28 Sep 2023DR. RACHEL RUBIN, MD: Menopause + Your Sex Life - Female Hormones, Pelvic Floor Rehab + Viagra for Women01:03:18

EPISODE 3:

DR. RACHEL RUBIN, MD: Menopause + Your Sex Life! with our Nation's Chief Cliterologist! Female Hormones, Pelvic Floor Rehab + Viagra for Women

This week, my guest is none other than Dr. Rachel Rubin, MD is a board-certified urologist and sexual medicine specialist.

As a leading expert in Urology and Sexual Medicine, Dr. Rubin is also known as one of only a handful of physicians with fellowship training in sexual medicine for all genders.

Based in Washington DC, she is a clinician, researcher, passionate educator, activist, and an incredible resource.

In this episode, we talk about menopause, perimenopause, and how we know when we are in them! We talk about the symptoms of Genito-Unrinary Syndrome of Menopause and what we can do about them. The good news is there are things we can do, actions we can take, and people out there that can help.

She explains pelvic floor rehab, and the benefits of vaginal estrogen, and shares that women can take Viagra too!

Dr. Rubin tells us how understanding our own healthcare is the best advocacy and the best thing we can do for our health.

However, as Dr. Rubin notes, there is a lack of information out there on women’s health, and our doctors, as well-trained as they may be, may not have training when it comes to managing or even recognizing menopause and perimenopause. Even Oprah’s doctors overlooked her menopause symptoms! She even shares that doctors were told to avoid the clitoris so as not to make the patient uncomfortable.

Women’s health is decades behind men’s health, as women were not included in medical research formally until 1986, but thanks to doctors like Dr. Rubin, that is changing, and we can be part of that shift toward greater knowledge about women’s health too. !

We also talk about finding a provider and how you can be a part of her group menopause meetings held online.

This is a special episode and our first-ever live product demo!! No matter your age, gender, or medical history, the CO2LIFT can help bring back sensation. We delve into how these products help Lichen Sclerosus, vaginal dryness, vaginal atrophy, painful sex, and more. You will hear the testimonial reports of cancer survivors and skeptical doctors who were blown away by the results. This treatment is changing women’s lives!

31 Jan 2024DR. AMIR MARASHI, MD, OBGYN: The Physician who Demands Gender Equality00:48:50

Known as the Vagina Whisperer, Dr. Amir Marashi was raised in a hospital, started medical school as a teenager, and after performing countless hymenoplasties that made him aware of the gender biases that exist globally, he embarked on a mission to help women around the world by addressing the stigma around women's sexuality.

Establishing a practice in Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Marashi dedicated his practice to women including treating victims of genital mutilation and aligning himself with organizations like The Orchid Project to educate families about the procedure and prevent its occurrence.

As a cosmetic gynecologist, Dr. Marashi recognized the lack of study on the biomechanics of intercourse which led to his innovation of the Clitogram to measure stimulation in women. He is the founder of Cere, a sexual wellness company offering research-backed and award-winning sexual wellness tools that are literally pleasure prescribed. In collaboration with his colleague Dr. Lovey, they delved into understanding what truly brings women pleasure.

Challenging the taboo around discussing pelvic pain, Dr. Marashi recommends masturbation as a means of thriving and pioneered the world’s first clitoris-shaped vibrator, breaking away from the traditional phallic design, with added features for stimulating the entire clitoris.

Emphasizing women's right to pleasure, Marashi organized the first designer vagina fashion show in New York City which garnered much attention and awareness around female sexuality and the unspoken nature of the topic. He recently collaborated with over 50 feminist writers and artists, to co-author "A Woman’s Right To Pleasure," a visually stunning and thoughtfully written coffee table book that aims to break the stigma around female sexuality.

As a physician committed to helping women improve the quality of thier lives, Dr. Marashi is "all about the angle" and explains that his surgeries are aimed at correcting the angle of the vagina for the patient's pleasure, functionality, and well-being. His revolutionary Vagilangelo procedure, involving three stitches and painless injections enhances the G-Zone and corrects the angle due to aging and childbirth easily and painlessly.

