Build the Change Planet People Podcast

Episode 1: Let's build a playstreet

Hosts: Natalie Rodden (Teacher and Maker), Priya Chauhan (Journalist)

Special guest: Dominique Palmer

Episode Summary:

Welcome to the first episode of the Build the Change Planet People Podcast, brought to you by the LEGO Group’s Build the Change team and The Day. Join hosts Natalie and Priya as they embark on a creative journey to inspire listeners to reimagine their streets as wild play spaces perfect for children and nature. This episode is designed as a build-along, so grab your LEGO® bricks, art supplies, or building materials and let’s get ready to play and learn!

Who’s it for?

Primary and Middle Schools, home educators, children’s clubs and families.

This podcast is perfect for children aged 7-11, in any setting. It can be used in the classroom and in the home. It's a fantastic tool to encourage learning through play, ideal for wet playtime, LEGO Clubs, and both breakfast and after-school clubs. Families can also enjoy the podcast at home, making playtime both educational and fun.

We recommend setting out pens and paper, LEGO bricks or other creative or recycled materials before playing the podcast, allowing kids to build and create however they like, while they listen.

This podcast offers children a fun and engaging way to find out about environmental careers, develop creative thinking skills and learn how they can help the planet. They can literally learn while they play.

Special Guest:

In every episode, our hosts are going to be speaking to amazing people who are making it their job to help the planet. These are PLANET PEOPLE!

This week our Planet Person is the lovely world-renowned Dominique Palmer, an environmentalist and writer who uses words, fashion and music to influence world leaders to take better care of our planet.

Interactive Elements:

  • Build-Along Activity: Reimagine your street as a wild play street. Use any materials at hand to draw or build a map and then transform it into a nature-friendly space.
  • Visualisation Exercise: Picture your street without cars, think about the sounds, smells, and sights of a nature-rich environment.
  • Iteration Challenge: Improve your initial design by incorporating feedback and making it more wildlife-friendly.
  • Enter the competition: Once you have created your wild play street, you can find out more about how to enter the competition and win amazing prizes for your school! Visit: www.theday.co.uk/build-the-change-planet-play/
  • Upload your photo to the online gallery: You can also upload a photo and one sentence description to our Build the Change gallery (but please note this won’t be counted as a competition entry)

Stay tuned for more inspiring stories and creative challenges in upcoming episodes.
