07 Feb 20221.24 Harvesting History - Alison Milne & Simon Thompson on how the future of Scotch might lie in its past00:57:33

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how farmers, malsters, brewers and distillers are finding new inspiration and flavours from crops that had previously died out.

Will and Foxy talk to Alison Milne, a 6th generation farmer and maltster from Scotland who has created her own family malting business, Crafty Maltsers. Ali has taken on the challenge of growing and malting heritage varieties of barley for brewing and distilling because it offers a chance to differentiate from products that are created with only efficiency in mind as novel flavours and characteristics are revealed. To best explain how those flavours and characteristics come through, Simon Thompson and his team from Dornoch Distillery join us and reveal exactly why it's worth all the effort.

For our Desert Island Drink we speak to Christine Parkinson of the Alcohol Free Sommelier podcast about the state of alcohol free wine and how the best options are not necessarily alcohol free wines(?!)

Plus we talk rugby, pints and Foxy makes the worst joke of his tenure so far...

14 Feb 2022A Shot Of... Round #21 (our short silly quiz!)00:10:19

Send us a text

Which beverage is created by heating skimmed milk and glucose? Which drink was thought to be satanic until Pope Clement VIII declared it otherwise?

As you'll hopefully have gathered by now, the Business of Beverages brings you drinks industry insights with makers, marketers and mischief every fortnight. However we thought that we would dial up the mischief with a short quiz/game played between Will and Foxy every other week (between the "serious" episodes).

A Shot Of... sees each of our hosts take turns trying to guess which beverage is being described in cryptic clues. The points on offer vary as the difficulty changes and competition heats up!  Play along and let us know if you think you can do better! And remember, it's only a bit of craic.

I stand corrected - somebody does read the shownotes (thanks Chris!). We'd still appreciate a review or just drop us a line to let us know what you think of the podcast. We'd love to hear from you. Or just buy us a coffee... or all three! Thanks.

21 Feb 20221.25 "The Indiana Jones of Spirits" - Rebecca Jago talks about curating and creating the worlds most remarkable spirits.00:52:08

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how the rarest, most expensive spirits in the world are discovered by one small family company dedicated to honouring and evolving the vision of two legendary founders.

Will and Foxy talk to Rebecca Jago, MD of The Last Drop Distillers, "Curators of the most remarkable spirits in the world". Rebecca reveals how the company was founded by her father Tom and his friend James after they had retired from a lifetime of building  global brands for other companies such as Diageo, Moet Hennessey and Pernod Ricard. What started out as an adventure for two old men has become an exceptional company which fills a niche that nobody else had identified.

For our Desert Island Drink we speak to Marty Duffy, from Glencairn Crystal, makers of the most famous whisk(e)y glass in the world, a familiar sight to anyone who has ever conducted serious tastings for spirits or stood around a trade show, hoping for a free sample from a Whiskey stand. Marty makes us laugh out loud with his selection and if you have never seen the drink he mentions, click here.

Plus we talk our upcoming trip to Leuven, dolphins and make plans to taste some remarkable spirits. Email us at bizbevpod@gmail.com for more details.

Back to the episode... In this episode you'll learn how the glass you choose for your drink can make a world of difference to you and your customer's experience. We get practical advice on designing, branding and storing glassware for spirits, wines and beers.

Will and Foxy talk to Marty Duffy, from Glencairn Crystal, makers of the most famous whisk(e)y glass in the world. With decades of experience in the world of whiskies and cocktails Marty now lends his expertise to the wold of premium glassware. We learn how the shape of your glass can affect the appearance, aroma and taste of your drink and how it can work wonders for your brand. We describe our favourite glasses and recount stories of how and  why we make our choices. We also mention the wine glass company Riedel if you want to get some visuals for what we're discussing.

For our Desert Island Drink we are privileged to speak to Mirco Wolf Wiegert founder of Fritz Kola. Mirco and his co founder were students hanging out in a dorm in Hamburg in 2002 when they struck upon the idea of waking up the CSD monopoly with their own creation. In one of the most remarkable underdog successes of the 21st century, Fritz Kola is now a major European CSD company, with over 300 employees in Central Europe and showing "Big Red" exactly how to grow an edgy, authentic and truly purposeful brand.

