04 Dec 2024Survival Punk | Ep296: When Prepping Saved the Day00:24:00

Prepping isn’t just about preparing for the end of the world—it’s about everyday readiness for the unexpected. Whether it’s a small inconvenience or a major crisis, being prepared can make all the difference. Here are some real-world examples where prepping saved the day.

Bug Spray in My Bug-Out Bag

Something as simple as bug spray can make or break an outdoor experience. Once, while on an impromptu hike, I found myself surrounded by relentless mosquitoes. Thankfully, my bug-out bag was stocked with a bottle of bug spray. What could’ve been a miserable outing turned into a pleasant adventure. This small preparation reminded me how even the smallest items can be lifesavers.

A Spare Fuel Pump for My Car

Car trouble can strike when you least expect it. I once faced a sudden breakdown in a remote area—my fuel pump had failed. Luckily, I had a spare fuel pump and the tools needed to replace it. A quick roadside repair got me back on the road, saving me time, money, and a tow. This experience emphasized the importance of having spares for critical items.

Food Storage During an Ice Storm

When an ice storm knocked out power for days, my family didn’t have to panic. Thanks to a stash of food storage and MREs, we had plenty to eat without needing refrigeration or cooking. This preparedness allowed us to focus on staying warm and safe instead of scrambling for supplies.

Everyday Preparedness Matters

Prepping isn’t just for doomsday scenarios. It’s about being ready for life’s unpredictable challenges. From bug spray to spare parts to emergency food, every item you prepare can be a lifesaver. Prepping gives you peace of mind, knowing you can handle whatever life throws your way.

11 Dec 2024Survival Punk | Ep295: Skills vs. Stuff: The Essential Prepper Debate00:27:24

When it comes to prepping, the debate of skills versus gear often arises. Having the latest and greatest survival tools is great, but if you don’t know how to use them, they’re just weight in your pack. Developing practical skills is the cornerstone of any solid preparedness plan.

Learn, Read, and Take Notes

Prepping starts with knowledge. There’s a wealth of information out there—books, online courses, and hands-on workshops. Whether it’s wilderness survival, first aid, or home gardening, take the time to read and absorb this knowledge. Don’t stop at just reading; take notes. Write down techniques, tips, and even mistakes to avoid. Your personal prepper notebook could one day become your most valuable resource.

Practice Makes Perfect

Once you’ve absorbed the theory, it’s time to practice. Building a fire isn’t something you can master by watching a single video. Get outside and test your skills with methods like a bow drill or flint and steel. These experiences not only solidify your knowledge but also prepare you for real-world scenarios when stress levels may be high.

Test and Refine Survival Techniques

Survival isn’t just about fire. Try your hand at setting up traps, purifying water, or creating shelter. You’ll quickly discover what works, what doesn’t, and what gear you actually need to invest in. Every skill you master adds to your confidence and reduces your reliance on equipment.

Gear Complements Skills

Gear isn’t unimportant—it’s a helpful tool. But without the skills to use it effectively, it’s of little use. Instead of focusing on accumulating stuff, focus on building abilities. In a true emergency, your knowledge and experience will be your most valuable assets.

Prepping is a journey of continual learning and adaptation. Let your skills lead the way.

21 Dec 2024Survival Punk | Ep307: Be Your Own Mechanic00:26:06
Be Your Own Mechanic | episode 307

In today’s world, relying on auto shops for even the smallest repairs can drain your wallet. Learning to be your own mechanic isn’t just about saving money—it’s about building independence and confidence. Here’s why you should consider turning some wrenches yourself.

It’s Easier Than It Seems

Many car repairs are surprisingly straightforward. With the wealth of tutorials available online, you can learn how to replace brake pads, change your oil, or fix a broken taillight with ease. Modern tools and detailed guides make troubleshooting and repairing much more accessible than ever before. You don’t need to be an expert to get started; even basic maintenance goes a long way toward keeping your car running smoothly.

