't talk to anyone. The turned-my-head-away-from-anyone-who-looked-at-me type of shy. BUT. Put me in front of a tree and I would figure out how to climb it; to the very top. Throw me a kickball and I'd come up with a new game with my best friend/cousin. Tell me a story and I'd write three more endings. Give me one of those awesome square washcloth-making loom crafts and I'd make 50 of them in a day. (Bless my mom, she claimed everyone at work bought them for $1 each. Years later I found them hidden in a drawer!) And that was the saving grace for me. I had parents who endlessly supported my creativity throughout my childhood, teens, and early adult years. My dad being a musician was always giving me a high-five for picking up another instrument. My mom, a total craft-a-holic, would allow me to watch over her shoulder for hours as she made wood-burned spoons, Christmas dough ornaments, and stained glass stars (she made those for our wedding!). With all of that support, I eventually broke out of my shell and flourished in the right circumstances. I was lucky. So many of the children we work with don't have incredibly supportive parents. So many children have faced insurmountable trauma. So many children have developmental differences that make even the simplest things, incredibly difficult. And creativity might just be their resiliency factor. Their superpower. Their out. The research shows that creativity supports self-esteem, emotional expression, individuality, self-worth, and much more. As clinicians, we can provide that space for our clients and nurture that creativity muscle. But, we have to do some work on our end. Now you know the story of why I am so passionate about this work. I'd love to hear your story!!! 30 Jul 2020#48- Creativity & Resiliency with Kate!00:25:22
In this episode, I share with you about creativity as a resiliency factor for ourselves as therapists, for children, and for the larger community. As therapists, there is no better time to deepen our understanding of resiliency factors in children. The more resiliency factors a child has, the more likely they will thrive in the world, despite the challenges they may face. Creative resiliency is a factor that we can easily support in children and it has profound ripple effects. Children are naturally creative, and unfortunately, this skill is too often lost as children move into adulthood. I am super passionate about this topic (which you probably already know) so I hope you enjoy this episode and find it helpful for your practice! Kate is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, Board Certified Music Therapist, and is about to sit for her exam to become a Licensed Professional Counselor. She's spent her career supporting children with life-limiting medical diagnoses, mental health needs, and developmental differences through creative expression. Kate is passionate about the intersections between the creative arts modalities and helping therapists build creative resiliency in children. 13 Aug 2020#50- Building A Private Practice with Reina Lombardi, LMHC, ATR-BC01:10:59
On today's episode, Reina Lombardi, a fellow podcaster joins us to chat about the many things she does in her business. Reina is an art therapist, private practice owner, podcaster, and supervisor for art therapists as well as licensed mental health counselors in the state of Florida. Reina talks with us today about her decision to start a private practice and gives so many great tips about private practice along the way. She is a jack of all trades and does those trades so well! Don’t forget to check out her podcast, The Creative Psychotherapist if you want to learn more about private creative arts therapy practices!  Also check out her website, the creative clinician's corner to get resources, and more support for your business adventure! About Reina:  I’m Reina Lombardi, a seasoned art therapist, mental health counselor, and practice maven and I am thrilled to be in your corner offering education, resources, and support to help you build and scale your dream practice. The Creative Clinician’s Corner, LLC is The Practice Building Resource for Creative Psychotherapists. Grad school taught me how to be a therapist, how to do research and write academic papers. It did not, in any way, prepare me to set up and manage a successful private practice. I always had dreams of owning a practice but had absolutely no idea how to do it. After 7 years of working in the field, I decided to take the dive headfirst with zero preparation. Fortunately, I landed as an independent contractor in a fabulous small group practice and learned through immersion. And, there is so much to learn! I took what I learned there and struck out on my own where I quickly realized I needed to learn even more and fast! I created this resource to help my creative colleagues get ahead of the learning curve by providing them with the skills and strategies that will help them Dream up, Plan out, Build and Scale the thriving private practice of their dreams. I decided to launch the Creative Clinician’s Corner after years of having colleagues request my help, guidance, and support on their path into private practice. Independent contractor in a group practice--I’ve done it. Launched a solo practice and brought it from nothing to full in less than six months-- yep, I’ve done that too. Grew that solo practice into a thriving, small, and continually growing group practice--running it now and loving it!. That is my goal for you - LOVE what you are doing AND make a decent living, too. Take a listen and get inspired! Hi Everyone! I’m Christa. I am a hobbyist photography, writer, plant mom, nature lover and content creator on IG. I’m the owner and founder of Creative Minds At Play LLC. I work full-time as Director of Counseling Programs at a nonprofit organization, and part-time in private practice at Seven Corners Psychotherapy in Northern Virginia. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Registered Play Therapists Supervisor and Nationally Certified TF-CBT Therapist, and Board Approved Licensure Supervisor by the Virginia Board of Counseling. Creative Minds At Play LLC was created out of my love for creativity and play therapy, and my desire to share with others the benefits that creativity and play has when used as both a personal and a professional tool. Creative Minds At Play LLC currently offers continuing education trainings for mental health professionals, workshops, clinical supervision, and consultation services.  I am in the process of creating my very first children’s book and e-course.One thing that my friends, family and colleagues would say about me is that I am always striving to learn something new, and the first to share my knowledge with others. In true Capricorn nature, I am an extremely hard worker and I strive hard to serve others with the highest level of integrity, ethics, and professionalism. I am lifelong learner, and teaching comes natural to me.I enjoy integrating creativity into therapy with the use of play, expressive, art-based, and sand tray therapies. Creative adults, teens, and children, and I work very well together. However, I have many clients who don't identify as being creative but want to explore alternatives to traditional talk therapy. I am also a trauma therapist for adults, teens, and children. My approach to treating trauma is integrative. I incorporate expressive and art-based therapy, narrative therapy, self-empowerment, and resiliency-building skills, and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy to treating trauma. The focus is on healing and building post-traumatic growth. I have ten years of experience and have utilized play and expressive therapy techniques with individuals, families, and groups of all ages.  My approach to treating trauma in youth incorporates integrative play therapy, neurobiology, and attachment theory. I work systemically with families with the goal of strengthening the parent-child relationship and supporting both the child and parent(s) in the development of skills to improve the overall family dynamics. I am skilled at helping children in areas of self-esteem, interpersonal skills, and emotion regulation. I help adults in healing their inner child, adjusting to life changes, exploring their life purposes, and developing a healthier sense of self. One of my favorite quotes is "the creative adult is the child that has survived." I am a creative, mental health therapist and a black woman helping others learn how to survive and thrive with the use of creativity. Follow Christa on Instagram!
