We’re sharpening our knives this week for our long-anticipated review of the latest Scream film, or Scream 5 unofficially. And afterward, we discuss George Clooney’s latest directorial effort, The Tender Bar, which is based on the memoir by J.R. Moehringer and stars Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, and Lily Rabe. Show Notes:

We open this week’s show with some film catchup — what we’ve been watching and what we’ve been hearing chatter about — and be sure to stick around for our second review, Passing, which is the directorial debut of Rebecca Hall, stars Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga, and hits Netflix next weekend. 25 Feb 2025 | Nickel Boys – Film Review | 00:36:09
In this week’s episode, Jon Negroni and Will Ashton take a deep dive into Nickel Boys, the latest film from director RaMell Ross (Hale County This Morning, This Evening). An adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the film follows two Black teenagers trapped in the harrowing realities of Nickel Academy, a reform school in 1960s Florida that crushes hope as efficiently as it enforces silence. With Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson leading the cast and a uniquely immersive first-person perspective, Nickel Boys has drawn a lot of critical acclaim, but does it earn its accolades? Jon and Will unpack the film’s daring cinematography, its unconventional narrative structure, and Ross’s refusal to hold the audience’s hand. They debate the film’s Oscar prospects, its underwhelming box office reception, and why its use of silence might be its most powerful weapon. Plus, how does Nickel Boys fit into the tradition of documentary filmmakers transitioning into narrative storytelling? And yes, Will finds a way to compare it to The Tree of Life, because of course he does. Links:

02 Aug 2023 | Oppenheimer | 00:55:59
Special guest Parth Sanghvi joins us for the first time ever to review Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan's follow-up to 2020's Tenet, which for sure came out under normal circumstances. We open the show, however, with a quick visit from a couple old friends and Nolan super-fans before diving into the discussion (00:04:00) and finishing out with the Rotten Tomatoes Game. Oppenheimer was also written by Nolan and is based on the 2005 biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer, American Prometheus, by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. The ensemble cast is quite massive, but we'll let you know a few of the heavy hitters: Cillian Murphy (as Oppenheimer himself), Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, and many more. Oppenheimer opened nationwide on July 21 through Universal Pictures and has a 180-minute runtime. Our intro music this week is “Which One?” by Glimlip & .multibeat. Links:

A24's most expensive film to date, and likely to be one of their highest grossers to boot, the war drama stars Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaney, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Nick Offerman, and Jesse Plemons, and it has had everyone talking since it blew into theaters on April 12. 23 Jan 2025 | Interview – Harrison Xu and Ivan Leung talk 'Extremely Unique Dynamic' | 00:55:35
Today on Cinemaholics, we’re joined by two hilarious and incredibly talented filmmakers/actors, Harrison Xu and Ivan Leung, to talk about their new indie film, Extremely Unique Dynamic. This queer Asian meta stoner coming-of-age dramedy takes storytelling to a whole new level—it’s a movie about two guys making a movie about two guys making a movie. Yes, it’s as wonderfully chaotic as it sounds. Extremely Unique Dynamic has been making waves, playing at over 25 film festivals and breaking box office records during its LA theatrical run. In this episode, Harrison and Ivan share the wild journey of creating a deeply personal, yet entirely universal story that subverts stoner comedy tropes while addressing themes of representation, identity, and authenticity. We dive into everything—how they infused the film with their real-life personalities, their unexpected success at festivals, and even a bit of party bus pole-dancing backstory. Along the way, we also discuss pop-punk soundtracks, karaoke go-tos, and what they hope this movie will mean 50 years from now. Plus, we get into some lighter moments, including their favorite reality TV shows, nostalgic movie picks, and the unexpected challenges of doing Q&As. Whether you’re a fan of stoner comedies, indie filmmaking, or unique dynamics (see what we did there?), this is an episode you won’t want to miss. Catch Extremely Unique Dynamics at upcoming screenings in LA, San Francisco, New York, and even Vancouver, with VOD release just around the corner. Links:

That's right, we're reviewing The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which surprisingly isn't the Will Ashton biopic stuck in development hell. No, this is a high-concept meta comedy action movie starring Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself(?), as he gets roped into a crime caper alongside Pedro Pascal. 31 Dec 2020 | Brazil (1985), Edward Scissorhands (1990) | 02:08:59
To officially conclude this year's Extra Milestone lineup, Jon Negroni and Will Ashton of the Cinemaholics podcast joined forces with me one last time to discuss two distinct (and oddly holiday-centric) auteur-driven classics. We start our conversation by digging through the muck of Terry Gilliam's Brazil, a bureaucratic odyssey of madness often regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. After that, we jump forward to Edward Scissorhands, an intensely personal story from Tim Burton that is both lighthearted and melancholy, and which has affected us all at one point or another. SHOW NOTES:

If you say "Shazam," you know us Cinemaholics will show up, albeit as the darker, grittier versions of ourselves. Are we smelling what the Rock is cooking in his cinematic kitchen this time? That's right, Dwayne Johnson is officially a live-action superhero (though when hasn't he, really?), making his DCEU debut in Black Adam. But this isn't your older brother's best friend from college Dwayne Johnson. No, he's glowering. Oh, and murdering people a lot. Hear what we have to say about this movie, along with the expected — nay, inevitable — continuation of the only global conflict anyone can seem to talk about these days. The Pizza Wars. Show Notes:

29 May 2023 | The Little Mermaid (2023) – Directed by Rob Marshall | 01:03:31
Well, Disney remade another one of their classic animated movies in live-action format, which means it's time to dive into The Little Mermaid, from the same director of the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. We open the show this week briefly chatting about other movies we're looking forward to this coming month, then it's onto our review and a general look at what's coming next for these Disney live-action remakes. Last, we finish the show with the Rotten Tomatoes Game and a bonus segment looking at a ranking of the Disney live-action remakes according to their RT scores. The Little Mermaid was directed by Rob Marshall with David Magee as screenwriter. The original story is adapted, loosely, from Hans Christian Andersen's 1837 fairy tale. The film stars Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy. It features new music by Lin-Manuel Miranda and reworked compositions from Alan Menken (who composed the original 1989 animated film). Our intro music this week is “Wind Flower” by Toti Cisneros. 11 May 2022 | Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – Horror or Horrible? | 01:31:11
The first big MCU movie of 2022 is here, and we exist in a universe where we talk about it. After some quick box office catchup, we discuss the highs and lows of recent Marvel movies (and the Disney+ shows) before digging into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a sequel to the 2016 film, but also an "event" Marvel movie with crossover characters like Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and of course Benedict Cumberbatch, directed by the one and only Sam Raimi! 05 Oct 2021 | Venom: Let There Be Carnage | 01:42:25
Speaking of toxic relationships, have you watched the new Venom movie, Venom: Let There Be Carnage? Tom Hardy returns as the sweaty, parasitic antihero, this time contending with the blood-red Carnage, played by Woody Harrelson. We review this latest comic-book movie from Sony and try to understand why these movies are so popular. Later in the show, we discuss The Many Saints of Newark, a prequel movie for the hit prestige drama The Sopranos, starring Michael Gandolfini (son of the late James Gandolfini) as a teenage Tony Soprano, which is now in theaters and playing on HBO Max for a limited time. 30 Nov 2020 | Raging Bull (1980), One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) | 01:35:54
Even in the midst of a year as hectic and unconventional as this one, Oscar season is still in full swing when it comes to this week’s selection of heavy hitters. Joining me once again for the first time in nearly three years is Maria Garcia, my former partner in crime from such shows as Now Conspiring and Part-Time Characters, and we’re discussing two films often hailed as being among the greatest of all time! We begin with Raging Bull, the morally complex sports biopic that saved Martin Scorsese’s life and has developed a widely varied legacy, and which one of us isn’t especially fond of! From there, we rewind the clock to visit Miloš Forman’s award season darling One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, a wholly unique classic within film history that holds up wonderfully to this day! What is the nature of tragedy? How far can sympathy and empathy take us? Has Sam become completely unrecognizable in the past three years? Which actor’s appearance in Cuckoo’s Nest has traumatized Maria on more than one occasion, and who emerges as the unexpected MVP of the film? Tune in to this week’s Extra Milestone for all of those answers and more. NOTE: Due to an unfortunate (and ultimately miraculously avoided) technical error, the final 15~ minutes of the episode were slightly distorted. Sorry about that! SHOW NOTES:
HOSTED BY: Sam Noland and Maria Garcia MUSIC IN THIS EPISODE: Music from Raging Bull composed by Pietro Mascagni, music from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest composed by Jack Nitzsche

11 Sep 2017 | It | 00:35:58 | |
The Cinemaholics were out of town this week, but they found time to gather around for a scary review of a scary movie called It, directed by Andy Muschietti and starring Bill Skarsgård, Jaeden Lieberher, and Sophia Lillis. This remake of the mini-series based on the massive novel by Stephen King is certainly one to keep an eye on, but is It really all that good? Does It live up to the hype? Jon, Maveryke, and Will debate and discuss. Check out our Patreon to support Cinemaholics!