It’s Way Cheaper Than Shops

Auto shops charge not just for parts but for labor, which often makes up the bulk of the bill. When you do the work yourself, you only pay for the parts. For example, replacing a car battery at a shop could cost double what you’d spend doing it yourself. Over time, handling your own repairs can save you thousands of dollars, freeing up your budget for other priorities.

You Build a Valuable Skill Set

Becoming your own mechanic means adding a vital skill to your survival toolkit. Whether it’s fixing a flat on the side of the road or keeping an older vehicle running, this know-how can be a lifesaver. Plus, working on your car fosters a deeper understanding of how it works, making you better prepared for emergencies.

Empower yourself by taking control of your vehicle’s upkeep. Start small, build your skills, and reap the rewards of self-reliance. Being your own mechanic isn’t just practical—it’s liberating.

14 Dec 2024Survival Punk | Ep303: Getting Cheap Meat for Canning00:16:22

In this episode of the Survival Punk Podcast, we explore how to stock your pantry with affordable, high-quality meat for canning. Whether you’re preparing for emergencies or just stretching your food budget, these strategies can help you save money while building a reliable supply of protein.

Making Friends with Store Workers

Building relationships with your local grocery store staff can open up opportunities to snag great deals. Store workers often know when markdowns happen or if there are excess stock or near-expiration meat that can be purchased at a discount. A friendly conversation could lead to tips on when and where to find the best prices.

Shopping After Big Cooking Holidays

Big cooking holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter are goldmines for discounted meat. After these holidays, stores often have surplus turkey, ham, or roasts that they mark down to clear inventory. Keep an eye out for these seasonal deals and plan to stock up when prices drop.

Shopping at Multiple Stores

Don’t limit yourself to a single grocery store. By visiting different locations, you can compare prices and take advantage of regional or store-specific discounts. Some stores may have weekly specials or unadvertised deals, making it worthwhile to expand your shopping routine.

With a little effort, you can find affordable meat to pressure can, ensuring you always have a ready supply of delicious, shelf-stable protein. Tune in to hear more tips and tricks, including canning methods and how to safely preserve your savings.

Kickstart 2025: Essential Prepper Goals for the New Year | episode 316 Inventory Check

Before diving into new projects, take stock of what you already have. Go through your food storage, medical supplies, and gear. Check expiration dates, identify gaps, and ensure your emergency kits are fully stocked. An annual inventory review helps prevent waste and guarantees you’re not left scrambling in a crisis.

Plan Your Garden

A self-sufficient food source is invaluable. Start planning your 2025 garden now. Research crops suited for your climate, map out planting schedules, and order seeds early. Even small urban gardens can yield a surprising amount of food. Consider adding medicinal herbs and perennial plants that will provide long-term benefits.

Learn One New Skill a Month

Survival skills are perishable – if you don’t use them, you lose them. Make it a goal to learn or refine one new skill every month. Whether it’s basic first aid, canning, woodworking, or foraging, continuous learning enhances self-reliance. Enroll in workshops, watch online tutorials, and practice regularly.

Make a Budget and Stick with It

Prepping can get expensive if you’re not careful. Establish a realistic budget that prioritizes essential purchases and training. Break larger projects into manageable steps to avoid burnout or financial strain. By staying disciplined, you’ll steadily build your resources without sacrificing financial stability.

This year, stay organized, keep learning, and grow stronger in your preparedness journey. Tune into the podcast for a deeper dive into these goals and practical tips to help you thrive in 2025!

28 Dec 2024Survival Punk | Ep313: Lost Jobs of the Past and How to Stay Ahead00:18:54

The Forgotten Professions In the dim streets of Victorian London, lamplighters once roamed, bringing light to the night by igniting street lamps one by one. Switchboard operators connected voices across cities, and milkmen left bottles on doorsteps before the sun rose. These jobs, once essential, have faded into history. Technology and societal shifts often render roles obsolete. But with every lost job, new ones rise to take their place.

The Future of Work and AI Disruption Today, a new wave of change is upon us. Artificial Intelligence is not just a buzzword but a transformative force across industries. From manufacturing lines to data analysis, AI is replacing repetitive tasks and even stepping into creative fields. But does this spell doom for the workforce? Not necessarily.

