He has extensive clinical experience in the hospital setting, one on one patient contact in community pharmacy, and health care regulatory experience with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Since that time he has traveled the world studying with herbalists, shamans, and spiritual gurus learning the magical art of healing the mind, body, and soul. • Myths and solutions for vitamin deficiencies such as B12, vitamin D, protein & iron.

31 Dec 201417. 4 Mindset Shifts to Go Vegan in the New Year00:06:49

Happy New Year!

In this podcast, I talk about the 4 mindset shifts that must happen in order for you to start a vegan journey in the new year.

Get all of the resources mentioned in this episode here

http://www.brownvegan.com/podcast/17-4-mindset-shifts-to-go-vegan-in-the-new-year

  • Write down why you want to go vegan - Is it for ethical, health or environmental reasons? Maybe it's a little bit of everything. Take a few minutes and write down your reasons and visualize how your life will look after the transformation. Having this purpose on paper will give you something to refer back to when you get discouraged.  Write it down, make it happen!
  • Make the decision - If you don't decide to go vegan, you will always make excuses about why you can't do it. When you make the decision to take this step, you're more likely to research and take action. There's so much power in that declaration!
  • This journey is NOT perfect - Please don't beat yourself up! You will fall. You will feel overwhelmed. Some days cooking will be the last thing you want to do! Hold on! You got this! Always remember progression over perfection!
  • You need a meal plan - There's really no way around this one. You must plan your meals in order to stay on track. Use Pinterest, Findingvegan, Google and library books for ideas. You can also check out my recipe page for suggestions. Also, check out this previous article with 5 Meal Planning Tips for New Families

08 Oct 201411. How Chemese Lost 100 Lbs on a Raw Vegan Diet00:32:14

So many people start a vegan journey to lose weight and fall off when the results don't happen fast enough. This wasn't the case at all for Chemese!

After trying every diet you can think of and desperately wanting to change her 300 lb frame, she decided to eat a raw vegan diet of tons of fresh fruit & vegetables (minimum cooked food).

In the latest podcast episode, I talk to Chemese about her journey and why she started a 100-day detox to ring in the new year with clarity, exercise and nothing but fresh juice & smoothies.

Not bad for someone who didn't grow up eating vegetables!  :-)

13 Jul 2022I don't know what the hell I'm doing (Solo Episode)00:16:57

Chile

This week’s solo episode is completely unedited, raw, and honestly vulnerable so if you tune in, thank you for being here and listening!

Y’all know that I don’t ever want to be overly negative, and if I am feeling down, I always want to present it as a lesson learned or end it with a solution. This week, I wanted to just hit record and document how I’m feeling in life and business at this very moment. I’ll be upfront, I don’t bring a solid solution to this podcast, but it did feel good to process my thoughts out loud and in sharing, I hope maybe one of you in this community will feel seen and understood as well.

I’ve talked before about my past struggle with anxiety and depression and how they were once so crippling that it was impossible for me to show up consistently in my work. In fact, this year is one of the first times I’ve been really consistent in creating new content, showing up every week, and staying on track in my business. I even did my first live workshop last month which felt valuable and rewarding as hell! I hired a team (a podcast and YouTube editor and an assistant) for the first time and have been marking off goals left and right. I’m doing things now that I wrote about wanting to do back in 2017.

That being said, I’m experiencing a complete WTF moment where I feel like I have NO idea what the hell I’m doing. Being an online entrepreneur and influencer comes with its perks (I talk about this in this episode) but it also comes with some serious pits full of self doubt and confusion.

In this episode, I’m getting vulnerable with how I’m feeling in this current moment and talking about:

  • How fluctuations in income make working online feel uncertain
  • My frustration with my current financial situation
  • My previous struggles with mental health and how I’m struggling right now
  • Feeling a lack of purpose and confusion about what I’m ‘supposed’ to be doing
  • Being consistent in my business and still experiencing the lows
  • How even the people who seem to have it all together really don’t

As always, thank you for tuning in and sharing these moments with me. I know better times are ahead but I feel like it’s important to not just share a highlight reel of business and to be transparent with what I’m going through.

I’m so excited to share today’s conversation with David Quarles, who has been bringing so much vibrant energy and joy to my Instagram feed for years.

David Quarles is a Memphis-based Interior Designer, Jewelry Designer, Content Creator and Fitness Instructor - the true definition of a multi-hyphenate creative! His philosophy on life stems from doing and creating all things from a place of love. David comes from African-American, Afro-Caribbean, European and Indigenous-American descent; a vibrant cultural background that influences his work and movement in this world. With a professional background in jewelry design, interior design, visual merchandising, and wellness coaching, David views creativity as more than an activity, he views it as his way of life.

In the podcast episode, you’ll hear me say that David is full of surprises. As a follower of his content, he is constantly seeming to reinvent not just the spaces around him, but reinventing himself as well. From his vegan cooking, to interior design, to mocktail creations, to his new jewelry line, and then learning he used to complete men's fitness competitions–there is truly so much inspiration to find from David’s life and experiences.

We are of course diving in to all of the topics today including what led David to initially go vegan and how he finally learned to make tofu delicious, but we also talk a lot about his creativity, the seemingly endless sources of joy in his life, his experience when he first stepped into the interior design world, and how he has navigated life as a radically vibrant and creative person.

When I first started my business and creating vegan content online, I spread myself SO thin trying to use all the platforms and do all the things at once. I didn’t have a strategic plan when it came to my content and guess what? After years of doing this, it drained my energy, wasn’t boosting my bank account, and led to burnout.

