22 Aug 2016#1) Tips for Millenials from a Top Recruiter00:31:01

Welcome to our first episode of The Career Warrior Podcast (formerly Let's Eat, Grandma Job Seekers Podcast)! The goal of the podcast series is to spread best job seeking practices to those hunting for their dream job.

I brought on Jordan Weber, a producer from Top Recruiter. Top Recruiter is a reality show that takes a look at how rockstar human resources professionals compete to be the best candidate in their profession (much in the way that Top Chef does for culinary arts).

When Jordan is not producing TV shows in Europe, she actively recruits candidates for Currency, one of the fastest growing financial services firms in the US.

Here is more information about Jordan and Top Recruiter.

https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordanwweber

http://toprecruiter.tv/

You will want to listen to this podcast if you've ever wondered the following:

- What qualities do recruiters really look for in a candidate?

-How much does LinkedIn matter?

-Are thank you notes worth it?

-What is my biggest weakness (or what should I tell this interviewer...?)

We hope you enjoy, and don't forget to hit that subscribe button.

29 Aug 2018#8) Three Things Hiring Managers Want to See in Your Resume00:26:05

Have you ever wondered what hiring managers actually want to see on a resume? Let’s Eat, Grandma interviewed 3 experienced hiring managers here in Austin to get everything – the good the bad and ugly-- of the resumes they receive.

Questions:

1.)  What makes hiring managers put candidates in the YES pile?

2.)  What makes hiring managers throw resumes in the TRASH?

3.)  Where do the majority of new hires come from?

4.)  What percentage of cover letters do hiring managers actually read?

5.)  Do recruiters prefer PDF or Word Doc?

6.)  How long do hiring managers actually spend on each resume?

7.)  What’s one thing that someone said during an interview that immediately disqualified them? (If you don’t have a good story, then you can make it hypothetical like what would turn you off in an interview.)

8.)  If you could give one piece of advice for everyone in the room who is looking for a job, what would it be?

12 Sep 2018#9) How long should your resume be? | Just-ask-Chris MINISODE #100:09:29

This is...the Let’s Eat, Grandma podcast number 9 – this is Just-Ask-Chris Minisode #1.

We are going to take commonly asked job search questions, break them down, and give you the information as one in-depth answer.

Why a minisode? We wanted to give you another way to learn complex information. We take the complex information with a million different rules (like resume writing in the English language) and give you a way to digest it easily. Little resume snacks if you will.

We are doing this for those go getters who are hyper learners. So those who really want to take a moment in their life—walking to work, waiting in line at the doctor’s office, whatever—and pick something to learn. These episodes will be very SHORT. That is, around 5-10 minutes to make sure that you get a good answer as quickly as possible.

TOPIC:

In this podcast, you are going to learn the answer to one of the most commonly asked questions about resumes.

How long should it be?!

Why is this such a hot topic?

What are some example scenarios of a one-page resume vs. a two page resume?

The core concept: The resume should be as long as it needs to be — but short enough to remain interesting.

Please note: that there are a few industries and positions that would expect you to submit a longer resume. Three examples:

·      Federal resumes that ask you about everything you did

·      Academia. (Cover letters even)

·      IT Consultant positions that want to look at detail of all your past work.

If you would like us to evaluate your resume and assess a proper length, please submit your resume to projects@letseatgrandma.com

Please also let us know what you thought of this podcast :)

31 Oct 2018#15) Listen to This When You Feel Rejected00:24:10

Welcome to Episode #15: Listen to this episode when you feel rejected.

  • You may have applied for a job that you were really interested in -- and got turned down because someone thought you were unqualified.
  • You may have applied to 100 jobs—and not gotten one call back.
  • You may have gotten passed up on a promotion.

The goal of this episode is to lift you out of a rejected state -- and get you in a place where you can continue fighting for your purpose.

Preview of Core Concepts of Understanding Rejection:

  1. Everybody goes through it—even some of the greatest people in our history. (Henry Ford, Michael Jordan, Albert Einstein, J.K. Rowling)
  2. Understand what you are feeling and why you are feeling it. (There is a science behind acknowledging your emotion: research has shown that when you identify what core emotion you are feeling, then it instantly becomes more manageable).
  3. Remember that your core identity (who you really are) goes way beyond these external things.

What to do now.

  • Keep going: case and point. Remember that the results-oriented things in life (your success) is a numbers game.
  • Find a group of people trying to achieve the same thing that you are. Relate to them.
  • When you feel rejected, label your emotion, and remind yourself of your core identity -- and why you're going to keep going.

05 Dec 2018#20) How to Develop Your Personal Brand00:23:35

Welcome to the 20th episode of the Let’s Eat, Grandma Career Warrior Podcast! (This was formerly the LEG Job Seeker's Podcast). Today we are going to talk about how you can establish or continue to improve your own personal brand.

Everyone has their own personal brand whether they know it or not.

