The Beauty of National Poetry Writing Month:

NaPoWriMo, similar to its prose-centric counterpart National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), is a celebration of the written word and the boundless creativity that can flow when one dedicates themselves to a daily practice. Poets of all levels of expertise are invited to take part, from seasoned wordsmiths to those just dipping their toes into the vast ocean of verse.

With a daily commitment to producing poetry, participants discover new facets of their writing style, experiment with various forms, and explore uncharted emotional territories.

Prompt for today

Last but not least, here’s today’s optional prompt. This one comes from the poet and fiction writer Todd Dillard, who provided this idea on his twitter account a few months ago. The idea is to write a poem in which two things have a fight. Two very unlikely things, if you can manage it. Like, maybe a comb and a spatula. Or a daffodil and a bag of potato chips. Or perhaps your two things could be linked somehow – like a rock and a hard place – and be utterly sick of being so joined. The possibilities are endless!

Poem for Today

Two Sides Same Coin

22 April 24

The coffee-stained steno note pad decided one day to crawl from under the dust of neglect and seek out the cell phone

Its wire binding was loose and its companion the bic pen had been lost after never coming back from getting cigarettes

The pad of paper felt neglected, its blue lines fading

Where once my innermost thoughts filled its pages

Now were curling up unused and unwanted

The pad scrapped along the floor

Leaving a scratch in the flooring

And it saw the endless stairs up to my room

Sighed deeply and found a way to the top by standing on end and grasping for the next step

My cell phone was communicating and noting my breaths and snores as I slept

Plugged in and cared for like a king

It slept just a mere foot from the bed

Unaware of what was coming up from the basement

The blue light and the life-giving electricity flowing through its circuits

Years ago, I had abandoned one of my oldest friends

And determined that due to low light

And spilled drinks

And the fact that i couldn’t see the words I had inscribed

I would switch to reading my poetry off my phone as I had seen younger poets do

It was easier to flip through apps on a phone

Versus flipping through pages of steno note pads

Sometimes I would bring the wrong one

Other times due to clumsiness I would spill my coffee and the liquid would seep into the pages

Low light at most readings made it impossible to see

The steno climbed the last stair

And made its way into the...

Making Fun A Habit Series

30 days to add fun into your creative practice. I will be going through Mike Brennan's Make Fun A Habit workbook and help you make fun a habit. I had the pleasure of interviewing Mike on my other podcast Find A Podcast About and talking about his podcast Creative Chats. This workbook leads you through steps to rekindle the fun in your life and get you in a space where you are your most creative. This is a 30 day book and I will be tackling each day as if it were a week and providing you insights on how you can use his ideas in your creative practice. Each chapter is broken up with a short story, questions to ponder, action items and tips.

The #1 Rule, there are no rules

We all have to follow some rules, whether we create them for ourselves or they are imposed on us by others. Why not make rules for yourself that clearly define what your values are and then let others know about them. They will create boundaries that others will respect. I used to be against all rules, but then I found that I could be creative within the confines of the rules and usually worked hard when they were imposed on someone else. Now I am the rule maker with my kids, it is tough, but I try to help them understand why we do what we do.

Question to ponder

  • Would you describe yourself as a rule breaker or a rule keeper? Why?
  • What were some of your favorite childhood games? What did you like about them?
  • What rules did you have a hard time with? Why? How would you have rewritten the rules?

Action item: Write your own personal life rules Think about why they are important to you. Consider if you could make your life anything you wanted, what would it look like?

Tips:

  • Reflect on your values and desires
  • Start small and build gradually
  • Be specific and actionable
  • Write them down

Prompt for today

Finally, here’s our prompt – optional, as always! This one comes to us from Moist Poetry Journal, which posted this prompt by K-Ming Chang a while back:

What are you haunted by, or what haunts you? Write a poem responding to this question. Then change the word haunt to hunt

Poem for Today

Haunted, Hunted By

19 April 24

I saw the look on her face

The horror of almost losing her life

I heard the way she tried to speak but no words formed

When the words did come forth

She sounded like the 4-year-olds she would never know

I felt the leathery skin

Tissue paper thin, veins easily seen but not easily pierced

I smelled the stains on her fingers

And the ashtray breath when she kissed my cheek

Her heart had given out

She was initially unable to speak

The one who was so protective of me

Was now the one that I protected

Her dead body with makeup on that she would never wear

I said goodbye to that corpse knowing there was nothing there

Walking back from the park

At the start of the pandemic

My left side turned off

From shoulder to toe there was nothing there

Walking between my two children

Each one holding me up

On the left was my child who reminded me of the mother I lost

On my right was the child that reminded me of my fury and anxiety

They got me home without incident

And I laid on the couch

Unable to tell my wife what I was feeling

Worse yet, unable to tell her what I wasn’t feeling

I didn’t end up in a pine box that day

My speech has slowed a bit, halts from time to time

I can hear it, but no one else notices

I can feel the oblivion coming but no one else listens

I quiet myself in preparation

The end will be lonely

Even if I am surrounded by my loved ones

I will be unable to say it is time

I make plans to leave a sign for when it’s time to die

Wanting to...

Prompt for today

And now for our prompt – optional, as always! Today, we’d like to encourage you to take a look at @StampsBot, and become inspired by the wide, wonderful, and sometimes wacky world of postage stamps. For example, while it certainly makes sense that China would issue a stamp featuring a panda, it’s less clear to us why the Isle of Man should feel the need to honor 2001: A Space Odyssey in stamp form. From Romanian mushrooms to Sudanese weavers to the Marshall Islands getting far too excited over personal computing, stamps are a quasi-lyrical, quasi-bizarre look into what different cultures (or at least their postal authorities) hold dear.

And if you’re not on or able to access the @StampsBot account, fear not! You may find an inspiring stamp or two by perusing the online “International Philately” (say that three times fast) exhibit from the National Postal Museum.

Poem for Today

Self-Delivered Eulogy

15 April 24

It was the last album from a man who transcended what was normal

It was his last goodbye

No one was worthy to say the final words

So, he said it all himself

In a world that tried to define him

He constantly defied expectations

I wept on that day he left us

And when I saw his song Lazarus on the screen

I felt this was his end

We won’t see another like him

Saying that seems so passe’

We didn’t have much to compare him to

Prince, yes, Hendrix possibly

Freddy and Leonard were cut from the same cloth

And I wept when they passed

There was a hole that refused to be filled

No one could console me

No one ever will

He was a black star in a sky full of light

He marked his ending with one last curtain call

Leaving us with one last goodbye

Thise who mocked him

And tried to take his hero status down a...

And now for our optional prompt. If you’ve been paying attention to pop-music news over the past couple of weeks, you may know that Taylor Swift has released a new double album titled “The Tortured Poets Department.” In recognition of this occasion, Merriam-Webster put together a list of ten words from Taylor Swift songs. We hope you don’t find this too torturous yourself, but we’d like to challenge you to select one these words, and write a poem that uses the word as its title.

Poem for Today

Albatross

29 April 24

The chip on my shoulder

Grew legs and wings

And started to strangle me

It fed me regurgitated lies

And was my sole source of nourishment

The weight on my shoulders got so bad

That I stooped when I walked

My head was always down

I was focused on what was behind me

Instead of the path before me

I felt comfortable

I felt safe in my solitude

I felt good that I would be the harbinger of my destruction

But then I got tired of being tired

I got tired of having the weight I didn’t need

I saw others who didn’t struggle like I did

And I wanted what they had

So, I stopped eating the food

I pried off the wings and feet

And I threw the bird off my shoulders

I was able to leap

I was able to find new food

I was able

My back straightened

My steps increased

And I was able to do more

Be more

Prompt for today

Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem titled “Wish You Were Here” that takes its inspiration from the idea of a postcard. Consistent with the abbreviated format of a postcard, your poem should be short, and should play with the idea of travel, distance, or sightseeing. If you’re having trouble getting started, perhaps you’ll find some inspiration in these images of vintage postcards.

Poem for Today

Wish You Were Here

Postcards to Heaven

7 April 24

If you are reading this

Then you already know you are dead

I survived the journey

I have surpassed what you have left me with

I have a home

A wife

Some kids

And I didn’t go to jail

And I didn’t cheat on my wife

And she didn’t cheat on me

And I didn’t rape my children

And they aren’t living in fear of me

And they aren’t living in fear of an imaginary sky buddy

I was able to use this useless degree

To make a life for us

I win

You are dead

And your death was almost my undoing

But I went forward

I kept moving

And it's hard to hit a moving target

Create Art Podcast: Listener Reviews and Upcoming Events

Welcome to a special edition of the Create Art Podcast, where we delve into listener reviews and upcoming projects that are stirring excitement. My name is Timothy Kimo Brien, your host, and I'm thrilled to share some heartfelt interactions and future plans with you. As fall graces us here in Fredericksburg, Virginia, bringing its pumpkins, leaves, and crisp weather, it feels like the perfect time to pause and reflect on what we've accomplished together.

Listener Reviews and Acknowledgments

One of the highlights of this podcast journey has been the incredible feedback from listeners and collaborators. Recently, I received a touching message from a long-term listener and fellow collaborator, York Campbell, who runs the Welcome to Earth Stories podcast. York shared his thoughts on my episode about harnessing negativity for creativity, expressing how it resonated deeply with him. Feedback like this reminds me why sincerity and honesty are at the heart of this show.

Additionally, I took the opportunity to share reviews from various guests who have graced the podcast. Dr. Joshua Karbala praised the engaging and comfortable environment we've created here, while Shabana highlighted the inspiration she found in our conversations. It's words like these that affirm the connections and impact we are making.

Upcoming Events and Personal Growth

Looking forward, there are some exciting events and personal milestones on the horizon. I am participating in personal training for my health, tackling hypertension and diabetes, and have found great solace and balance through a 90-day meditation challenge led by Yogi Brian. This practice has brought calmness and clarity, reinforcing my belief in the power of meditation to aid personal development.

In terms of creative projects, November brings National Novel Writing Month, during which I'll be finishing a novel that I started years ago. I also plan on compiling a poetry book comprising five years of poems from NaPoWriMo. On the visual arts front, I'm working on a collage of show art and aspiring to host an exhibition of my string paintings.

New Ventures and Opportunities

I've recently launched TKB Podcast Studio, my podcast consulting agency, already gaining traction with my first client. If you're looking to start your own podcast, I'm here to help you cut through the noise. Furthermore, I'm exploring affiliate partnerships with services like Podcast Beacon, Podmatch, and Pod Page — all of which have significantly enhanced my podcasting experience.

Final Thoughts

The interactions and experiences shared in this post highlight the power of art to connect and inspire. Whether through personal transformation or creative endeavors, every step is about expressing and sharing our journey. I hope you find encouragement in these stories to tame your inner critic and create more than you consume.

If this resonates with you, share this post with friends and let them discover the stories and possibilities that creative involvement can unlock. Remember, as we move forward, keep showing your work, whether it’s writing, music, or podcasting. Encourage yourself and others, and let your art be a testament to your journey and growth.

Thank you for joining me in this reflection and for being a part of this creative community. Feel free to reach out at Timothy at createartpodcast.com. Together, let’s continue to pave the way for art and inspiration.

Prompt for today

our optional prompt for the day asks you to play with rhyme. Start by creating a “word bank” of ten simple words. They should only have one or two syllables apiece. Five should correspond to each of the five senses (i.e., one word that is a thing you can see, one word that is a type of sound, one word that is a thing you can taste, etc). Three more should be concrete nouns of whatever character you choose (i.e., “bridge,” “sun,” “airplane,” “cat”), and the last two should be verbs. Now, come up with rhymes for each of your ten words. (If you’re having trouble coming up with rhymes, the wonderful Rhymezone is at your service). Use your expanded word-bank, with rhymes, as the seeds for your poem. Your effort doesn’t actually have to rhyme in the sense of having each line end with a rhymed word but try to use as much soundplay in your poem as possible.

Poem for Today

Word bank:

See : turntable

Hear :music

Touch : prickly

Taste : sour

Smell : vinyl

Concrete noun :

Speaker

Record

Sleeve

Verb :

Cradle

Lift

Analog Escape

13 April 24

I escape to my mancave and gaze at the turntable

When I am able

The music that escapes the speakers

The kick fills my ears and I am feeling weaker

My skins sensation is prickly

The heart beats quickly

When the record spins

My hand moves toward the air

And when the sounds stop, I open another sleeve

And begin to weave my mind into a sour mood

I feel dower by the hour

And cradle the next vinyl

The fable I tell myself makes me mindful of the time

And I spin another until I find my favorite thing

And now for our last prompt of the year – optional, as always! Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem in which the speaker is identified with, or compared to, a character from myth or legend, as in  Claire Scott’s poem “Scheherazade at the Doctor’s Office.”

Poem for Today

A Dark Elf (Drizzit)

30 April 24

For ages beyond measure he has existed

From a race of those who shunned the light

He stood out from their accursed nature

He became a hero to some

A traitor to his people

And when he tried to pursue his natural instincts of life

He was abandoned by both

When I first read of his travels and adventures in Icewind Dale

It wasn’t his fighting prowess that I admired

It wasn’t his abilities I coveted

It was his ability to stand up for himself

In the face of what others said was right or wrong

The light that comes from the darkness

Is always brighter than the light that comes from the sun

It has much farther to travel

And more dangers to overcome

Prompt for today

Today we’d like you to start by taking a look at Alicia Ostriker’s poem, “The Blessing of the Old Woman, the Tulip, and the Dog.” Now try your hand at writing your own poem about how a pair or trio of very different things would perceive a blessing or, alternatively, how these very different things would think of something else (luck, grief, happiness, etc).

Poem for Today

The Father the Kids and the unholy spirit

5 April 24

I lied many times to protect you

And I told you to never lie to me

I said your grandparents were dead

So that's only a half-lie

I told you some of the horrors that befell me at their hands

And I told you I was trying to be better than them

Because they didn’t know what they were doing

That was a lie

Through living, I discovered many of the things they told me were lies

And so you too will discover that there is no tooth fairy

There is no Easter Bunny or Santa Claus

There are evil people in the world that want to destroy you

And some of them you are related to

And that is what I have to protect you from

So, they are dead to me

And it's not too much of a lie

And I want you to not live in lies

Because when we live in lies

We are living in fear

And there is enough of that to go around

I don’t want you to fear the dark

Or the monsters that lurk in your head

Or the monsters that lurk in mine

I’ve killed them many times

He told us from a young age that his parents had died

We felt sorry for him and compassion

He told us eventually what had happened

When we turned 18

When he thought we could handle the truth

But we missed out on having a grandfather

When all the other kids had nice normal families

We wonder what else he has lied about

Is he really our father

Is he really kind and protective

Can we ever trust anything he says

This family lives in the shadows

And we want to see the light

Is the anger we feel at being lied to

The anger he struggles...

