03 Feb 20227. Two Ways to Foster a Culture of Feedback00:19:20

Send us a text

Do you get a knot in your stomach when someone says, “May I give you some feedback?” Maybe you automatically assume the feedback will be negative, and you get ready to defend yourself.

Feedback is essential for continued growth, yet so many of us are bad at giving and accepting it.

In this week’s episode, Kele discusses the 5 principles that you must keep in mind when giving someone effective feedback and what you need to do to encourage others to provide you with candid feedback.

Feedback is a two-way street. For your team to thrive, you have to foster an environment of giving and receiving feedback. That means you have to get better at providing specific and actionable feedback, AND your team has to become more comfortable with giving you and each other feedback.

There are 5 principles to keep in mind when giving someone effective feedback:

  • Make it specific.
  • Keep it balanced.
  • Keep it relevant.
  • Stay focused.
  • Follow up.

Once you know how to give actionable and impactful feedback it’s important to learn how to encourage your team to give you honest and helpful feedback.

To encourage your team to give you feedback, here are some helpful tips you can use:

  • Create an environment where people feel safe enough to give candid feedback.
  • Embrace feedback as a normal part of the work-day.
  • Some questions you can use to help you solicit feedback are:
    • How can I best support you?
    • What can I do differently when leading meetings?
    • What do you need from me?
    • What could I have done better to support you/the team?
    • What’s the ONE thing you’ve been wanting to tell me but you’ve been holding back?
  • Accept that it’s going to be uncomfortable, at least initially.
  • Listen without interrupting.
  • Thank the person for their feedback and own your mistakes.

Most of us didn’t know how to give or receive feedback when we start our careers, but if growth and cultivating a strong team is essential to us, we need to lean into feedback despite past experiences or how we might be feeling in the moment.

If you found today’s episode helpful, please share it with another leader or someone who’s shown leadership potential. I know they’ll thank you for it.

05 May 202211. How One Leader Is Helping Companies Build Inclusive Products For Equitable Outcomes With Dr. Dédé Tetsubayashi00:43:07

Send us a text

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) have been the buzz phrase in the last few years. Today, my guest addresses how this concept plays out in product development and management.

Dr. Dédé Tetsubayashi, Founder & CEO of incluu, is an Ethical Technologist and Social Scientist. She synergizes her lived experience as a Black queer woman with an invisible disability with her over 20 years of experience in ethical tech, product equity & inclusion as a catalyst for creating brave spaces and products for all. Her work empowers individuals and organizations committed to investing in equitable and accessible product development and design processes, unlocking their full potential in their products, people, and practices.

In our conversation, Dédé pulls back the curtain on what building products for equitable outcomes and non-discrimination means and why she founded her business, incluu.

We dive into some fascinating topics such as:

  • How straddling multiple identities played a role in shaping Dédé’s future and ultimate career choices.
  • Why relationship building and intentional curiosity are crucial in building a culture of inclusivity.
  • How the Incluu team helps companies and their teams understand their circles of influence and why it’s essential to increase those circles.
  • Bridging the gap between technology, justice, and ethics.
  • The biggest challenge facing leaders today is fear and functioning from a place of fear of the unknown.
  • Why a leader needs to hold strong beliefs loosely that will enable them to have a transparent dialogue.
  •  Why do leaders need to be aware of their knowledge gaps and understand when it’s time to ask for help.
  • Dédé recommends two books that offer a deeper dive into how high tech tools profile, police, and punish the poor and reinforce the inequality in our society: Automating Inequality by Virginia Eubanks and Weapons of Math Destruction by Cathy O’Neil.

19 May 202212. How To Manage Your Saboteur And Change Your Disempowered Thoughts With Sarah Benenson Goldberg00:48:21

Send us a text

Whether you call it your saboteur, sabotaging voice, or inner critic, we have all fallen prey to our critical internal voice. There’s so much literature about the effect of ignoring that internal voice, and today, we’re switching things up and giving you tips and strategies to confront that voice head-on and reclaim your power.

In my conversation this week, my guest, Sarah Benenson Goldberg, breaks down how to manage your sabotaging voice and the importance of having a vision for yourself.