But here’s the caveat: Most people don’t know they can easily impact the direction, strength, or even awareness of their brand – and use it to their advantage.

Why should we all have our own personal brands?

Having a solid personal brand can…

  • Give you more direction in your career.
  • Help your social life flourish.
  • Take your confidence to new heights.
  • Boost others’ confidence in you!
  • Open up doors for promotion in the future.
  • Further your professional connections.
  • Strengthen the connections you already have!

Here are four things you can do at right now to start developing your personal brand:

  • #1. Define what your brand is and what you love doing.
  • #2. Rework your elevator pitch.
  • #3. Do a social media audit.
  • #4. Involve yourself in the community.

Remember that your brand is an ongoing, ever-evolving thing. So if you’re not happy with where you are now, change it. If your brand stops serving you in the future, you can always change it. Just remember to have an awareness of your brand so you can use it to your advantage!

Wrapping it up:

Leave us a review on iTunes!!! (We may even give you a shout-out next episode).

Together with his team, Mark has served over 600,000 hypnosis downloads and treated 5,000 patients in personal one-on-one therapy. He’s helped thousands upon thousands improve their self-esteem and overcome major life obstacles including depression, panic attacks, and anxiety.

DISCLAIMER: Mark is actually going to perform a mini-hypnosis session at the end for all of you guys to get acquainted with the practice. You heard me right…you’re getting hypnotized. I can’t emphasize this enough: please find a good place to do this session. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery. Is it your confidence? Is it interview nerves? Is it your inability to face criticism? We are here to help you, and this session is going to help on the deeper level.

Here's what we cover:

  • What is hypnosis? Would love to go into some of the misconceptions people have about it vs. what is actually is!
  • Why is it important to go way beyond conscious mind? Can’t I just “think” myself better when dealing with my issues?
  • How long does it really take to change? What kind of results should I expect from hypnotherapy?
  • What do you think are some behaviors and thought patterns that are holding back people in their careers? How can they deal with them?
  • We will end by offering a sneak peak into hypnosis.

09 Jan 2019#25) Hack Your Job Search with More Efficient Communication | Andrew McCann, Founder of 11trees 00:42:10

Until 2/15: Get the CAREER WARRIOR APP for free here: https://mailchi.mp/letseatgrandma/careerwarriorappsignup

Welcome to the 25th episode of the Let’s Eat, Grandma Career Warrior Podcast! Today we are going to show you how you can communicate more efficiently in your career.

But first, let me ask you this: How long does it take for you to send out messages? Maybe you just met 10 people at a networking event and the idea of following up with them sounds daunting.

Truth is, writing is more important than ever in the workplace. Knowledge workers spend all day writing: email messages, user stories, blog posts...And traditional education systems typically don’t do a great job teaching us how to write for the workplace.

  • But how do you message that CEO you just met to build a relationship that may lead to your dream gig?
  • How do you craft a cover letter for a job application that is personal, specific to the position, and concise?
  • How can you be more efficient completing online applications to scale your outbound efforts?
  • As importantly, how do you do get all this writing done efficiently?

By the end of this episode, you will have the opportunity to save HOURS of your job search or at work. Because, we are going to motivate you and show you how you can be more efficient. And at the end of this episode, we are going to show you how you can get a special tool which can cut your wasted time in half.

Andrew McCann is the Founder of 11Trees, a company dedicated to great helping people scale engagement through great writing.

Andrew taught writing and engineering design at Drexel University for 10 years -- and realized how much time was wasted on writing comments for his students. He personally developed an application that would cut down the amount of time typing these things and allowed himself and many others to give more personal feedback, while cutting down the time it took.

According to Andrew, he is a “code whisperer, client earner, support guru, and overall strategist”

So stop wasting time with your messages and get personal.

Questions we cover:

  • Who’s Andrew McCann? Any exciting, funny, or awkward stories you can recall from your Drexel or GE life?
  • What gave Andrew the idea to develop 11trees?
  • Why do we spend so much time typing messages to people?
  • Is it all really productive?
  • How personal do we really need to get in our messages?
  • What should a good reachout message look like for someone?
  • What are all the different ways the Career Warrior App can be used? Who should be using it?
  • How much time we can we actually save here?
  • How can I most effectively use the Career Warrior Apps to boost workplace productivity while saving time?

16 Jan 2019#26) Should you upload your resume as a PDF or Word Document? | Just-Ask-Chris MINISODE #300:09:17

Perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions in regards to job applications and ATS software is whether or not to submit your resume as a PDF or Word Document. We don't blame you for your concern. That is why Chris Villanueva, CPRW at Let's Eat, Grandma resume services decided to break down the key differences in submitting your resume as a PDF or a Word Document.