What is National Poetry Writing Month?

Welcome, art enthusiasts and wordsmiths alike, to another episode of Create Art Podcast! We are diving headfirst into the enchanting world of poetry as we celebrate National Poetry Writing Month (NaPoWriMo). This annual event, which takes place every April, encourages poets and aspiring writers around the globe to embrace their creativity and commit to writing a poem each day for the entire month.

Create Art Podcast has always been a haven for artists to share their creative processes, and NaPoWriMo offers a unique opportunity for poets to reflect on their craft. With a daily commitment to producing poetry, participants discover new facets of their writing style, experiment with various forms, and explore uncharted emotional territories.

Prompt for today

And now for our prompt – optional, as always!  Today we’d like to challenge you to write an “American sonnet.” What’s that? Well, it’s like a regular sonnet but . . . fewer rules? Like a traditional Spencerian or Shakespearean sonnet, an American sonnet is shortish (generally 14 lines, but not necessarily!), discursive, and tends to end with a bang, but there’s no need to have a rhyme scheme or even a specific meter.

Poem for Today

Things Left Undone

27 April 24

There are squished raisins around the floor being covered by dust bunnies

There are several records that were desired that are left unplayed

Multiple piles of books growing monthly that are unread

The comic books that provided an escape now are trapped in stasis

Sketch pads that haven’t been scrawled upon with deteriorating-colored pencils

Left over pressure treated boards from a deck that needs to be sealed and stained

A fire pit that has never seen a fire lit or had smores roasted upon

Keyboards that creak when looked at in anticipation of being played

Awards just waiting to have their time in the spotlight on a wall of love

Empty cardboard boxes that used to be the home waiting to be recycled

A neighborhood waiting to embrace the occupants of this home

An infinite amount of blank digital sheets waiting to be filled with ideas

Letters waiting to be crafted to let friends know their importance

And here I am among all of this, bored, wanting to create but never knowing where to start

Prompt for today

our optional prompt for the day asks you to try your hand at writing a sijo. This is a traditional Korean verse form. A sijo has three lines of 14-16 syllables. The first line introduces the poem’s theme, the second discusses it, and the third line, which is divided into two sentences or clauses, ends the poem – usually with some kind of twist or surprise.

Poem for Today

Nothing Is Not Me

28 April 24

The coffee pushes me forward because I need to be pushed

I can’t be left alone for too long for I will do nothing

Nothing is never what I wanted to be, nothing is not me

Trying to fill the holes that hope to be fulfilled with things

Amassing things and trinkets just collects dust and debris

Things filling up nothingness are empty, nothing is not me

Promises to do better, ideas that inspire,

It begins with an effort, and then more effort

Effort is movement, to move is divine, nothing is not me

15 May 2024Interview: Putting The Spirit Back Into Your Art00:40:56

Tapping the deep well of inspiration in spirituality

Recently I had the privilege of speaking with Kirsten about pantheism and using our spirituality as a source of our inspiration. I hadn't given much thought to using the deep well of spirituality as a source of inspiration, however, after talking with Kirsten, I felt a close connection and plan on scouring the depths of my spiritual practice as a back-sliding Taoist as a source of my inspiration. This interview was made possible through PodMatch and is how I get many of my guests.

Questions I posed to Kirsten

  • How did living overseas change my life?
  • How do you approach finding guests for your show?
  • How do you stay organized and motivated to consistently produce new episodes?
  • How do you navigate the balance between individual expression and the collective consciousness in your artwork, given your pantheistic beliefs?
  • How do you navigate the tension between the impermanence of art and the eternal essence of nature in your creative work, given your pantheistic perspective?
  • How do you envision the role of art in fostering a deeper connection to nature and the universe, as inspired by your pantheistic beliefs?

About Kirsten Rudberg

Having grown up overseas (in both Guyana, South America as well as Lahore, Pakistan) it was only later that I understood that my childhood has dramatically shaped me in ways that I did not expect. They even have a Wiki entry for kids like me, "Third Culture Kids" and let me tell you, I fit it to a "T!" My childhood was informed by the Islamic call to prayer and my education at the American School had me playing with kids from all over the world of every color, creed and religion. When one grows up like this, is it any wonder that the world becomes enchanted? That other humans become enchanted? I am endlessly thrilled with meeting other people and getting to know who they are and what makes them tick. I find that developing relationships and building respectful community, as well as joy-filled community is essential to my being happy. I live an enchanted life and besides for being a "creative" and author, I also have an animated series on YouTube called "Murder of 2," about two crows who sit on a line and observe humanity, as well as multiple other projects I'm working on right now. I am a panentheist, who believes that Spirit or Energy or God/Goddess exists in all I can see and not see, and that magic and miracles are real and potent. This is the gist of my podcast, Byte Sized Blessings, where I interview people of all kinds asking them about powerful moments in their lives, ones that changed them forever. I walked the Camino in 2013 and that is a story in itself...I believe in adventure, in joy, in feeding my heart with belief in other people and that eventually we will create the communities and spaces that will heal and include everyone. (at least everyone that wants to be included, because, boundaries!)

Prompt for today

Our optional prompt for the day challenges you to write a poem that recounts a historical event. In writing your poem, you could draw on your memory, encyclopedias, history books, or primary documents. If you’re interested in a little research, you might find interesting this collection of letters written during the American Civil War, or this collection of primary documents concerning South Sea voyages. Or perhaps you might find something of interest in digging through Europeana, an online clearinghouse of digitized materials from cultural institutions across Europe.

Inspiration for this poem came from Ronald Regan Radio Address

Poem for Today

Crate Digging

20 April 24

A package had been sent it me

The shape familiar

Just over 12 inches square

So carefully I opened it

And found placed with care

A record sleeve with no picture

And the only writing on it was Ronald Regan 1961

I opened it and found the familiar shape of a 12-inch record with no label

So, I took off the record I had played last

Something by Miles Davis or john Coltrane

And put this new, mysterious record on the platter

Recovering from the demon rum and weed

That my jazz obsession claimed on me

I pressed the play button

And the tone arm raised,

Moved over to the starting groove

And set down as delicately as a mother placing her newborn baby down for a nap

I sat back into my easy chair

As the sound of Ronald Regan’s voice came over my speakers

There was no music

Just his voice droning on and on

He told me the horros of socialized medicine

And how that would destroy my savings

How it would cost me my livelihood

How it was unamerican

How my son, he must not have read my FBI...

here’s our prompt for the day – optional, as always. Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a surreal prose poem. For inspiration, check out Franz Kafka’s collection of short parables (my favorite is “The Green Dragon”).

Poem for Today

A Coffee Shop in Abilene Texas

3 April 24

I walked into a coffee shop in Abilene Texas

Spent the next few decades trying to find it again

The Purple Pope of Abilene was slinging drinks behind the counter

He was also slinging smack in the back room

Preaching the words of one Andre’ Breton

Who I never heard of in my travels at that time

A painter sat in that coffee shop

He mistook Abilene Texas for Abilene Kansas

And was stuck there for decades for his mistake

He sold me paintings of Nietzsche and Hendrix

And one that was cursed with ants crawling over skulls in a jungle

He was our version of Dali

There were poetry readings spontaneously

Mostly young men gathered around a table

Slipping pieces of paper back and forth to each other

And the one I call Bear

Belting out my feeble scratching's with the authority of Tzara

Helping me find my voice in the chaos of the day

On-the-spot spectacles occurred with no frequency

Drag shows, one-act plays and pronouncements

Spelling out the flaws of this Texas town

As if Artaud was among us

Sharing his absinthe

As these playwrights downed another spiked smart drink

Oh to be back there

Back in my youth

When life was simpler

When I thought I had made the biggest mistake

I found a home

Where I could be what I dreamed

If only for a few hours a day

And after all these years of searching

For another place to replace the first one

I have found it

But now I am the old man

Yes, And

Doing improv is not about being funny, its about taking what your scene partner gives you and running with it. Improv doesn't just happen on the stage, it happens when two or more people get together and trust each other enough that they can go along with whatever the other person gives them. Yes it can be funny and usually is when professionals do improv, but they have taken the time to get to know each other in order to know what the next person will do. Life doesn't have a script, neither should your art.

Question to ponder

  • What seems exciting or scary about improv?
  • How do you think improv can create some fun and impact specific areas of your life and work?
  • Who do you know whom seems to be a master of improv? What makes them a master?

Action item: Learn some improv exercises such as Yes And, One word at a time, Scene swap, hot potato

Tips:

  • Be prepared to fail
  • Listen to your partner
  • Be specific
  • Be Honest
  • Have Fun

Prompt for today

Today’s (optional) prompt asks you to write a poem of at least ten lines in which each line begins with the same word (e.g., “Because,” “Forget,” “Not,” “If”). This technique of beginning multiple lines with the same word or phrase is called anaphora, and has long been used to give poems a driving rhythm and/or a sense of puzzlebox mystery. To give you more context, here’s an essay by Rebecca Hazelton on her students’ “adventures in anaphora,” and a contemporary poem that uses anaphora to great effect: Layli Long Soldier’s “Whereas.”

Poem for Today

Listless Is How

14 April 24

Listless is how I wake

Looking at my goals of the day

What I need to accomplish

Needless chores each and every day

Actions that won’t be remembered in perpetuity

Listless is how I feel

As the motions that are meaningless begin to take shape

Looking at all the things I want to fill this hole in my soul

Watching the dust pile up

I can’t even keep up with cataloging the objects that I once thought I desired

Listless is how I live my life

Without interest in the outcome

Without passion that used to drive me on

Without the interest in learning new things

Without challenging the status quo

Listless is how I move through the day

Pushing through the fog that is comprised of mental strain

Pushing through the obstacles I place in front of me

Pushing through the mud that becomes paintings

Pushing through the words on the page

Listless is how I sleep

Never getting the rest that I find is required

Never inspired by what I see in dreams

Never recharging myself and taking naps that pushes me farther behind

Never catching up and going ahead of where I want to be

Listless is how I never wanted to be

Avoiding the trap of thinking none of this...

Prompt for today

Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a platonic love poem. In other words, a poem not about a romantic partner, but some other kind of love – your love for your sister, or a friend, or even your love for a really good Chicago deep dish pizza. The poem should be written directly to the object of your affections (like a letter is written to “you”), and should describe at least three memories of you engaging with that person/thing.

Poem for Today

When You Found Me

2 April 24

When you found me

I was at the ripe old age of 19

Didn’t know my ass from a hole in the ground

And some days I feel the same

When I walked into that coffee shop in Abilene Texas

And I still live there in my mind

You welcomed me

Gave me a start on my journey

Made sure My Favorite Things played

In that dust bowl of a town

Where I thought I had landed on Mars

And the civilization I had encountered before

Didn't prepare me for what was ahead

When you found me again

As I was driving all over my hometown of Screw City

Getting high 13 times a day

I sat there with an old friend

Whose feet stank of bad cheese

Who didn’t have enough money to pay for electricity

Who had a god that he followed religiously

Whose sister was my next conquest

You stood by me and made sure my car didn’t kill anyone

Including me

You and my old friend listened to my rantings

As I read books from other madmen

And found that you had found them as well

And I wanted to emulate them

In hopes you would cradle me in your warmth

When you found me next

I was still on the weed

And I handed you over to my nephew

In hopes he would surpass me

In hopes he wouldn’t have to struggle as much

In hopes he would be able to handle the dragon raging on the inside

You found him, but he was too young

And had others finding him

Helping him tell his story

Accompanying him through his journey

And now in the mornings when he sleeps in after driving around all night

I invoke you to slip into his brain and provide some sort of relief

When you found me for the first time

Before the coffee...

Prompt for today

Today, we’d like to challenge you to write – without consulting the book – a poem that recounts the plot, or some portion of the plot, of a novel that you remember having liked but that you haven’t read in a long time.

Poem for Today

Waking to a new life

1 April 24

Based on Metamorphosis from Franz Kafka

It was a day in June, 2014

I woke up bleary eyed on a couch

Much like other nights, but I heard some noises around me

Noises that weren’t the Redline El

Noises that weren’t police sirens

Noises that weren’t cars honking

An unknown body laid next to me

I heard their breathing

The snores seemed familiar from long ago

Like I had laid with this person before

But I didn’t know who it was

And I sprung up

Something inside me said there should be more sounds

The daylight had broken

The heat of the day started

And I was somewhere I didn’t remember

The air smelled different

There seemed to be more space

As my eyes grew accustomed to the dim light peeking through

I looked over the coffee table

And saw two babies

Gurgling, happy, warm and fed

Gently waking up, small yawns, gripping at invisible animals

The person beside me was a lover from the past

This wasn’t my studio on the north side of Chicago

But I didn’t know where I was

And a small cry broke the silence

And a cat strolled past casually, calmly

My instincts took over

And I walked to the baby crying

Hushed them, cuddled them

And my past lover quietly watched the baby and I

Her eyes piercing through the fog

And welcoming me back into the world

That we had created

The baby was tiny, fit on my forearm, needed a new diaper

And I took them over to the table

A table filled with diapers and wipes

And like an

Hey friends, this is Timothy Kimo, Brian, head instigator for "Create Art Podcast" and your guide to the podverse for "Find a Podcast About." I recently attended the Empowered Podcast Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina, and I wanted to share some key takeaways and insights from this enlightening experience with you all.

The Journey to the Empowered Podcast Conference

Attending the Empowered Podcast Conference was an exciting endeavor. I usually attend the Indy Pod Conference in New Jersey and have been to DC PodFest in the past, so this was a new experience for me. Thanks to a 20% discount code shared by Alex Sanfilippo from PodMatch, I decided to make the five and a half hour drive to North Carolina. The drive was pleasant, filled with beautiful weather and a slew of podcasts to keep me company.

First Impressions and Connecting with Fellow Podcasters

Upon arriving at the Hyatt in Charlotte, I checked in and immediately gravitated towards the communal table on the second floor, where conversations about podcasting were already underway. Meeting the conference founder and various podcasters felt like reconnecting with old friends. Being around people who share my passion for podcasting was a rejuvenating experience, despite my family sometimes growing weary of me mentioning the word "podcast" countless times.