Sarah is a seasoned consultant, coach, and communication expert focusing on developing influential and high-performing leaders who want to thrive in complex global environments. She brings a unique blend of strategic and empathetic insight to her clients’ roles as leaders. With a commitment to growing the whole person, Sarah supports clients in heightening self-awareness while embracing strengths and uncovering potential blind spots. Her coaching process focuses on adopting the mindset of a leader and evolves to include leadership behaviors, communication skills, and strategic thinking.

The key takeaway from our conversation is that managing your sabotaging voice starts with awareness of your thoughts and feelings that generate your behaviors. Being a leader starts with doing the internal work first.

Here’s the episode at a glance:

  • [02:09] There’s a big distinction between having a vision and a plan, and everything starts with the vision.
  • [10:13] Myers Briggs captures the most innate and authentic you, and deep down inside your core, you don’t change.
  • [12:57] Everyone has a sabotaging voice, and the best way to deal with it is to manage it. And it all starts with raising that voice to intense consciousness and noticing what happens in your body when your sabotaging voice speaks up.
  • [19:03] One of the questions is, how do you know when you’ve gotten to perfect? Do you have a checklist? The first piece is to recognize there is no such thing as perfect.
  • [20:44] Often, we hold ourselves back from offering an idea or opinion because we’re so worried about being judged. We forget that whether the idea is good or bad, or somewhere in the middle, it’s often a springboard for somebody else’s idea.
  • [23:54] Recognizing your sabotaging voice starts with being familiar with the themes that come up.
  • [25:12] Your saboteur only lives in the past and future, not in the present. When you keep telling yourself, “If only I had done that, or why  was I so stupid?” The future is “What if this happens? What if they don’t like me? What if I fail?” It’s all the what-ifs. When you are in the present, the saboteur doesn’t live there. Bring yourself to the present; literally, put your feet on the floor and feel the weight of your feel. Put your hand where you’re feeling the tension of your clenched jaw or your stomach dropping.
  • [28:33] Confidence and empowerment is the greatest tool to back our saboteur.
  • [33:06] Having a vision is critical. It doesn’t have to be well-formed. It’s just a vision you always want to be moving towards.
  • [35:43] Often, our sabotaging voice stops us from having a vision. It might be saying, “Oh, you could never do that.”

09 Jun 202213. How To Lead Without A Title - 9 Ways To Showcase & Strengthen Your Leadership Skills00:27:42

Send us a text

Are you an aspiring leader? This episode is for you. This episode is also for you if you're an experienced leader with a team with lots of potential.

Today's episode focuses on those of you who want to move into a leadership position. Partly because I haven't touched on this topic yet, I recently received a question on this issue from one of my coaching clients. Her question was, "How can I show my leadership potential when I'm not in a leadership or managerial role, AND I don't seem to have the support of my immediate supervisor."

Some of you are natural leaders, while others must work on their skills because it isn't second nature.

Here's what you can expect from this conversation that deals with nine ways you can demonstrate and strengthen your leadership skills.

  1. Offer your support - Look for what needs doing and do it. Don't wait for someone to tell you what to do. Lighten your leader's load, and help your teammates succeed. Try something simple like, "How can I support today?"
  2. Master your craft - become the go-to person in your expertise or field. Others will pay attention by consistently showing you're an expert in your area. They'll be asking for your opinion or wanting to work with you.
  3. Be passionate about what you do - passion is contagious. We love being around people who are passionate about their craft and light up when they talk about what they do. When you're passionate about what you do, it'll be reflected in your attitude and how you show up.
  4. Listen to others - One of the few downsides of being passionate is that we often want to dive into the conversation first, but learning to listen to others is as vital as speaking first. We're true leaders when we invite others into the conversation and hold space for them. This lets us really get to know those around us and what makes them tick.
  5. Speak up and communicate clearly - It doesn't matter whether you share ideas, solutions, or your vision. Always be ready to communicate clearly and succinctly.
  6. Actively seek out leadership opportunities - Don't wait for others to ask if you can lead a project, run an event or put together a presentation. Demonstrate initiative, raise your hand voluntarily, and do your best work when you get the nod. By consistently raising your hand when new opportunities arise, you're demonstrating yourself as the go-to person when solutions are needed.
  7. Come to the table with solutions - Don't focus on problems. Offer solutions you've been thinking about or that you've been researching. When you're solution-focused instead of problem-driven, others in the room start noticing.
  8. Have a growth mindset - as you practice and flex your leadership muscles, you won't always get it right. You have to keep going and keep leading. Leadership is hard, but it's rewarding. Making mistakes as an aspiring leader doesn't mean you've failed.
  9. Get a mentor and mentor others - Invest in your growth and find the right person or persons to mentor you. Successful leaders know that they can't walk the journey alone. When you have the right person to answer your questions, offer advice and help you navigate your career, you gain confidence in yourself and what you have to offer.