Word Doc vs. PDF (Spark Notes Version)

Here is the Spark Notes version of the podcast episode:

  • Word Documents are better for ATS Systems. ATS systems are better able to pick up on keywords if they are submitted as a Word Document.
  • PDF documents are better for visual consistency. PDFs are image files (naturally) – and therefore cannot be easily altered.
  • Recruiters tend to prefer Word Documents over other formats. Recruiters will generally prefer Word Documents, so don’t you dare send your RTF file! Many recruiters also prefer PDF documents.
  • Don’t forget to follow instructions. Remember that if there are instructions to send in a specific format, follow those instructions. Being a rebel does not look good – nor does being ignorant.

30 Jan 2019#28) Do Cover Letters Matter Anymore? | Just-ask-Chris MINISODE #400:12:34

Until 2/15: Get the CAREER WARRIOR APP for free here: https://mailchi.mp/letseatgrandma/careerwarriorappsignup

Welcome to the 28th episode of the Let’s Eat, Grandma Career Warrior Podcast, where our goal is to not only help you land your dream job but to be the best professional you can be.

Today, we are going to address the question, “Do cover letters really matter?”

Maybe you’ve spent hours and hours writing different versions of your cover letter, and you’re not even sure if they are getting read. Maybe you’ve never been asked to submit a cover letter...

Here are the questions we address:

  • Do cover letters matter?
  • Why do cover letters get a bad reputation?
  • Do cover letters even read cover letters?

Here are the three main reasons why you should consider writing a cover letter:

  1. Cover letters offer you the opportunity to stand out in your job application.
  2. You can say things in cover letters that would otherwise be awkward in a cover letter.
  3. How do you fit the company culture of a specific company?
  4. Why you are in the industry you are in?
  5. What stories you have on the job?
  6. How has your career has been progressing over the last few years?
  7. Most of all, cover letters afford the opportunity to sway recruiters who would otherwise be on the fence about you.
  8. Location changers
  9. Career Changers

Thanks for tuning in, and we will see you next time!

14 Feb 2019#30) Uncovering the Hidden Job Market | Informational Interviews | Mac Prichard of Mac's List00:42:04

Today, we are going to delve into the art of informational interviews.

I am proud to bring on Mac Prichard, who is a true authority in informational interviews. Mac Prichard founded Mac’s List, an online platform that connects job seekers with meaningful work opportunities in Portland. Mac has taught both employers and job seekers to build a better job search landscape through courses, books, events, and even his very own weekly career advice podcast: Find Your Dream Job. (https://www.macslist.org/podcasts)

Mac --a graduate of The University of Iowa and Harvard University--built two small businesses through a foundation of networking. He

has taught thousands of people how to grow their careers through relationships.

To take a passage from his bio: “Mac shows job seekers and employers how to break down the barriers between them by teaching preparation, empathy, and people-focused hiring practices with a practical, nuts-and-bolts style that’s accessible for everyone.”

Here's what we cover:

Part 1: Setting the Stage

Who’s Mac Prichard?

Defining the subject material...

  • Let’s define informational interviews first. What are we talking about here when we are referencing this special type of interview?
  • Any successful or unsuccessful informational interview stories from your life?

Motivation/the why...

  • Why should informational interviews be a part of someone’s job search strategy? Let's touch upon the concept of the hidden job market.
  • How can this lead into getting a job?

Part 2: Conducting Informational Interviews:

First steps...

Let’s talk about that first step. How do I even find the right people to conduct interviews with?

Reachout messages...

  • What does a good reachout message look like for informational interviews?
  • What if I don’t get a response?

General Advice on informational interviews...

  • As a job seeker, what’s a good attitude to have vs. a bad attitude when scouting for informational interviews?
  • What do you think is the biggest mistake a job seeker can make who is trying to network this way and why? (Give “reverse advice” on how someone can waste their time networking right now).
  • What’s your number #1 piece of advice for an informational interview?
  • How much time should be devoted to chasing informational interviews vs. applying online to job postings via Indeed, Zip Recruiter, etc.?

When you get the interview...

  • What preparation (if any) should be done prior to an informational interview? Is there a helpful mindset for you to be in?
  • What do I wear?
  • Is there an ideal location?
  • What is the general tone/attitude you should have when you’re actually in the moment of the interview? For an actual interview, it’s conveying your experiences and accomplishments by answering questions, but what’s the general vibe here?
  • Is there homework to be done after the interview?

11 Apr 2019#38) What Experience Should I Cut from My Resume? | Just Ask Chris #600:14:10

This is another Just-Ask-Chris minisode where I try and answer a commonly asked job seeker question in under 10 minutes! Today, we discuss what experience you should remove from your resume.

Core concepts in the podcast episode:

  • The resume as a marketing piece vs. the all encompassing document.
  • Look to the job postings! This is golden rule #1 because you'll have no direction whatsoever.
  • Why you should cut out fluff and where to start looking.
  • Your summary probably sucks.
  • Favor accomplishments over experiences. It's okay to talk about descriptions but do be specific and not vague. Show context.
  • Start looking at older experiences with suspicion...if you're going to include stuff, keep it super short (AND MAKE SURE IT'S relevant in the first place).

