10 Apr 2024 | What’s Worth Saving in Madison? | 00:23:37
Madison’s building boom continues. Construction cranes dot the skyline. Huge new apartment buildings are in progress on many of Madison’s largest thoroughfares: East Washington Ave, West Johnson, Regent Street. But downtown, making way for the new means out with the old, and that means demolition of old buildings. Recent city debates over proposed development in the 100 block of State Street, the 400 block of State Street and the 100 block of Mifflin have pitted desires for housing against desires to preserve pieces of Madison history.
It left us asking: what’s worth saving and how do we decide? Bianca Martin sits down with Madison historian Stu Levitan, longtime former chair of the Madison Landmarks Commission, to examine why we save what we do.

If you’ve driven down East Washington Avenue in the past year, you’ve probably seen the building under construction: a large wall of glass flanks the front of the building, nestled under the swooping curves of arched roofs. This is the new home of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras. Since the 1960s, WYSO has trained and inspired thousands of young musicians across Madison, and they did so from borrowed rooms across town. Now, they’ve got a state-of-the-art rehearsal facility to bring all their orchestras under one roof. Bianca Martin speaks with WYSO Director of Development and Communication Susan Gardels about what’s inside their fancy new digs.

06 Jan 2025 | Who Takes Care of Madison’s Streets in the Winter? | 00:19:53
Winter has arrived and while most of us are sleeping, plow drivers across the city are at work. Like choreographed dancers, they all set about their routes, often working up to 16-hour days in some of the worst conditions, all to clear the way for the rest of us to live our lives.
As the first female snow plow driver for the City of Madison, Margaret Kraege knows that dance well. Margaret worked for the city for more than 40 years and back in 2023, she shared some of her favorite memories of the roads, as well as her tips for sharing the roads with snow plows.

07 Jan 2025 | You’ve Heard of Burning Man, Now Get Ready for Freezing Man | 00:28:46
In 2010, Mike Gomoll lost his four-year-old son Joey to epilepsy. That same year, Mike channeled his grief into action by creating Joey’s Song, a one-night-only benefit concert in Madison to raise money for epilepsy research. Since then the show has continued to grow and this year, Joey’s Song has become Freezing Man, a four-day music festival this week featuring Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, Grammy winners, and music superstars.
Host Bianca Martin caught up with Mike ahead of the festival to get the scoop on this year’s shows, hear stories from backstage, and learn more about how the funds they’ve raised are helping families impacted by epilepsy.

Inauguration Day is coming up fast, and nobody knows just how crazy this election was in Wisconsin like Capital Times photo director Ruthie Hauge and state government reporter Erin McGroarty. Ruthie and Erin documented many rallies, campaign events, and the RNC while both candidates spent colossal amounts of time and money trying to win our votes in Wisconsin. Recently, Ruthie and Erin were invited by the Carl-Schurz-Haus German American Institute in Freiburg, Germany to exhibit their work. They sit down with host Bianca Martin to share how our sister city is reacting to the recent presidential election.

09 Jan 2025 | Dry January Inspiration from Two Madison Bartenders | 00:26:33
When January comes around, many folks opt to lose the booze for the month. In a place with a big drinking culture like Wisconsin, though, that can be tough. But for the bartenders at popular downtown establishments Lucille and Merchant, making non-alcoholic cocktails that are just as buzzworthy as their boozy counterparts is a challenge they embrace with open arms.
On today’s show, host Bianca Martin speaks with Jaiden Desens, a bar manager at Merchant, and Erika Yanke, a lead bartender at Lucille and Merchant, to get their takes on NA trends and get tips on how to keep Dry January interesting.
Join us every Thursday as we explore Madison's food culture, from the brewers and bakers to the chefs and cheesemakers.

