19 May 2021S2 Ep10: J.T. Scott AKA "The Dragon Lady"00:21:41
Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspired them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

My guest today is J.T. Scott. Jenny, AKA The Dragon Lady, is the author of the "Sammy Rambles" series of books about a boy and his dragon. She has also written the popular illustrated series "Bumper and Friends", following the adventures of garden creatures who help each other solve problems.

In our conversation Jenny talks about how, rather than fear of the blank page, she struggles with story overload. She also outlines how she has expanded her profile by creating a range of merchandise related to her book characters, and she encourages authors to think big!

More About J.T. Scott aka The Dragon Lady

J.T. Scott, Jenny, is the author of the "Sammy Rambles" series of books about a boy and his dragon. She has also written the popular illustrated series "Bumper and Friends" following the adventures of garden creatures who help each other solve problems.

Inspired by childhood visits to National Trust houses and English Heritage castles, Jenny's imagination was captivated by these impressive buildings with their rich history.

A love of reading and mythology spilled out into creating her own stories for Playmobile and Lego characters, writing the scenes down on scraps of paper so she would remember what happened when the toys had to be tidied away.

Growing older, Jenny's stories became longer and more detailed, with complex characters and plots and gradually the idea of writing a whole book was planted in Jenny's mind. If other authors could write stories and create books then why couldn't she have a go?

This, and Jenny's love for storytelling, form the backdrop for the Sammy Rambles books where Sammy and his friends attend the Dragamas School for Dragon Charming, set in the fictional Dragamas Castle, where they have to work together to solve problems and save the Dragon World from the enemy known only as the Shape.

From pen and paper to self-published, there are five books in the Sammy Rambles series. The books are available from Amazon and Jenny is also taking on speaking engagements to talk about her journey and how other people can do the same.

From writing the Sammy Rambles series, Jenny's adventure has grown from selling her books to family and friends, to having a stall at a craft fair, then a stall at a literary festival, then speaking at a 'Meet the Author' library event, then speaking at literary festivals right through to giving Interactive Dragon Talks in schools to thousands of children (Nursery, Foundation, Primary and Secondary) in the UK and abroad.

Following on from the Dragon Talks is Dragonball Sport, the game Sammy and his friends play in the books, but has been adapted into an all-inclusive invasion game that can be played by children and adults of all ages and abilities, working together to score goals.

Jenny's motivation is simple, having experienced several adversaries in life, she wants to 'give something back' and have a purpose, leaving a legacy of inspiring children in their imagination and their writing. The Sammy Rambles books are full of empowerment, finding inner strength, making lasting friendships and overcoming seemingly insurmountable problems.

26 May 2021S2 Ep11: Peter Jones: Self-help guru, public speaker and humorous novelist00:49:27
Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspired them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

My guest today is Peter Jones - no, not the Dragon, but the author of three novels and five self help books on being happy, finding love and losing weight.

Peter was the first guest when I initially launched my podcast back in 2014 and we catch up on what's he's been up to, the different ways he tackles writing fiction and non-fiction, and why his wall is covered with photos of Hollywood actors!

More About Peter Jones

Peter Jones started professional life as a particularly rubbish graphic designer, followed by a stint as a mediocre petrol pump attendant. After that he got embroiled in the murky world of credit card banking. Fun times.

Nowadays, Peter spends his days writing, or talking about writing.

He is the author of five popular self-help books on the subjects of happiness, dating and dieting. If you’re overweight, lonely, or unhappy – he’s your guy.

He’s also written three novels; a Rom-Com (Romantic Comedy), A Crim-Com (Crime Comedy), and a Rom-Com-Ding-Dong (A sort-of Romantic-ish Comedy, with attitude). He’s currently working on his fourth novel, which - if it’s a musical - he’ll no doubt describe as a Rom-Com-Sing-Song. (Spoiler: It isn’t).

Peter doesn’t own a large departmental store and probably isn’t the same guy you’ve seen on the TV show Dragons’ Den.

