Sarah has a delightful conversation with her longtime friend and comedy inspiration, Dr Ted Morris, Canada’s funniest gay veterinarian. Ted is a small animal veterinarian from Toronto who has been wildly successful as a Canadian stand up comedian. He has performed at JFL, the Halifax Comedy Festival, and the Winnipeg Comedy Festival and is all over CBC radio and television. He just released his brilliant comedy album, Dawn of the Ted. Where will Ted go next? Only time will tell, but one thing we know is it’s not America’s Got Talent.

Sarah meets and interviews Dr Vien Phommachanh (The Comic Doc), who is the #1 Ranked, Laotian, Ear, Nose, & Throat Doctor/Comedian in Southwest, Florida (probably). Vien has performed standup all over the United States and overseas in clubs, theatres, and comedy festivals. They talk about the second-generation immigrant experience, snot, and how Tiger Balm probably cures everything. Vien also talks about how a career in medicine can take over your whole life, and how comedy can be the cure for this! Sarah wonders if she and Vien might be twins separated at birth because their experiences are so similar!

S1 Ep 3 Yes Anding the Absurdity that is Healthcare
00:47:59
In this episode, Sarah has a spontaneous, totally improvised, not at all planned conversation with pharmacist and improv comedian, Cory Jenks. Dr Jenks earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of South Carolina in 2011. He is an ambulatory care clinical pharmacy specialist, where he tries to talk people into healthy lifestyle choices instead of taking medications, which seems antithetical, but it all makes sense. Cory just celebrated his tenth improvaversary! YES, he coaches, teaches and performs improv, AND he also uses the principles of improv to teach healthcare professionals how to apply the valuable skills of improv to create a more adaptable, empathetic and humanizing healthcare experience. YES, AND also, he wrote a book about this very subject called Permission to Care. He is also a husband and dad of three kids under five and ten chickens. This episode was so much fun and Sarah’s only regret is that we didn’t talk about the chickens. Maybe next time, Cory?

Sarah gets a chance to catch up with Dr Caroline Brookfield, who is a veterinarian, author, entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and stand-up comedian. (Also a friend. She is my friend.) She is on a mission to help unapologetic “left brainers” to amplify originality with a creative mindset. A creative mindset will help you to uncover novel solutions to chronic problems, refresh your well-being, and renew your zeal at work. Who doesn’t want more zeal at work? She is just what the doctor ordered to help the nerds tap into their creative brains and rekindle their creative spark! She is the author of the book “The Reluctant Creative”.

S1 Ep5 Peruvian Doctors in COVID Wards Getting Coffee
00:42:53
Our guest on this episode has packed a lot of living into life so far and she is just getting started! Dr Natalie Tinney is a Peruvian Canadian/Canadian Peruvian who was born in the USA, but grew up in Canada and Peru and then went to medical school in Peru. After graduation, all hell broke loose (aka COVID) and she found herself working in a COVID ward in a remote Peruvian city in the Amazon during peak COVID. She is now a third-year internal medicine resident in Lima, Peru, but she is doing rotations in Canada and she may end up practicing internal medicine up here. Time will tell. Natalie started doing open mics at 16, which is around the same time she decided to be a doctor. She loves stand up comedy, spoken word and writing. Medicine is her first love, but comedy is a great outlet for all of the crazy sh*t that happens to her. I hope you enjoy meeting Natalie as much as I did!

I know, I know, it’s hard to believe, but in this episode, Sarah chats with Dr Will Flanary. You know, that guy, Glaucomflecken!! When Will/Glaucomflecken agreed to be a guest on Comedicine, Sarah squealed like a little girl on Christmas morning. (For reals though!) Will is a (human) ophthalmologist and (human) comedian who has become a (human) social media sensation with his videos that satirize, lampoon, ridicule and parody the interactions between physicians from different specialties and the health care system in general. Will also uses comedy to expose the ridiculousness of US Health Insurance Companies, speaking truth to power, which is what great satire is all about. Will is a husband, (human) father, (dog) Dad, two-time cancer survivor, one-time cardiac arrest survivor (thanks to the superhero he lives with, aka his wife, aka Lady Glaucomflecken aka Kristin Flanary), podcaster, keynote speaker, comedian, and, honestly, just the nicest guy ever. Just like you thought.

