30 Jun 2024Interview: 'This is one of the most important books I've seen for some time': Simon Kerr praises 'Living Hot'00:37:25

Simon Kerr (pictured) is the musical driving force of "Music for a Warming World" and has had a long history in the challenges of climate change.

The Melbourne-based musician/academic was reading the most recent book, "Living Hot: Surviving and Thriving on a Heating Planet", co-authored by Australian public intellectual Clive Hamilton and energy consultant, George Wilkenfeld.

Simon was so impressed with what Halimton and Wilkenfeld had written that he contacted "Climate Conversations" saying: "We have to talk".

Both Simon and his partner, Christine, use electric bikes to travel about the City of Melbourne.

He was particularly excited to hear the "Climate Conversations" episode in which the CEO of the Melbourne-based Bicycle Network, Alison McCormack was interviewed: "Interview: 'Australia's E-Bike moment' with Bicycle Network's CEO, Alison McCormack".

Hamilton has been the Professor of Public Ethics at Charles Sturt University in Canberra since 2008.

06 Dec 2024Event: Nuclear power protestors declare it is 'Too expensive, too, dangerous, too slow'00:29:15

The Melbourne office of Friends of the Earth organized a Collins St protest outside a building that was the venue for a Federal Government inquiry into the Liberal National Party's idea that Australia should build and commission seven nuclear power stations throughout the nation.

More than 30 people joined the noisy but peaceful demonstration. While passers-by were left with no doubt the nuclear power stations were too expensive, too dangerous and too slow, those attending had the chance to listen to several exciting, articulate and far-seeing speakers, including two people from the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize-winning International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), Associate Professor Tilman Ruff (pictured) and Dave Sweeney who is also with the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF).

Representatives of the Melbourne-based "Lighter Footprints" and the "Kooyong Climate Change Alliance" and a passionate Danae Bosley from the Victorian Trades Hall Council also spoke.

Anjali Sharma (pictured) played a lead role in arguing that the Federal Government owed all young Australians a duty to take reasonable care to protect them from climate change harm - they case initially fell in their favour, but then was lost on appeal.

Anjali and her contemporaries not disheartened by that "defeat", continued with preparation of their argument and now with the support of Australian Capital Territory Senator, David Pocock, a private members Bill calling for a duty of care is now before the Senate.

His opinion changed dramatically when he realised the machines his company produced today, would still be in the air in 2050 and the his children or grandchildren would not be wanting to fly on something that was wrecking the planet.

08 Jun 2022Interview: Graeme Hanigan calls me out on the incorrect use of climate skeptic00:18:04
Graeme Hanign (pictured) has an acute understanding of how and where the word "skeptic" should be employed and has "called out" Climate Conversations for the term's incorrect use. Graeme, who retired from a career in IT and retail to live in northern Victoria's Rushworth, and who is an active member of the Shepparton-based Goulburn Valey University of The Third Age, now spends considerable time and effort ensuring the preservation of what was Australia's first-ever solar project in the "Corner Country" on the far western edge of New South Wales. It was during the interview that Graeme mentioned his intent to read the most recent book, "Becoming a Critical Thinker", from a former Murchison woman, Sarah BIrrell Ivory, who lectures/teaches at the University of Edinburgh Business School. Sarah Birrell Ivory was a guest on Climate Conversations in March 2022. Enjoy "Music for a Warming World". Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/climateconversations

Assistant Professor David Keith (pictured at the Melbourne Energy Institute's Symposium23 on Friday, December 8, mounted a convincing argument about why public transport will never replace, totally, the privately owned motor car.

His argument overlooked, I would argue, the fact that the modern mind had been colonized by the individualism promoted and encouraged by capitalistic and neoliberal thinking.

08 Aug 2024Webinar: 'It's real, it's here, it's now, it's happening, it's not a future event and it's consequential' - Minister Stephen Jones on climate change01:27:33

The realities of climate change were spelt out with distinct clarity at the Tuesday, August 6, forum, both in person and online, organised by the Australian National University through its Institute for Climate, Energy and Disaster Solutions.

The keynote speaker was the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services, Stephen Jones.

Mr Jones said his government, the Australian Labor Government, is not "putting its head in the proverbial bucket of sand" regarding climate change.