Enjoy this show with Dr. Amir Marashi, physician, author, innovator, and activist for women.

07 Mar 2024DR. KATE BALESTRIERI, PHD: Embodied + Empowered! How to Prioritize Pleasure and Mental Health01:07:31

We cover a lot of ground in this episode with Dr. Kate Balestrieri PHD, an in-demand psychologist and sex therapist driven by helping people create and define their sexuality.

The founder of the Modern Intimacy, and host of Get Naked with Dr. Kate, Dr. Kate Balestrieri built a platform that connects clinicians trained in sex therapy with people seeking therapy for sexual issues and provides a safe space for people to get access to education about sensitive topics.

In just over an hour, we tap into many facets of female sexuality and mental health and cover topics including what it means to validate our mental health,  prioritize pleasure, and center ourselves.

We also dive into Barbie, Kink, and The Patriarchy!

Dr. Kate explains how female sexuality is legislated and lays out the path to a better future in becoming more embodied and empowered in our own skin.

She and I discuss the difference between a sex therapist and a sexologist, the delineation between anger and rage, and how a munch is different from a brunch!

We also talk about the need for rituals and symbols that remind us of how extraordinary we are to be alive in a female body.

She assures us that our thoughts are “not weird” and that everyone worries about being “not normal” and as long as there is consent, sexuality is just part of being human…and she even makes the case for why women should care about porn.

One of the most thoughtful and articulate speakers on this topic, Dr. Balestrieri enlightens us on how women are expected to do an enormous amount of emotional labor that goes totally unseen and tells us how we can do less of it to maintain our mental health.

I love this episode and am grateful to Dr. Kate for her extraordinary work!

SHOW NOTES

This episode delves into the often misunderstood condition of endometriosis. Chelsea Leyland, founder of Looni, joins us to shed light on this topic and empower others with knowledge and support.

Topics we cover include understanding endometriosis, holistic approaches to treatment, challenging shame and stigma surrounding women’s genitalia and periods, and empowerment and advocating for yourself in the room with doctors and healthcare professionals.

Endometriosis is a condition where scar tissue from the uterine lining grows outside the uterus. Shockingly, 1 in 10 people who menstruate have this condition, yet it often takes over 10 years to receive a diagnosis. Many patients feel unheard and unseen by their physicians, leading to frustration and loss of faith in the medical system. Nutrition, stress levels, and lifestyle factors play crucial roles in managing endometriosis symptoms. Society's narrative of shame surrounding menstruation exacerbates the challenges faced by those with endometriosis.  It's crucial to challenge outdated solutions and reclaim ownership of our bodies and experiences. By speaking openly about our experiences, we can dismantle the shame and stigma surrounding menstruation and reproductive health.

Rather than relying solely on pharmaceuticals, Chelsea took a holistic approach to her treatment of epileptic seizures, which was essential for her recovery. We discuss how this holistic approach is what her brand, Looni, is built on. Looni blends science and spirit to bring balance to our hormones because newsflash, everyone has hormones!

Our periods should not be painful, and seeking help for symptoms is not a sign of weakness. Let’s continue to educate ourselves, advocate for better care, and support each other on our journeys toward menstrual health and empowerment.

You can become your own best advocate.

All In Her Head: The Truth and Lies Early Medicine Taught Us About Women’s Bodies and Why It Matters Today is Dr. Comen's seminal work, challenging the status quo, dismantling stereotypes, and debunking myths surrounding women's health. Through her book and advocacy, she strives to close the gender gap in healthcare, shedding light on how diseases affect women and how our needs have been dismissed or have gone unaddressed for far too long.

In her practice, Dr. Comen fosters a sacred relationship with her patients, understanding deeply what it means to experience illness. In this chat, she acknowledges the societal, cultural, and political influences on medicine, emphasizing the need for a new language around women's health.

Dr. Comen passionately advocates for women to stop apologizing for their medical needs and to ask questions that lead to better knowledge, better health, and better lives. She calls for a shift towards an empowered narrative, urging women to take up space and actualize their best selves.