Plus we Foxy shocks the entire world by recommending that you drink your Guinness from a wine glass, whilst Will get's sentimental about his Granny's "good room".

21 Mar 2022BizBevPod's First Anniversary Special - A celebration of one year of curiosity & creativity00:59:29

Come to Belgium with us! We're hosting a 2 day BizBevPod Live in Leuven event all about Belgian Beer on May 25th -27th with: live interviews with world class industry guests, exclusive brewery tours, beer pairings, brasserie visits, panel discussions and networking events. Back to the episode... In this episode you'll learn how Will and Foxy have, born out of humour & heartache, created one of the world's most successful Drinks Industry Podcasts in just one year.

At the suggestion of one of our guests we have decided to celebrate our official anniversary of the launch of the podcast with a reflection on how we got here and where we are going. We always focus our episodes on our guests and their experiences, stories and insights, whist chiming in with our own views and opinions but for a whole episode we talk solely about our favour subject... ourselves! We give a little bit of background into our shared history and what engendered the spark of curiosity that led to us starting BizBevPod. More importantly we discuss the hopes we have for the future of the podcast and how YOU can be part of them! It's a wide ranging conversation that features Will's love of Microsoft Excel, Foxy's random Boston GAA stories and a genuine affection and friendship that is framed through our shared love of drinks.

For our Desert Island Drink we also break all the rules and feature a tasting "on the island" with our in person special guest, Joe McGrath. Joe is our sound engineer and owner of the fantastic Hellfire Studios where we record the podcast. Not only that he is a keen whiskey enthusiast and when we received a special package of spirits to taste, we could think of nobody better to share them with than Joe.

It's a very different episode and we hope you enjoy the break from the norm!

Back to the episode... In this episode you'll learn how two students in Hamburg took on the biggest beverage monopoly in history with nothing more than €7,000, a second hand van and bags of attitude. fritz kola is now the second biggest soft drink company in Central Europe and over 300 "fritzies" are spreading it father afield.

Will and Foxy talk to Mirco Wolf Wiegert founder of Fritz Kola. Mirco and his co founder were students hanging out in a dorm in Hamburg in 2002 when they struck upon the idea of waking up the CSD monopoly with their own creation. In one of the most remarkable underdog successes of the 21st century, Fritz Kola is now a major European CSD company showing "Big Red" exactly how to grow an edgy, authentic and truly purposeful brand.

Our visit to our Desert Island sees  Karen O'Neill choosing her favourite drink. Her choice isn't any surprise considering how much she loves Beekon Batches, the unique "honey refresher" that she created.  Karen shares her roller coaster journey as a founder and talks about how the big consumer trends that have driven the growth of Hard Seltzer are perfectly served by her entirely natural concoction.

PS sorry about the sound quality on Will's mic for the Mirco interview.

Will  talks to Georgie Bell, the Global Head of Advocacy for incubation Brands at Bacardi. Despite being an industry veteran with nearly 15 years experience and memberships of the most exclusive industry bodies, Georgie is still retains an outsider's perspective, enabling her to better advise and agitate for change in an industry that can be seen as "stale, male and pale".

Our visit to our Desert Island sees  Ben Branson, the founder of Seedlip, make a pretty left-field choice that will bring home comforts, if not tropical tastes, to the island.

No only that but we talk about Foxy's shirking of BizBevPod responsibilities, wedding ceremonies and the worst cocktail Will has ever ordered.

Specifically Ben describes the difficulties in persuading retailers to categorise and fixturise the emerging non alc category correctly and the temptation to devalue the category through cutting margin and prices too quickly. No only that but we talk about Foxy's return to the Beer Festival circuit and Will's understanding of the theory of Effectuation.

30 May 2022Fighting for Beer - (Live in Leuven I) John Brauer explains how the political, economic & technical future of beer is being played out in Europe00:46:02

Send us a text

In this special live episode you'll learn how the Brewers of Europe organisation is fighting for Beer's place at the European table as it lobbies, researches and represents on behalf of all brewers.