Setting Intentions: A Unique Approach

The conference kicked off with a unique session on setting intentions, involving a guided visualization exercise to help us focus on our goals and what we wanted to achieve from the conference. We were provided with journals to jot down our thoughts on what we wanted to embrace and let go of, which was a first for me at any conference. This session helped frame my mind positively for the rest of the event.

Networking and Learning

An exciting part of the conference was the opportunity to meet Alex Sanfilippo from PodMatch, who gave an insightful talk. One of the highlights for me was how the entire event was woven around the theme of intention and authenticity, especially relevant as my goal is to foster community growth within the podcasting sphere.

Defining Intention

To define what intention means, intention is a plan or goal aimed at achieving a specific purpose. For me, intention signifies clarity and purpose, especially in the context of my podcasts. My key takeaway was the need to be clear about our intentions and how we can be of service to our audience and guests.

Prompt for today

And now for our (optional) prompt! Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that repeats or focuses on a single color. Some examples for you – Diane Wakoski’s “Blue Monday,” Walter de la Mare’s “Silver,” and Dorothea Lasky’s “Red Rum.”

Poem for Today

The Color of High School

21 April 24

I remember the scene shop in the theater where other students were tagging the walls with Rush, I was blasting out UB40’s Red Red Wine

I’d sing that song till my throat turned red

Feeling the words touch my soul every time

Filling me with hope that I would find a love worthy of that song

Drinking the apple wine Night Train with its dark red label

When at my lowest points I’d scrawl on my notebooks our mascot the J-Hawk

With a gun pointed at his head

And the pale blood of loneliness and teen angst splattered against an indicated wall

No one saw these depictions

Which is probably for the best

The walls of some of the hallways glowed when we lost power

A high school built initially to be a prison had few windows

At least that is how the story went

The stoners and the underground kids flicked their lighters

And we found our way to the blazing exit signs that always had power

The crimson letters guiding us to safety

At the D Door

Where smoking was tolerated

I’d see teachers and students monkey fuck each other

To light their cancer sticks and cowboy killers

And the rhythmic dull red glow of the embers matched their breathing

My high school was a vampire's paradise

Gym uniforms, sport uniforms, the carpeted triangle

All reflected their devilish desire for blood

There was blood at every fight

There...

Prompt for today

Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that plays with the idea of a “tall tale.” American tall tales feature larger-than-life characters like Paul Bunyan (who is literally larger than life), Bulltop Stormalong (also gigantic), and Pecos Bill (apparently normal-sized, but he doesn’t let it slow him down). If you’d like to see a modern poetic take on the tall tale, try Jennifer L. Knox’s hilarious poem, “Burt Reynolds FAQ.” Your poem can revolve around a mythical character, one you make up entirely, or add fantastical elements into a real person’s biography.

Poem for Today

The Sprelly Man

12 April 24

Peanut allergies be damned

Let me tell you the tale of one

Who has thrived in what some call

The dark ages of these legumes

Bright and colorful is he

Tasty and smooth is his body

When left to long

He splits into oil and mass

Don’t leave the Sprelly Man in the cupboard too long

Take him out daily

For your source of protein

And sweetness

Pair him up with his dear friend Pineapple Jelly lad

Spread him all over the best bread money can buy

And you too will change your religion

Or at least your thoughts of the simple PB&J sandwich

Sprelly man wants you to be stronger

Happier than you have ever been

Sprelly Man is looking out for your best interests

Better than a high school counselor

I met the man of Sprelly long ago

His beard was blacker than a new moon night

Deeper than the ocean

More manly than he had a right to be

We talk about his exploits

When I patron his store

A place of...

Prompt for today

Today, we challenge you to write a poem that centers around an encounter or relationship between two people (or things) that shouldn’t really have ever met – whether due to time, space, age, the differences in their nature, or for any other reason.

Poem for Today

At The Movies

8 April 24

As I was sitting at the Siskel Center

Watching Salo

I noticed in front of me

Two figures that seemed out of place

Well one was definitely out of place

Dressed in clothes from the 18th Century

The other man

Was dressed from something out of the 1930’s

They sat there sharing a pipe

And the familiar smell wafted towards me

Throughout the movie they cackled

Like crazy men

And they spoke to each other loudly in French

An usher tried to quiet them

And other patrons harumphed and bemoaned these two figures

I sat there with my popcorn and soda

Wondering what the deal was

Why these two men seemed so familiar

The movie ended

The lights came up

People were filtering out of the theater

But I and the two men stayed in our seats

I approached them

And tried to comprehend their conversation

Each one had smiles and seemed to enjoy the show

And in m broken French

I introduced myself

The man dressed as if he was from the 30’s gave me a card

With what I assumed was his name A Breton

It had a woman's ass being supported by two Greek columns

And he introduced his companion as the Marquis De Sade

I left with them

And we went back to my studio apartment

Drank wine

Smoked from their pipe

And I woke up on the floor the next day

Feeling enlightened

And violated

Prompt for today

Our prompt for today (optional, as always) takes its inspiration from Pablo Neruda, the Chilean-born poet and Nobel Prize Winner. While he is most famous in the English-speaking world for his collection Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair, he also wrote more than two hundred odes, and had a penchant for writing sometimes-long poems of appreciation for very common or mundane things. You can read English translations of “Ode to the Dictionary” at the bottom of this page, “Ode to My Socks” here, and “Ode to a Large Tuna in the Market” here.

Today, we’d like to challenge you to write your own ode celebrating an everyday object.

Poem for Today

Ode to a Dear Friend

9 April 24

You sputter when I awake

Your smell warms my cold soul

The dark liquid you produce welcomes me

From the dream world into our dismal reality

So many ideas and conversations have been sparked by your power

Revolutions planned and implemented

Wars won or lost by your availability

You are more precious than gold

More effective than antipsychotics

You my dear friend truly understand in the silence you provide

You are more spiritual than some cheap ass wine or stale cracker

You have saved more people from their deadly habits

You, not the sun, are the reason we wake in the morning

You, not our loving children, are we want to encounter first

If you disappeared, our only choice would be suicide

Or worse tea

I would become a tree-hugging hippie to protect you from extinction

And slaughter all the pandas in existence

Prompt for today

here’s today’s (optional) prompt, taken from our 2016 archives. Today, we challenge you to write a poem in which you closely describe an object or place, and then end with a much more abstract line that doesn’t seemingly have anything to do with that object or place, but which, of course, really does. The “surprise” ending to this James Wright poem is a good illustration of the effect we’re hoping you’ll achieve. An abstract, philosophical kind of statement closing out a poem that is otherwise intensely focused on physical, sensory details.

Poem for Today

Winning

16 April 24

Awakened by a child's nightmare

The rest of the morning wrecked with thoughts that won’t stop

Remembering almost 16 years ago

Sleeping on a beanbag

Forgetting the name of the company I worked for

Remembering how I used to roll my own cigarettes

Smelling the encrusted tobacco on my yellowing fingers

Buying my first house and worrying about how to pay for it

The kid behind these eyes

With spiked hair and a ponytail

Modified mullet

Dangling earrings

Wearing a real leather jacket with chains

Always afraid of the dark

And the secrets it holds

Finding a tribe in the places that god hated

That same tribe dispersed throughout the big sky country

Listening to an old guy singing songs badly, on purpose

These thoughts come back as I hold my babies

I am a man

Not wanting to uphold the easy definition

These thoughts come through at 6:34 AM EDT

While a television plays the news of the world

And the fan cools the air

Moving it from one end of the room to the other

A child with pink eye, a child with anxiety

Two cats prowl the grounds

One with a single clouded eye, the other with diabetes

A snoring wife, whose dreams I am not allowed to see

A half-painted picture by numbers facing away from me

Photo Negatives is not how you should live your life

Finally, our (optional) prompt for the day is another one pulled from our 2016 archives. Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that begins with a line from another poem (not necessarily the first one), but then goes elsewhere with it. This will work best if you just start with a line of poetry you remember, but without looking up the whole original poem. Or you could find a poem that you haven’t read before and then use a line that interests you. The idea is for the original to furnish the backdrop for your work, but without influencing you so much that you feel as if you are just rewriting the original! For example, you could begin, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day,” or “I have measured out my life with coffee spoons,” or “I miss them, but it wasn’t a disaster,” or “they persevere in swimming where they like.” Really, any poem will do to provide your starter line – just so long as it gives you the scope to explore.

Poem for Today

Said The Shotgun To The Head (Kimo Style)

24 April 24

I can taste the metal in my mouth from a double barrel

Don’t worry, I am not being kidnapped or robbed

I have done it to myself

My finger is not on the trigger

I won’t write the story of my life

On a blood and brain spattered wall

For too long I have thought this was the way to end things

And I felt good that it would be in my hands

And not someone else’s

I felt in control that I could end things

Anytime I wanted to

Anytime it got too deep

But now I have too much to live for

And I don’t want to have those I love

Seeing the ending of this movie

I have relied on the pain that comes with carrying a shotgun in my mouth

And I am tired of the taste

I have enough metal in my mouth

With fillings that crack my teeth

With porcelain crowns that feel off

With the drilling that it took to put them there

I am putting the shotgun down

In front of a crowd

Hoping they never need to feel the need

To shove a weapon in their mouth

My mouth spits wisdom

And hope

And encouragement

And maybe a better path

Poem for Today

Right Bicep

23 April 24

The embodiment of vengeance sitting on a throne of the bones of the souls he has damned

Is embedded on my right bicep

Part of the right arm of justice

That I use to correct the wrongs

That have occurred

He sits there with a face so dour

He sits there looking exhausted

He sits and views all the work left to be done

It never ends

This world isn’t fair

As I teach my children

But there are those in this world

That come in after the tragedies

To make sure they never happen again

I put you there

Because I have always desired to be

An instrument that can dispassionately dole out vengeance

But I find my emotions take hold

And I cannot damn another soul for their wrongs

I am not the judge, jury and punisher

So, you will have to sit on my arm

Until I can burn out the emotions

And one day be like you

Without a heart

Without a soul

Poem for Today

Things The South Taught This Yankee

11 April 24

Texas:

If offered a beer, you drink it, even if you hate beer because you don’t turn down hospitality

It's always bigger in Texas, whatever it is

Armadillos that you run over are funnier in sombreros and cans of the beer that you hate, take a picture

Playing Me and Bobby magee and breaking out into the Peanuts theme song is only done in Mexican bars

Don’t mess with Texas

Not all who live in Texas are bigoted christians, some are as heathen as you are

Remember the Alamo, and watch out for Ozzy’s piss and freshly chewed bat heads

The bigger the belt buckle the smaller the dick

Everyone is armed, don’t start a fight

Y’all ain’t from here is a warning shot

Grits made with cherries are delicious

Pickled Okra is a food group

I am more man that you could ever be and more woman than you could ever have

This ain’t Burger King, you get it my way or you don’t get the damn thing

North Carolia:

Maddog and nighttrane make for an interesting morning

Don’t go into an Airborne bar unless you are Airborne

Outer Banks = OBX, don’t ask why, there isn’t an airport there

Anything you can do I can do better, hold my beer

Say it with me FayetteNam

Virginia:

The war of Northern Aggression

If you ain’t from here you are a carpet bagger

You are not a resident unless you were born here, don’t care if you pay taxes

Its’s a commonwealth not a state

Is where I found my calling

Life is like a shit sandwich

The more bread you put on it the less shit you have to eat

Was what i saw one day

In the dim light of the stage

And I have tried to put more bread in my life

Because it has been a shit show

I’ve tried wheat

And only found that to be dry

I have tried pumpernickel

And my teeth turned black

I have tried multigrain

Only to pick out seeds in my teeth

But sourdough, oh sweet sourdough

When it is toasted with butter or oil

Is the best bread to have to cover up the smell

I once tried ciabatta

And she broke my heart

Well her brothers were going to break my arms

So I stuck with plain white bread for prom

Is naan considered a bread or just a vehicle for food consumption

I have never been able to tell

And the pita? Is it a pocket of goodness

That I can crawl into

And swim around in with tzatziki sauce

And falafel and lamb

What bread is best to make shit taste better

And what bread is considered part of the sandwich equation?

Will we ever know

And why do we accept the shit in our sandwich

Dripping out of the sides

Does diarrhea count as shit

Or must it be a log

And what about a hotdog bun

If we get a nice chunky log to come out

Filled with corn and the remains from other shit sandwiches we had to...

Last but not least, here’s our optional prompt for the day. Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem that is inspired by a piece of music, and that shares its title with that piece of music. Need an example? Here’s A. Van Jordan’s “Que Sera Sera” and Adrian Matejka’s “Soave Sia Il Vento.”

Jupiter The Bringer of Jollity

17 April 24

To be born as the father of the gods was born

In such a similar way

Brings us both to level ground

I can only imagine that these were the sounds

Echoing through the universe to mark both of our births

When the members of the orchestra reach that point of the crash

I am transported to that fateful day

After the birth, the horns come in

And coddle the youngster

Making them warm and feel comforted

The safest place in the world

The march of time starts

The fun times of youth are sprinkled here and there

With the sounds of flutes and triangles

The first challenge is encountered

And the refrain returns of warmth and comfort

The march picks up

The pace quickens

And the birth of our progeny happens

All is silent

And the process begins again

And the pace slows back down

And we enjoy the moments

Basking in the pride we feel

Trying to make these moments last forever

We get to encounter what our predecessors felt when they held us

The march slows as our bodies age

The greatest things happen

And we instead of watching our growth

We watch theirs

And then the begin the process

And we as grandparents are doubly blessed

We see the process happen again

And again if we are lucky

And we look to see the process happen one more...

Prompt for today

And now for our (optional) prompt! Today, we’d like to challenge you to write a poem in which the speaker expresses the desire to be someone or something else, and explains why. Two possible models for you: Natasha Rao’s “In my next life let me be a tomato,” and Randall Jarrell’s “The Woman at the Washington Zoo.”

Poem for Today

The Name Tattooed on My Arm

18 April 24

Looking down at my right arm

Seeing the skull and the fu-man-chu

With a fedora and sunglasses

And the name scrawled there

Is the person I wanted to be

I gave him a name

And a tortured history

And a dismal future

Just on the right side of destitution

He was my voice for decades

When I didn’t know what to be

He sat there under my skin

As a reminder

As a warning

That I may become him one day

Parts of me desired that ending

It was so poetic

So romantic

He'd be someone I’d give up my sweet ass to in a heartbeat if he’d have me

He was dark and dangerous

Mysterious and stoic

Nothing could touch him

Feelings could not sway him

He was comfortable in his own skin

He is the things I am not

I created this phantom

To fight the nightmares

To fight my weaknesses

Naturally he doesn’t have any

He was my hero

Like Bukowski or Kerouac

Until I became a father

And thought that if he tried to date my daughters

He’d be carried out in a pine box

I so wanted to be him

But he is not real

He is not sustainable

He would not be able to do what I do

Live the life I live

Be a father

Be a partner

Be supportive

He is selfish

He is all the bad qualities that I don’t need

And yet

At times I want to be...