02 Jun 2021S2 Ep12: Nicola Hebron: Wiccan Romance and magical teenage quads00:27:48
Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspired them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

My guest today is Nicola Hebron, author of the Wiccan Romance series of books, which follows the adventures of quads Amelia, Sam, Ben and Charlie who, on their 17th birthday, discover they have magical powers.

In our conversation Nicola talks about method writing, the benefits of self-publishing and how learning about herself through writing gets her through challenging times. She also gives a shout out to the England cricket team … you’ll have to listen to find out why!

More About Nicola Hebron

Writing has been calling to me for years. I often worked on stories in my spare time since my school days, where I frequently spent my lunch hour sat in the library scribbling away. The initial premise for my current series came to me as an idea when I was supposed to be writing a history coursework during a snow week.

Despite my love of writing, I initially followed another career path, heading to the University of Huddersfield to study law. This was inspired by watching Legally Blonde as a kid and deciding to be like Elle Woods. Before deciding to pursue writing full time I worked in a couple of different law firms as a paralegal and worked as a fraud analyst at a bank.

My books are part of my Wiccan Romance series, Wiccan Romances - Amelia’s Story and Wiccan Romances - Sam’s Story.

23 Jun 2021S2 Ep15: Christine Hancock: historical novelist, author of The Byrhtnoth Chronicles00:24:08
Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspires them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

My guest today is Christine Hancock, a historical novelist and author of The Byrhtnoth Chronicles, a series of books set in tenth century England. Christine wrote her first book, Bright Sword, by accident – listen to the episode to find out how, and why she’s now on book number five!

We talk about the pros and cons of self-publishing, how real historical figures can become realistic book characters, and why it’s important that writers also read!

More About Christine Hancock

Christine Hancock was born in Essex and moved to Rugby, Warwickshire when she married. She has a husband, two sons and two lovely grandchildren.

She is a long term family historian and leader of the local history group.

Christine had never thought of becoming an author; she just wanted to write about some of her ancestors. In 2013 she joined a writing class. The class turned out to be about writing fiction. Before she knew it, she was writing a novel.

Byrhtnoth was a real warrior who died in the 991 Battle of Maldon, made famous by the Anglo-Saxon poem of that name. Growing up in Essex, Christine visited Maldon often, and attended the 1000 year anniversary of the battle in 1991.

She wanted to find out what made Byrhtnoth such a famous warrior. She finished the book but discovered it had become a series - how long, she has yet to find out.

The four books in The Byrhtnoth Chronicles – Bright Sword, Bright Axe, Bright Blade and Bright Helm – are out now. Christine’s fifth book Death at the Mint: A Wulfstan Mystery is out on July 1st.

21 Jul 2021S2 Ep19: B.P. Shields: retelling Chinese classics for the western reader00:56:29
Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspires them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

My guest today is B. P. Shields. Brendan has been writing for pleasure all his life but it took a trip to China to inspire him to write his first book – in fact three books – the Rise of the Three Kingdoms trilogy, which is a modern retelling of the 16th century Chinese classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In our conversation Brendan tells me why he wishes he’d started writing books 20 years ago. He also shares some ideas on dealing with writer’s block and overcoming self-doubt, and talks me through his editing process.

More About B.P. Shields

Brendan has always written – poetry, short stories – for his own pleasure, but never seriously thought about publishing since he didn't consider himself the next Carol Ann Duffy or Ian McEwan. Then a number of factors serendipitously came together. First was a trip to China, where he was knocked out by the history and culture. Secondly, his daughter, Lindsay Woodward started to publish her own novels. Finally, after thirty-five years of teaching English in secondary schools, he retired.

He was reading the 16th century Chinese classic Romance of the Three Kingdoms and wondered whether there was a modern retelling of it, in the way that recently a number of authors have written novels based on the Greek myths and legends. He could not find any. He joked with Lindsay that perhaps he should do it. She said, “Why not?”