Recorded in the historic Irish College in Leuven, Belgium, in front of a large audience of Business of Beverages listeners, Will and special guest co-host, Susan Boyle talk with John Brauer, Executive Officer with the Brewers of Europe. John is uniquely placed to talk about the massive challenges that beer faces from a regulatory point of view but also the opportunities that new brewing techniques and categories provide. John is frank about the advantages and disadvantages that organisations like the Brewers of Europe face as they represent large and small brewers whose priorities may clash in the short term but align in the long term.

Please note that this is the first in a series of episodes that were recorded Live in Leuven as part of the first Business of Beverages roadshow which included, brewery tours, beer pairing dinners, brasserie visits and technical talks amongst other amazing adventures in the Beer Capital of Europe. 10 Jul 2022Beeronomics - Local Lessons & International Implications00:57:11

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn what is really happening in the Beer Industry in Ireland, Europe and around the world and, more importantly what the lessons and implications are for brewers, publicans and businesses.

We're on a roll... another live episode! This time we were invited to the 7th Beeronomics Conference at Trinity College Dublin to host a special round table discussion on the Beer Industry in Ireland. The audience of International Beer scholars, economists and academics had travelled from all over the world to discuss every aspect of the economics of beer from the historical to the hypothetical. Will took them out of their academic ivory towers and introduced them to some of the leading figures from the industry in Ireland who have real life experiences from the macro to the micro. Jonathan McDade is the Director of Drinks Ireland Beer, Noel Anderson is the Managing Director of a small but highly successful group of pubs in Dublin and John Kelly is the Strategic Director of Beverages for Kerry Group. They give honest, informed and hilarious insights into the real business of beer.

25 Jul 2022Drinking in the Metaverse?! - Ben Finnegan & Alex Gibson on how tech, alcohol & marketing are colliding00:54:16

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how the rapid progression of cutting edge technology is changing how people socialise and therefore how, what, where and when they drink.

Will and Foxy have plenty of opinions on this topic as they reflect on the "constant change" in our interactions with tech and drink, from the historical to the next wave. But to get a better informed perspective we share a discussion that Will was part of for the Persuaders Media & Marketing radio programme on Dublin City FM recently. There Alex Gibson (TU Dublin Head of Digital Marketing) and Ben Finnegan (Head of eSports and Gaming at EPIC Global & host of TBD podcast) help tease out the issues that range from the frivolous to the fundamental for our industry.

On our first visit back to our desert island in a couple of months, we talk to Dhavall Gandhi  a Whiskey Master Blender whose talent is only matched by his determination to follow his dreams and carve out a career in an "uber-niche" pursuit.

Lester Jones is the Chief Economist and VP of Analytics at the National Beer Wholesalers Association in the USA. With a deep love of beer, an astute economic mind and access to an unrivalled network of data, Lester is the foremost expert on the state of the beer market in the US. Recent years have seen the plateauing of Craft, the bedding in of the AB InBev mega merger and the boom /bust (?) of Hard Seltzer. On top of the impact of the pandemic, these events have led many to question the pre-eminence of Beer. Inflation and supply constraints are increasing short term concerns too but Lester has the insight into the real state of play. It's not all doom and gloom...

19 Sep 2022Whisky's House of Cards? - A world exclusive with Duncan & Pete from Woven on the dangerous game being played between distillers and speculators00:59:59

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how the undervalued art of whisky blending is being given new life by a young team based in Edinburgh but with international ambitions. However despite the seeming rude health of the category they sound the alarm over the ever escalating speculative frenzy between flippers, fraudsters and brands who are fulling the fire.

Host Will Keating sits down for an exclusive and in depth interview with Pete Allison and Duncan McRae from Woven Whisky. They are bringing an independent and conceptual take on the traditional art of blending with stunning success in their first year in business. However despite the positive momentum in almost all  sectors of the industry, they are cautious about some of the hype that is bringing short term gains for some in Whisky but at the cost of long term stability and growth. We get int the nitty gritty but there is a positive story there in the end and a world exclusive on their plans for a future beyond Scotch.