He said; "It's real, it's here, it's now, it's happening, it's not a future event and it's consequential".

03 May 2022Quick Climate Links: Nicholls emerges as the most uninsurable electorate because of climate change00:04:55
Shepparton's new multi-million dollar courthouse (pictured) is, along with the rest of the city, at risk of being uninsurable because of risks posed by climate change -  Shepparton proper is on a flood plain and so threatened with flooding. Yes, Shepparton is a benign place, but it is strikingly flat and while for decades that has been a bonus allowing for extensive irrigation, it is now a burden as widespread flooding under a new climate regime could bring major flooding. You can read about this dilemma in the SBS story - "One in 25 Australian properties will be uninsurable by 2030 due to climate change, report warns"; or in the story by Climate Councillor, NIcki Hutley, in a Melbourne Age story "Climate change is making our homes uninsurable"; or a story from The Guardian - "Flood and cyclone-prone areas in eastern Australia may be ‘uninsurable’ by 2030, report suggests". The report from the Climate Council - "One in 25 Australian homes uninsurable by 2030: Climate Council launches cutting edge digital climate-risk map". 28 Jun 2022Radio 3CR interview: 'All you need is a post hole digger and an Allen key and you can tap into the world's cheapest and cleanest energy' - Smart Energy Council CEO John Grimes on 3CR00:26:29

An exasperated John Grimes (pictured) suggests during an interview with Vivien Langford on Community Radio's 3CR that post hole digger and an Allen key will allow us to access the world's cheapest and cleanest energy.

John, the Climate Energy Council's CEO, was talking with Vivien about the inadequacies of the media when covering the climate crisis and its failure to address the issues of real concern to many Australians.

It was during the interview that Vivien mentioned Saul Griffith and his book, "The BIg Switch".

03 May 2022Interview: 'What happens in 2050 will be dictated by what happens between now and 2030' - Charlie Prell, Farmers for Climate Acton chair00:25:35
Charlie Prell (pictured) chairs Farmers for Climate Action and talks here with Climate Conversations about a recent media release from the group, "Farmers deserve certainty on net-zero target". Charlie's sheep farm at Crookwell, about an hour north of Canberra on the New South Wales southern highlands, hosts a wind farm and being able to see one of the turbines from his kitchen window, Charlie has almost exhausted his adjectives in explaining how wonderful the wind turbines are. He sees wind turbines, and renewable energy generally, as a major step forward in countering the climate crisis and encouraging others to embrace the idea of stepping away from fossil fuels he has said that what happens in 2050 will be dictated by what happens between now and 2030. Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Charlie sees wonderful opportunities unfolding for farmers, and Australians broadly, through the embrace of such things as wind farms and other forms of renewable energy. 26 May 2023Protest: Message from Deputy Executive Director at Friends of the Earth Japan heard at Melbourne event outside Bourke St Japanese Embassy00:04:27

A message from the Deputy Executive Director at Friends of the Earth Japan, Ayumi Fukakusa (pictured) was read out to those at a Bourke St, Melbourne protest staged out the front of the Japanese Embassy.

The Melbourne protest was organised by that city's Friends of the Earth.

Ms Fukakusa's message, delivered at similar protests all around the world said:

"Japan is one of the top financier of fossil fuel projects. Japan uses public money to support destructive projects. Back in April, the G7 Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment was held in Sapporo. The joint communiqué included a commitment to achieving a decarbonized power sector by 2035, as in the previous year. It also noted that accelerating the transition to “clean energy" is the key to energy security, and that the phase-out of unabated fossil fuels must be accelerated. This statement is an indication of the international community’s strong sense of urgency regarding the need to strengthen measures in the face of the accelerating climate crisis. On the other hand, Japan’s backward-looking stance was conspicuous among the G7 members, as it opposed the inclusion of a deadline for phase-out of coal-fired power generation and insisted that gas be maintained as a “bridge fuel” in the shift to clean energy.

