In today's episode, Jason talks with Jouni Partanen about hunting in Finland. Jouni is the communication specialist for The Hunting Museum of Finland. He also holds a bachelors of Natural Resources in Forestry and a Master of Arts on Hunting in Finland, where he completed his thesis on hunting legislation of 1962 and role of Finnish Hunters’ Association. He is a lifelong hunter and the perfect person to talk to about today's topic. During our conversation, Jouni lets us in on various aspects of hunting in Finland including who is allowed to hunt, how to start hunting, methods of take, species pursued, and Finland's public perception of hunting. The conversation then turns to what got Jason seeking out Jouni, whitetail deer. They discuss how whitetail deer arrived in Finland, the current population numbers, how and when they are hunted, and issues the public and private businesses have with the current number. Spoiler alert...whitetail in Finland cause the same problems as they do in North America.

 In this episode, Jason concludes his interview with biologist Jeannine Fleegle. Jeannine Fleegle has worked with white-tailed deer in 3 states for almost 20 years.  She joined the Pennsylvania Game Commission's Deer & Elk Section in December of 2004. Fleegle earned her bachelor's degree in environmental science from the University of New England and her master's degree in fisheries and wildlife science from North Carolina State University. Prior to joining the Game Commission, Fleegle was as a natural resource specialist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, coordinating and managing the state’s Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance program. As part of the Deer & Elk Section, Fleegle is responsible for public outreach and communications producing numerous Game News articles, blog posts, brochures, and other outreach materials; maintaining the agency Ask the Deer Biologist account; and presenting on a variety of topics related to white-tailed deer.  Her other duties include urban deer management; coordinating CWD sample collection of hunter harvested deer; and contributing to the development of annual deer population assessments and antlerless allocation recommendations.  Fleegle is a certified wildlife biologist through The Wildlife Society and has been awarded a Special Recognition Award for Teamwork from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. In this week's episode, Jason talks with Thomas Keller of the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Tom is a Furbearer Biologist for the PGC and joins us to discuss the proposal to reintroduce the American Marten to Pennsylvania. During the discussion, Tom details how wildlife has historically been lost in Pennsylvania, how certain species are selected to be reintroduced, and how a feasibility study helps determine eligible species. In regards to the American Marten, Tom provides details on how the reintroduction proposal will work, why the PGC feels this reintroduction will be a success, and the impact American Martens will have on other wildlife. An in-depth discussion takes place on the diet of the American Marten, dispelling some common misinformation being spread on social media, and how the proposal will move forward-including how the public can get involved and learn more.

Susan is a member of United Blood Trackers, an organization dedicated to helping hunters find their lost game with the use of dogs and originally appear on Ep 59: The Benefits of Blood Tracking Dogs. In that episode, they talked about Susan's 2 accomplished beagles that she uses to help hunters in Pennsylvania find deer and bear after they have been shot. They talked about how the dogs work, why this is an important tool for hunters, and the do's and don'ts of tracking game before calling in the dogs.

This week, the focus is on training dogs. Susan gives us the general step by step process she uses to train her dogs to track. Some of the steps make perfect sense, others make sense once she explains her reasoning. If you have ever trained a dog, you'll understand that aspect! BONUS FULL INTERVIEW with biologist Jeannine Fleegle.

Jeannine Fleegle has worked with white-tailed deer in 3 states for almost 20 years.  She joined the Pennsylvania Game Commission's Deer & Elk Section in December of 2004.

Fleegle earned her bachelor's degree in environmental science from the University of New England and her master's degree in fisheries and wildlife science from North Carolina State University. Prior to joining the Game Commission, Fleegle was as a natural resource specialist for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, coordinating and managing the state’s Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) surveillance program.

As part of the Deer & Elk Section, Fleegle is responsible for public outreach and communications producing numerous Game News articles, blog posts, brochures, and other outreach materials; maintaining the agency Ask the Deer Biologist account; and presenting on a variety of topics related to white-tailed deer.  Her other duties include urban deer management; coordinating CWD sample collection of hunter harvested deer; and contributing to the development of annual deer population assessments and antlerless allocation recommendations. 

Fleegle is a certified wildlife biologist through The Wildlife Society and has been awarded a Special Recognition Award for Teamwork from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Drew is the Director of Conservation Partnerships for the National Wildlife Federation Great Lakes Regional Center, strengthening the federation’s partnerships with independent affiliate conservation organizations in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, as well as managing media outreach and communications for the region. Drew grew up in Central Lake, northern Michigan, near Lake Michigan, Torch Lake, and the Chain of Lakes. He graduated from Michigan State University’s James Madison College with a BA in Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy and earned his J.D. from Michigan State University College of Law.

Drew serves on the board of the Northern Michigan Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, 2% for Conservation, the Pigeon River Country State Forest Advisory Council, and is a member of multiple conservation and environmental organizations. He is also an outdoor writer, published in National Wildlife magazine and multiple regional outdoor magazines, earning several awards in craft for writing, video production, and podcasting from the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers, the Outdoor Writers Association of America, and 2% for Conservation.

When he is not doing all that, Drew lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with his wife Michele and son Noah, and spends his time fishing, paddling, camping, surfing, cross-country skiing, trail running, hiking, hunting, skateboarding, and training in his garage gym.

In today's episode, Jason and Talan talk to Pennsylvania Senator Dan Laughlin about PA Senate Bill 147...the Sunday Hunting Bill.

Senator Laughlin is a Republican representing PA Senate District 49 which encompasses Erie, PA and part of Erie County. He is the Chair of the Game & Fisheries committee and was one of the leaders in introducing SB 147. Along with Pennsylvania Senator Jim Brewster (D), they worked together to introduce a bill that would make lawful the hunting for fur bearers or game on 14 Sundays, as the Pennsylvania Game Commission deemed appropriate. Since the introduction of the bill, it faced opposition and has been amended to include harsher trespass language and reduced approval to 3 Sundays in a calendar year. Since amendment, it has been approved by the State Senate and will be debated and voted in the State House as early as September.

Today, we are going to talk about his Ph.D. dissertation from Texas A&M University that examined the effects of habitat fragmentation on the genetic diversity of ocelots. We also cover some of his post-doctoral research, which covers mammalian phylogenetics, patterns in the diversification of mammals, and snow leopard conservation genetics. He is well traveled, having conducted field expeditions, training biologists, and teaching genetics in Mongolia, China, Nepal, India, and Bhutan.