25 Apr 2019#40) How to Deal With Angry Customers | Maintaining Your Zen00:24:46

Is the customer always right? Email us what you think at projects@letseatgrandma.com We’d also love to hear your customer horror stories and how you dealt with them.

Today, we’re going to talk about dealing with angry customers! We’re going to have stories, tips, strategies in dealing with them.

Dealing with Angry Customers: The Three Things I’ve learned.

1.) Start developing a sense of emotional intelligence.

Emotional intelligence: Notice that gut wrenching feeling in your stomach, take a breath, and just keep going.

Understand why this person is acting the way that they do. 9/10 people are acting from an instinct of FEAR. Not hate for you. These people don’t hate you...they are just afraid that their situation isn’t going to work out.

2.) Reframe the conversation into a problem-solving session.

Remember: it is so important to stay objective in these situations. You need to remove that emotional feeling as much as possible and get past that barrier no matter what. The easiest way to do this is to think of it like a puzzle you are trying to solve. This will make you more curious about the root of the problem--which would better help you solve it, and not let your emotions cloud your judgement. And the quicker you can get them to cooperate and go into the same problem solving mode -- the better!

What this also will do is give you a sense of confidence that you wouldn’t otherwise have if you were taking it personally. This confidence is incredibly important when you’re dealing with customers because if you are just going to take the weak position, people aren’t going to trust you to solve their problem.

3.) L.A.S.T.

I am a personal fan of the last technique. I’ve even heard of the BLAST technique, which I’ll tell you about after the LAST technique:

  • Listen
  • Apologize
  • Solve
  • Thank

B. is for Believe...

Tips and techniques to add on top of that: use their name and smile when on the phone with this person.

02 May 2019#41) Doing What You Want vs. What Society Expects | Cloud Nine Living with Jordan Gross00:52:02

Check out Jordan Gross & Cloud Nine Living at https://www.journeytocloudnine.com/

Welcome to the 41st episode of the Let’s Eat, Grandma Career Warrior Podcast! We are going to talk about how to do what you want to do not what society expects you to do.

I are going to take you on an adventure today with my friend and author-expert, Jordan Gross:

  • He’s a best-selling author of the book, Getting COMFY: Your Morning Guide to Daily Happiness (which was the theme of our 17th podcast).
  • He’s founded 3 different startups and helped many professionals to improve their careers including employees at Google and Amazon.
  • And another amazing fact: he’s a TedX speaker.

Here’s the thing: here’s why I’m bringing Jordan on today. He’s coming out with a new book called The Journey to Cloud Nine: which is all about the protagonist’s journey about doing what you want to do --- not what society tells you to do. The book discusses what life could be when you choose your path -- not someone else’s expectation of your path.

Topic Material for this episode:

  • What is Cloud 9 Living?
  • Why do people choose to go the route of choosing career paths that are safe or pre-approved by society or family members?
  • How should we define success in our careers? (Contrast this with how most people define success in their careers).
  • Let’s talk about how we can avoid the pitfall of choosing career paths based on societal pressure.
  • Timing: When is the right time to pursue that Cloud 9 Moment?

Today, we’re going to discuss the most underrated career advice ever -- and that’s communicating with confidence. So many of us are focusing on the words that we say in communication -- whether that be an interview, negotiation, or just an everyday conversation with your boss.

But what many of us forget is the way we deliver those words.

  • Does our body match what we are trying to say?
  • Do we appear unsure of what we are trying to say?
  • Do we appear confident?

We are going to cover it all with two amazing experts within the world of corporate communication.

With 45+ years of combined experience, Jennifer Rock and Michael Voss are the founders of Rock Dot Voss, a communications agency that helps companies and C-level executives to produce results.

  • Clients claim Jennifer Rock is: "Calm and organized even in absolute chaos." And previously, Jennifer led Employee Communications teams and programs at Best Buy.
  • Clients call Michael Voss: "Every exec's trusted collaborator,” and Michael also worked for Best Buy as Senior Director of Employee Communication.

Here's what we cover:

Setting the Stage:

  • Let’s talk about where this advice is going to be applicable. Does this type of communication matter apply to 1-on-1 situations?
  • Why is body language so important?

Heart of the Content:

Some areas of nonverbal communication that we cover:

  • Tone of Voice
  • Body Language
  • Gestures
  • Eye Contact
  • Crutch Words

16 May 2019#43) Quitting Your Job to Start Your Own Business: Worth It? | The Startup Life with Michael Testa00:56:20

We are going to discuss entrepreneurship -- and specifically the idea of quitting your job to start your own business.

  • Maybe the idea of starting your own business excites you.
  • Maybe you’re about to make that leap of faith right now.
  • Maybe you’ve been in it for a while, and you’re not sure if you should keep going.

Today, we’re going to discuss some of the best considerations for anyone who wants to call this journey their own. We’re going to talk about what entrepreneurship is really like, who it’s wrong for, and if you stick around until the end...you’re going to hear some great stories, including some highs and lows in pursuing this journey for the last 5 years.

