Complete this sentence with your own answer: “I’m ready…” 

For example, some of my recent clients’ answers have been: 

• “I’m ready to be the woman who saves money every month.” 
• “I’m ready to be the woman who opens the investment account.”
• “I am ready to be the woman who earns X euro every month.”
• “I am ready to acknowledge all the aspects and people who have helped me in the past.”
• “I am ready to acknowledge that I went to public school.” 
• “I am ready to ask for help.”
• “I am ready to be asked for help.” 
• “I am ready to release my employment.”
• “I am ready to start my own company.” 
• “I am ready to be a full-time entrepreneur.” 

Then you can slowly – or quickly – identify the exact step you need to take to make your statement true.

Has anyone told you that you are a cast iron pan? Cause you are

What is Nicole talking about! How can you, a human being, be compared to a cast iron pan?

Well, there is the foundation, how a cast iron pan is made, what it does with your meat, and the fact that every cast iron pan is unique... and results depends upon how you care for it and YOU.

In 3 metaphors Nicole explains why she is a cast iron pan.

Number 1: If you don’t use your cast iron pan, it rusts. You have got to use it and you have got to know what you want to use it for. Meaning you can be exactly who you want to be. Nicole wants to be a coach to successful women in tech. Who do you want to be?

Number 2: A cast iron pan is “a hunk of work that isn’t worth it” to some and "the best thing ever" to others. Having a cast iron pan is a investment. When are you going to invest in yourself?

Number 3: When your cast iron pan (or you) is not performing as usual, what do you do? You try out new things, see what works and what doesn’t.  How are you improving and learning?

Nicole had this idea, a podcast to share timeless stories, including her own, to be of greater service to others. But where to start and how to go about starting a podcast? She sought help in the form of a podcast manager named Laila and now almost 30 episodes into this adventure together and the end of season 1 in sight it was high time to bring Laila from behind the curtain and in front of the stage to hear her brave story.

It turned out to be an emotional (with tears and lots of laughter) retelling of Laila’s journey as an introverted administrative assistant pretending to be an extrovert to be able to survive in the corporate world which ultimately lead to a burnout and a lot of learning about herself. Extensive therapy and reading books about introverts gave Laila the direction and the drive to change her career at the age of 50.

Happier than she has ever been she has immersed herself in podcast management, the tech of editing, the supporting of clients and having a blast while doing this.

One of the questions Nicole always asks her guests is who their Brave role model is and this time it is not at all a person you expect to be a brave role model.

Welcome to the 100th episode! 

There was a time when publishing 100 episodes seemed like a massive goal. Yet, here we are: celebrating…and also getting ready for a success slump. 

What is a success slump? 

That emotional release and dip after you’ve accomplished a goal. It shows up as:

• Questions like “is this really it?” and “what now?”
• Distancing yourself from the results you created “it wasn’t that hard”
• Feeling exhausted and sleeping more 
• Feeling confused, exposed, or anxious 

I share a series of goals my clients achieved in Q4 2022 and how they all experienced a success slump.

A success slump is a normal part of being a human, so let’s normalize it and prepare for it. In this episode, I teach you how to move with ease through one and how to still enjoy your new results.

Sometimes everything may appear to be picture-perfect on the outside, while our internal journey is quite the opposite, full of stress, and anxiety that drives negative thoughts and feelings. That was true for my client Nisha Shrestha.

“I had very much been raised with the mindset that the single career was the way that you define success. You pick a job, you stay in that field… [but] I found a bunch of different stuff that I enjoyed. And at one point, in December maybe, you said to me, “Rebecca, you know, you're self-employed now.” And I was like, “Oh, yeah, I guess I am.” - Rebecca Walter

So you want to hire more women, but don’t know why they aren’t applying? I’ve got a bit of a fiery and direct answer for you. 

This question – while common – is wrong. It outsources the responsibility to the people who are not currently in power. The accountability and the responsibility for more women applying and hiring more women belong to YOU. 

The better question to ask yourself is: What do I need to do to call in more women?

Listener Question: How do I stay motivated when it's been months since I was laid off and I've not gotten a single offer? How do I remember that I'm really good at my job when it's been months and I haven't even gotten a single offer?

I know it's tough to stay motivated and confident in your skills when facing rejection or a lack of offers. To help you stay strong, I share a simple yet brave technique: define who you are and what makes you great at your job. Write it down and say it to yourself in the mirror every day. 

I also suggest engaging in creative freelance/contract/fractional work, attending networking events, sharing vulnerably with others, and uplifting fellow women in tech. Together, we can support and encourage each other during this challenging time.

Your call to action: Take a few minutes today to write down your strengths and unique value. Say them out loud to yourself.

Learn how to work less with the Accountability Triangle by getting clear, focusing on the outcome, setting boundaries, and stop doing other people's jobs    In this episode, I show you what accountability really is and how you can transform it to a super power for stressing and working less. 

You have most likely been taught a form of accountability that focuses on control and drives you towards burnout, especially if you have been socialized as a woman and now work as a woman in leadership, woman in tech, woman in stem, or more.

For example:

• “Hold them accountable”
• “Make sure Bob is putting his numbers into the report correctly”
• “Your job is to get them to act”

Sure these statements may sound innocent and simple – maybe even normal – but they really, really aren’t.

In fact, these statements, and the mindset behind them, are destined to wear you out, slow down your career growth, limit your goal achievement, and cap your income.