Who Moved My Cheese? Spencer Johnson’s book Who Moved My Cheese? explores how individuals react to change. The core lesson: those who embrace transformation, adapt, and seek new opportunities thrive. This same mindset applies to the evolving job landscape. Jobs may disappear, but by staying curious and flexible, new paths can open.

Emerging Careers in AI AI is not just a job-taker but a job-creator. Fields like AI ethics, prompt engineering, and machine learning operations are emerging rapidly. Creative professionals are using AI tools to enhance productivity, and entirely new sectors like virtual world design are gaining traction. The key to thriving? Learn to work with AI, not against it.

Staying Ahead

  • Learn Continuously: Online courses, podcasts, and workshops can keep your skills fresh.
  • Embrace Technology: Experiment with AI tools relevant to your field.
  • Network: Surround yourself with forward-thinkers and innovators.

The future isn’t about the jobs that are lost, but the ones we create by adapting to new realities. In every shift, there is opportunity—if we’re willing to chase it.

28 Dec 2024Survival Punk | Ep311: Conspiracy Round Table Special01:05:42
A Christmas Eve Rerun: Conspiracy Theories with James and Mike

Hey everyone,

I hope you’re all having a fantastic holiday season! Unfortunately, I’ve come down with a bit of a cold and lost my voice – perfect timing, right? Since it’s Christmas Eve and I can’t record anything new, I thought this would be the perfect time to roll out a classic from the archives.

This episode is a throwback to a few years ago when James and Mike from Survival Punk joined forces with some of our fellow podcasters to dive deep into the wild and entertaining world of conspiracy theories. It’s one of those episodes that’s just pure fun – a mix of skepticism, laughs, and “what if” moments that make for the perfect holiday escape.

We cover everything from moon landing theories to secret societies, with plenty of tangents along the way. If you’re spending the evening wrapping presents or just relaxing by the fire, this is the perfect companion to keep you entertained.

I know reruns aren’t always the most exciting, but trust me – this one’s a gem. Plus, I figure a little nostalgia fits the season. If you’ve heard it before, it’s worth revisiting, and if you’re new to the podcast, welcome! This will give you a good taste of the kind of conversations we love to have here.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a fantastic New Year. Thank you for being part of this journey with me. We’ll be back with new content as soon as my voice returns – hopefully very soon!

Stay safe, stay curious, and enjoy the episode.

Cheers, James

08 Jan 2025Survival Punk | Ep319: When is Enough Enough? – Finding the Balance in Prepping00:21:29
When is Enough Enough? – Finding the Balance in Prepping | episode 319

Prepping is all about being ready for whatever life throws your way, but at what point do you stop adding to your stockpile? It’s a question many preppers face – can you ever have enough stored away? While it’s important to be prepared, there’s a fine line between smart prepping and unnecessary hoarding.

How Much is Too Much? It’s easy to fall into the mindset of “just one more bag of rice” or “another case of canned beans won’t hurt.” But prepping isn’t just about having the most – it’s about having what you need for your situation. Assess the size of your household, the threats you’re likely to face, and the space you have available. A well-planned prep tailored to your needs will always outshine a cluttered room full of random items.

Rotate Your Food Preps Food prepping can quickly turn into waste if you’re not careful. Rotating your supplies is essential to keeping things fresh and usable. Practice the first-in, first-out method to ensure older items are consumed before they expire. Incorporate your prep food into everyday meals to keep things moving.

Prepping Beyond Food Remember, it’s not all about food. Water, medical supplies, tools, and skills are equally vital. Stockpiling is important, but knowing how to use what you have is just as crucial. Diversify your preps to cover a wide range of potential needs.

Quality Over Quantity At the end of the day, prepping is about peace of mind. Focus on quality, sustainable options, and skill-building. Prepping isn’t just survival – it’s about creating a life you can sustain, no matter the conditions.