So, with her example and encouragement, he has just completed the trilogy Rise of the Three Kingdoms. The books are Warlords of the Eastern Han, A Wolf and Two Dragons and the latest book Red Cliffs, and they’re all available on Amazon.

Of course, he now regrets that he did not have the courage in his twenties onwards to try to reach an audience. Let that be a lesson to the listeners of this podcast!

Whether it’s conquering fears and phobias, embracing change, reclaiming confidence, or busting habits (like smoking or bad eating), since 2010 Keith has used his skills and experience to help thousands of people across the planet to transform their lives.

He has distilled what he’s learned and observed over those years into his most recent book The Masks We Wear, which explores the metaphorical masks we all wear in life. It looks at what they are, where they come from, why they are dangerous, and how to live a life without those masks.

04 Nov 2021S3 Ep2: Ashley Wong and Alan Walton, property investors: writing what you know00:29:34
Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspires them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

My guests on the show today are Ashley Wong and Alan Walton. Ashley and Alan both work in the financial services industry and have been property investors since 2009. Alongside working full time jobs, they have recently found the time to write and publish their first book Choose the Right Letting Agent: A Property Investor’s Guide
During our conversation we talk about lockdown writing and using a coach to help you structure and write a book. My guests also outline how they went about writing a book in partnership, and how they are using it as the launchpad for a new business.

More About Ashley Wong and Alan Walton

Ashley and Alan both work in the financial services industry. In 2009, they decided to become property investors and also to educate themselves in this area. Since then they have expanded their property portfolio across London and the Midlands, and they are continuing to grow this today.

They are still in full-time employment and they match their property investment to the time available outside of their day jobs.  They have chosen to have letting agents perform the full management of their properties, while they focus on their jobs and their lives.

Ashley has developed a keen interest in residential lettings and property management and has completed the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) Propertymark qualification, while also having completed her legal studies part time. These qualifications have certainly helped them understand the legal aspects of property management. They have both had letters published in the National Residential Landlords’ Association Winter 2020 magazine, and again in the Summer 2021 issue.  One of these was for The Big Question: ‘Do You Use an Agent?’ where they highlighted the positives of using an agent to manage their properties.  Ashley was also featured in the same publication in the Spring 2021 Meet the Landlord section.

Ashley and Alan have been hosting a property mastermind since 2019, where they work together with other investors for mutual advice and support on their property investment journey.  Through their extensive experience with letting agents, they have also assisted investors and tenants to review their letting agents’ terms and conditions and tenancy agreements, highlighting matters of concern which require follow up as well as the use of effective resolution procedures when landlords have problems with their letting agents.

My guest today is Teri M Brown, a business content writer and author who was born in Greece but now  lives in North Carolina. Teri has been writing since childhood and turned her hobby into a career, but the stories inside her have always wanted to be told, and she is now just about to publish her first novel, “Sunflowers Beneath the Snow”.

During our conversation we talk about why authors need thick skins, dreaming big and book marketing, and Teri explains how her writing process is ‘story first, detail later’.

More About Teri M Brown

Born in Athens, Greece as an Air Force brat, Teri M Brown came into this world with an imagination full of stories to tell. She now calls the North Carolina coast home, and the peaceful nature of the sea has been a great source of inspiration for her creativity.

Not letting 2020 get the best of her, Teri chose to go on an adventure that changed her outlook on life. She and her husband, Bruce, rode a tandem bicycle across the United States from Astoria, Oregon to Washington DC, successfully raising money for Toys for Tots. She learned she is stronger than she realized and capable of anything she sets her mind to.

27 Jan 2022S3 Ep13: Kath Parrington: The soul of a writer, the head of an accountant00:42:22
Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspires them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

My guest today is Kath Parrington, who combined a corporate career in finance with a lifelong love of words to write her first book. “The REAL Business Plan” is a simple, no nonsense guide to writing a business plan that takes out all the angst and complication and makes it a straightforward process.

During our conversation we talk about the process of turning a process into a book, owning your expert status and using networking as a marketing tool. Kath also tells me about some of the problems she encountered using Amazon’s publishing service.