I felt like I was putting so much into my business without having my finances reflect it.

That’s why on today’s solo podcast episode, I’m sharing with y’all the four things I would focus on if I were starting all over from day 1 in growing my business!

Today on the podcast, I have Jay McPherson: a vegan content creator and YouTuber who calls himself “your favorite friendly fashionable vegan.” We’re here for a high energy conversation about finding inspiration to go vegan, the need for more vegan breakfast spots, and how to be confidently vegan anywhere you go.

I love this conversation with Jay because it hits on SO many important points of getting comfortable living a vegan lifestyle. If you love hearing the guest stories of what inspired them to go vegan, you’re gonna love Jay’s answer: “If Beyonce can go vegan, I can too!” And while it starts off with a laugh, we talk about how at the end of the day, when it comes to making healthy life changes, ‘inspiration is inspiration’ and everyone needs to find their own source.

So many people I talk to say that fear of missing out on social events, family gatherings, and food as culture is what holds them back from a vegan lifestyle, and Jay is such a great representative of what being a confident, fulfilled, social vegan can look like. He gives some amazing tips on how to eat out when there’s no vegan option, how to prepare for family holidays and parties with friends, and how having the right outlook on social gatherings is crucial to remaining happy as a vegan.

In this episode, I share practical tips on how to start meal planning as a a new vegan.

  • Think about what you’re already eating and make a vegan version of those meals Example: Smoothie - instead of using dairy, switch it out with plant-based milk
  • Don’t feel like you have to plan 7 days of meals right away. Start small with 2 or 3 meals.
  • Theme your meals: Taco Tuesday, Pasta on Thursdays, Leftovers on Mondays, Eat Out on the weekends
  • Plan for leftovers, so you don’t spend a lot of thinking about what’s for dinner.
  • Always have easy snacks like fresh fruit, carrots & hummus, nuts available.
  • Plan ahead for busy times. Look for vegan options near you and always add convenient options to your meal plan like veggie burgers, potatoes and frozen vegetables in your freezer.
  • Consider a meal delivery service kit like Purple Carrot or Green Chef. They do the planning and grocery shopping for you.
  • Be open to experiment - Add a new ingredient, produce, etc. to your grocery list. Be okay with failing in the kitchen.
  • If you’re not much of a cook right now, the only way to get better is by DOING.

Les is the founder and host of Balanced Black Girl, an online wellness community and podcast focused on health, wellness, and self-care from the perspectives of Black women. She started her first blog The Balanced Berry in 2014 to share her love of fitness and nutrition with others. After years of feeling dissatisfied with the lack of diversity in wellness content shared on large platforms, she pivoted to create Balanced Black Girl in 2018. Balanced Black Girl provides content and experiences empowering millennial Black women to live their healthiest lives.

While this conversation is mostly focused on the business side of Balanced Black Girl, we of course also cover some great wellness topics and strategies that might inspire YOU to create more sacred spaces in your own life. And what I really love about this conversation is that even if you aren’t a content creator, podcast host, or online personality, the lessons that Les speaks on are universal. As Les shares in this conversation, “Wellness is a constant dance.”

Blog post for this episode

Destiny and Brianna bought their tiny house on wheels in January 2022 and officially moved into it in April 2022. They are currently living in Portland, Oregon and plan to move their home again within the next 3 years.

As a young, Black, queer couple, finding an affordable and safe space to live was a top priority and going tiny was an important investment for them. They enjoy traveling and going tiny allows them to explore different cities while not having to worry about finding a place to live.

Lez Go Tiny was created to share their experience within the tiny movement and they plan on making resources for other BIPOC looking to go tiny.

In this episode we are talking about:

  • Choosing a tiny home over van life

26 Jul 2022How Phil Dancy Accumulated A Six-Figure Net Worth Before 3000:39:35

A new episode in the MONEY SERIES is live!

Full blog post for this episode... https://www.brownvegan.com/podcast/phil-dancy

With the Money Series, I’ll be bringing in guest experts to focus on all things finances because, as you’ve heard me say, you can’t have wellness without financial wellness.

Today I’m joined by Phillip Dancy of Dancy with Money to talk about SO many valuable financial topics to help you get on track with not just saving your money but growing your money and wealth too.

Philip’s main goal is to help young professionals (but ultimately everyone) establish a strong financial foundation through one-on-one coaching and providing articles on various financial topics all while helping them turn steps into strides.

Phillip’s financial mindset really began in college after moving off campus and having to pay for rent and school tuition. He quickly realized that by wisely budgeting and paying himself first, he could pay for his needs without having to struggle through school and work at the same time. He ended up saving enough money from his 3 month internship to pay off an entire year of school due to his saving strategies.

23 May 2023Therapy, PCOS & Plant-Based Living with Britany King00:52:59

In this episode of the Brown Vegan podcast, I interview Britany King about her journey towards becoming plant-based and how it relates to her work as a licensed therapist.

After being diagnosed with PCOS in 2015 (and not satisfied with the treatment plan her doctor provided), she explored alternative methods, including a plant-based diet.

We chat about how PCOS affects women of color disproportionately. Britany also highlights many Black women may not even realize they have PCOS due to a lack of education and awareness about the symptoms. Women are often taught that irregular periods are normal and may not realize that other symptoms such as hair loss, excess hair growth, and changes in blood sugar levels could be linked to PCOS.