21 Dec 2024Survival Punk | Ep308: Biden Running Amok00:25:39
Biden Running Amok | episode 308

As President Biden’s term winds down, a whirlwind of controversial decisions has left the nation buzzing with debate. From high-profile pardons to international tensions, Biden’s final days in office seem destined for the history books, though not without raising eyebrows across the political spectrum.

Pardoning His Son

One of the most polarizing moves has been the pardon of his son, Hunter Biden. Critics argue this pardon undermines the judicial process, while supporters claim it’s an act of compassion. The decision has reignited partisan debates, with many questioning whether personal loyalty has trumped public accountability. Regardless of perspective, this unprecedented act has fueled heated discussions about ethics and legacy.

Clemency for 1,500 Individuals

In a sweeping gesture, Biden also granted clemency to over 1,500 individuals. Including on Chinese national that had 40,000 child porn images.  Advocates for criminal justice reform have praised the move, hailing it as a step toward a more equitable system. However, detractors worry about the potential implications for public safety and accuse the administration of political posturing. The scale and timing of this clemency spree have added to the drama of his final days.

Pushing Toward WW3?

Perhaps most alarming to some is Biden’s aggressive stance on international conflicts. In his waning days, heightened rhetoric and escalated military actions have left many fearing the brink of a global conflict. It’s a dangerous gamble that risks plunging the world into chaos.

As Biden’s presidency comes to a close, these dramatic moves will surely cause lasting trouble for years to come. With moves that display reckless decision-making, his last days in office are cementing a legacy that refuses to fade quietly.

25 Dec 2024Survival Punk | Ep310: Is Buying Canned Goods As Good As Home Preservation00:26:59
Is Buying Canned Goods As Good As Home Preservation | episode 310

When it comes to long-term food storage, many preppers face the question: Is buying canned goods just as good as preserving food at home? While store-bought options are convenient, there are significant benefits to home preservation that make it worth considering. In this episode, we break down the key factors: price, variety, and ingredient control.

Price – Home Preservation Saves Money

One of the biggest advantages of preserving food at home is cost savings. While canned goods at the store may seem affordable, the prices add up over time. When you preserve your own food, especially when buying in bulk or growing it yourself, the cost per jar is often much lower. Plus, you avoid the markup associated with brand names and packaging. With a little effort, you can stockpile your pantry for a fraction of the cost.

Variety – Expand Beyond Store Offerings

Store shelves are limited to popular items, but when you preserve at home, the options are endless. From seasonal produce to unique family recipes, you can create canned goods that you won’t find in any store. If  Love spicy pickled carrots or blueberry preserves with minimal sugar? Therefore you’re in control. This opens up a world of flavors and ensures your pantry is stocked with exactly what you enjoy.

Ingredient Control – Perfect for Special Diets

For those with dietary restrictions or preferences, home preservation is a game-changer. Canned goods from a store are loaded with sugar, salt, or preservatives. When you preserve your own food, you choose the ingredients. This is ideal for low-sodium diets, organic eating, or reducing artificial additives. Plus, if you’re focused on healthy eating, home preservation lets you avoid unnecessary fillers and chemicals.

Whether you’re a seasoned prepper or just starting out, home preservation offers unmatched benefits that store-bought goods can’t compete with. Tune in to this episode to learn more about how to start preserving your own food and take control of your pantry today.

08 Jan 2025Survival Punk | Ep320: Off-Grid Cooking: Grills, Camp Stoves, and Fuel Storage00:25:13
Off-Grid Cooking: Grills, Camp Stoves, and Fuel Storage | episode 320

When the grid goes down, cooking doesn’t have to stop. Whether it’s a power outage or an off-grid adventure, having reliable cooking methods is essential. Let’s break down two of the best options—grills and camp stoves—and how to store enough fuel to keep them running.

Grills: Charcoal vs. Propane Grills are a go-to for many preppers. Charcoal grills offer simplicity and flavor, but they require more effort to manage. Charcoal can take time to light, and temperature control isn’t as precise. However, charcoal stores indefinitely if kept dry, making it a solid long-term prep.