I brought on Michael Testa, a friend of mine who is similar to me in many ways. Michael quit his high-paying job to pursue his dream of starting his own business. His background previously included leading technology initiatives for various Fortune 500 companies. He now works alongside me at Capital Factory, the tech hub for entrepreneurs, where he’s been putting in hustle to launch Eat Cheap, which is building the biggest library of food and drink deals in the nation.

The Entrepreneur’s Journey: Here's what we cover:

  • Who is entrepreneurship right for and who is it wrong for?
  • What did you give up when you decide to start your own business? What do you feel like you get in return for choosing this path?
  • Let’s talk about what people will think about you when you choose this path.
  • Both Michael and I answer: what has been the highest high, and what has been the lowest low of our journey so far?
  • Work life balance : still relevant? If so, what’s that look like?

23 May 2019#44) Conquer Your Fears of Rejection in 30 Days | Alex Grodnik of Moving Up Podcast00:28:58

Today, we’re going to punch fear in the mouth by discussing rejection therapy and what it can do for you. I know so many of us -- including myself -- limit our own potential by not going to what we want. Or worse, we don’t go for what we should be going after.

  • Maybe there is a job you want to go for, and it’s a stretch for you.
  • Maybe you believe it’s time for a promotion, but you’re scared to ask your boss.
  • Maybe your co-worker is the hottest thing on the planet and you’re afraid things are gonna get awkward real quick once they say no.

Well, dealing with rejection is a muscle, and today we’re taking you to the gym.

I brought on Alex Grodnik, a true Career Warrior, and we’re going to talk about the concept of rejection therapy. Alex is the Co-Founder of Payclub and the Founder of Grod Media, which hosts the Moving Up Podcast.

So let’s talk about rejection therapy because this can really take you up a notch in life!

Questions we address:

  • Who’s Alex Grodnik?
  • First of all: Why are so many people afraid of rejection?
  • What’s rejection therapy used for? Why is it so useful?
  • What’s the key outcome I should be moving toward?
  • Let’s talk about how we can practically use rejection therapy in our lives. How would I tell that listener to use rejection therapy as a tool in their job search -- or even to make them more of a warrior?
  • What are some other applications I can use this tool for?
  • Alex, if you could give one piece of advice to every job seeker on what they should do to be successful -- what would that be?

EMAIL US your best rejection stories from this challenge to projects@letseatgrandma.com

During our last episode, we covered the idea of facing rejection and exposing ourselves to it more constantly, which makes us stronger. But did you know that you can make a game out of it? This episode, I decided to go out in the field to win 5 rejections by asking for somewhat ridiculous things.

Some of my favorites:

  • "Can I have a discount?"
  • "Can I try on your ear pods?"
  • "Can you sing a song for me?"

You will see in this episode how playing such a game can help you out in the "real world" where you need to ask for more important things (e.g. promotions).

We hope you enjoy this episode, and I'll see you next time!

27 Jun 2019#49) Resume Tips for College Students & Recent Graduates 00:14:36

It’s that time of year. College students are graduating so I was inspired to create this episode for you up and coming career warriors who are out to get that first serious job.

  • Maybe you’re just graduating now and are in panic mode because you don’t have a job yet.
  • Maybe you’re entering in your final year of college and now is the time for you to start thinking about getting that package together.
  • Or maybe you are just that proactive that you just want a mean lean resume machine.

Well listen up! Now’s the time to turn your volume up and hear my best three tips for you as a college student. As the founder of Let’s Eat, Grandma a resume writing company I’ve learned some solid best practices that can get college students noticed and eventually hired.

The year was 2013; it was my senior year at University and it seemed like all my friends were talking about was their job search. Whether it was an interview my friend had at Goldman-Sachs or how many resumes my colleagues were shooting out. Does my GPA matter? What kind of job should I actually apply for? All these thoughts were racing through my head as I wondered what would be in store for me next year.

Here are three questions I wish my 2013 self had the answers to:

#1) What happens when you don’t have the experience, but it seems like every posting is calling for experience?

#2) What's the best formatting for my college resume? How long should it be? And the big mistake that a lot of college students make...

#3) How relevant does my job have to be to my field of study?

We address these questions in the episode (and even more in our 48th episode).

Thank you for your loyalty and support so far. Please leave us a rating on iTunes if you feel inclined to do so!

18 Jul 2019#54) Learn How to Stop Procrastinating | Get More Done00:23:13

Today, we are going to punch procrastination in the face and get more stuff done.

Why would you want to listen to this episode?

  • You need to get some big projects done.
  • You’re just getting started on making some behavior changes in your life - or changes in your routine.
  • You need to confront your fears about communicating something (e.g. ask for a promotion).

What I am about to discuss with you today has come from many other authors and experts who have helped me in my journey.

Setting the Context

  • Why do we procrastinate? Newton’s First Law of Motion and the perfectionist standard.