More About Kath Parrington

Kath Parrington is a natural-born planner. Planning is in her DNA. Entering the corporate world at the age of 22 she planned to have made her exit before turning 50. She achieved it aged 47. Through big business, she learned a lot about planning. And goal setting. And measuring. How to overcomplicate it, how the wrong goals drive the wrong behaviours, how planning is seen as boring, a chore, something most people avoid. And yet her own experience was that a clear plan can deliver your dreams. So, she’s now trying to make planning simple and fun!

If you’re interested in the academic stuff, Kath has a law degree, a post-graduate certificate in Business Excellence and a Masters degree in Business Administration. That’s probably as close as you will get if you’re looking for a formal qualification in business plans. And as most entrepreneurs will tell you, education doesn’t teach you how to run a business. What’s probably more important is that Kath makes an independent living from sound investment decisions she made 30 years ago. She has a property business and a coaching consultancy. All of this runs successfully through her planning habits.

You can find out more about Kath on LinkedIn and Facebook. But all you really need to know is that her passion is making planning simple. Oh, and dogs. Kath loves dogs.

My guest today is Jim James, an entrepreneur who started his first company in Singapore at the age of 28 and has since opened offices in China, India and the UK. He’s now back living in the UK where he hosts “The UnNoticed Show,” a public relations podcast for entrepreneurs. From the interviews he conducts for his podcast, he found the content for his first book, “The UnNoticed Entrepreneur”.

Jim is a mine of information on technology to help entrepreneurs and he shares with me some really useful tech tools for authors. We also talk about entering book awards, creating merchandise and reader avatars, and Jim explains why writing a book is like running a marathon.

More About Jim James

Jim has built businesses from a suitcase on 3 continents over 25 years, all using public relations. His first brush with #gettingnoticed was at 18 when he jumped out of a plane in return for sponsorship and received expedition equipment in return for media publicity. He hasn’t stopped this model of brand+business building ever since.

Having grown up in Europe, Africa and America, it was perhaps inevitable that Jim would move to Singapore at the age of 28 to start his first company, EASTWEST Public Relations. Since 1995 the B2B agency opened offices in Singapore, China, India and the UK serving over 500 clients. In China between 2006–2019, Jim built the business importing and distributing Morgan Motor Company cars, was interim CEO of Lotus, Vice Chair of the Chamber of Commerce and a number of other profit and not for profit ventures including the bi-annual British Business Awards. He is particularly proud of being the home room parent at the school of his daughters, and serving on the food committee which replaced sugary drinks with milk in the cafeteria.

Jim returned with his young family to the UK in June 2019 to provide his daughters with a British education, and works with clients to ensure that they are able to get noticed for all that they do, and helps companies to enter the Asia market. He hosts “The UnNoticed Show,” a podcast for entrepreneurs with tools and tips for public relations, and has created the SPEAK|pr course providing a structured approach to getting noticed.

Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspires them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

In this episode I meet British sci-fi author Sean Armstrong. Sean publishes under the penname STL Armstrong and his first book, “The Green Girl and the Serum”, is the first in a series of six YA science fiction novels. Sean has mild cerebral palsy and learning difficulties but it hasn't had any bearing on his ability as a writer and he is proof that anyone can achieve their dreams when they put their mind to it!

We talk about the books, films and video games that gave Sean the inspiration for his series of superhero novels. Sean also tells me about the ease of self-publishing with Amazon KDP Print and the sense of achievement he feels about becoming an author.

Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspires them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

In this episode I meet Linda Jämsén, author of Odyssey of Love: A Memoir of Seeking and Finding, which was published in June 2021. Linda is an American ex-pat living in Helsinki and her book tells the true story of how she moved across the world to find love after a psychic told her to travel to Europe to find a tall man wearing glasses!

Linda never intended to write a book and she explains how it grew organically from personal writing she did as therapy after the death of her father. We also talk about being authentic, writing at your own pace, and using editors and beta readers to make your book as good as it can be.