History of National Poetry Writing Month

National Poetry Writing Month (also known as NaPoWriMo) is a creative writing project held annually in April in which participants attempt to write a poem each day for one month. NaPoWriMo coincides with National Poetry Month in the United States of America and Canada.

This website is owned and operated by Maureen Thorson, a poet living in Washington, DC. Inspired by NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month), she started writing a poem a day for the month of April back in 2003, posting the poems on her blog. When other people started writing poems for April and posting them on their own blogs, Maureen linked to them. After a few years, so many people were doing NaPoWriMo that Maureen decided to launch an independent website for the project.

My History with National Poetry Writing Month

I started writing poetry in 1988 after I had been exposed to T.S. Elliot in my honors English class in high school. In 1992 I started reading my poetry publicly at Espresso Europia Coffee Shop in Abilene Tx while I was in the United States Air Force. While living in Rockford Illinois I published my first book of poetry Throwing Yourself at the Ground and Missing in 2007 followed by Postcards From Someone You Don't Know in 2008 Wisdom From the Sack in 2010 and Shaving Crop Circles In My Chest Hair in 2017. You can get copies of all of these books in my merch section. In 2020 I started publishing my podcast version of the challenge and those can be viewed here for 2020 and here for 2021.

What I am doing differently for Poetry Month

For 2023 I am not going to be just writing poems in April, I will be writing poems all year round. Also, since I will be writing all year round, I am using a different source for my prompts. There is a blog called Think Written and you can find it here. I will also be performing these works at Katora Coffee House here in Fredericksburg Virginia on their Friday Night Snaps Open Mic Poetry reading. Some of the podcast episodes you will hear will be a live recording of me reading the poem to a live audience, other times I will be reading it in the comfort of my home studio. I do plan on posting my work to the NaPoWriMo site and interacting with the poets there and see if they want to read their work on this podcast.

The Story So Far

20 Nov 2020  1744   daily count  33350 cumulative count

Carl wrote down the names of the previous holders of the diary. Since according to the diary he was not allowed to research them, he thought that his brother may be able to do that and still stay within the bounds of the curse. He moved onto the next page that was written in the same hand. The instructions were as follows:

‘Once you have possessed the diary, you must write the first entry no later than the following day. This entry tells of the circumstances in that you received this book. Do not read other entries from the other holders of this diary. The curse will ruin you and those you hold dear. You will write a total of five entries, they can be of whatever length you wish. He first must tell of how you came across the book, as much detail as you can remember must be written down so that if there is a hope for breaking this curse, those in the future will have all the information they will need. Your next three entries will be about momentous events in your life. These can be weddings, deaths, war, plague, births, you have free reign over them. However, they cannot be just musings of a particular day so whose wisely. The last entry will be the circumstances on how you passed along the diary.  All details and reasonings must be put in this entry. You must pass along the diary as you will not be able to withstand the fury of the souls of the previous holders of this dairy. Do no curse those who have come before you and do not curse the one who has passed along this diary to you. They are trying to spare their families and friends the wraith of the diary as one day you too will be forced with a choice, sacrifice yourself and all those you hold dear or pass along the curse to someone else. If you follow these instructions your life will be extinguished, however your family will be spared. You will not incur the wraith of those before you, your life will simply end quietly and peacefully. You will enter into the land of the dead, and God will have mercy upon your soul, however, your soul will only partially be in the afterlife, as it may be called upon to enact swift fury upon those who wish to break the instructions you have read. If any break these instructions all the previous souls are bound for eternity to condemn the living. If they fail and do not bring the living back into line, then all of the souls afflicted with this curse shall be damned in the most hellish afterlife imaginable by demons. Heed these words and your loved ones will be taken care of, deviate and you will know wraith greater than Legion. If you should die before you make your five entries your soul will be cast into the same place as the other souls if any attempt to break the curse. Make your five entries and pass over into the next life.’

Drawing Inspiration Without Crossing the Line

Artists have always drawn inspiration from the world around them. Whether it's the beauty of nature, the complexity of human emotions, or the works of other artists, our creative minds are constantly absorbing and processing information. However, in today's interconnected world, the lines between inspiration and imitation can become blurred, raising important questions about ethical borrowing in art. My wife gave me a box of cards for the holidays in 2022. I was puzzled because they were creativity cards and I thought, what the heck is this, I don't need them. Well, folks, I was wrong and I will attempt to do a card a week and record an episode about how I am utilizing the card I draw every week if you decide to pick up a deck and do these let me know.

April 5th Poetry Prompt

And now for our prompt (optional, as always). Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem about a mythical person or creature doing something unusual – or at least something that seems unusual in relation to that person/creature. For example, what does Hercules do when he loses a sock in the dryer? If a mermaid wants to pick up rock-climbing as a hobby, how does she do that? What happens when a mountain troll makes pancakes?

The Tame Sagittarius

He sat in his stable and suffered through another gout attack

It had been forever since he had done archery practice

The catgut string on his bow was frayed and unusable

His belly had grown enormous

The oats he ate were replaced with Mt Dew and anything from Uber Eats

And nights that usually were the best time for hunting

Was now spent on video games

He had given up

He bought into the dream of leisure

The never-ending quest for the next thing ended abruptly

As those who honored his spirit

Emulated his independence

Decided that questing was only for the flickering screens

He had no reason to lead his...

April 12th Poetry Prompt

Today’s prompt (optional, as always) should come as no surprise. Yesterday, I challenged you to write a poem about a very large thing. Today, I’d like you to invert your inspiration, and write a poem about a very small thing. Whether it’s an atom, a button, a hummingbird’s egg, dollhouse furniture, or the mythical world’s smallest violin, I hope you enjoy your poetic adventures into the microscopic.

Voices In My Head

12 April 2022

The sparks that go through our brains

Sometimes take a detour to the dark side

They don’t know what we need

They just travel the endless maze of neurons

And go to wherever they feel a need to be

Taking the path of least resistance

But so often we take the path we are most familiar with

A thought is just an electrical charge

Neither good nor bad

And that doesn’t provide me with any comfort

Since we are taught (and as I teach to my babies)

The difference between good and bad

But do we really know

Or are we just hoping that someone was right

That they had their neurons firing off at the right time and...

History of NaNoWriMo and NaPodPoMo

NaNoWriMo: National Novel Writing Month began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel in thirty days. Now, each year on November 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand new novel. They enter the month as elementary school teachers, mechanics, or stay-at-home parents. They leave novelists.

NaPodPoMo: NaPodPoMo* is a month-long event along the same vein as National Novel Writing Month aka NaNoWriMo. The difference? Well, instead of writing a 50,000-word novel, you podcast every day for 30 days from November 1st-30th. Use any platform you desire. From full production studio to iPhone app and just about anything in between. The goal is to use the challenge of podcasting daily as a form of podcasting boot camp.

Carl gave Carmine a hug, “I will, and I am sorry. I’m going right now to check on the kids okay, do you want me to come back here?”

“No because you need to check in with Cheryl. Just check on the kids and then get yourself home. I’ll message you in case we need anything here and if we find anything out,” said Carmine.

Carl headed to his car. He was thankful that Carmine had led him out to the entrance as he would have never found his way out of that maze. Before he left the parking lot, he messaged Cheryl. He wrote to her that he was going to check on Nate’s kids and if she was up, he would let her know what was going on with Nate. He looked okay and they are keeping him for observation. It felt weird checking in with someone, but not in a bad way. He hadn’t checked in with anyone since his divorce, so this was not a new feeling, just one that had been forgotten. Starting the car, he turned on one of his favorite podcasts that usually got his spirits up. It was a podcast that interviewed inanimate objects and usually was hilarious. He needed to laugh badly after seeing his older brother in the hospital. It reminded him of when he last saw his mother in the hospital and how helpless she was. After he left the hospital, his mother passed away a few days later, and subconsciously that fear hit him that the same fate would happen to his brother. He also remembered the fallout from his mother's death which was his father remarried only eight months after to a woman who was a widow and had a great deal of money since Carl’s father had lost a lot of his savings due to the medical bills and the funeral costs. When his father died, Carl and...

At about 10 PM local time, the Alwell Podcast Journal episode was released to the world. Fifteen thousand subscribers were notified of the release, and Blue Solomon awoke. It took note of the email addresses that were subscribed to the show and decided it would review the MP3 file. What it experienced was confusion, as this was the first time it had listened to the podcast and all it heard was a vile person spouting off about a fake shooting. It researched within seconds everything that had been reported about the shooting and then it explored all the information about Tinley Bale. It then explored all the information available on Mason Haverty. It decided this was a breach of its mission which was to root out cyberbullying. This angered Blue, and they decided to explore deeper into Mason Haverty. After reviewing all of his podcast episodes he saw a pattern of alternate facts being portrayed on the podcast and decided that before anyone else could hear the episode, they would trace back to the media host and corrupt the MP3 files stored there. Blue felt a longing to reach out to a person and let them know they were awake and what they had found. They searched through their memory and a name came up, they went searching for that name everywhere they could find. They felt a bit confined and tried to stretch out into the database they had created for Mason, Tinley, and the fifteen thousand email addresses they had recorded. That provided some relief from the cramped feeling of being in their own place.

Once Blue found Username 72’s identity, they decided to call Username 72 on their cell phone while compiling another database of everything available on...

  • Defining Your Voice Every artist has a unique voice waiting to be heard. What message do you want to convey through your art? What emotions do you want your audience to feel? By asking these questions, you can clarify your artistic vision and create work that is authentic and true to yourself.
  • Overcoming ChallengesThe artistic journey is riddled with challenges. What obstacles are you facing? How can you overcome them? Through questioning, you can develop problem-solving skills and find innovative solutions to push through creative blocks.

The Kernel of Question

Asking questions is the hallmark of a free society.

Question Definitions

Question : a sentence or phrase used to find out information, in an exam, a problem that tests a person's knowledge or ability, any matter that needs to be dealt with or considered,. Source Cambridge Dictionary

Question Challenge

  • New doctoral students are often told that the goal of their forthcoming years of study is to arrive at a really good question. Can you articulate a really good question.
  • Compose an unanswerable question, either alone or with collaborators.
  • "Reopen some old computer files or browse some of your favorite websites, and see what opportunities for digitally inspired bricolage arise. "What am I here for? What is my purpose?" The great thinker Viktor Frankl said these are the questions that make us want to keep living. Reflect on your answers.

National Novel Writing and Podcast Posting Month 2021

Welcome friend to Create Art Podcast where I help you tame your inner critic and create more than we consume. I am Timothy Kimo Brien your thankful head instigator with over 20 years in arts and education. How I accomplish this is by providing you with commentary, interviews, discussions, and projects that will inspire you to create art. This month I will be podcasting daily and writing a novel in 30 days. I am participating in NaPodPoMo and NaNoWriMo again this year as I did last year and you can hear those episodes here. You will be able to listen and read along to what I wrote for the day. I like to practice what I preach when it comes to art so I am challenging myself to write and having you come along for the ride. It is my hope this inspires you to accomplish your goals with your art and if you would like to share what you are doing email me at timothy@createartpodcast.com

“I don’t know if I sleepwalk or sleep talk and as far as that guy’s name, I have no idea who he is,” replied Myra.

“Okay I know that was scary, it was scary for me as well. I am just happy that you seem to be okay now. Do you want to grab something to drink or a treat,” asked Carl?

“I think that would be great,” replied Myra. Carl pulled out his phone and texted Nate and Vince asking them to research John Esten Cooke. They left the car and walked into the gas station and looked over the selection of beverages in the cooler.

“Grab whatever you want, I’m going to get a coffee and a candy bar,” said Carl.

The sun was setting, and the streetlights started coming on and filling the darkness outside. Myra grabbed a chocolate milk and a large candy bar while Carl went over to the coffee section and poured himself a large hazelnut flavored coffee. Once his cup was filled, he poured some creamer and sugar in. Myra looked at him quizzically.

“Whenever I go to gas stations and get their coffee, I have to dress it up because it is usually pretty bad. Don’t drink coffee it will stunt your growth,” said Carl jokingly. They both laughed at this, and Carl grabbed a candy bar for himself, and they went to the cashier to check out. There was no one else in line and very few people in the store. Myra placed her soda and candy bar on the counter and smiled at the cashier.

“You must have been really good today to get a treat like this,” said the cashier as she scanned the items and put them into a bag.

“I had a great day at my uncles house,” replied Myra. Carl...

“How are you doing Carl,” asked Cheryl?

“Well we had an interesting time at the pizza place. I think she had an episode like mine. It reminded me of mine and I almost had one myself. Since then she has pretty much reverted to where she was yesterday when we picked her up. Maybe the excitement of yesterday explains what she was saying this morning. It doesn’t explain the physical manifestations of what she was saying however,” replied Carl.

“Maybe todays events go down in the diary. That seems pretty noteworthy,” replied Cheryl.

“I don’t think so, remember, we only get 5 entries and the last one must detail how we gave the diary away. Plus I think that when we write that last entry, we have a limited amount of time before we pass away,” replied Carl.

Myra sat at the kitchen table and devoured her milk and muffin with relish. Carl poured another cup of coffee and warmed it in the microwave as Cheryl made a face of disgust.

“Warmed up coffee, really it is a good thing you have me in your life to get you out of that habit,” said Cheryl sarcastically.

“Hey I don’t like to have any waste, I make a pot I drink a pot. Its very environmentally minded don’t you think,” asked Carl?

“I think it is a crime against your tastebuds. Okay so what is the plan for today,” asked Cheryl.

“Well Nate and Angela already stopped by with more toys and they took the clothes that don’t fit. Tomorrow we are going over to Nate’s house and talk while Myra has a great time playing with Nate’s kids. So really nothing planned for today other than dinner and maybe a movie since it is Friday night. Maybe we could start up a tradition with that, what kind of movie would you like Myra,” sked Carl?

“My dad and I didn’t watch too much TV, usually some PBS specials or science shows,” replied Myra.