We learn through this conversion that investing in women helps the economy. Thus we should be advocating for increased investment in research and healthcare infrastructure tailored to the unique needs of women.

Let’s agree to take up space, bring your advocate with you to the doctor, and make a pact to stop apologizing.

He makes an appearance alongside @drdubrow + @drpaulnassif on @botchedtv in a complex case this season. As a fellowship-trained hand and microvascular surgeon who specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Chao is something of a polymath, to say the least, with specialties in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, women’s sexual health surgery + the development of new technologies in the field of plastic surgery.

Dr. Chao wants women to know that we are not alone and we have options when it comes to breast reconstruction after breast cancer.

Here is what we talk about on this show:

The pros and cons of Autologous vs. Prosthetic surgery: AKA using your own tissue vs. getting breast implants. We discuss the microsurgical techniques that are involved in autologous reconstruction, and how important it is to pick the right surgeon with any option you choose.

We talk about the TRAM flap surgery vs. the newer DIEP flap surgery, how these procedures are done, where the tissue is taken from, and who is a candidate for them. We also talk about going flat which is choosing not to reconstruct a breast at all.

We get into whether to reconstruct both breasts if only one is affected, tissue expanders, a 1 part surgery vs a 2 part surgery.

We discuss the more common prosthetic route, which is using implants to reconstruct the breast, the pros and cons, the types of implants, and cutting-edge digital surgery available to assist in making the choice that is best for you.

We talk about the importance of choosing a team you have confidence in including the surgeon who removes breast cancer, the medical oncologist, and the surgeon who reconstructs the breast(s).

We talk about resources for looking into board certification and how necessary it is to like your surgeon. When facing cancer, women are thinking more about surviving the disease instead of how their breasts going to look after the fact. However, this is important to our sexual health and overall quality of life.

One out of every 8 American women will get the diagnosis, but there is over 95% chance that you will survive it if it's caught early, so get your mammogram!

13 Mar 2024POLLY RODRIGUEZ, CEO, UNBOUND: The Cutest Sexual Wellness Tools and An Unbelievable Story!00:55:54

Welcome to our Holiday Shopping Episode! T’is the Season for Women’s Sexual Wellness!

Polly Rodriguez is the CEO and Co-Founder of Unbound, a sexual wellness company that she founded after receiving a cancer diagnosis at 21 that resulted in early onset menopause.

Polly found herself shopping for a vibrator per her doctor's suggestion- only to find that the ‘best’ option was a seedy store next to the airport in St. Louis. Ten years later, Polly and co-founder Sarah Jayne Kinney started Unbound with the goal of taking sexual wellness mainstream through elevated design, body-safe materials, and accessible pricing. Today, the company has been hailed by the New York Times as the "ideological center of the tech-savvy, female-led women's sexuality movement" with over 50 products created by a team of all women in New York City.

Polly believes women deserve pleasure and an unapologetic community of babes to revel in it with.

Polly learned that life is too short to be squeamish about biology. She is an advocate for female pleasure, a creative powerhouse, and a brilliant businesswoman.

The Episode

In this episode, we talk about why sexual wellness is important and what that means for women.

We talk about early onset menopause and Polly’s journey to the sexual wellness space.

We talk about pleasure activism, pleasure products, and most importantly, destigmatizing women's pleasure.

Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

12 Oct 2023MOLLY MACDONALD, CEO, THE PINK FUND: Breast Cancer Badass! She Didn't Ask Herself "Why Me?" She Asked Herself "What Can I Do?"00:53:37

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and my guest is the Co-Founder and CEO of The Pink Fund!

Molly MacDonald is heroic. She was diagnosed with breast cancer on the brink of a divorce with 5 kids under the age of 13.  She experienced the financial hardship that can often come hand-in-hand with the disease and found herself in line at the food bank and about to lose her home. She didn’t crumble, and she didn’t even ask herself “Why Me?” She saw a serious problem and asked herself “What can I do?”

A year later, The Pink Fund was born.

