18 Sep 2024 | Episode 25: Suzanne Westenhoeffer | 01:29:57
No one ever accused Suzanne of being subtle, not the shuttle driver who took her to the airport, the woman she was in line with at the grocery store yesterday and certainly not her audiences. Subtle, she is not. After 25 years of groundbreaking, stereotype-shattering and brutally honest comedy, she’s not about to start pulling punches now. The kid from Amish Country who began her comedy career on a dare is celebrating a quarter century of out, open, no-holds-barred comedy. Suzanne tells the truth. The truth is life is funny, especially when it’s fermented in Suzanne’s mind. That’s why she could never be in the closet, making her a trailblazer when she started doing stand-up in the 1990s. She was the first openly lesbian comedian with an HBO Special and the first openly lesbian comedian on “Late Night with David Letterman.” Heck, she was on Sally Jesse Raphael in 1991 on a show called “Breaking the Lesbian Stereotype…Lesbians Who Don’t Look Like Lesbians.” From “OMG, a lesbian has long hair and wears make up” to “I went to Helen and Jane’s wedding last weekend,” that’s how far we’ve come in the 25 years Suzanne has been telling her truth to audiences all over the world. Some of that is certainly thanks to her candor, courage and charisma. Suzanne never does the same show twice. She can’t. She doesn’t write anything down. She charges boldly onto the stage and what happens is always a mystery and a delight. Enjoy a wild night of comedy in a city near you. https://www.suzannew.com/events/

Whether performing her hilarious yet touching solo show, “7,000 Sailors Can’t Be Wrong,” doing stand-up comedy and voiceovers, or basking in the glow of being featured in “The Aristocrats,” she’s a busy gal. Carrie’s stand-up career was foreshadowed by her graduation from UC Berkeley with a degree in Rhetoric. She was barely able to eke out a living posing provocative questions that required no response. Apparently, there’s not a lot of call for that. While working as a receptionist a Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, Carrie began “professional party guesting,” which led to being handily escorted out of many fashionable homes in the Bay Area. A harrowing stint as the emcee of an all-male strip show made Carrie dream of spending quality time with a man who could read a book without illustrations. The road memories: Carrie’s the only comic who can say that she opened up for both Jack Jones AND the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the same decade. But lest we forget, there are also sojourns to thirty-six U.S. states, six provinces in Canada, cruise ships, English television, and even a week in Guam. She’s headlined at CAROLINE’S, THE PUNCH LINES, THE IMPROVISATIONS, THE COMEDY STORES, and CAESAR’S TAHOE, to name a few. In addition to the road, Carrie was regularly on television doing every stand-up ensemble show from PBS’ COMEDY TONIGHT (which she later hosted for two award-winning seasons), AN EVENING AT THE IMPROV (later hosting a BEST-OF episode), to guesting on every talker from THE SALLY JESSE RAPHAEL SHOW, MARILU, VICKI1, THE LATE SHOW, ‘A’ LIST, LEEZA, to CAROLINE’S, and COMEDY CENTRAL. Her original Comedy Tonight performance was nominated for a local Emmy award, but was beaten out by a dog show. Lots of prisoners wrote letters. CRISTINA & FRIENDS was to be a precursor to The View, with Cristina Ferrare filling Barbara Walters’ pumps. Carrie was there too, enjoying the live talk format in addition to the clothes, hair, and makeup every day. Then Carrie was hired by Roseanne to write stand-up and special projects like THE MTV MUSIC AWARDS, and the monologue and sketches when Roseanne hosted SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. This segued into three seasons as a Story Editor on ROSEANNE, where Carrie ran her own “joke room.” She guest-starred on the sitcom as well. When Roseanne conceived her daily talker, Carrie was an original hire. You’d have to buy her a big strappin’ cocktail to hear any more about that. A book, “My Mom’s Meaner Than Your Mom: True Stories of Mean Mothers,” is in Development. It just never ends. Carrie practices anusara yoga and is trying to make the world a better place, one laugh at a time.