Our guest this week needs no introduction because it’s me. It’s Sarah. I’m the guest. In our last episode of season one, Dr Vien Phommachanh (The Comic Doc) our friend and guest from episode 2, returns to host with Dr Sarah Boston as his guest. Why did we do this? Well mostly because last time Sarah and Vien talked, Vien had a lot of questions that Sarah refused to answer (because rules) and Vien said he’d love to come back as host. So that’s what we did. Also, you can get to know Sarah a bit better this way. Who is this person?
Dr Sarah Boston is a veterinary surgical oncologist and thyroid cancer survivor. (Ironic, right?) Her bestselling memoir, Lucky Dog: How Being a Veterinarian Saved my Life, was published by The House of Anansi in 2014. Lucky Dog will make you laugh and ugly cry, sometimes at the same time, most of the time out loud. Sarah’s book got her on a path of comedy writing and then she decided to go to comedy school because she is a nerd. Sarah graduated from Humber College in the Comedy Performance and Writing Program in spring 2023. She is a regular at YukYuks in Toronto on Rising Stars, and has performed at the Hillside Folk Festival and Guelph Comedy Festival. She still works as a veterinary surgical oncologist and she is trying to find ways to make veterinarians to laugh more. (We need it!)

S2 E1 How do you solve a problem like Kelli Dunham?
00:51:44
In this episode, Sarah talks to Kelli Dunham, who is a nurse, comedian, author, LGBTQ+ leader, educator, performer, author, caregiver, and storyteller, and maybe I’m missing something because she is so many things! However, despite outward appearances, she is not a gym teacher or a 12-year-old boy. Kelli was also an aspiring nun at one point, but her “insufficient docility” made this career choice a bad fit. I guess they call it a convent for a reason. (It’s conventional.) She started telling jokes to her dairy cows as a kid in Wisconsin and found that they were sometimes better audience members than the comedy bros she encountered at open mics when she first started doing comedy. Kelli found other places to explore stand-up and storytelling, like conferences for health care professionals, Pride events, workplaces, The Moth, and the Edinburgh Fringe. Through being a natural caregiver and her own life experiences, Kelli takes her comedy where no one else dares to go. Her most recent one-person show is Second Helping: Two Dead Girlfriends, Dead Funny. And yes, it is about her two partners who died, but it’s really about how to ask for help. Kelli believes that “laughing is a revolutionary gesture” which is the coolest quote ever. How do you solve a problem like Kelli Dunham? How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

Our guest on this episode is the inimitable, incomparable, incredible Dr. Janet McMordie. She is a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician who also does surgical assist and mass gathering medicine. During the pandemic, she made a hard pivot to improv comedy. For her second act, she is an improv performer, actor in film and TV, voiceover artist, stunt performer and podcaster. She is also a medical consultant for film and TV where she tries really hard to make art medically accurate, but that’s hard because sometimes medically accurate doesn’t look good on TV. She is going to tell us about how she does all of this. It’s an amazing and fun and cool chat!!

S2 E5 Ding Dong Gong - Veterinary Medicine Life Balance
00:44:26
On this episode of Comedicine, we are hopping across the pond to speak with Liz Easter. Liz is a seasoned veterinarian and relatively new stand-up comedian. She has been a primary care veterinarian in the UK for 19 years, and she recently has made a shift into mobile veterinary palliative and end-of-life care. Liz keeps her comedy life and her veterinary life separate, which is just a personal choice and totally not because she is a spy. She tells us about her first comedy set when she lost her voice right before the showcase. Most people would have bailed, but she wrote a whole new set and performed it using text-to-voice like a champ. Liz tells us about the London stand-up scene and what it’s like to perform in a gong show that uses dildoes as gongs. Yes, that’s what I said.
Liz Easter is a Veterinarian working in mobile end-of-life care in London, England, having spent 19 years in general practice. She has been performing stand-up comedy since 2022, and is an observational and storytelling comic. She performed at the 2022 Brighton Fringe, and more recently, completely died on her ass at the Big Belly Ding Dong Gong show in London. At home, Liz has two children, a cat and a long-suffering husband, who feature in much of her stand-up material.

S2 Ep6 An Improvised Life With Dr Matthew Asciutto
00:58:04
Dr Matt Asciutto is a veterinarian, podcaster, musician, improvisor, educator, Dad and visionary that we had the pleasure of talking to on this episode. He has maintained a fine balance of science, medicine, music and comedy throughout his life and he has carved his own path. Matt didn’t get the memo that veterinary medicine is hard to get into and hard in general, and he has a refreshing attitude towards the profesh. Prior to veterinary school, Matt was a professional improv performer for seven years and he completed a Masters in Chemistry. Who exactly is this guy? Take a listen to find out. You won’t regret it!!
Matt Asciutto has made the annoying decision to live a life that defies the traditional. It is impossible to devise a traditional thesis sentence for a traveling relief emergency vet who still thinks of himself as a performer and teacher.2017 graduate of The University of Tennessee's College of Veterinary Medicine, defies norms by working as a full-time emergency relief veterinarian, covering over 35 hospitals across 6 states.
In his free time, Matt can be found writing silly songs for friends, editing his upcoming book about life as a relief veterinarian, or painstakingly editing episodes of his podcast: The Greatest Profession.

