09 Apr 2021#48 South African Travel | The Era Of The Airbus 321LR 00:45:57

An alarming article from the Business Insider sparked the question, are South African's amongst the most restricted travellers in the world? With little happening in terms of a vaccination rollout and without a credible national carrier where does this leave the South African tourism market?

There is still much to be proud of in the aviation sector, Airlink continue to set the standard in the regional market, FlySafair, Comair and Mango show slight number improvements and Cemair start making all the right moves.

The era of the narrow-body jet is among us, the A321LR stretches its legs to Heathrow and Jet Blue unveil a radical new design for both economy and business class travellers. Is this the beginning of the end for hub and spoke travel? Ethiopian land at the wrong airport, I loose my cool with a snotty remark from a ex-colleague wearing orange blinkers and the SA Express saga is about to end.

22 Dec 2023#157 Christmas Special With Caroline Koll00:50:28

MORE ABOUT CAROLINE ✈️

Caroline is an aviator, an author, a friend and the most competent, hard-working person I have ever met. We met through the podcast and have worked closely together on various projects over the past year.

To steal a quote from General Craven “ If you want to change the world find someone to help you paddle”. Caroline brought immense value to our team and took the lead on multiple high level projects. She is forever in my debt and I am immensely grateful for having the opportunity to work with her.

Caroline’s story is an inspiring one. I hope you enjoy it.

12 Jan 2024#160 No Quick Fix For The Boeing 737 Max - BAP Briefing00:12:15

AVIATION NEWS

  • US Transportation Chief Dashes Hopes of Quick Boeing Max 9 Jet Return

US Transportation Secretary  announced that Boeing's Max 9 airplanes will remain grounded until they are deemed safe to fly by regulators, dashing hopes for a quick return to service. The secretary emphasized that safety is the top priority and that no one should be rushed in the process. Boeing is under scrutiny after a door plug ejected from a 737 Max 9 in mid-flight, resulting in a hole in the plane. Inspections and fixes are being conducted to ensure the safety of every plane delivered to airlines.

  • Undamaged plug exit on Alaska Max 9 had fasteners tightened during assembly

During the assembly of an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9, Boeing personnel tightened six loose fasteners on the fuselage structure around the plug exit opposite the one that later failed. The work was done at Boeing's factory in Renton, Washington, after the fuselage was shipped from supplier Spirit AeroSystems' factory in Kansas. While it is unclear why the fasteners were loose, this indicates that Boeing paid attention to discrepant components during assembly. The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into Boeing to determine if the completed products conformed to approved design and were safe for operation.

  • Cathay to probe year-end cancellations, as it admits it ‘underestimated’ pilot shortage issue

Cathay Pacific has admitted that it underestimated the number of reserve pilots needed during the year-end period, which resulted in numerous flight cancellations. The airline's chief operations and service delivery officer, Alex McGowan, is leading a task force to identify and resolve the underlying issues that caused these operational problems. The cancellations in January were necessary due to a lack of adequate reserve levels, and further flights had to be canceled in order to stabilize the current operation. Cathay Pacific has faced scrutiny from the Hong Kong government and its pilot union, which blames the airline's job cuts in 2020 for the current pilot shortage. McGowan has vowed to improve the situation and ensure high-quality services and reliability for customers.

  • SAA’s historical mess of financial losses, broken airline operations finally revealed

South African Airways (SAA) has suffered financial losses of R28.9 billion since 2018, despite receiving R38.1 billion in bailouts from the government during that same period. The airline has been dependent on taxpayer-funded bailouts since 2011 and its financial results for the past four years, which were only recently tabled in Parliament, reveal a dysfunctional airline that was not financially stable, with its biggest expenses being leasing aircraft, the maintenance of aircraft, fuel, and employee remuneration. SAA was placed in business rescue in December 2021 and the recently tabled results show that it is still dependent on government support to cover expenses that exceed its revenue.

  • Ural Airlines pays rent to farmer after its Airbus A320 lands in wheat field

Ural Airlines has agreed to pay a farmer around $11,000 as compensation for having to rent his land for the commercial jet to stay there since September. The Airbus A320 had suffered a loss of hydraulic system and decided to switch to Novosibirsk Airport, but it ran out of fuel before reaching the airport and made an emergency landing on the farmer's wheat field. The aircraft is preventing the planting of wheat, resulting in losses for the farmer. Ural Airlines has not yet decided how to remove the A320 from the wheat field.

