During the interview, Chancellor Buckley talks about UTHSC's important role in the community and how The College of Dentistry at UTHSC, in collaboration with the Tennessee Department of Health, is undertaking a $53 million project over the next five years to increase access to dentists and dental care across Tennessee, with a focus on the rural areas with the most need. Funded by the state and called the Healthy Smiles Initiative, the project is a multi-pronged approach to tackling the current shortage of dentists in Tennessee and improving health across the state by making dental care more readily available. Franklin Tomorrow founded more than 20 years ago by business and community leaders. Through our programs and research, we believe the citizens have told us they want Franklin to be a city with a robust economy, vibrant neighborhoods, distinct character, and great people. We have had several significant achievements through the organization and in partnership with other organizations, including the City of Franklin. In 2020, the City of Franklin was named an All-America City by the National Civic League in a joint partnership with Franklin. Only 10 cities achieve this honor annually and this award was given for civic engagement work by the City and Franklin Tomorrow. Franklin Tomorrow engages those who live, work, and play in our community through a series of ongoing programs such as the monthly FrankTalks lecture series and the quarterly Breakfast With the Mayors. FrankTalks is held the second Monday of the month at various locations across the City and BWM is held at Rolling Hills Community Church with Williamson County Mayor Rogers Anderson and Franklin Mayor Ken Moore acting as hosts. The next FrankTalks will be July 11, while the next Breakfast With the Mayors is July 26. At Breakfast With the Mayors we will hear from Williamson County Schools Director Jason Golden and Franklin Special School District Director of Schools David Snowden on the coming school year and the challenges which lie ahead. While our 20th anniversary was in 2020, the pandemic stopped us from celebrating that, but on July 30, we will host our "22 in '22" anniversary celebration at The Factory at Franklin. Mayor Ken Moore's mental health initiative, Find Hope Franklin. We coordinate classes in suicide prevention training known as QPR, which stands for Question Persuade Refer. This vaccine is "thermostable," which means it doesn't have to be stored in a refrigerator, so it could potentially be mailed to homes, increase everyone's access to lifesaving flu vaccines. The vaccine is based on a platform, so it can be used for a wide variety of vaccines (e.g., flu vaccines or Covid vaccines) for both humans and animals (e.g., avian flu vaccines). Park talks with Jessica Biggs, Davidson County Program Coordinator, who shares the story of how Isaiah 117 House began and expanded to Davidson County and highlights the nonprofit organization's mission and efforts to reduce trauma for kids on removal day, lighten the load of the caseworker, and ease the transition for the foster family. When children are removed from their homes out of concern for their safety, they are usually brought to a child welfare services office to await placement. This wait can be a few hours to several days. These children often have nothing with them and are scared, lonely, hungry, and in dirty clothing. Isaiah 117 provides a comforting home where these children instead can be brought to wait – a place that is safe with friendly and loving volunteers who provide clean clothes, smiles, toys, and snuggly blankets. This space allows children to receive the comfort and care they need while child welfare staff can do the necessary paperwork and identify a good placement. Alma McLemore, a native of Franklin, is the President of the board of directors of the African American Heritage Society and serves as Executive Director. Ms. McLemore, or Alma Lee, as she is known to her close friends and classmates is a graduate of Franklin High School’s first integrated class. She has deep roots in the community and a servant’s heart. Alma serves on the City of Franklin’s Planning Commission and Battlefield Preservation Commission. During her tenure at the AAHS, Ms. McLemore has overseen the restoration of The McLemore House while it has been closed for COVID. In 2021, the AAHS was also able to purchase a second property, the Merrill-Williams home located on Natchez Street. The home will eventually be used for educational and interpretive purposes for the Natchez neighborhood and for Black history. McLemore never says “no” when asked to serve! Alma has served on many boards including Habitat for Humanity, WAVES, Franklin Tomorrow, New Hope Academy, Williamson County Chamber of Commerce Affordable Housing Taskforce, Mercy’s Children Clinic, United Community Resource Foundation, Franklin Tomorrow’s Housing Task Force, and United Way of Williamson County Task Force. Alma is a graduate of the City of Franklin Citizens Police Academy and a graduate of the Leadership Franklin Class of 2000. Alma is a member of the City of Franklin Housing Commission, the City of Franklin Civil War Commission, Battle of Franklin Trust, Williamson Co.
