The unique and primal sound of Desert Blues from the musicians of Mali and nomadic tribes of the Sahara is less an offshoot of "the blues" as closer to its original root before the music was filtered through the African slave experience, through the Delta, and permeated American culture. This music is a modern interpretation of that ancient music, lovingly crafted by African musicians since the '70s, including some highly prominent and now-famous musicians including Ali Farka Toure, who once said, "The guys in Mississippi are playing American-Malian music, not the other way around."

Tom The Suit Forst speaks with Damon Fowler, a blues journeyman originating from Tampa, Florida, whose latest album has been produced by Tab Benoit in rural Louisiana. Damon cites Johnny Winter and Muddy Waters as key influences.

On Episode 1 of Chasing the Blues Season 2 - Tom interviews harmonica player James Montgomery who has played with Johnny Winter, Foghat, and Allman Brothers. He discusses his time traveling down Highway 61, his time in Clarksdale, MS, his upcoming film documentary about blues pioneer and legendary harp player James Cotton, and other stories.

On Season2 / Episode 2, Tom checks in with Albert Castiglia who tells more of his story, how he survived his first job in out of college with the Florida Welfare Office and went on to perform with his mentor, Chicago bluesman, Junior Wells.

On Chasing the Blues Podcast Season 2/Episode 3, Tom The Suit Forst goes behind the scenes for a personal chat with blues-rock guitarist Gary Hoey. Their talk ranges from Gary's music to his work as Music Director for the Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp. They also talk about his career, and the state of the music industry during and post-Covid-19.

On Chasing the Blues Season 2/Episode 4, Tom the Suit Forst chats with Delmark Records recording artist Johnny Burgin. The conversation includes stories about Burgin's days playing guitar with the legendary Pinetop Perkins, a gig he landed right out of college, "long before I was ready," he says. In his impressive career, "Rockin Johnny Burgin" has recorded nine albums, in addition to playing on numerous albums as a sideman to a who's who list of blues legends.

On Season 2/Episode 5 of Chasing the Blues Podcast, Tom The Suit Forst chats with "King of Biker Blues" Pat Savage. The musician and recording artist, accomplished filmmaker, actor, and life-long motorcyclist discusses his deep friendship with Jeff Healey and being discovered by Albert Collins. Pat also talks about his world travels, filming a motorcycle travel television show.

On this episode of Chasing the Blues Podcast (Season 2/Episode 6) Tom catches up with guitarist Seth James, who makes his second appearance on the podcast.

About Seth James:

Authenticity and originality don’t always make for the most compatible bedfellows. Indeed, paying reverence to one’s roots sometimes moots the possibility of finding contemporary credence. Happily though, in the case of the Texas born and bred singer/songwriter Seth James, all those elements find equal footing.

That’s especially evident with the release of Good Life, James’ new album, a rugged and unabashedly assertive blend of blues, country, roots, rock, and Americana. From the sassy strut of opening track “Brother” and the loping rhythms of the catchy and danceable “That’s How You Do It,” to the soulful sentiment of “Little Angel” and the assertive strains of “The Time I Love the Most,” the twelve song set runs a gamut of heartfelt emotion filtered through unfaltering conviction and homespun appeal.

Produced and mixed by Kevin McKendree (Little Richard, Etta James, Sean Chambers), and recorded at The Rock House in Franklin, Tennessee, Good Life resonates with an honesty and integrity that could have only been spawned by someone who’s known the toils and triumphs spawned in America’s heartland.

James sums up those sentiments in the title track itself. Written with Kevin McKendree and Bob Britt, the song represents the emotion imbued in the album overall. “It was important to me that this album had an overall positive feel,” James explains. “I always found it easy to be dark and brooding, but using happiness is a trick. Of course, it’s pretty easy to write happy when you’re writing with two of your heroes like Kevin and Bob are to me. “This song is a good representation of where I’m at now and where I wanna stay.”

On the other hand, the song “I’m Coming Home“ is the album’s oldest entry. It was also written with McKendree. “We wrote it almost 10 years ago,” James recalls. “From that day forward, we both knew we wanted to make an album together. It just took a while for the pieces to fall in place. However, I suspect that anyone who has to travel for living will find a home with this song.”

