17 Jul 2022 | 05. Richard Gill | 00:40:52
In this episode I spoke to blogger, podcaster and comedy fan Richard Gill, who talked about his earliest comedy shows, the Edinburgh festival, making the comedian laugh, and saying positive things. I think I finally ran into Richard Gill at the Water Rats in North London in 2021, at one of Vix Leyton's excellent Comedy Arcade panel shows. Rich and I were well aware of each other's comedy pedigree by then and despite being surrounded by Vix Leyton, Rich Wilson, Robin Ince and Robin Morgan, we spend most of the remainder of the evening chatting with each other. Since then we've become firm friends in comedy and run into each other constantly, but now that we recognise each other, we can stop for a drink and a long dialogue about the exciting comedy we've seen since we last met. His blog "A Rich Comic Life" in which he archives the many shows he has seen over the years, has been called "a rare and wonderful thing" and it's a pleasure to know someone who loves live comedy (almost) as much as I do. 21 May 2023 | 37. Sara Palomarr | 00:44:49
In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Sara Palomarr who talked about the mystery of greeting cards, the power of a duo and not being Buster Keaton. Sara is another comedian I happened upon during the pandemic lockdowns. Their videos online, both solo and with their Daft Duo partner Angela Legg intrigued me and when I saw that the Daft Duo would be performing at The 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, I decided to check them out. When I went to the show as part of the Free Festival, it was a slow day and sadly I was the only one in the audience. Sara and Angela decided they would do the show anyway and I really enjoyed the performance which was a mixture of stand-up, song, dance, clowning, and slapstick. It was very energetic and lots of fun. When the show was over I offered some money (as it was the Free Festival) and they agreed a selfie of the three of us would be enough. It was a sweet way to end what had been a delightful hour, and I was very happy to see how well the show was subsequently reviewed. Sara continues to perform as a stand-up in Scotland and I'm sure will go from strength to strength as their career develops and grows. 20 Jul 2022 | 06. Adele Cliff | 00:44:22
In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Adele Cliff, who talked about one-liners, working with a director, zoom gigs, writer's rooms, her new Edinburgh show and her forthcoming podcast. I was first charmed by Adele Cliff's wit and whimsy when I saw her show "Undershare" at the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe, then I saw her at the 2020 Leicester Comedy Festival in the mixed bill "A Punchline Hour" and of course she won that year's UK Pun Championship. In the year that followed I was not deprived of her joke-writing skill as her multiple appearances with the UK Pun Off among others, kept me fed with quick quips. Adele's show "In The Dark", which we talk about in this episode, I first saw her working on for the 2021 online Leicester Comedy Festival and it was at the second outing of this the following year that we finally met. It was a pleasure to have this chat with Adele Cliff because she is as clever as she is funny, and as engaging as she is entertaining. 28 May 2023 | 38. Michelle Shaughnessy | 00:47:05
In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Michelle Shaughnessy who talked about too high expectations, opening up to audiences, and knowing your worth. I was aware of Michelle as a comedian before she came to the UK in March of 2022, and had heard her 2020 album 'Botoxic' on Spotify. I was delighted to be able to see her 2023 work in progress show at the Leicester Comedy Festival, which was dominated by the audience-interactive style favoured by comedians like Trevor Lock and Russell Hicks. Michelle is a gifted comic with a naturally disarming manner that easily ingratiates her with her audience. She has a curiosity about people that makes her as confident in the conversation as in her material, and an earnestness that makes her relatable and endearing. She is also a wonderful person to talk to. Instagram @michellesfunny Twitter @michellesfunny The Comedy Nerd Instagram @The ComedyNerd Comedy in a Nutshell Instagram @ComedyInANutshell

In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Lorraine Hoodless, who talked about getting what you need from a work in progress, theme nights, her 2022 Edinburgh show "Bumpy", and being inclusive. During the Lockdown of 2020 and on into 2021, Lorraine Hoodless was a regular fixture on my household calendar with her Instagram shows "Cock-Tagi-Con", and later work in progress streams for "According to Everyone Else". I found her easy charm and ready wit engaging and her conversation in this episode is intelligent, forthright and delightful. Update: I was delighted to finally see Lorraine Hoodless perform live at 2022's Edinburgh Fringe in her show "Bumpy". 20 Mar 2023 | 32. Kate Martin | 00:45:39