More About Linda Jämsén

Linda Jämsén is an American ex-pat writer-musician living in Helsinki. She grew up in New York, holding a book in one hand while exploring the piano keyboard with the other. She graduated with a B.A. in Music from Bard College, and as an avid choral singer has performed in Hungary, Finland, the UK, and Israel.

For years, she raised funds for a variety of philanthropic causes in Boston, but longing to return to her musical roots, in 2001 she moved to Budapest, land of her musical idol Franz Liszt. Her musical, romantic, and travel adventures abroad inspired her to write Odyssey of Love: A Memoir of Seeking and Finding, her literary debut

Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspires them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

In this episode I meet Mose J Gingerich, a murder mystery author and former reality TV star who spent the first 23 years of his life in the Amish community. I had an absolutely fascinating conversation with Mose, who not only shed light on being an author but also on his time in the Amish, his reasons for leaving and the harsh truth about the world of reality TV.

We also talk about agents and publishers, Mose explains why recording his own audio books was more challenging than he expected, and we discuss the ‘golden hour’ for writing.

More About Mose J Gingerich

Mose J Gingerich was born and raised in the Old Order Amish community of Greenwood, Wisconsin. During his 22 years among the Amish, Mose lived in over a dozen Amish communities, teaching school in several of them. Mose is best known for his roles on television shows like UPN’s Amish in the City (2004) and Amish: Out of Order, National Geographic Channel (2012).

In 2021, Mose started an Amish fiction murder/mystery/suspense series. Shadows We Remain was the debut novel and was written in the sleeper of Mose’s big rig while trucking coast to coast. Caroline Creek Chaos is the second book in the Caroline Creek Series and is out July 2022.

11 Aug 2022S3 Ep25: Eileen Forrestal: The Courage to Shine00:39:50
Welcome to Conversations with Authors, where I – Alison Thompson, AKA The Proof Fairy – meet amazing authors and find out what inspires them to write and what advice they would offer other aspiring authors.

In this episode I meet Eileen Forrestal, a retired anaesthetist who worked as a doctor for 32 years, took over a publishing company, began publishing a series of award-winning diaries and journals and has now written her memoir, “The Courage to Shine”. As you’ll hear during our interview, as a child Eileen had a stammer that made her afraid to speak for years, but she now works as a speaker, mentor and coach, as well as writing and publishing.

During our conversation, we discuss the power of saying yes, overcoming fear, being open to opportunities and using coaches and mentors to help you write your memoir. Eileen’s positivity is infectious and it was a joy to chat with her. I hope you enjoy listening too!

More About Eileen Forrestal

Eileen Forrestal (MB BCh BaO FFARCSI), a retired doctor after 32 years, now engages full time in the business she co-founded in 2006, Get Up and Go Publications Ltd, creating and distributing her award-winning inspirational Get Up and Go diaries and journals, with almost 500,000 copies sold worldwide to date.

Having spent 20 years as an anaesthetist ‘putting people to sleep’, Eileen is now in the business of ‘waking people up’, committed to making a greater impact on personal health and wellbeing with inspiring and encouraging words, rather than with drugs and one pair of hands!!!

In her memoir “The Courage to Shine: Find Your Voice and Discover the Healing Power of Your Words”, Eileen shares her personal story of ‘waking up’ to the discovery of the source of her own wellbeing and vitality – her own authentic self-expression – her voice! Plagued by a childhood stammer, and afraid to speak for too many years, Eileen is now fully enjoying life as an author, speaker, mentor, coach, publishing entrepreneur and accredited thought leader  and encourages others to overcome their fears, find their true expression and shine their light in the world.

An avid traveller, she has explored much of this beautiful earth. She describes summiting Kilimanjaro, trekking to Everest Base Camp, flying a microlite over Victoria Falls, riding an ostrich and hypnotising a chicken as special highlights in a very colourful life.

A native of Dublin, she has lived the best years of her life in Sligo, in the beautiful northwest of Ireland.