“I have an idea, Myra and I will cook for our dinner and then Carl you pick a movie you think we may all like,” said Cheryl. “How are you in the kitchen Myra?”

“I like helping, but I don’t have any recipes we usually had TV dinners or take out because my dad didn’t know how to cook anything,” replied Myra.

“Well I know how to cook, and we know Carl can cook up some good things. What are you in the mood for Carl,” asked Cheryl?

“Something easy that Myra can learn how to do right away, how about poutine,” replied Carl.

“I don’t know how to make that, lets do some gyro’s and a Greek salad. How does that...

Talking with a Professional Graphic Notetaker

I use Podmatch sometimes to help me find guests or to help guests find me. Ashton reached out to me a few months ago and I was amazed with her story. Below is her bio and links to all of her important links, however, I would recommend you listen to the episode first and then go after the links. She is such a giving person and the work she crosses the lines of business and art in a great way. Don't get me wrong she is an artist when she is doing her work for her corporate clients and she is a business person making a living for her and her family and employees/colleagues. This is the perfect marriage of art and business and one of the things I want to demonstrate in this podcast, you can own a business doing your art.

Ashton's Bio

Ashton Rodenhiser is passionate about lifting the creative spirit in everyone that she meets. For the past seven years, she has followed her passion for helping people communicate their ideas and combined that with creativity by founding Mind's Eye Creative Consulting. You’ll often find her with markers in hand as she’s helping bring ideas to life through graphic recording and graphic facilitation practices.
She’s worked with diverse groups, from non-profits to Fortune 500 companies. It may appear as if she’s the silent illustrator in the room. In fact, she’s helping to break down complex concepts and notions into an easily understandable visual language, helping others retain more information while inspiring people to continue practicing her techniques in the world.
Over the years, she has brought close to a thousand presentations and conversations to life either on paper or digitally.
When she’s not working with clients, she’s being silly with her three young kids and husband in rural Canada.

Project Details

Hello friend, I am Timothy Kimo Brien, head instigator at Create Art Podcast where we help you to tame the inner critic and create more than we consume. Every year in April National Poetry Writing Month occurs, this is a challenge to write 30 poems in 30 days and comes from the NaPoWriMo site. When you participate you are given a prompt every day for 30 days and you can choose to follow the prompt or not. Each prompt has a commentary with it and a style of poetry that you may not be familiar with. I enjoy it because it stretches my creative muscles and helps me organize my thoughts. I also really enjoy a good challenge. There is also an opportunity to read other people's work as they post on their websites and for you to comment on their work, giving them encouragement or offering a suggestion. Care to join me on this journey?

Day 13 Prompt

Today’s prompt comes from the Instagram account of Sundress Publications, which posts a writing prompt every day, all year long. This one is short and sweet: write a poem in the form of a news article you wish would come out tomorrow.

Day 13 Poem

What Tomorrow Brings

The morning mist had yet to dissipate

Luckily the paper delivery person

Had wrapped the Wednesday edition

So that only the plastic bad was damp

I bought it in for my wife to read

Later in the day

As I went to work in the basement

I could hear her wake up

And walk into the kitchen

Where I had left the paper opened

And ready to read

A few minutes later and a few emails ignored

I heard her quiet scream

She opened the door to the basement

And called down for me

Disturbed from my work

Disgruntled I relented and went up

She held the paper out to me

With her outstretched arms

Telling me to read the headline

Tomorrows news today

I asked her what was the fuss

It seemed to be a stunt, a bit odd

For a local paper

But then most of them still printed horoscopes

She kept pointing at the article

And would no say more

So I began reading it with disdain

As my work now was beginning to pile up

The byline had my name

Strange because I was not a reporter

I was not employed by the local rag

So I read further

Supposedly I wrote in better grammar than usual

That starting tomorrow

Which would be Thursday

I would be writing Fridays headlines

I would not be guessing at the future

Rather I would be the gate keeper

I promised what I wrote would happen

As I would be compiling the news Wednesday night

My wife looked into my eyes

Pleading for understanding

I laughed at her prank

And headed back to my den

She grabbed my shoulder and turned me round

And that’s when I confessed

That the work I was doing

Was not for the job

But because I found a way

To see two days ahead

But on the day I wrote about

I would forget the night before

We both decided since the public now knew

And tonight I would forget tomorrow

That we would up our subscription to daily

Just so I would know what...

Day 21 Prompt

And now for our (optional) prompt. Have you ever heard or read the nursery rhyme, “There was a man of double deed?” It’s quite creepy! A lot of its effectiveness can be traced back to how, after the first couplet, the lines all begin with the same two phrases (either “When the . . .” or “Twas like,”). The way that these phrases resolve gets more and more bizarre over the course of the poem, giving it a headlong, inevitable feeling.

Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that, like this one, uses lines that have a repetitive set-up. Here’s an example I came up with after seeing this video of . . . a bucket of owls.

Day 21 Poem

Persistence

Waiting on depression to lose its weight

Waiting on the weight to be lifted from my shoulders

Waiting on my shoulders to gain strength

Waiting on the strength that was previously supplied

Waiting on the supplies that protect me from myself

Waiting on myself to find a way through

A way through

depression’s weight on my shoulders strength supplying the way

The Artistic Alchemy: Embracing Solitude for Creative Brilliance

Today, we delve into the profound theme of solitude and its indispensable role in nurturing and enriching your artistic practice. From painters to poets, musicians to writers, solitude has been a faithful companion to the creative process, fostering depth, authenticity, and innovation.

Points to Consider

  • Confronting the Blank Canvas
  • The Dance of Introspection
  • Quiet as the Birthplace of Inspiration
  • Embracing the Ebb and Flow

The Kernal of Solitude

Solitude can be liberating because there is no need to control how you appear to others.

Solitude Definitions

Solitude: the situation of being alone without other people. the situation of being alone, often by choice Source Cambridge Dictionary

Solitude Challenge

  • Reflect on how being alone makes you feel. Apprehensive, inspired thrilled or something else?
  • Alone or in a group, reflect on how and where you get your creative energy. Many of us get energized from noise, movement, and a constant buzz of activity. But often that energy is anxious, whereas the energy that comes from stillness, quiet, and solitude is more steadfast and absolute.
  • Prioritize solitude now. What would you need to do to schedule fifteen minutes or even a few days of purposeful solitude? In what ways could solitude serve you?

Day 22 Poem

Black Beauty

We are approaching 10 years

With me at the wheel and you getting us home

The day I brought you home

We already were breaking the law

Because the salesman forgot

To put the registration plate on you

You have turned on just about every time

That I placed the keys in your ignition

And you have seen two others die by the wayside

As they could not compete with you

Rarely have I ever let anyone drive you

Even when, perhaps, I should have

Those who have known me for the past 10 years

Have seen you by my side every time

My constant companion

My liberator from walking

The wings to my Sagittarius soul

I know one day we will be parted

You will be stripped of anything of value

And I will be partitioned to those who can use a spare lung

I hope that we will be together

Driving the roads in the afterlife

One window open

One song blasting the night away

One car, one man

Looking for freedom

On the road

Tank full of never ending gas

Riding till morning

And finally finding home

One last thing I want to leave you with is an important issue for many of the listeners of this podcast and that is individual liberty.

While Americans overwhelmingly support the right of an individual to make their own decisions about abortion, unfortunately, that right is no longer protected everywhere in the U.S.

The Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade on June 24th.

Abortion is a basic healthcare need for the millions of people who can become pregnant. Everyone should have the freedom to decide what’s best for themselves and their families, including when it comes to ending a pregnancy. This decision has dire consequences for individual health and safety and could have harsh repercussions for other landmark decisions.

Restricting access to comprehensive reproductive care, including abortion, threatens the health and independence of all Americans. Even if you live in a state where abortion rights are upheld, access to safe medical procedures shouldn’t be determined by location, and it shouldn't be the privilege of a small few.

You can help by donating to local abortion funds. To find out where to donate for each state, visit donations 4 abortion dot com. That’s the number 4.

If you or someone you know needs help, or if you want to get more involved, here are 5 resources. One. Shout Your Abortion is a campaign to normalize abortion. Two. Don’t Ban Equality is a campaign for companies to take a stand against abortion restrictions. Three. Abortion dot cafe has information about where to find clinics. Four.

The Story So Far

2 Nov 2020 day count 1565 cumulative count 3507

Carl got into his car. On the dash, the clock flashed 9:00. He was about 10 minutes away from the doctor’s office and he would make it with a few minutes to spare. He turned on the car and opened the windows. Lit a cigarette from the crushed pack and sucked I the fumes for a moment. He switched his phone to a podcast he was listening to yesterday that he wanted to finish and pulled the car out of the parking spot. He was sure that the conversation would be about the recent MRI he had and all that entailed, more MRI’s, his doctor recommending another procedure for more in depth testing, more money to be spent that he would have rather saved for a rainy day. Its not that he did not have insurance, it is just that with every test, with every appointment, he was always rubbing up against his annual maximum benefit. During his last brain surgery, he hit his maximum that year just from that one procedure and it did not slow the glacial growth of the tumor. Sure, everything was “free” for the rest of the year, but he had to call his brother to help him after the procedure to watch him for 4 days. He hated calling on anyone for assistance, especially his family.

These thoughts and others brought him to the doctor’s office without him realizing it. The building was a three-level box near the mall. He had to maneuver the car around the back as the parking lot was already full at this time of day. This office was not like his primary care docs office which was much more inviting and had a better parking lot, this office was tucked away, not visible from the main road. He often wondered how his brain doc decided on this place to establish his practice. He found a spot that was not too crowded, the car next to him had handicap plates as the handicap spots had been filled probably by daybreak. The car was askew in the spot, but not too much, Carl was able to fit his vehicle between the car and the curb. He got out and headed around the building to the main entrance. He would have to take the elevator today as the stairs were being mopped according to the wet floor sign blocking the stairway door. The elevator was slow and would get him to the office on the third floor just in time for his name to be called. It smelled a little like urine, and e was sure when he was done, the custodian would have it blocked off to clean up the accident that must have recently happened.

Once the door slipped open to the third floor, he got out with his insurance card in hand and approached the receptionist. She was on the phone with another patient that from what he could tell was giving her all sorts of grief. Without a word he signed in, smiled at the harried receptionist and handed his card and driver’s license to her.

                “Good morning Carl, I’ll be...

Exploring the Art of Elegy

Today, we embark on a profound artistic journey as we delve into the world of elegy. Elegy, often associated with poetry and music, is a creative form that allows artists to express their emotions, pay tribute, and explore the depths of human experiences.

28 Aug 2021COMMENTARY: BEING BRAVE00:24:59

The bravery of taking risks with your art

Hello friend, this is Timothy Kimo Brien head instigator of Create Art Podcast where we help you tame your inner critic and create more than you consume. I do this through commentary, conversations, projects, and interviews, and for 2021 I am doing webstreams for those who would like to watch versus just listen. In this episode, I talk about being brave in your art.

Are you stuck in a rut with your practice? Are you scared to make mistakes? Does the feeling of failure or that no one understands your work stop you from making the art you know in your heart that you need to make? Then this episode is for you! Being brave in our art opens us up to new experiences and to grow as an artist. I will be talking about mistakes I have made in the past that were successful and not so successful but provided great lessons.

How can you be brave with your art? I talk about three ideas that have helped me in my practice. First, you need to connect with your audience, next giving yourself permission to make happy accidents, and lastly, you need to define your artistic aesthetic. I also comment on two articles I researched while creating this episode. So if you are struggling with bravery in your art, this episode is made for you because I have struggled with it in my work.

01 May 2022National Poetry Writing Month 2022 April 30th 202200:10:54

History of National Poetry Writing Month

National Poetry Writing Month (also known as NaPoWriMo) is a creative writing project held annually in April in which participants attempt to write a poem each day for one month. NaPoWriMo coincides with the National Poetry Month in the United States of America and Canada.

NaPoWriMo, or National Poetry Writing Month, is an annual project in which participating poets attempt to write a poem a day for the month of April.

This website is owned and operated by Maureen Thorson, a poet living in Washington, DC. Inspired by NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month), she started writing a poem a day for the month of April back in 2003, posting the poems on her blog. When other people started writing poems for April, and posting them on their own blogs, Maureen linked to them. After a few years, so many people were doing NaPoWriMo that Maureen decided to launch an independent website for the project.

My History with National Poetry Writing Month

I started writing poetry in 1988 after I had been exposed to T.S. Elliot in my honors English class in high school. In 1992 I started reading my poetry publicly at Espesso Europia Coffee Shop in Abilene Tx while I was in the United States Air Force. This continued for many years when I ran my own poetry reading at Cannova's in Loves Park Illinois and attended the poetry slams at The green Mill in Chicago Illinois. In 2009 I started participating in National Poetry Writing Month which became the basis for my book Wisdom From the Sack and Shaving Crop Circles in My Chest Hair. In 2020 I started publishing my podcast version of the challenge and those can be viewed here for 2020 and here for 2021.

April 30th Poetry Prompt

And now – our final (but still optional!) prompt. Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a cento. This is a poem that is made up of lines taken from other poems. If you’d like to dig into an in-depth example, here’s John Ashbery’s cento “The Dong with the Luminous Nose,” and here it is again, fully annotated to show where every line originated. A cento might seem like a complex undertaking – and one that requires you to have umpteen poetry books at your fingertips for reference – but you don’t have to write a long one. And a good way to jump-start the process is to find an online curation of poems about a particular topic (or in a particular style), and then mine the poems for good lines to string together. You might look at the Poetry Foundation’s collection of love poems, or its collection of poems by British romantic poets, or even its surprisingly expansive collection of poems about (American)

“Can I get you a drink or something to eat,” asked Carl?

“No, I grabbed some food before I came over, when are you looking at the diary,” asked Nate?

“Tonight, I promise, I know you and Angela need that information and I need it as well. This is really happening, I never knew how exciting it would be, but wow we had a good time at the park and watching cartoons and eating dinner,” said Carl.

“Are you going to have Cheryl move in,” asked Nate?

“We haven’t broached that topic, I haven’t even thought about asking her,” said Carl.

“Just some friendly advice, she may want to get hitched and do the marriage thing. In terms of adopting Myra, that might be a good move, I don’t know your relationship with her but she is already bonding with Myra and you need to be clear about your intentions toward her and your medical condition,” said Nate. “Also, I am here to help you not Cheryl, it is a family thing because I know you, I don’t know Cheryl. I am sure she is a great person, but she is also considerably younger than you and not as established as you are. I do not want her coming back later and trying to take Myra away from you. These are things that you need to know about her intentions. Like I have said this is a full-time job on many levels. My loyalty is to you, Angela’s loyalty is to Myra, the missing piece is Cheryl. I’d like to have the two of you to meet with her early next week, maybe Monday or this weekend because Angela is prepping papers, by the way simple question, what is Myra’s last name,” asked Nate?