11 May 2024 | From City Cast Denver: Introducing ‘Lauren Boebert Can’t Lose’ | 00:02:16
Hey there! We are excited to share the trailer for a new special limited series from our friends and colleagues at City Cast Denver. If you’re a fan of what we do at City Cast, you’ll want to check it out:
You’ve probably heard a story about Congresswoman Lauren Boebert. Like, how she got kicked out of a production of “Beetlejuice” for vaping and groping her date. Or, that time she heckled President Biden during his State of the Union address. Throughout it all, she keeps winning elections and amassing followers, so it’s hard not to watch her meteoric rise and wonder: What does it mean for the future of American Politics?
Host Bree Davies and Executive Producer Paul Karolyi have been covering Boebert’s wildest moments on City Cast Denver for years. And with only a month until her make-or-break primary on June 25, they’re talking to former friends and rivals, supporters and detractors, real people throughout Colorado who have been affected by her work in Congress, and hopefully Lauren herself.
It’s a new limited series from City Cast, because no matter how you feel about her, you have to admit, it feels like Lauren Boebert Can’t Lose.
Subscribe to Lauren Boebert Can’t Lose wherever you get your podcasts. Our first episode drops on May 15.

05 Jun 2023 | Madison’s Independent Police Monitor Does What Exactly? | 00:15:07
It’s been eight years since the death of local teen Tony Robinson sparked a wave of protests in Madison. There have been several high-profile - and fatal - police shootings of unarmed Madison residents since then. Citizens demanded change. Grieving family members brought federal civil rights lawsuits. The city hired a consultant to review the entire police department. A state law was changed to require outside investigations of police shootings.
The latest move? Creating an independent city agency that can investigate complaints against the Madison Police Department.
We speak to the city’s first independent police monitor, Robert Copley.

Happy Flag Day! The North American Vexillological Association studied 312 city flags and ranked Madison’s flag as one of the best in the nation. No wonder our city flag is increasing being flown all over town.
Ted Kaye, the nation’s foremost authority on flag design and author of the NAVA booklet “‘Good’ Flag, ‘Bad’ Flag,” talks with host Bianca Martin about what makes a well-designed flag, why Madison’s flag is so strong but our state flag … not so much.
Check out NAVA’s survey results to see which flags got an A grade, and which ones got an F.
Here’s Roman Mars’ 2015 TED Talk about “why city flags may be the worst-designed thing you've never noticed.”
And these apps will help you navigate the new Madison Metro bus network.

The Madison school district initially offered teachers a 3.5 percent pay bump but is now committed to doubling it to the highest raise allowed by state law. Teachers are applauding the move and say investing in educators is long overdue. However, what this means for the district’s financial health is far from clear because of a looming budget deficit.

26 Jun 2023 | Was Madison Singled Out for Punishment in State Budget? | 00:21:25
Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Homes Jr. famously said, “Taxes are what we pay for civilized society.” But who pays and how much has been debated ever thus.
When you buy anything from a cup of coffee to a car in Madison, you’re paying sales tax. That money is collected by local shops and sent to the state of Wisconsin. Every two years, the state decides how much of that money to share with the communities where it was collected. Same goes for the income tax you pay every year.
But cities say that state money is not keeping up with inflation. Costs are going up, but the money to pay for them isn’t. Madison’s got some unpopular choices: ask voters to pay higher property taxes or cut back city services. And when the state’s sitting on a surplus, it’s a hard pill to swallow.
Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes Conway tells Dylan Brogan what’s ahead.

03 Jul 2023 | Madison’s Electric Fire Truck Was First in the Nation 🚒 | 00:15:45
Electric fire trucks are popping up across the country. Portland, Oregon just got one. Boulder, Colorado is buying one. St. Paul’s got one on order. And of course, Los Angeles got in early. But Madison was first, baby.
Madison was the first city in the nation to put an electric fire truck in service. The truck - which was designed in Wisconsin - saved 60,000 pounds of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere in its first year of operation. And Madison firefighters are helping design the next generation of electric vehicles for the country, as cities look to transition their fleet away from diesel-guzzlers. We catch up with Scott Bavery, Dan Belovarac and Josh Balli from the Madison Fire Department to learn how they did it.