In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Kate Martin, who talked about women in comedy, talking to the crowd, and trying to have a normal life. Kate Martin is one of those comedians I first encountered through my laptop screen during the pandemic lockdowns. It's not always easy to appreciate the talent of a comic confined in such a way, but I knew I liked her immediately. She has an easy-going, earthy style no doubt enhanced by her no-nonsense northern tone, and a warmth of character and a ready wit that is captivating. My most enduring memory of the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe was spending my last evening in the company of some wonderful comics including Kate. Following her marvellous appearance on the Comedy Arcade, she decided it would be fun to peer over my camera while I was attempting to take a selfie with some comedians, and so it was, as the laughter in the photo can attest. After this, she and I and a group of cherished comedians went for, what for me was the final drink of the festival, and an evening in such good company was the cherry on my festival cake. In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Alex Hylton, who talked about the worst Jongleurs gig, high-fiving your partner, and hanging out with Good Kids at an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet. Alex Hylton hails from Manchester but has made Leicester his home, and it was here at the 2020 Leicester Comedy Festival that we met. He is an energetic performer and dedicated promoter of the local comedy scene, and I recognised an individual with a true passion for comedy. It was no surprise to hear him spoken of affectionately throughout the festival, and a delight when his third show "Get Rich or Die Cryin'" won Best Show at that year's Awards. It was two years before I saw Alex again, and he hadn't lost any of the energy and passion that are the true hallmarks of his character. It's a pleasure to know someone so synonymous with the comedy of Leicester and the Midlands not only for his devotion to local comedy, but for his hilarious and heartfelt stand-up. In this episode I spoke with creator and Director of the Leicester Comedy Festival Geoff Rowe, who talked about playing the piano badly, the Tony Slattery next door, and a lifetime contribution. The annual Leicester Comedy Festival is the largest comedy festival in Europe and the longest running in Britain. Within it's umbrella it encompasses the UK Kids' Comedy Festival, the UK Pun Championship, the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year Award, the Silver Stand-up for over-55s, lectures, interviews and more. I volunteer at the festival each year and its always a highlight in my calendar not least because of my love of comedy - where else would I be, seriously? - but also the city and its people are welcoming and provide a wonderful atmosphere for comedy. It's been my pleasure to come to know some of the people involved in the festival in my own small way, and I'm the richer for it. Plus, you know, comedy. In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Hajar J. Woodland who talked about writing a Christmas song for the Spice Girls, no thin jokes, confidence in religion and nice tits. I was delighted to finally meet Hajar, albeit briefly, at her inaugural comedy night at the Cellar Magnifique in Woking. I like to support/check out new comedy clubs and venues and I knew of Hajar a little from the circuit. It was a great night of comedy and a real success. Hajar is a fine up-and-coming comedian with a lot to say and I for one look forward to hearing her put a voice to the great deal of subjects she clearly has in reserve. I heard about Roman on the circuit and saw that he was performing at the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe on a split bill with actress and comedian Thomasin Lockwood, so I decided to check it out. I immediately enjoyed Roman’s enthusiasm and the joy he expressed in his smile clearly endeared him quickly to the audience. I saw him again shortly after at a new comedy night in Woking and he was kind enough to ‘recognise a friendly face’ and greeted me with that same enthusiastic smile. I've enjoyed seeing Jamie as both an act and as an MC for the last few years at Fulham Comedy Club, Vauxhall Comedy Club, and various other London locations. I'm always loathe to commit to a favourite comedian but I would definitely rate Jamie as one of the best MCs I've seen and it's been great to see him develop from spots to last summer's split bill at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to his current work in progress, with which he will make his solo hour debut at this year's Edinburgh Festival. He is also a lot of fun to be around, sharing my passions for live comedy, roast dinners, and social drinking. Kathy is a successful performer as half of sketch duo Horseplay and an unsurprising award winner. When I first saw Kathy perform material from her upcoming Edinburgh solo debut I'll admit I was a little taken aback by her alternative take on character comedy, but Kathy inhabits her subjects with wry observation and utter conviction. Her abstract approach to sending up everyday objects is novel and the the way she brings "friendly absurdity" to the mundane and seriousness to the ridiculous is entirely hilarious. Claire was described by Time Out London as "one of the