29 Jan 2021#38 Smaller Narrower Greener // Small Planes For Long Haul00:42:38

It was great to be back in the studio for the first news based episode of 2021. We were hoping for more positive news stories to report unfortunately with the developing story coming out of Hong Kong regarding crew requirements and medical observations and the dire state of the European market this was not the case.

Our headline story of the week is the narrow body market and their proposed use on long haul sectors. Prepare to see plenty more A321’s flying around the globe in the near future. If you have any views about this sector please get involved in the conversation, we want to hear your views.

The South African market has been set back by the Lockdown retractions and the curfew has created havoc with regards to passenger and crew scheduling. A huge congratulations to Airlink as they become the second largest airline in Africa, a remarkable achievement.

We also touch on Emirates, Qatar, Lufthansa, aircraft deliveries and IATA’s approach or lack there of to our crippled industry.

18 Jun 2021#60 SAA Deal | Good Or Bad?00:50:59

There are a multitude of articles that explain who the SAA equity partner is, the involvement of the PIC and the role of certain individuals - todays discussion was a far more candid discussion similar to what you would get when you throw a few pilots together with a couple of beers. Fixing the airlines of the world one round at a time.

We ask 2 questions on this episode which as far as I am concerned are the only 2 questions that count.

1. Is the new SAA deal good for South African aviation?

2. Is the new SAA deal good for South Africans?

26 Aug 2022#110 Honouring The Aviators | In Conversation With Ron Kaplan01:10:38

In this episode, we celebrate Ron Kaplan. Ron has dedicated his life to preserving the legacy of the legendary aviators that make our industry the best in the world.

✈️Ron currently serves as Founder and Executive Director of the Ohio Air & Space Hall of Fame and Museum in Columbus, Ohio.  In 2017, he left the National Aviation Hall of Fame after a 19-year contractor and staff tenure that included four as Executive Director. In 2018, he secured a state grant of $550,000 toward establishing the non-profit Ohio Air & Space Hall of Fame and to renovate the 1929 Port Columbus Air Terminal into its home. A capital campaign to raise additional funds required to commence work on the 93-year-old Art Deco-style air terminal is currently underway.

Ron grew up with an avid interest in aviation history thanks to his father, a former B-25 pilot-instructor and private pilot.  He attended Ohio University for two years, studying graphic design and communications.  While at Ohio University, he created SURF OHIO, originally a t-shirt line that is now a trademarked and licensed lifestyle brand.

In 1982 he founded Kaplan Graphics, an imprinted sportswear company that he sold in 1994 to turn his then hobby as an aviation artist, journalist and photographer into a full-time career.  Ron went on to earn international acclaim for his illustrations of aircraft, insignia and hand-painted reproductions of vintage WWII nose-art on leather flight jackets, scrap aluminium and actual aircraft.

Among his art clients were Air & Space Magazine, the Smithsonian Air & Space Society, NIKE, Chuck Yeager, Inc., the Miss America P-51 Air Racing Team, the Memphis Belle Memorial Association, and many other individuals, including WWII veteran aviators and warbird operators.  Ron was an artist member of the American Society of Aviation Artists, the U.S. Air Force Art Program, and a charter member of the International Society of Aviation Photographers.  He has been a contributing editor to FLIGHT JOURNAL and columnist for WARBIRD DIGEST magazines.

He is also a co-founder and co-director of the annual National Aviation Heritage Invitational, created in 1999 in partnership with the Reno Air Racing Association and the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum.

In 2012 he launched Reel Stuff Aviation Resources LLC, a consultancy dedicated to the development, creation and public appreciation of aviation cinema and broadcast projects.  Reel Stuff also provides marketing, production, branding and public relations services, with a client list that includes the Air Force Museum Foundation, Aviation Community Foundation, Bremont Watch Company, Army Aviation Association of America, Tockr Watch Company and the Columbus Center of Science of Industry, among others.

Audience feedback drives the show. We'd love for you to contact us and keep the conversation going!