Your City Cast Madison team - Bianca Martin, Dylan Brogan and Molly Stentz - is on the road this week, taking in the Madison area’s most famous attractions. We’re asking the question… as a local, are these stops worth the hype?
It’s Day Two, and we’re headed to The House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Built by architect Alex Jordan to be a weekend retreat, it has since become one of the most hyped local attractions. The house itself still stands, but is surrounded by an entire complex, a museum of sorts, that you can explore on your own with the price of admission. It houses collections of self-playing musical instruments, a three-story whale and perhaps the largest carousel in the country.

17 Jul 2023 | Why Madison is Using Goats to Clean Up Parks 🐐 | 00:20:31
Next time you’re at Olin Turville Park, say hello to new park staffers Donna, Nancy, Emma, Janelle, Midnight and Dorito. Don’t be mad if they don’t talk back, though. They’re goats.
These goats are on assignment cleaning up brush and invasive species in many Madison parks. They belong to Greg Haak and Brooke Hushagen of HaakHagen Goat Grazing, who set the herd up inside a portable electric fence and let them graze. Goats are natural browsers, and the idea is that they’ll naturally eat their way through the park, cleaning up unwanted vegetation and reducing the need for herbicides.
Producer Molly Stentz tracked down the goat wranglers to learn how it’s working.

26 Jul 2023 | Why Madison Has Been So Hot, Smoky and Dry | 00:23:50
While we don’t have hurricanes or a sinking oceanfront, Madison is not immune to our changing climate. It feels like when we’re not flooding, there’s a drought or a heatwave or smoky bad air from Canadian wildfires. Or all of the above. Is this the new normal?
We turned to our new state climatologist, Steve Vavrus, for an explanation.

It’s been more than eight years since Tony Robinson died. The teenager was shot dead by a Madison police officer who responded to a 911 call to Tony’s apartment on Willy Street.
The police department cleared the officer of any wrongdoing. The district attorney declined to prosecute.
Tony’s mother, Andrea Irwin, settled a civil lawsuit against the city in 2017. Her attorneys called it the biggest settlement in Wisconsin history for a police shooting.
But Tony's grandmother, Sharon Irwin-Henry, still wants her day in court.
We sit down with Sharon to learn what’s next.

07 Aug 2023 | What to Expect from Judge Janet’s Court | 00:19:43
It wasn’t long ago that Wisconsin Supreme Court elections were snoozers with low voter turnout. After a raucous decade in Wisconsin politics, that era is over.
Judge Janet Protasiewicz won the statewide office this spring in the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history.
With lawsuits about ballot drop boxes, the state’s political maps and abortion already winding through the courts, big questions over political power, voting rights and liberty are at stake. Now that Judge Janet is on the bench, what can we expect from the new court?
Dylan Brogan caught up with UW-Madison Political Science Professor Howard Schweber, who says that recent moves by the U.S. Supreme Court have made our state court even more important.

09 Aug 2023 | Madison’s Trying to Clean PFAS From Our Water. It’s Not Easy. | 00:22:15
PFAS chemicals show up in all kinds of things: non-stick cookware, stain-resistant clothing, microwave popcorn bags, firefighting foam. They’ve been dubbed “forever” chemicals because they don’t break down in the environment, making them very hard to get rid of. And they’re showing up in our water.
Scientists are still discovering the health risks of PFAS, but research suggests that PFAS exposure increases the risk of kidney and testicular cancer. The CDC says most of us have been exposed to PFAS at some point.
The Madison Water Utility plans to install a PFAS-removing filter at one well that they shut down due to contamination. It’ll cost $6 million dollars. Producer Dylan Brogan caught up with Joe Grande, Water Quality Manager with the Madison Water Utility, to learn how it’ll work.