Four Things We Can Do to Stop Procrastinating:

  1. Focus. In How Memory Works, memory expert Robert Madigan discusses the principle of how we can pay better attention. And since attention is directly related to our productivity, I thought this was a perfect example. Start with asking yourself why you’re procrastinating. Also, knowing why you are doing the task will keep your energy high. (What is possible if I achieve my goal? Why do I want this?)
  2. The principle of “Just One Step.” Just focus on taking the first step. Decide for yourself if it’s going to be the hardest or easiest step.
  3. Chunking aka the Chris method. I’ve heard this from coaches online and published authors who have a tough time writing content. (Yes - even they get writing blocks). Let your drafts be drafty. Let your work be crappy at first. Then revise, revise, revise.
  4. Accountability. You want to find a way to make sure you actually get this done and do it according to a deadline? Get someone else involved.

25 Jul 2019#56) Become a Social Media Warrior | Engagement, Personal Brand, and Your Career00:26:57

Today we have an episode all about social media. Social media is becoming increasingly more important to stay relevant -- and to get the best opportunities for your career. The principles discussed in this podcast not only apply to LinkedIn, but also Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and anything else that means engaging with followers, friends, and connections.

The name of the game is going to be engagement and getting conversations flowing in the right way to help you in your professional life. And this is what we are going to discuss today.

I brought on the legendary Sean Page -- a good friend of mine who I have admired for a long time in this space. Out of all the people I know, Sean is the most active and has used his social media presence to build a great brand and get some solid engagement. Sean is unique because he has been a top resume writer for Let’s Eat, Grandma for several years -- and is now in charge of hiring the talent for our company. He has used and will continue to use social media as a tool to get engaged with the right people in the professional world.

Here's what we address:

Why should someone use social media in their professional lives? What’s the point?

What’s the biggest mistake that people make on social media?

Let’s talk about engagement and getting the right people to engage with you. What are some Sean-endorsed teachings in the area of engagement?

Let’s talk about the principle of personal brand. People may be in many stages of getting their personal brand down. They may not know how to communicate themselves in the online world. How can people get their personal brand in social media form?

We’re going to be covering some eating fundamentals during this podcast--what you should CUT OUT, ADD in, and supplement if you want to feel better at work. I’m going to do my best to make it practical, because I know how incredibly hard it is to stay on the wagon.

  • Increase EPA / DHA intake by eating food high in omega 3 (salmon)
  • Cut down alcohol + caffeine intake (likely no more than 2 drinks per day).

29 Aug 2019#66) Volunteer Experience as a Gateway to Landing Jobs00:16:46

Today, we are talking about volunteer experience as a gateway to landing your dream job! Yes, we are going to talk about the idea of free work. It is such a powerful principle and one of the best ways to open doors that were not there in the first place.

Here's what we cover:

Part 1: Why you should volunteer for jobs and how it can benefit you.

  • Getting experience: Just because it’s unpaid experience doesn’t mean that the experience itself isn’t as valuable as experience if it were paid. You’re still learning the skillset and doing what you want to do.
  • Opportunities to Move Your Life Forward with Paid Jobs: Oftentimes, it’s a matter of proving yourself, connecting with people, and you’ll eventually meet the right person to get you in a position.

Part 2: Communicating your experience on a resume and within networking opportunities

  • Resumes Resumes are flexible documents. It’s key to talk about the ordering of the experience here. Just ask yourself: how much would you rather them read the volunteer experience than the other stuff?
  • LinkedIn Profiles Make sure you have experiences listed on your LI profile. The beauty about LI is that you can often link the company with all the employees that have that experience.
  • Communicate Internally to the places you’re volunteering for See what people in that organization have had professional experience within that field. Set up a meeting with them to ask how they broke into their particular field.

Resources / Call to Action Mentioned in the Show:

Today, we are going to talk about what employers and recruiters hate seeing on resumes. As a disclaimer, please realize that resumes are a subjective thing. We are basing this off of best practices that Let’s Eat, Grandma puts into place.

Here's what we address with solutions:

  1. Unclear / untargeted resume content
  2. Typos
  3. Inconsistency on resumes vs. LinkedIn.

23 Sep 2019#73) LinkedIn: 3 Ways to More Meaningful Engagement!00:26:20

Connect with Chris on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris-villanueva-cprw

Today we are going to discuss how to use LinkedIn to drive more meaningful engagement on this platform. The truth is that most people are not doing a good job with driving meaningful engagement! LinkedIn users often treat LinkedIn as a fad-diet, go all in, and give a very sporadic effort. They may use the "shotgun approach" and are not targeted...Or they may use it for a completely self-serving purpose (i.e. not offering value for others).

Therefore, we teach you how to do this the right way:

The 3 principles we discuss are:

  • Posting relevant content for your industry, role, and purpose
  • Commenting on other posts to engage with people outside your network
  • Connecting with the right people

Here's what we cover:

Let’s talk about “following your heart.”