On the other hand, propane grills heat up quickly and allow for precise temperature control. They’re easy to use and excellent for quick meals. The downside? Propane canisters are finite, and without regular refills, they won’t last forever. Storing multiple propane tanks ensures longer use, but you’ll need a safe, ventilated space.

Camp Stoves with Butane For indoor cooking, camp stoves fueled by butane are a top choice. Compact and efficient, butane stoves are easy to set up and burn cleanly, making them safe for inside use. They’re perfect for boiling water, heating food, or even frying. The catch? Butane canisters can be expensive and don’t last long under heavy use.

Fuel Storage Tips

  • Charcoal: Store in airtight bins or sealed bags to keep it dry.
  • Propane: Keep tanks outside in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight.
  • Butane: Stockpile extra canisters, but be mindful of temperature changes that can affect pressure.

By diversifying your cooking methods and ensuring ample fuel storage, you’ll be ready to cook no matter the situation.

The Disaster Matrix: Prioritizing Threats Like a Pro | episode 321

When it comes to prepping, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer number of potential threats. From natural disasters to economic collapse, the list feels endless. But what if there was a way to focus on the most important dangers first? Enter the Disaster Matrix – a simple but powerful tool that helps preppers prioritize based on probability and impact.

The Disaster Matrix is a grid that sorts threats into four categories, helping you identify where to focus your energy and resources. By assessing the likelihood of an event and the severity of its consequences, you can ensure you’re prepared for the right scenarios.

How to Build Your Matrix Start by brainstorming all possible threats. Think about your region – are you more likely to face hurricanes, wildfires, or economic instability? Once you have your list, rank each threat based on how probable it is and how severely it could affect your life.

  • High Probability/High Impact: Power outages, medical emergencies, economic downturns.
  • Low Probability/High Impact: EMP attacks, asteroid strikes.
  • High Probability/Low Impact: Seasonal storms, minor supply chain disruptions.
  • Low Probability/Low Impact: Brief fuel shortages or localized riots.

Focusing on high-probability, high-impact threats ensures you’re covering the most likely dangers first, like job loss or long-term power failures. These are the scenarios that could disrupt your life but are often ignored in favor of low-probability “doomsday” events.

The beauty of the Disaster Matrix is that it grows with you. Start small by preparing for everyday emergencies, then expand to address larger, less likely threats over time. This method keeps your prepping practical, logical, and achievable – exactly what every prepper needs to stay ahead of the unexpected.

Preserving food has always been essential for survival and culture, with each region developing unique techniques tailored to their environment. Let’s explore five fascinating food preservation methods from around the world.

Kimchi

A staple of Korean cuisine, kimchi is made by fermenting vegetables—most commonly napa cabbage and radishes—in a spicy, garlicky brine. This process relies on natural lactobacillus bacteria to preserve the vegetables while developing their signature tangy, spicy flavor. Packed with probiotics, kimchi is not just a preservation technique but also a health-boosting food.

Umeboshi

Japan offers umeboshi, salty and sour pickled plums. These fruits are packed in salt and left to ferment, creating an intensely flavorful and shelf-stable product. Umeboshi are often paired with rice or tea and have been prized for their purported health benefits, including aiding digestion and boosting energy.

Biltong

South Africa’s biltong is a protein-packed snack made by drying seasoned strips of meat—traditionally beef or game. Unlike jerky, biltong relies on vinegar and salt for preservation and is air-dried rather than smoked. This simple yet effective method has made biltong a beloved survival food for centuries.

Labneh

In the Middle East, labneh—a tangy yogurt cheese—is preserved by straining yogurt to remove whey and then storing the resulting thickened cheese in olive oil. This method extends the shelf life of the dairy product while infusing it with rich flavors. Labneh is often served with bread or as part of mezze spreads.

Preserved Lemons

In North Africa, lemons are preserved in salt and their own juices, transforming into a flavorful ingredient used in Moroccan tagines and other dishes. The preservation process softens the lemons and creates a uniquely intense citrus flavor that adds depth to savory recipes.

These diverse methods showcase humanity’s ingenuity in extending the life of food while enriching culinary traditions.