This form of accountability is actually not-so-hidden control:

• controlling others
• controlling shared situations
• even controlling the uncontrollable

Which is as far away from the true definition of accountability as you can get, almost the exact opposite. Webster’s Dictionary defines accountability as “an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions” (emphasis mine).

True accountability is a habit that empowers you and is based on clarity, boundaries, communication, and excellence for YOU. Real accountability is a force that reduces that amount of stress you carry and the amount of extra effort you take on. Real accountability reduces conflicts, matures timelines and scopes, and focuses you on what you can actually control: YOU, your mindset, your actions, and your future.

But if the definition is clear and the benefits are many, why (oh why?!) is accountability so misunderstood and misused?

In other words, why are you so exhausted, overscheduled, and struggling?

Well, the short answer is that if you take on too much governance, control, and delivery, calling it “accountability” other people get to do less themselves.

In other words, you do their job. Or maybe their jobs.

You do their tasks, their thinking and planning, and, most exhaustingly, their emotional labor.

It is exhausting. You are exhausted because it is exhausting.

So, how do you change it up, stop doing their job, and create space and time for yourself? I offer you the Accountability Triangle 

The Accountability Triangle is a framework I use with my clients. They consistently report that the Accountability Triangle helps them make clear choices that reduce their work effort by between one and three hours each week.

The Accountability Triangle is rooted in my numerous certifications as well as established research, including:

• Erickson Solution Focused Coaching
• Prosci Change Management Practitioner, specifically stakeholder management
• Project Management Institute, specifically RACI
• Karpman Drama Triangle
• The Power of Ted*Empowerment Triangle

The Triangle has three elements:

1. a shared outcome or goal
2. you and your accountabilities and responsibilities
3. a second person’s accountabilities and responsibilities.

Particularly in your career, it is very important that you identify that what people say and do is about them, not about you.   Are you turning data about other people – who they are, what they do, how they think – into information about you?    For example, let's say you share an idea and your boss grabs it and makes it their own, potentially slowing down your career success.    Do you make their behavior mean something about you? For example, that you shouldn't share ideas or that you don't deserve to be more visible?    If you do, I say this with all my love, please start building the bravery to stop. Because you didn't learn anything about yourself, your career growth, your potential, or your quality of work. You did learn about your boss. Your boss (in this example) is a person who grabs ideas and slaps their name on it.    That's it.    Now you get to decide what to do with that new information. Instead of spinning, turn the new data into new information with the evaluation framework, the crucial conversation framework, and into your decision framework.    Particularly if you are in leadership, tech, or STEM generally, this episode is for you.    This week's Celebrate Brave podcast episode is a fiery one. It doesn't. Even though most people believe that changing who you are *must* take a lot of time, the truth is that it doesn't have to. You can transform in one micro-second.

Today I share how a massacre in an elementary school exactly 10 years ago led to an instantaneous transformation in my own self-concept.

But you don't need a tragedy. You can allow a moment of clarity, a moment of experience, a moment of embrace, or a moment of release. You can transform a piece of who you are and you can change the entirety of who you are. It can be chosen or it can be spontaneous.

And it can all happen in one instant.

In this episode, I challenge a common wisdom about the universe and share my own belief instead. My perspective may help you shift how you look at events out of your control in a way that helps you build your brave, grow your career, and hit your life goals. 

You may be like me and have heard “the universe is challenging me” to explain experiences in life. I don’t think this is helpful. In fact, I see that belief lead to exhaustion, overworking, over-producing, and over-serving in myself and others. 

Instead, I accept to shift your mindset to “the universe is confirming me” to release pressure, and constraint, and stress less while you earn more.

My client, Caroline Santinelli, shares her story of moving from burnout-driven medical leave into embracing her innate strengths, choosing her health, and creating her own business. She sums up her experience with a Brene Brown quote: “belong to yourself first.” 

First, she lost her voice (for real) due to stress, experienced her first panic attack, developed insomnia, kept getting sick with aches and fevers, and finally began having significant nerve pains. Finally, she realized she would rather be sick than return to work for her mental health. 

So she gave herself permission to take medical leave. She slowly gave herself permission to begin to belong to herself. Then she began to embrace her innate talents. Then she allowed others to be disappointed. 

She did the messy, deeply personal work of building her brave.

1. In our culture we see grit as a virtue and quit as a vice. Per Annie Duke: “Success does not lie in sticking to things. It lies in picking the right thing to stick to and quitting the rest.”
2. Any decision is made under some degree of uncertainty – we don’t have crystal balls and new information will always reveal itself.
3. External validation increases the escalation of commitment. Fear of how others will view us if we quit is usually overblown.

My key takeaway is how important building the bravery to establish and then craft the habit of quitting -- places, relationships, habits, and jobs -- as a woman in tech is to ensuring that you never, ever quit yourself. Ever.

Caroline Santinelli, a former teacher and now woman in tech, shares her brave career story of – as Brene Brown says – choosing to ‘belong to herself first.’ 

Caroline’s story includes moving from burnout-driven medical leave as a teacher, to embracing her innate strengths, choosing her health, and allowing her brave career to move through different phases.  

At the start of her career transformation, Caroline lost her voice (for real) due to stress, experienced her first panic attack, developed insomnia, kept getting sick with aches and fevers, and finally began having significant nerve pains. 

Caroline shares how she chose messy, deeply personal work of building her brave, searching out support from professionals. Her first significant step was giving herself permission to take medical leave. Then, over many weeks, she slowly gave herself permission to belong to herself and choose her innate talents. The next big step was allowing others to be disappointed.