  • Where did this idea come from?
  • Why is it not such an easy answer?
  • What should people do instead to gain clarity in their lives?

Let's get practical and discuss how to manifest yourself into the right positions (i.e. networking)

  • What is the best way to actually pick and choose what jobs to apply for?
  • What is the best way to meet the right people?
  • What’s my action plan?

10 Oct 2019#78) Are You Taking Enough Action to Succeed?00:26:09

Today, we're talking all about your ACTION plan to accomplish the goals you want to nail. Because it's not just about self-improvement. It takes action to propel your life forward, and tha'ts what we cover today.

Summary of the Steps Mentioned in The Episode:

#1) Set your goals first.

This is for your own motivation and clarity. Don’t just make it outcome dependent, get one growth factor in there (one is way more in your control and rewarding in the long run).

#2) Create your action plan.

What do you think is going to work for you? Search your heart first and don’t necessary go with what books tell you to do. You’re much more likely to stick with this.

The more actionable you can make your action plan the better. Use the invasive power of technology to get into your life.

  • If your eyeballs are always on your calendar, get recurring calendar events on that calendar so you know it’s time for you to take action.
  • If you spend a lot of time in your commute, take that time to review your upcoming calendar.
  • If you’re always on your iPhone, get the Counter App to count how many times a week you do something. (This has been really effective for me).

#3) Take ACTION and make progress on your action plan.

  • Remember: Ready, Fire, Aim is a much better strategy than ready, aim for a long time, and then kind of fire.
  • Set your plan and take action. For that first month of consistent action, don’t deviate. Hit your action based quotas every single time, just to see what happens.
  • Support systems and accountability can help - people who share common goals, your team, your tribe.
  • Your reset and reassess button is when? A month from now?
  • Are you burning out? Is it too much?
  • Are you not getting anywhere? Or are you focusing on the wrong thing?
  • Are you attracting the wrong people?
  • FINE. NOW you actually know!

A note on setbacks, discouragement, lack of results. There is no failing if you focus on the self-improvement aspect.

#4) Be at Peace. You’re never going to be fully satisfied alone. So stop obsessing over the outcome alone and look at the big picture. Find peace.

14 Oct 2019#79) Leah Kingsbury: New Mom in a New City | Putting Yourself Out There For the Win | Making Friends Online 00:32:37

We spoke with Leah Kingsbury about the challenges of applying for jobs as a new mom -- and how to make friends online. Today's theme is putting yourself out there and meeting the right people to orchestrate your dream life. How about that?

  • Did you just move to a new city?
  • Is your life going through a period of intense transition?
  • Maybe you’re a new mother who is just returning back to the workforce after your entire life has been uprooted by the birth of a child.

My next guest, Leah Kingsbury, is a single mom here in Austin who has really nailed this “putting yourself out there” thing. I met Leah when I was her Uber driver -- back in 2017 when I was using rideshare to supplement my income. I instantly noticed something about Leah when I met her. She was magnetic, kind, social, and had just got done meeting up with a brand new friend-- someone she had just met on online! My mind was blown. She was doing everything that I wanted to as a new Austinite - but never had the time or courage to do.

And with nearly 13 thousand Instagram followers, she has her own tribe of warriors who are bought in to her message, resilience, and unwavering positivity. No matter if you’re a mom or not, you can benefit from hearing Leah speak her on this platform.

Here's what we cover:

  • What are some of the biggest challenges in reentering the workforce as a new mom?
  • Putting yourself out there: How do I take that first step to meeting people if I’m in a new city?
  • What are some good practical strategies for meeting people online? How can we play it safe when online?
  • How do you combat our protective egos who don't want to stretch outside our comfort zones?
  • How have you internally dealt with adversity as someone who puts themselves out there?

14 Nov 2019#88) Everyone is Fighting Their Own Battle00:12:27

Today, we took a little bit of a different turn (although a very important one). Everyone is going through something whether or not you see it or not, and if you're deep in your job search, you really need to listen to this message.

Reasons we did this episode:

  • To remove the focus from ourselves for one second. How often do you think about yourself...the fact that your job may suck?...the fact that you don’t have your dream job yet?... you, you, you. It can be stressful, and it’s not actually good for us. This removes that centralized focus and yields a more healthy attitude.
  • To foster more patience in yourself and with other people. It is so important to be patient especially in the tough times.

EMPATHY. Get some! Hope you enjoy.

Today, we’re going to talk about confidence in the face of challenge and uncertainty. We will also cover a powerful mentality to have when it comes to networking: connecting with others without expecting anything in return.

Why you will want to listen to this episode:

  • Maybe you feel like rejection has gotten the better of you.
  • You lack confidence, clarity, and presence in your job search.

19 Dec 2019#98) Relentless Positivity as a Gamechanger in Your Job Search00:23:11

I hate when people simply say to be positive, but this is one of the most powerful things you can do to improve your life. I try and tackle this issue the right way by drawing from faith, science, and my own experiences.