"The promotion of an international “Green Transformation" was clearly stated in the Ministers’ Meeting’s Joint Communique. It needs to be emphasised that Japan’s “Green Transformation”  is full of “misguided climate change measures" that have uncertain carbon reduction effects and are not consistent with the 1.5°C target of the Paris Agreement, such as building or extending the operation of nuclear power plants, extending the life of thermal power generation through co-firing of hydrogen, ammonia, and biomass or CCS. Fuel sources and technologies such as hydrogen, ammonia, and CCS, have yet to be proven for practical application and commercialization, and their emission reduction effects and economics are questionable, which will delay real measures from being implemented, and these technologies will not be ready in time for 2035. Although hydrogen and ammonia are mentioned in the joint statement as low-carbon technologies, various conditions are attached to their development and use, including the need to be able to demonstrate emission-reducing effects and consistency with the 1.5°C target.

"It is very important for us that you all from Australia to put pressure on the Japanese government and Japanese corporations that are still running fossil fuel projects in Asia and Australia by holding a protest and showing solidarity during the G7 summit. We need to strengthen our international cooperation to make Japan completely withdraw from all of their fossil fuel projects and financial supports. Not only during the G7 summit, let’s continue to focus on amplifying the voices of people throughout the world, especially from Asia where many Japanese fossil fuel projects are ongoing despite the severe impacts of climate change in the region, against the Japanese government and Japanese corporations."

01 Oct 2024Climate News: Capitalism is at the root of the climate crisis and we urgently need and alternate story00:26:37

Capitalism is consuming the planet and as it endlessly consumes to satiate its ever-growing appetite, it's taking all life, including you and I, to a rather gloomy conclusion.

Writing on "Meditations" - Journal of the Marxist Literary Group - Jodi Dean says:

"Many associate Fredric Jameson’s remark, “It’s easier to imagine an end to the world than an end to capitalism” with Mark Fisher. For good reason: Fisher’s account of capitalist realism confronts us with capitalism’s unbearable yet unavoidable horrors. From the genocidal destruction of settler colonialism, through the demolition of cultures and modes of life that accompanies commodity production and exchange, to planet-altering anthropogenic climate change, capital subsumes the world. We can easily imagine an end to the world because under capitalism most of us confront it every day as we are forced to choose our exploitation, dispossession, and confinement. It’s easier to imagine an end to the world than an end to capitalism because capitalism is the end of the world. We witness and endure it in the ruins of everyday life—lost lives, lives of loss."

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego (pictured) has long worried about climate change and is now delighted that her city now has a department devoted exclusively to helping residents better understand how to live in a warmer climate.

Senior editor with Yahoo News, David Knowles, writing in a story headed "Can Phoenix, the hottest city in America, survive climate change?" said: "In Phoenix, where summer can feel a bit like living through a science  experiment or a dystopian dare, the average summertime temperature has  risen by 3.8 degrees since 1970, according to data compiled by Climate  Central, a nonprofit composed of scientists and journalists. The city  now averages 111 annual days of triple-digit heat, and experiences 12  more days above 110 degrees Fahrenheit each year than it did in 1970."

Those contesting the causes of climate change are often volunteers or poorly paid members of a non-government authority, while those associated with the fossil fuel industry, companies which are the primary drivers of climate change, and highly paid and wallow in the modern world's luxuries.

06 Feb 2024Webinar: Climate update 2024 - Professor Mark Howden assesses where we are with the climate crisis00:42:35

Professor Mark Howden (pictured), the director of the Australian National University's Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions, is optimistic and pessimistic.

Professor Howden saw last year's COP28 process as completely ambiguous. Although the conference produced some heartening eventualities for the world, there was, in his words, "Not a huge amount of good news".

Listen to this episode and you can hear where it is Professor Howden believes the world is headed in 2024.

Professor Howden said many at COP28 referred to this as the "critical decade", but he argued we are in fact in the "critical year".

Trish Randles (pictured with her prized Tesla) is an enthusiast of the Tesla electric car and we met when she had her personal car on display at the recent Bendigo Sustainability Festival. This was the second year Trish and her husband had shown their car at the festival and Trish says the questions and interest had changed dramatically. She said that a year ago the car was simply a novelty, but now, because of the sharp rise in the cost of fossil fuels, many of the questions were of a more practical nature with many people trying to figure out how they could make the switch from their fossil fuel-powered car to an all-electric vehicle.