Are you ready to go out there and showcase your leadership skills? I hope so! Take one or two tips you heard today and start leading!

14 Jul 202215. Right Leader, Right Time: A Conversation With Leader And Author, Bob Jordan00:36:56

Send us a text

Bob Jordan is co-founder and head of leadership at interim execs based in Chicago. They specialize in placing leaders in the right positions at the right time. Bob is also co-author of the book Right Leader, Right Time.

In our conversation, Bob talks about the importance of having the right people in the right positions and his recently published book, Right Leader, Time which he co-authored with Olivia Wagner.

Here's a snapshot of our conversation:

  • Bob discusses why the business world has become a lot more project-based and what that means for interim executives.
  • We can't simply practice being better leaders. Ultimately we have to implement the skills we've learned.
  • What very successful executives do, especially if there's a crisis:  the first thing the leader needs to do is listen, and not just listen to the people on the board, but get down on the shop floor, get down to the administrative assistants, and listen, because this collective intelligence at most organizations, it's already there.
  •  Bob breaks down the four styles of leaders, namely Fixer, Artist, Builder, and Strategist.
  • The Fixer - this person is a leader who will keep returning to the burning building. The Fixer always needs a situation to fix or a problem to solve. If there is none? The Fixer will break something so that they have something to fix.
  • The Artist - this leader views their world like a canvas or a piece of clay to be molded.
  • The Builder - A builder has market domination on the brain and can grow and scale a small team to dominate the industry or develop a particular product until it's the most popular product.
  • The Strategist - The Strategist is a leader who can deal with complex and large organizations.
  • Bob also discusses the three pillars someone needs to excel in leadership: 1. Embrace your particular leadership style. 2. Collaborate consistently. 3. Solve problems.

If you enjoyed this conversation with Bob Jordan, please share it with another leader or aspiring leader. Let's support each other in becoming the great leaders that we know we are capable of being.

04 Aug 202216. Coaching Questions That Elevate Your Team’s Thinking00:24:04

Send us a text

Welcome to the August series! This month we’re focusing on improving your leadership communication.

For the last 3 months, I’ve had the pleasure of coaching some strong women on their communication and leadership skills. Some of these women are leaders managing teams of various sizes, and others have the goal of becoming leaders within the next 6-12 months.

We work on various skills regarding how they come across as leaders and how they communicate and lead their teams to grow and thrive in seemingly challenging situations.

Today we’re talking about a question one of my group coaching clients asked recently. Her question was:

  • How can I ensure that I coach my new team instead of constantly solving their problems or always telling them what they need to do?

We had a rich group conversation on what coaching is and what it is NOT. Often people use coaching and mentoring interchangeably, but they are different.

While mentorship describes a relationship in which a more knowledgeable or experienced person guides and cultivates the professional development or growth of another, coaching focuses on helping the coachee unlock their own potential. The coach doesn’t typically provide answers but coaxes and supports the coachee to solve their own problems.

Mentorship plays an essential role in the growth of team members, but it typically falls outside the purview of the manager/subordinate role. I believe informal coaching is the way to go if you manage a team and want to help them grow and thrive.

Sometimes, simply asking someone a few questions can help them get unstuck and find a solution to a particular problem or how to approach a seemingly daunting task or project.

In this episode of the Communicate to Lead podcast, I’m offering you some dynamic coaching questions that you can use to help your team improve their performance, solve problems and make better decisions. You can also use these questions to help them learn a new skill or achieve their career goals.