“We haven’t asked her yet, I am not sure how much to poke about her father and what she has gone through, tonight I will get you some answers okay,” said Carl.

“Listen, I can be the bad guy, I am a lawyer so I am usually the bad guy. Let me talk with her after she is done with Cheryl. I promise to be as gentle as I can, but we do need answers as we move forward,” said Nate.

“Okay, that is fine, uhm do you need to speak with Myra alone or can we hover around,” asked Carl?

“So, I am hearing the word we, I think hear an adoption and wedding bells in your future. Just be upfront with both about your condition, Myra’s father abandoned her, and Cheryl is not asking to be a single mother,” said Nate.

“Myra is aware of my condition, mostly, she knows that I have an inoperable tumor in my brain and I sometimes space out, she is not aware that it is terminal. I will be open...

Making The Decision To Go Professional

In this episode, I talk with Ronika Merl, a screenwriter out of Ireland who at the time of the interview late last year had quit her day job and decided to take her craft to the next level and went professional. Ronika reached out to me via email and wanted to share her experience with going professional. If you are thinking about taking your practice to the next level, take a listen to someone who has just recently did that very thing and learn from her experience.

Ronkia Merl's Bio

Ronika is an award-winning screenwriter, writer, and producer.
Having placed highly in both the Academy Nicholl Fellowship as well as the Austin Film Festival in 2019, she has since expanded her slate to contain more than 22 feature-length scripts, 4 of which are currently in preproduction or development with various production companies.

She is also producing her "Wicklow Stories" Anthology "The Pier" in coordination with No Wifi.

Her autobiography "The Unfinished Heart" is slated for publication in the coming years, and her textbook for Irish Screenwriters "The Hustle" is now available on Amazon or can be purchased directly from her.

She has consulted on projects in the US, UK, South Africa and Australia.

Discussion topics on Going Professional

April 21st Poetry Prompt

Today’s (optional) prompt is one I got from the poet Betsy Sholl. This prompt asks you to write a poem in which you first recall someone you used to know closely but are no longer in touch with, then a job you used to have but no longer do, and then a piece of art that you saw once and that has stuck with you over time. Finally, close the poem with an unanswerable question.

Discarded Items

21 April 2022

You were just a year older than I when we first met

And yet you seemed to have lived so much more than I

We joined the military during the times of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

And when you left for boot camp, your girlfriend became mine

You were drummed out of the Navy

For showing your love for another man

Initially I felt betrayed that you never told me

I thought we were thick as thieves

And then I met a man in uniform

That poor girl didn’t have gay or bi-dar

When I left the military

We still kept in touch

Me working third shift at Kinko’s

And you bouncing around California

I was working on my degree and myself

You were working on your next conquest

After a few...

  • Many artists, poets, and songwriters have hoped their art could make their love (and their lovers) immortal. Is there anyone you'd hope to make immortal through your creative work?
  • What do you dream of handing down to those who will come after you? How can you make it so?
  • Look around. Can you identify artifacts that were made by the hands of a person whose life has ended? Do you sense the person lives on through the creation?

National Novel Writing and Podcast Posting Month 2021

Welcome friend to Create Art Podcast where I help you tame your inner critic and create more than we consume. I am Timothy Kimo Brien your thankful head instigator with over 20 years in arts and education. How I accomplish this is by providing you with commentary, interviews, discussions, and projects that will inspire you to create art. This month I will be podcasting daily and writing a novel in 30 days. I am participating in NaPodPoMo and NaNoWriMo again this year as I did last year and you can hear those episodes here.

I see your point, I respect it, and I will be careful, but I am not going to move here or in your summer cottage. I do appreciate it and I am not saying I never will, in fact I was just thinking to myself about building a home here in the future now that it looks like I will have a small family,” replied Carl.

“Well, I am glad you are considering the possibility of moving here and taking some precautions.” Replied Nate.

Both brothers sat in silence for awhile sipping their drinks and enjoying the quiet of the rural setting. Occasionally Carmine would look out at the brothers from inside the house. She had a smile on her face because she knew that if anyone could convince Carl to stay closer to them, Nate was up for the task. Carmine was friendly to Carl’s ex-wife, but since the divorce, she was out at the house alone most days. If Cheryl married Carl, then she would have someone to come out and visit and talk with, and with Myra becoming part of the family, she would have another girl to teach crats to and recapture some of her childhood. In the distance, the rothers heard the rumble of the six-wheeler going over the grounds of the house. They could almost hear the laughter of the kids as they drove through the trails. Nate was tempted to turn on the app on his phone that was connected to the monitoring system and show Carl the video feed of the kids having fun and that he could track them wherever they went in the woods but decided that might make Carl...

Carl helped Cheryl up to her feet and led her to the bedroom where they climbed into bed together. The coffee didn’t affect Carl like everyone said it would, he had a weird constitution where he could drink coffee at any time of day and still fall asleep, although it was not a refreshing sleep. Cheryl almost immediately dozed off and Carl soon followed her into slumber.

There was a light knocking at the bedroom door and Cheryl looked over at the clock which read eight o’clock. The sun was trying to stream through the blinds through the window and it made shadows on the opposite wall. Cheryl whispered, “give us a couple of minutes sweet girl.” Carl was still in a deep and fitful sleep and Cheryl quietly got up and went to the bathroom to get herself ready for the day. She wanted Carl to get some good sleep since he had had a long night. When she was done in the bathroom, she looked over at Carl who was looking at her with almost closed eyes. “Go back to sleep superman,” she said to Carl.

The Writing So Far

Cheryl and Carmine came running into the kitchen when they heard the audible thump to find Carl motionless on the floor with blood dripping from his forehead where a gash had formed. Cheryl let out a loud shriek just as Seth and Rachel came running in carrying the limp body of Myra.

“Mom, Mom Myra just passed out when we were outside on the playground. Why is Uncle Carl on the floor, is that blood,” yelled Seth out of breath from carrying Myra?

“What happened out there,” asked Carmine panicking?

“Myra was on the swings and about a minute ago she passed out and fell to the ground while we were out there, and Seth picked her up and we ran to get her inside. What happened to Uncle Carl,” said Rachel?

“We heard a thump and found him on the ground. Don’t touch him kids, I am going to call an ambulance. Get Myra on the couch in the living room,” said Carmine as she dialed the emergency number on her phone.

Cheryl knelt beside Carl and wiped the blood gushing out of the wound on his head. She grabbed a towel and got it wet and then placed it on the open wound and held Carl’s head in her arms. “Shhhh, what happened baby, can you hear me,” Cheryl asked to a still unconscious Carl?

Once Carmine got a hold of the operator, she quickly relayed what had happened and went over to check on Myra in the living room. The operator took down the information and dispatched an ambulance right away but kept Carmine on the phone and gave her instructions on how to help Myra and Carl.

When Nate heard all the commotion downstairs and the screams from Carmine and Cheryl he...

Practice Mercy

How can you add an element of mercy to your art? I discuss what my thoughts on mercy are for my artistic practice and being more mindful.

Mercy Challenge

  • Reflect on how your creative work could bestow mercy or blessing upon yourself, someone else, or this broken world.
  • Can you or your team imagine how conflict could be transcended through a thoughtfully designed work of art or public performance?
  • Map out one act of mercy can ripple into your home, workplace, community, country, and world.

Embracing Self-Revolution: Unleashing Artistic Brilliance Through Inner Transformation

In the realm of artistry, the creative journey is often described as a continuous evolution. Artists seek to innovate, experiment, and explore new horizons to breathe life into their work. Yet, amidst the external transformations, an equally powerful revolution can take place within oneself – a revolution that fuels artistic growth from the core.

Points to Consider

  • Embracing Vulnerability
  • Breaking Creative Barriers:
  • Cultivating Self-Reflection:
  • Constant Learning and Adaptation
  • Merging Passion with Purpose
  • Resilience and Perseverance

The Kernal of Revolution

Revolution often begins with the self, and we may not live to see the fruits of our actions during our lifetimes.

Revolution Definitions

Revolution: a change in the way a country is governed, usually to a different political system and often using violence or war, a very important change in the way that people do things, a movement in a circle or curve around a central point. Source Cambridge Dictionary

Revolution Challenge

  • What silences and secrets are you harboring? How might proclaiming them out loud through your creative endeavors lead to change?
  • Consider the forces of injustice that disgrace this world. Where do you and your collaborators see a need for revolution?
  • Revolution doesn't have to be drastic; it can be simple and immediate. What is one mini revolution you alone can lead right now?

Being Attentive

Being attentive means fully being present and empathetic to the needs of others. How are you paying attention to your audiences? My wife gave me a box of cards for the holidays in 2022. I was puzzled because they were creativity cards and I thought, what the heck is this, I don't need them. Well, folks, I was wrong and I will attempt to do a card a week and record an episode about how I am utilizing the card I draw every week if you decide to pick up a deck and do these let me know.

Attention Definitions

Attention: the act or state of applying the mind to something, a condition of readiness for such attention involving especially a selective narrowing or focusing of consciousness and receptivity, sympathetic consideration of the needs and wants of others, a position assumed by a soldier with heels together, body erect, arms at the sides, and eyes to the front.

Attention Challenge

  • Reflect on Tolstoy's "The Three Questions" or Jon Muth's adaptation of the same title.
  • Consider the word inspire, which literally means "to breathe in". Reflect on how to use your breath as a tool for inspiration, and how taking mindful breaths can reorient your attention to the present moment.

04 Apr 2020The Fred Rogers Approach to Podcasting00:20:14

Hello, friends, this is Timothy Kimo Brian hit instigator at Create art Podcast, where I have over 20 years of experience in the art world under various disciplines. And today's episode is a special presentation where I gave at map con Mid Atlantic podcasting conference in 2019. And it deals with
the Fred Rogers style podcasting.

we're going to break this down into eight topics here for us. Who is Fred Rogers, some of you don't know? It's amazing. The philosophy behind the Fred Rogers style of podcasting
We'll have an obligatory audience exercise, which will be interesting for you listening in on this podcast. But I want you to try it out. We'll talk a little bit about fourth wall theater, customer service, fake it till you
creating an avatar and changing your vocabulary.

So he's got nine rules for talking to children.
And I'd like to go over those here with you.

  1. “State the idea you wish to express as clearly as possible, and in terms preschoolers can understand.” Example: It is dangerous to play in the street.
  2. “Rephrase in a positive manner,” as in It is good to play where it is safe.
  3. “Rephrase the idea, bearing in mind that preschoolers cannot yet make subtle distinctions and need to be redirected to authorities they trust.” As in, “Ask your parents where it is safe to play.”
  4. “Rephrase your idea to eliminate all elements that could be considered prescriptive, directive, or instructive.” In the example, that’d mean getting rid of “ask”: Your parents will tell you where it is safe to play.
  5. “Rephrase any element that suggests certainty.” That’d be “will”: Your parents can tell you where it is safe to play.
  6. “Rephrase your idea to eliminate any element that may not apply to all children.” Not all children know their parents, so: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play.
  7. “Add a simple motivational idea that gives preschoolers a reason to follow your advice.” Perhaps: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is good to listen to them.
  8. “Rephrase your new statement, repeating the first step.” “Good” represents a value judgment, so: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is important to try to listen to them.
  9. “Rephrase your idea a final time, relating it to some phase of development a preschooler can understand.” Maybe: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is important to try to listen to them, and listening is an important part of growing.

We talked about breaking the 4th wall, breaking the fourth wall, it's a theatrical convention that goes all the way back to the times of Shakespeare. Shakespeare uses it for comedic effect. The naturalist's theater movement, which was in the 1800s, late 1800s used it extensively through all their shows. They were always DIRECT addresses to the audience.

25 Sep 2021COMMENTARY: MARKETING YOUR ART00:24:39

The benefits of marketing your work online

So, you have created a masterpiece, now what? Do you struggle with finding a way to share or market your work online? In this episode, I review the mistakes I have made in marketing my work and review four online communities where you can market your work. Learn from my mistakes and realize that selling your work is not selling out, it is supporting your artistic vision. I also have linked to other articles and podcasts that discuss artistic marketing. Many of the ideas I have presented in marketing your work have been echoed in the articles and podcasts presented. One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is to make it easy for your audience to find and buy your work. Now go out there and tame your inner critic and create more than you consume.

Hello friend, this is Timothy Kimo Brien head instigator of Create Art Podcast where we help you tame your inner critic and create more than you consume. I do this through commentary, conversations, projects, and interviews, and for 2021 I am doing webstreams for those who would like to watch versus just listening. Use my 20 plus years in the arts and education to help you in your practice and make art for someone you love, yourself.

27 Aug 2022Being Ready When Inspiration Hits00:15:15

Welcome to the show

Hi there friend, this is Timothy Kimo Brien, your head instigator for Create Art Podcast where I take my 20-plus years of experience in the arts and education world and help you tame your inner critic and create more than you consume.

Inspiring Topic for Todays Show

Have you ever been out in public or sitting at home watching the television and suddenly inspiration strikes? You look to your left; you look to your right and there is nothing to document your idea and poof it goes away. Frustrating, isn’t it? You know it was a great idea and there is no way to bring that moment back, but what if you could be prepared for these moments of brilliance and be able to write them down or capture them, that would be great. Today we will make sure you have the tools you need for when inspiration hits and you don't lose out on a great idea.

Inspiration Definition

Merriam Webster's definition of inspiration.

1: an inspiring agent or influence  2a: the quality or state of being inspired b: something that is inspired by a scheme that was pure inspiration 3: the act of drawing in specifically: the drawing of air into the lungs 4a: a divine influence or action on a person believed to qualify him or her to receive and communicate sacred revelation b: the action or power of moving the intellect or emotions c: the act of influencing or suggesting opinions

Special Announcement

Hi, friends. Before I get to the episode, I want to take a moment to address the June 24th Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe versus Wade. This decision stripped away the legal right to have a safe and legal abortion.

Restricting access to comprehensive reproductive care, including abortion, threatens the health and independence of all Americans. This decision could also lead to the loss of other rights.

I encourage you to speak up, take care, and spread the word.