Likewise, James cites the track “Third Generation” as the most personal song of the set. He notes that it was written during an intense period of anger and frustration, and that it was important for him to express those emotions and bring them to the fore.

“In the place that I grew up, it’s very common to find that the later generations who inherit the family ranches typically do not share the same work ethic and values of their forefathers,” James says. “Very often, they squabble and argue and ultimately sell off what it took generations to build. This song allowed me to put my finger in those people’s faces. It’s not about the land as much as it is about the kind of person which that lifestyle produces. I don’t believe this world can afford to lose people who share that kind of dedication.”

In fact, James knows those values all too well. Born in Fort Worth and raised in the ranch country of West Texas, he comes from a family who knew the rewards that come from drive, determination and hard work. His grandfather was a honky tonk piano player who performed as Tooter Boatman and the Chaparrals in any number of clubs, juke joints and roadhouses in the 40's and 50's. His other grandfather was a Texas Ranger. His father, Tom Moorhouse, founded the Moorhouse Ranch and imbued in his son the values spawned from western tradition.

“Growing up, I spent the majority of my life on a horse,” James recalls. “It was the kind of ranch where we would do things the old-fashioned way, whether it was herding the cattle, bringing out the chuckwagon to feed the cowboys, or camping on the trail under the stars. To this day I still prefer to sleep on the ground.”

Not surprisingly then, the romantic road stories shared by his forebears had an important influence of James’s decision to pursue his passion. Early on, he taught himself to play guitar, mostly by learning the songs of Lightning Hopkins, Freddy King and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

“Years later in college, I had a regular gig at a juke joint called the Big Wheel in Navasota, Texas where Lightning and Mance Lipscomb spent many years,” he remembers. “It was fun to play for their family members and to hear stories from their relatives’ first-hand accounts.”

In 1996 Seth got his first Fender Stratocaster and quickly discovered the sheer power and expression that’s possible by playing an electric guitar. “As a young man, I was drawn to the music that was coming out of Lubbock and Fort Worth,” he recalls. “The early influences of Joe Ely, Delbert McClinton, Stephen Bruton, and Doyle Bramhall Sr. ultimately led me too many of the musicians that impacted me later on, such as Frankie Miller and Freddie King.”

Over the course of his career, James has had the opportunity to share the stage with many of his heroes, among them, Percy Sledge, Little Feat, Delbert McClinton, Buddy Guy, Tab Benoit, ZZ Top, Little Feat, Lee Roy Parnell, Leon Russell, and Billy Joe Shaver. He’s released three solo albums, most notably 2009’s critically acclaimed effort That Kind of Man. In 2010, he joined forces with Cody Canada and formed The Departed, with whom he spent three years and recorded two albums. Ultimately, he opted to return to his roots and his primary passion, which was to fashion a sound infused with the blues.

With Good Life, he’s sums up his satisfaction succinctly.

“I never made the decision to be a musician,” James insists. “I just started doing what I loved and it got out of hand. I’ve been doing it ever since.”

The results speak for themselves.

On Episode 13 of Chasing the Blues Podcast Season 2, Tom The Suit Forst goes deep into the history of the Ann Arbor Blues Festival, which became one of the most historically significant festivals when it began in 1969. The historic festival, the first of its kind, put artists like BB King, Howlin' Wolf, Earl hooker, Albert King, Benny King, Son House and other legendary, original African-American blues artists on a major stage performing for a predominantly white, middle class audience exposed to such music for the first time. This festival not only set the stage for many blues festivals that followed throughout the country, and the world, but had a direct influence on notable attendees who would later become musical superstars in their own right - such as Bonnie Raitt, and producer Don Was, who was at the time a student at the University of Michigan.

