The year is rapidly closing but here's one more episode before 2019 hits. This one is a look at some of the shows played on 12/27 over the years. We've got Grateful Dead tunes from several eras of the band and some nice jams along with. So ice the bubbly, spike the last of the egg nog and get ready to boogie.

I will note, there's one song in the mix that I failed to back-announce. It was sort of a last-minute addition– a bonus track, if you will. Don't let that mix up get you down. I hope you enjoy all of this stuff and look froward to more great stuff to come in the new year.

I've been catching up on so much listening these days that I thought I'd share with you a few choice releases that I've been enjoying from The Jauntee, Dave Heumann, and The Modern Folk Trio Band. Afterwards I pay tribute to the late Robbie Robertson. This all adds up to a set of interesting tunes including a closing medley of Phil & Friends, Jerry Garcia Band, & (of course) Grateful Dead.

It was difficult to narrow things down but, as usual, leaving something unmentioned doesn't mean I haven't loved it. Instead, we're focusing on a few artists that I've spoken to on the show who've released some great new music.

The Jauntee's brand new album "Anything" is available on streaming services and directly via their website TheJauntee.com. 

Dave Heumann's latest, "Themes From Blue Honey" is available via his bandcamp page.

We're kicking off 2018 with another visit from my good friend, Andy Barnes. Together we dug into a list of venues that the Grateful Dead only visited one time and we've assembled what I hope you'll find to be an entertaining listen.

Greetings, Dead Freaks! In this episode I chat with the extremely talented guitar player, Tashi Dorji. Dorji is a full-time practitioner of improvisational guitar. We get into his background, from piecing together Western music in his homeland of Bhutan and acquiring his first guitar, to coming to the States, joining a band, and discovering jazz. Dorji has a new album coming out on September 3 on Moone Records. "Midden" is a collaboration with John Dieterich (Deerhoof) and features two side-long improvisations from the two guitarists.

Welcome back, Dead Freaks!

In this episode we return to finish our look at the final shows of Keith and Donna. Winter '79 featured some good music but spotty coverage in the form of soundboard tapes. Fortunately, some of the audience recordings hold up and we even feature one such tape in the show. We've got some first set rockers and second set jammers on the decks.

Before we get down with that, we take a few minutes to celebrate the life and voice of Jerry Garcia Band vocalist, Gloria Jones, who passed last week. Joining Jerry's side band in Fall of 1984, she sang with him and for us until Jerry passed. She then carried on with Melvin and Jackie in JGB. Gloria will be missed and fondly remembered forever.

In this episode I chat with guitarist, Jeremy Kizina, about his return to guitar and his recent release "Our Ghosts Follow". We dig into his background as a touring musician, his wide-ranging influences, and, of course, the Grateful Dead. I sneak in a couple of new music recommendations at the top of the show and there's a terrific mix of Dead in the back half.

The excellent new podcast "The Female Bob Dylan" is a few promising episodes in and I highly recommend it. Writer, researcher & producer Sophie Abramowitz, artist & musician Sarah Bachman, and folklorist, writer & (terrific record label) SPINSTER co-owner Emily Hilliard explore singer-songwriters who have been shouldered with this title. Please do check out there show wherever you find your favorite podcasts.

I mentioned a few of the many recent releases from The Modern Folk in the intro this episode. "Serf Punk", a singer-songwriter-ish album that I love, was first. Click here to check it out. "Primitive Future III" follows and that one, quite different to "Serf Punk", is largely instrumental. Proceeds from that release are being routed into Hurricane Helene relief and you can find it here. And the last one, which is also the newest one, "Crater Family" from The Modern Folk Trio Band can be picked up on vinyl here.

It's midsummer and I've got a new episode to cool you down. Guitarist Jim Nunally chats with me about coming up as a flatpicker in the Bay Area, making the jump to music full time, playing music with David Grisman, the latest album from the Nell Robinson & Jim Nunally band, and so much more. There's also a mix of Grateful Dead tunes to wrap the whole thing up so stick around for the whole thing as you won't want to miss a bit.

It's a delightful fusion of the traditional sounds of bluegrass, folk, country, and swing with an infusion of smart songwriting. Their voices blend beautifully and the band has chops to spare. We've got a special and unusual episode for you this time around. I had the great fortune to join my good friend and head of Osiris, RJ Bee, at a Golden Gate Wingmen show late last month. The show, at The Hamilton Live, was the kick-off for a short tour and it was a blast. To make things even more exciting, we got to meet and interview the band. Jeff Chimenti (keys, vocals), John Kadlecik (guitar, vocals), Jay Lane (drums, vocals), and Reed Mathis (bass, vocals) were friendly, forthcoming, and entertaining.

In addition to the recommendations, I'm taking one last chance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead's 1972 shows with a healthy mix that gets good and weird.