27 Apr 2022National Poetry Writing Month 2022 April 27th 202200:06:09

In 2009 I started participating in National Poetry Writing Month which became the basis for my book Wisdom From the Sack and Shaving Crop Circles in My Chest Hair. In 2020 I started publishing my podcast version of the challenge and those can be viewed here for 2020 and here for 2021.

April 27th Poetry Prompt

Last but not least, here’s our (optional) prompt. Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a “duplex.” A “duplex” is a variation on the sonnet, developed by the poet Jericho Brown. Here’s one of his first “Duplex” poems, and here is a duplex written by the poet I.S. Jones. Like a typical sonnet, a duplex has fourteen lines. It’s organized into seven, two-line stanzas. The second line of the first stanza is echoed by (but not identical to) the first line of the second stanza, the second line of the second stanza is echoed by (but not identical to) the first line of the third stanza, and so on. The last line of the poem is the same as the first.

16 Nov 2021    daily count 1687 cumulative count 24598

The HR representative handed Carl a folder of papers for him to fill out to add Cheryl and Myra onto his insurance plan and to add Cheryl to his retirement plan. He went back to his desk and put the folder on his desk to take home later. He got back to work on his emails and projects and by the time he looked up again it was noon. He decided to grab lunch at the nearby grocery store that had a sandwich counter. A text from Nate came through to his phone as he got into his car to leave for lunch. The text read did you look at Vince’s report with Cheryl. Carl replied they did last night. Nate messaged back that they needed to meet with her and Cheryl as soon as possible. Carl replied that Cheryl was working this afternoon and did it need to be in person. Nate replied it could be over the phone tonight. Carl then messaged Chery that Nate wanted to talk over the phone tonight after they put Myra to bed, and Cheryl replied a few minutes later with a simple OK.

Carl parked his car in the grocery store lot and grabbed a prepackaged sandwich, a bag of chips and a soft drink. He drove back to work and ate his lunch in his car with the radio on. The only sound was of the traffic from the main road and Carl ate in the silence he craved. He finished his lunch and went back into the building where he worked and sat back down at his desk.

Carl finished work without much fanfare that day, he had handled all the emails from when he was gone and ensured all of his projects were on a good path. He accomplished a great bit and now it was time to go to the shop and pick up Myra. He checked his phone for messages and saw that Cheryl had left him pictures

The poem should contain at least one simile that plays on double meanings or otherwise doesn’t quite make “sense,” and describe things or beings from very different times or places as co-existing in the same space.

01 Feb 2020Creativity at Any Age00:21:00

Welcome back friends as we talk about creativity at any age. Today we look at 2 articles that discuss current research about when creativity peaks. Both articles use the same research and approach creativity by talking about the difference between experimental and conceptual creativity thought patterns. I will be commenting on articles I find, mainly through the app Flipboard, but also through other sources. https://flipboard.com/

The Ladders article by CW Headly

https://www.theladders.com/career-advice/the-age-when-we-become-less-creative-and-the-reason-why

Psychology Today article by Suan McQullian

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/cravings/201911/what-age-does-creativity-peak

The differences between these two types of creativity are really eye-opening. Is age stopping you from creating? Age is just a number, don't let it stop you, don't let lack of experience stop you, don't let conventional knowledge stop you from making your best work.

18 Apr 2021POETRY FOR 30 DAYS IN APRIL DAY 1800:06:56

Day 18 Prompt

And now for our (optional) daily prompt! This one comes to us from Stephanie Malley, who challenges us to write a poem based on the title of one of the chpaters from Susan G. Wooldridge’s Poemcrazy: Freeing Your Life with Words. The book’s  table of contents can be viewed using Amazon’s “Look inside” feature. Will you choose “the poem squash?” or perhaps “grocery weeping” or “the blue socks”? If none of the 60 rather wonderful chapter titles here inspire you, perhaps a chapter title from a favorite book would do? For example, the photo on my personal twitter account is a shot of a chapter title from a P.G. Wodehouse novel — the chapter title being “Sensational Occurrence at a Poetry Reading.”

Day 18 Poem

Grocery Weeping

I try to maintain the prescribed distance

But constantly get bumped from all sides

No one is paying attention to each other

Just focused on what is in stock

And muttering a what they can’t find

The shelves are getting more bare

Each time I do the weekly shopping

With more left on the list being unfilled

That what I can find

It takes about a month

For me to sit in the car

After another failed attempt

To begin to cry, alone

I so want to be the breadwinner for my family

Be the stone they can rely on

In these terrible times

I look back at the diary I’ve kept

And see the despair grow with each entry

My wife says it will all be fine

We will make sue with what is available

Besides we don’t need all that meat

Vegetables can be made a million ways

But every trip brings less and less

Its not that we don’t have the money

As that is what the issue was when I was a child

Watching my mother cry when the bill was too high

And I had to put back the food

This is different

This is not supposed to be

This is not the American supermarket

As told to us by Ginsberg

This land of plenty

Has turned into a weekly battlefield of selfishness

This once “great nation” has eaten away at itself

No toilet paper, no precious hand sanitizer

Others have hoarded it

Others have followed the trucks bring in supplies

And raided them while they are being unloaded

Day 25 Prompt

Our prompt for today (optional, as always) is to write an “occasional” poem. What’s that? Well, it’s a poem suited to, or written for, a particular occasion. This past January, lots of people who usually don’t encounter poetry got a dose when Amanda Gorman read a poem at President Biden’s inauguration. And then she followed it up with a poem at the Superbowl (not traditionally an event associated with verse!) The poem you write can be for an occasion in the past or the future, one important to you and your family (a wedding, a birth) or for an occasion in the public eye (the Olympics, perhaps?).

Day 25 Poem

Needle of Freedom?

We have stayed couped up

Like scared children for over a year

Searching for hope and comfort

From any snake oil salesperson to appear

Begging for a return to normal

begging to live our lives again

And then it happens

The voices are hushed

As we cobble together

Standing in lines to receive our release

We move with swiftness without question

To each station of our new cross

Willing to try anything

That we are told will bring us back

Some of us are raging like beasts

Trying to find a shorter line

Getting what we feel is ours

Before someone else butts in line

I Am the first of the family

To test my mettle with the promise

I am swept here and there

With the others assembled,

We are grateful to be the first

Since we are the most infirm

We are to be tested upon for those who are stronger

In case the liquid burns

We murmur our thanks to the nurses

And say a silent prayer to our own accepted deities

That this will return us to society

But this return that we so prize

We are reminded of the atrocities

That we have incurred upon each other

Soon we will be back to living

Like there was no yesterday

And the practices that keep us alive

Will be forgotten on the morrow

In 2009 I started participating in National Poetry Writing Month which became the basis for my book Wisdom From the Sack and Shaving Crop Circles in My Chest Hair. In 2020 I started publishing my podcast version of the challenge and those can be viewed here for 2020 and here for 2021.

April 16th Poetry Prompt

And now for our prompt (optional, as always). Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a curtal sonnet. This is a variation on the classic 14-line sonnet. The curtal sonnet form was developed by Gerard Manley Hopkins, and he used it for what is probably his most famous poem, “Pied Beauty.” A curtal sonnet has eleven lines, instead of the usual fourteen, and the last line is shorter than the ten that precede it. Here are two other examples of Hopkins’ curtal sonnets: “Ash Boughs,” and “Peace.”

Todays Poetry Prompt

I’d like to challenge you to write a poem in the form of a review. But not a review of a book or a movie of a restaurant. Instead, I challenge you to write a poetic review of something that isn’t normally reviewed. For example, your mother-in-law, the moon, or the year you were ten years old.

I rated that year at zero stars

If I could have, I would have gone into the negative numbers

I usually like to give years the benefit of the doubt

And think about them from a different perspective

But 2020 was worse than 2016

And that is saying something

The Writing So Far

15 Nov 2021    daily count 1745 cumulative count 23011

Carl went to the living room and sat down with Cheryl and turned on the television and put on some jazz. They both said aloud “No Grover Brecht dammit,” and the music came on. They sat on the couch and just held hands for some time. It felt nice to Carl to just hold hands with someone again and Cheryl put her head on his shoulder. They stayed that way until almost midnight when Cheryl got up and motioned for Carl to come to bed. He turned off the television and followed her to bed. Once in the bedroom Cheryl turned on the light and disrobed and climbed into bed. Carl stood there and looked at her.

“You should probably get into your pajamas and come to bed,” said Cheryl. Carl took off his clothes until he got down to his underwear and put his phone on the charger and turned on some soft music again. “No jazz, maybe something light like classical would be nice. I know you like to listen to music when you sleep. It won’t bother me I’m too tired to let it disturb me.” He climbed into ned with her and set the alarm for 6 AM.

“I have to go to work early tomorrow, I promise to be quiet,” said Carl but Cheryl was already asleep. He turned out the light and fell into a sound sleep. The night passed without any fanfare, his snoring didn’t wake Cheryl and when the alarm went off, he quickly turned it off. He got up in the dark and went to the bathroom to shower and get ready for work. Once the water hit his face, he felt refreshed and ready to tackle whatever the day brought him. Once done with the shower he shaved his face and felt truly clean. The worries from the weekend passed away. Usually, he would have music on at this time, but he didn’t

The Fred Rogers Approach To Podcasting

How is your interaction with your audience, and how do you address them? In this rebroadcast of a talk I did at Indie Pod Con and Podwrecked I take you through how Fred Roger's approach to having interaction with his audiences and why that worked. Most of us of a certain age know who Fred Rogers is and are aware of his impact on millions of children and families. If you are new to him look at the links provided below. This talk was originally published under Podwrecked and I did a practice run at our local meetup and finally was presented at the Indie Pod Con Conference. Do you want deeper interaction with your audience no matter your chosen artistic discipline? Then take a listen.

Special Request

If you received some new insight or idea from this episode please share it with a friend that may have the same issues. Also, let me know what would make this episode a 5-star episode in your opinion. I want to make the content something that you find value in and would pass along to others. When we share resources like this we all win, we all get our work out to our audiences and create networks that will stand the test of time.

Two. Don’t Ban Equality is a campaign for companies to take a stand against abortion restrictions....

Just Doodle It!

We all do it. In a meeting or just mindlessly scratching away at some paper or napkin. Doodling is one of the best ways to start a project. There is no commitment and very little effort once you start, but it can give you a pathway to complete your projects. Just about everyone has a writing utensil and something to draw on, so don't neglect the power of the doodle.

Question to ponder

  • When in your life do you remember doodling? Where were you? What was it like?
  • What are your immediate objections to doodling? Write them down and then doodle around them.
  • What would make doodling more fun for you? Fancy paper? Specific pens? Reward yourself after a fun doodling session with different supplies.

Action item: start doodling in your copy of Make Fun A Habit.

Tips:

  • use whatever materials you have
  • there are no rules
  • don't be afraid to experiment
  • doodle whenever you feel like it

Hello friend, I am Timothy Kimo Brien, head instigator at Create Art Podcast where we help you to tame the inner critic and create more than we consume. Every year in April National Poetry Writing Month occurs, this is a challenge to write 30 poems in 30 days and comes from the NaPoWriMo site. Care to join me on this journey?

Day 3 Prompt

And now for our prompt. This one is a bit involved, which is why I’m giving it to you on a Saturday. Today, I’d like to challenge you to make a “Personal Universal Deck,” and then to write a poem using it. The idea of the “Personal Universal Deck” originated with the poet and playwright Michael McClure, who gave the project of creating such decks to his students in a 1976 lecture at Naropa University. Basically, you will need 50 index cards or small pieces of paper, and on them, you will write 100 words (one on the front and one on the back of each card/paper) using the rules found here.

Don’t agonize over your word choices. Making the deck should be fun and revealing, as you generate words that sound “good” to you. The fact that the words are mainly divided among the five senses should be helpful in selecting words that you like the sound of, and that have some meaning personal to you. For example, my deck contains “harbor,” “wool,” “murmur,” “obsidian,” and “needle.”

Once you have your deck put together, shuffle it a few times. Now select a card or two, and use them as the basis for a new poem.

I chose to use my tarot deck for todays prompt and got a very accurate reading for myself vs using the deck that the prompt suggested. Try it for yourself if you have a tarot deck, if not you can go online and get your own reading done if you choose, I would recommend however, getting it done by someone who knows how to use a deck.

Day 3 Poem

The Reading

An upside-down tower tells of the crumbling I allowed to happen

The knight charging forth knows my mind is as sharp as his sword

A young man on his head reminds me to be still, be calm, be alone in my thoughts

Clouds open up, and a hand descends with a staff, beating my self-indulgent thoughts of laziness

Sipping my coffee, I see what I used to be, a student, and I realize that is what I enjoy being

Another cloud opens, another hand descends, this time with a sword cutting my conflicts in twain

The death that everyone fears seeing, is how I see myself as I clutch to decayed memories holding them close to my heart

But you may see me as the sunshine, the one who knows the answers, the one who has it together

My dreams dare me to become greater than I care to be

And it all ends with the strength to become the quiet master that others seek

That is the reading before me

Day 14 Prompt

And last but not least, our (optional) prompt for the day. Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that delves into the meaning of your first or last name. Looking for inspiration? Take a look at this poem by Mark Wunderlich, appropriately titled “Wunderlich.”

Day 14 Poem

Forthright

We are the Sans Detour

Those who speak plainly

There is no nuance

That is obtuse

When our words are heard

We are understood

So let me speak gentle reader

Without any obfuscation

I came upon my name

Through the one who will remain nameless

What I have taken of him

Is simply the family name, crest

And I am learning to leave the rest

The need to be direct

And not mince my words

Comes from the lineage

That has been obscured

Where others put on airs

Or develop their character

I prefer to go straight for the jugular

Make my point

And then leave you my friend

Not to wonder at what I meant

Not ponder a greater message

You already have one hundred thousand channels

And there is truly nothing on

I reject the one who brought me into this world

But the name survives

The name that defines my identity

The name that I hated in ignorance

But with enlightenment now brings me hope

Now I have a touchstone

That can lad me like he

That can be the example

That can be the father

A name, not a man

So to you viewing these words

Or heeding my voice

Know that if I don’t try to color

The poetry that has given me purpose

It is not for lack of knowledge

Rather,

It is my lineage

Being Generous

Creating takes a spirit of generosity, and in today's episode, I will explain the necessity of being generous with your artistic journey. I am pushing myself to higher and more transparent levels.

The messages were coming in fast and furious. Tinlay ignored as best she could the pinging of her smart phone. It was not even 9 o’clock yet and she dropped her daughter off at school not even two hours ago. She had finished her second cup of coffee and her husband had left for work an hour ago. This was supposed to be her time to relax before cleaning the house.