At the end of the day, if you are living your days in positive expectation, you’ll be able to actually persist enough to achieve difficult outcomes (eg land a solid job through career change). If you dwell on the negative, you will slow down unnecessarily. It’s that simple.

The episode will cover why it’s important to be positive as well as how to shift your mindset from constant negativity to positive expectation.

30 Dec 2019#101) What Will You Accomplish in 2020? 00:16:42

Today, we’re going to help you think through your goals for next year -- and we’re going to increase the likelihood of you actually following through by integrating S.M.A.R.T goals.

Ask Yourself Why:

Pick one goal you have in mind. Ask why you want to accomplish this goal.

  • What’s the main reason you want to accomplish your goal.
  • Is it to impress someone else?
  • Is it because you’ve always had this goal?
  • How good would you feel if you were to accomplish that goal?
  • What will you be able to accomplish if you finish that goal?

Set Your SMART Goals:

SMART is an acronym that stands for...

Specific - A major reason why New Year's resolutions fail are that you aren’t specific enough. Creating specific goals does something psychologically that sets you up for success.

Measurable - The more quantifiable the better. Weight is a good example because you can step on the scale and have a number.

Attainable - Make sure you are positioned with the tools required to nail your goal. If you don’t have them, go get them. Also, be sure to be realistic.

Relevant - Why is this relevant in the context of the bigger picture of your life?

Time-Bound - Put a specific time frame on your goal. (Also, don’t be too short-term. This is one of the reasons why people give up. Give it a year’s time with quarterly check points.)

Today, we’re going to talk about the concept of …start, stop, continue. Start, stop, continue is a transformative brainblast exercise that looks to your past so you can build the ideal version of your life. You look at what things you should start, what you should stop, and what you should continue. I’m going to break down how you should do each of these and show you how you can come up with your own start, stop, continue.

Start, stop, continue is also a powerful exercise done by corporate executives to build strategy for their companies. This is something that our company at Let’s Eat, Grandma  has been doing every quarter, and it’s helped us out big time. It’s given us self awareness and true focus on what to work on. I think it can be an even more effective tool when applied on a personal level.

Sign up for our New Year, New Job 6-email-series: https://mailchi.mp/letseatgrandma/new-year-new-job

Today, we’re going to talk about rebranding yourself for your career and your job search.

Our guest, Kanika Tolver, is a career coach and author of the book, Career Rehab: Rebuild Your Personal Brand and Rethink the Way You Work. In Career Rehab, Tolver helps readers strip away what's holding them back to create the career of their dreams. Readers learn how to create an online brand presence, market an authentic personal brand, and sell their brand-offering expertise and skills.

She has been featured on CNN, CBS Radio, Glassdoor, Entrepreneur, the Washington Post and in a variety of radio interviews and podcasts.

Here's what we cover:

  • Let’s talk about what rebranding actually is. What would this look like in the context of someone’s career?
  • Getting clear on what you want next:
  • How can I build my career floorplan? (Salary, skills matching, ideal location, where you want to live).
  • Career Rooms and Spaces: (Company type, company culture)
  • Career Appliances: What are the incentives that you want? Paid time off? Remote opportunities?
  • The emotional part: How can we deal with stress and anxiety during this time of intense transition?
  • What are ways that I can ensure that companies take me seriously (as a career transitioner) during the application stages?

09 Jan 2020#104) Explaining a Gap Year or Travel on a Resume | Just Ask Chris00:11:29

Today, we’re going to have a short minisode about how to explain a gap year or time taken off for travel on your resume. I’ll discuss some helpful tips to frame your experience positively so you can get the job you want.

Here's what we cover:

Ask yourself: how necessary is it to call out that travel you’ve done?

  • Look at timing: (You just traveled...vs 5 years ago).
  • Look at job relevance:  How relevant is it for the specific job you’re applying for?

If you make the decision to showcase travel in the resume:

  • Create a separate section for it.
  • REALLY IMPORTANT: You want to make sure that you only include relevant information for that job.
  • Get clear on where you’re applying.
  • Brainstorm all of the professional skills that you acquired. Common themes include: languages, problem solving, communication skills.
  • When in doubt, keep it short.

Cover letters and interviews are the best for selling this type of experience.

16 Jan 2020#106) Step Up to the Plate and Face Your Challenge | Jordan Hearin's Story00:23:03

Today, we’re going to talk about challenge and carving your own path to career success. My next guest, Jordan Hearin overcame extreme poverty, multiple evictions, and was raised in a childhood where both parents were addicted to drugs...all so he could eventually carve his own path to career success as a successful technology executive.

It blows my mind what us humans are capable of doing with the right amount of vision and persistence. This conversation was originally intended for a new podcast to be released in late January, which fights homelessness. The section I’ve chosen today will hone in on Jordan’s story and some common themes that will help you to push forward in your job search as well.

Thanks for tuning in, and I hope you enjoy this Thursday’s episode.