On the podcast, Tom. speaks with James Partridge, who revived the Ann Arbor Blues Festival in 2017. James shares not only the spectacular history and cultural significance of the festival, but also shares interesting insights into the challenges of running such a large scale music festival. Tom The Suit Forst catches up with the legendary Mark Farner, vocalist of Grand Funk, in Episode 16 of Chasing the Blues Podcast Season 2. Mark gives Tom some inside information about the recording of "I'm Your Captain," one of Tom's favorite blues-rock songs, which Grand Funk released in 1970. Sir Rod Patterson of Sir Rod and the Blues Doctors, joins Tom The Suit Forst on Chasing the Blues 2, Ep 21, for a sit down to talk about the band's debut blues album "Come Together."
The band features percussion and "lead harmonica" by Adam Gussow. Gussow is best known for being part of "Satan and Adam, a blues duo consisting of Sterling Magee, known by his stage name "Mister Satan", and Gussow. The two men were a fixture on Harlem's sidewalks in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their unique story was captured in a recent film documentary on Netflix.

Sir Rod is himself the nephew of Sterling Magee, inspired by the film, and his uncle's music, to sing the blues. He formed the Blues Doctors with Adam Gussow, and guitarist Alan Gross. "Come Together" is their debut record release July 20, 2020, which is getting radio airplay on Bluesville (Sirius XM) and stations throughout the world. When he is not singing the blues, Sir Rod is also a motivational speaker in Atlanta, GA where he runs anti-bullying campaigns. This is a fascinating and honest discussion that you don't want to miss!

Tom The Suit Forst chats with Tom Burger, a blues guitarist who plays in a "Blues Revival" band titled the Creature Collective, on Chasing the Blues 2/ episode 26. Burger calls the music a unique mix of blues, rock, roots, jam and psychedelic. As such, we would say he and his group are on the forefront of young musicians taking the blues in new directions. On Episode 29 of Chasing the Blues Season 2, Tom Forst spends some time with Freddye Stover, aka Miss Freddye. For the past 25 years, Miss Freddye has been singing the blues throughout her Western Pennsylvania hometown of Pittsburgh. From barrooms and nightclubs, to charity events, VFWs and American Legions, Miss Freddye is often recognized as the town’s Leading Lady of the Blues. In fact, she has also been recognized on the national music scene with two Blues Foundation Awards nominations for her 2017 album, Lady Of The Blues.

Miss Freddye is an artist with an incredible story of bravery and perseverance which she shares with Tom in this insightful interview, including her experiences as a breast cancer survivor, as well as her work as a surgical nurse helping treat other cancer patients. She also discussed her experience using music to help her son who is on the spectrum Autism to break through, himself becoming a harmonic player and her number one fan!

International Blues Festival Champion Kevin Burt joins Tom The Suit Forst on Chasing the Blues 2, Episode 31.

For more than 25 years Kevin Burt has been electrifying audiences throughout the Midwest dispelling the myth that true blues has no roots in Iowa. His soul-inspired presentation is unique which consistently get him compared to a range of artists like Bill Withers and Aaron Neville, with the ability to build an audience rapport that has been compared to B.B. King.

Kevin Burt has won many awards and played many festivals both solo and with his band, the Instigators. His awards include Best Entertainer in Iowa City (three times) Best Band in Iowa City (three times) Iowa Blues Challenge Champions, Named as one of the top 25 unsigned blues bands in the world by the International Blues Challenge Competition.

Kevin is also recognized as one of the Midwest’s top blues heritage educators. This honor was given to him by the Governor of Iowa, Chet Culver in February of 2009. Kevin is a registered artist, and artist educator with the state of Iowa Arts Council. He has also written and published a classroom harmonica method book called “Just Play It: an introduction to blues harmonica.” His approach is simple, education through entertainment. His program has been going strong since 1994. Burt plans to continue this work as well as his community work with Children and the arts. With the support of his family and community, good things will be happening for Kevin “B.F.” Burt in 2019.

In a comparably short career, Kevin Burt has shared the stage in one form or another with a who’s who in the music world. B.B. Fee Waybill, singer and frontman of The Tubes joins Tom The Suit Forst in this latest podcast episode of Chasing the Blues, Season 2, Episode 32.

In 1984, a year after the Tubes released one of their most successful albums, Waybill released his first solo album called Read My Lips. In 1996, Waybill released another album called Don't Be Scared By These Hands.

Now in 2020, the life long singer-songwriter returns with a new solo album "Fee Waybill Rides Again," and on the podcast he takes Tom through the songs on the album, their development, working with producer Richard Marx. He shares insight into his writing process, and a rare glimpse into a lifetime of music making.