Some things to keep in mind before we get into the coaching questions are:

  • Coaching is not about telling your team what to do.
  • Focus on solutions, not problems, when coaching one of your team members.
  • Keep in mind that when coaching someone, it’s about them, not you.
  • Before the coaching conversation, ask yourself what you need to do to have a productive session.
  • Don’t be afraid of silences.
  • Don’t be afraid to encourage your coachee to delve deeper into their thoughts.
  • Help them deepen their thinking with a few simple questions.

In the rest of the episode, we dive into 20 different coaching questions that you can use any time you want to help someone get unstuck or elevate their thinking.

Grab pen and paper and prepare to jot down helpful questions you can implement immediately. I know because I’ve offered these same questions to my coaching clients, and I always get feedback that the questions worked!

25 Aug 202217. Do You Find Yourself Over-Apologizing At Work? Do This Instead.00:22:53

Send us a text

Do you find yourself over-apologizing when you don’t need to? At work or home, constantly saying sorry is a habit you must break.

In today’s episode, we talk about why some of us constantly apologize, how it impacts our credibility, and what we should do instead. Check out this Pantene commercial that beautifully illustrates this phenomenon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcGKxLJ4ZGI

I’m not saying that we should never apologize. There are certain instances when a genuine apology is the right thing to do, and it’s a powerful way to mend relationships.

But there are genuine circumstances when you don’t need to or shouldn’t apologize.

I used to be a serial over-apologizer. I would often apologize out of empathy for someone or when I felt bad about something. For example, if a friend’s car were wrecked by someone else, I’d say, “Gosh, I’m so sorry! That sucks.”

Or I needed someone to do something work-related; I would say, “I’m sorry, I need you to complete this task so we can get it to the client by tomorrow.”

It wasn’t until a friend and colleague made me aware of what I was doing and how it hurt my credibility that I actively worked to stop this bad habit. I realized I could show empathy without apologizing.

If you constantly over-apologize, you are not alone. I was where you are, and I know of others who struggle with this habit. Today’s episode is all about giving you tips and strategies to empower you to break this habit because it is not serving you or your career.

In this episode, we’ll get into:

  • Identifying if you tend to over-apologize.
  • Understanding why some struggle with this habit.
  • Unpacking the impact of saying sorry has on you and your credibility.
  • Nine strategies you can implement immediately instead of saying sorry

It’s time you take your power back and communicate directly and confidently at work.

Grab pen and paper and jot down the 9 strategies you can apply immediately and notice the difference in your communication and how you come across to others.

Share this episode with other serial apologizers. And if you realize over-apologizing doesn’t apply to you, share it with someone who will benefit from the strategies. I bet you’ll find at least one person in your life who’ll appreciate you making them aware of their habit.

Get ready to take a deeper dive into:

  • The different ways you can authentically connect with your team by applying some easy ideas and tips.

Send us a text

Authenticity in conversations fosters trust, transparency, and vulnerability, which leads to a stronger sense of connection. Effective communication involves creating a clear, concise, and relatable message to the audience.

In this week’s episode, I’m having a conversation with Eliza Leoni, a workshop facilitator, coach, and founder of Talk Like a Person, a San Francisco-based communications coaching, training, and consulting company. She has spent over a decade facilitating, designing programs, and coaching leaders at Fortune 500 companies.

She developed a passion for helping people break down the self-consciousness ("What am I doing with my hands?") and jargon ("let’s circle back on the soft-launch of our extended system capabilities vis-a-vis maximizing ROI and synergistically up-leveling our solutions”) that get in the way of real connection with their listeners.

Eliza believes being a good listener and empathizing with others' emotions are essential qualities of a successful leader. She believes in the power of authentic conversations and thinks every moment is an opportunity to learn and grow as a person and a leader.

Tune in to today’s episode to hear more about:

  • Why "Clarity is Kind" is important in effective leadership and communication.
  • How authentic leaders can embrace feedback in their new journey.
  • How leaders can embrace their authentic leadership.
  • The importance of knowing your audience and seeing things from their perspective.
  • Why embracing failure is key to being a more authentic leader.

And here's an exciting bonus: I've crafted a comprehensive FREE guide based on today’s conversation, so you don’t have to take notes while listening to the episode.