15 Aug 2023 | The ‘Coolest Little Station in the Nation’ Is In Our Backyard | 00:23:30
Local radio is alive and well in Monona. The Wisconsin Broadcasters Association named 98.7 FM WVMO — the “Voice of Monona” — the Best Radio Station in state in 2022. Not bad for a teeny 100-watt station with an antenna on the fire department’s hose-drying tower. WVMO is owned by the city of Monona, run primarily by volunteers, and airs local programs. You can hear a variety of Americana music, updates on city events, and even a quick hello from the Walsh family on Sullivan Street.
We speak with founder — and Wisconsin Broadcast Hall of Famer — Lindsay Wood Davis who says, “WVMO serves the community without boring it.” And we talk to one of the station’s youngest volunteers, Beatrix Pauli, host of Bea’s Buzz.

22 Aug 2023 | Madison’s Cuban Community Has Stories to Tell | 00:28:15
The Mariel Boatlift exodus has been called one of the U.S.’s most complex waves of immigration.
It was named for the Cuban Port of Mariel, where more than 125,000 people emigrated from in 1980. You’ve likely heard about the large Cuban community that flourished in Miami. But did you know that nearly 15,000 Cuban refugees were sent to Fort McCoy, the U.S. Army base between Tomah and Sparta in southwest Wisconsin? Many settled in Madison. And many didn’t talk about their experience, until now.
Maureen McCollum and Omar Granados tell their stories – and more – in an eight-part podcast. It’s called WPR Reports: Uprooted.

29 Aug 2023 | Farewell, Circus World Elephants! 🐘 | 00:23:45
Elephants are everywhere in Baraboo: painted on the highway overpass, displayed as public art in the park, depicted on murals.
But one place they’re not anymore: at Circus World.
Circus World was the original home to the Ringling Brothers Circus. For more than a hundred years, they’ve included elephants as part of their circus performances. Today, you can still see circus acts there; they’re now owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society.
But as of August 27th, there’s one mammoth change: no more performing circus elephants. Circus World’s last remaining elephants have retired and will now live at a sanctuary in Oklahoma.
So what it’s REALLY like working with elephants? We spoke with professional circus clown Karen DeSanto. Karen worked for both Ringling Bros. and Circus World.

05 Sep 2023 | UW Researchers Can Hack Voice ID With Pipes and Math | 00:18:35
Voice-identification systems, like Siri and Alexa, are becoming common. But they do more than play music or give us directions, they’re now being used as a security measure, like a fingerprint. Banks are beginning to use them to grant us access to our bank accounts.
The only problem? They can be fooled. And not just by generating a computer-generated deepfake. By speaking through a PVC plastic tube.
We catch up with UW-Madison Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. students Shimaa Ahmed and Yash Wani, and assistant professor Kassem Fawaz to learn how.

06 Sep 2023 | You’re Recycling Wrong — Here’s What To Do About It ♻️ | 00:21:40
Madison was the first city in the nation to offer curbside recycling service. But 55 years of celebrating recycling’s virtues has driven us to optimism. We wishfully toss things in the cart and hope for the best. Friends, we are here to tell you that is NOT how this works. In fact, your good deeds are messing things up — gumming up machines and putting workers in harm’s way.
Can you recycle plastic bags? Nope. Those little tabs from your bread bags? Nope. Bottle caps? Nope. And please, for the love of Gaylord Nelson, no shower curtains.
So what’s a Madisonian to do? The city’s Recycling Coordinator Bryan Johnson is here to help sort it all out.

11 Sep 2023 | How We Know Wisconsin’s Maps are Gerrymandered | 00:21:34
Political parties have long known that controlling WHO can vote in an election carries a strategic advantage. Pick your voters, win your election. Hence, we fight over maps.
Data science has made it easier than ever to create maps designed to ensure political outcomes. We now have fewer political districts that look like odd-shaped creatures and more that come from strategic targeting of voters based on data profiles and algorithms.
Princeton University’s Gerrymandering Project calls Wisconsin’s political maps “some of the most extreme partisan gerrymanders in the United States.” The U.S. Supreme Court declined to strike down Wisconsin’s political maps in 2018. But there are two new lawsuits asking the Wisconsin Supreme Court to do so now.
Jordan Ellenberg, UW-Madison math professor, explains how he can prove Wisconsin’s maps are gerrymandered.