16 Sep 2024 | Episode 14: Tommy Bowes (Lead Singer Tower of Power) | 01:05:35
In his seven years as the lead singer of the legendary Tower of Power, Tommy Bowes garnered nothing but rave reviews. Those in the know are aware of the talent it takes to front a ten piece band with five powerful horns, and reviewers have consistently praised Bowes’ “high range, powerful voice, and unique versatility." Touring almost non-stop with Tower, Tommy sang to audiences in Japan and Europe, with sold-out shows in Tokyo, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, Paris and London. He crisscrossed the United States and Canada performing in venues from small clubs to the giant Newport and Playboy Jazz Festivals, Milwaukee's renowned Summerfest and an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. During this time, Tower recorded two albums, Monster on a Leash and T.O.P. with Tommy on lead vocals. Influenced in his early years by artists from Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan to Aerosmith, Yes and James Taylor, Tommy played guitar and sang, working the bar scene in Boston from 1976 to 1982. In 1982 he moved to New York City, continuing along those same lines in small clubs. It was there, that he was fortunate enough to meet and work with quite a few phenomenal musicians. He played bass, composed for and sang with the band G-Jam (later becoming Bang the Drum), which was prominent in the Village scene, from 1982 to 1986. Known for his ability to make many styles his own, he became an in-demand session singer. In 1987, Tommy joined Funk Filharmonik as lead vocalist. He worked with them until 1989 before leaving for California and TOP. He returned in 1995, and continues to work with them today. In 2008, they released their first CD, entitled Everybody Get Down, after 24 years in existence. You can check out the band at www.funkfilharmonik.com. In 2000, he met up with Dr. Dave Beyers, who co-founded the Steely Dan tribute band known as Stealin Dan and was invited to sit in. Things clicked and Tom was invited to join the band. Considering the fact that he was a huge Steely Dan fan and had absolutely no fear of spreading himself too thin... he jumped at the chance and began crisscrossing Long Island on two fronts. The members of Stealin Dan eventually parted ways and split into two separate bands. FM - A Steely Dan Tribute, of which Tommy is currently a member, performs regularly in the NYC area. Along those same lines, Bowes also currently fronts another tribute band called Sir Duke - A Stevie Wonder Tribute which can also been heard in the NYC area. Besides recording two albums with TOP and maintaining an almost constant touring schedule, Bowes still found time for writing and studio projects. His work has extended internationally with appearances on the hit German television shows, Schmitenander and Ohne Filter. He has worked in the commercial industry singing for the likes of Range Rover in Japan, Verizon, Oprah, Sesame Street and Nickelodeon, just to name a few. His vocals were featured on the San Francisco Giants theme song. Tom has also done extensive voice-over work on various projects. Over the years, Tommy has had the pleasure of performing along side a wide range of artists including Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, YES drummer Alan White, Roger Daltrey, Dave Mason, Queen Latifah, The Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald, Spike Edney and Jamie Moses from Queen, Mark Hudson, Greg Adams, Will Lee, Michelle Shocked and many others. He can also be heard in some major motion pictures including, White Palace (Universal – 1990), View From the Top (Miramax-2003) and Shaolin Soccer(Miramax-2004). In April of 1995, Bowes left Tower of Power, took some time off to breathe a little and think about the next phase of his musical life. He has since been living in New Jersey, working on various projects for other artists. In 2012, Tommy was honored to have been invited to perform with the legendary band Blood, Sweat & Tears as lead vocalist on their summer tour.

The London press dubbed his act “an American original art form,” later to be known as stand-up comedy. “Stand up,” it seems, was slang for a boxer who could take a beating in the ring and not keel over. The term worked well for a fellow (and it would only be a fellow, for a long time) who could get in front of a crowd armed only with his wits and stay upright. If you didn’t know any of that – well, neither did I, until I laughed my way through Ritch Shydner’s History of Stand-Up Comedy at the intimate Yard Theater on Melrose Avenue. You may know Shydner from appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, Late Night with David Letterman, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, or his own HBO stand-up special. He’s written for Roseanne, The Jeff Foxworthy Show and Titus. But at heart, it turns out, Ritch Shydner is a historian. “It was Phyllis Diller who wanted me to write a book about stand-up comedy,” says Shydner, checking in from his home in Asheville, North Carolina. “I started on it, but it was reading like a textbook and I couldn’t think of anything worse than writing an unfunny book about comedy.” So he and director J. Elvis Weinstein (Mystery Science Theater 3000) put it on its feet. Now Shydner presents his own “humorous lecture” in clubs and on cruise ships, and is currently developing it for off- Broadway and as a limited series. The hardest part of putting the show together, he says, was figuring out how to contain it. “It’s 160 years in 90 minutes – I try to cover the big changes and big moments, but there’s so much.” Turns out, when you cherry-pick through a century and a half of jokes, the audience is in for a lotta laughs. The format is loosely structured around big changes like new technology and historical moments, changes that shaped the way comedy looked and sounded. The introduction of the microphone took us from Mark Twain lecturing at a women’s auxiliary, to Will Rogers selling out Carnegie Hall. The lecture stage begat the vaudeville stage, but then Prohibition drove comedy into the speakeasy. W.C. Fields was actually arrested in 1905, just for talking about drinking. The introduction of radio rendered slapstick gags and funny faces obsolete, and also introduced the network censor, who literally blue-penciled things you can’t say on the radio. This is why comics who used bad language were said to be “working blue.” It was the LP that allowed people to listen to what they damn well wanted in the privacy of their own home, which let stand-ups from Redd Foxx to Mort Sahl to George Carlin encroach on the family friendly Jack Bennys and Bob Hopes. Television brought back slapstick, but it also brought back censorship… until a disillusioned post-Vietnam public and the advent of cable TV unleashed the likes of Sam Kinison. Shydner runs through all this plus the influence of social media, YouTube and the podcast at a gallop, and he says it kills him to think of all the great comics he still had to