On our usual Desert Island Drink slot, we talk to a man with the broadest set of interests that we have encountered in the industry, Jamie Ryder. Jamie talks to us about sake, stoicism and Substack! Read his Drink to That newsletter or Yamato Magazine

Send us a text

In this episode you'll be treated to an outstanding overview of a category that is both familiar and exotic, Sake.

The most Japanese of all drinks has hit the headlines around the world as growing exports but falling consumption at home have caused issues for brewers and the taxman alike. Luckily Kyoko Nagano  of Sake Lovers Inc. was available to help guide Will through the very basics of how Sake is made, what makes it unique, how the traditional brewers are being challenged by changing tastes and demographics but also the new opportunities that are being developed for this most ancient of drinks.

For the Desert Island Drink, John Kelly returns to the pod yet again, giving us a short and sweet view of his go to drink if he was all alone and in need of some comfort.

We also discuss Foxy's first impressions of Kazakhstan (really), his (hazy) memories of drinking Sake in Toyko and Will's coffee confusion.

01 Nov 2022Disreputable Exchange - Prof. André Sammartino on the controversial obfuscations of Micro & Macro brewers.00:59:58

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how an academic approach to studying the Australian Craft Beer scene has given greater insights into how brewers large and small avoid transparency for short term gain but at the cost of long term credibility.

Will talks to Professor André Sammartino, from the University of Melbourne in Australia about the 12 "Golden Rules" for success in enterprise and how these apply to brewing and distilling businesses. But the conversation then takes a deep dive into the questionable practices of micro and macro brewers over the last 25 years in Australia as they sought to create their own myths in the pursuit of selling beer. The learnings are relevant all over the globe and far beyond the brewing industry.

In place of our regular Desert Island Drink slot, Foxy's first "Uncle Travelling Pat" slot (*Name TBC) dives deeper into his impressions of Kazakhstan and it's nascent drinking culture, unique hospitality and salty fermented milk beverages.

Plus we talk about Will's fancy dress philosophy, the origin of Pumpkin Beers and how Halloween is really Irish (like evrything else).

The brilliant beverage behemoth that is Dave Infante (Fingers NewsLetter & Vinepair) returns to the pod to catch us up on what the exactly is going on in the US right now as brewers and CPG conglomerates fight over the white space created by the plateauing of craft beer and the creation of new categories such as hard seltzer and hard energy.

28 Nov 2022Beyond the Beyond - Gráinne Gilsenan's lessons from decades of pushing NPD past category boundaries.00:54:45

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how to approach beverage innovation at a project and an organisational level from someone who's been at the cutting edge of global innovation management in Diageo, SAB Miller and Costa/Coca-Cola.

Gráinne Gilsenan began her career as an innovation brewer with Guinness and quickly realised that she wanted to write the NPD briefs, not just respond to them. Thereafter her path took her through global roles looking after "Beyond Beer" for SAB Miller and "Beyond Coffee" for Costa. She reflects on the key ingredients to brilliant innovation and NPD and how "killing your own ideas" is the real sign of success.

On our Desert Island Drink segment we have the closest thing to an NPD rock star as possible... Steve Grasse. The man who famously pitched the concepts for Hendrick's Gin and Sailor Jerry's rum in the same week. Steve is a marketing agency chief, distillery owner and author, amongst a host of other things. He talks beaver anus flavoured whiskey, the TTB and why we all misunderstand the Dunce Cap (really).

Will and Foxy also talk exploding TVs and the World Cup PR disaster for Budweiser.

09 Jan 2023What's Wrong With Wine? - Steve Rannekleiv helps us to see the bright side for a category that struggles with innovation00:59:26

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how a host of passionate and well informed experts battle Will's suspicion of Wine to convince him that there's innovation, excitement and, ultimately, hope for the category.

Will is a self confessed "wine sceptic", frustrated by his perception of the industry's slavish devotion to tradition and glacial pace of innovation. However, it's a new year so Will has resolved to educate himself in the company of some of the best Wine experts on the planet.

"Irish Wine writer of the Year™" Susan Boyle returns to BizBevPod to co-host in the enforced absence of Foxy and she brings her charm and deep category knowledge to bear on proceeding. Dividing her time between Dublin and Paris where her work includes writing, broadcasting and sampling (!) wines.