The journey of crafting a personal brand is transformative, often influenced by pivotal moments. As a coaching client shared with me, she realized that her personal brand had taken a backseat while focusing on tasks in the last few years. I could absolutely relate to what she shared. When I was younger, personal branding felt secondary to doing an excellent job and accomplishments, but the reality is quite different.

Crafting your personal brand is crucial, especially as a female leader in a world filled with specific norms and expectations of how women are expected to show up.

In today’s podcast episode, we dive into the significance of a personal brand in leadership and the practical steps to building and amplifying it.

Here’s the episode at a glance:

  • Why personal branding is essential and how it will benefit you.
  • Getting clear on what personal branding is and what it is NOT.
  • Understanding your current brand to build a stronger one.
  • Unpacking the critical elements of building and maintaining your brand.
  • Diving into four key questions to start building a stronger personal brand.

Remember, your personal brand is your legacy—a reflection of your values, vision, and mission. Craft it thoughtfully, make it memorable, and make it your unique imprint.

If you're eager to access the complete guide detailing these strategies and insights, click here for a copy of the FREE Guide to Authentic Personal Branding for Women emailed directly to you. 11 Nov 20211. Communicate tirelessly and listen more deeply: How to stay connected with your remote team00:10:21

Send us a text

Welcome to the very first episode of Communicate to Lead

I bet you know a few leaders who inspire you and who you look to for leadership guidance. I definitely do!

When the pandemic hit us last year, there were some great examples of great leaders and those who weren’t ready to lead.

I’ve always been passionate about leadership and what makes a truly great leader. I’m talking about those leaders who know when to listen and when to speak, who know their strengths and weaknesses, and never hesitate to communicate that to the people they’re leading. I’ve also been inspired by leaders who don’t necessarily have the title, but they’re still leading. Their communication is clear, concise, and compelling enough to inspire others to take action.

Great leaders possess a clear vision and focus. And they know how to communicate that vision, so others buy into it.

When you communicate clearly and effectively, your team knows what to expect of you and what they need to do.

Two aspects are important when communicating with your team, and it’s even more important when your team is working remotely:

  • Communicate tirelessly and listen deeply

  1. Communicating tirelessly means not waiting for big moments or big news before you communicate with your team.
    1. Communicate often and quickly, even if it simply means reaching out to your people and finding out how you can best support them.
    2. Keep your message specific and brief by speaking in headlines and sharing ONE big idea with your audience.
    3. Choose various communication channels that will work for you and your team.

  1. Listen deeply to what your team shares with you.
    1. Effective communication is a two-way street. Part of communicating tirelessly also means listening to what your team has to say.
    2. Invite your team to speak, but don’t force or make anyone feel obligated to share their thoughts or opinions.
    3. Ask questions to engage your audience in a conversation.
    4. Create a safe environment for people to share their thoughts or concerns without being judged or criticized.

Whether you choose to communicate more often or listen more deeply (or perhaps you decide to do both!) I hope you found the tips in today’s episode helpful.

09 Dec 20214. When Layoffs Are Communicated Without Empathy Or Compassion - A Case Study00:10:59

Send us a text

How would you rate your level of self-awareness? Do you know how you come across to your team, or do you assume to know what they think of your communication style?

This last week or so, I’ve been intently following a story of what NOT to do when you need to lay off employees. At this point, it seems the CEO of Better.com agrees that he could have handled the entire situation much better.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, a week or so ago, the CEO of Better.com laid off 900 employees on a group Zoom call. You can check out one of the video clips on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dFpD_ryzNo

Here’s the episode at a glance:

  • Often we think we know how we come across, but we don’t because we don’t ask our team or audience for feedback.
  • A big part of self-awareness is knowing the difference between intent versus impact. Your intent might be one thing, but what your audience hears is entirely different.
  • In this episode, I discuss the case study of the CEO of Better.com, a direct mortgage lender, and how his message went wrong on a Zoom call.
  • I use the communication pillars of messaging and presence to outline how the Zoom call unfolded.
  • There are four questions you must ask yourself when preparing a message for your team if you want to be seen as a respected and influential leader:
    • Who is your audience?
    • What do they care about?
    • How do they feel about you?
    • What and how much do they know about your message? Will it be a complete surprise?

Dive into the episode and get ready to learn how NOT to lay off your team members when you have to.