1 out of every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and most will face the financial hardship that cancer causes which is how to pay for your home, car, insurance, food, and electricity while undergoing treatment which often has women forced to lose their jobs and income. Molly learned that many of these women were opting to keep their jobs so they could keep the lights on and the kids fed instead of getting treatment.

Now The Pink Fund helps women who qualify pay their essential bills for 90 to 180 days.

She started The Pink Fund with her husband whom she calls Tom Terrific! He saw her vision and now The Pink Fund has paid 7.4 million dollars to women in need.

Molly’s personal stories are not just heroic and harrowing though, she is also hilarious and tells us about forgetting her prosthetic breast on a business trip taking advice from a stranger on a plane and how she and her friends made a cast of her bust out of dental stone that she cured on a home foot spa.

She named it my “My Winged Victory” and I have encouraged her to put it on permanent display!

She also tells us how we can help women with breast cancer and how you can help yourself if you are facing breast cancer right now.

In the episode we talk about financial toxicity, what it is, and how to avoid it.

We discuss breast reconstruction, Molly’s article DIEPly Distrubred about the DIEP flap reconstruction procedure not being covered by insurance, and how most women don’t know that they have options when it comes to reconstruction.

She gives us practical advice on how to advocate for yourself if you have breast cancer and how you can help those you love by advocating for them.

She shares actionable wisdom that you don’t want to miss.

27 Jun 2024PRIYANKA JAIN, FOUNDER, EVVY : The Vaginal Microbiome00:58:21

The vaginal microbiome plays a crucial role in women's health, influencing fertility, pregnancy, and the progression of cervical cancer. It is a complex community of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and microbes residing in the vagina. A healthy vaginal microbiome is dominated by beneficial bacteria like lactobacilli, which produce lactic acid and hydrogen peroxide, creating a protective barrier that prevents pathogens from thriving and safeguarding the reproductive organs.

Disruption in the balance of the vaginal microbiome can lead to conditions such as bacterial vaginosis (BV) and other forms of dysbiosis. BV, the most common vaginal infection, affects 30% of women at any given time. Imbalances in the vaginal microbiome can have far-reaching consequences, impacting fertility, in vitro fertilization (IVF) success rates, preterm birth rates, cervical cancer progression rates, and susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Understanding the composition and health of the vaginal microbiome is essential for women's overall well-being. Advanced genomic sequencing, like the technology used by Evie, can provide insights into the specific bacteria, fungi, and microbes present in the vaginal environment. This information empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health and potentially prevent future complications related to the vaginal microbiome.

By monitoring and understanding their vaginal microbiome, individuals can take control of their vaginal health, similar to how they manage other aspects of their well-being like sleep and nutrition. Recognizing the importance of the vaginal microbiome and its impact on various health outcomes allows individuals to proactively manage their vaginal health and reduce the risk of complications related to fertility, pregnancy, and cervical cancer progression.

Evvy, as discussed in the podcast episode, offers personalized at-home vaginal health testing and treatment options. The process involves a simple at-home vaginal health test where a Q-tip swab of the vagina is collected and sent back to Evvy's lab for whole genome metagenomic sequencing. This advanced sequencing technology allows Evvy to analyze the entire genome of the vaginal microbiome, identifying specific pathogens, antibiotic resistance genes, and biofilms.

Evvy's testing screens for over 700 microbes in the urogenital tract, providing detailed insights into the composition of the vaginal microbiome and any potential imbalances. It can also identify antibiotic resistance genes to ensure effective treatment and address biofilms that protect pathogenic microbes, enhancing treatment outcomes and promoting overall vaginal health.

Evvy's mission is to close the gender gap in healthcare by focusing on the vaginal microbiome. By partnering with healthcare providers and advocating for insurance coverage, Evvy aims to provide valuable insights and personalized care for individuals with vaginal health concerns. Their efforts to gather comprehensive data, demonstrate the effectiveness of their approach, and work towards broader recognition align with their goal of addressing the unique healthcare needs of individuals with vaginas.