Our main interviewee, Steve Rannekleiv, is the Executive Director of Food & Agri-business Research at Rabobank, host of the Liquid Assets Podcast and general wine industry sage. Steve advises many of the biggest producers, exporters, importers and distributors of wine on the overall state of the category, the key trends and economic watch outs from across the globe. Who better to cast a dispassionate eye on the opportunities and challenges for the category?

On our Desert Island Drink slot we welcome the bubbly Elly Owen a Sommelier and Wine educator based in beautiful Cornwall. Elly wants to bring simple and carefree wines to people everywhere but will she stick to those principles if she can only choose one drink for the island?

Foxy will return, that's a threat, not a promise 😉

In this episode you'll learn how one distilling start up is doing everything different and yet their story is eerily familiar. We get to the bottom of things!

Will and Foxy talk to Miika Salmi Lipiäinen one of the 5 brave co-founders of Kyrö Distillery Company who's naked ambition has seen them go from a sauna drinkers to serious distillers. Their rye based spirits from Nothern Finland have made quite the impression on markets around the world and, whilst their story is typical of so many craft brewers/distillers, the way they have achieved their success to date has seen them use all their available assets. (No more puns, we promise).

On our desert island Philip Duff, the globe trotting master of bar, brand and bon vivants, joins us to give us insights into a cocktail from yester year and why it is The Last Word in drinks as far as he's concerned.

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn what's happening on the ground in Philadelphia as our very own Pádraig Fox gives us a view on what the city of brotherly love has to offer the (not so) discerning drinker.

Foxy goes from co-host to guest again this week. He has previously reported on the drinking culture and trends in Kazakhstan but this time he's in the US of A, in a city new to him but familiar to many through film, TV and song. Foxy gives his views on how to navigate the 4 types of bar in Philly: Irish, Belgian, Celebrity and Dive. He also contrasts European and US drinks trends, remarks on the lack of St. Patricks Day themed Green Beer and ponders why It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia lied to him...

On our Desert Island, Ed Kentish Barnes, MD of Steiner Hops UK, makes best use of his experience as a Master Brewer, distiller and hop expert to choose a drink but his choice of vessel is as quirky as it is quintessentially English.

But the supply chain and energy crunch of recent years, together with chronic sustainability challenges are forcing hop breeders, farmers and brewers to become more innovative. 15 May 2023A Shot of... our short, silly quiz!00:12:35

Send us a text

Which drink was extinct till a recent(ish) revival? Which drink has a flavour that can be "preserved for over 20 years"?

As you'll hopefully have gathered by now, the Business of Beverages brings you drinks industry insights with makers, marketers and mischief every fortnight. However we thought that we would dial up the mischief with a short quiz/game played between Will and Foxy every other week (between the "serious" episodes).

A Shot Of... sees each of our hosts take turns trying to guess which beverage is being described in cryptic clues. The points on offer vary as the difficulty changes and competition heats up!  Play along and let us know if you think you can do better! And remember, it's only a bit of craic.

22 May 2023Sure Fire Hit? - Gary Lavin of Vit Hit on the ups and downs of sweetness, selling and sachets.00:59:03

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how perseverance as well as several failures in health and nutrition informed the eventual success of Vit Hit, one of the fastest growing international health drinks.

Vit Hit founder, Gary Lavin joins us to talk about the painstaking evolution of Vit Hit from an vague idea to international success via some setbacks. Gary's time as a professional rugby player gave him confidence, resilience and an interest in nutrition. He needed all of those in order to grow a fledgling health drink into an international player that has tackled bigger brands into touch.

On our Desert Island we welcome our old friend, Dan Ryan (well our friendship is old, he's not old!). Dan has done everything from selling spirits in Saigon to Draught in Dublin but he now is part of the most exciting thing happening in Tea. Yes, there is something exciting happening in Tea... Unilever is spinning off it's global brands to create one of the world's largest ever "start ups", Lipton Teas & Infusions.

19 Jun 2023The end of alcohol!? - David Orren says you can have all of the benefits of ethanol without ethanol00:57:54

Send us a text

A synthethic replacement for ethanol that has all of the benefits but none of the drawbacks seems like science fiction but David Orren from GABA Labs thinks they have cracked the code.