smartest, funniest sketch comedians" recommending her as one of four comedians to watch in 2022, and her online videos have attracted millions of views. In the last few years I've seen Claire perform live and online, and she's been a delight. Her character comedy videos are always very funny and she says the word "mindfulness" in as funny a way as I'll probably ever hear, but I also enjoy seeing Claire performing straight stand-up, because she radiates a warmth and a joy in the performance that is as endearing as some of her characters are disturbing. In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Stella Graham, who talked about comedy in New Zealand, wasting an hour, hiding at the back, and ringing Highways England. Stella has been going for some time now and is a superbly accomplished comedian. Although familiar with Stella's work here and there, the first time I saw a full show was "Undercurrent" as part of 2021's Leicester Comedy Festival which was entirely online for obvious reasons. Fortunately at 2022's Leicester, I was able to see Stella in person performing "Porcupine". At a recent mixed bill in Kingston-upon-Thames, I chatted with Stella for about half an hour about comedy in general and she revealed a little of her inner nerd's love of comedy. In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Aidan Goatley, who talked about Billy Connelly, his 5-star Edinburgh show 10 Films With My Dad, his 2022 Edinburgh show Tenacious, and being nice. I saw "10 Films with My Dad" at the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe and thoroughly enjoyed it, something I should've expected given that it had been a huge hit at the Fringe year after year since 2011. I met Aidan after he performed his show "Tenacious" at the 2022 Hastings Comedy Festival , and spent I-don't-know-how-long just chatting about comedy and his shows. I met Lisa May in March 2023, when I found out about her comedy night in Surbiton, South-West London. I try to support new nights and new comedians when I can, so when I saw there were ten comedians on the bill, most of whom were new to me, I went along and it was a great night. So great in fact that I have been many times since. Lisa is such a striking individual that is is no surprise she was CEO of her own multi-million pound company. Prolific in her work, she's run comedy nights for Dulwich Hamlets, and Vauxhall Comedy Club, as well as joint-founded Indie club night Indie Amnesty, and What's The Deal Comedy, and still made time to write for publication. I first saw Philipp in September 2022 on a mixed bill in West London, although I'd been aware of the name for a few years. In his short time on stage he struck me as an energetic performer with a zeal for his craft. I recently saw his 2023 hour "Daddy's Home" at a work in progress performance for his Edinburgh Festival Fringe run and was not disappointed by the breadth both in his material and his performance. Still in his 20s but with a varied cultural and vocational background, he has more than enough to call on for material, and traverses the comedy spectrum from socio-political satire to physical buffoonery, with laughs at every turn. 27 Feb 2023 | 30. Tony Law | 00:52:24
In this episode I spoke with stand-up comedian Tony Law, who talked about the NFL, the AI and comedy being cyclical. I think I've seen Tony Law perform maybe thirteen times. From the first time I saw a full show - "Absurdity for the Common People" - in 2017, to just recently when I saw "A Now Begin in Again" for the fourth time at this year's Leicester Comedy Festival. Tony Law is not only a wonderful person to talk to, but also a comedic force of nature. He is unlike anyone I've ever seen perform comedy. On stage he is a whirlwind, with absurdist tangents being thrown out in every direction. As someone who sees a lot of comedy, the opportunity for me to see a performer who is devoid of a punchline is a rare treat, as I don't predict what will happen, but just let it happen, and it is never what I expected. That, for me, is one of the hallmarks of great comedy. Instagram @MrTonyLaw Twitter @MrTonyLaw The Comedy Nerd Instagram @The ComedyNerd Comedy in a Nutshell Instagram @ComedyInANutshell

In this episode I spoke with rising stand-up comedian Alice-India, who talked about her approach to comedy, her stage persona, and also about her experiences with shady characters on the comedy circuit. I first became aware of Alice-India when she was a finalist at the 2021 2Northdown New Comedian of the Year, but it was at her 45 minute work in progress "Be Brave (or Whatever)" at the Caroline of Brunswick for the 2022 Brighton Fringe that I saw first hand her comedy prowess. In this show she was looking for new friends and was obvious that she'd found some in her audience, a fact I communicated to her after the show. Update: After this episode came out, I revisited the show "Be Brave (or Whatever)" at an intimate venue of the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe and was impressed with Alice's tenacity and resilience in the face of a tight-knit rambunctious crowd. I enjoyed her comedy for a second time and predict we will hear much more from Alice-India in the near future.