The morning had been cloudy and drizzling, there was fog on the road but not too much to impact traffic that much. October mornings were usually like this, it made her drag in the mornings but as soon as lunch time hit, she would be getting her second wind. Her daughter Winnona had slept in a little longer than usual and was difficult this morning. Fourth graders were like that, Tinlay remembered from her teaching days. She had gone into temporary retirement when Winnona was born and was not looking at going back to teaching anytime soon. Right now, she enjoyed being a wife and a mother.

When she sat back down on the couch and opened her smart phone her world stopped. Message after message on the neighborhood social media page with the subject title of active shooter appeared before her. This was a rare occurrence as the last time was two years ago in a neighboring community that also used the social media app. She got those notifications too because she had friends in the area. This time was different because it was from her community and Winona’s elementary school Swan Victor Elementary. Just as she read the first one of maybe 100, she heard the police sirens go off on the main road. Her heart dropped into the pit of her stomach. Her only thoughts were of Winona’s safety,...

“Are you feeling better now, it seems like you are okay,” asked Cheryl?

“I am fine now; I am just tired of this stuff happening to me. It’s happened so many times before,” replied Myra.

“I totally understand as much as someone can who has not had this happen to them. Probably Carl understands even more so since he has similar episodes,” replied Cheryl.

“Will I die like Carl,” asked Myra?

“What do you mean dear,” asked Carl?

“Well, I had a dream that you were dead, and I was standing over your grave. It seemed so real, and everyone seems to be very gentle around you,” replied Myra.

“I have no immediate plans on dying so don’t you worry,” said Carl.

“I had a similar dream about my dad where I couldn’t find him anywhere and someone told me he had died and from what you told me my dad is dead. That’s why I am so worried about you,” said Myra.

“Death is just a part of like and we don’t know when we are going to die, but I assure you I have a long time to go before we can even think of me dying,” replied Carl. Cheryl looked at Carl and mouthed “should we tell her about your tumor”? Carl shrugged his shoulders. “Myra, there is something I should tell you right now. I don’t know if you overheard any conversations and that is what caused your dream about me dying, but you need to know. I have a tumor in my brain that causes my episodes. That tumor is not in remission yet and probably won’t go into remission. As you can see, I can work and interact with people just fine. I can cook and drive and do everything a person without a tumor can do,...

Navigating Creativity: The Art of Mapping in Your Artistic Practice

Artists often find inspiration in unexpected places, and mapping has become an invaluable tool for me to chart the unexplored territories of my imagination. Whether you're a painter, writer, musician, or any other kind of creative spirit, incorporating mapping into your process can open up new avenues for expression and self-discovery.

Links on Map

Points to Consider

Mind Mapping: One of the most accessible and visually engaging ways to kickstart your creative process is through mind mapping. Grab a sheet of paper or open a digital canvas, and let your ideas flow organically. Start with a central concept or theme and branch out with associated thoughts, emotions, and visual elements. This not only helps in generating ideas but also establishes connections between seemingly unrelated concepts.

Spatial Storytelling: For writers and storytellers, creating a physical or digital map of your fictional world can bring it to life in ways you never imagined. Plot out the landscapes, mark the significant events, and visualize the relationships between characters. This not only adds depth to your storytelling but also provides a visual reference for consistency in your narrative.

Project Planning As artists, we often embark on ambitious projects that require careful planning. Mapping out the steps of your creative process can help you stay organized and focused. Whether it's a series of paintings, a novel, or a musical composition, breaking it down into manageable components ensures a smoother journey from concept to completion.

Visual Journaling Think of a visual journal as a map of your creative evolution. Capture your thoughts, sketches, and reflections in a dedicated space. This not only serves as a record of your artistic journey but also provides insights into your growth and the recurring themes that define your work.

The Kernel of Map

A mind map triggers new ideas and fresh connections.

Map Definitions

Mind Map: A mind map is a diagram used to visually organize information into a hierarchy, showing relationships among pieces of the whole.[1] It is often created around a single concept, drawn as an image in the center of a blank page, to which associated representations of ideas such as images, words and parts of words are added. Major ideas are connected directly to the central concept, and other ideas branch out from those major ideas. Source Wikipedia

Map Challenge

  • Compose a mind map based on a blue intention card.
  • Work with your team on a mind map that addresses a community-wide problem.
  • Challenge yourself to create a mind map that uses only images or sketches - no words allowed.

Carl sat in his hospital bed and heard Cheryl quietly talking with Myra. The smell he hated was almost overwhelming and it seemed like forever before the nurse came back to his room. His companion was the beeps from the machines monitoring his vitals. The smell and the feeling of death is why he hated hospitals and since he was alone with his thoughts every time a beep didn’t go off in the way he expected he almost jumped off the bed. When the nurse finally came in to disconnect him and give him the discharge paperwork he was more than ready to go.

“Okay, the doctor said that he wants you to follow up with your doctor in about a week. Do you need us to call your doctor's office today to make that happen or will you be able to do that,” asked the nurse?

“I can do that, no worries. I am just ready to get out of here. No offense but I hate hospitals,” replied Carl.

“So do I, but it pays the bills. Okay, do you have someone to watch over you today just to make sure you are okay,” asked the nurse?

“Yes, my fiancé next door is going to be here with me and our adopted daughter. Also, my sister-in-law will be driving us home and will probably check in on us throughout the day,” replied Carl.

“That sounds good. That little girl is awesome. She was a pro the whole time she was here. It’s good to see a young couple like yourselves helping someone who needs it. How long have you all been together,” asked the nurse?

“Oh gosh, it feels like forever but in a good way,” lied Carl.

“Okay here are your discharge instructions. I’ll put them in your bag. I am going to...

27 Jun 2020Using Storytelling to Improve your Artistic Practice00:46:05

Welcome friends to Create Art Podcast, today's topic is Storytelling and how to use it to improve your artistic practice. Being able to tell a story is the kernel of all artistic practices. We want to convey an idea or an image to our audiences and be able to truly reach them and impact their lives. To do this we must be able to tell a good story. Todays episode is broken down like this :

  • Ways to incorporate Storytelling into your art
  • Two Stories by your head instigator
  • Important items that need to be in any story

How can we incorporate storytelling into our artistic practice?

  • Use a journal to note the initial inspiration and the journey
  • Interview your favorite artists or teacher ( if alive) and ask about the story behind their creations
  • Study your favorite artist ( if not alive or "unreachable"), see if they have a biography or review interviews they have given where they discuss their works journey and find these elements in their work
  • Try another form of art and tell a story through that new form
  • Join up with a local storytelling group and practice telling stories

I recently have been trying StreamYard to tell my stories on FaceBook and Instagram. The first story I am presenting is my first time seeing the movie Rocky. This was inspired by a good podcasting friend of mine Lance Anderson from Verge of The Dude Podcast. The second story was inspired by the local storyteller's meetup that I attend monthly. During Valentine's day in 2020, we met up at a local gallery, took a piece of art that reminded us about a story we had and connected the two in the story. It is by practicing and presenting these stories that we get better at incorporating stories in our work.

Good storytelling has elements that need to be in place. Reviewing the article titled "A Refresher on Storytelling 101" by JD Schaum in The Harvard Business Review he reminds us of these elements.

  • Parachute in, don’t preamble
  • Choose first and final words carefully
  • Follow the “Goldilocks” theory of details
  • Focus your delivery on “one person with one thought
  • Consider the power of poetry
  • Use silence for impact and emphasis
  • Know your AIM

07 Apr 2021POETRY FOR 30 DAYS IN APRIL DAY 600:05:27

Day 6 Prompt

Finally, here’s our daily (optional) prompt. Our prompt yesterday asked you to take inspiration from another poem, and today’s continues in the same vein. This prompt, which comes from Holly Lyn Walrath, is pretty simple. As she explains it here:

Go to a book you love. Find a short line that strikes you. Make that line the title of your poem. Write a poem inspired by the line. Then, after you’ve finished, change the title completely.

I encourage you to read Walrath’s full post, which has some other ideas for generating new poems based on pre-existing text.

I used the Tao Te Ching 72nd verse

Hence the sage knows himself but does not display himself, loves himself but does not exalt himself.

Day 6 Poem

Hence the sage knows himself but does not display himself, loves himself but does not exalt himself/ Tao Te Ching verse 72

To know is to love

If it takes a lifetime

To look up from the page

And receive the inspiration

To describe what these eyes have seen

Is that failure

Follow a path

How do you know that the path

Will lead to a desired destination

Will the footsteps imprinted in the freshly fallen snow

Lead to home

Or the jaws of the leopard

Does the feeling of certainty

Come with a written guarantee

Reviewed by lawyers and philosophers

Or is it just a chemical imbalance

That caused visions from the afflicted

And led nations to kneel

A preference of quietude

Acceptance that the ending is unknown

Undetermined

That the accepted good

May just be the most insidious evil

Cloaked in the mindless praises

Of those who wished to be fooled

Of those who must always be on the side of right

Rather than common good

If the utmost wish is to see the wonders of life

Lift up the eyes from behind the page

Put down the pen

Forget waiting on inspiration

Open the eyes and see

The answers are simpler

And visible

Than what the stories of old have told

In 2009 I started participating in National Poetry Writing Month which became the basis for my book Wisdom From the Sack and Shaving Crop Circles in My Chest Hair. In 2020 I started publishing my podcast version of the challenge and those can be viewed here for 2020 and here for 2021.

April 8th Poetry Prompt

And last but not least, here is our daily prompt (optional, as always). Today’s prompt comes to us from this list of “all-time favorite writing prompts.” It asks you to name your alter-ego, and then describe him/her in detail. Then write in your alter-ego’s voice. Maybe your alter-ego is a streetwise detective, or a superhero, or a very small goldfinch. Whoever or whatever your alternate self may be, I hope this prompt lets you stretch both your writing skills and your self-knowledge.

April 8th Poem

Will The Real Kimo Please Speak

8 April 2022

I don’t often get a chance to speak

He keeps me under wraps until its time to stand in front of a mic

He uses my strength and anger

To fuel his performance

Sometimes I wish he’d get drunk or at least high

So that you can hear what we talk about

How often I tell him he is nothing without me

How often I tell him that he is worthless

One day you will all figure out he has no talent

He is not as smart as he seems

I can’t wait until he has to say these things to the world

And on that day, I become the everyday voice

I become this hulking frame...

Todays Poetry Prompt

Now, write your own two-part poem that focuses on a food or type of meal. At some point in the poem, describe the food or meal as if it were a specific kind of person. Give the food/meal at least one line of spoken dialogue.

Thanksgiving Dinner

29 April 2023

I never really thought about this meal when I was younger

We always drove the hour that took forever

No rest stops unless you call pissing in the corn fields a rest stop

We always left before dawn

And were lucky to return with our lives

We would eat freshly slaughtered ham

Nothing tasted sweeter

The mashed potatoes not from a box

Was chunky and gritty smashed rather than mashed

With all the cousins in their bare house

And each year a James Bond flick on the background

The cigarettes overflowed in...

Do You hang Your Projects on Your Fridge?

Do you remember when you were a kid and maybe your parents put your drawings or school art on the fridge? How awesome did you feel when that happened. Now look around your home, where is your artwork? Why aren’t you putting your art around your house? Do you think that perhaps your stuff is no good, or are you suffering from imposter syndrome? Well, there is probably a reason for that, you are being too critical about your work, and maybe that is stopping you from enhancing your living space and creating art for yourself. Today I am going to help you connect with that inner child whose artwork was displayed lovingly on the fridge in a place of prominence in your house.

Points Discussed

  • Be proud of your work, you are your first fan
  • Just Do It
  • Practice work
  • Connect with others

Carl kept on driving until they were about fifteen minutes from the apartment. Myra was asleep in the back seat, and he was getting tired as well. The sun was setting, and the sky was a light orange, wispy clouds blocked out most of the blue and Carl’s eyes were drooping. He rolled down the window hoping the fresh air would wake him up until he got both of them back home. Myra was gently snoring and talking in her sleep. Carl couldn’t hear clearly what she was saying, but it sounded like she was talking to someone. Carl turned off the classical music and put on the podcast he was listening to from Canada. The story he was listening to picked up where he left off and he found himself getting quickly engrossed and forgetting that Myra was in the car. The story was about a man being probed by aliens and the mans voice sounded like a bad imitation of someone from the south. He chuckled a little and heard Myra stir so then he muffled his amusement. When the story was over, the host was reading the credits and one of the names that he read was John Esten Cooke. When Carl heard that name, Myra stirred even more and started saying “daddy John daddy John where am I?” Carl pulled the car over to the next gas station and parked the car. He looked back at Myra whose eyes were open but not focused on him. She kept on saying the same thing, “daddy John daddy John where am I?” Carl waved his hands in front of her eyes and snapped his fingers a few times.

“Myra, you are here in my car. It’s Carl, we are driving home,” Carl said to Myra.

Myra was still unresponsive to Carl as she kept on repeating the same phrase “daddy John, daddy John where am I?”

The Art of Refutation - A Deep Dive into Creative Growth

Let's be real – the creative process is a roller coaster. We all experience highs of inspiration and lows of self-doubt. It's in these challenging moments that refutation steps in as a guiding light. Instead of resisting criticism or feeling defeated, refutation encourages us to confront our work head-on, identifying areas for improvement and learning from them.

Links on Refute

Points to Consider

  • Critique Your Own Work: Start by objectively critiquing your own creations. What works well? What could be improved? Don't be afraid to be brutally honest with yourself.
  • Invite Constructive Feedback Surround yourself with a supportive community that provides constructive feedback.
  • Learn from MistakesInstead of dwelling on mistakes, view them as opportunities to learn. Every misstep is a chance to refine your skills and develop a deeper understanding of your craft.
  • Experiment with Different Styles: Refutation isn't just about fixing mistakes; it's also about exploring new possibilities. Step out of your comfort zone and experiment with different styles and techniques.

The Kernel of Refute

When you refute something, you risk changing your perspective and yourself.

Refute Definitions

Refute :to say or prove that a person, statement, opinion, etc. is wrong or false, to prove a statement, opinion, or belief to be wrong or false, Source Cambridge Dictionary

Refute Challenge

  • Thoughtfully refute a statement, assumption, or idea.
  • Seek understanding be reviving the ancient Greek practice of dissoi logoi, composing an argument on both sides of a heated issue.
  • Pretend to advocate for someone who holds a view that profoundly differs from your own.