12 Sep 2023 | Why Wisconsin Hates Beavers | 00:23:17
Wisconsin has long had mixed feelings about America’s largest rodents. Beavers have been hunted, trapped, had their dams blown up, and were generally considered to be a nuisance by many of the state’s human residents. Once hunted for their fashionable pelts, they’re now removed by the thousands across the state for a variety of reasons. Madison Parks says beaver dams could cause flooding in nearby soccer fields, golf courses and parking lots; beavers also chew trees at their base, creating potential safety hazards in public areas. Beavers have also been blamed for making streams too warm for trout.
Yet many other states welcome beavers, even importing them for their ecosystem benefits. Among other things, they create wetlands, which can act as fire breaks, reducing wildfire damage. They’re known as a keystone species, because they create habitat for many other animals. So why is Wisconsin an outlier?
Susan Lampert Smith gives us the lay of the land (and water). She wrote about Wisconsin’s fight over beaver management for Isthmus.

13 Sep 2023 | Wisconsin’s Supreme Court Battle Keeps Getting Uglier | 00:22:20
For the first time in 15 years, liberals have a majority on the officially non-partisan Wisconsin Supreme Court. But the court’s locked in a power struggle with the Republican-controlled state legislature. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has threatened to impeach the newly-elected Justice Janet Protasiewicz and change the balance of power. Now, voters have sued, seeking to block any impeachment vote. Meanwhile, tensions are high between the justices on the court.
We speak to Jack Kelly, statehouse reporter for Wisconsin Watch, for the latest on how the political divisiveness is playing out behind the scenes.

18 Sep 2023 | What City Trees Do and Who Cares For Them | 00:25:30
Madison is known as a Tree City for its efforts to care for urban trees. Keeping a diverse mix of healthy trees in the city requires constantly planting new ones every year as well as maintaining those planted years ago. City trees in Madison have to be able to withstand freezing winters, sidewalk salt, power lines above, concrete all around, and the occasional car crashing into them. Not to mention insect pests like Emerald Ash Borer.
For all trees put up with in our urban environment, the benefits they deliver are enumerable: shade, shelter, beauty, fresh oxygen, homes for animals, planet cooling.
But who speaks for those trees? City Forester Ian Brown does. City forestry staff advise on what and where trees get planted and how we, as a city, can care for some of the city’s oldest residents.
Today, we’re peeking behind the curtain of Madison’s City Forestry department.

Bianca Martin speaks with filmmaker Trevor Banks about why Stubblefield should get his due.

20 Sep 2023 | What’s Happening With the Madison Public Market | 00:22:05
The Madison Public Market has been a dream for decades. Three mayors have tried. With a proposed opening in 2025, it’s now the closest it’s ever been to becoming reality.
The city plans to remodel its former Fleet Service building on 200 N. First Street and turn it into a business incubator and mall for food-related businesses. It’s a mix of a food court, a shopping center, and a community event space. They’ve secured the space, hired architects and have building designs in hand. They’ve spent years recruiting and prepping vendors to be ready to fill it. They’ve raised millions in both public and private funds.
But now, costly construction bids are threatening to derail the project. We speak with Madison Public Market Foundation Board President Karen Crossley about the vision for the market and where they are in the process.
Note: We spoke to Karen Crossley on September 15, 2023, before she had reviewed the project construction bids.
Crossley says, on behalf of the Madison Public Market Foundation, “We support the introduction of a resolution at the 10/3 City Council mtg that will address the current construction funding gap and allow the Madison Public Market project to move forward. Our commitment is unwavering. We will continue working closely with the City to fully fund the construction project, and to fulfill the goals and mission of the Public Market.”
