There are certain questions you're going to get asked as a copywriter, around the holidays or otherwise. Make sure you're prepared with your responses to 5 of the most common questions friends and family are sure to ask!

In episode 3 of this 5-part series, we're navigating the well-meaning, but often inappropriately asked, "how much are ya even making?!" question.

Because so many other writing professions *don't* pay well, our friends and family are often worried that pursuing copywriting will put us in a similar position: struggling to pay the bills. But as you likely know, copywriters don't fall into this bucket.

Here's how to answer this question, whether you're comfortable telling your grandfather exactly what you're making, or you simply want to correct this bit of misinformation so many people have been taught to believe.

27 Oct 202150. Should I Put Copywriting Rates on My Website?00:26:00

Some copywriters will tell you putting prices on your website makes you more transparent. When phrased like that, it sounds like a no-brainer, right? However, as Nicki and Kate dig into in this episode, no two homepages or emails or any other project are 100% alike, so how can you put a price on your website if you don't even know what the project entails?

04 Dec 20201. What is Copywriting?00:47:46

The MOST exciting thing about copywriting in 2025?

All the opportunities.

Think about it: the 21st century alone has already brought so many new opportunities for copywriters:

  • The Internet—all of the Internet!!!—was largely just becoming mainstream at the start of the century. (For context, Amazon was started in 1995.)
  • Meta, still known as Facebook, didn't even get founded until 2004.
  • TikTok was founded in 2016.

All of this brought new mediums where copywriters are needed:

  • Online product descriptions
  • Banner ads
  • Email
  • Webpages
  • Social media ads

Not to mention there's still a ton of print, out of home, radio, and other mediums that need copywriters ... (CCA students, do NOT overlook these opportunities—so much of copywriting is still for offline mediums!)

So, as I write this in 2025, I couldn't be more excited for all the opportunities yet to come! Yes, even with AI.

AI is just another tool in the copywriter's toolkit. And, as copywriting has proven time and time again—through major cultural transitions and eras—it's absolutely needed.

Which, I don't know about you, but that level of staying power—and the continued need for trained copywriters over the centuries—is pretty darn exciting.

Kate and I *finally* recorded an update to answer the "what is copywriting" question for 2025.

And, spoiler, you'll notice that even though the world is changing (as it always does!), there are still some copywriting principles that just stand the test of time.

You don’t have a crystal ball to predict the *exact* copy that will resonate with your client’s audience. But, you do have a different tool that can help: A/B testing.

A/B copy tests—comparing one element of copy to the same element with different copy—helps you learn what makes your client’s audience tick. (For example, you may have two ideas for a subject line—how do you know which one is better?! Test!)

Now, as a copywriter, you don’t need to run these tests. But you can certainly recommend tests to your clients—and provide the copy for them. It’s another way to show you’re a strategic partner (and another way to potentially land some more work with your existing clients!).

Listen in to hear five email tests you can recommend to your clients. Nicki and Kate break down what these tests are, how you can pitch them to your clients (very low key!), and what you need to deliver copy-wise to thrill your clients.

Landing copywriting clients is a lot easier than you may think.

But one of the most overlooked ways to find clients?

Talking to people.

On this episode of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, Nicki and Kate joke about finding clients at the grocery store. But, truthfully, you can find clients almost anywhere!

Because you really don’t know who could use a copywriter! And, because we’re writers and like writing, we take for granted that there are SO many people who don’t like writing.

21 Jul 202136. From Full-Time, Faith-Based Nonprofit Work to Part-Time Copywriting: Kate's Story00:47:10

When Kate Kosydar first discovered copywriting, she had been working full time in the faith-based nonprofit world for more than a decade and was ready for a change. She talks about why she continued to pursue copywriting, even after taking another copywriting course she didn't find valuable, and how she realized her original definition of copywriting (being "salesy" or selling out her values) was not at all what it actually ended up being for her copywriting career.

You can make a difference as a copywriter working with businesses you believe in and honoring your values. Spoiler: she has nearly doubled her former full-time salary—working part time, and she and her husband have managed to pay off their student loans. Kate also touches on living in a more rural area and the benefits of being able to work remote with her clients.

Note: We mention "Pitchapalooza" on this episode, which is an annual four-week event for Comprehensive Copywriting Academy students that gets everyone writing and sending their first pitches.