Phil Cook "From The Kitchen" is a terrific 2xLP live album available from Warhen Records. Cook and company create a charming blend of blues, soul, and gospel that touches the heart and lifts the spirit. I had the pleasure of talking to him for episode 21(!) and continue to love his work. Sunburned Hand of the Man is a psychedelic/experimental music collective that has had many members, many forms, and many sounds over the years but they have consistently made great, weird, music for decades. The recent reissue of "Headdress" from Three Lobed Recordings throws back hard to the sound of the band 20 years ago but it could well have been recorded last week. Or next. Grip that here. Or go to the Sunburned Bandcamp page and check out "Archive Dive" which contains the fuller excerpt of the excerpt played on the show as well as a few other live cuts which, you'll find, are not the same as what I presented. That's who these guys are; an ungoverned morass of sound and spirit. Ride along or get off the bus. Spiral Joy Band is a long running group leaning here with their traditional instruments into the outer realms. Making spiritual, meditational, music with traditional instruments is not new but it's a zone they homesteaded upon for some time as their existence and personnel intertwine through the years with Pelt. This latest is called "In The River" and is a bit of an homage to Paul Metzger (get to know him!) whom they had just seen perform when this was put to tape. You can grip the LP via bandcamp

Lastly but by no means least, Mike Gangloff  (Pelt, Black Twig Pickers, Eight Point Star) has released a beautiful solo album; his first for some time; entitled "Evening Measures". Released by VHF Records, "Evening Measures" cleaves closer to traditional than the selections above but still leans into drone capturing a unique work of beauty. This one is out now and has done many a turn on my turntable. Get yours from VHF Records.

BrokedownPod returns with new music, a great guest, and some good old Grateful Dead. Andy Logan, founder of the Grateful Guitars Foundation and steward of Jerry Garcia's Alligator guitar joins me to discuss the mission of the foundation, the magic within these special instruments, a new benefit album, and the upcoming show to support the foundation. 

The new album, which benefits Grateful Guitars, is called "Grateful: The Music Plays The Band" and features Oteil Burbridge, Dave Nelson Band, Dark Star Orchestra, Afro Dead and more. It's out now and can be found in physical and streaming outlets via this link.

We're looking back to 1970, An Evening with The Grateful Dead wherein they bring out acoustic guitars and special guests to make some beautiful music. It's not all mellow vibes, though. Ryan Jewell has a lot to say and some great music coming out. Early in July, he released a record as the Ryan Jewell Quintet entitled "Vibration!". Somewhere between post-bop, free jazz, and the modern era, this collection of Ryan's compositions pushes and pulls at its boundaries, entertaining all the while. Not content to do any one thing, his next release is under the name Mosses and is entitled, "T.V. Sun". This is more an experimental indie group which covers a lot of ground. Ryan plays dulcimer, guitar, synthesizers, and (of course) drums on this release. He tells us all about it and we get listen to a track after the interview. "T.V. Sun" is out on September 20. We're back with a great conversation with guitarist and deep improv musiv head, Joel Berk. Berk releases deep guitar-based zones under the name ragenap. We talk about his work and its origins before diving into a bit of a discussion about Chicago's improv music scene and, of course Grateful Dead. in and around the interview, we sample some ragenap and one of his more recent releases leads of a deep mix of Dead jams and songs.

I strongly recommend the albums, Thankruptcy, No Ear To Hear (a split with Prana Crafter), and the most recent: Thriving Culture. You'll also find a wide array of "covers" tracks inspired by various songs, many of which may be familiar. I haven't found one that I didn't like but I will recommend a couple favorites: "shenandoah", "piper (intro)", and "days between".

We begin the Spring thaw with a visit from my good friend and the founder of both the Helping Friendly Podcast and the Osiris Podcast Network, RJ Bee. RJ wanted to talk about Bobby songs so that's just what we'll do. We also, spend a fair amount of time discussing the work of the late John Perry Barlow. Barlow's writing for the Grateful Dead along with his advocacy for an open internet via the Electronic Frontier Foundation are both keys to the very existence of this podcast. He will be missed and forever held in the utmost esteem.

Hey there, Dead Freaks! It's October and although I'm ready for cooler weather, I'm still into talking about September. Specifically, September 1990. We're looking back to that first run of shows at Madison Square Garden with Vince and Bruce joining the Grateful Dead on the keys. While this era is often maligned, there's great stuff to be heard. As such, I thought I might put together something to accompany the gradual warming, a little mix to go along with the first open-window days of the season. Plus, I did promise you kind and patient listeners a shot of good old Grateful Dead.

This mix reaches back 50, 40, and 30 years to 1968, '78, and '88 for material. The tracks range from jams to cowboy songs and it hangs together despite the disparate eras represented. After the music, I do spend a few minutes detailing where the cuts come from so as to provide a little bit of context. So pull back the curtains, throw up the sash, crank the stereo and get on down.