David is the MD and co-founder of GABA Labs, a potentially revolutionary start up that is aiming to produce a range of replacements for ethanol. These scientifically researched, but yet to be approved, ingredients could stimulate the same neuro-receptors in our brains as ethanol. According to David and his partner Prof. David Nutt, they could do it more accurately and they would be self limiting so over indulging would be impossible. But does the science stack up? How does it get FDA approval? And what sort of business model do you use when trying to disrupt one of humanities oldest industries?

The fantastic Susan Boyle co-hosts this episode as Foxy is on a well deserved holiday.

In this episode you'll learn how the entrepreneur's journey is so often determined by an element that they have little control over... luck.

Karen O'Neil was a guest on our desert island last year when the world was at the feet of her newly created "honey refresher", Beekon. She had been through her fair share of ups and down as a founder of a new to world start up but all the elements for success seemed to be lining up for Beekon to explode, metaphorically. Unfortunately  it exploded literally... We explore what led up to that moment, the consequences and the chink of light at the end of the tunnel.

We don't have a Desert Island guest today as Foxy had his hands full, as you'll hear in the background!

In the third of "Foxy's Tales", Padraig Fox gives us his stories and insights from a recent trip to Africa (& Portugal!). Coffee, beer, cocktails, you name it, he drank it. From craft brewery tap rooms (254) to swanky hotels, from airport concessions to street side bars, Foxy did the research so you don't have to! He tells stories of random encounters, lax security, "scheduled" riots and the one drink he'll never forget...

P.S. yes, that is Owen Wilson in the photo with Foxy. They met by chance in a bar in Kenya and Foxy forgot to tell the story in the interview!!! We'll save it for another time.

Jasmin Vollrath is a "conservative" German brewer with experience brewing every beer style imaginable but she's working with Alfa Laval on their "Revos" technology. This has the potential to revolutionise how beer is processed, transported and served. We couldn't help but get excited by the ways this could work.

We also talk about the Hagstragavanza beer festival, lighthouses and what teenagers really want from their parents...

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn why independent professional, unbiased journalism is vital to the long term health of the drinks industry.

With Foxy unavailable we jump straight into an interview with Maggie Kimberl. Maggie has been a professional critic and journalist covering spirits in general, and Bourbon in particular, for over a decade. The industry has boomed in that time but the dream job she once had is heading towards a nightmare. The twin challenges of declining media budgets and the increase of "influencers" peddling half truths for big bucks are making it harder and harder to make a living. Does it matter? Martin Purvis is a trans-national treasure trove of information and analysis of the spirits industry. From Manchester to Edinburgh to Kentucky, via Africa, Martin has been building expertise in how commodities drive commerce. Casks have become his focus over the last few decades and he has worked with William Grant and Kelvin Cooperage, amongst others. Martin explains how cask availability, quality and regulations are changing rapidly, resulting in testing times for distillers.

02 Dec 2024Who are you without your history? Eibhlin Colgan from Guinness & Carol Quinn from Jameson on the importance of the past, to the future.00:59:21

Send us a text

In this episode you'll learn how brands like Jameson and Guinness invest in their future by entrusting their past to Archivists.

It's exceptionally rare to get Diageo and Pernod Ricard to agree on anything (!) but the importance of brand archives is central to both Guinness and Irish Distillers. Eibhlin Colgan and Carol Quinn sat down in the Connoisseur Bar in the Guinness Storehouse to explain that a corporate archive is central to preserving and enhancing brand value. Archives can do so much, from providing insights for current marketing campaigns to informing CSR work to inspiring new product development with stories of previous successes/failures.
Carol and Eibhlin share stories and tales from the past but explain how even modern start ups need to be thinking about creating an archive if they are to build value into the future.

PS Don't use Sellotape to stick papers into records you are archiving, ask a professional!

It happened! A listener finally sent us in questions for our short, silly drinks quiz and we're thrilled. Firstly because somebody loves a beverage based quiz as much as we do, but secondly because we didn't have to do the research work ourselves for a change!

If you think you've got a good drink/set of clues, just drop us a text by clicking the link above, or find us on LinkedIn or X.