On today’s episode we talk to our first paramedic! Brad Pittman has been a paramedic and stand up comedian for 34 years. He works the nightshift as a paramedic outside of Atlanta. Guys, Brad has seen some sh*t. Maybe you think your job is stressful, but do you wear a bullet proof vest to work? Do you? Well Brad does. Brad also had a stroke 8 years ago while at work. This is terrible, but if you are going to have a stroke, having one in an ambulance with another paramedic is a close second to having one in the hospital. Brad’s stroke left him with an intermittent stutter which he has had to work through on stage. Brad is also a Youtuber with some super fun characters that he has cooked up, and a podcaster. His podcast is called Smoked Meat, named after his love of meat! And his meat-related hobbies that helped him get through some tough times. Getting to know Brad was super fun! I’m glad he is out there! Thanks Brad.

Dr Greg Bishop is a veterinarian and cartoonist. He graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine at the peak of the median curve in 2013, but Greg is anything but average. Greg endured a small animal rotating internship in the New York area, complete with old-school verbally abusive surgeon, and soul-crushing hours and workload. This horrific experience made Greg decide to be a person after his internship. He is a husband, dad and dog dad in Portland, Oregon. Greg now works as a relief veterinarian in primary care and emergency practice. He is also a teacher at a technical college and a creative. Greg has illustrated eight children's books (working on the ninth) and is currently writing a graphic novel about veterinary medicine. He has a monthly cartoon featured in Veterinary Practice News, and recently started submitting cartoons to the New Yorker. We talk about veterinary medicine, jokes, cartoons, rejection, mentorship and whether it is better to be a crayon or a pencil.

A comedian walks into a medical school for a rectal exam….This is not a set up for a joke, this is Devon Flynn’s day job. In his day job, he helps medical students practice their communication skills and clinical acuity, acting as a standardized patient. It’s Opposite Day With Rob Lewin!!! This episode is very exciting because it is opposite day with Rob Lewin! Rob is an improviser and sketch comedian living in Guelph, Ontario. His live comedy credits include The Second CityToronto FamCo,The Making-Box Brigade, The Bad Dog Featured Players and festivals such as Toronto Sketchfest, Detroit Improv Festival, Del Close Marathon NYC, and Montreal Improv Festival. He teaches improv and sketch classes with Pinch and you see his sketch duo Corpse perform around Guelph and Kitchener-Waterloo. Unlike every other (wonderful) Comedicine guest, who is a health care professional first and then transitions into comedy, Rob has been improvising since before his brain was fully formed. (Grade 9!) Rob is currently in his second year of the Practical Nursing program at Conestoga College. Yes, he is going to keep on doing improv, sketch and teaching improv AND doing nursing, but not at the same time. Would it be cool to teach nurses about improv with his background? Maybe it would, but that’s not what Rob is doing here people! Have a listen, Rob is a wonderful improviser, comedian and human and he whoever ends up with him as their nurse and/or in his audience and/orin his improv class is very lucky!!!

Don’t Get Mad, Get Curious and Creative!
Lacey Pitcher
On this episode of Comedicine, we get to know Lacey Pitcher, Registered Veterinary Nurse and she is a DELIGHT!!!! Lacey shares her insights as a veterinary nurse and the editor of the VN Times. Everything she does is infused with creativity and curiosity and sprinkled with joy! Lacey has found her voice as an author and, although she tends to be most inspired by anger, she loves to give her thoughts on the topics of the day in veterinary medicine. If you tell Lacey no, that probably means she is going to do it anyway, and you should probably just let her TBH. Lacey keeps her comedy life private and tends to write about her disastrous dates and do stand up comedy under an alias in a very strong effort to keep her professional life and her comedy life separate. So we aren’t going to tell you how to find that because it’s secret

S4 - E7 - Cracking Jokes and Cracking Backs - Michael Friedman

Cracking Jokes and Cracking Backs
On this episode, we talk to our first chiropractor! Dr Michael Friedman joins us from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, which is also where Sarah lives now so we are neighbours! Cool. Michael tells us about the pros and cons of practicing as a chiropractor and his stand up comedy, which has been something that he always wanted to do. He finally took the plunge in 2013 and he hasn’t looked back. Micheal is a regular around the Ottawa comedy scene and he has also travelled around Canada with his comedy. We get into the very controversial topic of dishwasher loading and Sarah flexes her nerd muscles hard and out-nerds Michael with her utensile loading system! Michael also tells us about a patient who did not think a chiropractor should be a stand up comedian because it is not professional and this led Sarah to think that this woman might be dead inside. You be the judge, on this episode of Comedicine!

Kim’s skills go beyond comedy as she helmed San Antonio’s number 2 drive time morning radio show. The day after being told she was one of the fastest rising women on the radio, she was fired. The fall from radio fame and a paycheck had her seeking miracles for money for small things like food, mortgage payments and those teenage girls she was raising as a single mom. It was during this time so many miracles did come her way, and she began to document and eventually write about her journey, which has now branched out to public speaking and writing.
Kim stays busy sharing her life and journey. She dares you to define the funny in life. “My wish is we can all find our sparkle.”