BRYAN AIR ADVISORY 🤖

The five why’s - The “5 Why's” refer to the practice of asking, five times, why the situation has occurred in order to get to the root cause(s) of the problem. It illustrates the importance of digging down beneath the most obvious cause of the problem.

I asked Ryan why we do the podcast - the answers we both got are personal and slightly different but interestingly enough when we asked the same question about why we are doing this job as opposed to our old job of being an airline pilot we got to the same answer to the question of why do we do the podcast.

I heard this on Chris Williamson’s Modern Wisdom podcast this past week

Problem: One of the monuments in Washington D.C. is deteriorating.

Why #1 – Why is the monument deteriorating?

    • Because harsh chemicals are frequently used to clean the monument.

Why #2 – Why are harsh chemicals needed?

    • To clean off the large number of bird droppings on the monument.

Why #3 – Why are there a large number of bird droppings on the monument?

    • Because the large population of spiders in and around the monument are a food source to the local birds

Why #4 – Why is there a large population of spiders in and around the monument?

    • Because vast swarms of insects, on which the spiders feed, are drawn to the monument at dusk.

Why #5 – Why are swarms of insects drawn to the monument at dusk?

    • Because the lighting of the monument in the evening attracts the local insects.

Solution:  Change how the monument is illuminated in the evening to prevent attraction of swarming insects.

30 Dec 2019Mark Dutton00:50:29

In this episode I chat to Mark Dutton, one of the most competent pilots I have even flown with. A legend in the flight deck and one of the coolest characters under pressure I have ever met. A wonderful friend and someone I have learnt a great deal from over the past 10 years both inside and outside the cockpit. It was a great privilege to have him on my show.

02 Apr 2021#47 Unruly Passengers | SAA Pilot Association Strike00:37:41

Unruly passengers are becoming a serious threat to aviation safety with reports around the globe increasing rapidly since the start of the pandemic. There is no place for this in aviation, IATA have made big strides in enforcing this law. I hope these cases are dealt with swiftly and harshly.

SAA Pilots association strike as the flight instructors are called back to the office to work and are the African operators beginning to struggle?

14 Apr 2025#224 How Pilots Handle Pressure: Boosting Your Team’s Productivity with Mauritz Coetzer00:49:50

Special Guest: Mauritz Coetzer – Airline Captain and Founder of V1 Consulting

Mauritz joins Bryan and Ryan in the studio for an inspiring conversation about reinventing oneself after unforeseen career setbacks. Having built a successful 17-year airline career at SA Express, Mauritz’s professional life comes to an abrupt halt in February 2020 when COVID-19 triggers the airline’s bankruptcy. With no compensation, no income, and armed only with his pilot’s license, Mauritz harnesses the aviation principles that guided his flying career to reinvent himself as an entrepreneur and performance coach.

In this uplifting episode, Mauritz shares his journey from being retrenched to launching V1 Consulting, where he applies aviation-based principles to enhance team leadership and performance in business. Mauritz discusses how critical decision-making skills, clear communication, and operational discipline from the flight deck translate seamlessly into business coaching and management environments.

After 33 months away from flying, Mauritz successfully returns to the skies as a Line Captain with Proflight Zambia in Lusaka, reigniting his passion for aviation while continuing to grow his consultancy.

Key Takeaways:

• Applying aviation principles to overcome personal and professional challenges.

• Strategies for adapting to sudden career disruptions and creating new opportunities.

• Practical ways aviation-based teamwork and communication can transform businesses.

• Mauritz’s personal insights on leadership, resilience, and maintaining motivation.

BRYAN AIR ADVISORY 🤖

  • Atomic Habits - Atomic Habits" by James Clear is a self-help book that provides practical strategies to create and maintain good habits while breaking bad ones. The author emphasizes the power of small, incremental changes, or "atomic habits," to achieve remarkable results over time. Clear introduces the Four Laws of Behavior Change—Make it Obvious, Make it Attractive, Make it Easy, and Make it Satisfying—as a framework to facilitate habit formation and improvement.
  • "habit stacking" technique. This involves linking a new habit to an existing one by identifying a regular activity you already do and then attaching the new habit to it. For example, if you want to start listing weights, you could stack it with your existing habit of working at your home computer. By pairing the new habit with a well-established routine, you increase the likelihood of remembering and consistently performing the new habit.
